In a significant move to bolster their leadership and vision for the future, the New York Red Bulls have officially announced Julian de Guzman as the club’s new sporting director. De Guzman, a distinguished figure in North American soccer and the first Canadian to grace LaLiga with Deportivo La Coruña, brings a rich tapestry of experience to the Red Bulls, having played in MLS for Toronto FC and FC Dallas before assuming roles in management and as general manager for the Ottawa Fury, a team that has since ceased operations.

Following his time in the managerial realm, de Guzman ventured into founding, managing, and presiding over Simcoe Rovers County FC in League 1 Ontario, showcasing his versatility and commitment to developing soccer at all levels. Jochen Schneider, RBNY’s head of sport, expressed excitement about de Guzman’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience both domestically and abroad as a pivotal asset for the club’s future endeavors.

De Guzman steps into the role previously held by Denis Hamlett and arrives on the heels of the Red Bulls’ recent appointment of Sandro Schwarz as head coach. His addition is part of a broader strategic overhaul aimed at propelling the club to new heights, underscored by notable offseason activities including the acquisition of Swedish international Emil Forsberg from RB Leipzig. The transfer of Luquinhas to Fortaleza in Brazil frees up a Designated Player slot for de Guzman to leverage, complementing the talents of Forsberg and record signing Dante Vanzeir.

Expressing his pride and enthusiasm for joining the Red Bulls, de Guzman is poised to contribute to the club’s legacy and push for success in North American soccer. “The New York Red Bulls have been an exemplary model of soccer in North America, and I am very motivated to achieve great things with this team,” de Guzman remarked.

With a storied history of 14 consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoffs appearances, the Red Bulls are gearing up for their season opener against Nashville SC on February 25, signaling the start of a new chapter under Julian de Guzman’s leadership. The club’s fans and stakeholders alike eagerly anticipate the impact of de Guzman’s vision and expertise in shaping the future of one of MLS’s most iconic teams.
