Dawson Mercer and Michael McLeod each contributed two goals, highlighting the Devils’ (20-14-2) strong offensive showing, which has seen them win four of their last five games.
Goalie Nico Daws made 23 saves, while Alexander Holtz and Erik Haula each provided two assists, further bolstering the Devils’ attack. Hischier, the New Jersey captain, underscored the importance of this victory, recognizing it as a significant start to the year and a foundation for future games.
The Capitals, now with a record of 18-12-6, have lost five of their last six games (1-3-2). They were led by Evgeny Kuznetsov, who had a goal and an assist, and Alex Ovechkin, who contributed two assists. Goalkeeper Hunter Shepard made 22 saves for Washington.
Despite a strong start by the Capitals, with a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh previously, the Devils’ offense proved too potent. New Jersey scored the last three goals of the game, with McLeod’s spinning backhand goal late in the second period being particularly pivotal. Mercer’s third-period score further extended their lead, demonstrating the team’s depth and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Washington coach Spencer Carbery praised his team’s effort against top players like Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt but acknowledged the challenges posed by the Devils’ secondary scorers.
