Kolkata, January 2: Mohun Bagan Super Giant commenced the New Year with a commanding 3-0 win over Hyderabad FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season. Goals from Stefan Šapić (own goal), Tom Aldred, and Jason Cummings ensured the Mariners’ 10th win of the season, solidifying their position as strong title contenders.
First Half: Mariners Assert Their Dominance
The Mariners began the match with high intensity, dictating the tempo from the first whistle. Their relentless pressure paid dividends early in the ninth minute when Hyderabad’s Stefan Šapić inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Subhasish Bose initiated the move with a precise pass to Liston Colaco, whose cross found Sahal Abdul Samad in the penalty area. Though Sahal’s effort was saved, a deflection off Šapić handed Mohun Bagan an early lead.
Hyderabad FC nearly equalized moments later when Ramhlunchhunga’s close-range shot tested goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. However, Kaith, despite an initial fumble, recovered to secure the ball.
Mohun Bagan continued to threaten, with Jamie Maclaren almost doubling the lead in the 17th minute. Maclaren combined effectively with Jason Cummings, but his shot struck the post. The Mariners finally added to their tally in the 41st minute when Tom Aldred scored a diving header from Liston Colaco’s pinpoint delivery, stemming from a well-taken corner by Sahal Abdul Samad.
Second Half: Cummings Seals the Deal
The Mariners resumed with the same intensity and extended their lead in the 51st minute. Jason Cummings controlled a long pass with finesse and linked up with Maclaren, who returned the favor with a deft assist. Cummings’ clinical first-time finish left Hyderabad’s goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh helpless.
In response, Hyderabad FC’s interim coach Shameel Chembakath introduced Ayush Adhikari, Muhammed Rafi, and Allan Paulista in a bid to salvage the game. Rafi came close with a long-range strike that tested Vishal Kaith, who was forced into a double save. However, the Mariners’ defense, marshaled by Aldred, remained resolute.
As the match progressed, Mohun Bagan brought on Greg Stewart and Abhishek Suryavanshi to manage the game. Liston Colaco continued to torment Hyderabad’s defense, creating opportunities, but Arshdeep stood firm to prevent further damage.
