Minerva colts invited to play a friendly against Columbia U-17 World Cup team.

After being the only team from the entire country to have been invited to play India U-17 World Cup team in Goa few months ago, Northern powerhouse and India’s largest football Academy Minerva Punjab FC add another feather to their cap as they are invited to play Columbian U-17 World Cup team in a friendly match in Gurgaon on 27th September.

Colombia sealed their entry into the U-17 World Cup in dramatic style with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Paraguay in the last group match of the South American U-17 Championship (Campeonato Sudamericano Sub-17) could be tournament’s dark horses and are no stranger to the FIFA U-17 as they previously made it to the FIFA U-17 World Cup on five occasions, their best finish came in Finland 2003 and Nigeria 2009, when they finished third.

The Los Cafeteros U-17 team have already undergone three training camps ever since sealing qualification, with one of them happening in the seaside city of Barranquilla, where temperatures are closest to what the team will experience in India.

Meanwhile Minerva Punjab FC Owner & CEO Ranjit Bajaj fell short of words to express how fortunate he was to have been getting a chance to test his Academy products against the finest talents of International Football.

Ironically, Columbia are placed in Group A with the likes of United States of America (USA), Two-time champions at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Ghana and Host country India which comprises of 5 Minervan players namely defending strong holds Anwar Ali and Narender Gahlot, Midfield general Jackson Singh and strikers Nongdamba Naorem and Shubhan Sarangi.

A rampant Indian team started the match with some enthralling attacking play as they earned a penalty corner in the 7th minute which was well converted by drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur to give India the lead. The defender extended India’s lead in the 11th minute as she converted another penalty corner to make it 2-0. Captain Rani also got onto the score sheet as she scored a well taken field goal in the 13th minute to make it 3-0 for the visitors at the end of the first quarter.

India started the third quarter with some high intensity play which paid off for them in the 33rd minute as Rani scored her second of the match to make it 4-0. Indian Women’s Hockey Team lose 1-3 to Ladies Den Bosch in third match of Europe Tour

Den Bosch (Netherlands), 14 September, 2017: The Indian Women’s Hockey team lost 1-3 to Ladies Den Bosch team in their third match of the Europe Tour here on Thursday. Goals from Ireen van den Assem (12’, 45’) and Imke Hoek (57’) were enough for the hosts to register the win against the visitors as Indian Defender Navdeep Kaur (47′) was the lone player on target for her team.

The match saw both the teams locking horns mostly in the midfield as the focus was on defence. In the first quarter, India started strongly as they retained possession for the first ten minutes but a counter attack from Ladies Den Bosch saw them earn a penalty stroke in the 12th minute which was well converted by Ireen van den Assem to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw some more action as both sides created opportunities inside the opposition’s half. Indian forward Lalremsiami came close to scoring in the 22nd minute, only to be denied by Den Bosch’s goalkeeper. In the same minute, Indian goalkeeper Savita made a terrific save to keep the score down to 0-1. However, Ladies Den Bosch showed why nine players from their team play for the national team as they added to their goal tally when Ireen van den Assem beat Savita again in the 45th minute to take a 2-0 lead at the end of second quarter.

India brought on goalkeeper Rajani Etimarpu in the third quarter to replace Savita and the former was forced into action straight away as she made a diving save in the 33rd minute. The visitors stepped up their efforts to make a comeback into the match as Captain Rani’s shot was saved by the Dutch goalkeeper in the 36th minute while another good team effort went wide of the goal two minutes later.

India started the fourth quarter swiftly as a brilliant team move saw defender Navdeep Kaur score in the 47th minute to make it 2-1. The visitors earned a penalty corner in the 50th minute but it was met with a diving save from the Den Bosch custodian. India continued to put more pressure on the home side in the fourth quarter as chances went wide. In the 57th minute, the Dutch side pounced on the opportunity to score as they converted a penalty corner through Imke Hoek to make it 3-1 and secure the victory.

India will play the Belgium Junior Men’s team in their fourth and final match of the Europe Tour on September 18, 2017 at 2230 hrs IST.

Positive Sharath confident of a WC berth

Ahmedabad, September 14: A thoroughbred that A. Sharath Kamal is, he was counting on the positives than the negatives soon after he was drawn in group C of ITTF-ATTF 30th Asian Cup on Thursday afternoon.

“Even if I finish second in my group, I am sure of making the semi-final cut,” said the ace paddler, who is seeded ninth here.

That was the confidence and character that spoke volumes of the Indian paddler who is currently ranked No. 47 in the world and on whom the entire country’s focus would for the next three days as one of the biggest continental events gets underway at the TransStadia from tomorrow.

Drawn in a group that has Japanese Jun Mizutani, the No. 2 seed, Korean Lee Sangsu and Chinese Lin Gaoyun, the seventh seed, one would have thought it is a tough ask for the Indian, particularly when he takes on the Korean in his opening match. Yes, Sharath has beaten him on a few occasions before and twice ran him close in recent times.

Understandably, Sharath was not thinking about that as much except admitting that the first match tomorrow would really set the tone for booking next month’s World Cup ticket in Belgium. He has dealt with the Gaoyuan, too, a few times before with an impressive track record. But he did admit in as many worlds that Japanese Mizutani would be a hard nut crack, simply because of the potent service weapons he possesses. “This guy is too good with his a variety of serves,” said Sharath.

However, he knows full well the pressure of playing in front of a crowd but he believes it is also his strength. He recalled the vociferous support he received at Jaipur in 2015. “I can hope to get a good support from the home crowd. I have shaped up well for the big event and have had good practice before coming here,” he said.

If Sharath manages to win his first game against the Korean, he has every chance of finishing the group behind the Japanese and that would, in effect, help the Indian avoid running into the Group A and Group B toppers in the quarter-finals.

The top-three finishers here will earn an automatic berth in the men’s world Cup to be held in October at Liege (Belgium), but more berths will be on offer depending on where the players finish in their ranking when the final list is compiled.

Coming to the other Indian on view, Harmeet Desai, who is turning out here on the regional quota and drawn in group D. He has Thailand’s Padasak Tanviryavechakul, Iran’s Nima Alamian and Abdulaziz Al-Abbad from Saudi Arabia for company. But whoever qualifies from the group will run into the third finishing player from group A and C in a single play-off match that will determine the last two spots of quarter-finalists. They will join two quarter-finalists each from group A and C in the main draw.

As for No. 13 seed Manika Batra, the lone Indian woman gaining a slot through the regional quota, has her task cut out in group D. She has the Thai Suthasini, Qatari Aia Mohamed and Neda Shahsavari of Iran. In fact, all of them are far behind her in ranking and hence seeded behind her. This must give some hope to the former national champion, who is ranked 104 in the world. Manika did really well to win the national ranking title just the previous week at Dharwad and it has done a world of good to her confidene.

But nobody has done as well as Liu Shiwen, a four-time winner of Asian Cup. In addition, the Chinese top seed has won the Women’s World Cup as many times and that makes her favourite for the title. In fact, Liu has a great opportunity to surpass the record of Zhang Yining and qualify directly for the World Cup to be staged in Toronto later this year. The other contenders in fray here would only be fighting out for the remaining two spots.

The Asian Cup groupings:

Men:

Group A: Fan Zhendong (CHN), Koki Niwa (JPN), Chen Chien-An (TPE), Ho Kwan Kit (HKG).

Group B: Wong Chun Ting (HKG), Chuang Chih-Yuan (TPE), Jeong Sanguen (KOR), Noshad Alamiyan (IRI).

Group C: Jun Mizutani (JPN), Lee Sangsu (KOR), Lin Gaoyuan (CHN), A. Sharath Kamal (IND).

Group D: Harmeet Desai (IND), Padasak Tanviriyavechakul (THA), Nima Alamian (IRI), Abdulaziz Al-Abbad (KSA).

Women:

Group A: Zhu Yuling (CHN), Miu Hirano (JPN), Doo Hoi Kem (HKG), Yu Mengyu (SGP).

Group B: Liu Shiwen (CHN), Cheng I-Ching (TPE), Yang Haeun (KOR), Lee Ho Ching (HKG).

Group C: Kasumi Ishikawa (JPN), Feng Tianwei (SGP), Suh Hyowon (KOR), Chen Szu-Yu (TPE).

Group D: Suthasini Sawettabut (THA), Manika Batra (IND), Aia Mohamed (QAT), Neda Shahsavari (IRI).

Airtel Delhi Half Marathon celebrates 10 glorious years in the capital

New Delhi, September 13 2017: Procam International, the pioneers of the distance running movement in India, today announced that the registrations for the world’s most prestigious half marathon scheduled for November 19 is now open. With a total prize money of USD 275,000 this year’s edition is expected to witness over 34,000 participants, pound the wide long stretches of the capital on the third Sunday of November.

When Procam International conceptualised and introduced the Delhi Half Marathon in 2005, little did cynics believe that the people of Delhi would embrace running as a lifestyle and turn up in great numbers to set a new bench mark year on year. Today, the event is not only the biggest sporting event in the city, but also one that has created a legacy of breaking barriers – be it at an individual level or impacting the country as a whole.

In this endeavour, it is a matter of immense pride for all, that the telecom giant, Bharti Airtel has been a visionary sponsor, who has relentlessly backed the event in Delhi, into its tenth successive year.

Ravindra Singh Negi, CEO-Delhi/NCR, Bharti Airtel said,“Airtel began its journey in Delhi and today it is not only Delhi’s but India’s preferred network. As a brand connecting millions, we are both proud and excited to motivate Delhiites to come together and run for their loved city. This year is also special for us as we complete 10 years of our association with India’s most prestigious half marathon.”

AHEAD OF THE CURVE:

Procam International continues to remain the catalyst that continuously re-invents the paradigm of running in India. By providing a platform to achieve one’s own goals and blending elite performance with a sporting extravaganza, ADHM remains at the forefront of social change.

•       GOLD LABEL RACE: ADHM this year has received the merit of a Gold Label Race – a rare distinction from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) classifying the half marathon as one of ‘leading road races around the world’. This new status comes as a jewel in the crown for the country’s most preferred half marathon.

▪               TIMED 10K RUN: Keeping in mind the popularity of the Great Delhi Run and to give a fillip to the emerging runner community, for the first time, there will be a 10K timed run exclusively via charity. This Timed 10K Run is available only for participants above 15 years of age, who want to make a difference by running for charity. The application form for charity running places will be available with the NGOs registered with the Event’s Philanthropy Partner, India Cares. Charity running places will not be available after 13th October 2017 or as soon as running places are filled, whichever is earlier

▪               WOMEN RUNNER CRITERIA in TIMED 10K RUN: For all the women participants, who do not have a timing certificate and are eager to join the running bandwagon, a limited number of seats are also reserved for them via charity.

▪               YOUNG RUNNER CRITERIA in TIMED 10K RUN: To encourage young aspiring runners, within the 10K category, there are a limited number of running places reserved for applicants, between 15 years and less than 18 years of age. The Charity Criteria will not be applicable to this section and these running places will be accepted on first come first served basis via online registration on www.adhm.procamrunning.in.

▪               NEW SPONSORS: To make any sporting event a grand success, it is imperative to have like-minded sponsors on board and this year two new global brands have extended their association with the event. India’s leading mineral water brand Bisleri has come on board as the hydration partner and Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, as the airline partner.

Jayaraj Shanmugam, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways said, “Marathons not only test the spirit of human endurance, but also reflect the power of resilience as well as the strength of faith and self-belief. Jet Airways is proud to associate itself with the 10th edition of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon – one of India’s iconic running events. It is our endeavour to spur our employees and participants to push and go beyond their limits, in the pursuit of excellence.”

“With consumers increasingly realising the importance of active lifestyle, Bisleri would like to emphasise the importance of water for leading a healthy lifestyle. Hydration as a subject is neglected in sports until now in India. Associating with Procam International gives us an ideal platform to connect with the consumers, educate them about the importance of right hydration and let our consumers know that we care for their health. It is important to adopt a correct hydration strategy, especially during endurance runs as not just dehydration, even over hydration is a serious problem and can adversely impact runner’s health and performance.” –Anjana Ghosh, Director, Marketing, Bisleri                                                   International Pvt. Ltd.

▪               PUMA Shoe Collection Initiative : In its pursuit to encourage running and PUMA’s endeavour to give back to the community, PUMA announced a Shoe Collection Initiative in association with Goonj. Under this initiative, starting November, 2017, customers can drop their used shoes at PUMA stores across 12 cities. These can be sports/casual shoes of any brand but should be in a condition such that the recipient can use it.  All the collected shoes will be given to Goonj, a social enterprise focused to work on improving accessibility to basic needs like clothing, education and sanitary pads while changing the dynamics of giving & receiving with dignity. Goonj will further channelize these shoes to rural India and eventually help many others set their feet on the ground in comfort. According to various studies and reports, more than half of rural population in India don’t have access to proper shoes. This initiative from PUMA creates a platform to help in this need.

▪      PUMA Race Day & Finishers Tee: All the half marathon participants will get the exclusive PUMA Race Day Tee, while first 1000 runners will receive PUMA Finishers Tee.

Abhishek Ganguly, MD, PUMA India, said “We are excited to be associated with ADHM for the third time. Running has immense potential in India, and we want to do everything we can to nurture this ecosystem. Associations such as these are in line with our pursuit of encouraging more people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

He further added, “As the leading Sportswear Company in India, it is our responsibility to address the basic need of easy access to quality footwear. Our Shoe Collection initiative with Goonj is a step in this direction which has the ultimate aim of shoes for every foot”

▪               CHAMPIONS with DISABILITY (CWD) & PLANET ABLED: To create a necessary stir for CWD and further engage with the community, this category will be supported by Planet Abled, an NGO that provides accessible travel solutions and leisure excursions for people with different disabilities. With their necessary expertise and manpower, Planet Abled is certain to give the category of participants an enhanced and an unforgettable experience from registrations to race day.

Vivek Singh, Jt. MD, Procam International said, “This edition marks a glorious legacy as we set foot into the 10th edition of Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. As sporting entrepreneurs ,who wanted to get the country lace-up for distance running –, it absolutely warms our heart to witness thousands of individuals embrace running, be it competitive or for fun. ADHM has been at the forefront of change and has transcended beyond the boundaries of sport, into a movement with a social conscience.

“The success of an event of this stature and magnitude is not possible without the faith and support of all stake holders. We extend our deepest gratitude to Airtel for their belief and passion and welcome on-board our new partners Bisleri and Jet Airways,” added Singh.

Important for me to share my experience with the younger hockey players: PR Sreejesh

Bengaluru, 13 September 2017: P.R. Sreejesh, who has been out of action for more than four months with a knee injury that saw him miss the World League Semi-Final in London, is on his way to making a complete recovery as he joins his teammates at SAI Centre, Bengaluru to continue his rehabilitation process.

The 29-year old stopper has been an important figure for the Indian Men’s Hockey team in the recent years as he had led the team to the Silver medal in last year’s Champions Trophy in London. But earlier this year in April 2017, when the team started their season at the 26th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, the goalkeeper from Kerala suffered a ligament injury during the team’s match against defending Champions Australia while diving to reach a diagonal ball by an Australian striker inside the Indian circle. Leading India in the tournament, Sreejesh hobbled off the pitch inside the first quarter and has since been in recovery.

However, the experienced campaigner seemed to be in good spirits as he made his return to SAI Centre, Bengaluruon Wednesday. “It feels good to be back at the National Camp and starting some light training with my teammates. When you are with your team, you get the right motivation to work hard every day and get back to the field quickly as you want to contribute to the team,” Sreejesh said.

Sreejesh has been helping the younger players in the side by sharing his expertise with them in training, something that will benefit the likes of young goalkeeping duo Akash Chikte and Suraj Karkera in the upcoming Hero Asia Cup 2017. He said, “I think it’s important for me to share my experience with the younger players and give them feedback on their performance. That also helps me in improving my game as I can also learn from them too and when I come back on the field, I will know where I need to make improvements.”

“When you are in the team, you need to take the responsibility and not worry about how you are going to perform as an individual. When you are playing in the team, you need to give your 100% and focus on team-play so that the team can perform well as a unit,” the goalkeeper advised the younger players in the National Camp.

Sreejesh is confident that under the stewardship of new Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne, the team will only improve. He said, “With a new coach in place now, this team will take a new direction. While moving up the ranks and maintaining consistency remains constant, I am sure along with me, all the players in the camp are looking forward to continue the hard work and aim for better results with Chief Coach Marijne.”

Indian Women’s Hockey Team play out a 2-2 draw against Belgium Junior Men’s Team

Antwerp (Belgium), 12 September, 2017: The Indian Women’s Hockey team held on to a 2-2 draw against the Belgium Junior Men’s Team in a closely fought match here on Monday.

India, led by Captain Rani, started the match on a positive note earning a penalty corner within 40 seconds of the start but could not convert it. Two minutes later, another PC was saved by the Belgian goalkeeper.

However, it was the young Belgium team who got three PCs in a span of six minutes, but goalkeeper Savita did well to keep the home side from taking an early lead. Forward Vandana Katariya created a beautiful chance for India inside the striking circle but could not score as the first quarter ended goalless.

The second quarter saw both sides taking a more direct approach as Belgium enjoyed more possession which paid off for them as they took the lead through Stan Branicki in the 19th minute. India soon earned a penalty corner but their effort was saved by the Junior World Cup finalists’ goalkeeper which meant Belgium led by a goal at the end of second quarter.

Third quarter started on a bright note for India as Nikki Pradhan levelled the score in 36th minute. India dominated the third quarter as midfielder Neha Goyal came close to scoring but was denied by another brilliant save by Belgium’s goalkeeper. However, the home team took the lead again in the 43rd minute as they rallied for a wonderful field goal scored by Matthieu de Laet.

Belgium Junior Men’s team started the fourth quarter swiftly as Indian goalkeeper Rajani Etimarpu had to make a reflex save. Indian Women’s Team fought back into the match in the dying stages as Vandana Katariya (54th minute) scored with just few minutes left to full time and equalise the scores at 2-2.

However, Belgium were awarded a PC which was well saved by Rajani and cleared by defender Sunita Lakra. The home team forced Rajani into making yet another impressive save in the dying minutes as the Indian defence held on to a well-deserved 2-2 draw.

India will play Ladies Den Bosch in their third match of the Europe Tour on September 14, 2017 at 2130 hrs IST.

Please find attached the updated schedule and action photos from the match between Indian Women’s Hockey team and Belgium Junior Men’s team.

Left proves right for Manush; Swastika keeps Selena in a tangle to wear maiden crown

Dharwad, September 11: Manush Shah of the Airports Authority of India added yet another title in the Junior Boys category when he downed Jeet Chandra of West Bengal 4-1 while Swastika Ghosh of Maharashtra outplayed Selenadeepthi Selvakumar, also of AAI, to score a similar victory and claim her maiden Junior Girls crown in the LIC-IOC All India National Ranking Table Tennis Championships (South Zone) at the District Indoor Stadium here today.

Left-hander Manush Shah, who is a recent AAI recruit on scholarship, was more consistent with his winners today than his West Bengal rival, who was rendered ineffective absolutely. Jeet, who felled Manav Thakkar in the semi-final earlier, was making far too many mistakes which only aided the boy from Gujarat.

Manush was attacking from the word go. Unable to counter, Jeet was pushed to the corner. So much so that even his normal blocks seemed to have deserted him like his precise forehand winners. Gaining ascendancy and piling on the agony of Jeet, the AAI lad was severe on anything loose as he went on to accumulate quick points.

Down 0-2, the West Bengal lad banked on his never-say-die attitude to repair the damage. He did succeed and won the third game but Manush was right on the money to pull the shutters down on him, taking the next two games to lift the glittering golden trophy.

Swastika, who is still a Cadet girl, was for the first time competing in the Junior section here. Having picked a few Cadet and Sub-Junior silverwares already, it was a wise decision for her to make a try in the higher section. And, she didn’t disappoint anyone, including herself.

Probably, the 4-2 quarterfinal win over PSPB’s Archana Kamath and later the semifinal riumph over state mate Srushti Halaengadi, also by a similar margin, must have given her the confidence and nicely set her up for the final showdown against Selena.

But neither Selena’s experience, nor skills could deny Swastika her title. This was in spite of losing an extended second game as Selena fought back well. But Swastika launched herself in the nick of time, showing great maturity and intensity. Selena wilted under pressure as her counters were not coming good. Soon, it was curtains for the girl from Tamil Nadu as the Maharashtra girl went from strength to strength.

Results:

Junior Boys Singles: Final: Manush Shah (AAI) bt Jeet Chandra (WB) 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8; Semi-finals: Manush Shah bt Yashansh Malik (Del) 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 13-11, 5-11, 11-3; Jeet Chandra bt Manav Thakkar (PSPB) 11-7, 11-9, 4-11, 11-5, 11-6.

Junior Girls Singles: Final: Swastika Ghosh (Mah) bt Selenadeepthi Selvakumar (AAI) 11-8, 13-15, 11-3, 11-5, 11-5; Semi-finals: Selenadeepthi Selvakumar bt Ishita Gupta 8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, Swastika Ghosh bt Srushti Haleangadi (Mah) 11-9, 11-4, 3-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-8.

Sharath creeps into semis; Madhurika survives as Archana rolls past Takeme into last 4

Dharwad, September 9: Top-seed A.Sharath Kamal crept his way into the semi-finals of the LIC-IOC All India National Ranking Table Tennis Championships (South Zone) when he beat a sturdy Sougata Sarkar of LIC 4-3 at the District Indoor Stadium here today.

Second-seed G.Sathiyan brushed aside left-hander Sail Shetty’s challenge, winning his match 4-2, while Manav Thakkar and A. Amalraj eased into the next round without a sweat on a sultry evening.

Normally a free-flowing Sharath was not in his elements. Despite taking the first game with some struggle, he allowed a two-game cushion to Sougata as the LIC’s old warhorse led 3-2, putting Sharath in an awkward position. But Sharath steadied himself well at the crucial juncture knock the stuffing out of Sougata.

Sathiyan, facing a fast-paced Sanil, more or less sailed in the same boat when he allowed his rival come too close for his comfort before going all out in the sixth game to clinch it and the match.

Ankita Das was on the verge of equalling when she led comfortably in the sixth game at 7-2 but let Madhurika claw her way back into the game and take 10-9 lead. But on match point, Madhurika spilled the chance as Ankita deuced. From there, the national champion squandered four match points before winning the match on the fifth. Ankita had three game points but she could not put them into account and take the issue to the decider. Madhurika won 4-2.

PSPB’s Archana had some initial hiccups when Railways Takeme Sarkar, playing her best in recent times, challenged her supremacy. Yet, a calm and cool Archana inched her way slowly from 2-2 to take the next two games comfortably for a 4-2 verdict as the Railways paddler lost her way after a lot of promise.

As for Manika, brushing aside her initial struggle she reeled off eight straight points from 3-7 to win the fifth game to push the RBI girl, Amrutha Pushpak out of race and win 4-1. On the other hand, Suthirtha had sewn it up rather nicely against veteran Mouma Das with a 4-1 victory.

Earlier in the day, top-seed Pooja Sahasrabuddhe stumbled in the pre-quarterfinals allowing unseeded Amrutha Pushpak win 11-9, 11-6, 11-7, 2-11, 11-5. It was an ordinary game dished out by Pooja who won the Institutional women singles title in the first week of August at New Delhi. But credit must be given to the RBI girl who played brilliantly to outsmart the top seed.

In men singles, fourth seed Arjun Ghosh and sixth seed Abhishek Yadav bowed out as Subhajit Saha and Anthony Amalraj, respectively, scalped them in the pre-quarters. Saha won 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 11-3, 4-11, 11-8 and Amalraj made it a straight games affairs with 11-8, 11-9, 11-5, 11-1 triumph. Top-seeded Sharath beat Railways Anirban Nandi 10-12, 11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 13-11, but young Jeet Chandra ousted floater Birdie Boro in straight games. Manav Thakkar followed suit downing Siddesh Pande 4-0.

Action in Youth Boys and Girls entered the main draw stage with two rounds to be played tonight. Liberal byes in the Boys section meant that it would be a draw of 64 with the seeds getting down to business from round two. The Girls were not so luck in the 32 draw format and they would be playing two rounds tonight.

As for the Junior Boys and Girls, the qualification process gets over today with the main draw set to begin tomorrow.

For his consistent showing, Princepal was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Championship

Team India was a dominant force throughout the Championship, as they scored more than 100 points on three different occasions and limited their opponents to 50 or lesser points on multiple occasions. The stats speak for itself as India now cruise into the FIBA U16 Asian Championship with ease, which will be held in Malaysia later this year.

India (Princepal SIngh 20 pts, Binod Rajak 20 pts, Prashant Tomar 16 pts) bt Bhutan 131-50 [40-7, 20-21, 41-10, 30-12]

Joshna Chinappa loses the final of the HKFC International squash

Hong Kong: Joshna Chinappa’s dreams of a title ended swiftly on Saturday with the top seeded Egyptian Nour El Tayeb, in ruthless touch, racing to a straight game victory in the final of the HKFC International, a major PSA World tour event.

The former Egyptian national champion, currently ranked 14, two rungs below Joshna , defeated the third seeded Indian 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 to lift only her fourth PSA title, the last being more than a year ago.

Abhay and Sunayna are in their maiden PSA final

Coffs Harbour (Australia): Two leading Indian juniors just coming into the senior ranks Abhay Singh and Sunanya Kuruvilla are on the threshold of touching a milestone in their careers by reaching the final in their respective section of the North Coast Squash Open, a PSA world tour event here on Saturday.

A win would be a maiden PSA title-triumph for both players, who are trainees at the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai. What is significant about Abhay’s rise is that he had qualified for the main draw via the qualifiers. Beating New Zealand’s Ben Grindrod, the fourth seed, was his first round success and then in the quarterfinal, he ousted the Australian Solayman Nowrozi. Both matches were won in convincing style and then in the semi-final Abhay showed his fighting qualities against the top seeded Rhys Dowling of Australia. Down by two games and 7-10 in the third game, the Indian made a dramatic come back to not just win that crucial game but polish off the next two for a sensational show of grit and guts. Abhay won 6-11, 5-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8 for his maiden PSA final.

Sunayna on the other hand had a tough start, a five-game tussle against sixth seed Abbie Palmer of New Zealand before getting past into the quarterfinal where she swept aside fourth seed Samantha Foyle of Australia in straight games. In the semi-final, Sunanya picked a leaf from her male colleague to fight her way past the second seed Lisa Camilleri of Austrlia in five games. Sunayna’s 5-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6 effort put her also in a PSA final for the first time.

Harmeet disappoints, Siddesh on cloud nine in National Ranking TT (South Zone)

Dharwad, September 8: On a day that saw a couple of men seeds falling by the wayside, No. 3 Harmeet Desai, who will be playing his first Asian Cup in a week’s time at Ahmedabad, must be the most disappointed.

Unseeded Birdie Boro felled Harmeet 4-2 (5-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7) in a gripping battle of the LIC-IOC All India National Ranking Table Tennis Championships (South Zone) at the District Indoor Stadium here today. But the rot began even before Harmeet bowed out as former junior national champion Siddesh Pande of Maharashtra sent fifth seed Raj Mondal packing 4-3 (4-11, 11-8, 5-11, 4-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5) to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

Dangerous floater Nitin Thiruvengadam of Canara Bank was also on the verge of causing a major upset but failed to cash in on four match points when he led 10-6 and then another one after Sanil Shetty deuced to let seventh off the hook. Shetty won the marathon battle that lasted nearly 95 minutes 12-10, 9-11, 4-11, 7-11, 11-8, 16-14, 12-10.

Top seed Sharath began well but was stretched a bit by Tamil Nadu’s Ananth Devarajan, particularly in the fourth game. The rest of seeds faced little trouble in entering the pre-quarterfinals.

However, the matches between Siddesh and Raj and Sail and Nitin kept the audience glued to their vantage positions in the gallery and closer to the courts where the action was taking place.

Siddesh was 1-3 down and it looked like a cakewalk for Raj. But the youngster pulled out all stops and played brilliantly, matching every stroke of the experienced RBI paddler. The Maharashtra boy reeled out several winners, particularly in the last two games which studdned Mondal.

Similarly, Nitin will go back home equally disappointed after putting up a great show. One doesn’t get such an opportunity of a four match-point advantage and he must be ruing the crucial mistakes he committed.

As for Harmeet, who needed sufficient practice before the Ahmedabad event, was way off the mark falling short on occasions when Birdie decided to go on the rampage. In fact, Birdie was down 5-8 in the fifth game and managed to pull it back at 9-all only to lose steam. However, he didn’t take any further chance and shut his rival out with a clinical job in the next.

With men and women seeds jumping into fray for the first time, the focus naturally shifted from group qualifiers to the top paddlers in the morning. But it didn’t set the alarm bells ringing. All but one of them moved into the next round and they were joined by the tried and tested ones in the race to trophy.

Seventh seed Akula Sreeja from the Reserve Bank of India was the lone first-round victim in women singles as she went down to Moumita Datta of AAI. It was the most interesting morning match where the two equals were having a slug fest. In fact, Sreeja twice led in the match, first 2-0 and then 3-2.

But the AAI girl took wings and flew into the second round with some astonishing forehand winners, especially in the sixth, as she beat the seventh seed 8-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-6, 8-11, 13-11, 11-8. She will next meet Yashini Sivashankar of Tamil Nadu, another promising youngster, who beat Kerala’s Maria Rony 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6.

Mouma Das, who duly booked her place in the main draw last night, had little problem in putting it across her PSPB colleague Mousumi Paul 11-4, 17-15, 11-7, 11-6. Of course, Mousumi put up some resistance in the second game which saw a few deuces and three game points being squandered by Mouma. She won the game and cleaned up Mousumi soon after.

Other important results (R-32): Anirban Nandi (Rlys) bt Sourav Sha (PSPB) 11-8, 12-10, 12-10, 12-10, Omkar Torgalkar (Mah) bt Utkarsh Gupta (Del) 11-7, 10-12, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, Sougata Sarkar (LIC) bt Jalay Mehta (Guj) 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8, Manav Thakkar (PSPB) bt Vivek Bhargava (Raj) 6-11, 11-6, 11-6, 13-11, 11-5, Subhajit Saha (PSPB) bt Jubin Kumar (PSPB) 11-9, 17-15, 15-13, 6-11, 11-8, Arjun Ghosh (AAI) bt Sanish Ambekar (Mah) 9-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, Jeet Chandra (WB) bt Ronit Bhanja (WB) 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8, A.
