Sporting Kansas City and sporting director Gavin Wilkinson have mutually agreed to part ways, just eight days after Wilkinson was formally hired. The club’s principal owner, Michael Illig, released a statement confirming the departure, emphasizing the importance of the Sporting Kansas City community, including fans, supporters, partners, and stakeholders. Peter Vermes, previously serving as the club’s technical director and then sporting director, has been named the chief soccer officer and manager of Sporting Kansas City. Vermes, the longest-tenured manager in MLS history, will oversee the club’s soccer operations and continue his role as the team’s coach. He has led the team to notable successes, including the 2013 MLS Cup and three US Open Cup championships.
