Knicks Overcome Grizzlies 123-113 Despite Late Scare and Brunson’s Injury

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks secured a 123-113 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night, despite a late resurgence from the Grizzlies and an ankle injury to key player Jalen Brunson. Donte DiVincenzo led the scoring with 32 points, while Brunson contributed 27 points and eight assists before his departure due to injury.

Isaiah Hartenstein and Precious Achiuwa added 17 points each, with Hartenstein also grabbing eight rebounds. The Knicks showcased their offensive firepower by shooting 55.8% from the field, marking their 10th win in the last 11 games and improving their record to 16-3 over their past 19 outings.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged the team’s struggle to close the game strongly but emphasized the importance of the win. The game took a concerning turn for the Knicks when Brunson, amid MVP chants from the home crowd, appeared to injure his ankle following a foul by G.G. Jackson. Postgame, there was no immediate update on Brunson’s condition, though his teammate Hartenstein speculated it looked like an ankle sprain.

Despite the scare, DiVincenzo expressed confidence in Brunson’s resilience, highlighting the strong bond and understanding between the players. The Grizzlies, despite missing several key players, made a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 39 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. Vince Williams Jr. led the Grizzlies with 19 points, with Jackson and David Roddy contributing 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Memphis has been plagued by injuries this season, leading the NBA in games lost due to injury, which has significantly impacted their performance. The Grizzlies’ late rally, fueled by nine three-pointers in the fourth quarter, brought them within four points of the Knicks. However, DiVincenzo’s critical scoring, including a decisive three-pointer, ensured the Knicks maintained their lead.

As the Knicks navigate the absence of starters Julius Randle and OG Anunoby due to injuries, this win underscores their depth and resilience. The victory also highlights areas for improvement, particularly in defensive consistency, as they prepare for their next game against Dallas.

Both teams look ahead to their next challenges, with Memphis hosting Chicago and New York facing Dallas on Thursday night, as they seek to build on their performances and address their respective challenges.
