Bengaluru FC’s Struggle and Hope for Revival:

Jamshedpur FC, under the guidance of Scott Cooper, is in search of consistent form and identity. Having lost five out of their first nine games, they are desperate for a series of wins to salvage their season. Despite their individual talents, the team has struggled to find collective success. They face the challenge of improving their attack, creativity in midfield, and overall performance levels. A victory against Bengaluru FC could serve as a catalyst for a much-needed resurgence.

Key Players to Watch:

– Sunil Chhetri (Bengaluru FC): The experienced forward, with three goals and two assists this season, is crucial for lifting the team’s morale and performance.

– Daniel Chima Chukwu (Jamshedpur FC):The Nigerian striker’s presence in the box and goal-scoring abilities will be vital for Jamshedpur FC’s offensive strategy.

Head-to-Head Record:
In their 12 encounters, Bengaluru FC has won five times, Jamshedpur FC four, with three matches ending in draws. Jamshedpur FC’s forward play has been notable, with a high percentage of forward passes, suggesting an attacking approach.

Gerard Zaragoza expressed his joy and commitment to bringing Bengaluru FC back to its peak. Scott Cooper emphasized Jamshedpur FC’s philosophy of proactive, pressing football, despite the challenges faced by his young team.

Spaniards reach FIFA Women’s World Ranking summit for first time

Four months have passed since the last FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking was published in August, during which time over 400 international matches have taken place. Never before have so many fixtures been fulfilled in an equivalent period.

Qualifiers for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 and UEFA Women’s Nations League games were on the agenda for European teams. Nations in the AFC, CAF and Concacaf zones, meanwhile, were involved in qualifying matches for their respective continental tournaments, with OFC representatives – with the exception of Aotearoa New Zealand – competing at the Pacific Games.

This plethora of events inevitably had an impact on December’s FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking, the last of 2023.

Consequently, reigning world champions Spain (1st) claimed top spot for the first time. They are the fourth team in football history to reach the coveted position, after the USA (2nd, up 1), Germany and Sweden. France (3rd, up 2) make up the podium.

England (4th, -) remain just below those three highflyers, ahead of previous leaders Sweden (5th, down 4). Germany (6th), the Netherlands (7th), Japan (8th), Korea DPR (9th) and Canada (10th) complete the top ten, which no longer features Brazil (11th, down 2).

As for the remainder of the top 50, Italy (14th, up 3), Philippines (38th, up 6) and Uzbekistan (47th, up 3) made noteworthy advances. The biggest moves came further down the standings, however, where Congo DR (102nd, up 9), El Salvador (104th, up 11) and Namibia (126th, up 14) all made considerable progress.

In addition to La Roja, Philippines, Haiti (51st), Cambodia (116th) and Cabo Verde (131st) attained their highest-ever placings.

Six nations either appear for the first time (Central African Republic and Macau) or reappear (Korea DPR, American Samoa, Madagascar and Bahamas) in the World Ranking, which brings the number of teams listed to 192 – a new record! And with six other national sides just one match away from joining, it could grow even further in March.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking will be published in March 2024

Agent service fees reach all-time high in 2023

The total spending on club agent service fees has reached unprecedented heights in 2023, with a total outlay of USD 888.1 million compared to USD 623.2 million last year according to FIFA’s Football Agents in International Transfers Report. This represents an increase of 42.5% compared to the level of spending in 2022, and even surpasses the previous record from 2019 (USD 654.7 million) by more than one third.

By far, the largest proportion of all club agents were employed by clubs in Europe, which also account for the lion’s share (86.6%) of global spending on club agents. Similarly, European clubs employed 86.6% of all engaging-club agents and 82.6% of all releasing-club agents.

The largest amount of agent service fees were paid by clubs from England, with a combined total of more than USD 280 million. While not investing in releasing-club agents, Saudi Arabian clubs had the second-biggest spending on engaging-club agents with USD 86.0 million. Korea Republic had the greatest share of outgoing transfers with a releasing-club agent, with 31.6%.

The number of international transfers with an agent acting on behalf of the player reached a record high in 2023 with a total of 3,353 transfers. This corresponds to 15.4% of all transfers and represents an increase of 8.4% compared to 2022. For the first time ever, clubs in women’s professional football spent more than USD 1 million for the services of club agents, with a total outlay of just under USD 1.4 million. Club agents were present in a record number of 125 transfers, an increase of more than 20% compared to 2022.

The process for obtaining a licence and becoming a football agent under the FIFA Football Agent Regulations (FFAR) opened on 9 January 2023 and all individuals could apply for such a licence. During the period covered by the report (1 January 2023 to 30 November 2023), FIFA received 19,973 licensing applications. Out of the total number of exam applicants, 9,207 took the exam on one of two dates. The first exam was held on 19 April 2023, with testing locations at 138 member associations, and the second exam took place on 20 September 2023, with testing locations at 157 member associations. Out of the 9,207 people who sat the exam, 32.6% passed.

As part of its objective to bring more transparency to the football transfer system, FIFA publishes an annual report on football agents. For the first time, due to the adoption and entering into force of the new FFAR, the report not only presents extensive analyses of football agents’ activity in international transfers but also provides insightful information about the newly introduced licensing system.

ISL: Kerala Blasters FC squeeze in three points against Punjab FC

New Delhi, 14 December 2023: Kerala Blasters FC sneaked past Punjab FC by a slight margin of 1-0 to secure an important victory at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 tonight.

Kerala Blasters FC kept their first clean sheet in 10 away encounters as a neat defensive performance coupled with conversion of a spot-kick in the 51st minute handed the Kerala Blasters FC three points after a draw and a loss respectively in their last two games.

Punjab FC were on the move right from the offset. The Blasters appeared to have kept a conservative approach in the beginning, as they adjusted to a brief phase of the season in the absence of skipper Adrian Luna.

This resulted in the home team being brave in taking their chances, with Madih Talal, Krishnananda Singh, and Nikhil Prabhu coming close to break the deadlock in the first half. One of these moves was that when Prabhu and Talal interlinked, thanks to a cross by the latter that the defender squandered despite taking the shot from the middle of the 18-yard box.

Mohammed Aimen was the standout performer from the Punjab FC midfield tonight. Just before the half-time break, he had joined hands with Kwame Peprah by setting up a pass in the path of the striker that the 22-year-old shot off target.

Aimen though worked his way inside the box in the 50th minute to earn a foul though, that led to Dimitrios Diamantakos converting the subsequent spot-kick. With Luna injured out, Diamantakos had the onus to make this chance count. The Greek forward didn’t disappoint, slotting the ball in the middle of the net.

Punjab FC had a glimmer of hope with former NorthEast United FC forward Wilmar Jordan Gil coming off the bench to take a promising shot inside the box. The effort was well dealt with by an organised backline of the visitors, as the Tuskers sealed an important win.

Key Performer of the Match

Dimitrios Diamantakos (Kerala Blasters FC)

Diamantakos completed 20 passes, tackled twice, made one clearance, created a goal-scoring chance in addition to converting the important penalty to bag the three points for the Kerala Blasters FC.

What’s next for both teams?

Punjab FC will next host Chennaiyin FC on December 18, whereas Kerala Blasters FC will welcome Mumbai City FC for their coming clash on December 24.

Brief Scores

Punjab FC 0 – 1 Kerala Blasters FC (Dimitrios Diamantakos 51’)

ISL: Mohun Bagan Super Giant keen to get back to winning ways as they take on hosts NorthEast United FC

Guwahati, 14th December 2023: In an enthralling Indian Super League (ISL) match, Mohun Bagan Super Giant clinched a crucial victory over NorthEast United FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Friday, 15th December. The win helped the Mariners regain their winning momentum after a 2-2 draw against Odisha FC and a 1-0 loss to Maziya S&RC in their previous fixtures.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant entered the game dealing with several injury concerns but demonstrated resilience and tactical acumen under coach Juan Ferrando. The team had set two major objectives for the season: topping the ISL league table and performing well in the AFC Cup. While their AFC Cup campaign ended prematurely, they have shown remarkable form in the domestic league, starting with five consecutive wins, a record in ISL history.

Facing a challenging opponent in NorthEast United FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant had to navigate through the Highlanders’ tough defense. NorthEast United, two points behind sixth-placed Chennaiyin FC, were looking to arrest their recent slump in form and revitalize their season under coach Juan Pedro Benali.

NorthEast United FC’s past encounters with Mohun Bagan Super Giant have been goal-laden, and they hoped to leverage their home advantage and fan support to create an upset. Their previous campaign’s sole victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the same venue was a source of inspiration.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s comeback against Odisha FC in their last match, where Armando Sadiku scored twice, was a confidence booster. Despite injury concerns, the depth and quality of their squad were expected to play a crucial role in this high-stakes encounter.

Key players for both teams included Gani Nigam for NorthEast United FC, known for his balanced approach in midfield, and Dimitrios Petratos for Mohun Bagan Super Giant, a consistent goal threat and creative force in the attack.

The match promised to be a tactical battle, with both teams vying for crucial points in a tightly contested league. For the Highlanders, the challenge was to overcome a formidable Mohun Bagan Super Giant side, while the Mariners aimed to solidify their position at the top of the table.

Fans could catch the action in various languages across multiple channels and streaming platforms, reflecting the growing popularity and reach of the Indian Super League.

UCL: AC Milan Edges Newcastle 2-1 to Secure Europa League Spot, PSG Advances in Champions League

AC Milan secured a spot in the Europa League playoffs with a crucial 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, a result that also ensured Paris Saint-Germain’s advancement to the Champions League round of 16.

Despite finishing level with PSG on eight points in Group F, Milan had to settle for third place due to their inferior head-to-head record against the French team. Christian Pulisic, who scored Milan’s equalizer in the 59th minute, expressed pride in his team’s achievement and looked forward to competing in the Europa League. Pulisic’s goal marked him as the first U.S. international to score for three different teams in the Champions League.

Newcastle’s first Champions League campaign in two decades, and their first under Saudi ownership, concluded with a disappointing bottom-place finish in the group, marking a significant setback for the club with high aspirations.

Joelinton put Newcastle ahead in the 33rd minute with a powerful strike, but Pulisic’s equalizer, assisted by Olivier Giroud, shifted the momentum. Samuel Chukwueze, a substitute for Milan, scored the winning goal in the 84th minute with a curling finish, only 68 seconds after entering the game.

The result was a disappointment for Milan coach Stefan Pioli, who felt his team deserved more from their Champions League campaign. Milan’s European pedigree includes seven European championships and two European Cup Winners’ Cup titles, but they have yet to win the Europa League or its predecessor, the UEFA Cup.

The match also highlighted Newcastle’s limitations due to injuries, with manager Eddie Howe acknowledging the challenges faced by his squad. Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s crucial save to deny Bruno Guimarães was a turning point in the game, as Newcastle struggled to create opportunities as the match progressed.

The conclusion of the group stage sees only Manchester City and Arsenal from the Premier League advancing to the round of 16, marking the weakest challenge from English teams in the Champions League for 11 years. This outcome reflects the intense competition and unpredictability in European football’s top club competition.

UCL:Galeno Stars as Porto Secures Knockout Stage Berth with 5-3 Victory Over Shakhtar Donetsk

Porto secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages with a thrilling 5-3 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at home on Wednesday. Galeno was the standout performer for Porto, scoring twice and providing two assists in a dominant display.

The victory placed Porto second in Group H with 12 points, tying with group winners Barcelona. Shakhtar, finishing third in the group, will now continue their European journey in the Europa League knockout round playoffs.

Galeno opened the scoring for Porto in the ninth minute, finding himself unmarked and tapping in from close range following a precise cross. Shakhtar Donetsk responded with Danylo Sikan’s equalizer in the 29th minute, but Galeno restored Porto’s lead shortly before halftime with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box.

In the second half, Galeno continued to impact the game, setting up Mehdi Taremi for Porto’s third goal in the 62nd minute. Although an own goal by Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio in the 72nd minute narrowed the margin, Porto quickly regained control. Pepe added the fourth goal, once again assisted by Galeno, and Francisco Conceicao scored the fifth goal in the 82nd minute, sealing a decisive win for Porto.

Eguinaldo managed to score a late consolation goal for Shakhtar Donetsk, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.

Porto’s victory was a showcase of their attacking prowess and Galeno’s remarkable individual performance. With this win, Porto demonstrated their quality and resilience, ensuring their progression in the Champions League, while Shakhtar Donetsk will have to shift their focus to the Europa League.

UCL: PSG Secures Knockout Stage Spot with 1-1 Draw at Borussia Dortmund

Paris Saint-Germain managed to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stage despite a 1-1 draw against Group F winners Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

In a match marked by missed opportunities from both teams, Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, giving Dortmund the lead after capitalizing on a lost possession by PSG. Adeyemi’s goal, slotting the ball in off the post, added pressure to the visitors, who needed a positive result to ensure their progression in the competition.

PSG responded quickly, with Warren Zaire-Emery finding the equalizer just five minutes later, following an assist from Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe himself had a goal disallowed for offside in the 76th minute after a VAR review.

The first half was surprisingly goalless, despite multiple golden chances created by both sides. PSG gradually grew into the game, with efforts from Lee Kang-in and Mbappe, while Bradley Barcola and Randal Kolo Muani also came close for the visitors.

Dortmund had their share of opportunities, with Marco Reus forcing a save from PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Adeyemi missing an open goal chance before halftime.

Dortmund, having already qualified for the knockout stages, topped the group with 11 points. PSG’s draw placed them second on eight points, level with third-placed AC Milan, who will continue their European campaign in the Europa League. Newcastle United finished the group stage with five points.

PSG defender Marquinhos emphasized the importance of qualifying and the need to prepare well for the upcoming challenges in the knockout stage. He acknowledged the team’s focus on improving their away performance after losing their previous two away matches in the group.

The draw was a relief for PSG, ensuring their progression in the Champions League despite not securing the top spot in the group. Dortmund, on the other hand, maintained their strong form in the competition, finishing as group leaders. The match was a showcase of missed chances and tight margins, with both teams demonstrating their attacking prowess but falling short in conversion.

UCL: Atletico Madrid Clinches Top Spot in Champions League Group E with 2-0 Victory Over Lazio

Atletico Madrid secured the top position in Champions League Group E with a commanding 2-0 win over Lazio on Wednesday. The victory, led by goals from Antoine Griezmann and Samuel Lino, was a testament to Diego Simeone’s team’s resilience and skill.

The match marked a significant turnaround from last year’s disappointment when Atletico was knocked out in the group stage. Entering the final matchday of the group stage unbeaten and already assured of a spot in the last 16, Atletico needed at least a point against Lazio to guarantee first place. Their win saw them finish with 14 points, four clear of second-place Lazio.

Atletico’s dominance was evident throughout the game, with Brazil’s Samuel Lino particularly impressive on the left wing. Lino set up Griezmann for the opening goal in the sixth minute after winning possession near the box and delivering a precise cross. Griezmann’s first-time strike was his fifth Champions League goal of the season, tying him with Erling Haaland, Rasmus Hojlund, and teammate Álvaro Morata as the competition’s top scorers.

Griezmann’s goal also brought him closer to breaking Luis Aragones’ record as Atletico’s all-time top scorer, with only two goals separating him from the record of 173.

Atletico continued to press, with Mario Hermoso having a goal disallowed for offside before the break. Memphis Depay also missed a couple of great opportunities. However, Lino doubled Atletico’s lead in the 51st minute with a stunning volley, securing the win for the home side.

The victory marked Atletico’s 20th consecutive home win in all competitions, equalling the club’s record set during the 2012-13 season. Their last failure to win at home was a LaLiga draw against Getafe in February.

Speaking after the game, Lino emphasized the importance of the fans and the team’s energy. He highlighted the collective effort and the team’s commitment to Atletico’s style of play, which requires players to be physically prepared to attack and defend with intensity.

With this victory, Atletico Madrid demonstrated their quality and determination, ensuring they head into the knockout stages of the Champions League as group leaders. The team’s strong performance bodes well for their ambitions in both European and domestic competitions.

UCL: Royal Antwerp Stuns Barcelona with Dramatic 3-2 Victory in Champions League

Royal Antwerp pulled off a stunning upset with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Barcelona at home on Wednesday, marking their first-ever win in the Champions League. Despite the win, Antwerp’s triumph in Group H wasn’t enough to keep them in the competition, but it did prevent them from finishing the group stage without any points.

The match began with a quick start from Antwerp, as teenager Arthur Vermeeren put the home team ahead just 90 seconds into the game. Barcelona, fielding a side with several regular starters rested, found an equalizer through Ferran Torres 10 minutes before the halftime break.

Vincent Janssen restored Antwerp’s lead early in the second half, setting the stage for a tense finish. As the match headed into stoppage time, Barcelona’s 17-year-old Marc Guiu scored what seemed like a decisive equalizer, dampening the spirits of the Antwerp fans.

However, in a remarkable twist, Antwerp immediately responded from the kick-off. George Ilenikhena, another teenage substitute, surged downfield and scored the winning goal, igniting wild celebrations at the Royal Antwerp stadium.

Despite their historic win, Antwerp concluded their Champions League debut at the bottom of the group standings. Meanwhile, Barcelona, already assured of advancing to the knockout stages, confirmed their position as group winners, thanks to Porto’s 5-3 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the other Group H fixture.

The match showcased the unpredictability and excitement of European football, with Royal Antwerp’s young talents rising to the occasion against one of the continent’s most storied clubs. For Barcelona, the result was a reminder of the challenges that can arise even against ostensibly weaker opponents, particularly in the Champions League’s demanding environment.

UCL: Manchester City’s Academy Stars Shine in 3-2 Champions League Victory Over Red Star Belgrade

Manchester City’s young talents stepped into the spotlight as they secured a thrilling 3-2 win against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League group stage finale on Wednesday, marking a significant achievement for the club’s academy program.

Micah Hamilton, a 20-year-old academy product, made a dream senior debut by scoring in the 19th minute. Cutting around a Belgrade defender, Hamilton expertly fired the ball from a tight angle into the far corner, showcasing his potential and skill.

Oscar Bobb, another 20-year-old academy graduate, doubled City’s lead in the 62nd minute with an impressive solo effort, dribbling past the defense before placing a shot into the bottom corner.

Kalvin Phillips added to the tally by converting a penalty, ensuring City finished their group stage campaign with a perfect 18 points from six games. This feat places them alongside Liverpool as the only English teams to win all six Champions League group games.

Despite the match having little impact on the Group G standings and Manchester City making nine changes from their Premier League victory over Luton Town, the performance was a testament to the depth and quality of City’s squad. Notably, star striker Erling Haaland was absent due to a foot injury.

The game, held at the Rajko Mitic Stadium, was a showcase for City’s academy, with Hamilton and Bobb stepping up in Haaland’s absence and delivering standout performances.

Red Star Belgrade, who finished at the bottom of the group with just one point, made a commendable comeback in the second half, energizing the crowd with their spirited play. Hwang In-beom and Aleksandar Katai scored late goals for Belgrade, bringing the scoreline to a close 3-2.

City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortego was called into action after the break, making two crucial saves before Belgrade’s goals. The late resurgence from Belgrade added excitement to the match, but Manchester City held on to their lead, securing the victory.

The win not only highlights Manchester City’s dominance in Europe but also underscores the success of their academy program, with young players like Hamilton and Bobb stepping up on the big stage and delivering when it matters most.

ISL: Bengaluru FC rope in Gerard Zaragoza as Head Coach

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Football Club, on Thursday, named Spanish tactician Gerard Zaragoza as the club’s new Head Coach on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 season. The announcement comes on the back of the club’s decision to part ways with Englishman Simon Grayson, who left the club by mutual consent following the side’s 4-0 defeat to Mumbai City FC last Friday.

Forty-one-year-old Zaragoza, who was part of Bengaluru’s ISL-winning squad of 2018-19 as Assistant Coach to Carles Cuadrat, is due to arrive in Bengaluru upon the completion of VISA formalities and travel documentation.

“I would like to welcome Gerard back to Bengaluru FC. Over the last five years, Gerard has had stints as Head Coach in top leagues across Asia. Through his time away, he has been in touch with us, and expressed a deep desire to return and give back to the club that gave him his first silverware in a coaching role. I am confident that he will bring back the brand of football that we have been used to in the past. He possesses good tactical nous, and has also been instrumental in improving young players. Bengaluru FC teams – from the youth academy through to the first team – will have a common identity in terms of style that Gerard and his team will work to implement. I wish him the best and am looking forward to the rest of this season,” said club owner and Director, Parth Jindal.

Zaragoza had stints at Greek side Panserraikos and, most recently, Emirati UAE Pro League side Khor Fakkan Club, where he was named Manager of the Week on two occasions. Argentinian Sebastian Vega, who was part of Zaragoza’s backroom staff at Khor Fakkan, Al-Ahli and Panserraikos, has been named Assistant Coach.

“This is a football club that I hold close to my heart, and the decision to return to this family has been the easiest one to make. I know the circumstances in which I am arriving at the club are extremely difficult, but also very challenging. I am sure that with the right direction, this club can get back to where it belongs. I can’t wait to arrive in India and begin work with the players and the staff. Most of all, I am looking forward to a reunion with the wonderful fans of this club. Together, we will make this right,” said Zaragoza, after putting pen to paper on the deal.

A former youth footballer himself, Zaragoza managed the Catalonia U14s and U16s and was also part of the Aspire Academy’s Qatari branch in 2010. In 2011, he was named Head Coach of RCD Espanyol’s Cadete squad. The Spaniard moved to Erovnuli Liga 2 side Locomotive Tbilisi in 2012, achieving promotion to Liga 1 the following year.

“Bringing Gerard back is a decision taken with a lot of thought and we believe he is the right fit for what this club needs to return to the very top. Gerard understands what Bengaluru FC is all about, is structured in his approach, and we are positive that his appointment is a step in the right direction,” said Blues’ Director of Football, Darren Caldeira.

Following multiple stints in Georgia and Qatar, Zaragoza was named Assistant Coach to Carles Cuadrat in Bengaluru FC’s title-winning squad of 2018-19. At the end of the season, he took the position of Head Coach at Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai FC’s U21s, eventually going on to manage the First Team. Zaragoza managed Al-Ahli to a quarterfinal finish in the AFC Champions League.

“Gerard is a coach with prior experience in Indian football, and understands the DNA of this football club. He was part of a very successful period in this club’s history, and we believe that having him back will bring a positive change in the dressing room. We look forward to working together and bringing this club back to the top,” said Blues’ Technical Consultant, Albert Roca

ISL: Chennaiyin FC breezes past Bengaluru FC powered by penalties in both halves

Chennaiyin FC beat Bengaluru FC by 2-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium to record a much-needed victory after a streak of three draws in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24.

Owen Coyle has a fond liking for Brazilian playmaker Rafael Crivellaro, and for a good reason. The 34-year-old is the architect of everything that the Marina Machans do right up front, from establishing offensive moves to chipping in with timely strikes.

Tonight, it was all Crivellaro as Chennaiyin FC completed a convincing victory against the Blues, who had parted ways with head coach Simon Grayson after their 4-0 loss at home last Friday. Former India international Renedy Singh was on the touchline as the interim at helm for the 2018-19 ISL champions, but a change at the top didn’t result in a change in the results, as the club would have hoped for after Grayson’s departure.

It started with Namgyl Bhutia handling the ball inside the 18-yard box in the sixth minute, and up stepped Crivellaro to take the spot-kick. The attacking midfielder hammered the ball to the top left corner, leaving Gurpreet Singh Sandhu little chance to keep the scores level.

However, Sandhu put up a show thereafter, making a host of saves including three important ones to deny the trio of Crivellaro, Jordan Murray, and Vincy Barretto any further strikes in the first half. In the 11th minute, the goalkeeper dived to thwart Crivellaro’s attempt, and he repeated those heroics in the 30th and 37th minutes respectively to take care of the shots taken by Murray and Barretto respectively.

Murray was operating wonderfully in tandem with Crivellaro, with his shot that nearly doubled the lead being set up by the latter. The duo did hit back in the 50th minute though, and this time Gurpreet couldn’t be the saviour for the visitors given that Murray got a chance to add to his goal-scoring tally by striking from the 12-yard box.

Crivellaro eased his way through the centre of the Bengaluru FC penalty box, and displayed some crafty trickery with his feet to earn a foul committed by Harsh Patre. This time, he let Murray do the honours, who didn’t miss the opportunity and sealed the game and secured those crucial three points for Coyle’s side.

Key Performer of the Match

Rafael Crivellaro (Chennaiyin FC)

Crivellaro scored the opener, earned the penalty for the second one, and he capped off the game with a 74% passing accuracy, making two crosses, and creating a couple of goal-scoring chances. He symbolised everything that Coyle stands for, dropping back to pitch in defensively whenever required, in addition to making the most of the openings that came in the way of the home side to help them catch hold of a critical victory against a struggling Bengaluru FC unit.

What’s next for both teams?

Chennaiyin FC will square off against Punjab FC on December 18, whereas Bengaluru FC will take on Jamshedpur FC on December 16.

Brief Scores

Chennaiyin FC 2 (Rafael Crivellaro 6’, Jordan Murray 50’) – 0 Bengaluru FC

ISL Match Preview: Kerala Blasters FC vs Punjab FC – A Battle of Contrasts

New Delhi, 13th December 2023 – The Indian Super League is set for an intriguing encounter as Kerala Blasters FC, one of the top teams this season, travel to the national capital to face Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This match, scheduled for Thursday, 14th December, pits two teams from opposite ends of the league table against each other in a game that promises to be full of excitement and strategic gameplay.

Punjab FC: Seeking a Turnaround

Punjab FC’s journey so far in their inaugural ISL season has been challenging, yet promising. They have equalled the record for the lowest points tally after nine games, a record shared with Hyderabad FC in the 2019-20 season. Despite this, their resilience is noteworthy, having drawn more matches than they have lost. Under the guidance of coach Staikos Vergetis, the team has shown a capability to stand toe-to-toe with more experienced sides. The lack of a decisive finishing touch has been their primary shortcoming, something they’ll be eager to overcome.

Defensively, Punjab FC needs to tighten up, having conceded 16 goals so far. Their style, characterized by agility and quick passes, has been effective in drawing fouls, leading the league in this statistic. The team will look to capitalize on set-pieces, utilizing their aerial strength. Key to their aspirations will be Luka Majcen, their Slovenian striker, who has been a consistent threat upfront.

Kerala Blasters FC: Maintaining Momentum

On the other side, Kerala Blasters FC comes off a narrow defeat to FC Goa and a high-scoring draw against Chennaiyin FC. Currently trailing the league leaders, the Blasters are focused on closing the gap and cannot afford to drop points. The team, known for its entertaining style of play, boasts of dynamic forwards like Dimitrios Diamantakos and Adrian Luna, alongside Indian stars such as Danish Farooq and Pritam Kotal.

The Blasters have been impressive in their start to matches, often scoring early and not conceding in the initial phases of the game. However, their inability to maintain clean sheets, especially in away games, remains a concern. This match provides another opportunity to address these issues and fortify their position in the league.

Key Players to Watch

  • Luka Majcen (Punjab FC): With his ability to score both inside and outside the box, Majcen will be central to Punjab’s attacking strategy. His aerial prowess and playmaking abilities make him a multifaceted threat.
  • Pritam Kotal (Kerala Blasters FC): A veteran in defense, Kotal’s interceptions, clearances, and overall game awareness will be critical in countering Punjab FC’s attacks. His leadership at the back will be key to Kerala’s defensive strategy.

Historical Context and Team Talk

This will be the first ISL meeting between Kerala Blasters FC and Punjab FC. Kerala Blasters have struggled against new teams in the past and will be keen to overturn this trend. Both teams have expressed a strong commitment to their game plans, with Punjab focusing on disciplined execution and Kerala aiming to play offensive, chance-creating football.

Conclusion

As Kerala Blasters FC and Punjab FC prepare for their clash, the stakes are high for both teams. While Punjab seeks their maiden ISL win, Kerala Blasters aims to keep up their chase for the top spot. The contrasting styles and objectives of the teams set the stage for a fascinating match in the heart of the Indian capital.

UCL: Napoli Secure Champions League Knockout Stage Berth with Convincing Win Over Braga

Naples: Napoli solidified their position in the Champions League knockout stages with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Braga at home. The Italian club concluded their Group C campaign in second place with 10 points, eight points behind group leaders Real Madrid.

The match began with Napoli establishing their dominance early. Matteo Politano’s ninth-minute cross led to the opening goal, unfortunately turned into his own net by Braga’s Serdar Saatci. This own goal set the tone for the rest of the match, as Napoli continued to press forward.

Napoli’s qualification was all but assured in the 33rd minute when Victor Osimhen skillfully back-heeled a cross from Natan, managing to push the loose ball into the net. This strike by Osimhen, his first in the Champions League this season, came after the Nigerian international recently won the African Footballer of the Year award.

Braga, despite needing a near-miraculous comeback, started the match energetically. Rodrigo Zalazar and Bruma created early opportunities, but their efforts did not translate into goals. Bruma’s missed shot in the 44th minute, straight at Napoli’s keeper Alex Meret, summed up their night – close, yet not enough.

Napoli, who could afford a narrow loss but never looked in danger of even that, benefitted from Meret’s crucial saves, including a notable effort tipping André Horta’s shot over the bar. Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo praised the team’s defensive resilience and Meret’s performance.

With the result secured, Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri, who took over from Rudi Garcia in November, was able to rest key players like Osimhen and Politano in the second half. Mazzarri emphasized the importance of defensive solidity and maintaining the team’s balance as they aim to replicate last season’s success, where they reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

As Braga clung to third place, earning a spot in the Europa League, Napoli’s victory marks a return to form after a series of recent defeats. Looking ahead, Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions, will be keen to build on this momentum in the knockout stages, aiming to surpass last year’s quarter-final exit against AC Milan.

UCL: Manchester United’s Champions League Hopes Dashed with Defeat by Bayern Munich

Old Trafford: Manchester United’s slim hopes of progressing to the Champions League round-of-16 were quashed following a 1-0 defeat at home to group winners Bayern Munich. The loss adds further strain to Erik ten Hag’s already challenging season, with United finishing at the bottom of their group.

United faced a formidable challenge, needing a victory over Bayern and relying on FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw. However, neither outcome materialized, sealing United’s fate. Kingsley Coman’s 70th-minute goal for Bayern, who remained unbeaten in Group A with 16 points, was the deciding factor in a match that saw United’s European campaign come to a disappointing end.

United’s fans expressed their discontent, booing as the final whistle confirmed their team’s fourth-place finish in the group with just four points. This result means United won’t even secure a Europa League playoff berth as a consolation.Meanwhile, in Denmark, FC Copenhagen secured a 1-0 victory over Galatasaray to advance to the knockout stage of the Champions League, leaving Galatasaray to settle for the Europa League playoff spot.

Reflecting on a lackluster group stage performance, United managed only one win in six games, with their aspirations of advancing severely damaged following a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on November 29.

For Bayern Munich, this victory was somewhat of a formality, having already clinched the top spot in the group prior to this encounter. Coman’s goal, a result of a lapse in United’s defense, was skillfully set up by Harry Kane and calmly converted past goalkeeper André Onana.

Kane, in a post-match interview with TNT Sports, praised his team’s control over the game and expressed confidence in Bayern’s potential to excel in the competition.

United’s defensive woes were highlighted by the 15 goals conceded in the group stage, the most by any English team this year. This marks the sixth time United have exited the Champions League at the group stage, with the last occurrence in the 2020-21 season and only the second time they have finished bottom of their group since the 2005-06 campaign.

Ten Hag’s team, currently struggling with 12 defeats in 24 games across all competitions this season, also suffered a recent 3-0 loss to Bournemouth in the Premier League. This defeat to Bayern accentuated United’s difficulties, with missed opportunities by Bruno Fernandes and the injury of Harry Maguire adding to their woes on a disheartening night at Old Trafford.

UCL: Real Sociedad Clinch Top Spot in Group D with Goalless Draw at Inter Milan

San Siro: Real Sociedad secured their position as leaders of Champions League Group D, achieving a landmark progression to the knockout stages following a goalless draw against Inter Milan. The LaLiga side, demonstrating remarkable consistency, finished at the top of their group, level on points with Inter but ahead on goal difference.

In a match that promised much but delivered little in terms of goals, Sociedad’s tactical discipline was on full display at the San Siro stadium. Despite dominating possession, they were unable to break down a resilient Inter defense, failing to register a single shot on target in the first half. Inter, adopting a counter-attacking strategy, also struggled to make an impact and missed a crucial opportunity to score just before halftime.

The second half saw a more assertive Inter, buoyed by the introduction of Serie A’s leading scorer, Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine striker, known for his clinical finishing, was unable to convert his chances, leaving Inter frustrated in their search for a breakthrough.

A dramatic moment unfolded when Real Sociedad were awarded a penalty, raising hopes of a late winner. However, the decision was overturned by VAR, and Takefusa Kubo received a booking for simulation, dousing Sociedad’s hopes of snatching a win.

In the group’s other fixture, Benfica’s 3-1 triumph over RB Salzburg secured them third place, allowing them to advance to the Europa League knockout stages on goal difference.

The draw at San Siro reflects the tight competition in Group D, with both Real Sociedad and Inter Milan showcasing strong defensive performances. Sociedad’s achievement of topping the group marks a significant milestone, underlining their growth and consistency in European football.

As both teams prepare for the knockout stages, this match serves as a testament to the tactical battles and fine margins that define the Champions League’s group phase. For Real Sociedad, finishing as group leaders is not just a point of pride but a statement of intent as they look ahead to the challenges in the knockout rounds.

UCL: FC Copenhagen Defies Expectations, Secures Historic Champions League Knockout Berth with Victory Over Galatasaray

Copenhagen: In a remarkable turn of events, FC Copenhagen secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in over a decade, defeating Galatasaray 1-0 at home. This significant victory ensured a second spot in Group A, defying many experts’ predictions.

Lukas Lerager, the night’s standout performer, both scored the crucial goal and received a red card in a match that will be remembered for Copenhagen’s resilience and tactical discipline. Lerager’s 58th-minute strike was enough to light up the chilly evening and write a new chapter in the Danish club’s European history.

The match began cautiously, with Copenhagen’s Peter Ankersen missing the best chance of the first half. His effort, however, veered just wide of the post, leaving the teams level at the break. The hosts also appealed for a penalty as Elias Achouri seemed to be fouled near the Galatasaray box, but their protests were dismissed by referee Daniele Orsato.

The second half saw Copenhagen energize their supporters with the decisive moment arriving in the 58th minute. Achouri, involved in the earlier penalty shout, turned provider, setting up Lerager for a close-range finish that sent the home crowd into raptures.

Galatasaray, needing a win to advance, struggled to find their rhythm. Despite some late attempts, including two over-the-bar shots from Kerem Aktürkoglu, they failed to penetrate Copenhagen’s steadfast defense, further highlighted by two late goal-line clearances by the hosts.

The game’s final twist saw Lerager receive his marching orders after a second yellow card. Nonetheless, his goal had already etched his name in Copenhagen’s history books, securing their progression to the knockout stages for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Meanwhile, Galatasaray will continue their European campaign in the Europa League knockout round playoffs.

Reflecting on the night’s events, a suspended but elated Lerager told broadcaster Viaplay, “It’s a bit of a shame to get a red card at the end… it’s crazy, we’re going through.” This sentiment echoed through the Copenhagen camp, as midfielder Rasmus Falk expressed immense pride in overcoming the odds in such a challenging group.

As the Danish champions await the round of 16 draw on Monday, this victory marks a significant achievement in the club’s history, demonstrating the unpredictability and excitement of European football.

UCL: Ceballos Clinches Victory for Real Madrid in Thrilling Champions League Clash Against Union Berlin

Berlin: In an electrifying Champions League Group C finale, Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos emerged as the hero, netting a decisive 89th-minute goal to seal a 3-2 victory over Union Berlin. This win marks a flawless group stage campaign for Madrid, boasting six victories from six matches, while Union Berlin’s European journey concludes at the bottom of the table.

The match kicked off with Union Berlin showing early promise. Just 55 seconds in, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was called into action, executing a remarkable one-handed save to thwart Kevin Behrens’ close-range effort. Real Madrid soon responded, turning up the heat with Joselu coming close to scoring. His 16th-minute header ricocheted off the crossbar, and he narrowly missed another opportunity in the 43rd minute. The first half’s drama peaked when Luka Modric’s penalty was expertly saved by Union’s keeper Frederik Ronnow in the 45th minute.

As halftime approached, Union Berlin seized their moment. Kevin Volland capitalized on a David Alaba miskick, slotting the ball home in stoppage time, sending the hosts into the break with a surprise lead.

With their Europa League hopes hanging by a thread, Union Berlin faced relentless pressure in the second half. Ronnow once again showcased his goalkeeping prowess in the 55th minute, denying Rodrygo’s point-blank header. But he couldn’t keep Joselu at bay in the 61st minute, as the Madrid forward equalized with a header from a Fran Garcia cross.

Joselu wasn’t done yet, putting Madrid ahead in the 73rd minute with another header, this time from a near-post delivery. The match’s intensity didn’t wane as Alex Kral drew Union level with a low strike in the 85th minute.

However, Ceballos had the final word, ensuring Madrid’s victory in the 89th minute and propelling them to the top of the group with 18 points. Napoli followed into the knockout stage in second place with 10 points, while Braga and Union Berlin trailed behind with four and two points, respectively.

This match epitomized the drama and unpredictability of the Champions League, with Real Madrid demonstrating their class and resilience to emerge victorious in a challenging away fixture.

UCL: Arsenal Held to Draw by Resilient PSV in Champions League Group B Finale

In an intense clash that concluded Group B’s Champions League campaign, Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday, despite both teams having already secured their last-16 spots.

Arsenal, leading the group, took the initiative just before halftime. Eddie Nketiah, seizing his moment in Europe’s elite competition, scored his first Champions League goal in the 42nd minute. The goal was a result of an impressive team effort, with Reiss Nelson making a darting run down the right flank and engaging in a quick interchange with Cédric, culminating in a precise square pass for Nketiah to convert.

PSV Eindhoven, currently dominating the Dutch league, responded with vigor after the break. Yorbe Vertessen, a standout performer for the home side, found the net five minutes into the second half. Vertessen had earlier rattled the woodwork in the 19th minute with a header from Jordan Teze’s cross. His goal, a testament to his persistence, was a curling effort that ricocheted off both posts before crossing the line. The goal was set up by Ricardo Pepi, who played Vertessen through following a swift attack.

The match was not without its share of near-misses and intense moments. PSV could have taken the lead in the 66th minute through Ismael Saibari, whose deflected shot hit the post. Later, in the final moments, substitute Guus Till narrowly missed an opportunity to clinch the win for PSV.

Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta’s management, made significant changes to their lineup, rotating eight players from their Premier League defeat at Aston Villa. Despite the adjustments, the Gunners displayed resilience. They thought they had regained the lead when Jakub Kiwior’s header found the net, but it was disallowed for offside. In the dying seconds, PSV’s goalkeeper Walter Benítez denied Leandro Trossard with a remarkable save, and Kiwior blasted the rebound wide, squandering a chance to snatch victory.

The draw left Arsenal atop Group B with 13 points, followed by PSV with nine. RC Lens, finishing third, will continue their European journey in the Europa League. This match highlighted Arsenal’s depth and PSV’s relentless pursuit, setting the stage for an exciting knockout phase in the Champions League.

UCL: Fulgini’s Late Heroics Propel Lens into Europa League with Dramatic Win Over Sevilla

In a nail-biting finish at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, RC Lens clinched a crucial 2-1 victory against Sevilla FC on Tuesday, securing their place in the Europa League. This dramatic win ensured Lens finished third in Champions League Group B, leaving Sevilla at the bottom with just two points.

The match, pivotal for Lens, saw them take the lead in the 63rd minute. Przemyslaw Frankowski, displaying nerves of steel, converted a penalty that put the French side ahead. This goal came as a result of relentless pressure from Lens, who showcased a blend of tactical acumen and sheer determination.

Sevilla, the Europa League champions from last season, refused to bow down without a fight. In the 79th minute, their efforts paid dividends when Sergio Ramos, a seasoned campaigner known for his clutch moments, equalized from the penalty spot. This goal reinvigorated Sevilla, who then mounted considerable pressure in an attempt to overturn their fortunes.

The final minutes of the game were marked by intense drama, with Sevilla pushing forward in search of a winner. However, it was Lens who had the last laugh. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Angelo Fulgini emerged as the hero for the French side. Fulgini’s goal was a stunning display of composure and skill, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

With this victory, Lens ended their group stage campaign with eight points, narrowly missing out on the second spot to PSV by just one point. Arsenal, leading the group, finished on top with 13 points.

Lens’s advancement to the Europa League marks a significant achievement for the club, highlighting their resilience and tactical prowess. For Sevilla, this loss is a bitter pill to swallow, particularly given their pedigree in European competitions. This game will be remembered for its dramatic climax and the sheer willpower displayed by Lens, who defied the odds to keep their European dream alive.

ISL: FC Goa, Mumbai City FC play out a gritty goalless draw

Goa, 12th December 2023: League leaders FC Goa held Mumbai City FC to a goalless draw at the Fatorda Stadium tonight as Petr Kratky secured a point for the visitors in his first ever game coaching in the Indian Super League (ISL).

The Gaurs began impressively, chasing their first win against the Islanders in their last eight encounters. Carl McHugh, primarily tasked with shielding the FC Goa defence, was on the move forward tonight, unlocking their attackers with key passes near the final third.

A headed attempt at goal in the sixth minute was followed by McGugh placing a perfect pass on the path of Boris Singh. The winger took a shot at Phurba Lachenpa in the 12th minute, but the Mumbai City FC goalkeeper thwarted the threat for the time being.

The home team fell back on their creative attacking duo of Victor Rodriguez and Noah Sadaoui soon afterwards, with the two of them pushing the Mumbai City FC backline behind and carving open spaces to keep Lachenpa on his toes, all the time.

Abdenasser El Khayati, the former Chennaiyin FC star who netted the opener in the Islanders’ 4-0 triumph over Bengaluru FC last week, was eager to get going, with some enterprising moves near the opposition’s box.

However, efforts from neither of the two sides could culminate in a goal-scoring move, with Noah’s shot courtesy of a pass by Rodriguez flying over the posts at the brink of the half-time whistle.

Yoëll van Nieff, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Bipin Singh came on to enable the Islanders to take a more direct approach in the second essay of the game. Van Nieff drew fouls near the box whereas Bipin made some flashy runs on the left flank. Cutting in, he unleashed a shot in the 68th minute, but a disciplined FC Goa defence that has conceded only thrice so far this season, held right to ward off the winger’s effort.

Marquez unrolled the last roll of his dice by substituting Carlos Martinez on for Sadaoui, with a hope of putting numbers inside the box and banking on the Spaniard to make the most of whichever chances came his way. But, it was not the night for that, as Mumbai City FC weathered that and instead applied pressure back by amplifying their efforts to seek the winner.

Key Performer of the Match

Carl McHugh (FC Goa)

The midfielder was the engine for his side at the centre of the park, completing 77% of his passes, making several forward forays to crack open the Mumbai City FC backline and also emerging as an aerial threat inside the Islanders’ box. McHugh created one goal-scoring chance and made two tackles as well.

What’s next for both teams?

FC Goa will travel to face the Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on December 23, whereas Mumbai City FC will meet East Bengal FC at home on December 16.
