Magic Triumph Over Pistons, Wagner Shines with 38 Points

DETROIT — In a stellar Sunday showdown, Franz Wagner matched his career high with 38 points, leading the Orlando Magic to a 111-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Wagner’s exceptional performance, with 27 points coming in the second half, propelled the Magic to their third consecutive win.

Magic coach Jamahl Mosley lauded Wagner’s play, noting his poise and impressive scoring efficiency, particularly highlighting that Wagner achieved his 38 points without a single free throw attempt. Alongside Wagner, Paolo Banchero contributed 20 points, helping to secure the victory for Orlando.

The match also featured a significant contribution from players with connections to Michigan, with Wagner, Moritz Wagner, and Gary Harris combining for 58 points, much to the delight of the Little Caesars Arena crowd. Franz Wagner, reflecting on his strategy, emphasized the importance of making plays and taking advantage of the team’s shooting prowess.

The Pistons, struggling with a 6-43 record, saw Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey each scoring 18 points. However, their efforts were overshadowed by the Magic’s dynamic play, particularly in the fourth quarter where local talents Wagner and Harris dominated, extending the lead and silencing the home crowd.

Despite Detroit’s attempts to rally, they were hampered by missed opportunities and turnovers. Pistons coach Monty Williams expressed disappointment in the team’s defensive efforts and acknowledged the Magic’s defensive pressure.

The Magic’s victory was a team effort, with notable performances across the board, including Ausar Thompson’s impactful play in the third quarter. Despite the Pistons’ efforts to tie the game early in the fourth, Orlando surged ahead, outscoring Detroit significantly in the closing quarter.

Looking ahead, the Magic are set to face the Miami Heat, while the Pistons will take on the Sacramento Kings, each team aiming to build on their performances as the season progresses.
