COLUMBUS, OH — The New Jersey Devils staged a remarkable comeback, scoring four unanswered goals in the second period to secure a 4-1 victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Friday. This win marks a turnaround for the Devils, who had lost their previous two games and four of their last five.
John Marino, Alexander Holtz, Nico Hischier, and Nathan Bastian each found the back of the net for the Devils (23-17-3), while Vitek Vanecek contributed with 29 saves. Hischier, the New Jersey captain, stressed the importance of persistence and resilience, which played a crucial role in their victory.
The Blue Jackets (14-22-9) opened the scoring with Cole Sillinger’s goal, assisted by Yegor Chinakhov. However, Elvis Merzlikins, despite making 28 saves, couldn’t hold off the Devils’ onslaught in the second period.
The Devils’ comeback began with Marino tying the game early in the second period. Holtz then put New Jersey ahead, followed by Hischier and Bastian’s goals that solidified their lead.
Columbus coach Pascal Vincent acknowledged the Devils’ effective transition game and lamented his team’s lack of sustained pressure and energy. Despite a late potential goal by Sillinger, a successful offside challenge by the Devils maintained their three-goal lead.
Boone Jenner’s return for Columbus, after missing 15 games due to injury, couldn’t prevent the Blue Jackets’ defeat. His presence wasn’t enough to counter the Devils’ strong play, particularly in the second period where they capitalized on Columbus’ mistakes.
This victory showcases the Devils’ capability to stage comebacks, tying them with the Colorado Avalanche for the NHL lead in this regard. Holtz’s recent goal-scoring form and Sillinger’s continued scoring streak for Columbus were also notable aspects of the game.
