UCL: Manchester City’s Academy Stars Shine in 3-2 Champions League Victory Over Red Star Belgrade

Manchester City’s young talents stepped into the spotlight as they secured a thrilling 3-2 win against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League group stage finale on Wednesday, marking a significant achievement for the club’s academy program.

Micah Hamilton, a 20-year-old academy product, made a dream senior debut by scoring in the 19th minute. Cutting around a Belgrade defender, Hamilton expertly fired the ball from a tight angle into the far corner, showcasing his potential and skill.

Oscar Bobb, another 20-year-old academy graduate, doubled City’s lead in the 62nd minute with an impressive solo effort, dribbling past the defense before placing a shot into the bottom corner.

Kalvin Phillips added to the tally by converting a penalty, ensuring City finished their group stage campaign with a perfect 18 points from six games. This feat places them alongside Liverpool as the only English teams to win all six Champions League group games.

Despite the match having little impact on the Group G standings and Manchester City making nine changes from their Premier League victory over Luton Town, the performance was a testament to the depth and quality of City’s squad. Notably, star striker Erling Haaland was absent due to a foot injury.

The game, held at the Rajko Mitic Stadium, was a showcase for City’s academy, with Hamilton and Bobb stepping up in Haaland’s absence and delivering standout performances.

Red Star Belgrade, who finished at the bottom of the group with just one point, made a commendable comeback in the second half, energizing the crowd with their spirited play. Hwang In-beom and Aleksandar Katai scored late goals for Belgrade, bringing the scoreline to a close 3-2.

City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortego was called into action after the break, making two crucial saves before Belgrade’s goals. The late resurgence from Belgrade added excitement to the match, but Manchester City held on to their lead, securing the victory.

The win not only highlights Manchester City’s dominance in Europe but also underscores the success of their academy program, with young players like Hamilton and Bobb stepping up on the big stage and delivering when it matters most.
