NHL: Islanders’ Special Teams Shine in 3-1 Victory Over Oilers

ELMONT, N.Y. – The New York Islanders’ formidable special teams performance paved the way for a 3-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at UBS Arena on Tuesday. Bo Horvat and Anders Lee scored power-play goals, while Simon Holmstrom added a short-handed tally, highlighting the Islanders’ (15-8-8) effectiveness in both phases of special teams play.

Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau emphasized the team’s commitment to winning, citing their determination in battles and defensive efforts. Despite losing Julien Gauthier early in the second period, the Islanders showed resilience, adapting well under coach Lane Lambert’s guidance to manage the reduced forward lineup effectively.

Leon Draisaitl found the net for the Oilers (13-15-1), who are now on a three-game losing streak. Oilers’ goalie Stuart Skinner made 18 saves, but it wasn’t enough to counter the Islanders’ opportunistic play.

Draisaitl opened the scoring early in the first period, but Lee’s equalizer early in the second shifted the momentum. Horvat’s goal, coming off a precise pass from Brock Nelson, gave the Islanders the lead. Horvat reflected on the quick play, highlighting Nelson’s excellent assist.

Holmstrom’s NHL-leading fifth short-handed goal further extended the Islanders’ lead, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 opportunity set up by Pageau. This goal proved crucial, especially as the Islanders successfully killed off a subsequent 5-on-3 power play shortly after.

Pageau praised the team’s collective effort, especially during the critical penalty kill. “Everyone chipped in,” he said, emphasizing the importance of their teamwork and goaltender Ilya Sorokin’s performance.

Despite Edmonton’s offensive push in the third period, the Islanders’ defense stood firm. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch noted the need for more traffic in front of Sorokin, acknowledging their challenges in penetrating the Islanders’ defense.

Notable Notes:

  • Horvat continued his impressive form, extending his point streak to 11 games (eight goals, nine assists).
  • Oilers superstar Connor McDavid saw his 12-game point streak come to an end.

The Islanders’ victory, marked by crucial special teams contributions and solid defensive play, showcases their ability to bounce back and secure wins against formidable opponents.
