DENVER – Nikola Jokic’s stellar performance, with 27 points, 14 assists, and 10 rebounds, led the Denver Nuggets to a 125-113 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. This game marked Jokic’s 10th career triple-double against New Orleans, the most he has achieved against any single opponent.
With 12 triple-doubles this season and 117 in his career, Jokic’s consistent excellence was on full display, particularly with his scoring streak of 25 or more points in 14 straight games against New Orleans.
The Nuggets bounced back from their recent loss to Utah, ending the Pelicans’ seven-game road winning streak. Jokic attributed the win to Denver’s increased pace and aggression.
Michael Porter contributed significantly with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamal Murray added 20 points and nine assists. For the Pelicans, Zion Williamson led with 30 points, Jonas Valanciunas added 17 points, and Larry Nance Jr. contributed 13 points.
Pelicans coach Willie Green acknowledged the challenge of playing catch-up after Denver’s strong start, which saw the Nuggets scoring 37 points in the first quarter. Despite efforts to narrow the gap, New Orleans struggled to overcome Denver’s lead.
Notable moments included Reggie Jackson’s crucial plays at the end of the third quarter, which extended Denver’s lead, and Williamson’s dunk in the fourth that briefly revived the Pelicans’ hopes. However, Murray’s fadeaway jumper and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s 3-pointer secured the Nuggets’ victory.
Jokic’s exceptional playmaking was highlighted by a remarkable assist to Aaron Gordon, showcasing his creative and skillful passing. Nuggets coach Michael Malone likened Jokic’s flair to basketball legends like Magic Johnson and “Pistol” Pete Maravich.
Reflecting on the play, Jokic emphasized his intent to deliver the ball quickly to an open Gordon, showcasing his keen court vision and quick decision-making.
Looking ahead, the Pelicans will face Dallas in back-to-back games, while the Nuggets host Indiana on Sunday. Denver’s win, fueled by Jokic’s outstanding performance, demonstrates their potential as a formidable team in the league.
