ANAHEIM – Warren Foegele delivered a stellar performance with a career-high five points, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a dominant 7-2 victory against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Sunday. His outstanding play, which included two goals and three assists, was pivotal in the Oilers’ fifth consecutive win, all achieved on the road.
Leon Draisaitl also made significant contributions with a goal and two assists, while Calvin Pickard’s 28 saves were crucial for the Oilers (18-15-1). Foegele expressed confidence in the team’s approach, emphasizing their patience and belief in each other’s abilities.
Max Jones and Frank Vatrano scored for the struggling Ducks (13-23-0), who have found victories elusive during their eight-game homestand, winning only once in five games. John Gibson, facing a barrage from the Oilers, made 32 saves.
Edmonton set the tone early, opening the scoring in the first period with Ryan McLeod’s one-timer, assisted by Foegele. Although Anaheim briefly tied the game, Oilers forward Evander Kane quickly restored the lead with an opportunistic goal.
The Ducks’ coach, emphasizing the need to better protect their net, recognized the correctable nature of the defensive issues they faced.
Edmonton’s second line, comprising Draisaitl, Foegele, and McLeod, was particularly effective, combining for four goals and six assists. Foegele highlighted the line’s synergy, noting Draisaitl’s exceptional vision and shooting ability.
The Oilers maintained their offensive pressure in the second period, with Draisaitl extending their lead. Foegele then added to his impressive tally with a redirected goal and another score off an assist from McLeod.
Vatrano’s goal for Anaheim in the third period briefly narrowed the gap, but the Oilers’ Zach Hyman and Brett Kulak added further scores, sealing a convincing 7-2 victory.
Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch praised both the team’s offensive prowess and Pickard’s key saves, acknowledging the goalie’s role in denying several potential goals.
Notable achievements highlighted in the game included Foegele’s record as the first Edmonton player with five even-strength points in a game since Sam Gagner in 2012. Additionally, Edmonton excelled in back-to-back sets during their six-game road trip, and they lead the NHL with 12 goals in the first five minutes of a game.
The Ducks welcomed back forward Brock McGinn and defenseman Radko Gudas from absences, while forward Troy Terry sat out due to an upper-body injury.
As the Oilers continue their impressive form, the Ducks are left to address their defensive lapses and seek a turnaround in their fortunes.
