Our performance at the Tokyo Games is a huge confidence booster for us,” says Indian Women’s Hockey Midfielder Salima Tete

New Delhi, 07 September 2021: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team fought tooth and nail against some of the top teams in the world at the Tokyo Olympics in July-August 2021. They made history when they defeated the three-time Olympic Gold Medallists Australia 1-0 in the Quarter-Final and played in their first-ever Olympic Semi-Final against Argentina. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team Midfielder Salima Tete, who played an integral role in India’s brilliant performance at the Olympics, expressed that even though the Indian Women’s Team couldn’t finish on the podium, they have shown signs of a bright future.

“Our performance in Tokyo is slowly starting to sink in now. We were really dejected when we lost to Great Britain in the Bronze Medal match, but now we are seeing the positives from the tournament. We may not have won a Medal, but we have certainly gained a lot of confidence from the way we played in Tokyo and it’s definitely going to help us to grow as a team and produce much better results in the future,” said the 19-year-old.

Tete added that she feels blessed to have received an opportunity to play in an Olympic Games at a very young age.

“The Olympic Games is the biggest tournament for any sportsperson and I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity of performing for my country at the biggest of stages. I have learned a lot by playing in high-pressure situations and I am certainly going to use my learnings in the upcoming competitions. One learns a lot when one is against the best and we are very happy with the way we gave a tough fight to each of our opponents in the knock-out stage of the Tokyo Games,” said the Midfielder.

When asked about the most important things that helped India perform exceedingly well at the Olympics, Tete said, “We always found a way to push the ball forward and attack our opponents in the Olympics. We created many goal-scoring opportunities and ensured that we utilized our Penalty Corners well. And also we gave everything we had on the pitch and never gave up, no matter what the situation was. The never-give-in attitude helped us to stay in the moment and keep fighting against our opponents until the final whistle was blown.”

All the recognition is great but now we need to start planning for Asian Games 2022,” states Indian Men’s Hockey Skipper Manpreet Singh

New Delhi, 06 September 2021: It’s been a month since the Indian Men’s Hockey Team won the historic Bronze medal by beating Germany 5-4 at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Team Skipper Manpreet Singh believes now it’s time to stop basking in the glory of the achievement in Tokyo and it’s time to reset their focus and start planning for a busy 2022 calendar.

“I think these past few weeks have been great with people showering us with all their love and praises. Now, I feel it’s time we rest our bodies and mind. We have enjoyed all the felicitations, the honour and accolades we received has been overwhelming but now we must start thinking about how to better ourselves for the 2022 calendar,” stated the Captain.

With the all-important Asian Games scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China from 10 to 25 September 2022, the team’s top priority will be to qualify for the Paris Olympics by winning the Gold at Asian Games. “Last time, we ended up with a Bronze and lost out on winning the automatic qualification. We were lucky to have the FIH Olympic qualifying matches in India. But we can’t depend on the same again. The best would be for us to qualify by winning the Asian Games, so it gives us right amount of time to prepare for 2024 Olympics,” he explained.

Manpreet further expressed that this is a new beginning for Indian hockey with both the men and the women’s teams doing well at the Olympics. He believes the support they have garnered following this historic feat will only increase the popularity of the sport. “I truly feel this is a new beginning for Indian hockey. With the women’s team too doing so well at the Olympics, hockey is witnessing the same kind of support it once had. I was told many people from different professions woke up early to see our matches just like they would back in the glory days when Indian hockey fans would stay glued to the radio to hear the commentary.”

“I feel this fanbase we have earned after the Olympics is great for the sport in general and now it is on us to give these fans bigger and better feats to ensure their supports continues and the popularity of hockey grows further,” he concluded.

“FIH Women’s Player of the Year Award 2020-21 nomination is a recognition for all my hard work and sacrifices,” says Indian Women’s Defender Gurjit

New Delhi, 28 August 2021: Dragflick specialist Gurjit Kaur, who was one of the architects of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team’s fourth-place finish at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics 2020, has been nominated for the FIH Women’s Player of the Year Award 2020-21. The 25-year-old defender etched her name in the history of world hockey following her heroics in the Tokyo Olympics Quarter Final match. She scored a match-winning goal from a Penalty Corner in India’s historic 1-0 win over Australia, which earned the Indian Women’s Hockey team a place in their first-ever Semi-Final at the Olympic Games.

Speaking on her nomination for FIH Women’s Player of the Year Award 2020-21, Gurjit expressed, “It’s a huge thing for me to be nominated for the FIH Women’s Player of the Year Award 2020-2021. For an athlete, it’s one of the best things when all your hard work and sacrifices get recognised at a world level, and I am really happy to see my name on that list. It will give me extra motivation to do even better for the team.”

When asked about that decisive goal against Australia, which helped the Indian eves script history at Olympic Games, Gurjit said, “I think that’s my job, and I just did it. My job is to dragflick, and I got a chance, which I converted.”

“No doubt, there is my name on the scoresheet, but that doesn’t mean it was mine alone, it was a team goal. Each one of us contributed to it, from the defence line to midfielders, to strikers, who created the penalty corner, and eventually, it was my responsibility to convert it,” she added.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team missed out on the Olympic Medal by a whisker, having lost to Great Britain in the Bronze Medal Play-Off match. However, the Amritsar-born player feels that there are a lot of positives to take from this dream campaign. She said, “Even though we missed out on winning the medal by a whisker, there are a lot of positives to take from this dream campaign.”

“People have started watching us, and I am sure our performance will inspire young girls to take up hockey. The Tokyo Olympics 2020 marks the beginning of a new era of Indian hockey. We have gained a lot of confidence, we have become fearless, and going forward it will certainly help us perform well in major tournaments. I also hope we get the same amount of love and respect going forward,” she concluded.

Our experienced Midfielders group will be crucial for India’s success in the upcoming years: Indian Hockey Team Midfielder Pradhan

Bengaluru, 22 September 2020: Indian Women’s Hockey Team Midfielder Nikki Pradhan has been part of many memorable moments for the national side which includes the Gold Medal win at the Women’s Asia Cup 2017, victory at the FIH Women’s Series Finals 2019 and booking a place at the Tokyo Olympics after defeating USA at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers last year. Pradhan, who has played over 100 matches for the Indian team, recalled her time at the Bariatu Girls’ Hockey Center in Ranchi, where she learned the techniques of hockey.

“The time I spent at the Bariatu Girls’ Hockey Center is always going to remain special for me. I picked up the sport of hockey at a young age, but I learned most of the techniques of the sport at the Hockey Centre when I joined in 2005. Practicing and learning at the centre laid a good foundation for me and I kept building on the skills I developed there as I moved forward in my career. I was very fortunate to take up hockey seriously at a place like the Bariatu Girls’ Hockey Center,” said the 26-year-old.

Pradhan expressed that India’s present experienced Midfielders group will hold the key in the big tournaments in the upcoming years.

“We are very lucky to have so many Midfielders in the Indian team, who have already played 100 matches for the national side. Experience is a huge factor when it comes to big tournaments like the Olympics and if we play at our hundred percent then we can win against any team. Experience teaches one to be calm and think clearly under pressure and therefore our experienced Midfielders group will be the key to our success in the upcoming years,” said Pradhan.

The 26-year-old, who became the first woman hockey player from Jharkhand to represent India in the Olympics in 2016, spoke about her experience at the quadrennial event.

“It was fantastic to take part in the Rio Olympics. Just being around the top athletes from all over the world was something else. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team made it to the Olympics after 36 years so it was a huge moment for us. However, it was disappointing to come back without a victory. But it didn’t deter us from trying harder and Hockey India has shown tremendous faith in us over all the good and bad times. Hockey India through SAI, State Governments and State Units have constructed the best pitches for practice and international matches and instilled the belief in us that we can take on any top side in the world. When we have a tremendous backing of our own federation, then it inspires us to perform every time we step on the field,” said the Midfielder.

“Feels good to be back with the rest of the group,” says Indian Men’s Hockey Team Striker Mandeep Singh

Bengaluru, 21 September 2020: Indian Men’s Hockey Team striker Mandeep Singh is excited to be back on the pitch and go about basic activities to improve fitness after recovering from Covid-19. He was the first player to be admitted in the hospital in Bengaluru and Mandeep recalled the experience as being one of the toughest times of his life.

According to Mandeep, what helped was constant team-support and reassurances from Hockey India during this entire phase. “I think we had read and heard so much about the pandemic being a deadly disease, the first few days was stressful and anxious after testing positive for the virus. Although I have been in some of the most difficult match-situations as a professional hockey player, I had never felt this stressed. I was never taken away in an ambulance, never been seriously injured either. So, this phase was a new experience for me but I am really grateful to the constant team-support and Hockey India officials speaking with us individual to assure everything will be taken care of. After recovering, they (Hockey India) even gave us an option to return home to take a break if we felt like it but we wanted to stay back and rejoin the rest of the group,” explained the young forward who scored maximum goals for Team India in 2019 season.

He further emphasized that they have a good support system around them which is why returning to activities has been a smooth transition. “We have a very good trainer in Robin Arkel and he knows exactly how much to push us. We are taking only 50-60 per cent of the regular work load at the moment and have just one session per day. Chief Coach Graham Reid is also constantly monitoring how we feel during a session. It feels good to be back with the rest of the group and I feel relieved to be fine and recovered fully,” he said.

With FIH Hockey Pro League restarting from tomorrow, Mandeep feels it’s good that sporting activities have begun around the world. “Over the weekend, we watched brilliant IPL matches between Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians and then Delhi Capitals Vs Kings XI Punjab. Though we don’t follow cricket very closely, it was exciting to watch these two matches. It brings a very positive energy especially when everything else has been halted due to the pandemic. I think watching live sports on TV will also give people who have endured a lot over the past six months, a reason to take their minds off their troubles for some time and enjoy the action. As a team we will also be watching the Germany Vs Belgium hockey match tomorrow,” he added.

Eager to watch the FIH Hockey Pro League tie between Germany-Belgium this month, says Harmanpreet Singh

Bengaluru, 02 September 2020: The Indian Men’s Hockey Team defender and drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh feels the forthcoming FIH Hockey Pro League matches which resume on 22 September 2020 in Germany will provide insights into the variations and combinations the European teams will display.

The League will recommence with powerhouses Germany and Belgium facing-off against each-other. “Both these teams are really good and of course we are eager to watch them play and we will be following these matches closely because it will give us insights into their variations, any new combinations they are using,” stated the drag-flicker who is currently part of the on-going National Coaching Camp in SAI, Bengaluru.

Harmanpreet, who Captained the India to victory at the FIH Olympic Test Event in Tokyo last year, feels the Indian Team has plenty of time to return to their formidable form and watching these FIH Pro League matches will help them implement changes to their tactics and be prepared before they begin their FIH Pro League campaign in April next year. “I feel we have enough time to prepare. Since we will be following these teams closely, we will be able to make timely implements into our game,” expressed Harmanpreet further adding that the Coaching Staff ensuring the players maintained their fitness levels over the past five months when training and coaching activities were halted due to nation-wide lockdowns, will be a key factor to bounce back.

“The good thing that happened during the past five months was the Coaching Staff particularly our Scientific Advisor Robin Arkel kept a close watch on our fitness and diet. Even when we were on a break, we had a schedule to follow. I think these factors will help us bounce back,” added the defender who recently took part in an online webinar where he interacted with over 50 students and faculty members of a University in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

“It was the first time I was doing something like this online. I enjoyed sharing my knowledge about the game with the students. They had many questions on shaping and nurturing talent from the age of 12-13 years of age and they were also keen on understanding how one adapts to playing on synthetic turf after being used to grass surface. The session was interactive and I was particularly happy to know that the students followed our team’s performances closely,” recalled Harmanpreet who engaged in this online activity on Major Dhyanchand’s 115th birth centenary on Saturday 29th August 2020.

Sunita Lakra retires from International Hockey

“Today is a very emotional day for me as I have decided to retire from International Hockey. I had been part of this wonderful journey with the Indian Women’s Hockey Team since 2008 and through this journey we have seen many ups and downs but we remained as one unit, giving each other the strength and motivation to remain strong and fight all the odds to excel and bring laurels to the country.

I was very fortunate to have played at the Rio Olympics in 2016, India’s first appearance in over 3 decades. Many people told me it was a historic moment for women’s hockey in India but I always believed this team can achieve so much more. As much as I wish to be part of the Indian team as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, my knee injuries have cut short my dream. I have been told by the doctors that I would be requiring another knee surgery in the coming days and I am unsure how long it would take before I fully recover. Pursuant to my treatment, I will play domestic hockey and play for NALCO who have supported my career by providing me a job.

I have come a long way in the sport and I carry with me some great memories with the Indian team who have stood strong by my side and the girls were always my family away from home.

I would like to thank my teammates, Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne and the team support staff. My heartfelt thanks to Hockey India who ensured I was given the best treatment during my injury and I am grateful for their unparalleled support to women’s hockey. I would also like to thank Ministry, Youth Affairs & Sports (GOI), Sports Authority of India and Odisha State Government for constantly encouraging us and providing us with support. My family, my husband and friends back in Odisha have been my strongest supporters and I wish to thank them for helping me pursue my passion for hockey. I could not have come this far without their encouragement.

Lastly, I wish all my teammates the very best as they begin the New Year with a new goal to win a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I will miss being part of this fantastic team!”

Awards and recognition is a big motivation to excel, says Indian Women’s Hockey Team Skipper Rani

New Delhi, 12 December 2019: The year 2018 has been eventful for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team as they not only booked their ticket to 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where for the first time in the history of the game the Indian Women Team will make back-to-back appearances in the most prestigious sporting event, but the lead up to the Qualifier also saw them amass creditable victories against quality sides like Spain, Ireland, Japan, China, Korea, England among other countries.

Their feat has brought several accolades, awards and recognition in this past one year which the team Skipper Rani sees as a new era for women’s hockey in the country. “The fact that people never expected any great result from the Indian Women’s Team always bothered us. No one expected us to win, just a participation would bring satisfaction. But now I see that attitude change towards the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. We have proved with our performances in 2018 and 2019 that we can achieve greatness too,” stated Rani on the sidelines of the FICCI India Sports Awards 2019.

While winnings awards and being recognised spurs her to do better, Rani also sees this as a positive step towards drawing more attention to Indian Women’s Hockey. “Personally this award is a big boost for me to do better and contribute to my team’s performance. I also think this kind of recognition highlights Indian Women’s Hockey among a different genre of people who are not necessarily hockey followers. I believe this will only help the sport grow. I would love to see the Indian Team inspire more women take up the sport professionally,” she added.

The Indian Team is currently in Bengaluru for the ongoing National Coaching Camp till 15 December 2019. After a three-week break for Christmas and New Year, the core group will return to camp on 5 January 2020 to prepare for the New Zealand Tour. “One of the primary focus for us will be on fitness and recovery. While the plan is to play top quality matches against good teams in the lead up to the Olympics, all of us need to manage our body and mind well. We will need to peak at the right time and going by the weather in Tokyo around the time of the Olympics, I believe fitness will play a huge part in how teams fair,” she added.

Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team win 3-Nations Tournament despite 1-2 loss to Australia

Canberra (Australia), 08 December 2019: The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team on Sunday won the 3-Nations Tournament in Australia as they finished top of the points table despite suffering their first loss of the competition. The Indian team lost 1-2 to hosts Australia in their fourth and final match of the competition which saw India’s Gagandeep Kaur score in the 53rd minute to cancel out Abigail Wilson’s strike in the 15th minute. However, the Australian youngster scored yet again in the 56th minute to give her team a 2-1 win.

It was a difficult first period for the Indian team as they were constantly put under pressure by the hosts. The visitors had some chances of their own inside the first 15 minutes but the chance of the first quarter fell to the hosts, who managed to make the most of it. It was in the 15th minute that Australia were awarded a Penalty Corner, and it was Abigail Wilson who stepped up for the hosts to make it 1-0.

India tried to make up ground in the second quarter, but some resolute defending by the home team meant that the visitors could not equalize inside the second quarter. The Indians had a Penalty Corner in the 22nd minute, but could not force it on target. Another Penalty Corner for India in the 26th minute saw Australia’s Hannah Astbury make a diving save to help her team retain their one-goal lead. Two minutes later, Australia had a glorious chance of extending their lead to two goals through a Penalty Stroke, but India’s Goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam made a fine save to keep the score down to 0-1 at the half-time break.

A similar story unfolded in the third quarter with neither side able to score. Both the teams had chances through Penalty Corners in the third period, but some good defending by both the sides meant that the outcome of the match would be decided in the last period. India had a couple of Penalty Corners in the third period but were denied by Australia’s Astbury.

However, the start of the fourth quarter was different for India as they put the hosts under pressure from the start, and that resulted in the visitors winning themselves a Penalty Corner in the 53rd minute. It was India’s Gagandeep Kaur who stepped up to take the execution, and scored past Astbury to equalize for India. But India could not stay on level terms for too long as three minutes later, it was Australia’s Abigail Wilson who scored her second goal of the match through a Penalty Corner to snatch a 2-1 lead. India tried to equalize for the second time during the remaining four minutes, but could not make the most of their chances as Australia registered a 2-1 win.

Despite suffering their first loss of the 3-Nations Tournament, the Indian team won the competition by finishing top of the points table with a tally of seven points from four matches, ahead of hosts Australia on goal difference, with New Zealand finishing third with only three points from their four matches.

“Grateful to be ending 2019 with a very positive mindset,” says Indian Men’s Hockey Team’s drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh

Bhubaneswar, 06 November 2019: With the year coming to a close, it has been a positive one for Indian Men’s Hockey team’s drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh, who made a comeback to the side when he took part in the team’s Tour of Belgium and then the crucial FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Odisha held in November. With a return of two goals and some brilliant defending, the drag-flicker returned to the side with some impressive performances, and helped his team qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“I think 2018 was a relatively tough year for me because I was not getting into the side, and missed some major tournaments. It was a really difficult experience but these tough phases transform you into a better player, and a wiser human being. I realized that I needed to work on some areas after I had sustained a major injury, but I am really grateful to be ending 2019 with a very positive mindset, and looking forward to achieving great things with this bunch of players in the next 7-8 months,” said the 29-year-old.

“It was a journey of constant hard work on the ground and in the gym, and I am really pleased with the way I have been able to make a comeback. The most important thing for me was to make sure that I contribute to the team performing to the best of our abilities, and I think we are gradually getting to a level which can help us compete for the top prizes. It is an important year in the lives of a lot of players in the world because we have the Olympic Games this upcoming year, and I am really looking forward to making my country proud,” added the drag-flicker.

Currently in Bhubaneswar for the Indian Men’s Hockey Team’s Training and Conditioning Camp, Rupinder says that the focus on the current camp has been on individual improvements rather than plotting out strategies for the FIH Hockey Pro League or Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. “We had these four weeks of camp to focus on our individual development, improvement and growth. The coaching staff has been putting in all the hard work to make sure that all the 34 players in the National Camp are working on specific areas of concern for each player – starting from the basics of the game. It is a great process because this is the only time we get to focus on individual players and improving skills, in the lead up to the Olympics. The next camp will be aimed at getting ready for the FIH Hockey Pro League, and then we will focus on strategies to face Netherlands,” said Rupinder.

Having made his debut in 2008, Rupinder was also a part of the Indian side that finished 8th at the Rio Olympics 2016, and the 29-year-old recalled the experience, “It was a great feeling to have finally represented the country at the Olympic Games. It had always been my dream to play at the Olympics, and the feeling I got playing in that atmosphere was just surreal. It is true that we did not have the best of tournaments, but that experience is something that can help us next year in Tokyo. We have improved a lot in these four years, and I believe that our team is one of the top teams in the world right now,” said the Indian who hails from Faridkot, Punjab.

The ongoing Training and Conditioning Camp of the Indian Men’s Hockey team will conclude in Bhubaneswar this Sunday, after which the team will go on a three-week break before joining the National Camp back at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium from 29th December 2019 onwards to prepare for their FIH Hockey Pro League 2020 campaign.

Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team face New Zealand in their opening match of the 3-Nations Tournament on Wednesday

Canberra (Australia), 03 December 2019: An upbeat Indian Junior Women’s Hockey team will aim to start their 3-Nations Tournament campaign with a win when they face New Zealand in their opening match here on Wednesday. The 3-Nations Tournament taking place in the Australian Capital Canberra will see the hosts, New Zealand and India play four matches each from 03 – 08 December 2019. The Indian team, under Coach Baljeet Saini, will be aiming to utilize the much-needed exposure of playing two top teams in different conditions.

The team is scheduled to take part in the AHF Women’s Junior Asia Cup next year to be held in Japan, and Saini is expecting his team to make the most of their opportunities of playing competitive hockey. “Our target in the next year is to perform well at the AHF Women’s Junior Asia Cup which will take place in 2020. This group of players has been training with us for a fair amount of time now, and to have the opportunity of playing in Australia against two top teams is a great way to prepare for the upcoming year,” said Saini.

“We are also hoping that these four matches will give us a good idea of how the team is shaping up in terms of dealing with different scenarios that you face during a match. We have a very talented bunch of players, some of which have even represented the Senior team recently, and I am really looking forward to starting the tournament tomorrow against New Zealand,” said the Coach.

The Indian Junior Women’s Team has not played against New Zealand recently, and the Coach will be keeping his eyes on the Australia – New Zealand fixture on Tuesday to get a better idea of their opponents. “We have not come across New Zealand in any tournaments that we have participated in, in the past 3-4 years. Therefore, I will be watching the opening match between Australia and New Zealand today, and will analyse their style of play, and then speak to my team during our meetings this evening and tomorrow morning before the match. I am expecting a good run of four matches against these two sides, and it will be a good test,” he said.

This really is remarkable and contributes to grow our sport not only in India but in the world also. Our thanks also go to Hockey India for their dedication and efforts to put together an unforgettable event.”

The precision in which the Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 was conducted, and the grandeur of the marquee event drew several accolades from the hockey fraternity worldwide. The unparalleled support by Government of Odisha towards the development of hockey, their vision to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure like none other in the world, and the government’s willingness to invest in the event were some of the key reasons to name the State as the venue for the prestigious event in 2023.

Also, the income-generation potential of the bid submitted by Hockey India will contribute to the development of hockey worldwide, which is the first mission of the International Hockey Federation. Furthermore, we will work closely with Hockey India on the sustainability and legacy aspects of the 2023 FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup.”

Having successfully hosted the 2018 Men’s World Cup here in Bhubaneswar, it was important for Hockey India to raise the bar further and ensure the next event is bigger and better than what world hockey saw in 2018. Hockey India shares an excellent working relationship with the Government of Odisha whose vision for the sport aligns with ours. In terms of economics involved in hosting an event of this magnitude, Government of Odisha’s support was unmatched and I am confident the world will witness yet another incredible World Cup in 2023,” stated Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad, President, Hockey India.

It was also announced in the event, a permanent facility will be constructed near the practice pitch of the Kalinga Stadium for establishment of a High Performance Centre.

Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik expressed his delight at Odisha hosting the 2023 edition of the tournament, “Odisha has always been the cradle of hockey, and with the successful organising of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, we showcased a very different side of our state. We have always had a very passionate crowd which supports the sport of hockey, and with the presence of world-class, top-of-the-line facilities in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, it swells my heart with great pride that Odisha will once again be celebrating the festival of hockey when we host the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup in January 2023.”

The 15,000 plus fans present at the stadium for today’s announcement, roared with excitement when the Hon’ble Chief Minister announced the World Cup would be returning to Odisha in 2023.

Fitness will be a determining factor at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, says Sjoerd Marijne

Bengaluru, 23 November 2019: Back in the Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru for National Coaching Camp, it is business as usual for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team albeit with greater focus now on a podium finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Following a review meeting earlier this week, the team will bank on their ‘fearless attitude’ as they approach the next seven-eight months of preparations for the quadrennial extravaganza.

“The review meeting earlier this week was not all about ‘well done, congratulations’ but it was more about how we almost threw away the second match. I expressed my anger without mincing any words. The way we played the first two quarters in the second match against USA in the Olympic Qualifiers was something we never want to repeat again,” stated Sjoerd Marijne, as he recalled the exchange of views about the team’s performance against USA during the review meeting involving players and support staff.

“A major take away from that match was the team’s ability to fight back. That is the quality I really like about this team. They will never give up and they have on several occasions shown that burning desire to win and to play at home against a strong team calls for a lot of nerves,” he added.

In the coming months the team have a rigorous regime starting with a tour of New Zealand in January 2020. “We have chartered out our plans for the next seven months and we have a clear vision of what we need to improve on and the level we seek to achieve ahead of the Olympics. While we play some very good teams in the lead up to the Olympics where we look forward to achieving consistent performance, it is very important to keep the players’ minds and legs fresh. We have decided to be based out of SAI, Bengaluru all along because this feels like home for us and every minute aspect such as the environment we train in, and support system we have here plays a major factor in our preparations,” Marijne explained.

Countdown to 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Working towards being part of Indian contingent, says Indian Men and Women’s Team Captains

Bengaluru, 24 July 2019: With exactly one year for the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled from 24 July 2020 to 9 August 2020 with Hockey preliminary round events for men and women starting from 25 July 2020, the Indian Men and Women’s team are working towards ensuring they are part of the Indian contingent.

“We have a count down chart and we frequently remind ourselves in team meetings about how many days are left for the qualifying and how many days before the first hockey match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, we are on our toes to qualify,” said Manpreet Singh, Captain of the Indian Men’s Hockey Team.

This constant reminder also provides a boost for players to improve upon their individual game and ensure they are doing everything they can to contribute to the team’s goals. “It’s not just us players but the Coaching staff too remind us about days left for 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the goals we need to achieve ahead of this milestone event. We have set short timelines to work on our grey areas. We have set short-term goals which includes areas to work on in training, how we intend to play against a particular team at the upcoming event such as Olympic Test event, Belgium Tour and what implications this would have on the Qualifying event in November. We have mapped out every detail to ensure we do better than our previous best,” he said.

Another most important aspect is to take care of ourselves and avoid any kind of injuries. In this Olympic cycle we have had key players out of action for nearly 8-10 months and this is something we definitely want to avoid in this crucial year ahead,” added the midfielder who led the team to a win at the FIH Series Finals in Bhubaneswar in June.

Meanwhile, Indian Women’s Team Captain Rani said, “We have all made personal sacrifices to ensure the team is put ahead of everything else and we are working towards one goal which is to qualify for the Olympics. It’s very important for us to reinstate that qualifying for Rio Olympics was not a one-off incident and that hockey fans can expect the women’s team to create good results at major competitions.”

She further added that the recent success of fellow Indian women in other disciplines is an inspiration for her team to exceed expectations. “The recent performances of Hima Das and Dutee Chand proves that Indian women are rising to the occasion and are working towards making India a dominant contingent at the world level. Their performances inspires us too and these are athletes we are in touch with and we often end up sharing notes on our training and competitions. Its important to have such positive results in the build up to our qualification event and we are really hoping to play in front of a home crowd in November as the last time we played in India was in 2012 Olympic Qualifier in New Delhi,” Rani added.

Not worried about who our opponent will be for the Olympic Qualifiers, says India Skipper Manpreet Singh

Bengaluru, 18 July 2019: The next three months will be all about bringing their best hockey to the fore and peaking at the right time to ensure the Indian Men’s Hockey Team seal their berth for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. In this pursuit, the core group has been put under the grind with special focus on their defending abilities. “The next three months is critical for us and whatever we are doing is with focus on sealing our Olympic Qualification in November,” asserted Indian Men’s Team Skipper Manpreet Singh on the sidelines of the on-going National Coaching Camp in SAI, Bengaluru.

The team is preparing for the forthcoming Olympic Test event starting 17 August where they will play New Zealand, Malaysia and hosts Japan. This event will be followed by India’s Tour of Belgium in September. “The good thing working under Graham Reid is that he has closely followed India’s performance over the years and he understands our game well so in that sense he isn’t changing our style and continues to reinforce that our attack and counter-attacks are our biggest strengths but the focus of our training is to ensure we are defending and finishing well with continued emphasis on speed and fitness,” Manpreet opines.

Though there are some injuries in the team with experienced midfielder Chinglensana Singh still recovering from an ankle fracture, while forward Lalit Upadhyay is recovering from a back strain and youngster Sumit undergoing rehab following an injury during the FIH Series Finals Bhubaneswar, Manpreet believes there are enough options in the core group who can soak up the pressure of International hockey. “These players are missed in the team and we are hopeful they will be fully fit by the Olympic Qualifiers. But I believe we have good players in the core group with International experience who can step up and show their worth for a place in the team by giving their 100 per cent in the Camp,” Manpreet said.

He further added that it’s important for the team to not come under pressure and just focus on their own performance. “Our main priority right now is to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games but at the same time we don’t want to come under pressure and be worried about who our opponent is going to be. Our focus right now is to work on our shortcomings and improve collectively as a team,” he said.
