Indian Men and Women Hockey Teams return from Rio Olympics

Delhi, 25 August 2016: The Indian hockey teams arrived back in the country after a strong and historic performance at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The women team was making its first appearance at the Games since 1980 and went into the Olympics, the lowest ranked of all the teams. They held Japan in a draw in the opening fixture to take their first points of the tournament.

The Men’s team also created history by qualifying for the quarter finals. The Indian team were the only team to beat the eventual Gold medallists Argentina and also defeated Ireland in the group stage and drew with Canada, besides going down by very slim margins to Germany and Netherlands. In the quarter finals they went down to Silver medallists Belgium.

Speaking after arriving back in the country, Indian Men Team Captain, PR Sreejesh said, “For all of us the Olympic has been a great eye opener and a huge life experience. The people of Rio were unbelievably hospitable to us and it was a brilliant setting for the Games. As professionals we always dream of representing our country at the highest level and the Olympics is the highest. I’m proud of the team for the way we played. Barring some small moments, our performance was very good. Now we have to focus on correcting all the things we got wrong and believe in ourselves for the future.”

Chief Coach Indian Men Team Roelant Oltmans also added, “The results were satisfactory if not ideal according to our preparations. But, looking back we can see that in every game we pushed our opponents to the very end. This is a team of high quality. Sometimes the results don’t accurately display the performance. In this case, I think the team would have learnt a lot. So have we as coaching staff. The team deserves a short break, and then, very soon, it will be back to the grind.”

Indian Women Team Captain Sushila Chanu said, “It was always a dream for us to represent India at the Olympics. There was a fear of getting overawed by the occasion, but we didn’t and I am proud of the team for that. Ours is a young team and we have already made a small mark in the world stage. Now we have to try and get better and make that mark more and more visible.”

Narsingh Yadav banned for 4 years, won’t take part in Olympics

Narsingh Yadav baanned by  Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on the urgent appeal filed by World Antidoping Agency (WADA). In a special session at Rio de Janeiro, a jury heard both sides yesterday between  13:00 and 17:00 and upheld the application of WADA which is banning Narsingh from wrestling for 4 years on doping charges.

WADA said that  Narsingh and NADA failed to prove Narsingh’s innocence in the case and hence all competitive results obtained by Narsingh Yadav from and including 25 June 2016 shall be disqualified, with all resulting consequences (including forfeiture of medals, points and prizes).

Rio de Janeiro, 18 August 2016 – The ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 has rendered its decision in the arbitration between the World Antidoping Agency (WADA), the Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav and the National Anti-doping Agency of India (NADA). WADA filed an urgent application before the CAS ad hoc Division to challenge the decision of NADA India to exonerate Narsingh Yadav following two positive anti-doping tests with methandienone on 25 June and 5 July 2016. The athlete asserted that he was the victim of sabotage (food/drink tampering) by another person. WADA requested that a 4-year period of ineligibility be imposed on the athlete. The CAS Panel in charge of this matter heard the parties and their representatives today between 13:00 and 17:00. At 18:45 today, the parties were informed that the application was upheld, that Narsingh Yadav was sanctioned with a four-year ineligibility period starting today and that any period of provisional suspension or ineligibility effectively served by the athlete before the entry into force of this award shall be credited against the total period of ineligibility to be served. Furthermore, all competitive results obtained by Narsingh Yadav from and including 25 June 2016 shall be disqualified, with all resulting consequences (including forfeiture of medals, points and prizes). The CAS Panel did not accept the argument of the athlete that he was the victim of sabotage and noted that there was no evidence that he bore no fault, nor that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional. Therefore the standard 4-year period of ineligibility was imposed by the Panel. The full award with the grounds will be published on the CAS website as soon as it will be available.

Sakshi Malik gives India first medal at Rio Olympics

Sakshi Malik wins first medal for India at Rio Olympics, when she grabbed Bronze medal in Women’s freestyle 58kg wrestling. She won 4 matches and lost 1 to win this coveted medal for her country.

Her style of play is a bit different from others as she observe her opponent in first period and doesn’t hesitate if she looses points in first period. but in second period we see all together different wrestler as she become too attacking in last minute of play. Most of her matches she won with this strategy in Rio.

In her first Qualification match she faced Johanna Mattsson from Sweden, Mattson is 2014 European champion i 60kg and bronze medalist in world championship in 2010, Sakshi defeated her in last 5 seconds after getting 2 points in last 3 seconds. In Round of 16 match Sakshi played against Mariana Cherdivara from Republic of Moldova, Shakshi was trailing against her till last moment by and won the match  on getting highest point from 1 move rule after match is ties 5-5 at the end of period 2.

In quarterfinals she played against Valeria Koblova from Russia, to whom Sakshi lost 2-9, but as Koblova reached finals of 58kg category, Sakshi got another shot at bronze medal and played Repechage round 2 against Pürevdorjiin Orkhon from Mongolia and won the match 3-1.

Archery – India’s Chances in Rio Olympics 2016

Lets start event wise prediction of India’s medals hope and where they will finish

First of all we have Men’s Individual ranking event. In this India is represented by Atanu Das,  he is currently ranked 22 in Men’s recurve rankings. So its highly unlikely that he will finish in Top 10 in finals. He would face tough competition from archers from South Korea, Netherlands, USA. Other Indian archers failed to qualify for Olympics  such as Jayanta Talukdar (ranked 13) and Mangal Singh Champia (ranked 32). Atanu Das will be lone flag bearer in men’s Archery for India in this years Olympics

In Women’s Individual ranking event, Deepika Kumari is one of the world’s best archer and is currently ranked 12 in world, her chance of winning a medal in individual events are higher, but her main competition will come from 3 South Korean.  If she able to defeat any of the Korean’s then we assume that she would win a medal in Individual category.

In same category, Bombayla Devi is also representing India and is currently 69 in recurve rankings. She has to work hard, but chances are very less for her getting a medal. Laxmirani Majhi is in good form and currently ranked 15th in word rankings. She can complement Deepika in individuals, but we don’t think she will be bringing any individual medals for India.

The best chances of India lies in Women’s Team event and we think that India could bring Silver medal in this event. a trio of Deepika, Bombayla and Laxmirani Majhi will be representing India in this category and with just 11 other teams in this event, India’s chances of winning a medal is really optimistic.

So our Prediction is that India would bring at least 1 Silver medal in team event and if luck favors us  then another medal in individual’s.
