SAN JOSE – The Arizona Coyotes continued their impressive run with a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center on Thursday, marking their fourth consecutive win. Key performances from Clayton Keller and Alex Kerfoot, who each contributed a goal and two assists, played a pivotal role in the Coyotes’ success.
Nick Schmaltz also had a notable impact with a goal and an assist, while goalie Karel Vejmelka’s 29 saves were crucial for Arizona (17-13-2). The Coyotes have shown remarkable form since their 1-0 win against the Sharks on December 15, with Sean Durzi returning from injury to add two assists. “Winning on the road is essential for our team’s success,” said Arizona coach Andre Tourigny.
The Sharks (9-21-3), despite efforts from Anthony Duclair and Filip Zadina, who both scored, couldn’t halt their losing streak, which has now extended to four games. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves.
San Jose coach David Quinn expressed concern about the team’s approach. “We need to balance our play better, especially when trying to create offensive opportunities,” Quinn said.
The Coyotes took the lead in the second period with Michael Kesselring’s wrist shot, assisted by Keller. Duclair quickly responded for the Sharks, tying the game with a breakaway goal. Keller then restored Arizona’s lead with a skillful backhand shot, and Kerfoot widened the gap with a deflected shot.
“Kerfoot is incredibly versatile and a key part of our team,” Tourigny said, highlighting Kerfoot’s adaptability and contribution.
Zadina’s goal early in the third period brought the Sharks within one, but Schmaltz’s power-play goal and Lawson Crouse’s wrist shot in the final minutes sealed the win for Arizona.
Schmaltz emphasized the importance of capitalizing on power plays. “We’ve practiced and executed our power-play strategy effectively,” he said.
Jan Rutta of the Sharks remained optimistic despite the loss. “We need to focus on our strengths and keep working hard,” Rutta said.
The game was marred by an injury to Sharks forward Givani Smith, who left in the second period with a lower-body injury. Quinn did not provide an update on his condition.
Keller’s performance was a highlight, as he recorded his 22nd career three-point game, surpassing Brian Mullen in franchise history.
For the Coyotes, this victory signifies their growing confidence and cohesion as a team. The Sharks, facing a challenging phase, will look to regroup and address their gameplay to return to winning ways.
