The New Orleans Saints are facing a pivotal moment in their season as they prepare for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, with their starting quarterback Derek Carr’s participation hanging in the balance. Carr, who has been dealing with a concussion and rib and right shoulder injuries, practiced fully on Friday but remains questionable for the upcoming match.

Carr’s resilience has been notable this season, as he has not missed a start despite multiple injuries. However, his availability for Sunday is contingent on passing through concussion protocol, a process that remains uncertain. This follows a tough Week 13 loss to Detroit, where Carr had to exit the game after a severe blow, marking his second time in concussion protocol and the third time he’s been pulled out of a game due to injury this year.

Should Carr fail to clear the concussion protocol, the Saints might have to turn to Jameis Winston, who could be making his first start of the 2023 season. The quarterback situation is further complicated by the status of Taysom Hill, known for his versatility in playing quarterback, tight end, and other roles. Hill, who is currently dealing with foot and left-hand injuries, is also questionable. He missed practice all week, with head coach Dennis Allen indicating that the foot injury is a more significant concern for Hill’s ability to play on Sunday.

The injury woes for the Saints extend beyond their quarterbacks. The team’s injury report includes running back Kendre Miller (ankle) and defensive end Isaiah Foskey (quad), both ruled out for the game. Additionally, receiver Chris Olave (illness), defensive end Cam Jordan (ankle), wide receiver Rashid Shaheed (thigh), tight end Juwan Johnson (quad), linebacker Pete Werner (shoulder/oblique), guard Nick Saldiveri (shoulder), and kicker Blake Grupe (groin) are all listed as questionable.

Sitting at a 5-7 record and currently on a three-game losing streak, the Saints are at a critical juncture in their campaign. As they prepare to face the Panthers, the team’s depth and resilience will be tested, and their ability to navigate through these injury challenges will be crucial in their quest to stay competitive in the NFC South.
