Bengaluru FC sign Chinglensana Singh

Bengaluru: Bengaluru FC, on Tuesday, announced the signing of defender Chinglensana ‘Sana’ Singh on a long-term deal. The former ISL champion will be the first addition into the Blues’ squad under Spanish tactician Gerard Zaragoza.

Sana, who last turned out for Hyderabad FC with whom he won the 2020-21 ISL title, terminated his contract with the Nizams to pave the way for a move to the Blues.

“Bengaluru FC has always been a team with a winning identity. The club has won everything there is to win in such a short time, and I was always going to take the chance to be associated with the club. What made the decision easier was the fact that the team wants to succeed by playing a particular brand of football. There is a vision, a blueprint, and I want to be a part of it,” said Sana, speaking on his arrival in Bengaluru.

The 27-year-old footballer from Manipur began his professional career in the I-League with Shillong Lajong in 2015, post which he also made appearances for Delhi Dynamos, FC Goa and Hyderabad FC in the Indian Super League over the last seven years, featuring against the Blues on multiple occasions.

“Sana is one of the best Indian centre-backs with the ball, and that is important to our style of play. He comes with experience and will help us grow the team. I spoke with Sana, conveyed what the team needs, what he can bring to the table and I’ll be honest when I say there was a great connection from our first interaction,” said Zaragoza.

Spending seven years in the top-division of Indian football, Sana has gained heaps of experience and has picked up silverware in that tenure, including a League shield with FC Goa in 2019-20 and the ISL championship with Hyderabad FC.

In addition to being a seasoned club footballer, Sana has represented the Blue Tigers in the U19 age category and the senior team. Since making his debut for the national team in 2021 against Oman, Sana has 11 appearances for India, and was part of the squad that lifted the SAFF Championship for the country under Blues’ skipper Sunil Chhetri’s leadership.

“The BFC dressing room is home to names like Sunil Chhetri and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and to be able to share that space with them is something I am looking forward to,” said Sana.

Bengaluru FC face Chennaiyin FC as they return to Indian Super League action at the Kanteerava Stadium, on February 7th.

Bhubaneswar, January 21, 2024: Chennaiyin FC suffered a 0-1 defeat against Mumbai City FC in their final Group ‘C’ match of the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Sunday.

Hmingthanmawia Ralte (26th minute) scored the sole goal of the game as he headed in a cross from Yoell Van Nieff’s free-kick for the Islanders.

Demonstrating their attacking intent from the outset, Chennaiyin FC started the game on the front foot minutes and came close to scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute.

Rafael Crivellaro played a precise through ball to Connor Shields who managed to get beyond the Mumbai City defence, but his shot was saved by the opposition goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa.

The Marina Machans continued to pose a significant threat and had another opportunity in front of goal in the 18th minute when Crivellaro’s cross was headed just wide by Jordan Murray.

Despite the flurry of attacks from Chennaiyin, it was Mumbai City FC that broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 23rd minute when Hmingthanmawia Ralte converted Yoell Van Nieff’s floating cross in the box with a header following a free kick.

Owen Coyle’s team began the second half with renewed energy and came close to leveling the score just after the break when Crivellaro had two chances in the space of a minute.

The Brazilian’s first attempt was a header from a cross from the right flank followed by a left-footed shot from long range, both of which narrowly missed the target.

Chennaiyin continued their pursuit of the equalizer and in the 59th minute, a pinpoint cross from Shields was met perfectly by Murray but his header was saved by Lachenpa.

The 26-year-old attacker put another accurate ball inside the box, this time for Irfan Yadwad in the 79th minute, but Mumbai City FC’s shot-stopper came to the rescue for his side once again.

With four points from three games, Chennaiyin FC concluded their campaign in the Kalinga Super Cup by finishing second in their group.

In a match filled with excitement and drama, Algeria and Burkina Faso ended their second TotalEnergies Group D match with a 2-2 draw, leaving both teams to share the points. The game, held on Saturday afternoon, was crucial for Algeria after their draw against Angola in their opening match.

Bengaluru’s Super Cup hopes end with late defeat

Bhubaneswar: A late goal by substitute Brison Fernandes (90+3’) ended Bengaluru FC’s hopes of making it out of Group D of the Super Cup, where nothing short of a win against FC Goa was enough for Gerard Zaragoza’s boys at the Kalinga Stadium, on Wednesday.

A combination of injuries (Keziah Veendorp), suspension (Ryan Williams) and international duty (Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Suresh Wangjam) meant the Spanish tactician had to rely on a young, and fairly inexperienced side who gave an impressive account of themselves, only to concede in injury time.

Zaragoza made two changes to the starting lineup that played against Odisha last Friday. Winger Rohit Danu replaced the suspended Williams, while young midfielder Harsh Patre, who has showcased his assuredness in the ISL, was recalled into the eleven to replace the injured skipper Veendorp.

Bengaluru were content to soak the pressure for most parts of the first half, picking their moments on the counter. Javi Hernandez had the Blues’ best chance, when he received the ball on the edge of the box, only to blast his take over.

Zaragoza chose to begin the second half with two changes, bringing young Shivaldo Singh and Rohit Kumar on for Rohit Danu and Harsh, as Bengaluru switched gears in attack. The Blues’ youngsters combined soon after, when Shivaldo charged into the box and cut the ball back for Lalremtluanga Fanai. The midfielder’s shot was on target before Carl McHugh turned up with the block.

Bengaluru grew into the game, and bossed possession when Zaragoza rolled in another change – bringing on twenty-four-year-old Ashish Jha for Sivasakthi, and the change almost proved to be an instant masterstroke. Slipped through on goal by Shivaldo, Jha’s attempted chip over an onrushing Dheeraj Singh while warding off pressure from Odei Onaindia, bounced inches wide of the goal.

The Blues kept making forays in the Goa third, but couldn’t seem to find the finish they so badly were in need of. Instead it was Goa, who against the run of play, found the back of the net when an unmarked Brison rose to head Muhammed Nemil’s cross past Sahil Poonia, giving Manolo Marquez three important points.

Namibia Secures Historic 1-0 Victory Over Tunisia in AFCON Group E Opener

Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire: Namibia pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations history, defeating 2004 champions Tunisia 1-0 in a dramatic Group E opener on Tuesday. The victory, sealed by a late goal from Deon Hotto in the 89th minute, marked a momentous occasion for the southern African nation, giving them an excellent start in the tournament.

The match was a tightly contested affair, with both sides displaying defensive resilience. In a first half that saw few clear-cut chances, Namibia and Tunisia battled for dominance, but neither side could break the deadlock. The Carthage Eagles, despite controlling possession, struggled to find a way through Namibia’s well-organized defense led by Ivan Kamberipa.

Tunisian captain Youssef Msakni tested Namibian goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua with a curled shot, but the Brave Warriors’ disciplined approach kept the Tunisian attacks at bay. As the game progressed, Tunisia’s frustration grew, while Namibia maintained their focus and tactical discipline.

The breakthrough for Namibia came in the dying moments of the match. Hotto capitalized on a long ball over the defense, showing great pace and composure to slot the ball past Tunisian goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said. His second goal was disallowed for offside, but the single goal was enough to secure a historic win.

Namibia’s victory, their first in Africa Cup of Nations history, came in their tenth game in the competition (D2 L7). The win places them at the top of Group E with three points, as South Africa prepares to play Mali in the group’s other match.

For Tunisia, the defeat is a significant setback, continuing their trend of failing to win their opening games in the last five AFCONs. The Carthage Eagles will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming match against Mali on January 20, while Namibia faces regional rivals South Africa on January 21.

This shock victory over one of Africa’s football giants not only gives Namibia a good chance of progressing from Group E but also sends a strong message to other teams in the tournament about their capabilities and determination.
