DENVER — The Denver Nuggets displayed a dominant performance against the Detroit Pistons, securing a 131-114 victory on Sunday night. Jamal Murray led the way with a season-high 37 points, and Nikola Jokic showcased his playmaking skills with 16 assists, as the Nuggets easily handled the Pistons, extending Detroit’s road losing streak to 18 games.
Murray rebounded from a previous off-shooting game against Orlando, efficiently making 14 of his 24 shots and successfully converting 6 of 7 free throws. Nuggets coach Michael Malone praised Murray’s energy and impact on the game.
Jokic, known for his scoring, shifted to a more facilitative role, taking just three shots and finishing with a modest four points. However, his contribution was still significant as he tied a career-high with five blocked shots and facilitated the offense, setting up teammates for easy scores.
The Pistons, struggling on the road with a 1-19 record away from home, were led by Jalen Duren with 20 points. Alec Burks contributed 18 points, while Cade Cunningham left the game in the second quarter due to a strained left knee, scoring only three points.
Despite limiting Jokic to four points, the Pistons couldn’t capitalize, with Duren acknowledging the overall disappointing performance. Denver’s last matchup with Detroit had seen tensions flare, with Jokic and Malone ejected for arguing. In this game, Jokic received a technical foul for exaggerating contact in the third quarter.
The Nuggets’ third quarter was pivotal, outscoring the Pistons 43-28, marking a significant improvement from their recent performances after halftime. Murray’s leadership and scoring were crucial, as he rallied the team to enhance their defensive effort.
Michael Porter Jr. and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope each added 18 points for the Nuggets, who have been undefeated this season against teams below .500. On the other hand, the Pistons are yet to win against teams above .500.
This loss adds to the Pistons’ current four-game losing streak, following the end of their record-tying 28-game losing streak against Toronto on Dec. 30. Pistons coach Monty Williams acknowledged the team’s struggles, particularly in the third quarter.
Looking ahead, the Pistons will start a three-game homestand against Sacramento on Tuesday, while the Nuggets are set to face Utah on Wednesday.
