New Delhi, 28th November 2023: Para Badminton star Pramod Bhagat lauded the efforts of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to host the first-ever Khelo India Para Games and believes that this initiative will boost India’s medal tally in major multi-discipline events such as the Olympics and Asian Games.
Bhagat currently is ranked world no.2 in para badminton men’s singles SL3, and won a gold medal at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. At the recent Hangzhou Asian Para Games, Bhagat clinched a gold in men’s singles, a bronze each in men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Bhagat said, “After the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met with us (para athletes) just like he met with the able-bodied athletes. When he spoke with us, he had expressed that all sports are equal and I feel like we a reaping results because of this thought of the Prime Minister to provide equal opportunity to us.”
“After that meeting with the PM, we all hoped that a Khelo India Games will be held for para athletes too and I am very happy and excited that the first-ever Khelo India Para Games is set to begin in New Delhi this December. I certainly feel that Khelo India Para Games will further boost the para sports eco system in the country, help identify a larger talent pool and it will help increase the medal tally in upcoming Paralympics and Asian Para Games,” added Bhagat.
Bhagat further stated that, the Khelo India initiative has aided in developing a strong state-wise sports eco system with state governments promoting all disciplines in order to perform well in these annual Khelo India Games. Now with the inaugural edition of Khelo India Para Games, one can witness similar efforts by state governments to promote para sports. He said, “I believe this initiative will give a new future for para athletes. Earlier, para sports was mostly a national-level initiative but now under the Khelo India flagship, all states will also establish a strong system to promote para sports.”
Since 2018, a total of 11 Khelo India Games have been successfully held. This includes 5 Khelo India Youth Games, 3 Khelo India University Games and 3 Khelo India Winter Games. The first-ever Khelo India Para Games is scheduled to be held from 10th December to 17th December 2023.
“I am very sure this platform will be well-utilised by para athletes. The Khelo India Para Games will definitely help in identifying many more talented para athletes and support them with TOPS scheme. In the recent Asian Para Games we finished 5th in the overall medal tally with 111 medal and I can vouch that the initiatives taken by the government will help us reach top 3 in the next Asian Para Games,” Bhagat asserted.
Over 1400 participants from across 32 states and union territories including Services Sports Control Board are expected to participate in the maiden Khelo India Para Games which will witness para athletes vie for honours in 7 disciplines including para athletics, para shooting, para archery, para football, para badminton, para table tennis and para weight lifting. New Delhi, November 28,2023 : Six time Asian Championships medalist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) and 2019 World Championships silver medalist Amit Panghal (51kg) started their campaign on a winning note on day three at the 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships in Shillong.
Representing Assam, Shiva started off in a dominating fashion against Abhinash Jamwal but as the bout progressed, the boxer from Himachal Pradesh made a remarkable comeback and made Shiva work for each point impressing the referees. The bout was closely contested throughout but the highly experienced Shiva maintained his composure in the crucial moments of the game to get past his opponent in a 4-3 split decision win. He will now face Santhosh HK of Karnataka in the round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
Amit, who is playing for SSCB was up against Maharashtra’s Shivaji, was looking as determined as ever. The 28 year old did not hesitate to throw punches as his opponent looked clueless giving the southpaw ample opportunity to experiment with his moves. Amit finished the bout with an easy 5-0 unanimous decision win. He will now be up against Punjab’s Jayshandeep Singh on Tuesday in the round of 16 clash.
Tokyo Olympian Ashish Kumar (80kg) of Himachal Pradesh got the better of his opponent Arshdeep Singh of Punjab. Ashish was at the top of his game and dominated the proceedings to grab the win with a unanimous decision. He will take on Chandigarh’s Nitish Kumar in the round of 16 clash on Tuesday
Asian Championship 2022 bronze medalist Govind Sahani (48kg) who is playing for RSPB (Railway Sports Promotion Board) proved too good for Sayan Lodh of Tripura. Sharath and Manav’s return bolsters organisers
Vijayawada, November 28: There may be a marginal drop in entries for the fourth UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships, beginning tomorrow at the Ramakotaiah Indoor Stadium, if compared with the last two events. But what makes the tournament more vibrant is the return of the stalwarts A. Sharath Kamal and G. Sathiyan together with Manav Thakkar.
The first and last named skipped the Vadodara tournament. However, their entries in the men’s singles here would bolster the organisers, who are organising the championships after five years, the rest of the field and the spectators. The Andhra Pradesh Table Tennis Association conducted a ranking event in 2018.
Of the 1788 entries, men top the field with 208. The women (158), U-19 Boys (139) and Girls (120) follow the men in that order.
Be that as it may, the competition department has its task cut out when it processes the seeding. With the considerable drop in world and national rankings, Sharath could come in the 5-8 bracket, while Sathiyan still could be at No. 2 and would follow Manav Vikas. The Surat man has the backing of both world and national rankings to stay at the top of the seeding list. There would be a tiebreak for the third position between Manush Shah from RBI and SFR Snehit from the neighbouring Telangana, as the two are equal on points.
There would be no such problems in the women’s singles. Reigning national champion Sreeja Akula from the RBI would occupy the top-seed slot, pushing Archana Kamath to the second, followed by Ayhika and Sutirtha Mukerjees. For the records, the Hyderabadi is the only second Indian in the below 100 world rankings, and that has cemented his position in the seeding list. Archana played the best game at Vadodara in many months and deservingly won the title. The PSPB paddler would want to consolidate her position for a place in Team India, as would others, with the Worlds in February and Olympic qualifications around the corner next year.
There will be some respite for all of these title aspirants as their spoilsport, Diya Chitale, in several events in recent times, has pulled out owing to a sprained ankle. She will take a couple of weeks to recover and be in action to pose a threat to them.
The qualification events for Youth Boys Under-19 will also run concurrently. But those in the fray will miss the creamy layer in either section, who are on national duty at the World Youth Championships in Slovenia. The women’s squad has already accomplished a feat, claiming the bronze for the first time.
P. Vishwanatha Rao, Secretary of APTTA, said that STAG equipment, including flooring, tables and balls, will be used for the seven-day tournament. He said a formal inauguration of the championships will be at 4 p.m.
N. Ganeshan, the competition manager, said that Mangesh Mopkar will continue as referee for the events, with Krishna Kumar and Ramana Kumar will be his deputies. They will have the services of 50 other technical officials, including Blue Badge, International and National umpires.

Syndrela completes a double, Sahil wins his first
Vadodara, November 26: Sahil Rawat of the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board Academy (PSPBA) toyed with Rajdip Sen of the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE), Kolkata, in a 3-0 triumph in the Youth Boys Under-15 final in the third UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships at the Sama Indoor Stadium here today.
Rajdip, who played a tough semifinal, suddenly found himself out of tune, particularly after the first game of the final. Not only did he miss his rhythm, but keeping the ball on the table was also a problem. That is when Sahil upped the ante and went for the kill in the next and the next to wrap it up in double quick time for his first title of the season.
In the Girls final, Syndrela Das came from a game down at 1-2 to beat M. Hansini of Tamil Nadu 3-2. But the latter who began well failed to finish well. Hansini should have won the extended second game, but Syndrela outwitted her. Yet, the TN girl went 2-1 up only to go defensive in the next when the West Bengal paddler switched her on to an offensive mode. Unable to come to terms with it, Hansini lost two consecutive games and the match. It gave Syndrela her second title in the tournament.
Rajdip dropped a game against Soham Mukherjee of West Bengal to win 3-1, while Sahil Rawat of PSPBA thrashed Ronald Sarkar, also from the same academy, 3-0. Both matches failed to arouse much interest as the boy from the NCOE played superbly to beat the West Bengal boy. Soham did take the second game, but that was all he could do. On the other hand, Sahil downed Ronald in straight games but got stretched in the second game.
Syndrela Das was on her way to the second crown as she entered the U-15 Girls final after beating Divyanshi Bhowmick of Maharashtra 3-1. Syndrela, who won the U-17 title yesterday, continued with the form she began the tournament with and subdued her Maharashtra rival despite losing the second game. The West Bengal girl beat Ananya Muralidharan 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
In the other semifinal, M. Hansini of Tamil Nadu made amends for her early loss in the U-17 section, registering an easy 3-0 win over Ikshika Umate from Maharashtra. Hansini accounted for Delhi’s Dhaani Jain in straight games in the quarterfinals.
Kataria loses in R-32
Arya Kataria was the lone paddler from Gujarat who entered the round of 32 when he beat Akansh Sahoo of Maharashtra 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-9). Three others from the state, Sujal Kukadia, Abhilaksh Patel and Malav Panchal, fell in the first round of the main draw.
In the first round, Nikhil Menon of Tamil Nadu defeated Malv 10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-13. Dhanaya Thakur of PSPB Acadey defeated Abhilakh Patel 3-2 (11-4, 13-11, 9-1, 9-11, 12-10 in another grim battle. Souren Somen of Maharashtra downed Sujal Kukadia in straight games of 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.
But Arya, who ousted Akansh, could not repeat the form against Rupam Sardar of Maharashtra, who won 12-10, 11-7, 11-7.
Results:
Youth Boys U-15 Singles: Final: Sahil Rawat (PSPBA) bt Rajdip Sen (NCOE) 11-9, 11-2, 11-5.

He said, “We had a disappointing season earlier this year where we didn’t truly execute as we should have, but given our performances as Runners Up in IPL 2022 where we were so close, we know that the squad we have is capable of bouncing back in our pursuit of competing for the title again. We are excited to be retaining a strong core of players who we believe have the ability to win matches for the team. As a high performance outfit, our goal is to keep refining across various aspects and we have been able to identify the areas where we need to improve considering the different combinations required to win matches during the course of an IPL season.”
“On the other hand, every year, this is also a difficult time as you have to let go of some of the players who have contributed immensely to the team and its environment. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for everything they’ve done for the Royals, and wish them the very best for what’s to come,” the Sri Lankan legend added.

Rashmikaa grabs maiden ITF title at Bowring Institute ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour
Bengaluru, Nov 26: Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty graduated from being a National champion to an international champion when she annexed her maiden ITF title with the Bowring Institute ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour honours defeating Zeel Desai. In a pulsating final attended by a full house crowd at the Bowring Institute courts here on Sunday, Rashmikaa dropped a set before emerging a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 winner.
Rashmikaa took home the winner’s cheque of US $ 3935 but more importantly pocketed 50 WTA points which could help her surge in the WTA rankings. Zeel won US $ 2107 and 30 WTA points for her bridesmaid finish.
“It is still not sunk in. Probably it will by the evening,” said the champion. “I knew Zeel is a good player and I was prepared for a 3-setter. But after having lost the second set, I thought I already had a trophy but by giving it all, I could win the trophy and that is what I did,” said Rashmikaa.
Rashmikaa took advantage of an error-prone Zeel to achieve an early break in the second game itself which set the tone for the rest of the match to follow. The 21-year-old held her serve in the third game after a series of deuces, which deterred her opponent from making any comeback. Without giving a semblance of a chance, she grabbed the set 6-0.
However, Zeel, who had comeback after staring at defeat in the semifinals yesterday, showed similar traits when she broke her opponent’s serve in the very first game. However, she was broken back in the fourth game as lead changed hands after the fifth game where Rashmikaa led 3-2. Zeel once again came back into the set winning three games on the trot to go 5-3 up before winning the set 6-4.
With the winds playing a crucial role, especially when the players were serving, especially for Zeel who found it tough to control the ball and found her herself 0-3 down. Rashmikaa using her strong forehand to good use and played some brilliant cross court shots which Zeel didn’t have any answer.

Chennaiyin FC play out 1-1 draw with East Bengal FC
Chennai, November 25, 2023: Ninthoinganba Meetei netted an equaliser late into the second half as Chennaiyin FC played out a 1-1 draw with East Bengal FC in the 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.
East Bengal took the lead in the first half against the run of play through an own goal by midfielder Ayush Adhikari in the 29th minute. Meetei scored the only goal for the home side in the 86th minute of an exciting contest.
The Marina Machans found their feet in the game early on as a long-range attempt of Adhikari from outside the box was saved by the away team in the seventh minute. Jordan Murray soon found himself in the mix of the action and hit a right-footed shot from the centre of the box that went high over the bar.
In the 29th minute, East Bengal orchestrated a decisive play that bore fruit when Vishnu Valappill’s precise cross was inadvertently directed into the net by Adhikari, resulting in an own goal. However, the Owen Coyle men kept their attacking game intact in search of a goal.
Murray came close to scoring the equaliser before goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill saved his left-footed volley from the left side of the post.
The second half also saw Chennaiyin pushing for their first goal and they almost scored when Meetei took a shot from outside the box in the 59th minute. East Bengal’s resolute defence blocked the shot and then neutralised an attempt by Ankit Mukherjee from the left side of the six-yard box.
Goalkeeper Debjit Majumder kept the home team in the match with a fine save in the 72nd minute on the shot of India international Mandar Rao Dessai. Chennaiyin netted the equaliser when Rafael Crivellaro found Meetei on the right flank in the 86th minute and the youngster made no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net.

Balamurugan completes a hat-trick of titles
Vadodara, November 25: M.R. Balamurugan of Tamil Nadu completed a hat-trick of title wins in the Youth Boys Under-17 when he blanked out Kushal Chopda of Maharashtra in in the third UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships at the Sama Indoor Stadium here today.
Syndrela Das of West Bengal, making most of the early exits of top two seeds, defeated state mate Saanvy Roy 3-1 to lift her maiden Youth Girls U-17 title. Both winners laughed their way to the bank with the winner’s cheque of Rs. 24000 each. The runners-up in both sections received half the amount in prize money.
After his fine showing in the semifinal, one expected Kushal to put up some resistance. Though it came in the second game, he missed two game points, allowing Balamurugan to go 2-0 up. The third game was a mere formality for the lanky Tamil Nadu player, who accomplished the task without a fuss.
Syndrela was too good for Saanvy. Though the latter managed a game off her, Sannvy was hardly in the match as Syndrela relentlessly attacked, shattering the confidence of her statemate. In the semifinals, Balamurugan Muthu Rajasekaran and Kushal Chopda spent torrid moments at the table before overcoming Priyanuj Bhattacharyya and Punit Biswas, respectively. The Tamil Nadu and the Maharashtra paddlers identically won 3-2 to enter the final.
Top seed Rajasekaran was in trouble as the fourth seed Priyanuj from Assam started on a bright note to win the first game. But the Tamil Nadu boy fought back resolutely to go 2-1 up. Yet, he failed to sustain the onslaught of the boy from Assam as the latter levelled the score. In the decider, the TN player turned the table to outwit his rival as he ran up a sizeable lead that would see him through. Unable to cope with the pressure, Priyanuj made unforced mistakes, which hastened his downfall.
The match between third seed Kushal Chopda and second seed Punit Biswas was nicely poised when Punit restored parity (2-2). At that point, it was difficult to say who would be the eventual winner, as Maharashtra and the AAI players had it in them to topple one another on a given day.
In a match, which went down to the wire, the Maharashtra boy played cautiously but cleverly forced Punit into committing himself early and scoring his points. Kushal worked his way up quietly against an impatient Punit and kept asking questions which elicited no answers.
In the first semifinal between Saanvi Roy from West Bengal and Diya Bramhachary of Delhi earlier, the latter was on the verge of closing out Saanvy when she led 2-0. Nobody would have expected the Delhi girl to go into a shell, letting the West Bengal paddler sneak through a narrow opening after winning the third game.
As if on cue, the eighth seed from Bengal clinically did that and levelled the score in the next. From there, she never looked back as she pounced on the opportunity provided by the fourth seed to seal her place in the final, especially after the top two seeds, Kavya Bhatt from Maharashtra and Avani Tripathi from UP, exited in the second round. Third seed Syndrela Das cemented her place in the final with an easy win over Vanshika Mudgal of Delhi.
The two Delhi girls had to be content with the bronze medals.

Bengaluru, Nov 25: Zeel Desai truly showed her zeal to come back from the brink of defeat after being a match point down against Rutuja Bhosale to set up an all-Indian final clash against reigning National champion Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty in the Bowring Institute ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour.
In contrasting semifinals played at the Bowring Institute courts here on Saturday, Zeel won a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over third seeded Rutuja while Rahsmikaa stunned second seed Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand 6-2, 6-1.
The Italian-German pair of Diletta Cherubini and Antonia Schmidt came back from a set down and lifted the women’s doubles title beating the fourth seeded duo of Punnin Kovapitukted of Thailand and Anna Ureke 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. The winners took home a cheque of US$ 1437 and 50 WTA points while the runners-up pocketed US$ 719 and 30 WTA points for their effort.
Rutuja who has been battling a viral this week took to the courts against a confident Zeel. Both the players broke each other in the first two games and repeated the sequence in the 5th and 6th games before the Asian Games champion Rutuja won the next three games on the trot to win the first set 6-3.
The second set too began on a similar note but this time Rutuja achieved the break in the fourth game to go 3-1 up both exchanged breaks in the next two game. This is where Zeel stepped up on the gas and took advantage of a tiring Rutuja to win four games in a row with breaks in the 7th and 9th games.
The 27-year-old Rutuja, with her husband and coach egging her on, seemed to take control of the match with some great passing shots and racing to a 3-1 lead with a break in the 2nd game. Serving to stay in the match at 2-5 and down 30-40, Zeel made a remarkable comeback to win the game which changed the momentum of the match. Rutuja, the leaner of the two rivals, was once again serving for the match at 5-3 but committed four double faults coupled with two unforced errors and lost her serve. Zeel pounced on the opportunity and went on win the rest of the games to wrest the set at 7-5 and the match.
In the other semifinal, which was expected to be a tough battle, Rahsmikaa with her strong forehand augmented with a powerful serve made it look easy against her Thai opponent. Rahsmikaa broke her rival’s serve in the 2nd, 4th and 8th while got broken in the 3rd game. Lanlana, who had played flawless tennis through the week crumbled against the Indian while managing to hold her serve just once in the fourth game of the second set to surrender to the lanky Rashmikaa.

Shillong Lajong Overcomes 10-Man TRAU in Thrilling 2-1 Victory, Climbs to Fifth in I-League Standings
SHILLONG: Shillong Lajong FC earned a hard-fought 2-1 win against 10-man TRAU FC in the 2023-24 I-League on November 25, 2023. Playing a majority of the game a man down, TRAU’s loss condemns them further, deeper into the points table; they now stand last in the 13-team league with just one point from six matches.
With nine points from five matches, Shillong Lajong are now placed fifth in the league table.
In a half completely dominated by the hosts, it was TRAU who took the lead, Robinson Singh’s header the first in five games the club had scored in the league this season. The goal came against the run of play but was created out of some brilliant movement and speed of passing by the TRAU midfield. When the ball ended up with Deepak Singh on the right byline, the winger cut one way and another before dropping a pin point cross into the six-yard area for Robinson to slam in.

It had been 525 minutes since TRAU had last scored a goal in the I-League, and within five minutes of that, Lajong struck back. Their goal came via a catastrophe of errors, first, from the TRAU goalkeeper Salam Sanaton Singh who spilt a routine cross straight into the path of Figo Syndai. The forward’s shot on goal was blocked on the goalline by B Sunil, albeit with his hand. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and sent the Services man off. Hardy Cliff Nongbri duly obliged the partisan crowd with a calmly taken spot kick to equalise.
Playing against 10 men, Lajong were not clinical enough, their striker Elhadji Karim Samb guilty of missing a pair of close range chances midway through the half. TRAU meanwhile were happy to defend deep and preserve what they could with the odds stacked against them.

It took Lajong till the 85th minute to finally get the winner, a swift counter launched by Everbrightson Sana freeing up Karim Samb to drive into the box and cut the ball back toward the near post. In an effort to block Hardy Cliff, Thomas Singh put the ball in his own net.
TRAU hit back almost from the kick off, Abraham Okyere rippling the net, only to be found offside. It was the last real bit of drama as Lajong held on for a deserved three points.

Rejuvenated Chennaiyin aim to get back to winning ways after break
Chennai, November 24, 2023: Coming after an international break, Chennaiyin FC will look to get back to winning ways in the 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) when they take on East Bengal FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.
The Marina Machans registered thrilling victories against Hyderabad FC and Punjab FC before losing to FC Goa in their last match and head coach Owen Coyle acknowledged that a break has helped the players to re-energise and prepare well for another game in front of the home crowd.
“Everybody likes to get into a break on a winning result. That never happened but it was important for our lads to spend time with their families, especially after a particular run of games and it allowed some of our players to go home as well. We worked hard after coming from the break to prepare for another match at home and we are really looking forward to it,” commented Coyle during the pre-match press conference on Friday.
He added, “It’s always exciting to play against a big club like East Bengal. We have a fantastic fan base and our fans have been outstanding, so, we want to reward our fans and to do that the team needs to play well and hopefully put a smile on their face.”
East Bengal are coming into the match after three defeats in a row and although the Scotsman admitted that Chennaiyin have a home advantage, playing and scoring goals against Carles Cuadrat’s men would not be an easy task for his team.
“I think in the ISL, it is always going to be very difficult to play against East Bengal. It’s never easy to score goals and that’s the hardest part of football. I hold Carles in high regard as his football ability is fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing him but he knows as I do for the duration of the game, we’ll be doing everything in our power to win the game. He’s an outstanding man and I know how hard he works, so we know it’s going to be a difficult game,” stated Coyle.
Striker Jordan Murray also accompanied the coach and emphasised on the importance of playing as a team to win games in the ISL.
“I picked up a slight injury at the start of the season which was a bit of a setback but my job is to come and make an impact when the opportunity arises. I’ve been working hard and the boys have been great as well, working with the gaffer. For me, it is about putting my head down and working as hard as I can and doing everything for the team whether I am starting or not. I’ve just been happy to have the opportunity to play football,” Murray concluded.
In head-to-head records, Chennaiyin FC are unbeaten against East Bengal in ISL and have won two out of six matches, while four matches have ended in draws.
The match will begin at 5:30 pm IST as the fans can watch the action live on Viacom18 and JioCinema.

Bengaluru, Nov 24: In a boost to the women’s tennis in India, as many as three of them made it to the last four of the on-going ITF Bowring Institute ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour at the Bowring Institute courts here on Friday.
Rutuja Bhosale, seeded third and the top ranked Indian in fray Kazakhstan’s fifth seeded Zhibek Kulambayeva dropped a set but came back strongly to win 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-1. In the semifinals, Rutuja will take on country mate Zeel Desai, who, oozing with confidence after a win over the top seed in the pre-quarterfinals, lost her way after the first set but was back on track when it mattered to quell the challenge of her stablemate Antonia Schmidt of Germany in three sets 3-6, 6-7 (2), 6-4 to enter the semifinals.
The rest of the matches too went with the form with second seeded Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand securing her last four spot with a clinical 6-1, 6-2 win over seventh seed Diletta Cherubini of Italy and set-up a semifinal clash with in-form Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty who took just 76 minutes to quell the challenge of Vaishnavi Adkar with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The 24-year-old Zeel, ranked 938 on the ITF rankings, broke her better-ranked (115) opponent’s serve in the very first game but was immediately broken back. A break in the eighth game gave the German an upperhand and the 22-year-old promptly took the first set 6-3. Zeel, who has two ITF titles under belt this year so far, put up a much better show in the second and committed fewer mistakes. Both who train under the same coach, matched shot for shot and barring on a few occasions where there were long rallies, both came up with good winners. The set was aptly decided via a tie-breaker, where Antonia found herself committing a couple of unforced errors which brought back Zeel into contention.
In the deciding set, the Ahmedabad-born Zeel raced to a 5-1 lead courtesy breaks in the 1st and 3rd games. Zeel who trains at the Boris Becker and Tennis University took it a bit easy, an opportunity which her rival pounced upon to win the next three games and reduces the margin to 4-5. Zeel found her mojo back at the nick of the time and wound of the game, set and match dropping just a point.
Rutuja who is battling a viral admitted that it was with her heart and strong will that she won the match. Harmeet and Archana lift trophies in UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships
Vadodara, November 24: Top seed Harmeet showed his class and why he is the top-ranked Indian in the world when he beat ninth-seed Jeet Chandra in the men’s singles final 4-2 of the third UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships at the Sama Indoor Stadium here today.
Just before that, Archana Kamath lifted her maiden title when she triumphed over Ayhika Mukherjee, the second seed, with a 4-0 verdict.
When Jeet led 2-0, it looked as if the title was sealed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) player. With his reputation at stake, the CWG medallist and world No. 73 launched himself to take the next four games on the trot and lift the trophy. Jeet, who took the first two extended games, was searching for the ball on the table, and Harmeet, with his loads of experience, just rolled him over. Along the way, the senior pro taught him a few lessons about keeping a cool head in an important final.
Eighth seed Archana Kamath redeemed herself with authority in a one-sided women’s singles final. But the first title win was sweeter for the Bengaluru girl, who was almost there but could never win the national ranking crown despite showing a lot of promise since her title at the Cuttack Nationals in 2018.
Full credit to the PSPB paddler, who shed all inhibitions and self-doubts of recent times to beat the in-form RBI player, who won the first national ranking crown in Hyderabad in June. It was a patchy start for Ayhika, who tried to pull herself back in the stretched second game. But Archana was on song and never allowed the RBI paddler to come anywhere close, keeping her at a distance to clinch the gold medal. A happy Archana was all smiles as her struggle over a couple of years has borne fruit.
Archana may not have been in the best form, but her gritty character came to the fore in back-to-back matches. After leading 3-0 in the semifinals against Kavyashree Baskar of Tamil Nadu, the former national champion dropped three consecutive games, putting herself in deep trouble. But she raised the level in the decider and won. In the quarterfinal against Sreeja, Archana trailed 0-2 before outsmarting the top seed from RBI to win the last three games.
Second-seeded G. Sathiyan bowed out of the medal reckoning when he fell 4-1 to the guile of ninth-seeded Jeet Chandra in the singles quarterfinals.
It was no different in the women’s singles as Ayhika Mukherjee and Archana Kamath were the only seeds that made it to the final after No. 5 Diya Chitale and No. 3 Sutirtha Mukherjee departed in the quarterfinals.
Sathiyan was playing his first domestic tournament this season, and one expected him to give a good account of himself as the reigning national champion in the quarterfinals. But after the tricky first game, which Jeet won, Sathiyan managed to level the score 1-1. But the AAI player was more accurate in attack and defence and scored quick points to put Sathiyan under pressure.
Top-seeded Sreeja Akula and Diya Chitale went down to Archana and unseeded Kavyashree Baskar, respectively. As though that was not enough, Pritha Vartikar, another unseeded paddler, sent third-seed Sutirtha packing in the quarters.
