Squash: Rodriguez Battles Past Waller To Ensure Top Four Seeds Reach Motor City Open Semi-Finals

Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez battled past No.7 seed Adrian Waller in a hard-fought four-game encounter to ensure that the top four seeds all progressed to the Sturbridge Capital Motor City Open semi-finals.

In the pair’s first meeting on the PSA Tour since 2014, it was No.3 seed Rodriguez who showed his wealth of experience to claim key points at crucial junctures in the match, in what was an otherwise even contest.

After trading points in the opening game on their way up to a 9-9 scoreline, it was Waller who blinked first, hitting a backhand volley drop into the tin when well placed to win the rally. Rodriguez took the subsequent game ball at the first time of asking and again moved away towards the latter stages of the second to double his lead.

As Rodriguez began to lose his lines early in the third, Waller took the initiative, closing off his opponent’s cross-court options and punishing any balls which fell short in the court. The Englishman reduced the deficit by taking the third 11-9 and went toe-to-toe with Rodriguez up to 7-7 in the fourth. However, from there, it was the 38-year-old who claimed four consecutive points to close out the match and walk off court after 56 minutes of action.

After the match, Rodriguez said: “He has been playing very good recently, he is very solid and he likes to play a high pace and low on the front wall. He reached my cross-courts very easily so I was very aware of my cross-courts today. Overall though, I think I played much better than yesterday, the pace and accuracy of my shots were much better.

“I think in the third game I was leaving the ball too much in the middle of the service box on his forehand, and he was hitting winners from there. Credit to him because he fought back and he was next to me in the score in every game, but at the end of each game I managed to do something different and that was the difference in the match.”

Rodriguez’s opponent in the last four, Paul Coll, didn’t have it all his own way in his clash against lucky loser Rui Soares, despite eventually prevailing in straight games.

The World No.3 started the match strongly, finding a consistent length on the traditional court at the Birmingham Athletic Club and racing into a 9-5 lead. However, a broken string on Coll’s racket proved a catalyst for a Soares comeback. The World No.60 rattled off five straight points to hold a game ball, but Coll remained composed to eventually fight-back and take the subsequent tie-break by a 15-13 scoreline.

The New Zealand No.1 continued to trade points with the winner-heavy Soares early in the second, but moved through the gears at the business end of the game to double his lead. From there, the physical efforts exerted by Soares earlier in the match started to tell, with Coll happy to pin his opponent to the back two corners before cutting the ball in short, eventually finishing off the match after 35 minutes of action.

“Rui was a good with the racket, he hit a few winners, and I left the ball short on a few too many occasions,” Coll said following his victory. “I wanted to focus on playing how I wanted to play throughout the tournament and keep building on yesterday.

“I was up 9-5 in the first and I was a little annoyed that I let him back in, I just had to sort of keep my focus after that. I got a bit sloppy there after I broke my string and I lost concentration and let him back in. He’s got good racket skills, so I had to be on my mettle.”

Meanwhile, No.1 seed Diego Elias continued his quest for a fourth consecutive title thanks to a commanding victory over No.6 seed Nicolas Mueller.

The ‘Peruvian Puma’ flew out of the blocks, unsettling Mueller in a string of fast-paced rallies and racing into an early 6-1 lead, which was subsequently converted into the first game.

Although Mueller threw everything at his opponent in the second, including an eye-catching behind-the-back shot which drew applause from those in attendance, it was Elias who kept his cool at the business end of the second to double his advantage. From there, Elias moved from strength to strength, forcing the Swiss player into some brutal movements and taking the third 11-5 to record his 12th consecutive win at the Motor City Open.

After booking his spot in the last four, Elias said: “I’m very happy to win again today in three. It was a very tough match, very fast-paced. With Nicky it is always fun to play him and get through.

“It’s always difficult if you give him the first few points in games like that, so I just wanted to start really strongly and I’m very happy I did that.”

Former finalist at the Motor City Open, Fares Dessouky, will be the man charged with trying to break Elias’ incredible winning streak in Detroit after he claimed an impressive straight-game victory over compatriot and No.5 seed Mohamed ElSherbini.

The World No.15 dropped just 15 points on his way to an 11-3, 11-8, 11-4 victory in just 33 minutes of action.

“I’m happy to be in the semi-finals again because I love this tournament,” Dessouky said after the match. “ElSherbini is a very good friend of mine and he is playing unbelievably well these days.

“It was a very tricky match so I had to keep my focus and I am happy with the way I played today. A quick start is very important in any match, but especially when playing an Egyptian because it will be tight and you never know what will happen the next point. You have to keep pushing hard until the match is done.”

Super Six Day 2 Round-up: South Africa, Australia register big wins while Bangladesh overcome Nepal

Australia blanked England while South Africa and Bangladesh showed their bowling prowess with mighty wins over Zimbabwe and USA respectively. In the 16th-place play-off, Afghanistan fought off a spirited USA side to win a low-scoring thriller.

Hugh Weibgen and Callum Vidler starred for Australia in their huge win over England on the second day of Super Six matches at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024. Weibgen smashed a brilliant hundred while Vidler picked four wickets to help Australia gain a positive start to the Super Six round.

In Potchefstroom, things went south for Zimbabwe quickly with Kwena Maphaka putting on a masterclass with the new ball. The left-arm quick finished with his second five-wicket haul in the tournament before the South African openers once again flaunted their stroke-making to seal a big victory.

Bangladesh encountered a few hiccups in their win over Nepal, but saw players from the bench step in to make a significant impact in the game in what would be a huge plus for the side.

Outside of the Super Six fixtures, in the 13-16th place play-offs, Afghanistan staved off the USA side that refused to go down without a fight. Even with a low total on board, USA gave it their all to take the game to the final over.

Australia beat England by 110 runs (DLS method) in Kimberley

Australia 266/6 (50 overs) v England 104 (16.5 overs)

Left-arm spinner and all-rounder Theo Wylie came into the side and delivered for England with a remarkable four-wicket haul, effectively stalling Australia’s charge in Kimberley after England chose to put them in to bat during the Super Six fixture of the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024.

Australia’s key batters, Hugh Weibgen and Harry Dixon, displayed their prowess, with Weibgen scoring a stunning century to capitalise on his excellent form in the tournament. Following the early loss of Sam Konstas to Sebastian Morgan in the very first over, Dixon and Weibgen combined forces to construct a solid partnership at a commendable pace.

It was the introduction of Wylie, the seventh bowler used by England by the 19th over, that finally provided the breakthrough they needed. The left-arm spinner removed the well-set Dixon for 53 with the slog-sweep being caught at deep mid-wicket.

England enjoyed double success in the same Wylie over when wicketkeeper Jack Carney took a terrific catch to dismiss Harjas Singh.

Weibgen and Ryan Hicks then worked to revive the Australian innings, but England’s spinners once again proved effective. Leg-spinner Tazeem Ali, who had been consistently outstanding for England throughout the tournament, cleaned up Hicks for 19, breaking a threatening partnership.

Wylie delivered a crucial blow by dismissing the dangerous Tom Campbell before he could inflict much damage. However, Weibgen found the support he needed from Oliver Peake. The two combined to compile a partnership of 66 runs in just 44 balls, boosting Australia’s scoring rate.

Weibgen, the skipper, reached an impressive century during this partnership and was only dismissed in the 48th over when Wylie struck for the fourth time. In the final few overs, Raf Macmillan and Peake added a few more runs, including 20 runs off the last over, allowing Australia to finish on a total of 266 for six.

In response, Callum Vidler propelled Australia into a commanding position with an exceptional spell during the Powerplay. The pacer dismissed Wylie, who was opening the batting, in his first over, and later cleaned up the aggressive Ben McKinney just after the England captain had hit him for a six.

Hamza Shaikh and Noah Thain fell victim to short deliveries as Vidler claimed his fourth wicket within his first five overs, reducing England to a precarious 60 for four. Unfortunately, play was halted due to rain and lightning immediately after this, leading to the players leaving the field.

When play resumed, England’s revised target was 215 in 24 overs. Things unravelled quickly when Tom Straker and Macmillan ran through the middle and lower-order post the break.

From 60 for four, England were down to 75 for seven. Charlie Allison nailed a few big hits, but Straker and Macmillan kept going, reducing England to nine down in 16 overs before Campbell took the final wicket to bowl England out for 106.

With a massive 110-run win (by DLS method), Australia start off their Super Six stage with a huge win. They take on West Indies next on Friday while England will play Zimbabwe a day after. Australia, with six points, are now at the top of Group 2 standings of the Super Six stage.

Australia captain and Player of the Match Hugh Wiebgen said that he was happy with a near-perfect performance from his side.

“We batted really well upfront with Dixon stepping up and I could carry on in the middle overs. I thought 266 was a good total. Everyone knows their role very well in the side. I think in the first couple of games, we went ahead of ourselves a little bit. Today we just gave ourselves a bit more time, starting off slow, knowing we could cash in at the end. Vidler is a superstar. He’ll go very far. It’s great to watch him in full flow.”

Bangladesh beat Nepal by five wickets in Bloemfontein

Nepal 169 (49.5 overs) v Bangladesh 170/5 (25.2 overs)

At Mangaung Oval, Nepal struggled to post a competitive total after choosing to bat first against Bangladesh. Rohanat Doullah Borson and Sheikh Paevez Jibon combined to capture seven wickets as Nepal were bundled out for 169.

Despite Bangladesh striking three times in the Powerplay with the wickets of Bipin Rawal, Aakash Tripathi, and Arjun Kamal, Nepal managed to recover from the early setbacks, mainly due to the efforts of skipper Dev Khanal and Bishal Bikram.

The pair steadily accumulated runs without resorting to aggressive strokes. Bangladesh were compelled to make several bowling changes, and it was the part-time off-spin of opening batter Jishan Alam, brought in for this game, that eventually broke their partnership.

Alam induced a catch at short cover to dismiss Khanal, who had moved across to play through the off-side. Off-spinner Jibon further deepened Nepal’s troubles by dismissing Gulshan Jha and Deepak Bohara in consecutive overs.

Towards the end, Subhash Bhandari contributed a few crucial runs, allowing Nepal to reach a total of 169. Borson, who had previously shone in warm-up games with a hat-trick, concluded with impressive figures of four for 19. Jibon, who took three pivotal wickets during the middle overs, returned with excellent figures of 10-2-34-3.

Bangladesh started off the chase in style with Alam smashing Aakash Chand for a four and a six in the second over. The opener continued to attack, reaching an impressive 45 runs from just 32 deliveries within the first 10 overs, firmly placing Bangladesh in the driver’s seat.

Subash Bhandari broke the opening stand when he had Rahman Shibli slogging to long-on for 16. Chowdhury Md Rizwan revealed his intentions early by smashing Dipesh Kandal for a four followed by a six, but his innings was short-lived with Bhandari getting him out stumped in the next over.

Bhandari continued to shine, securing his third wicket in his fourth over when Jishan Alam’s aggressive shot found the hands of the fielder stationed at long-off. Bangladesh were reduced to 92 for three, putting them in a slight spot of bother.

Nevertheless, Ariful Islam and Ahrar Amin forged a valuable partnership that pushed the team’s total to 137. It was Bhandari’s fourth that pegged Bangladesh back again, the off-spinner coming around the wicket to bowl a quicker arm-ball that flattened Amin’s stumps. A fifth followed for Bhandari soon after with the in-form Shihab James dismissed for a duck while attempting a big hit against the spinner.

Ariful kept going amidst the loss of wickets at the other end to ambitious shots, completing an impressive half-century off just 34 balls. He remained unbeaten on 59 as Bangladesh romped home with five wickets to spare.

Bangladesh, who take on Pakistan next, have four points in Group 1 of the Super Six table, but are behind India and Pakistan, both of whom were unbeaten in the Group stages, at this point.

Bangladesh skipper Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby praised the batting effort of the team in the post-match presentation.

“We are very pleased with the batting effort, especially that Jishan came back really well with the bat and Ariful played a very good knock. We brought in Jishan and asked him to play his shots early on. I think we are looking at improving our bowling ahead of the next game against Pakistan.”

South Africa beat Zimbabwe by nine wickets in Potchefstroom

Zimbabwe 102 (29.2 overs) v South Africa 103/1 (13.3 overs)

In the Super Six clash of the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 between South Africa and their sub-Saharan Africa neighbours, it was a Kwena Maphaka masterclass with the new ball that set the stage for South Africa’s dominance. Opting to bowl first, South Africa got an early wicket when Nathaniel Hlabangana was run out by a pinpoint direct hit from Romashan Pillay.

Maphaka went on a rampage from there, dismissing Brendon Sunguro, Campbell Macmillan, and Panashe Taruvinga within the span of just three overs, leaving Zimbabwe reeling at 16 for four. Two of these three dismissals saw the batters beaten for Maphaka’s extra pace and movement off the surface as the stumps were disturbed.

Ronak Patel, who had showcased his resilience in challenging situations in the tournament, once again rose to the occasion, this time partnering with wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Kamwemba. Together, they constructed a valuable half-century partnership that lifted Zimbabwe from a precarious position.

However, the momentum swung back in South Africa’s favour when Tristan Luus delivered a crucial double-wicket over. Luus had Patel and captain Matthew Schonken bowled in the 16th over, dealing a significant blow to Zimbabwe’s batting lineup. Shortly thereafter, Riley Norton joined the party by dismissing Kamwemba, who had been well-set, without any additional runs on the scoreboard.

Maphaka, building on his burgeoning reputation, returned to the attack and dismantled the defence of two more lower-order batters, completing his second five-wicket haul in the tournament. With his skiddy pace and movement off the pitch, Maphaka was undoubtedly the standout bowler of the day. Remarkably, four of his five dismissals at the JB Marks Oval were bowled.

With Zimbabwe struggling at 82 for nine, their last-wicket pair managed to add a few crucial runs, pushing their total just past the three-figure mark. It was Tristan Luus who finally ended Zimbabwe’s innings, dismissing the last batter. Zimbabwe concluded their innings at a mere 102 runs, narrowly avoiding what would have been their third total below 100 in four matches of the tournament.

A superstar so far in the tournament, Maphaka led his team off the field after a brilliant performance that saw him go level with the top wicket-takers (12 wickets apiece) in the tournament, Saumy Pandey and Ubaid Shah.

South African opening batters, Steve Stolk and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, continued their ruthless assault in the Powerplay, replicating their dominant performance against Scotland in the previous game. Against Zimbabwe, they unleashed a barrage of strokes, piling up an impressive 86 runs within the first 10 overs.

Stolk, riding high from his remarkable 13-ball fifty in the last match, once again took off at a blistering pace, amassing 23 runs from his first 11 deliveries.

In contrast, Pretorius initially played a more composed role. However, he quickly shifted gears and showcased his aggressive style by smashing a six and two boundaries off a single over from Ryan Simbi.

Anesu Kamuriwo was brought back into the attack following the first Powerplay, and he managed to dismiss Stolk, who had contributed a dynamic 29-ball 37 to the team’s total.

Meanwhile, Pretorius continued his onslaught, completing a well-deserved half-century. He remained unbeaten on 53 runs as South Africa cruised to yet another resounding victory, with more than 36 overs to spare.

South Africa take on Sri Lanka next on February 2 in Potchefstroom. They are currently below Australia with four points in Group 2 of the Super Six table. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will be up against England on February 3.

Kwean Maphaka, the Player of the Match, stressed that while this game was close to a complete performance for the Proteas, they were saving their best for the latter stages of the tournament.

“We are very happy with the performances. But I don’t think we have had a complete game yet. This was close, but we’re saving it. Obviously, the net run-rate is at the back of our minds, but we mainly focus on playing the game, and that’s what we did today. With the ball, I just keep doing what has been working for me — get the inswingers right and luckily it worked for me today.”

Afghanistan beat USA by three wickets in Benoni

USA 148 (48.2 overs) v Afghanistan 151/7 (49.3 overs)

In the first of two 13th-16th place playoffs held in Benoni, Afghanistan opted to bowl first against the USA. However, they struggled to make an early breakthrough as Prannav Chettipalayam and Siddharth Kappa played cautiously during the initial Powerplay.

Chettipalayam decided to up the ante in the 11th over, smashing back-to-back fours off Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar. Nevertheless, the tide turned with the introduction of skipper Naseer Khan, who immediately made an impact.

The left-arm spinner managed to trap Kappa in front of the stumps for 12, breaking the opening partnership. In his third over, he struck again, this time dismissing Chettipalayam, who handed a simple catch back to the spinner, ending his innings at 33.

Soon after, Aryaman Suri attempted a sweep shot off Arab Gul Momand but was adjudged LBW, leaving USA struggling at 68 for 3. Afghanistan then turned to Ghazanfar, who had gone wicketless in his previous five overs, with the aim of not allowing the USA batters to settle down.

This strategy paid off as the enigmatic spinner left Rishi Ramesh clueless, bowling him with a delivery that went with the angle. In his next over, Ghazanfar had Manav Nayak caught at mid-on for 12 runs, thanks to a leading edge.

Utkarsha Srivastava once again assumed the role of anchor for USA, a role he had played on several occasions during this tournament.

However, in the 39th over of the match, Faridoon Dawoodzai made a crucial impact by taking two wickets in quick succession. He removed Amogh Arepally and Utkarsha Srivastava, dealing a significant blow to USA’s batting efforts.

USA’s innings concluded at a total of 148, as Afghanistan’s bowling unit put on an impressive display in Benoni. Ghazanfar was the pick of Afghanistan’s bowlers, finishing with figures of three for 30.

Afghanistan’s hope of effortlessly chasing the target was quickly shattered as USA’s new-ball bowlers, Arya Garg and Ateendra Subramanian, made a significant impact by taking two wickets within the first two overs of the innings.

Garg struck again, dismissing Sohail Khan Zurmati, leaving Afghanistan reeling at 11 for three.

A partnership gradually took shape as Jamshid Zadran and captain Naseer Khan worked to rebuild Afghanistan’s innings. However, Subramanian returned to the attack and removed Zadran for 23. Another promising partnership was interrupted a few overs later when Numan Shan was bowled by Subramanian.

With the USA consistently taking wickets, Afghanistan’s scoring rate declined, making the run-chase more intriguing. Aaryan Batra delivered a crucial blow when he dismissed Naseer for 39, with Afghanistan yet to cross the three-figure mark.

Ghazanfar was run out by a direct hit from cover just two overs later, leaving Afghanistan in a trouble at 104 for seven. However, a pivotal eighth-wicket partnership between Arab Gul Momand and Rahimullah Zurmati injected excitement into the contest during the death overs.

Despite the tight bowling from Subramanian, Garg, and Khush Bhalala, the Afghan duo held their ground and pushed the game to the final over. Requiring four runs off four balls, Momand played a remarkable slog sweep off Bhalala, sending the ball sailing over mid-wicket for a six, securing a thrilling victory for Afghanistan.

Zurmati’s unbeaten 37 and Momand’s crucial 23 were the driving forces behind Afghanistan’s remarkable turnaround. Their unbeaten partnership of 47 runs ultimately steered Afghanistan to victory in a challenging run-chase. Subramanian was the pick of the USA bowlers, taking three for 20 in his 10 overs.

Afghanistan skipper Naseer Khan stated that it was a tough tournament for the team in the post-match presentation.

“It was a tough tournament for us, especially me as captain. We didn’t do well in the Group stages, but we’re glad to tick off this win. In the last two matches, we were a bit unlucky. We didn’t do well in the field and struggled with the bat. It would have been a different story if the top-order performed well in the last few games.”

Bengaluru sign India international Nikhil Poojary

Bengaluru: Bengaluru FC, on Wednesday, announced the signing of defender Nikhil Poojary on a deal that keeps the India international with the Blues till the end of the 2027-28 season. The announcement comes a day after the club signed Chinglensana Singh on a long-term deal, underlining intent in what’s been a busy January transfer window for the Blues.

Poojary started twice and came on as a substitute once in India’s group stage games at the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar earlier this month, and has been a mainstay on the national team for some time now.

Speaking on his signing with Bengaluru, Poojary said, “I am delighted at joining a club that has set the benchmark in Indian football on so many fronts, in just ten years of its existence. I did have a few offers to choose from, but the BCF project and the way they want to go about things is what made the decision easier for me. I had extensive chats with the management and the coach, and I feel this club is where I can help create an impact, and build on my potential”

“I have come up against BFC on many occasions in the past, and have always admired the atmosphere the fans bring to the Kanteerava. It’s going to be nice to play for, and in front of them.”

Born in Karnataka, Poojari spent most of his youth career at clubs in Mumbai, before signing for East Bengal in what would be his first senior move. He then spent a season with Pune City FC and followed it with a move to Hyderabad FC, with whom he became ISL champion in the 2021-22 season.

The Blues haven’t had the best of starts to the season, and coach Gerard Zaragoza believes that Poojary’s experience and versatility will help bolster Bengaluru’s push.

“In signing Nikhil, we are signing experience and quality. Our focus this January window was to add quality Indian defenders to the squad and I believe we have managed to do that well. Nikhil is an offensive right-back who will help us a lot in attack, and his experience will be crucial in all the defensive demands that we have from our players.”

Director of Football, Darren Caldeira said he was delighted to have Poojary on board for a project that the club is undertaking with a persistent resolve.

“I’d like to welcome Nikhil Poojary to Bengaluru Football Club. This is a player we have wanted for a while now, and when the opportunity arrived, we were determined on taking it. The fact that he had multiple offers, and chose to sign with Bengaluru reiterates the strength of the project we are building at the club. It’s also great to have a player with roots in Karnataka, and we believe he will play a pivotal role in our push to success.”

Netherlands crowned first ever men’s FIH Hockey5s world champions as Oman clinch bronze

Lausanne, Switzerland: The first ever men’s FIH Hockey5s World Cup came to a thrilling conclusion with the Netherlands overcoming Malaysia to lift the trophy and match what their women’s team achieved just four days ago.

Malaysia can be justifiably proud of their silver medal, having successfully built their senior side up from junior level over the past few years. Six of their players were part of the squad that clinched the gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, which was played in the Hockey5s format.

Meanwhile, there was home joy for hosts Oman who overcame Poland in an exhilarating encounter to secure the bronze medal at their first ever FIH World Cup in any format. And Pakistan clinched the Challenger Trophy, for those teams that didn’t make it through to the quarter-finals, after a convincing victory over Switzerland.

The action-packed tournament saw a total of 507 goals being scored in total over the four days of matches in Muscat, Oman.

The Netherlands dominated the final with a 5-2 victory over Malaysia, but they didn’t have things all their own way. The Dutch went ahead from a challenge in the first minute, only for Malaysia to equalise from a rebound off the baseline a minute later. The Dutch then built a 3-1 lead before half-time and looked comfortable. Malaysia hammered one in from long range in the opening minute of the second half, but failed to convert some very good opportunities in the riveting 10 minutes that followed, allowing the Dutch to reassert control and then fire in two late goals to secure the title.

Speaking after the match, Joey van Walstijn, who was later named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, said: “I think the strength of our team was that there was no star in the team itself. This prize is also for Koene Schaper, we did it together, we both played a good tournament. He did very well, I did very well, and the whole team performed and that’s what it’s all about.”

Hosts Oman rounded off their tournament with an enthralling 3-2 win over Poland in the bronze medal match. It was always going to be a tight encounter with neither team ranking among the top goal scorers at the tournament. Oman attacked more in the early stages to go 1-0 up after seven minutes before conceding a goal just before the break. They regained the lead early in the second half and were effective at restricting Polish opportunities until an equaliser in the 25th minute. However, the home side scored the winning goal a minute later, the ball deflecting in off the keeper’s back foot and barely crossing the line. It was enough, though, for a historic bronze medal

An elated Sami Al Laun said afterwards: “I will just say thank you to my team. We are the third place in the world. This means a lot for us as players. For me it’s a great moment to be there… This means a lot for our country.”

Earlier, India had a point to prove against Egypt, having lost to them in the pool stage, and they came out firing in a 6-4 win for 5th place. They took early control of the game and raced to a five-goal lead before the Egyptians pulled one back just before the break. Egypt looked a completely different team in the second half but it was a case of too little too late.

Kenya also reversed their pool-stage loss to Trinidad and Tobago, beating them 7-5 to claim seventh spot. The game was free-flowing and always in the balance, Kenya’s Bethuel Masambu completing his hat-trick at the death to close out the match, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Akim Toussaint contributed a hat-trick in the losing cause.

Pakistan were genuine top-eight contenders at this tournament but found themselves in the Challenger Trophy – the newly introduced trophy for those not making it through to the quarter-finals – after losing out in a very tough pool.

They showed their ability by cruising to a 10-1 win against Switzerland in the Challenger Trophy final, dominating every facet of play and denying the Swiss any opportunity to gain a foothold in the match. Zikriya Hayat completed a hat-trick, taking Pakistan well clear of the pack with 57 team goals in the tournament, while Rana Waheed finished as top individual scorer with 23 goals.

In the 11th-place playoff Australia’s Liam Kerr-Nelson scored a hat-trick to help his team to a 6-4 win over New Zealand.

The USA triumphed in a 10-9 thriller against Nigeria for 13th place, Pat Harris and Alberto Montilla scoring hat-tricks for the American side while Nigeria’s Peter John and Sunday Godwin grabbed four and three goals each in a losing cause.

Leagues Cup 2024 Unveils New Tournament Format and Groups for the second edition of MLS vs LIGA MX Competition

NEW YORK AND MEXICO CITY (January 31, 2024) – Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX announced the format and groups for Leagues Cup 2024, the second edition of the international soccer competition featuring all 47 clubs from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The month-long tournament, which will crown a winner among MLS and LIGA MX clubs, will unfold from July 26 to August 25, 2024, setting the stage for historic and emerging North American club rivalries.

Leagues Cup 2024, to be played in the United States and Canada, will decide three qualifiers for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup in which the winner will represent the region at the FIFA Club World Cup. This innovative club tournament has redefined soccer tournament competition, showcasing the best talent in North America and the intensity of the competition.

Leagues Cup 2024 Format

Moving forward, the tournament will introduce a tiered Leagues Cup Ranking system, as well as hubs for the highest-ranked LIGA MX clubs. The Leagues Cup ranking will be strictly based on combined MLS and LIGA MX club performance based on points in the last 34 regular season matches. MLS teams will be ranked based on the 2023 MLS Supporters’ Shield standings, while LIGA MX clubs will be ranked based on the cumulative 34 matches in the 2023 Clausura and Apertura tournaments.

All participating clubs – except the two Leagues’ champions – are divided into three tiers based on the Leagues Cup Ranking (1-15, 16-30, 31-45), forming 15 groups of three clubs each, one club from each tier, prioritizing geographical and competitive balance among the 45 clubs. For 2024, Leagues Cup will be played in two regions, East and West, with seven groups in the East and eight groups in the West, regionalizing travel for all participating clubs. Like the 2023 format, both LIGA MX and MLS Cup champions, Club America and Columbus Crew respectively, receive an automatic bye to the Round of 32. The two champions are not included in the Leagues Cup Ranking.

The LIGA MX Champion and the three top-ranked LIGA MX clubs will be granted hub privileges. The hub privileges, which will minimize LIGA MX club travel and reward them by playing in pre-determined venues as the home team, are based on the Leagues Cup Ranking. Club America (League champion with a bye) will have hosting privileges through the semifinals, C.F. Monterrey (No. 1 rank) through Round of 16, Chivas Guadalajara (No. 4 rank) through Round of 32, and Tigres (No. 6 rank) throughout the Group Stage, rewarding the clubs according to their 2023 Apertura and Clausura performances.

LIGA MX clubs with hub privileges will play at venues to be announced alongside the Leagues Cup 2024 schedule and bracket at a later date.

This new format, based on the Leagues Cup Ranking, was a joint collaborative effort of the Leagues Cup Organizing Committee, comprising representatives from Leagues Cup, and both MLS and LIGA MX leadership. Considerations included rewarding regular season results and geographical regions while addressing learnings from 2023.

Knockout Rounds: Following the Group Stage, the advancing 30 teams will be joined by LIGA MX and MLS cup champions (Columbus Crew and Club America, respectively) and will be placed in a fixed bracket to compete in the single-game elimination Knockout Rounds beginning with the Round of 32 (16 matches), followed by Round of 16 (eight matches). The eight advancing teams will compete in the Quarterfinals (four matches) before the two Semifinal matches. Leagues Cup 2024 Third Place and Final will determine the three Concacaf Champions Cup qualified clubs.

No Ties: Leagues Cup will maintain its current No Ties format. Each team receives one point if the game is tied after 90 minutes. The winner of the subsequent penalty shootout will earn an additional point. Regulation wins count as three points, with games being decided by penalty kick in case of regular time draw.

Fans in over 100 countries and regions will be able to watch all 77 Leagues Cup matches on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app, the subscription service from Apple and Major League Soccer that is available on smart TVs, streaming devices, Apple devices, set-top boxes, game consoles, and the web at tv.apple.com. In addition, TelevisaUnivision, TV Azteca, FOX Sports (FS1), TSN and RDS will be the linear broadcast home for selected group stage matches in Mexico, United States and Canada.

Ticket Information
Tickets for all matches will be available on LeaguesCup.com and will also be available to fans via the hosting MLS club. MLS club season ticket holders should contact their club representative for more information or visit LeaguesCup.com and follow @LeaguesCup on social

Racquetball star Conrrado Moscoso wins The World Games Athlete of the Year Award

Moscoso (28), and Rizzo (21), led the race from the start of the final round, and were very close going into the final 24 hours. They have left third and fourth places to Germany’s Marius-Andrei Balan (33) and Khrystyna Moshenska (34), nominated in the Latin dance discipline, from the DanceSport category and Ju-Jitsu ace Faisal Al Ketbi (36), from UAE.

The German dancers, performing together since 2015, collected 43,560 votes, while Faisal Al Ketbi, The World Games 2017 gold medallist, recorded 36,824 votes.

Once again with this yearly award there has been an equal distribution of votes, showcasing a very balanced gender representation. Two men and two women are in the top 3 (with one couple), while four men and three women complete the top-10 final ranking. These results align with the IWGA’s mission to promote gender equality.

IWGA President José Perurena congratulated all the finalists on their success: “On behalf of the International World Games Association, and personally, I would like to congratulate our winner and all the athletes in the Top 10 for their outstanding performances. Congratulations for their performances in this race; but they also need to be recognised and saluted for the constant, tireless hard work and sacrifices that they make to reach the highest possible level in their sport. This Award is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible records and achievements of The World Games’ male and female athletes from all over the world. Athletes are the beating heart of our community, and this trophy symbolises our gratitude.”

After the first round which ended on 22 January 2024, the ten best athletes with the most votes went into the final round, with the voting phase ending on Wednesday 31 January 2024 at 12 noon GMT. The winner, together with the silver and bronze finishers, will receive a trophy as well as a certificate. The candidates were nominated by their respective federations.

Inspire the younger generation to get moving

Conrrado Moscoso has had a highly successful and glittering career in Racquetball. He is the current International Racquetball Federation (IRF) men’s singles World champion, and currently leads the Racquetball World Rankings. He won two gold medals and one bronze at the latest edition of the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Immediately after the announcement, winner Moscoso said:  “I am incredibly grateful and honoured to win this Award. For myself of course, but also for the international Racquetball community that I wish to represent with this title. I want to advocate for my sport in my country, my continent and throughout the world because the sport deserves worldwide publicity. My goal is to inspire the younger generation to get moving and find a passion for sport, possibly Racquetball!”

IRF President Osvaldo Maggi spoke with great enthusiasm: “On behalf of the global Racquetball community, I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate our champion Conrrado Moscoso of Bolivia on this tremendous achievement. We are so proud of him for winning and we would like to thank our supportive fans that made it possible. We look forward to seeing what the next edition of The World Games in Chengdu brings!”

A great honour!

For 21-year-old Luisa Rizzo, flying her FPV drone at speeds of over 160km/h around an intricate obstacle course is much more than a simple hobby. The remarkable Italian pilot came third in the FAI World Drone Racing Championships in Namwon, Korea in 2023. She also entered the Guinness World Record Book for clearing 56 gates in 60 seconds on live TV when aged just 16.

Happy about her second place, Rizzo said: “I am delighted with this final result. It is a great honour, not only for me but for the entire air sports community, to receive this distinction. It was thrilling to follow the voting evolution since the start of the year, and I had no idea that I was going to get so much support from The World Games community. I am endlessly grateful for the mobilisation and encouragement, and I wish I knew who voted for me, in order to thank them one by one. I would also like to thank IWGA for their promotion of non-Olympic Games Sports.”

World Air Sports Federation President David Monks echoed the young athlete’s excitement: “We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Luisa Rizzo for her second place. The depth of her talent and outstanding performances in one of our disciplines is undeniable and brings us all together. We are honoured that she gets to be recognised in her specific field.”

Growing popularity of DanceSport

Right from the beginning of their union, Balan and Moshenska became one of the most successful and mesmerizing couples in the world. They are German Champions and have been finalists in every major competition in the world. Since 2020 they are #1 on the World Dance Sport Federation World Ranking List and continue to dominate the international Latin Dance scene.

Thrilled about their third place, the pair commented: “We are incredibly grateful to be second runners-up in The World Games Athlete of the Year Award. We hope DanceSport will get more recognition all over the world, because it is an artistic sport which makes you feel and look good.”

World DanceSport Federation President Shawn Tay commented: “I’m delighted to witness Marius-Andrei Balan and Khrystyna Moshenska’s remarkable journey towards the third place in the IWGA Athlete of the Year Award. I’ve known Marius and Khrystyna for over a decade and have seen them persist through all the triumphs and hardships in their career. Their global acclaim is in recognition of their sheer hard work, discipline, and dedication, as well as an important indication of the growing popularity of our beautiful, artistic sport. We, at the WDSF, are very proud of Marius and Khrystyna, and thankful for the recognition from IWGA.”

Dreams are fuelled by determination and can turn into reality

The Abu Dhabi native Ketbi, finished fourth in the race among 22 top athletes. He is the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 World Champion in Ju-Jitsu in the -94kg category. He also won TWG 2017 gold medal in Wroclaw, Poland, in the same category, and grabbed TWG 2022 golds in the -85kg group and Open Men discipline in Birmingham, USA.

Ju-Jitsu Faisal Al Ketbi commented: “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the visionary leadership of the UAE for their limitless support, which made this achievement possible. I also extend my deepest appreciation to all my supporters who have been with me on this incredible journey. This achievement is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and endeavour that has fuelled my passion for Ju-Jitsu. I dedicate this achievement to my teammates, coaches, family, and fans who have stood by me every step of the way. This achievement is not just mine; it’s a collective effort, and I am overjoyed to be able to honour my country with this recognition. Together, we’ve proven that dreams fuelled by determination can turn into reality. I hope this win serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging aspiring athletes to pursue excellence and contribute to the sport’s continued success on the global stage.”

To close the 2023 season, a total of 22 athletes were running for The World Games Athlete of the Year title. As a reminder, in the voting for 2022, the individual winner was Valeria Cardenas (COL) from the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF).

Jaipur Pink Panthers beat Tamil Thalaivas 42-27, qualify for playoffs of PKL Season 10

31st January, Patna:  The Jaipur Pink Panthers beat the Tamil Thalaivas 42-27 in their Pro Kabaddi League match at the Patliputra Indoor Stadium in Patna on Wednesday.

The win meant the Jaipur Pink Panthers have become the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season, with three legs of the league stage yet to be played. As has been his wont this season Arjun Deshwal starred for the Jaipur Pink Panthers with a massive 13 points while the Tamil Thalaivas’ raider Narender picked up 12 in a losing effort.

In a first half defined mostly by extraordinary moments, Narender kicked things off with a SUPER RAID to take out Reza Mirbagheri, Ankush and Sunil Kumar to put the Tamil Thalaivas in control. Not to be outdone, Arjun Deshwal responded in kind with a SUPER RAID of his own that reduced the Tamil Thalaivas numbers on the mat.

It took a pair of brilliant SUPER TACKLES from the Thalaivas’ debutant Mohammadreza Kaboudrahangi to keep his side in the same and even hold a slender two point lead as they went into the break.

The second half though was a different game altogether as the Jaipur Pink Panthers banded together and came to the fore to show their championship credentials.

Deshwal’s constant menace had the Tamil Thalaivas scrambling and they inflicted the first ALL OUT of the game to take a 27-20 lead halfway through the second half.

A second ALL OUT with four minutes of the game left ended the contest as the Jaipur Pink Panthers took a massive 37-22 lead. Their misfiring defence which had logged a mere three points in the first half clicked brilliantly to come back with 11 in the second period, a huge reason for their resounding victory.

Brilliant performances from Sandeep and Ankit help Patna Pirates tie with Bengaluru Bulls to end home leg unbeaten

31st January, Patna: Patna Pirates extended their unbeaten run at home as they shared points with the Bengaluru Bulls in a pulsating 28-28 tie in the Pro Kabaddi League match at the Patliputra Indoor Stadium in Patna on Wednesday. Patna Pirates’ Sandeep Kumar (14 raid points) and Ankit (8 tackle points) were the star performers of the enthralling encounter.

Bengaluru Bulls had a fresh raiding lineup today and Sushil made all the difference in the opening minutes. The youngster produced a magnificent SUPER RAID to put his team 5-1 ahead and reduce the opposition to just 2 men. The home side, who were missing their captain Sachin, recovered well to avoid the ALL OUT and fought back through Ankit in defence and raider Sandeep to draw level at 8-8.

Akshit turned up for the Bengaluru Bulls as he chipped away at the Patna Pirates’ defence and a superb chain tackle on Sandeep led to the ALL OUT in the 16th minute. The side from Karnataka took a 14-10 lead and the opening half came to an end with a 2-point raid from Patna Pirates captain Manjeet.

Sandeep stepped up big time for the Patna Pirates in the 2nd half as he starred with a series of spectacular raids, which included 2 multi-point raids. One of those saw him escape Monu’s attempted ankle hold and then land a running hand touch on Parteek to bring up his 1st SUPER 10 of the season. Ankit was also particularly good for the home team as he excelled with a High 5 as they took the lead at 26-25 with 5 minutes to go.

It all boiled down to the final few minutes as Sandeep and Ankit combined to give Patna Pirates a 1-point lead at 29-28 with less than 2 minutes to go. Patna Pirates had a couple of reviews go their way and looked set to pick up a win, but Bharat came off the bench for Bengaluru Bulls and landed a running hand touch on Krishan Dhull in the penultimate raid to tie the scores and wrap up a thrilling contest. In the process, Patna Pirates became just the 2nd team to remain unbeaten in their home leg this season along with Jaipur Pink Panthers.

ILT20 Will Become One of the Toughest Leagues to Play In Soon, Says Mohammad Amir

Dubai, 31st January, 2024: Considered to be among the best bowlers in the DP World ILT20 Season 2, the Desert Vipers’ left arm pacer Mohammad Amir was on fire against the MI Emirates, helping his side register a thrilling win at the Dubai International Stadium. The Desert Vipers won by 2 wickets against MI Emirates.

Amir, who bagged three wickets for 26 runs in his quota of 4 overs, dismissed the dangerous Kusal Perera for 0, and followed it up with the scalps of Tim David and Trent Boult in the last over of the innings, to restrict the MI Emirates to 149.

Speaking after the match, Amir said, “I got three wickets, so that feels good for sure, but most importantly, the team won the game, and this performance is definitely going to help my confidence, and I hope to continue in this form going ahead in the tournament.”

Amir, who was the Player of the Match, is one of the senior players in the DP World ILT20, and has paired up with the sensational Shaheen Shah Afridi at the Desert Vipers. “Bowling with Shaheen is great and I think he is also enjoying it. Bowling is also all about partnerships, and the best part is that we communicate a lot about the conditions and the game in between the overs as well. Shaheen is a good bowler, and it helps to be able to share our experiences with each other.”

Opening further on his thoughts about the dashing young Shaheen Shah Afridi, the former Pakistan bowler said, “He is running in well when he is bowling, Shaheen is running in fast, and his strength is that he bowls brilliantly with the new ball. Shaheen gets the new ball to swing and when he bowls full, he gets chances to pick wickets.”

The Vipers won the game off the final delivery off the game, when Shaheen Afridi slashed hard at a Trent Boult delivery to get his team over the line. Reflecting on that, Amir said, “Shaheen played a very good innings at the end to help us win the game, and he has also been working hard on his batting. I think this was the best game of the DP World ILT20 so far.”

While Amir will hope to continue his good work with the ball in the next half of the DP World ILT20 for the Desert Vipers, the ace pacer said, “There are 18 international players competing with each other in every game, and I think in the coming days it will become one of the toughest leagues, and I am really happy for the UAE local players, as they are performing well, and that is a good thing for UAE cricket.”

Joseph, Hartley gain in ICC Test Rankings after incredible performances

West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph and England spinner Tom Hartley hog the limelight in the latest update to the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, reaping the benefits of their outstanding performances over the past week.

Joseph, whose sensational seven-wicket haul in the second innings helped the West Indies score a thrilling eight-run victory over Australia in Brisbane to draw the two-match ICC World Test Championship series 1-1, finds himself in joint-50th position after moving up 42 places.

The 24-year-old’s tally of 397 rating points is the fifth-best by a West Indies bowler after two Tests, with some past greats ahead of him in that list. Fast bowler Colin Croft (447), left-arm spinner Alf Valentine (443), fast bowler Wes Hall (422) and off-spinner Sonny Ramadhin (407) had more points after their first two Tests.

Hartley too had a remarkable seven-wicket haul in the second innings of the opening Test against India and finished with nine wickets in the match, helping pull off a 28-run win in Hyderabad. The 24-year-old left-arm spinner is in 63rd position with 332 rating points, the best by any England bowler after his debut Test since left-arm seam bowler John Lever achieved 393 points with a 10-wicket match haul against India in Delhi in December 1976.

Former captain Joe Root’s spin bowling has lifted eight places to 54th among bowlers after he finished with five wickets in the match, including an important four-wicket haul in the first innings.

Player of the Match Ollie Pope’s second innings knock of 196 has lifted him 20 positions to a career-best 15th position while his team-mate Ben Duckett has progressed five places to 22nd position after useful scores of 35 and 47 at the top of the order.

Indian batters KL Rahul (up three places to 51st) and Yashaswi Jaiswal (up three places to 66th) have moved up the rankings after scores of 86 and 80, respectively, in the first innings while Jasprit Bumrah has advanced one place to fourth after finishing with six wickets in the match. All-rounder Axar Patel has progressed in both lists – from 51st to 50th in batting and from 33rd to 31st in bowling.

Joseph was the top gainer for the West Indies after the Brisbane Test but his fellow fast bowlers Kemar Roach (up two places to 17th) and Alzarri Joseph (up four places to 33rd) have also made headway after finishing with three and six wickets, respectively, in the match.

Joshua de Silva (up 12 places to 60th), Kirk McKenzie (up nine places to 76th) and Kavem Hodge (up 98 places to 81st) have moved up the batting rankings after some useful knocks

KIYG 2023 || School bus driver’s daughter wins bronze, father’s relentless persistence reaps fruit

Chennai, January 31: At 4.30 in the morning, Jagdish Gulia and his eight-year-old daughter Tannu were glued to television watching Indian women wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympics. When Sakshi Malik turned the bout on its head in the dying seconds to secure bronze, both Jagdish and Tannu embraced each other in celebration.

It was at this moment when Jagdish, a school bus driver in Haryana, decided that Tannu would become a grappler. On the other hand, Tannu was even more excited thinking about the travelling opportunities she would be getting as an athlete.

She took one step closer to that dream when she won the bronze medal in the 65kg weight category at the Rajarathinam stadium here on Tuesday.

“My father would have been happy with gold, but it’s okay. Unlike the last edition where I was eliminated in the second round and returned empty-handed, this time I have something to show to my father,” said Tannu, who went about displaying her medal around the arena.

Usually, her father travels with her to most competitions, but this time his school did not sanction his leave so she was accompanied by her uncle Narendra and younger cousin sister Sakshi, who could not win a medal.

Tannu has so far won four medals, including the bronze medal here. She bagged the Under-19 School Games gold in 2023; bronze at Under-17 Cadet Ranking Series in 2022 and Under-14 School National Games in 2019.

“In the next Khelo India Youth Games you will see me take the gold. I will leave no stone unturned and work hard from here on. The opportunity and medal at Khelo India Youth Games has pumped me up enough. I know I deserve bigger and better,” Tannu added.

She said her father, despite his low earnings, has done everything to look after wrestler’s diet. “He feeds me everything to keep me strong. My uncle has even bought a buffalo so that there is no shortage of milk and ghee,” she revealed.

Netherlands and Malaysia to battle for first ever men’s FIH Hockey5s World Cup crown

Lausanne, Switzerland: The Netherlands and Malaysia prevailed in their quarter-final and semi-final matches on the third day of action in Oman on Tuesday to set up a tantalising final to crown the first ever men’s FIH Hockey5s world champions.

The Netherlands defeated India in the last-eight playoff and then Oman in their semi-final to book their passage into the final.

Meanwhile, Malaysia overcame Trinidad and Tobago and then a spirited Poland to make their way through to the gold-medal match.

That leaves Oman and Poland to battle it out for bronze.

Meanwhile, in the Challenger Trophy, contested by the teams that didn’t make it through to the quarter-finals, Pakistan will come up against Switzerland for the spoils.

This is how the third day’s action unfolded…

The Netherlands finally ended Oman’s fantastic run in the hosts’ first ever FIH World Cup with a relatively comfortable 5-3 win in the first semi-final of the day. The Dutch dictated matters in the first half and built up a 3-0 lead before the break. Oman fought back well to win the second half, but the Netherlands used all their experience to control possession and dictate the pace. The Dutch are deserved finalists, while Oman can approach the bronze medal match with their heads held very high.

Netherlands captain Imre Vos speaking after the win said, “Feels amazing to be in the finals. It has been a great tournament so far with fantastic opponents, and we have had to stay alert the whole game. Each time we lost focus a little bit throughout the tournament, opponents have punished us, so it has been tough, but very happy to have reached the finals despite that.”

Malaysia survived a late onslaught from Poland to win the second semi-final 4-3. Both teams played a tight, disciplined first half and the scores were locked at 1-1 at half-time. Malaysia went ahead just after half-time with a long range shot, and then added two more to lead 4-1 with six minutes to play. Poland staged a comeback, scoring twice in the late stages before missing a challenge opportunity as the clock ran down.

Malaysia captain, Akhimullah Anuar, who got on the scoresheet twice in the semi-final, speaking after the match said: “I have to give credit to the team. We have sacrificed a lot to get here. We did not start the tournament in the best way, with the draw against Oman, but since then have improved every game to get this far.”

Meanwhile, in the playoffs for 5th – 8th place India had a comfortable 9-4 win over Kenya, India’s Utam Singh and Kenya’s Moses Ademba bagging hat-tricks, while Egypt’s Hossameldin Ragab scored a hat-trick in his side’s 8-5 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

Earlier in the day in the quarter-finals, the Netherlands came from behind three times in a 7-4 win over India. It was three goals in the three minutes before the break that eventually gave the Dutch a 5-3 lead, and even a hat-trick from Mohammed Raheel’s wasn’t enough to get India back into the game.

Hosts Oman absorbed all the early pressure from Kenya and then took full control for a 5-2 win, Khalid Al Shaaibi contributing a hat-trick and helping his team to the semi-finals in their first ever FIH World Cup.

Poland squeaked home 2-1 in a thrilling encounter with Egypt. Goalkeepers Maciej Pacanowski and Mohamed Hemid delivered excellent performances, and with the scores locked at 1-1 going into a frantic final minute, they were both called on to make desperate saves. Poland clinched the match from a challenge with time up on the clock.

Malaysia trailed three times in their 5-4 victory over Trinidad and Tobago before building a 5-3 lead after a strong start to the second half. Trinidad and Tobago came back hard in the final minute, scoring once and being denied an equaliser by an excellent Shahrul Saupi save with 30 seconds remaining.

In the playoffs for 9th to 12th position, where the teams are vying for the newly introduced Challenger Trophy, Pakistan’s Rana Waheed bagged five goals as his side unravelled Australia 11-3. Switzerland scored two very late goals against New Zealand, with Elias Brönnimann completing his hat-trick in the 29th minute to level the scores and then scoring another in the shootout where the Swiss prevailed 2-1.

In the 13th-16th place playoffs, the USA completely dominated Jamaica in a comfortable 8-1 win. Nigeria came back from two goals down against Fiji, Dennis Solomon equalising in the final minute to complete his hat-trick, and then edged them out 2-1 in the shootout.

Finalists Announced for the 13th Annual NFL Salute to Service Award Presented by USAA

NEW YORK – Jan. 30, 2024 – The NFL and USAA, an official NFL Salute to Service partner, announced Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, and New England Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona as finalists for the 13th annual Salute to Service Award presented by USAA.

The Salute to Service Award is part of USAA and the NFL’s year-round commitment to honor, empower, and connect with our nation’s service members, veterans, and their families. The 32 nominees from each NFL team were announced in November and consisted of active and retired players, coaches, and team executives and personnel who best demonstrated support for the military community.

The Salute to Service Award recipient will be recognized at NFL Honors, a primetime awards special to air nationally on the CBS Television Network and NFL Network, and stream on Paramount+ and NFL+ on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the Resorts World Theatre in Las Vegas.

“In looking at this season’s finalists for the Salute to Service Award presented by USAA, we have two players whose families have served as well as a player who currently serves our country, and each of them has made it their personal mission to give back by supporting our military community during their time in the NFL,” said Major General (Ret.) Bob Whittle, USAA Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff. “USAA salutes George, Aaron, and Joe for going the extra mile to honor our military, veterans and their families, and we encourage all Americans to follow their lead.”

“Each nominee displays the qualities of sacrifice, service and integrity which serves as the cornerstone of this award”, said Chad Hennings Air Force Academy graduate, three-time Super Bowl champion and Salute to Service Award panelist. “Aaron Jones, George Kittle and Joe Cardona should be proud of this accomplishment as they each exemplify what it means to serve their countries, their organizations and the community.”

USAA will contribute $25,000 in the award recipient’s honor to the official aid societies representing each of the military branches. The NFL Foundation will match that donation, which will go directly to the recipient’s military charity of choice. The award recipient will also receive a specially designed military challenge coin which are presented to members of the military community to demonstrate membership, recognize excellence, or boost morale.

Fans were able to vote for their favorite nominees again this year, and the finalists were ultimately decided based on this consensus vote of fans, an NFL internal committee and USAA. Nominees were also evaluated on the positive impact of their efforts to support the military community, the type of service conducted, the thoroughness of their support and the level of commitment.

A panel of judges, consisting of representatives from the U.S. military community, the NFL and USAA, will determine the Salute to Service Award recipient, and includes Chad Hennings, Air Force Academy graduate and three-time Super Bowl champion; Jim Mora, Sr., Marine Corps veteran and former NFL head coach; Lenny Bandy, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and NFL Vice President of Security; Major General (Ret.) Robert Whittle, USAA Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff, and Ron Rivera, former NFL head coach and 2023 Salute to Service Award recipient.

Since 2011, USAA has used its sponsorship to honor and appreciate service members, veterans, and their families by creating unique opportunities that bring the military community and the NFL closer together.

Below is an overview of the three finalists. To learn more about the Salute to Service Award presented by USAA, please visit NFL.com/Salute.

Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers running back
Aaron Jones, who grew up with both of his parents serving in the U.S. Army, knows firsthand the sacrifices involved with serving, and he has made giving back to active-duty and veterans, a special focus of his community involvement. Jones is a big part of the Packers’ Salute to Service efforts, serving as a spokesperson for the initiative and taking part in every opportunity to honor veterans. Last November, he spent time promoting Patriot K9s of Wisconsin, a nonprofit devoted to connecting veterans with trained service dogs. In the last several years, Jones has sent videos to veterans, spoken with youth at military academies and taken part in events like the team’s Huddle for Heroes aimed at honoring veterans. Diamondbacks Secure Joc Pederson with One-Year Deal, Designate Snider for Assignment

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a strategic addition to their roster by signing DH/OF Joc Pederson to a one-year contract, with an option for mutual extension into 2025. In a move to maintain balance on their 40-man roster, the D-backs have designated right-handed pitcher Collin Snider for assignment.

Joc Pederson, a seasoned major leaguer with a decade of experience, brings a wealth of accolades and achievements to Arizona. Standing at 6’1” and weighing 220 pounds, the left-handed hitter has been a key figure in the baseball world, with a resume that includes two World Series championships — with the Atlanta Braves in 2021 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Furthermore, Pederson has started in the National League All-Star Game twice, representing the San Francisco Giants in 2022 and the Dodgers in 2015.

Pederson’s track record since his MLB debut speaks volumes of his impact on the field. Among active National League outfielders and designated hitters, he ranks impressively in several categories since 2015: fourth in games played (1,122), fifth in home runs (186), sixth in walks (433), seventh in extra-base hits (366), and ninth in RBIs (485).

His prowess against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons is notable, with a batting average of .260 and an OPS of .841, including 35 home runs and 107 RBIs. Pederson’s clutch performance with runners in scoring position against righties is particularly striking, boasting a .348 batting average and a .994 OPS.

Pederson’s postseason experience further bolsters his value to the Diamondbacks. In 79 career playoff games, he has maintained a .256 batting average with 12 home runs and 29 RBIs, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

Last season with the Giants, Pederson proved to be a critical asset, leading the team in game-winning RBIs and ranking second in walk rate. Over his 10-season career, which includes stints with the Dodgers, Cubs, Braves, and Giants, Pederson has compiled a solid .237 batting average, .800 OPS, and accumulated 485 RBIs and 186 home runs across 1,140 games.

The departure of Collin Snider, who was claimed off waivers from the Royals in December 2023, makes room for Pederson’s arrival. The Diamondbacks’ decision to bring in Pederson is a clear move to enhance their offensive capabilities and experience on the field as they gear up for the upcoming season, aiming to make a significant impact in the league.
