Indian Women’s Hockey Team records 2-1 victory over Ireland in 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023

Valencia, 21st December 2023: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team wrapped up their 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023 campaign with a 2-1 against Ireland on Thursday. Deepika (4’) and Sangita Kumari (22’) were on target for India, while Captain Kathryn Mullan (12’) scored the only goal for Ireland.

India started the game on the front foot, with Deepika slotting the ball into the back of the net to give India the lead early in the first quarter. But Ireland were not fazed by the early Indian onslaught; they picked themselves up and went on to equalize through their Captain Kathryn Mullan shortly after.

In the second quarter, Ireland looked to claim the lead, earning two penalty corners in quick succession but the Indians remained resolute in their defence. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team went on to earn a penalty corner of their own and Sangita Kumari stepped up to score and put her team in the lead again before the halftime break.

The third quarter saw both teams earn a penalty corner each but they both failed to capitalise on them and the scoreline remained 2-1 in India’s favour heading into the fourth quarter.

Ireland pushed for an equaliser in the last quarter, pegging India back into their half and earning three penalty corners. However, the Indian defence rose to the occasion, saving all attempts and ensuring that they walked away as the winners.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s commitment to uphold the highest standards of good governance, as underlined in its Mission, marked a significant milestone today after the AFC Executive Committee approved the formation of the AFC Reform Taskforce at its third meeting held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Held on the eve of the FIFA Club World Cup Final, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the AFC President, began the meeting by extending his gratitude to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) for their warm hospitality and hosting their first ever AFC Executive Committee meeting. He also hailed the Kingdom’s bold ambitions to emerge as a significant player in global football.

Shaikh Salman said: “This is the first time the AFC Executive Committee is meeting in Saudi Arabia, and I would like to convey our appreciation to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation for being such gracious hosts. Back then, we took great pride in introducing several reforms which were eventually implemented by FIFA.

“With the establishment of the AFC Reform Taskforce, we want to ensure that the AFC remains at the forefront of implementing the best governance practices, and it is worth reminding everyone as we embark on this process that we must always strive to strengthen our great game for our future generations.

“With the unity and support of our members, I have no doubt that the AFC will continue to lead the way forward in good governance across the sporting world, and I am confident that we will set the stage for us to usher in a new era – a future where Asian football dominates the biggest stages in world football,” added Shaikh Salman.

Formula E’s unplugged series is back for the most dramatic season ever

LONDON, UK. Thurs 21 Dec. 2023 – Formula E’s Unplugged series is back – officially bigger and better than ever – taking fans behind the scenes of the most competitive and dramatic season to date in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Series Three of Unplugged goes live from Tuesday, 2 January, giving viewers an authentic and unfiltered account of Season 9. The latest series will feature the incredible title chase that was only decided on the final weekend, with driver rivalries that boiled over on and off the track, taking place against the backdrop of the fastest racing – and most devastating crash – in Formula E history.

Unplugged promises to serve up never-seen-before content of the record-breaking season, with more action and insider interviews that will entertain fans and give Formula E rookies an introduction to the personalities and storylines powering the growing popularity of the world’s most competitive motorsport.

Britain’s Jake Dennis (Andretti Formula E Team) won the Drivers’ world championship title in London on the final weekend of the season, which was the epic climax of a season-long tussle with rivals Pascal Wehrlein, (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team), Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) and Nick Cassidy, who would end up finishing second but not before powering his former team, Envision Racing, to the Teams’ World Championship title in the final race.

Seven different drivers from six different teams won races during the 16-race season which featured races in the centre of iconic world cities including Mexico City, Diriyah, Hyderabad, Cape Town, São Paulo, Berlin, Monaco, Jakarta, Portland, Rome and London.

Many of the biggest names in world motorsport appeared on the Formula E grid in Season 9, including Maserati, who returned to single-seater world championship motorsport for the first time in more than 60 years, together with McLaren, Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan and Mahindra.

While the story of Jake Dennis’s dramatic first world championship is a key storyline, fans will also see the incredible technological developments that are a hallmark of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. From the debut of the GEN3 race car – the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built – to NEOM McLaren driver, Jake Hughes, breaking the official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™, setting a new top speed achieved by a vehicle indoors – Unplugged has it all.

Tim Glass, Broadcast and Programming Director, Formula E, said:

“The Unplugged cameras captured every angle of what is officially our biggest and most dramatic season ever. There are clashes and crashes, high-speed action and intense rivalries, all playing out in iconic locations across the world from Cape Town to Hyderabad, São Paulo to London. Unplugged is the perfect way for new fans to catch-up on Formula E just as our new season begins, and for dedicated fans to get a whole new perspective on the entertainment from last season.”

Jake Dennis, driver for Andretti Formula E Team said:

“It took a momentous effort from the entire team last year to achieve what we did. So much happens behind the scenes that fans don’t usually get to see, and so to be able give fans an insight into all of the untold stories through Unplugged is fantastic. It’s also so much easier to connect with a sport when you feel like you know the people involved in it. Unplugged truly offers viewers a unique look at what it takes to compete in one of the world’s most competitive sports.”

The third season of Formula E: Unplugged will also be available in select territories via Formula E’s media partners across 8 episodes, while on YouTube the series will be available in 10 episodes optimised for the platform, featuring a mix of fifteen-minute and eight-minute episodes, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the drama and innovation that defines this pioneering sport.

Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship begins on Saturday, 13 January 2024 with the Hankook Mexico City E-Prix.

Hockey5s: A Game Changer
Hockey5s, while not a new format, has been promoted by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in recent years to grow the sport globally, particularly in nations facing infrastructural challenges. This World Cup marks the first FIH World Cup appearance for some participating nations, highlighting the format’s accessibility and growth potential.

Characterized by 5-player teams, Hockey5s is known for its dynamic, end-to-end gameplay. The ball is in play for about 90% of a match, thanks to rebound boards along the sidelines and backlines. This format typically sees more goals scored than traditional 11-a-side hockey, as players can score from anywhere past the attacking line. Played on a smaller pitch, Hockey5s offers flexibility in hosting venues, including urban settings, aligning with its young, urban, and fun identity.

The FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat represents a significant milestone in the evolution of hockey, bringing together nations from around the world to compete in this exhilarating format. As teams prepare, the anticipation builds for what promises to be a landmark event in the sport’s history.

FIBA proud to celebrate very special first ‘World Basketball Day’

MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA is excited and proud to celebrate a historic first-ever World Basketball Day after it became the first team sport to receive such a global recognition and prestigious honor.

Arising from the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and its plenary meeting that was held during August, on the eve of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, a resolution was adopted that established the inaugural World Basketball Day on December 21.

There is no better day to celebrate basketball than the day it was invented by Dr. James Naismith. It was on December 21 in 1891 that the first game of basketball famously took place in Springfield, Massachusetts.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis commented: “We are tremendously proud of the establishment of World Basketball Day and very grateful to the UN and other partner organizations who continue to recognize the positive role that basketball plays for millions of different people living around the globe.

“The fact that basketball is the first team sport to receive such recognition is a clear demonstration and endorsement of the vast societal benefits it delivers, as well as the unlimited potential that exists in utilizing Basketball For Good.”

Director-General of the United Nations at Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, said: “Aligning perfectly with our 2030 Agenda, basketball serves as a powerful enabler in driving sustainable development. It’s not just a game but a platform that changes perceptions, challenges prejudices, and unites communities worldwide.

“The sport’s ability to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, speaking a universal language of unity and inclusivity, is truly remarkable.”

To both mark and celebrate the newly introduced World Basketball Day, FIBA is organizing a number of activities and activations.

This includes a special event at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball for dignitaries from the various UN entities and Partner organizations in Geneva, as well as guests from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), and representatives from the YMCA.

A special social wall on fiba.basketball has been created where all posts with #WorldBasketballDay will be featured to mark the special occasion.

Argentina ends 2023 on top of FIFA Men’s World Ranking

Only 11 men’s international matches have been played since the last FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking was released in November. Nine of those fixtures featured OFC teams who participated in the Pacific Games. The other two involved Colombia, who faced Venezuela and Mexico in friendlies. Given the lack of action, it is small wonder that there are not many changes in December’s edition of the standings.

A year on from tasting glory at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, Argentina (1st) are still on top of the world as 2023 draws to a close. France (2nd) and England (3rd) round off the year-end podium and there has been no significant movement in the top 13.

Following victories over Venezuela (50th, down 1) and Mexico (15th, down 1), Colombia (14th, up 1) have leapfrogged the Mexicans in the standings. Despite their drop, the Venezuelans can take heart from having clung on to their place in the year-end top 50.

Though Panama’s ranking remains unchanged this month (41st, up 83.92 points), Los Canaleros can pride themselves on having made the largest leap in 2023, having risen 20 spots over the course of the year. The next biggest climbers compared to 2022 are Moldova (155th, up 19 places and 63.72 points) and Malaysia (130th, up 15 places and 56.27 points).

New Caledonia have concluded 2023 on a high note, having triumphed at the Pacific Games and risen one spot to 159th. There is a similar feel-good factor for Fiji (168th, up 2), Tahiti (163rd, up 1) and Samoa (186th, up 1). Indeed, the Samoans, like neighbours American Samoa and Tonga, recently made their FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking comeback, following a challenging period for Polynesian football.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking will be published on 15 February 2024.

Historic Showdowns and Record-Breaking Potentials Mark NFL Week 16

As the NFL season approaches its climax in Week 16, teams, players, and coaches are on the brink of setting historic marks or reaching significant milestones. This week features high-stakes matchups, potential record-breaking performances, and division titles up for grabs.

Key Matchups and Milestones

  1. Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers: In a rare regular-season clash between the top seeds of each conference, the Ravens (11-3) face the 49ers (11-3) in a highly anticipated Monday Night Football game. This matchup marks only the third time since the 1970 merger where teams with the best outright record in each conference have faced off in December or later.
  2. Record Watch – Brock Purdy: San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, leading the NFL with a 119.0 passer rating, could become the first player in history to record a passer rating of 130-or-higher in seven games within a season.
  3. Christian McCaffrey’s Historic Run: McCaffrey, the 49ers’ dynamic running back, leads the NFL with 1,801 scrimmage yards. With two more rushing touchdowns, he could join an elite group of players with at least 15 rushing touchdowns and five touchdown receptions in a single season.
  4. Kansas City Chiefs’ Division Title Quest: A victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day would grant the Chiefs their eighth consecutive AFC West division title, the second-longest streak in NFL history.
  5. Patrick Mahomes’ Milestone: Chiefs’ star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, with 3,703 passing yards this season, is close to joining Peyton Manning as the only players with at least 4,000 passing yards in six of their first seven seasons.
  6. Rookie Receivers Making History: The 2023 rookie class, with nine players having at least 50 receptions, has already set a record for the most receptions by rookies in a season during the Super Bowl era.
  7. Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen’s Rushing Records: Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen are on track to set records for the most games with a rushing touchdown in a single season by a quarterback.
  8. T.J. Watt’s Sack Record: Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, leading the NFL with 16 sacks this season, could tie for the fourth-most games with at least two sacks in a player’s first seven seasons since 1982.
  9. Micah Parsons’ Sack Milestone: Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons, with 12.5 sacks this season, is on the verge of joining Reggie White as the only players to record at least 13 sacks in each of their first three NFL seasons.

Conclusion

Week 16 of the NFL promises to be a thrilling and potentially historic week, with teams battling for playoff positioning and players chasing records. From prime-time matchups to individual feats, this week offers a plethora of excitement for football fans.

Saweety Boora aims to defend her crown as 7th Elite Women’s National Boxing Championships kicks off today

Greater Noida, December 21, 2023: All eyes will be on Saweety Boora, the 2023 World Championship gold medallist and reigning national champion in the 81kg category, as the 7th Elite Women’s National Boxing Championships 2023 kick off from December 21 at the GBU Indoor Stadium, Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

The competition, organised by Boxing Federation of India, scheduled to be held from December 21-27, will feature over 300 boxers from 35 units competing across 12 weight categories for top honours.

Hailing from Haryana, Boora, who claimed silver at the 2014 World Championships in the Light Heavyweight category, has also bagged gold (2022), silver (2015), and bronze (2021) at the Asian Championships. She aims to defend her crown in the category.

The 7th edition of the Elite Women’s Nationals will see the likes of Pooja Rani, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian in the 75kg category, and Haryana’s Manisha Moun, the 2022 World Championship bronze medallist in the 60kg category, facing stiff competition from Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaismine of Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) in the same category. Additionally, two Youth World Champions, Arundhati (SSCB) and Ankushita Boro (Assam), will contend for top honours in the 66kg category.

In the previous edition, the Railway Sports Promotion Board secured 10 medals and is eager to replicate their success in this tournament.

Jyoti Baliyan, Shashank Kumar headline top performers from Uttar Pradesh at Khelo India Para Games

New Delhi, 21st December 2023: The para-athletes from Uttar Pradesh performed to the best of their abilities during the inaugural edition of the Khelo India Para Games 2023, which was hosted in three venues across seven days in New Delhi. In second place on the medal tally, the North Indian state finished with 62 medals — 25 Gold, 23 Silver and 14 Bronze medals — to their name.

Among the top performers from the state was one of the biggest Paralympians in the country — Jyoti Baliyan. She is arguably the most renowned Para-Archers in India. She has represented her nation at multiple international events. In the Compound Individual Event, she lost to Sheetal Devi of Jammu and Kashmir in the final (141-138) to seal the silver medal as her own.

Baliyan is a winner of Silver at the World Archery Para Championship with Shyam Sundar Swami in the Compound Archery Mixed Team event after their defeat to Bair Shigaev and Tatiana Andrievskaia of the Russian Archery Federation (148-150). She was diagnosed with Polio, but despite setbacks, she has never backed down from any challenge.

Another prominent name from the state to make a name for himself was Shashank Kumar. The para-badminton star beat West Bengal’s Ankit Pradhan 21-7, 21-9 for the gold medal in the men’s singles Badminton WH-1 category. Shashank, who suffered from Polio at the young age of four, is also a winner of the Silver at the Uganda Para-Badminton International Level-3 in 2022 and a bronze medallist in mixed doubles at the Brazil International Para-Badminton Tournament.

Preeti Pal bagged the gold medal in two different events — the Women’s 100m T35 category with a timing of 15.65 sec, and the 200m T35/T37 category with a timing of 32.36 seconds. The Meerut-based sprinter missed out on a podium place at the Asian Para Games 2023 by a few milli-seconds in the 100 and 200m categories. Preeti was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age but is still among the top young para-athletes in the country.

Prachi Pandey, India’s latest Para Table Tennis star, won Gold at the Khelo India Para Games. She beat Gujarat’s Dhwani Shah 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-2) in the final to clinch the ultimate laurel in her event. Her diagnosis of spina bifida, a condition that causes weakness or paralysis in the legs, did not deter her from becoming an ace Table Tennis player, and now, she is also working in the IT department at Microsoft.

Meanwhile, Javelin Thrower Dipesh Kumar sealed Gold with a brilliant throw of 26.05 metres. The Thrower prevailed in a battle with his statemate Pradeep Kumar, who won silver with a throw of 25.30 metres.

Cricket: Countdown begins as future stars gear up for U19 showdown

The 15th edition of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup is set to begin on 19 January in South Africa, and with just 30 days to go, the excitement is already palpable.

Featuring young and upcoming talent from 16 nations, the tournament will excite fans the world over across 24 days, during the course of which cricket is sure to unearth the next generation of superstars.

A total of 41 matches will be played across five venues in South Africa. This tournament will feature some prominent cricketing nations, including five-time winners and defending champions India, the reigning ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup holders Australia, and New Zealand, who’ll be making a comeback after missing out on the most recent edition in the West Indies in 2022.

The pathway

The 11 full member nations who featured in the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022 earned direct qualification for the South Africa event.

These teams were South Africa (2014 champions), Australia (1988, 2002, 2010), Afghanistan, Bangladesh (2020), England (1998), India (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018, 2022), Ireland, Pakistan (2004, 2006), Sri Lanka, the West Indies (2016), and Zimbabwe.

For the five remaining spots, teams had to progress via their respective regional qualification tournaments.

Namibia had a near-perfect run in the Africa Qualifier, overcoming next-best Kenya by a comfortable margin of seven wickets, and topping the table with nine points to their name.

The United States started with a confident win against Bermuda. However, they suffered a close loss to Canada in the second game. They lifted themselves thereafter and churned out comprehensive wins, including a seven-wicket success over Canada in their Americas Qualifier rematch. This gave them a significant net run-rate advantage and helped them top the table, sealing their first appearance at an ICC U19 Men’s CWC since 2010.

A thrilling last-gasp win over the second-placed United Arab Emirates proved to be the difference for Nepal, whose unbeaten run in the Asia Qualifier helped them earn a ticket to South Africa.

New Zealand, absent from the 2022 showcase, bossed the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier, winning all their games in style.

Scotland made it through the Europe Qualifier unbeaten, ending with a comfortable victory over an emerging Italy in their final match to book their third successive appearance at the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

New format, same thrill

The upcoming U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup will be a departure from the Plate and Super League format that had been a feature at the tournament in previous editions.

The competition retains the same number of teams (16) as in 2022 and divides them into four groups of four sides, as was the case in the last edition. Things, however, get more interesting from here. As many as 12 sides will remain in contention for the ultimate prize after the opening stage – unlike eight in the previous edition.

The top three sides from each group will qualify for the next phase. Here, the top teams from groups A and D will be clubbed together in what will be known as the Super Six stage, and likewise with the top three teams from groups B and C. They will carry forward their points and net run-rate achieved against fellow Super Six qualifying teams from their respective groups.

Here, each side will play two encounters. These will be against those teams from the corresponding group, who finished at different group stage positions. The top two sides from these groups will then qualify for the knockout stages, comprising the semi-finals and the final, to be held in Benoni on 11 February.

Rare title defence opportunity

In the 2022 edition of the tournament, Yash Dhull’s India had a flawless run, with Ravi Kumar and Raj Bawa holding off a spirited England performance in the final to help the side to another crown.

While the age-specific nature of the tournament mostly ensures that a set of fresh faces appears in each new edition, India has still managed to win three out of the last six tournaments.

In a testament to their efficient youth setup, the side has consistently produced high-calibre players and have appeared in every single final of the U19 Men’s CWC since 2016.

However, the side has never quite managed to lift the World Cup on back-to-back occasions. This prolific honour belongs only to Pakistan, who won in 2004 and 2006.

The 2024 edition presents the young Blues with a chance to not just win their sixth title, but also become the first since 2006 to successfully defend it.

Can home advantage spur the hosts?

As hosts, South Africa will seek to make the most of their home advantage. The young Proteas are hoping to win their first title since the class of 2014 stormed to the title, powered by captain Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada.

David Teeger’s side begin their campaign against the West Indies, the 2016 Champions, on 19 January, before taking on 2022 finalists England on 23 January and Scotland on 27 January for their final group fixture.

Markram, who won the Player of the Tournament accolade back in 2014, is a testament to the platform that the event provides young international stars, and now leads the senior South Africa side. He was full of encouragement for the young Proteas in an interview with Supersport yesterday.

“First and foremost, all the very best from all of us who are a part of the Proteas family,” Markram said ahead of South Africa’s ODI victory over India in Gqeberha.

“It’s an exciting time playing for your country in a World Cup. It’s a great privilege, and we just wish them all the very best of luck.”

Bundesliga: Kane’s Stunner Seals Victory for Bayern in Close Contest at Wolfsburg

Bayern Munich Edges Past Wolfsburg 2-1 with Harry Kane’s Scintillating Form Continuing

In a thrilling Bundesliga encounter, Bayern Munich emerged victorious against Wolfsburg with a 2-1 scoreline, bolstered by Harry Kane’s impressive 21st goal of the season. The match marked a significant test for Bayern, led by Thomas Tuchel, against a resilient Wolfsburg side coached by Niko Kovač.

Bayern’s Dominance and Wolfsburg’s Resistance

The game started with Bayern asserting their authority, creating several chances early on. Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Koen Casteels was tested by efforts from Leroy Sané and Raphäel Guerreiro, but it was the Munich side that broke the deadlock. Thomas Müller’s exquisite cross found Jamal Musiala, who headed in the opener. Müller continued his playmaking masterclass, setting up Harry Kane for a spectacular 20-yard strike, highlighting the Englishman’s lethal finishing ability.

Wolfsburg, despite being outplayed for much of the first half, found a lifeline just before the break. Maximilian Arnold’s powerful drive reduced the deficit, giving the home side hope for the second half.

A Second Half of Tactical Chess

After halftime, Wolfsburg appeared rejuvenated, managing to contain Bayern’s attack while posing threats of their own. Rogério and Aleksandar Pavlović were instrumental in creating chances, but Bayern’s defense, led by Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano, stood firm.

Bayern’s attacking forays were less frequent but remained dangerous. Sané, in particular, found opportunities to extend the lead, though Wolfsburg’s Moritz Jenz was pivotal in thwarting these efforts. Arnold continued to be a menace for Wolfsburg, forcing a save from Manuel Neuer late in the game. Despite Wolfsburg’s efforts, Bayern held on for a crucial victory.

Statistical Significance and Team Dynamics

Harry Kane’s goal-scoring exploits for Bayern this season have been phenomenal, drawing comparisons to Gerd Müller and Robert Lewandowski’s historic feats. Müller’s dual assists showcased his enduring quality, while Musiala’s goal added to his impressive record against Wolfsburg.

Bayern’s win sees them maintain pressure on league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, while Wolfsburg reflects on a spirited performance against one of Germany’s top teams. The historical context of the fixture, dominated by Bayern’s wins, added an extra layer of challenge for Kovač’s Wolfsburg.

Squad Depth and Injury Concerns

Both teams showcased their depth, with strategic substitutions playing a key role in the match’s dynamics. Wolfsburg and Bayern had to navigate through several key absences due to injuries and suspensions, highlighting the importance of squad rotation in the demanding Bundesliga schedule.

Looking Forward

As the Bundesliga heads towards a competitive phase, Bayern’s victory at Wolfsburg signals their continued pursuit of dominance in German football. For Wolfsburg, the narrow defeat against a top-tier team like Bayern will serve as a learning experience as they look to climb up the league standings under Kovač’s guidance.

Leverkusen’s dominance in the match was epitomized by Patrik Schick’s exceptional performance. The Czech forward opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty in the 30th minute. He quickly doubled his tally two minutes later, finishing off a low cross from Jeremie Frimpong.

In stoppage time of the first half, Schick completed his hat-trick, heading in a corner from Alejandro Grimaldo. This marked a rapid three-goal surge within just 15 minutes.

The scoring spree didn’t end with Schick’s hat-trick. Substitute Victor Boniface added the fourth goal in the 69th minute, further cementing Leverkusen’s dominance in the game.

Sergi Roberto’s Brace Secures Barcelona’s Narrow 3-2 Victory Over Almeria

BARCELONA – In a closely contested LaLiga match, Barcelona edged past bottom-placed Almeria 3-2 at home, thanks to two crucial second-half goals from Sergi Roberto. The win ends Barcelona’s three-game winless streak across all competitions as they enter the Christmas break.

Barcelona, asserting their dominance early on, created a flurry of opportunities but struggled to capitalize on them. Raphinha broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, pouncing on a rebound after Almeria’s Luis Maximiano saved Ronald Araujo’s header.

Almeria struck back with Leo Baptistao’s clever chipped finish just before halftime. Initially ruled offside, the decision was overturned after VAR intervention, leveling the scoreline.

Sergi Roberto emerged as Barcelona’s hero, first restoring their lead with a header from a corner. However, Edgar Gonzalez equalized for Almeria, setting the stage for a tense finish. Roberto then clinched the win for Barcelona, deftly nutmegging Maximiano in a close-range effort.

The victory propels Barcelona to third in the LaLiga standings with 38 points from 18 games, trailing leaders Girona by six points and second-placed Real Madrid by four. Real Madrid and Girona have their matches scheduled for Thursday.

Almeria’s continued struggles in LaLiga see them rooted at the bottom with just five points, still searching for their first league win of the season.

The match highlighted Barcelona’s attacking prowess and their ability to bounce back under pressure, while Almeria displayed resilience despite their position in the standings.

Barcelona’s hard-fought victory over Almeria signifies their determination to stay in contention for the LaLiga title. Sergi Roberto’s crucial contributions underscored the depth and versatility of the squad. For Almeria, the narrow defeat, while disappointing, showed glimpses of potential that they could harness in the latter part of the season.

Milwaukee Brewers Sign Catcher Eric Haase to One-Year Deal

The Milwaukee Brewers have bolstered their catching options by signing Eric Haase to a one-year contract, as announced by Matt Arnold, the team’s Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Haase, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Monday, brings a wealth of Major League experience to Milwaukee. He has played in 323 games throughout his career with the Cleveland Guardians (previously Cleveland Indians) and the Detroit Tigers. The 2023 season saw him predominantly with the Tigers, appearing in 86 games, before moving to the Guardians via waivers on August 21. Last season, he made a total of 72 starts, dividing his time between catcher, left field, and designated hitter roles.

The right-handed batter delivered his most impressive performance in 2021 while with Detroit, smashing 22 home runs and driving in 61 runs across 98 games. Notably, his slugging percentage stood at .459, and his home run tally placed him fifth among Major League rookies. That year also saw him achieving four two-homer games and earning the title of American League Rookie of the Month for July, a month in which he tied for the AL lead with 9 home runs, led MLB with 29 RBI, and recorded a .627 slugging percentage.

Originally drafted by Cleveland in the seventh round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft from Divine Child High School in Dearborn, Michigan, Haase was later traded to Detroit for cash on January 8, 2020.

The addition of Haase to the Brewers’ roster is seen as a strategic move to enhance the team’s depth and experience behind the plate. His proven power-hitting ability and versatility on the field are expected to be valuable assets for Milwaukee as they gear up for the upcoming season. The Brewers’ fans and management will be looking forward to seeing how Haase’s experience and skills translate into success in the National League.

NEW YORK — Dec. 20, 2023 — Miami quarterback TUA TAGOVAILOA, with 175,772 votes, continues to lead all players in balloting for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games Vote presented by Verizon. Fan voting will conclude on Monday, Dec. 25.

San Francisco running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY (131,108) ranks second overall, while San Francisco quarterback BROCK PURDY (120,909), Houston rookie quarterback C.J. STROUD (113,490 votes) and San Francisco tight end GEORGE KITTLE (109,107) round out the top five.

The SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS lead all clubs in total votes received, followed by the MIAMI DOLPHINS, DALLAS COWBOYS, BALTIMORE RAVENS and PHILADELPHIA EAGLES.

The AFC and NFC player rosters for The Pro Bowl Games will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 3, live on NFL Network’s Pro Bowl special “NFL Total Access: Pro Bowl Players Revealed” and streaming on NFL+ at 8:00 p.m. ET hosted by Kimmi Chex and Mike Yam.

For the first time in three years, the National Football League will return to Orlando to celebrate the league’s best players at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon. Just like in past years, the Pro Bowl Games provides fans with an unmatched opportunity to vote for their favorite players to compete in a multi-day AFC versus NFC competition, featuring Pro Bowl Skills and culminating in an action-packed flag football game, led by head coaches Peyton and Eli Manning.

The 2024 Pro Bowl Games, hosted in partnership with Florida Citrus Sports, Orange County and the City of Orlando, will be a multi-day AFC versus NFC competition culminating on Sunday, Feb. 4 at Camping World Stadium. Fans can visit ProBowl.com/tickets to buy tickets, which start as low as $45, for Sunday’s event, which will also be televised from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on ESPN, ABC, Disney XD, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes.

In addition to Sunday’s event, ESPN will air the Pro Bowl Skills Show live from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 1 in the Nicholson Fieldhouse at the University of Central Florida. A made-for-TV event, the Pro Bowl Skills Show will feature the NFL’s top players participating in unique competitions that showcase their on-field and off-field skills. Announced earlier today, the 2024 Pro Bowl Games will feature new and fan-favorite skills, with cumulative scoring leading up to flag football on Sunday.

On Location, the official hospitality partner of the NFL, will offer guests elevated hospitality packages for a one-of-a-kind experience at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, including field access throughout the game, access to closed practice sessions, player introductions and premium seating to the game. Fans interested in tickets and hospitality packages can visit On Location’s website at OnLocationExp.com/probowl.

Fans can vote as often as they would like to send the league’s best players at each position to Orlando for the Pro Bowl Games until Monday, Dec. 25 across a variety of platforms, including:

  • ProBowl.com/Vote
  • On club sites (i.e., https://www.newyorkjets.com/pro-bowl-games/vote)
  • Social voting — During the final two weeks of voting (Dec. 11 – Dec. 25), fans can vote directly on “X” (formerly Twitter) by tweeting the first and last name of the player, tagging the player’s official Twitter handle or creating a hashtag including the player’s first and last name. All three of these methods must include the hashtag: #ProBowlVote. During the final two days (Dec. 24 – Dec. 25), social votes will count as double.

Player selections will be determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches, with each group’s vote counting as one-third toward determining the all-star players who will be selected to this year’s Pro Bowl Games. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its Pro Bowl teams. NFL players and coaches will cast their votes on Friday, Dec. 29.
