CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have reinforced their roster by signing veteran catcher Martín Maldonado to a one-year contract worth $4.25 million, which includes an option for the 2025 season. To accommodate this new addition, infielder Zach Remillard has been designated for assignment.
Maldonado is set to earn $4 million in 2024, with the possibility of an extension for 2025 at the same salary or a $250,000 buyout. The 37-year-old catcher brings significant experience to the White Sox, coming off a season with the Houston Astros where he tied a career-high with 15 home runs and maintained a strong presence behind the plate with 116 starts at catcher.
Known for his defensive prowess, Maldonado’s catcher’s ERA ranked sixth in the major leagues last year. His contributions to the Astros include catching a no-hitter in August 2023 against Cleveland. The Puerto Rican native has a notable history of accolades, including a Gold Glove Award in 2017 and several finalist nominations for the honor.
Throughout his career, Maldonado has caught an impressive roster of pitchers, including Cy Young Award winners and All-Stars. He has a wealth of postseason experience, making him third in baseball history for the most starts at catcher in the playoffs, surpassing Yogi Berra.
Offensively, Maldonado holds a career batting average of .207 with 111 home runs across 13 major league seasons with several teams. His relationship with Pedro Grifol, the White Sox’s current bench coach, dates back to their time together with the Kansas City Royals.
The 29-year-old Remillard batted .252 with the White Sox last season but has been moved off the 40-man roster following the acquisition of Maldonado. The White Sox maintain a full 40-man roster as they prepare for the upcoming season with Maldonado expected to play a key role in their 2024 campaign.
