Apprentice defeating the Master: 16-year-old Andreeva beats Ons Jabeur

Mumbai, January 17, 2024: An exciting series of results continues at the ongoing Australian Open 2024, as in a fairytale result, the 2023 WTA Newcomer of the Year, Mirra Andreeva, showcased pure class to beat 3-time Grand Slam Finalist Ons Jabeur in Round 2 of the Australian Open. The 16-year-old Russian International displayed top-level athleticism to edge past the sixth-seeded Ons Jabeur, becoming the first player aged 17 or younger to defeat a Top 10 player at the Australian Open since Coco Gauff defeated then-defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round of the 2019 tournament. Speaking about her pre-match nerves, Andreeva said, “I was really nervous before the match because I have always been inspired by Ons Jabeur, by the way she plays.” She further added, “In the first set, I showed amazing tennis. I honestly didn’t expect that from myself. I just wanted to go and play on this big court for the second time, just to enjoy tennis, just to enjoy the time, and I did.” Reflecting on her growth from the previous year, she added, “Last year I was 15, but now I think I am a bit more mature than I was before. Over this year, I think I have changed a lot, and I think you can see it on the court.”
Mirra Andreeva is through to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the third time in her career. Can the young prodigy Mirra Andreeva keep the momentum and win the 3rd Round? Watch Mirra Andreeva take on Frenchwoman Diane Parry in the 3rd round of the Australian Open on Friday, January 19th, live only on Sony Sports Network. Sony Sports Network will bring all the LIVE action from the tournament in English and Hindi, while Tamil and Telugu language feeds will be added from the Quarterfinals stage onwards
