PHILADELPHIA — The Atlanta Hawks clinched a critical win against the Philadelphia 76ers with a final score of 127-121 on Friday night, breaking a two-game losing streak. Trae Young spearheaded the Hawks’ offense, scoring 37 points and playing a pivotal role in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Onyeke Okongwu and Saddiq Bey also made significant contributions, with Okongwu adding 21 points and Bey securing a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Philadelphia faced the challenge without several key players, including reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, who is recovering from a meniscus tear. The 76ers’ lineup, affected by injuries, illness, and the recent integration of new players, struggled defensively, allowing the Hawks to amass 73 points by halftime and establish a 17-point lead.
Kelly Oubre Jr. led the scoring for the 76ers with 28 points, followed by Tobias Harris with 21 points. Despite the team’s defensive difficulties, Philadelphia’s coach, Nick Nurse, acknowledged the effort and potential improvement had the team been more organized defensively from the start.
The 76ers also missed the presence of Tyrese Maxey, Nic Batum, De’Anthony Melton, and Robert Covington due to various ailments. However, newly acquired Buddy Hield and Cam Payne, who both scored 20 points in their debut, showed promise and competitiveness on the court.
Atlanta’s strategy focused on 3-point shooting, which proved effective as they led by 22 points entering the fourth quarter. Philadelphia managed to reduce the deficit to six and even four points in the final moments, but Young’s aggressive play and clutch scoring prevented a comeback.
Coach Quin Snyder praised Young’s performance, highlighting his crucial plays in the final quarter. Young, who also tallied 12 assists, demonstrated his ability to carry the team’s offensive load, especially in critical moments.
The Hawks’ victory was a testament to their resilience and strategic execution, while the 76ers continue to navigate through a challenging period marked by key absences. Both teams are set to face their next opponents on Saturday, with the Hawks hosting the Houston Rockets and the 76ers visiting the Washington Wizards.
Before the game, 76ers team president Daryl Morey expressed hope for Embiid’s return in time for a postseason run, emphasizing the team’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the roster for the remainder of the season and beyond.
