Jack McBain’s overtime goal with just 20 seconds remaining completed an incredible comeback for the Arizona Coyotes, who overturned a four-goal deficit to defeat the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 at Mullett Arena on Wednesday. McBain found the net following a shot from Jason Zucker, marking a dramatic finish to a game that seemed all but lost for the Coyotes at one stage.
Sean Durzi starred with a goal and three assists, while Lawson Crouse and Zucker each added a goal and an assist for Arizona (18-14-2), who have now won five of their last six games. Goalie Karel Vejmelka made 20 crucial saves, helping to keep the Coyotes in the game.
For the Avalanche (21-11-3), Nathan MacKinnon extended his point streak to 19 games with a goal and an assist, and Mikko Rantanen also chipped in with a goal and an assist. Despite a strong start, goaltender Alexandar Georgiev and his team couldn’t hold off the surging Coyotes.
The game started in favor of the Avalanche, who built a commanding 4-0 lead. Rantanen opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period, followed by Jonathan Drouin, Logan O’Connor, and MacKinnon, who scored during a 5-on-3 power play in the second period.
However, the Coyotes ignited a stunning comeback late in the second period, starting with Crouse’s goal to make it 4-1. The third period saw an onslaught from Arizona, with Kesselring, Zucker, and Durzi all finding the net to tie the game 4-4, setting the stage for McBain’s dramatic overtime winner.
Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny praised his team’s never-say-die attitude, saying, “The boys have a lot of pride, and they compete every day, [even] in practice. That’s in their DNA. They never quit.”
This victory marks Arizona’s second consecutive home game where they’ve come back from a three-goal deficit, showcasing their resilience and fighting spirit. The Coyotes’ incredible turnaround serves as a testament to their determination and ability to seize opportunities, while the Avalanche will rue missed chances to close out the game.
