Uzbekistan’s chess renaissance: 2023 World Rapid and Blitz Championships officially opened in Samarkand

Set against the backdrop of the historical city where some of the world’s oldest chess pieces were discovered, the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships were opened in Samarkand in a grand ceremony.

Gathered in the architectural marvel of the Silk Road Samarkand hotel complex, the world’s chess elite geared up for the highly anticipated World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, which will take place from December 26th to December 30th in the historically rich city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The opening ceremony, held today at the Conference hall of the hotel “Silk Road by Minyoun, unveiled a spectacular convergence of art, culture, and history. The hour-long event commemorated the history of chess, the significance of the World Rapid and Blitz competitions, Uzbekistan’s rising prominence in the chess world, and the rich heritage of Samarkand.

The ceremony started with a video chronicling the recent history of the World Rapid and Blitz tournament and highlighting the key moments from previous events. The next part was all about the money: a group of performers dressed in black and white – resembling chess pieces – got up to the stage, carrying a chest which, as it turned out, had one million dollars in cash in it. It wasn’t clear if the money was real or face, but the high presence of security guards sparked questions from the audience.

In another part of the ceremony, attention was drawn to Uzbekistan’s ongoing Third Renaissance – representing a third wave of cultural, intellectual, and national reform the nation has embarked on. It was revealed that a part of that project involves chess and that the government is channelling resources into educational initiatives and state-of-the-art facilities. A testament to this commitment is the establishment of one of the world’s most expansive chess centers dedicated to learning. In the press conference earlier in the day, Magnus Carlsen underscored this by saying that when asked in Kazakhstan last year what the best way to develop chess is, he responded, “I just said, look at what Uzbekistan is doing”.

Mr. Adkham Ikramov, Minister of Youth Policy and Sports of the Republic of Uzbekistan, conveyed his excitement, stating, “Uzbekistan is very pleased to be hosting such an important event in Samarkand, an ancient but modern city. The interest in the media, both from the region and abroad, is huge, and we are thankful for that. Each day for the past four months, we worked hard on this event, and we hope the next six days will be fruitful and successful”.

Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), expressed gratitude to Uzbekistan for hosting the event and emphasized FIDE’s objective to organize more global chess events, providing enthusiasts worldwide the chance to witness their heroes in action.

“Dear friends, in the next five days, new pages of chess history will be written. Many of the world’s finest players have come together to fight for the crowns in Rapid and Blitz chess. There will be excitement and tension, happy and sad moments, but above all – sportsmanship must prevail. To the players, the organizers and everyone involved in this event – I wish you the best of luck,” said Dvorkovich.

One of the main sponsors of the event is Kaspersky, the international cybersecurity company. In a statement released ahead of the event, Sandro Cisco, Head of Global Partnerships and Sponsorships at Kaspersky, said the following: “Just as chess grandmasters carefully plan their moves, cybersecurity experts employ carefully considered strategies to stay one step ahead of their cyber adversaries. At Kaspersky, we believe that understanding these parallels provides valuable insights into the complex world of cybersecurity. In keeping with the principles of strategic thinking, adaptability, and risk management, we extend our heartfelt greetings to all participating chess players, wishing them masterful moves, impregnable defences, and resolute determination. May the championship be a showcase of brilliance and unwavering skill!”

The drawing of lots

The final part of the ceremony was reserved for the traditional drawing of the lots to determine which pieces the top seed players would play with in the Rapid and the Blitz.

It transformed into a theatrical enactment where top seed Magnus Carlsen, Ju Wenjun and Lei Tingjie took part, which ended with them being dressed in traditional Uzbek robes in the colours of the pieces they will start the tournament with!

The drawing of lots determined the following:

Rapid:

Open – Magnus Carlsen, as the top seed, starts as White

Women’s – Ju Wenjun, as the top seed, starts as White

Blitz:

Open – Magnus Carlsen, as the top seed, starts as White

Women’s – Lei Tingjie, as the top seed, starts as White

PKL 10: Captain Jaideep Dahiya leads Haryana Steelers to emphatic victory over Tamil Thalaivas

CHENNAI, 25th December: Haryana Steelers cruised to a 42-29 victory over Tamil Thalaivas at the SDAT Multipurpose Indoor Stadium in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 match on Monday. Tamil Thalaivas’ poor form in their home continued as this was their fourth consecutive loss in the season. Their only positive takeaway was Sahil Gulia, the left corner, finishing with 10 tackle points.

Haryana Steelers came into the game with excellent form and rode the momentum to storm to a 5-1 lead. Both teams opted to play to their defences and the Tamil Thalaivas managed an early comeback through two SUPER TACKLES to trail 6-7 in the 11th minute.

However, Vinay produced one of the raids of the season to put the Steelers ahead 14-7. Up against a three-man defence, he got past Himanshu Singh, Nitesh Kumar and a managed last-gasp touch on Ajinkya Pawar before showing incredible backtracking skills and court awareness to get his fingers past the mid-line and inflict the ALL OUT. That raid set the tone of the opening half as the Steelers went into the break leading 18-12.

The Thalaivas had a poor first 20 minutes as they managed just four raid points and their ace raider Narender, who was brought back to the squad for this game, was substituted.

The Steelers continued to hold a lead of 7-8 points in the second half as Shivam Patare came off the bench to take over their raiding responsibilities. The Thalaivas had a golden chance to make a comeback in the 29th minute, but Rahul Sethpal executed a SUPER TACKLE to eliminate Jatin and extend his side’s lead at 29-20. The tackle also completed Rahul’s High 5.

The Steelers were reduced to three men yet again – in the 31st and 33rd minute – but the defence bailed them out as Rahul and Jaideep Dahiya both produced SUPER TACKLES. The Steelers led 35-22 with 5 minutes to go. The Thalaivas tried their best to reduce the deficit, but yet another SUPER TACKLE from Mohit capped off the victory for Manpreet Singh’s side. The 13-point win margin marked the Steelers’ biggest win of the season.

UKK: Gujarat Giants ease past Rajasthan Warriors to begin Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 with victory

Cuttack, December 25, 2023: Gujarat Giants showcased a complete performance in attack and defence as they defeated Rajasthan Warriors 41-30 in their first match of the Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack on Monday.

P Narasayya contributed to the Giants’ win with 8 points while Sanket Kadam and Suyash Gargate notched up 6 points each in the match.

Shubham Thorat, Abhinandan Patil and Akshay Bhangare defended brilliantly for more than 6.53 minutes to earn crucial dream run bonus points for the winning team.

Promoted by Amit Burman in collaboration with the Kho Kho Federation of India, Ultimate Kho Kho became a huge hit in the first season, emerging as India’s third-largest non-cricket league in terms of television viewership. It also became the first Indian sports league to secure Series A funding, courtesy of the UK-based BNP Group.

Gujarat Giants stayed on the top of the game from the get-go as they earned a dream run in the first turn, allowing Rajasthan Warriors to get only 14 points. They maintained their positive intent when they switched to chase and notched up 22 points to obtain a big lead in the first inning.

Rajasthan Warriors began the second inning aggressively and got the first batch of Gujarat’s defence in just 1.30 minutes. However, Gujarat Giants then earned two dream run bonus points to turn the match completely in their favour. Rajasthan managed to gain 16 points during the third turn but it wasn’t enough as Gujarat secured 16 points in turn four as well to clinch the contest.

Gujarat Giants will now clash with Mumbai Khiladis on Tuesday while defending champions Odisha Juggernauts will face Chennai Quick Guns in their second match of Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2.

The exciting action of Season 2 will be telecasted on Sony Sports Network’s channels and SonyLIV with live coverage of daily two matches starting at 7:30 PM IST.

PKL 10: Naveen surpasses 1000 raid points as Dabang Delhi K.C. register convincing victory

CHENNAI, 25th December, 2023: Naveen produced a masterclass as Dabang Delhi K.C. recorded a 38-29 victory over Bengal Warriors in Chennai on Monday. The Delhi Captain scored 11 raid points and also surpassed 1000 raid points in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Naveen Kumar and Ashu Malik effected raids as the Dabang Delhi K.C. took the lead at 3-0 in the third minute. The Delhi side continued to put pressure on the Warriors and reduced them to two members on the mat. Moments later, Delhi tackled Shrikant Jadhav and inflicted the first ALL OUT of the match to take a massive lead at 9-2. Maninder Singh picked up a couple of raid points, but Delhi still held the lead at 10-5 in the 9th minute.

Ashish effected a couple of brilliant tackles as Dabang Delhi K.C. continued to hold the lead at 14-7 in the 14th minute. Naveen pulled off a fantastic running hand touch and reduced the Warriors to just two members on the mat in the 16th minute. The Delhi side tackled Nitin Kumar and inflicted another ALL OUT just before the break. Dabang Delhi K.C. held a decent lead at 23-16 at the end of the first half.

Delhi’s defence unit tackled Maninder Singh and Shrikant Jadhav in the opening minutes of the second half and helped its team to take a massive lead at 27-18 in the 25th minute. Moments later, Naveen registered his 1000th raid point in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Maninder Singh and Shrikant Jadhav tried to attain momentum through raid points, but the Delhi defence continued to stand tall and ensure that its team stayed ahead at 30-20 in the 31st minute. Naveen kept picking up raid points as Dabang Delhi K.C. held a comfortable lead at 32-22 in the 34th minute. The side from the capital city rode on the momentum and eventually closed out a comprehensive victory.

ISL: Upbeat Punjab FC look to breach difficult Odisha FC backline

New Delhi, 25 December 2023: Punjab FC will look to ride on the highs of their maiden Indian Super League (ISL) victory last week as they prepare to host Odisha FC on December 26, Tuesday, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi to commence the 12th matchweek of the season. After a 10-match-long barren run seeking their inaugural win, the ISL debutants fuelled the fire with a Madih Talal inspired winner to secure the victory against Chennaiyin FC last week.

To go into the season break with two wins in two games will be incredible for the team, and they will be hoping to get the desired outcome considering that the Juggernauts come into this match after a rather unexpected goalless draw against East Bengal FC. It has been a middling campaign for Punjab FC so far. Starting off afresh in the top-tier was never going to be easy, but five draws in 11 games suggest that they have matched their more fancied oppositions many times over the last few months.

Their defensive solidity, coupled with Talal’s sharp creativity and goal-scoring instinct propelled their success against the Marina Machans, and Punjab FC will be eager to hold tight to those strengths against Sergio Lobera’s men.

Odisha FC are fifth in the table and a draw against the Red & Gold Brigade must have raised some questions within the camp given that they would have backed themselves to take three points from that fixture. Dropping points just deepens them in the mid-table muddle and the Juggernauts should aim to get above these setbacks and contend for the top spot in the second half of the campaign. The last match should be taken as an aberration for Odisha FC, who managed to shoot on target only once in the Salt Lake Stadium.

What’s at stake?

Punjab FC

image.png

Punjab FC will be gearing up nicely for their first-ever ISL encounter against Odisha FC, but a deterring record must be troubling them, which is the fact that they haven’t won in their maiden encounter against any team this season. Even their victory against Chennaiyin FC came during their second faceoff against the Owen Coyle-coached team. It is likely that they might be better off taking learning from each opposition, given that every side might be an unknown commodity for them at the moment. They can arguably work on stitching together more sustainable attacking patterns in the final third, though.

Punjab FC have taken 47% of their shots from outside of the box in this campaign, which is the highest amongst all teams. Though it speaks highly of the individual brilliance and confidence amongst their players, a team naturally enhances their goal-scoring chances when they start testing the opposition’s goalkeeper from nearer or inside the box. Talal’s winner in the previous game testified that, as he blazed into the box and fired one past Debjit Majumder on the near post to get his side the three points. Will this be an insight that Punjab FC intends to work upon in this match? Let’s wait and watch.

Odisha FC

image.png

Odisha FC have kept four clean sheets in their last five games, including a couple in the last two games on a bounce. Never before in the ISL have the Juggernauts not conceded a goal in three consecutive matches. However, a disciplined defensive unit is the base or the foundation upon which the success of any Lobera-coached side is built. The centre-back duo of Mourtada Fall and Carlos Delgado has been at the top of the game throughout, with the former chipping in with crucial goals, helping them maximise set-piece situations from time to time.

The midfield has blended creativity with a sense of solidity that ensures that both the objectives are fulfilled, whereas the frontline headed by the experienced duo of Roy Krishna and Diego Mauricio instil significant confidence amongst the players. To cap it all off, they have a seasoned goalkeeper in Amrinder Singh, who has become the custodian to keep the most clean sheets (42) in ISL history. Despite the strength of their offensive unit, Odisha FC did not really fire from all cylinders in the match against East Bengal FC. Such minor slip ups can be costly for their overall ambitions for the season, and hence Lobera should be looking to get his men back on track from the forthcoming fixture onwards.

Key Players

Madih Talal (Punjab FC)

It’s difficult to look beyond the 26-year-old French attacking midfielder after he single-handedly pioneered Punjab FC to victory in the previous match. Madih Talal was the star of the show against Chennaiyin FC, and he will have to be the star of many such shows moving forward for his team to see similar successes in the second half of the season. In 11 appearances, Talal has one goal and two assists to his name. He has created 19 goal-scoring opportunities, taking 23 shots, and earning a total of 34 fouls so far.

His interlinking with Luka Majcen and Juan Mera can induce incredible creativity and sharpness in Punjab FC’s offensive endeavours. More than anything, Talal is gifted enough to take on the opposition and produce a magical moment in an individual capacity against the flow of events. Such unpredictability is often helpful, provided Punjab FC can still hope by resting on his shoulders even if they are pegged back by Odisha FC in certain phases of the upcoming game.

Amrinder Singh (Odisha FC)

Amrinder Singh has arguably rediscovered his best form under Lobera – the manager under whom he captained Mumbai City FC to the historic domestic league double in ISL 2020-21. His reflexes have been sharp, and his distribution has been accurate, allowing Odisha FC to build attacking moves in different ways. He has the ability to launch a long ball to target forwards like Krishna and Mauricio upfront, ensuring that the Juggernauts can take a more direct route to the goal whenever required too. One of Punjab FC’s biggest strengths is to test the opposition from distance, and Amrinder is well adept at thwarting them, having made 11 saves against shots from outside the box in the current ISL season, the most by any goalkeeper to have maintained a 100% save rate against such shots in 2023-24.

Head-to-Head

This is the first fixture in the ISL between the two sides.

Trivia: Odisha FC midfielder Ahmed Jahouh has made the most successful long passes (104) by any player in ISL 2023-24.

Team Talk

image.png

“We are completely focused on today. About the game, I think they (Punjab FC) are playing well; they are trying to play good football. I like the team very much. Obviously, it’s their first season and the competition in the ISL is very difficult. But they have shown progress and the last win must have given them motivation for this game,” Odisha FC head coach Sergio Lobera said in the pre-match press conference.

image.png

“We are very happy that we won our first match in the ISL. But, we have made many mistakes in the past when we played well, were winning, but could not register the win. So, we should be more conscious about our upcoming matches, and also plan accordingly to give a good performance tomorrow,” Punjab FC assistant coach Sankarlal Chakraborty said prior to the game.

Teams seek to sign off 2023 on a high as ISL 2023-24 reaches halfway mark with upcoming Matchweek 12

image.png

The Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 matchweek 12 commences on Boxing Day, Tuesday, post-Christmas celebrations. As the competition heads to take a break at the halfway stage, Odisha FC will play twice in the coming set of matches, whereas teams from across the table square off against each other to move forward in their quest of realising their objectives for the campaign.

Punjab FC and Jamshedpur FC will hope to build on their confidence and momentum from their much-needed victories last week, whereas the duo of Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City FC will look to bounce back from their recent setbacks. FC Goa will round off the first-half of the ISL 2023-24 season in Guwahati against NorthEast United FC, as the Highlanders hope to break free from their six-match winless run. Here are certain key themes to look forward to in the coming week of the campaign.

Marquee clash in Kolkata

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) is in a difficult spot at the moment, having lost their last two games against Mumbai City FC and FC Goa. These matches were opportunities for them to bridge the gaps at the top of the standings, but the Mariners were unable to do so, arguably compelling head coach Juan Ferrando to go back to the drawing board.

On December 27, they await the arrival of the high-flying Kerala Blasters FC, who beat the Islanders 2-0 in Kochi on Sunday. Ivan Vukomanovic and his side are a different threat at home though, and the Mariners will be riding on the support of their own fan base as these two star-studded teams clash promising fierce fireworks and some top-class footballing action in matchweek 12.

image.png

Odisha FC can’t afford dropping points

Sergio Lobera & Co. hit a roadblock in Kolkata when they played a goalless draw against East Bengal FC. The Juggernauts could hit only a shot on target during the game as they succumbed to their third draw of the season, taking their tally of dropped points to 12 after 10 games.

Lobera will be hopeful of warding off these concerns at the home of Punjab FC on Tuesday, before they host Jamshedpur FC on December 29. There is undoubted quality and experience stuffed in this Odisha FC unit and that has reflected in their successes in the AFC Cup too. However, they need to brush aside these temporary phases of inconsistency that can take a big toll in their eventual outcome of the campaign.

image.png

Mumbai City FC, Chennaiyin FC seek turnarounds

Chennaiyin FC were nicely garnering some positive momentum before they were hit with a defeat against Punjab FC in New Delhi. However, Owen Coyle has had enough time to make corrections to that as the Marina Machans prepare to take on Mumbai City FC away from home on December 28. Chennaiyin FC have found their goal-scoring boots, thanks to a gifted frontline as they have struck the back of the net 15 times in 11 games.

Regardless of the purported gap in the quality of their squad and the Islanders, Coyle is capable of making his team take the game to the Islanders. Mumbai City FC heads into this match after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to the Kerala Blasters FC, which brought curtains down to their unbeaten start to the season. With two goalless draws and a defeat in the four matches since Petr Kratky took over, Mumbai City FC will be keen to find answers to their woes before the league break.

FC Goa looks to sign off the year in style

With Mumbai City FC’s loss in Kochi, FC Goa is the only team who is yet to face a defeat this season. With seven victories and two draws, their 23 points equals Bengaluru FC’s record from 2018-19 for the best start for any team in an ISL season after nine matches. The Gaurs now have a chance to go into the January break with a clean slate if they avoid a defeat in Guwahati against NorthEast United FC.

Manolo Marquez and his men have been relentless thus far, sweeping past even the best of opponents in sublime style. Their 4-1 victory against the Mohun Bagan Super Giant was the biggest loss that the Mariners have faced at home in ISL history, and the Gaurs look set to break many such records if they are able to continue this rich vein of form for the rest of the campaign.

.In another matchup, Sakshi of SSCB faced Telangana’s Refa Mohid in a round-of-16 bout. Ultimate Kho Kho preview: Mumbai Khiladis seek maiden win, Odisha Juggernauts aim to continue winning run

Cuttack, December 24, 2023: Mumbai Khiladis will continue their hunt for the maiden win in the second edition of the Ultimate Kho Kho when they clash with Gujarat Giants while defending champions Odisha Juggernauts will aim to continue their winning run against Chennai Quick Guns in their second match on Tuesday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack.

Mumbai Khiladis will come into the match having conceded a narrow loss in their first game of the league against Telugu Yoddhas. They suffered a 2-point loss when they met Telugu Yoddhas on the opening day on Sunday.

Abhishek Pathrode of Mumbai Khiladis said his team will have an advantage going into the match as Gujarat Giants will be playing their first match in the second edition. “We were mentally prepared to play a tough game against a strong team like Telugu Yoddhas When we played against them in the previous season, we lost the first game and won the second game, so we knew what to expect from them and we were prepared.”

He added, “Gujarat is a good team they qualified for the playoffs in the last edition. But I think we will have a slight advantage going into the next game as Gujarat will be playing their first game so a completely new experience of competing with the new team is not an easy task. Rest we will see on the mat.”

On the other hand, Odisha Juggernauts are the defending champions and registered a comfortable 35-27 win against Rajasthan Warriors in their previous match. Captain Dipesh More stated that they are thinking about one step at a time in Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2.

“Odisha won the title in the last edition and we aim to repeat the performance once again in the second season as well. We are taking every game as it comes and now our focus is on the upcoming match against Chennai Quick Guns. We have analysed the mistakes we made against Rajasthan Warriors and will try not to repeat those in the upcoming match against Chennai,” commented Dipesh More.

The exciting action of Season 2 will be telecasted on Sony Sports Network’s channels and SonyLIV with live coverage of daily two matches starting at 7:30 PM IST.

Jyoti Chhatri eyes spot in India’s squad for FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 after incredible experience on Valencia tour

New Delhi, 25th December 2023: Indian Women’s Hockey Team forward Jyoti Chhatri believes her experience at the recently concluded 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023 has helped her grow as a player. The 19-year-old has been a key figure in the Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team setup for the past year and played across all six games for India at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2023, scoring a goal during the thrilling 3 – 3 (3 – 2 SO) win over New Zealand. She also played a prominent role during India’s Gold-medal-winning performance at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2023.

While Jyoti made her Senior team debut at the 2023 4 Nations Women’s Invitational Tournament (Barcelona) earlier this year against England, the 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023 was another good chance for her to compete against some of the top teams – Ireland, Germany, Spain, and Belgium.

“I was elated to be considered for the squad for the Valencia tour. It is always a great opportunity to learn when you get to train alongside the senior team. Having competitive matches against such strong oppositions also helped me understand the tenacity and mental strength needed to fight to win at the highest levels,” Jyoti said.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team began the tournament with a 2-3 loss to Spain and a 1-2 loss to Belgium in Valencia. After losing 1-3 to Germany in their third game of the competition, India recorded a thrilling 2-1 win over Ireland to finish off the tournament.

Speaking on the results, Jyoti said, “While the results were not in our favour on the tour, we could recognise the important areas where we have to focus on and we were able to improve with each game. It was an important series for us with bigger tournaments coming up next year. We feel we were able to take a lot from the series, which has helped our growth as a team.”

India will be competing in the all-important FIH Hockey Olympics Qualifiers Ranchi 2024, aiming to secure a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will begin the campaign against the United States on 13th January and go on to face New Zealand on 14th January, before their last Pool B clash against Italy on 16th January. Pool A comprises Germany, Japan, Chile, Czech Republic.

“The preparatory tour in Valencia has boosted my confidence as an individual and I am hopeful to get a chance to be a part of the Indian squad for the FIH Hockey Olympics Qualifiers Ranchi 2024. This past year has really helped me develop as a player and I am eager to grab on to every opportunity that comes my way. The senior players, coaches, and support staff have been thoroughly supportive and have helped me a lot whenever needed. It is a dream for every player to represent India at the Olympics, and our journey to Paris as a team will hopefully begin in January,” Jyoti signed off.

The much-awaited second season of Ultimate Kho Kho was inaugurated in the presence of Tenzing Niyogi, CEO & League Commissioner, Ultimate Kho Kho, Sudhanshu Mittal, President, Kho Kho Federation of India, Tusharkanti Behera, Hon’ble Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha and Indian women’s kho kho team captain Nasreen Shaikh alongside Miss India 2020 runner-up Manya Singh.

Telugu Yoddhas were offered to chase first after losing the toss and used the opportunity to the full effect as they earned 24 points by getting all four batches out in the first turn. Pratik Waikar and Milind Chavrekar scored six points each to give their team a perfect start in the match.

Mumbai Khiladis responded with fierce attacking intent and took a lead in the match by clinching 26 points in the second turn. Ankit Pote’s swift moments proved to be a nuisance for the Telugu team as he got 6 points through two pole dives and a skydive. Gajanan Shengal also earned 6 points in the first innings.

The second innings also saw a positive performance from Telugu Yoddhas as they got 22 points and left Mumbai Khiladis to chase 21 points to register a win which proved too much for Ankit’s side.

Earlier, Akshay Masal contributed to the Odisha Juggernauts’ win by scoring 8 points, while Rohan Shingade, Avinash Desai, and Gowtham MK stayed on the mat for more than 4 minutes to take their team to the opening win of the season.

Odisha were on top of their game in the second inning as well despite Rajasthan earning a dream run. The defending champions got 16 points in the third turn, while Rajasthan managed to pick up 17 points with Majahar Jamadar clinching 4 points through 2 skydives. However, it wasn’t enough to bring them back into the game.

Rajasthan Warriors will go up against Gujarat Giants on Monday, while Chennai Quick Guns will take on Telugu Yoddhas.

The exciting action of Season 2 will be telecasted on Sony Sports Network’s channels and SonyLIV with live coverage of daily two matches starting at 7:30 PM IST.

16-year-old Anmol crowned champion at Yonex-Sunrise 85th Senior National Badminton Championships

Guwahati, December 24, 2023: Young rising women’s singles shuttler Anmol Kharb put up an outstanding performance to win the national title as she defeated Punjab’s Tanvi Sharma, with a stunning 15-21, 21-17, 16-8 win in the women’s singles final at the Yonex-Sunrise 85th Senior National Badminton Championships 2023 in Guwahati on Sunday.

The prestigious tournament, organised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), was held in Assam after four years.

In women’s singles title clash, which lasted almost an hour, Tanvi was a game ahead against Haryana shuttler after the first game. Though, that didn’t faze India No. 1 in U-19 and U-17 BAI rankings, Anmol’s confidence as she used angles on court very well, along with her excellent court coverage to make her mark in next two games. Already trailing 8-16 in decider, Tanvi complained about injury to the match officials as Anmol was eventually declared the winner.

Meanwhile men’s singles title clash was an upset as unseeded Chirag Sen secured the national title after defeating fourth seeded Tharun M of Telangana 21-14, 13-21, 21-9. India No. 2 in BAI rankings Tharun turned the course of the match in his favour in second game, after conceding the first one. But Chirag made fantastic comeback in decider, with clever strokes at right moments to stamp his authority.

In mixed doubles summit clash, recently crowned Yonex-Sunrise Odisha Masters 2023 champions Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto dominated the match from the start. They comfortably defeated sixth seeded duo of Nitin Kumar-Navdha Manglam 21-13, 21-8 in 25 minutes to race towards their maiden national title.

While Priya Devi Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra lifted the women’s doubles title with a superb come-from-behind 11-21, 21-14, 21-18 win over Maharashtra’s Ritika Thaker-Simran Singhi in an hour and 11 minutes long final. Coming into the final as favourites, Ritika-Simran started off well but Priya and Shruti kept their calm and composure, even after being 10-15 down in decider at one point, to outperform the fifth seeds in next two games.

Men’s doubles final was an edge-of-the-seat thriller where K Pruthvi Roy-Suraj Goala, who train at recently inaugurated National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, caused an upset by defeating Krishna Prasad Garaga-Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala 20-22, 24-22, 21-14. The duo of Pruthvi and Suraj conceded a very closely fought opening game. Keeping that aside, the aggressive duo left no stone unturned in next couple of games to hand a defeat to the experienced top seeds combination of Krishna-Vishnu in the end.

Defender Surjeet Singh was the star of the match for the Bulls with 7 tackle points. Meanwhile, Pawan Sehrawat scored 13 points and registered his sixth Super 10 of the season.

The two sides played out a neck-to-neck battle in the opening passage of play and were locked at 2-2 in the 5th minute. However, the Bulls inched ahead at 4-2 through a raid point by Bharat and a tackle point by Surjeet Singh. But the Hi-flyer Sehrawat pulled off a double-point raid to level the scores at 5-5 in the 10th minute. The Bulls and the Titans continued to trade points thereafter and were locked at 7-7 in the 14th minute.

However, Vikash Kandola took out Mohit and Parvesh Bhainswal on a single raid and reduced the Titans to just two members on the mat. Moments later, the Bulls caught Pawan Sehrawat to inflict an ALL OUT and take a decent lead at 13-9 in the 16th minute. Sehrawat effected a double-point raid in the 18th minute, but the Bulls still held the advantage at 16-12 at the end of the first half.

The Titans tackled Kandola in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Bulls tackled Sehrawat soon after and held the lead at 19-14 in the 25th minute. The Bulls continued to put pressure on their opponents and reduced them to just two members on the mat in the 27th minute. Moments later, Surjeet Singh tackled Ajit Pawar and helped his side inflict an ALL OUT and take a massive lead at 27-17.

PKL 10: Zafardanesh shines as U Mumba stun Bengal Warriors in closely-fought contest as Maninder Singh’s Super 10 goes in vain

CHENNAI, 24th December, 2023: U Mumba secured their third victory on the trot as they defeated the Bengal Warriors 39-37 in Match 38 of the Pro Kabaddi League season 10 at the SDAT Multi-purpose Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Leading the charge was Iranian Amirmohammad Zafardanesh with 8 points for U Mumba on the night.

LIVE MATCH CENTREEarly on, Sombir stopped Maninder in his tracks to get his team off the mark before Guman Singh and Amirmohammad Zafardanesh opened the account for U Mumba. Guman was especially impressive, sending Darpan and Vaibhav Garje off the mat with his raids. In a Do-or-die raid for the Kolkata-based team, Maninder showed his prowess to earn a bonus point and the star raider also got the opponent skipper Surinder Singh off the mat to equal the score in what was turning into a closely-fought contest.

Shrikant Jadhav entered the points tally after the time-out to get Rinku eliminated, but the U Mumba players never gave up on getting the crucial points. With every point won by the Bengal Warriors, the likes of Zafardanesh and Visvanth kept their team in the game. Then, the U Mumba defenders, led by Mahender Singh and his skipper Surinder, pulled off three consecutive SUPER TACKLES to take the lead over the Warriors as the scores read 18-15 heading into halftime.

The Warriors clawed their way back into the game early, getting the U Mumba team ALL OUT with some impressive raids and defensive tactics. U Mumba did well to get themselves back on level terms while Maninder Singh also created his own piece of history.

With a raid to eliminate Surinder, mighty Maninder earned his 1300th raid point in the Pro Kabaddi League, just the second to do so after the legendary Pardeep Narwal, who has 1611 raid points in the prestigious competition to date. But one player who shone out was Harsh Lad, making his first start for the Warriors. He displayed his prowess ending multiple raids of the U Mumba. He got six points in eight attempts from the left corner, keeping his team ahead of their opponents to the very end.

As the match went on, U Mumba used the SUPER TACKLE to their advantage to drag themselves back into the game heading in the final five minutes of the match. They brought on Amirmohammad Zafardanesh at the most important moment of the clash, and immediately, the all-rounder lifted the team over the Warriors. Despite having the lead for most of the second half, once again it was U Mumba who almost the victory with an ALL OUT over the Warriors in the final minutes of the match, although, Maninder and Nitin Kumar took the game very close but were unable to get their team over the line.

ISL: Sivasakthi steals the thunder as he snatches two points from NEUFC

Bengaluru, December 24: Bengaluru FC bounced back with a late equaliser by the 22-year-old Sivasakthi Narayanan to settle for a point after a 1-1 draw against NorthEast United at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 to start off the Sunday double header.

The two teams, seeking much-needed momentum, commenced the proceedings on Christmas Eve as the City of Gardens decked up beautifully to celebrate the festive season. However, celebrations didn’t come easy for the Blues early in the match, who faltered in their numerous attempts to draw the first blood in this encounter.

Javi Hernandez and Ryan Williams, who replaced Slavko Damjanovic in the starting XI, came together to keep the NorthEast United FC defence on their toes. Williams was finding it easy to get into the wider areas of the 18-yard box, delivering quick, short passes for the onrushing Hernandez and Sunil Chhetri in the middle. However, neither Hernandez nor Chhetri were successful in shooting on target, as they missed rather golden opportunities to get a lead with their respective efforts in the 17th and the 47th minutes with the ball sailing above the posts.

For a long stretch of the proceedings, it appeared that a drab, goalless draw was on the cards. NorthEast United FC did not make many chances, but one particular long-distance shot from Jithin M.S. in the 56th minute required a fully stretched Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to palm the ball away. Steadily, they capitalised on a Bengaluru FC backline that was arguably dropping their guard, as the fleet footed Parthib Gogoi earned a spot-kick for the Highlanders in the 86th minute.

Up stepped Nestor Albiach to take the penalty, as he shot it with such firm power and precision that Sandhu couldn’t help his team’s cause this time around. However, what that goal did was it reinvigorated the spirits of the home side, who perhaps realised the repercussions that could have come with another home defeat. They pressed all their buttons, attacking the box from lateral areas, and a curling, accurate cross by Jessel Carneiro from the left flank was met perfectly and nodded home by substitute Sivasakthi to salvage a point for the Gerard Zaragoza-coached side.

Key Performer of the Match

Jessel Carneiro (Bengaluru FC)

Jessel made a whopping 57 passes, completing 45 of them in this game. He made two clearances and interceptions each, in addition to tackling once, and creating a couple of goal-scoring opportunities to deliver an all-round effort. His assist for Sivasakthi’s goal was both timely and skilful, and the former Kerala Blasters FC star will be hoping to build on this performance going ahead in the season.

What’s next for both teams?

NorthEast United FC will host FC Goa on December 29 for their next fixture, whereas Bengaluru FC have capped off their first-half of the campaign with this match.

Brief Scores

Bengaluru FC 1 (Sivasakthi Narayanan 90+5’) – 1 NorthEast United FC (Nestor Albiach 86’)

History Made: India Triumphs Over Australia in Landmark Women’s Test Match

In a historic cricket match, India’s women’s team achieved their first-ever Test win over Australia, concluding the game with an eight-wicket victory. This monumental achievement was highlighted by Smriti Mandhana’s match-winning strike, leading India to a comfortable chase of the 75-run target in under 19 overs.

Australia, facing an uphill battle from the onset of the final day, struggled to gain momentum. India had previously established a commanding lead, amassing 406 runs in their first innings, the highest they’ve ever scored against Australia. The Australian team’s second innings failed to ignite, unable to recover from this substantial deficit.

The collapse of Australia’s batting order was evident, with five wickets falling for just 28 runs at the start of the fourth day. Key players like Ash Gardner and Annabel Sutherland were quickly dismissed, despite initial hopes of a comeback. Indian bowlers, especially Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana, played crucial roles in dismantling the Australian lineup, with Rana nearly achieving a hat-trick.

India’s run chase commenced with aggressiveness, marked by Shafali Verma’s boundary off the first ball. Despite losing Verma early, steady contributions from Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, and Jemimah Rodrigues ensured a smooth path to victory.

This match not only signifies a landmark win for India but also underscores the growing competitiveness and skill in women’s cricket on the international stage.

‘Defender Reza Mirbagheri was determined to raid for us,’ says Jaipur Pink Panthers’ Captain Sunil Kumar

CHENNAI, 24th December 2023: The Jaipur Pink Panthers pulled off a gripping 25-24 victory over Tamil Thalaivas in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 on Saturday. The teams were locked at 22-22 with three minutes to go on the clock when the Panthers sent the defender Reza Mirbagheri for a Do-or-Die raid and he changed the game for his team.

Speaking about sending in Reza for the raid, the Jaipur Pink Panthers Captain Sunil Kumar said, “Only myself, Reza and Ankush were on the mat before the Do-or-Die raid. We were thinking of bringing in a raider instead of Reza, but he told me that he’s confident about attaining a raid point. Then our Coach said let’s send him for the raid since he was showcasing confidence.”

Sunil further added, “Our team made a great comeback in the match. Reza Mirbagheri pulled off a couple of brilliant Super Tackles. His raid point was the turning point of the match. The Thalaivas’ defence unit played very well, but our defenders also stood tall.”

The Jaipur Pink Panthers clinched the victory on the back of 11 tackle points in the game. When asked if the team is relying too much on its defence unit this season, the Captain said, “The defenders win you kabaddi games. If the defence unit doesn’t let the opposition score too many raid points then it becomes difficult for them to move the game forward. However, we have some brilliant raiders and I feel that our offence unit will do better than our defence unit in our upcoming games.”

Preview for the matches on Monday

The Bengal Warriors will be looking to get back into winning ways when they take on Dabang Delhi K.C., however, the Delhi side’s raider Ashu Malik has showcased excellent form this season and will certainly look to take his team over the line.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Steelers will be looking to recover from their narrow loss against Telugu Titans. However, the Tamil Thalaivas’ raider Himanshu Narwal and defender Sahil Gulia will pose a strong challenge to the Steelers.

1. 2 points: The attacking team will earn 2 points for every successful out. This is a change compared to last year in the point system.

2. Dream Run bonus point: If one batch defends for more than3 minutes, they will be given 1additionalpoint and then for each 30-second time period, they will keep getting 1 point until the entire batch gets out or the turn gets over. However, the additional 1 bonus point in attack has been removed in Season 2.

3. Match point: The winning team will get 3 points while both the teams will earn two points each in case of a tie. If the winning margin is 3 points or less, then the losing team will also get 1 point.

For the knock out matches, if the points are equal, one more innings (one turn for each side as attack and defense) will be played. If again the points are equal, an additional Inning will be played on a minimum chase basis.

4. Points table: The criteria for deciding league standings with multiple teams on the same points will be as per following options:

i)          More number of wins

ii)        The difference of total points gain and loss

iii)       Head to head

iv)        Minimum chase

Key Terms:

1. Wazir: A player taking part in the match as Wazir can move in any direction freely, unlike any other attackers, but only in his attacking half. Points will be awarded the same as a normal player if he captures any player. During the defense turn, only 2 Wazirs can play the game but during their Attack only 01 Wazir can play the game except in Powerplay.

2. Powerplay: The powerplay will allow teams in the attack to play with two Wazir on the field at the same time. However, two wazirs can be activated for one batch only. Once all three players of that batch are out, powerplay will be over. Each team will have only one powerplay in one inning.

3. Review: Teams will have one review per innings i.e. two reviews for the entire match.
