ISL: Mohun Bagan Super Giant keen to get back to winning ways as they take on hosts NorthEast United FC

Guwahati, 14th December 2023: In an enthralling Indian Super League (ISL) match, Mohun Bagan Super Giant clinched a crucial victory over NorthEast United FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Friday, 15th December. The win helped the Mariners regain their winning momentum after a 2-2 draw against Odisha FC and a 1-0 loss to Maziya S&RC in their previous fixtures.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant entered the game dealing with several injury concerns but demonstrated resilience and tactical acumen under coach Juan Ferrando. The team had set two major objectives for the season: topping the ISL league table and performing well in the AFC Cup. While their AFC Cup campaign ended prematurely, they have shown remarkable form in the domestic league, starting with five consecutive wins, a record in ISL history.

Facing a challenging opponent in NorthEast United FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant had to navigate through the Highlanders’ tough defense. NorthEast United, two points behind sixth-placed Chennaiyin FC, were looking to arrest their recent slump in form and revitalize their season under coach Juan Pedro Benali.

NorthEast United FC’s past encounters with Mohun Bagan Super Giant have been goal-laden, and they hoped to leverage their home advantage and fan support to create an upset. Their previous campaign’s sole victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the same venue was a source of inspiration.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s comeback against Odisha FC in their last match, where Armando Sadiku scored twice, was a confidence booster. Despite injury concerns, the depth and quality of their squad were expected to play a crucial role in this high-stakes encounter.

Key players for both teams included Gani Nigam for NorthEast United FC, known for his balanced approach in midfield, and Dimitrios Petratos for Mohun Bagan Super Giant, a consistent goal threat and creative force in the attack.

The match promised to be a tactical battle, with both teams vying for crucial points in a tightly contested league. For the Highlanders, the challenge was to overcome a formidable Mohun Bagan Super Giant side, while the Mariners aimed to solidify their position at the top of the table.

Women’s Blind Cricket: India thrashes Nepal and clinches the series

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 14: India on Thursday defeated Nepal by seven wickets in the fourth T20 despite captain Binita Pun’s show with the bat here at Police Gymkhana Cricket Ground in the first-ever Fedfina Women’s Bilateral Cricket Series for the Blind 2023.

Put into bat first, Nepal scored 165/6 in the allotted 20 overs. Sushma Patel, Ravanni, Basanti Hansda and Simu Das all scored as India chased down the target in the 19th over. With this win, India clinched the five match series 3-1 with last match to go on Friday.

Batting first, Binita Pun, who has been the highest run scorer in the ongoing series, provided Nepal a firing start. Mankeshi Chaudhary and Binita built a 101-run stand in the first 12 overs.

Binta (69) departed in the 14th over leaving Nepal at 116/2 but Srijana Pariyar continued the scoreboard. However, India bounced back in the game with flurry of wickets as Nepal lost 4 batters in the last four overs and were only able to score 165/6 after a good start.

Chasing 166, Sushma Patel and Ravanni completed India’s fifty inside six overs. But Ravanni was sent back to the dugout in the seventh over by Prativa Rai. Sushma and Basanti Hansda then stitched a 66-run stand to continue India’s chase.

India lost Sushma and Basanti Hansda in the 14th and 16th over respectively but that didn’t dent the chase and the side chased down the target quite comfortably in the 19th over.

Sushma Patel, who scored 45 runs in 37 balls, was adjudged as the Player of the Match. India and Nepal will now meet in the fifth T20 on Friday. Having already won the series 3-1, the Friday’s T20 will be a dead rubber.

India had won the first two T20s but Nepal came back in the third game on Wednesday, denying India a series win. However, India on Thursday won the fourth T20 to clinch the series with 3-1 with one match to go.

NFL: Super Bowl LXI Set for Return to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood in 2027

The Super Bowl is making a grand return to Southern California, with Super Bowl LXI scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood in February 2027. NFL owners approved the decision at the December League Meeting, marking the second time in five years that the prestigious event will be held at this venue.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed his excitement about bringing the Super Bowl back to Los Angeles, citing the city’s outstanding performance in hosting Super Bowl 56 at the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium. He anticipates that Super Bowl 61 will be even more memorable, with the Los Angeles Rams, the Los Angeles Host Committee, and other partners working to create a week of unforgettable events.

SoFi Stadium is the home of the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams, the latter of whom made history by winning Super Bowl LVI at their home site, becoming only the second team in NFL history to achieve this feat. The announcement also highlights that California will host consecutive Super Bowls, with Super Bowl LX planned for Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara in 2026.

The upcoming Super Bowls are set for different venues across the United States, with Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas hosting Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX in 2025, and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara for Super Bowl LX in 2026, leading up to Super Bowl LXI in Inglewood.

This decision reinforces Southern California’s strong association with the Super Bowl. The region’s history with the event dates back to the very first Super Bowl in 1967 at Los Angeles’ Memorial Coliseum. Super Bowl LXI will be the ninth Super Bowl in the greater L.A. area, with previous events held at the Coliseum, Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, and now the second at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium.

To cater to the high demand, On Location, the Official Hospitality Partner of the NFL, has launched its Priority Access deposit program today for Super Bowl LXI ticket packages. This program is currently the only way for fans to secure guaranteed seats for the game, as tickets are not yet available for sale.

The return of the Super Bowl to SoFi Stadium is a significant event for the city of Los Angeles, promising to bring a week of high-energy sports, entertainment, and cultural celebrations in 2027.

NHL: Vilardi Shines Against Former Team, Leads Jets to 5-2 Win Over Kings

LOS ANGELES — Gabriel Vilardi had a night to remember against his former team, recording an NHL career-high four points to propel the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday.

Vilardi, playing his first game in Los Angeles since being traded from the Kings to the Jets, scored a goal and provided three assists. His outstanding performance didn’t go unnoticed, as teammate Mark Scheifele lauded his playmaking and energy on the ice.

The Jets (17-9-2) responded strongly after their four-game winning streak was snapped by the San Jose Sharks. Coach Rick Bowness praised his team, especially the line of Vilardi, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Scheifele, for making a significant impact. Ehlers himself had a standout game with two goals and two assists, while Scheifele contributed two goals and an assist.

Connor Hellebuyck was solid in goal for Winnipeg, making 32 saves for his fourth consecutive win. The Jets showed resilience and team spirit, bouncing back from their recent loss to secure a convincing win.

The Kings (16-6-4), who have now lost three straight games, started strong with Anze Kopitar and Alex Laferriere scoring to give Los Angeles an early lead. However, Winnipeg’s comeback highlighted the Kings’ current struggles, with coach Todd McLellan acknowledging the need for the team to respond to this rough patch.

Ehlers initiated the Jets’ comeback in the second period with a wrist shot from the high slot. He later equalized with a breakaway goal, showcasing his speed and scoring prowess. Scheifele then gave Winnipeg the lead, demonstrating his skill with a backhand goal from behind the net.

Vilardi’s goal in the third period extended the Jets’ lead, showing his ability to make crucial plays in key moments. His performance was particularly poignant, considering his mixed emotions about returning to Los Angeles, where he started his NHL career.

Scheifele’s empty-net goal sealed the 5-2 final score, capping off a night where Winnipeg’s top line shined brightly. McLellan conceded that the Kings couldn’t find an answer to the Jets’ top trio, acknowledging their outstanding play.

Ehlers tied his career-high with four points, a testament to his offensive capabilities. The chemistry and effectiveness of Scheifele, Vilardi, and Ehlers were crucial to Winnipeg’s success, as they each finished the game with a plus-5 rating.

For the Kings, Arthur Kaliyev was absent due to flu-like symptoms, and Trevor Moore led the team with eight shots on goal. Despite the loss, McLellan remained optimistic, highlighting the importance of dirty goals and the hard work put in by players like Laferriere.

The Jets’ victory in Los Angeles is a significant morale booster, showcasing their depth and ability to bounce back. The Kings, facing a challenging period, will look to regroup and rediscover their early-season form.

NHL: MacKinnon Extends Point Streak to 13 Games in Avalanche’s Dominant 5-1 Win Over Sabres

DENVER — Nathan MacKinnon’s impressive form continued as he extended his point streak to 13 games, contributing two assists in the Colorado Avalanche’s commanding 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Ball Arena on Wednesday.

MacKinnon, who now has 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) during his streak, also extended his season-opening home point streak to 15 games, marking his consistent impact for the Avalanche. Colorado coach Jared Bednar praised MacKinnon’s perseverance through his early-season slump and credited his and his line’s work ethic for their current success.

Valeri Nichushkin was another standout for the Avalanche, scoring twice, while Mikko Rantanen added a goal and two assists. Sam Malinski made his mark with his first NHL goal and an assist. Ivan Prosvetov, stepping in for the Avalanche, made 29 saves, contributing to the team’s second straight win.

The Avalanche (18-9-2) demonstrated their maturity and control throughout the game, with Bednar highlighting their perfect start and strong finish.

On the other hand, the Sabres (12-15-3) struggled to keep pace, despite Zach Benson’s goal and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s 24 saves. Buffalo’s coach Don Granato expressed frustration with the team’s sluggish start and inability to execute simple plays.

Rantanen opened the scoring for Colorado in the first period with a wraparound goal, capitalizing on a drop pass from MacKinnon. Nichushkin then doubled the lead, scoring from a loose puck near the goal. His aggressive play in the first period was noted by Bednar, who felt Nichushkin could have had even more goals.

Miles Wood extended Colorado’s lead with a well-placed shot on a 2-on-1 rush. Buffalo’s response came late in the period through Benson, who capitalized on a rebound in front of the net.

The Sabres faced a tough start, with Colorado outshooting them 15-0 before Benson’s goal. Sabres defenseman Erik Johnson acknowledged the team’s flat start and the difficulty of recovering against a strong opponent like Colorado.

Malinski’s goal in the third period further cemented the Avalanche’s lead, with the rookie defenseman describing his thought process on the one-timer. Nichushkin’s second goal of the night, and his 100th NHL goal, came from a backdoor pass by MacKinnon on a power play, a milestone Prosvetov recognized and celebrated.

The game also marked a milestone for MacKinnon, who reached 800 career points, becoming the fifth player in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history to achieve this feat.

The Sabres faced another setback as forward Jeff Skinner left the game with an upper-body injury, with no update provided postgame.

The Avalanche’s win reflects their depth and skill, with contributions from both established stars and emerging talent. The Sabres, meanwhile, will look to regroup and address their early-game performance issues as they continue their season.

NHL: Holmstrom’s Late Short-Handed Goal Lifts Islanders to 4-3 Victory Over Ducks

ELMONT, N.Y. — The New York Islanders triumphed in a nail-biting 4-3 win against the Anaheim Ducks at UBS Arena on Wednesday, thanks to a late short-handed goal by Simon Holmstrom. His decisive goal with just 1:33 left on the clock was a display of skill and poise, as he skated to the bottom of the left circle and expertly lifted the puck over Ducks goalie John Gibson.

The game was a tense affair, with Semyon Varlamov of the Islanders making crucial saves in the dying moments, including a glove save on Ryan Strome and another on Frank Vatrano in the final seconds. Varlamov’s 21 saves were instrumental in preserving the win for New York.

The Islanders, with this victory, have now won four straight games and extended their point streak to seven games (6-0-1). Coach Lane Lambert acknowledged the challenging nature of the game and praised his team’s resilience and ability to find a way to win.

The Ducks, meanwhile, continue to struggle, having lost four consecutive games and 12 of their last 13. Despite a solid third period, Anaheim coach Greg Cronin lamented the team’s sluggish start and the failure to capitalize on a late power play.

Mathew Barzal, Kyle Palmieri, and Casey Cizikas also scored for the Islanders, with Noah Dobson contributing two assists. Palmieri’s early goal in the second period set the tone for the Islanders, and Cizikas’s goal off a 3-on-2 rush extended their lead.

However, the Ducks responded with goals from Troy Terry, Adam Henrique, and Sam Carrick. Terry’s goal, his first since November 1, came off a fortunate deflection, while Henrique capitalized on a broken stick play. Carrick gave the Ducks a brief lead in the third period with a fortuitous shot that deflected off an Islanders player.

Barzal’s power-play goal tied the game at 3-3, setting the stage for Holmstrom’s game-winner. Dobson remarked on the maturity and experience of the Islanders’ group, highlighting their ability to handle challenging situations and come together as a team.

Notably, Holmstrom leads the NHL with four short-handed goals this season. Bo Horvat extended his point streak to eight games with an assist on Barzal’s goal, and Dobson continued his impressive form with a five-game point streak, totaling eight assists. Additionally, Henrique’s face-off prowess was on display, winning 75 percent of his draws.

The win underscores the Islanders’ resilience and ability to perform under pressure, while the Ducks will look to regroup and address their ongoing challenges.

NHL: Hughes’ Overtime Heroics Lift Devils to 2-1 Win Over Bruins

NEWARK, N.J. — Jack Hughes was the star of the night as his overtime goal led the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory against the Boston Bruins at Prudential Center on Wednesday. The win showcased Hughes’s chemistry with teammate Jesper Bratt and highlighted the Devils’ resilience.

Hughes secured the win 2:47 into overtime with a stunning shot into the far corner, over the shoulder of Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman. The play was set up by Bratt, with Hughes expressing his appreciation for their on-ice partnership.

The Devils dominated the overtime period, outshooting the Bruins 6-0. Hughes, reflecting on his and Bratt’s synergy, likened their combination to “peanut butter and jelly,” emphasizing their effortless teamwork.

Dawson Mercer brought the Devils level at 1-1 early in the third period, showing off his hand-eye coordination by batting in a high rebound from Erik Haula’s shot. Mercer’s goal, his first in five games, was a critical moment in the Devils’ comeback.

Vitek Vanecek was a solid presence in goal for New Jersey, making 23 saves. The Devils’ coach, Lindy Ruff, praised his team’s patience and execution against a strong Bruins side.

On the other end, Swayman put up a valiant effort with 33 saves for the Bruins, earning praise from Boston coach Jim Montgomery for his consistent performance this season. Morgan Geekie scored the lone goal for Boston in the first period, capitalizing on a rebound from James van Riemsdyk’s shot.

The Bruins had been formidable when leading after the first period, with a 13-1-1 record this season, but the Devils’ comeback underscored their tenacity.

David Pastrnak’s breakaway chance in the second period could have changed the game’s complexion, but Vanecek’s save kept the Devils in contention. Hughes commended Vanecek’s performance, especially considering the high-quality chance from Pastrnak.

Hughes, who played almost the entire overtime period, was briefly replaced by Michael McLeod for a face-off but quickly returned to action, eventually scoring the winning goal. Ruff noted Hughes’s endurance and ability to recover quickly, crucial in the intense overtime period.

The victory marked New Jersey’s tenth comeback of the season, leading the NHL in this statistic. Hughes’s sixth overtime goal adds to his reputation as a clutch player for the Devils.

The Bruins, missing key players Pavel Zacha and Charlie McAvoy due to upper-body injuries, still saw a strong performance from Swayman, who has been impressive in recent games.

The Devils’ win, their third in overtime this season, places them alongside the Nashville Predators and Anaheim Ducks as teams undefeated in at least three overtime games. The Bruins will look to regroup and address their injury concerns, while the Devils will aim to build on their momentum from this dramatic victory.

NHL: Crosby’s Milestone Night Leads Penguins to Dramatic 4-3 Shootout Victory Over Canadiens

MONTREAL — Sidney Crosby’s landmark performance, which saw him tie for 13th on the NHL all-time scoring list, propelled the Pittsburgh Penguins to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens in a marathon 12-round shootout at Bell Centre on Wednesday.

Crosby, achieving a career milestone, matched Mark Recchi with 1,533 career points after surpassing Paul Coffey earlier in the game. His two goals and an assist were pivotal in the Penguins securing back-to-back wins, following their previous victory against the Arizona Coyotes.

“It goes by really quick, but to be in company with ‘Rex,’ having played with him, having watched him here,” Crosby said, reflecting on the significance of his achievement.

The shootout proved to be a nerve-wracking affair, with Jansen Harkins scoring the decisive goal for Pittsburgh on their final attempt. Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson spoke about the tension and excitement on the bench during the shootout.

Crosby’s significant contribution included a power-play goal in the second period to tie the game at 3-3. His consistent excellence drew praise from Canadiens forward Sean Monahan, who acknowledged Crosby’s influence and consistency throughout his career.

The game saw a series of momentum shifts, with David Savard and Jayden Struble putting Montreal ahead in the first period. Crosby and Jake Guentzel responded for Pittsburgh, narrowing the gap with crucial goals.

Montreal’s Sam Montembeault made 27 saves, while Pittsburgh’s Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 39 shots, including nine in overtime. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan lauded his team’s resilience and the crucial role of the power play and penalty kill.

For the Canadiens, coach Martin St. Louis acknowledged the team’s self-inflicted mistakes but praised their third-period performance. Despite this effort, Montreal has struggled at home, losing eight of their past nine games.

The game marked the longest NHL shootout since 2016, adding another notable element to an already memorable night. Additionally, Crosby’s 172nd three-point game tied him with Steve Yzerman for seventh in NHL history.

The Canadiens’ defensemen have contributed significantly this season, with their 23 goals trailing only the Colorado Avalanche in the league. On the Penguins’ side, Karlsson’s two assists marked his 50th multiassist period, a unique achievement for an active defenseman.

Looking ahead, the Penguins aim to build on their recent success, while the Canadiens look to improve their home form.

ISL: Bengaluru FC rope in Gerard Zaragoza as Head Coach

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Football Club, on Thursday, named Spanish tactician Gerard Zaragoza as the club’s new Head Coach on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 season. The announcement comes on the back of the club’s decision to part ways with Englishman Simon Grayson, who left the club by mutual consent following the side’s 4-0 defeat to Mumbai City FC last Friday.

Forty-one-year-old Zaragoza, who was part of Bengaluru’s ISL-winning squad of 2018-19 as Assistant Coach to Carles Cuadrat, is due to arrive in Bengaluru upon the completion of VISA formalities and travel documentation.

“I would like to welcome Gerard back to Bengaluru FC. Over the last five years, Gerard has had stints as Head Coach in top leagues across Asia. Through his time away, he has been in touch with us, and expressed a deep desire to return and give back to the club that gave him his first silverware in a coaching role. I am confident that he will bring back the brand of football that we have been used to in the past. He possesses good tactical nous, and has also been instrumental in improving young players. Bengaluru FC teams – from the youth academy through to the first team – will have a common identity in terms of style that Gerard and his team will work to implement. I wish him the best and am looking forward to the rest of this season,” said club owner and Director, Parth Jindal.

Zaragoza had stints at Greek side Panserraikos and, most recently, Emirati UAE Pro League side Khor Fakkan Club, where he was named Manager of the Week on two occasions. Argentinian Sebastian Vega, who was part of Zaragoza’s backroom staff at Khor Fakkan, Al-Ahli and Panserraikos, has been named Assistant Coach.

“This is a football club that I hold close to my heart, and the decision to return to this family has been the easiest one to make. I know the circumstances in which I am arriving at the club are extremely difficult, but also very challenging. I am sure that with the right direction, this club can get back to where it belongs. I can’t wait to arrive in India and begin work with the players and the staff. Most of all, I am looking forward to a reunion with the wonderful fans of this club. Together, we will make this right,” said Zaragoza, after putting pen to paper on the deal.

A former youth footballer himself, Zaragoza managed the Catalonia U14s and U16s and was also part of the Aspire Academy’s Qatari branch in 2010. In 2011, he was named Head Coach of RCD Espanyol’s Cadete squad. The Spaniard moved to Erovnuli Liga 2 side Locomotive Tbilisi in 2012, achieving promotion to Liga 1 the following year.

“Bringing Gerard back is a decision taken with a lot of thought and we believe he is the right fit for what this club needs to return to the very top. Gerard understands what Bengaluru FC is all about, is structured in his approach, and we are positive that his appointment is a step in the right direction,” said Blues’ Director of Football, Darren Caldeira.

Following multiple stints in Georgia and Qatar, Zaragoza was named Assistant Coach to Carles Cuadrat in Bengaluru FC’s title-winning squad of 2018-19. At the end of the season, he took the position of Head Coach at Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai FC’s U21s, eventually going on to manage the First Team. Zaragoza managed Al-Ahli to a quarterfinal finish in the AFC Champions League.

“Gerard is a coach with prior experience in Indian football, and understands the DNA of this football club. He was part of a very successful period in this club’s history, and we believe that having him back will bring a positive change in the dressing room. We look forward to working together and bringing this club back to the top,” said Blues’ Technical Consultant, Albert Roca

Georgios Kougioumtsidis, representing Greece, has been a force to reckon with, especially at the 2023 World Championships. He claimed victory at the U23 Europeans, secured silver at the senior Europeans, and showcased his prowess in Belgrade, earning him the title in Freestyle. His remarkable performance at the Olympic weight of 74kg, including victories over notable athletes like Magomedkhabib Kadimagomedov and Tajmuraz Salkazanov, further solidified his reputation as a future star.

Antim, a sensational talent in women’s wrestling, has had a phenomenal year. The young Indian wrestler made a striking debut at the senior Asian Championships, where she won a silver medal. She defended her U20 world title and bagged a bronze at the World Championships at 53kg. In a remarkable display of skill and composure, she defeated top competitors like Dom Parrish, Roksana Zasina, and Jonna Malmgren. Her achievement in Belgrade was historic, making her the youngest Indian to win a medal at the World Championships. She continued her success by securing a bronze at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Hasrat Jafarov, from Azerbaijan, has emerged as a prodigious talent in Greco-Roman wrestling. At just 20 years old, he has already made significant strides, marked by a silver medal at the World Championships in the 67kg category. Jafarov’s journey to stardom includes his first European title and a gold at the Ranking Series, positioning him as a prime contender for the Paris Olympics. His victories over wrestlers like Kristizan Vancza, Mohammadreza Geraei, and Slavik Galstyan highlight his potential and skill at a young age.

NFL Expands International Reach: São Paulo to Host 2024 Regular Season Game

While the specific date and participating teams have yet to be disclosed, the announcement, made on Wednesday, highlights the NFL’s ongoing strategy to globalize American football. São Paulo, a bustling metropolis and the commercial heart of Brazil, edged out Madrid, Spain, for the 2024 game. However, NFL’s Executive Vice President Peter O’Reilly indicated that Madrid remains a strong contender for hosting a game as early as 2025.

DALLAS – In a landmark decision, the National Football League (NFL) has announced its intention to stage a regular season game in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2024. This marks the first time the league will venture into South America for a regular season game, expanding its already global footprint.

O’Reilly expressed excitement about the NFL’s expansion into new territories. “The good news is both São Paulo and Madrid are really viable and interested in hosting games,” he remarked during his interview with NFL.com.

In a significant development, NFL owners have approved a resolution mandating each team to play an international game every four years. This policy could potentially lead to as many as eight international games starting in the 2025 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars continue their separate agreement to play at London’s Wembley Stadium, an arrangement not included in the overall count of international games.

The São Paulo game is likely to occupy one of the NFL’s prime-time slots or be featured in a 4:25 p.m. ET doubleheader. The time zone difference between São Paulo and the Eastern United States, varying between one and two hours, rules out the possibility of a 9:30 a.m. ET slot, unlike the games in Europe. The league is keen to explore morning game windows, following the success of Premier League soccer broadcasts in the U.S., to further appeal to Asian and Australian audiences.

Brazil’s inclusion in the NFL’s itinerary is not surprising, given the country’s burgeoning fan base. The NFL boasts 38 million fans in Brazil, bolstered by extensive local engagement through Super Bowl watch parties and free-to-air broadcasts of playoffs and Super Bowl games. São Paulo, in particular, offers an ideal venue with Corinthians Arena, a 49,000-capacity stadium, which has hosted significant events like the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics soccer matches.

The NFL’s international expansion does not stop at Brazil and potentially Madrid. Plans are underway to resume games in Mexico City once stadium renovations are completed and to explore new venues in countries like France. This global push aligns with the NFL’s strategic vision for growth, overcoming initial hesitations among team owners about losing home games. The successful reception of games in Tottenham and Germany, coupled with the marketing rights assigned to international markets, underscores the league’s commitment to a broader, more diverse audience.

The NFL’s move to a 17-game regular season has facilitated this global expansion, proving to be a catalyst for the league’s ambitious international agenda. As the NFL ventures into South America for the first time with its regular season, it marks a new chapter in the league’s international narrative, promising to bring the excitement of American football to new corners of the globe.

IOC President leads sports world in support of displaced people at Global Refugee Forum

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach today announced the Joint Sport Pledge on behalf of the Sport for Refugees Coalition at the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, addressing heads of state, ambassadors, refugees and the wider humanitarian sector. The pledge commits USD 45 million to benefit 500,000 displaced people.

President Bach, who also chairs the IOC’s Olympic Refuge Foundation, presented the Joint Sport Pledge on behalf of more than 100 organisations, including over 40 National Olympic Committees and International Federations, as well as governments, refugee-led organisations, UN agencies, civil society organisations, private sector representatives and beyond.

Speaking at the event, the IOC President said: “Sport is about so much more than physical activity. Sport is empowerment. Sport is health. Sport is inclusion. Sport is respect. Sport is solidarity. Sport is belonging. Sport is peace.

“This is what brings our Coalition together: a belief in the power of sport as a force for good in the world. With far too many wars and conflicts displacing millions of people on a scale we have never seen before, this power of sport has never been more important. Sport is a low-cost, high-impact tool, especially for displaced young people, to find belonging; to empower them; to rebuild their lives and to shape their own future.”

He added: “The message of our pledge is clear: sport is supporting displaced people around the world. Above all else, this is a team effort. Everyone can and must play their part. It has never been more urgent to include sport in Refugee Response Frameworks, in budgets for National Action Plans and in your long-term development strategies. This is why, today, I am extending the hand of the Sport for Refugees Coalition to all of you. Let us join hands and work together for, and with refugees.”

President Bach’s appearance before the Forum was followed by him introducing the parallel high-level event “Breaking Barriers: Realising the Potential of Sport for Inclusion and Protection”, where the Paris 2024 Refugee Olympic Team Chef de Mission, Masomah Ali Zada, and Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Refugee Olympic Team swimmer Yusra Mardini both made contributions.

The event took a deeper dive into the work of the entities involved and was co-hosted by the Government of Colombia and the co-convenors of the Sport for Refugees Coalition: the Olympic Refuge Foundation, the Scort Foundation and UNHCR. The attending audience also heard from representatives of the governments of France, Zimbabwe and Colombia, as well as more than 20 other committing organisations.

The IOC President also took the opportunity to outline the IOC’s and Olympic Refuge Foundation’s specific commitments, which include investing USD 15 million to:

  • Support refugee athletes and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, which will for the first time be led by a refugee as its Chef de Mission at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
  • Strengthen positive media narratives around refugees through the global visibility of the Olympic Games, which reach an audience of billions.
  • Promote the mental health and psychosocial well-being of young refugees through sport.
  • Advocate broad support for refugees by building multistakeholder coalitions.

The high-level parallel event was closed by Gillian Triggs, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR, who said: “I would like to take a minute to remind us why in particular we’re here, which is the Global Refugee Forum, built on the principles of the Global Compact on Refugees – quite a revolutionary document approved in 2018 by the General Assembly. And what it does is to take two very simple ideas. One is that the responsibility for refugees and displaced people lies with all of us.

“But the other is that this responsibility is shared; it is shared by the whole of society. Those are the aspirations, and it’s quite clear that each of you fully understand that sport is one of the most powerful tools to ensure that level of inclusion.”

Pledging to ensure refugees thrive, through sport

TheMultistakeholder Pledge on Sport for Inclusion and Protection of Refugees (“Sport Pledge”) outlines the role that sport can play in improving the lives of refugees, including through sports programming, policy change, skills development, and communication and advocacy efforts. The pledge was developed by a dedicated multistakeholder group working on and through sport, and guided by the co-convenors of the Sport for Refugees Coalition.

The commitments made as part of the pledge are as diverse as the pledging entities, and include financial, technical and material support, as well as policy commitments and those that create opportunities for resettlement and complementary pathways.

Through the pledge, entities commit to mobilising resources, expertise and networks to promote access to and opportunities through sport for, and with, displaced people and their host communities, contributing to more inclusive and cohesive societies.

Dallas Cowboys Crowned Most Valuable NFL Brand, Surging to $16.7 Billion Valuation

Dallas, Texas: The Dallas Cowboys have once again clinched the title of the most valuable NFL brand, with an astounding brand value of $2.3 billion. This impressive figure not only cements their position at the top of the NFL but also places them as the most valuable sports brand globally, surpassing renowned soccer club Manchester City FC.

Unprecedented Valuation in the Sports World

The Cowboys’ enterprise value has seen a remarkable surge this year, setting a new benchmark in sports franchise valuations. With the Washington Commanders’ recent transaction valued at $6.05 billion, the Dallas Cowboys’ business is now estimated at a staggering $16.7 billion. This valuation reflects the strong business model of NFL franchises, characterized by assured revenue, profitability, and reduced risk, further amplified by the Cowboys’ commercial power.

Brand Strength: The Key to Success

The Cowboys’ brand strength, with a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 82.9, is a critical factor in their valuation. Their 91-acre campus, ‘The Star,’ is more than just a headquarters; it’s a symbol of their success and a hub for corporate and community engagement. Housing the global headquarters of Dr Pepper, The Star plays a significant role in strengthening corporate ties and enhancing the team’s brand strength.

Hugo Hensley, Head of Sports Services at Brand Finance, emphasized the Cowboys’ exceptional off-field performance. “Despite a Super Bowl drought, the Cowboys excel in building a strong brand, attracting fans, and securing sponsorships under Jerry Jones’ leadership,” Hensley noted.

Los Angeles Chargers: A Remarkable Ascent

The Los Angeles Chargers have made a significant leap in the brand value rankings, now positioned at number 6 following a 45% increase to $921 million. The Chargers’ relocation to Los Angeles and their shared residency at SoFi Stadium have propelled their business to new heights, overcoming initial fan controversies.

Kansas City Chiefs: Gaining Strength from Super Bowl Victory

The Kansas City Chiefs, having triumphed in the 2023 Super Bowl, have seen a substantial boost in their brand strength, now ranking as the second strongest NFL brand. This victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, coupled with increased media attention around player Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, has elevated their brand visibility and merchandise sales.

Alfred DuPuy, Valuation & Strategy Director at Brand Finance North America, highlighted the Chiefs’ rising brand strength. “The Chiefs are gaining recognition not just for their on-field achievements but also for their growing influence off the field, including Kelce’s rising social media presence and merchandise sales,” DuPuy remarked.

Conclusion

The Dallas Cowboys’ position as the most valuable NFL brand reflects a blend of strategic branding, robust business performance, and effective community engagement. As the NFL continues to grow, these key elements will remain crucial in shaping the future of sports franchise valuations and brand strength.

PKL 10: Bengaluru Bulls end home leg with close win over Jaipur Pink Panthers

BENGALURU, 13th December, 2023: The Bengaluru Bulls took a well deserved, and hard-fought 32-30 win against the Jaipur Pink Panthers in the final game of the second leg at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday. An outstanding defensive performance saw the Bulls log an incredible 13 tackle points — eight of which came from defensive corners Saurabh Nandal and Aman.

Despite the Bulls’ quick start on the mat, the Pink Panthers’ defensive nous came to the fore as they slowly chipped away on the scoreboard. Despite a lack of any multi-point raids, the Bulls were soon facing an all out. Bharat’s 50th raid point of the season came at the cost of an ALL-OUT as the Pink Panthers surged into a 10-6 lead.

That setback did little to dim the hopes of the home team, though, who slowly came back into the game. The Bulls tightened their raiding and defending moves to put the Pink Panthers on the back foot. The teams went into the break with the Pink Panthers leading by one point at 15-14.

Again, the Pink Panthers came faster out of the blocks in the second half, establishing a good lead, but the Bulls struck back soon enough. They inflicted an ALL OUT of their own to draw level at 21 apiece. The difference was a tightening of the defence. The Bulls logged an outstanding 8 tackle points, six more than their opponents in the second half alone.

A battle of attrition ensued, with neither team managing to establish a lead of more than a point till the final minute of the game. Vikash Kandola went in for the Bulls’ final raid when they had finally established a two-point lead. Almost immediately, though the Pink Panthers pounced, Ankush tackling him to cut the lead to one with just one raid remaining. V Ajith Kumar was handed the responsibility to help the Pink Panthers at the very least tie the game, but he was brilliantly out-maneuvered by a resolute Bulls defence to spark delirium in the stands.

ISL: Chennaiyin FC breezes past Bengaluru FC powered by penalties in both halves

Chennaiyin FC beat Bengaluru FC by 2-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium to record a much-needed victory after a streak of three draws in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24.

Owen Coyle has a fond liking for Brazilian playmaker Rafael Crivellaro, and for a good reason. The 34-year-old is the architect of everything that the Marina Machans do right up front, from establishing offensive moves to chipping in with timely strikes.

Tonight, it was all Crivellaro as Chennaiyin FC completed a convincing victory against the Blues, who had parted ways with head coach Simon Grayson after their 4-0 loss at home last Friday. Former India international Renedy Singh was on the touchline as the interim at helm for the 2018-19 ISL champions, but a change at the top didn’t result in a change in the results, as the club would have hoped for after Grayson’s departure.

It started with Namgyl Bhutia handling the ball inside the 18-yard box in the sixth minute, and up stepped Crivellaro to take the spot-kick. The attacking midfielder hammered the ball to the top left corner, leaving Gurpreet Singh Sandhu little chance to keep the scores level.

However, Sandhu put up a show thereafter, making a host of saves including three important ones to deny the trio of Crivellaro, Jordan Murray, and Vincy Barretto any further strikes in the first half. In the 11th minute, the goalkeeper dived to thwart Crivellaro’s attempt, and he repeated those heroics in the 30th and 37th minutes respectively to take care of the shots taken by Murray and Barretto respectively.

Murray was operating wonderfully in tandem with Crivellaro, with his shot that nearly doubled the lead being set up by the latter. The duo did hit back in the 50th minute though, and this time Gurpreet couldn’t be the saviour for the visitors given that Murray got a chance to add to his goal-scoring tally by striking from the 12-yard box.

Crivellaro eased his way through the centre of the Bengaluru FC penalty box, and displayed some crafty trickery with his feet to earn a foul committed by Harsh Patre. This time, he let Murray do the honours, who didn’t miss the opportunity and sealed the game and secured those crucial three points for Coyle’s side.

Key Performer of the Match

Rafael Crivellaro (Chennaiyin FC)

Crivellaro scored the opener, earned the penalty for the second one, and he capped off the game with a 74% passing accuracy, making two crosses, and creating a couple of goal-scoring chances. He symbolised everything that Coyle stands for, dropping back to pitch in defensively whenever required, in addition to making the most of the openings that came in the way of the home side to help them catch hold of a critical victory against a struggling Bengaluru FC unit.

What’s next for both teams?

Chennaiyin FC will square off against Punjab FC on December 18, whereas Bengaluru FC will take on Jamshedpur FC on December 16.

Brief Scores

Chennaiyin FC 2 (Rafael Crivellaro 6’, Jordan Murray 50’) – 0 Bengaluru FC

From this shortlist, the three finalists have been selected by an international jury comprising: men’s national team coaches, men’s national team captains, football journalists, and fans who voted on FIFA’s official website.

The winners of both awards will be revealed at a London ceremony on Monday 15 January 2024. Next month’s ceremony will mark the third time that FIFA has held The Best FIFA Football Awards in London, after the 2017 and 2018 award ceremonies were staged in the city.

How were The Best FIFA Women’s Coach Award and The Best Men’s Coach Award finalists determined?

  • From the five-coach shortlists, each voter made their first, second and third choices for the prize.
  • Points were given to nominees depending on where they were placed (five points for first, three for second and one for third).
  • Nominated national team coaches could not vote for themselves.
  • Selections from the four voting groups – coaches, captains, journalists, and fans – each counted for 25 per cent of the total vote, irrespective of the number of voters from each group.
  • The Best FIFA Women’s Coach Award and The Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award will be presented to the individual with the most points.
  • If finalists are tied on points, the award will be bestowed on the individual who has received the most first-choice selections.

The voting procedure for The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award is supervised by independent observers and are detailed in the Rules of Allocation.

Results will be published in full on FIFA.com following the awards ceremony on 15 January 2024.

Leander Paes, Vijay Amritraj, and Richard Evans Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame

The International Tennis Hall of Fame has announced the induction of former doubles world No. 1 Leander Paes, broadcaster and promoter Vijay Amritraj, and renowned journalist and writer Richard Evans into its illustrious ranks, marking a historic moment for Indian tennis and global sports journalism. The Class of 2024, set to be officially inducted on July 20, 2024, in Newport, Rhode Island, includes these distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport of tennis.

Leander Paes: A Doubles Legend

Leander Paes, an 18-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles, has been selected in the Player Category. His three-decade-long career has been marked by remarkable achievements, including topping the world rankings in doubles, winning eight doubles Grand Slam titles, and 10 in mixed doubles. Paes holds the distinction of being one of only three men in tennis history to capture a career Grand Slam in both disciplines. He shares the record for the most mixed doubles major titles with Hall of Famer Martina Navratilova and has achieved a career Grand Slam alongside Martina Hingis in mixed doubles. His contribution to Indian tennis is monumental, having represented the country in international competitions for 30 years, winning a record 45 Davis Cup doubles rubbers, and earning a bronze medal in singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

“It has been my life’s honor to play for my country for over three decades in a sport that has given and taught me everything. This acknowledgment is indeed the ultimate accolade for every tennis player. Induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame belongs not just to me, but to our billion-plus Indians. Receiving this honor culminates a professional journey of a lifetime, standing on the shoulders of greats and sets the tone for other youngsters in Asia and around the world.”

-Leander Paes, Class of 2024 Inductee

Vijay Amritraj: Promoter and Humanitarian

Vijay Amritraj, a trailblazing figure in Indian tennis, has been recognized in the Contributor Category for his extensive contributions to the sport and humanitarian causes. As a player, Amritraj was instrumental in leading India to two Davis Cup Finals and was a key advocate against Apartheid in 1974. Post-retirement, he became a prominent tennis broadcaster in Asia and the Middle East and played a vital role in expanding professional tennis in India. His humanitarian efforts, including serving as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and establishing the Vijay Amritraj Foundation, have had a far-reaching impact.

“This is truly a blessing, and an honor to be included in the history of tennis, among the greats who have played and served the sport. Acknowledging the culmination of a career that started with illness and now to be inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, is making impossible dreams come true. It is a gift from above for me and my family and an honor for India.”

-Vijay Amritraj, Class of 2024 Inductee

Richard Evans: A Voice in Tennis Journalism

Richard Evans, with a career spanning over six decades, has become an authoritative voice in tennis journalism. Covering over 200 Grand Slams and numerous other tournaments since Wimbledon in 1960, Evans has authored 23 books, offering invaluable insights into the sport’s history and growth. His contributions as a founding member of the International Tennis Writers’ Association and his role in the early development of the ATP Tour underscore his influence on the sport.

“Being recognized as having done something useful by one’s peers is always a great honor. It has also been such a pleasure to have spent a large part of my career writing about such a fabulous sport alongside players and fellow journalists whose talent I have admired.”

-Richard Evans, Class of 2024 Inductee

The induction of these three legends into the International Tennis Hall of Fame is a testament to their respective groundbreaking impacts on tennis. As the first Indians to receive this Ultimate Honor and the first Asian men elected in their categories, Paes and Amritraj have set a benchmark for future generations. Richard Evans’ recognition celebrates the critical role of journalism in shaping the narrative of sports history. The tennis community looks forward to celebrating their achievements during the induction ceremony in 2024, as they join an elite group of 264 inductees from 27 nations, with India becoming the 28th nation represented in the Hall of Fame.

As Kim Clijsters, Honorary President of ITHF and Class of 2017 Hall of Famer, eloquently put it, “These three legends have served as trailblazers in their impact on tennis, and in spreading the sport worldwide.”
