In a significant move to enhance their offensive lineup, the LA Galaxy announced the acquisition of Brazilian winger Gabriel Pec from Vasco da Gama, securing his talents through the 2028 MLS season. The 22-year-old, who has made a name for himself in Brazil’s top-flight and on the international youth stage, fills a crucial Designated Player slot left vacant by the departures of Chicharito and Douglas Costa.
Pec’s transfer, valued at $10 million plus incentives, sets a new benchmark for the Galaxy, exceeding the previous record fee paid for Chicharito in 2020. His status as a Young Designated Player affords the Galaxy greater flexibility in roster management, a strategic advantage as they continue to build a competitive squad.
Will Kuntz, LA Galaxy’s General Manager, expressed excitement over Pec’s decision to join the club, citing his impressive performance in Brazil’s Série A and his potential to contribute significantly to the Galaxy. Kuntz highlighted Pec’s attacking skills, work rate, and international experience as key assets that he brings to the team.
Throughout his tenure at Vasco da Gama, Pec has been prolific, with 26 goals and 14 assists in 178 appearances, showcasing his capability as a versatile forward. His arrival at the Galaxy is seen as a pivotal development in the club’s offensive strategy, where he is expected to play a central role alongside Riqui Puig, Diego Fagundez, and Dejan Joveljić.
Head coach Greg Vanney lauded Pec’s qualities as a dynamic winger, emphasizing his eagerness to integrate him into the squad. With the 2024 season on the horizon, the Galaxy aim to make a strong comeback in the MLS, targeting a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs after a disappointing 13th-place finish in the Western Conference last season.
The Galaxy’s journey to reclaiming their status as MLS champions begins on February 25, when they host Inter Miami CF, marking the start of what promises to be a transformative season for the club.
