South Africa vs Pakistan

South Africa win thriller to become first team to qualify for ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 at Lord’s

South Africa overcame Pakistan by two wickets in a breathless conclusion at Centurion on Sunday to win the first Test and become the first team to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 at Lord’s from 11 to 15 June 2025, barring any subsequent point deductions.

Chasing 148 for victory, the home side battled back from 19 for three and 99 for eight to edge over the line on day four, thanks to a scintillating, unbeaten 51-run ninth wicket partnership between Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada.

The victory came as the Proteas extended their superb run of form in Tests to six successive wins, helping them reach 66.67 percentage points atop the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings with just one Test to play as the cycle draws to a close.

June’s Ultimate Test represents a week-long celebration of the longest format, and will see South Africa compete for the first time at the event, where they will be hoping to emulate previous winners from the southern hemisphere – New Zealand in 2021, and Australia in 2023.

With their opponents yet to be decided, the matchup promises to be a thrilling spectacle, pitting the two best Test teams against each other following a dramatic two years of intense competition at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground – the venue for some of the most memorable moments in the sport’s celebrated history.

Reacting to their qualification for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said: â€œAt the start of this World Test Championship cycle, we set our sights on reaching the Final. Given our journey to this point, it’s a proud moment for the entire team.

“It’s been a great effort from everyone, and it feels like all the hard work we’ve put in over the past 12 months has paid off. Different guys have stepped up at different times — it’s been a real team effort.

“I also want to give a special thanks to Shukri (Conrad), our coach. The belief he’s instilled in us over the last year has been huge. He’s always backed us, and that confidence has been key in getting us to this point.

“To play the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s is a dream come true for any cricketer – it’s a huge occasion, and we can’t wait to take it all in.”

With only six Tests left to play in the WTC calendar, the last remaining contenders India, Australia and Sri Lanka continue to do battle in the hope of securing the last spot at the Ultimate Test.

Australia have the upper hand currently with 58.89 percentage points and three remaining fixtures after the ongoing Melbourne Test match, while India stand on 55.88 percentage points with just the solitary Test to play – the last contest in the Border-Gavaskar Series in Sydney starting 2 January.

Sri Lanka, on 45.45 percentage points, also retain a mathematical possibility of qualification, but they will need to sweep Australia in their two-match series on home soil next month and hope that other results go their way.

Remaining fixtures in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25:

2 January – Australia v India, Sydney
3 January – South Africa v Pakistan
17 January – Pakistan v West Indies, Multan
25 January – Pakistan v West indies, Multan

The lineup for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year includes Sri Lankan duo Wanindu Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis, who boast the most wickets (26) and the most runs (742) respectively in the 50-over format in 2024.

Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai also earns his way onto the shortlist after impressing with both bat and ball during the calendar year, notching 417 runs and 17 wickets. Completing the lineup is the West Indies’ Sherfane Rutherford, whose 425 runs in 2024 came at a sparkling average of 106.25.

Sri Lanka are also represented among the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year nominees, where Chamari Athapaththu will be aiming to emulate last year’s success in this category after another headline-grabbing series of performances. She stands against another past winner and two-time Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy winner, India’s Smriti Mandhana, who ends 2024 as the leading run-scorer in the format and four-time century-maker.

Australia’s superlative all-rounder Annabel Sutherland is the third candidate for the ODI crown thanks to a batting average of over 52 and a bowling average of under 18. The final name on the shortlist is South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt, for striking 697 runs during the calendar year.

The ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year features a stellar list of high impact performers. Among the candidates for the T20I prize is joint leading wicket-taker from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, India’s Arshdeep Singh, who also jointly sits atop the wicket-taking charts across the whole year in the format with 36.

Also nominated for the award is Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who leads the run-scoring list for the year with 738, Australia’s Travis Head, who scored 539 runs from his 15 matches and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza, who once again enjoyed a fruitful 2024 with bat and ball.

New Zealand eventually claimed their maiden T20 World Cup title, and their premier all-rounder Amelia Kerr was the standout performer during the landmark event – setting a new record for wicket-taking and producing a brilliant display in the final to secure the trophy. She is nominated with a total of 29 wickets and 387 runs during the year.

Completing the lineup is Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast, who exhibited superb form in T20Is, taking 21 wickets and hitting 539 runs in 2024.

Fans are now able to vote for their favourite cricketers at www.icc-cricket.com, with other categories unlocked as the final nominees are revealed by the ICC over the next 24 hours.

More information about each of the nominees can be found here on the ICC website.

The ICC Awards 2024 comprises 12 individual awards, with shortlists in nine categories being revealed by the ICC between 28 and 30 December.

Shortlists have been drawn up by a specialist panel of cricket writers and broadcasters, who selected the nominees according to on-field performances and overall achievements in international cricket throughout the calendar year.

Fan voting results will be combined with selections made by a prominent panel of international cricket media – the ICC Voting Academy – to identify the winner in each of the shortlisted categories.

Other categories which will be celebrated in the ICC Awards 2024 include the ICC Men’s and Women’s Associate Cricketers of the Year and the ICC Umpire of the Year.

In addition to the individual awards, five ICC Teams of the Year will be also decided by the ICC Voting Academy, identifying the standout XIs across men’s and women’s international cricket during the calendar year.

Delhi SG Pipers defeats Gonasika in Hero Hockey India League opener

Rourkela, 28 December 2024: The Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 season got off to a thrilling start with Delhi SG Pipers triumphing against Gonasika,  at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Saturday. Tomas Domene (5`, 39`) scored for Delhi SG Pipers while Struan Walker (26`) and Victor Charlet (35`) scored for Gonasika.

Argentina’s Domene scored the first goal of Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 season in the fifth minute. Delhi SG Pipers captain Jake Whetton won possession high up the pitch and dribbled his way into the Gonasika circle before winning a penalty corner off Dipsan Tirkey. Domene rifled his drag flick into goal with goalkeeper Oliver Payne barely getting any time to react.

Gonasika slowly found their rhythm as the first quarter went on and came close to equalising towards the end. Captain Manpreet Singh played a one-two with Jack Waller but failed to connect with the ball in front of goal.

Gonasika pressed hard for an equaliser and deservedly got it four minutes from the end of the second quarter. Araijeet Singh Hundal hit a powerful shot hoping to catch Delhi SG Pipers goalkeeper Benjamin Rennie off at the near post. The shot took a slight deflection off Gonasika forward Nikkin Thimmaiah’s stick and crashed onto the post. Rennie was caught off guard with Scotland’s Walker tapping the ball into the empty goal.

Delhi SG Pipers looked to hit back immediately but Payne made a couple of good saves to ensure both teams went into halftime on level terms.

Having trailed for most of the first half, Gonasika took the lead early five minutes into the third quarter. Mandeep Singh and Araijeet Singh Hundal led a Gonasika counter before the latter won a penalty corner. France’s Victor Charlet’s ferocious drag flick evaded goalkeeper Pawan and Jarmanpreet Singh at the post sparking wild celebrations from the Gonasika players.

However, Gonasika’s lead lasted only four minutes. Walker received a five-minute suspension soon after for a poor foul and Delhi SG Pipers capitalised upon their numerical advantage. Ky Willott got the ball on the goalline and the Australian played an inch-perfect cut-back which Domene converted with ease.

Domene could have completed his hat-trick in the final minute of the third quarter from a penalty corner. However, Payne saved Domene’s drag flick before denying Sumit Kumar from the rebound.

Payne was in imperious form as he pulled off two stunning saves midway through the fourth quarter to deny Delhi SG Pipers the lead. A minute later, Domene once again came close to completing his hat-trick but his drag-flick cannoned off the post.

Gonasika and Delhi SG Pipers went all in searching for a late winner but both goalkeepers stood firm as the match ended 2-2. In the penalty shootout, Delhi SG Pipers converted four of their five attempts to secure the victory. Jake Whetton, Tomas Domene, Sourabh Anand Kushwaha and Raj Kumar Pal converted successfully for Delhi SG Pipers.

Bengaluru FC

Williams’ brace guides Bengaluru FC past Chennaiyin FC in a six-goal thriller

Chennai, December 28: Bengaluru FC triumphed over Chennaiyin FC with a 4-2 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season tonight.

Ryan Williams scored a brace and Sunil Chhetri was also on the scoresheet as Bengaluru FC (27) reduced the deficit at the top with Mohun Bagan Super Giant (29) to only two points with the year coming to an end. Irfan Yadwad and Lalrinliana Hnamte were on the scoresheet for Chennaiyin FC.

The game started with great intensity from the first minute with Rahul Bheke testing Mohammed Nawaz with a header on target. Daniel Chima Chukwu almost handed the lead to the hosts three minutes later, when Lukas Brambilla unleashed him with a defence-splitting pass. The Nigerian’s subsequent effort was blocked by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in goal.

Despite having more of the ball in the first quarter of the game, the Marina Machans were pegged back when Ryan Williams nestled the ball into the net from a cross delivered by Jorge Pereyra Diaz in the 16th minute. BFC 1 – 0 CFC

But Bengaluru FC’s lead lasted only three minutes as the Marina Machans were rewarded for their sustained pressure with Irfan turning in the equaliser in the 19th minute. It was Brambilla, who was the orchestrator of the goal as he won possession in midfield before he found Irfan with a smart square pass in the penalty area. BFC 1 – 1 CFC

In the 43rd minute, Bengaluru FC took the lead through Sunil Chhetri, against the run of play. Williams found Chhetri in the penalty area completely unmarked with a cross and the record goal-scorer didn’t make any mistake to head it past Nawaz. BFC 2 – 1 CFC

However, Chennaiyin FC clawed their way back right at the stroke of half-time when Gurpreet mismanaged a Lalrinliana Hnamte header following a long throw-in from Bikash Yumnam. BFC 2 – 2 CFC

Chennaiyin FC were the dominant side throughout the first half as they pressed higher up the pitch and won possession in dangerous areas to initiate counter-attacks. However, they weren’t clinical enough to take their chances as the scores were level at the break.

The Marina Machans continued their high press in the second half as they were inducing mistakes from the Bengaluru FC defenders. However, it also meant that the visitors had acres of space behind the Chennaiyin FC defence for them to exploit.

Bengaluru FC almost found the lead in the 56th minute, when Pedro Capo combined with Pereyra Diaz in the final third. However, the former’s effort was parried away by Nawaz. The Blues gradually gained momentum with the likes of Pereyra Diaz, Noguera and Williams getting into the mix of things. They were eventually rewarded when Pereyra Diaz made a timely cut-back to find Williams in the penalty area and the Australian slotted it past Nawaz to put Bengaluru FC ahead in the game in the 69th minute. BFC 3 – 2 CFC

Right after taking the lead, Gerard Zaragoza brought on Aleksandar Jovanovic and Vinith Venkatesh to replace Noguera and Chinglensana Singh to strengthen the backline. In retaliation, Owen Coyle freshened things up with Kiyan Nassiri, replacing Farukh Choudhary in attack.

However, things turned bad to worse for the Marina Machans as Williams’ cross was turned in by Laldinliana Renthlei into his own net in the 82nd minute, handing Bengaluru FC a two-goal advantage. In the last few minutes, Chennaiyin FC had a few openings but they weren’t clinical enough to reduce the deficit as they lost five out of their last six games in the competition. BFC 4 – 2 CFC

Hyderabad FC’s persistence pays off in dying minutes to deny East Bengal FC full points after 1-1 draw

Hyderabad, December 28: Hyderabad FC and East Bengal FC played out a 1-1 draw at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 this evening. The home side maintained 56.7% of the possession and produced a greater passing accuracy of 87% as opposed to the 74% of their opponents. However, they had to wait right until the 90th minute mark to win a point from this match against the Red & Gold Brigade that had won their last two matches on a trot.

Hyderabad FC made the first move as the proceedings kicked off, as the duo of Isaac Vanmalsawma and Joseph Sunny interlinked in the final third after two minutes to test the East Bengal FC defence. Issac’s pass was laid out for Joseph outside the box, but, instead of engaging in further build-up, the latter attempted a shot from distance that was blocked in time.

The home side kept the pressure up in the following few minutes, compelling Hijazi Maher to concede a corner in the 11th minute. As a consequence of that set-piece, Manoj Mohammad pulled off an aerial effort from the centre of the 18-yard box that missed the target on the right side.

What followed thereafter was a guarded affair with neither of the two sides being able to produce clear cut chances. There was a spate of corners and free-kicks being won, but nothing substantial came out of those moves, until Edmilson Correia dazzled on the left side of the 18-yard box after receiving a pass from Isaac in the 41st minute, adjusted his movement and thundered a shot that missed hitting the woodwork by a whisker on the right side.

Two minutes into the second half, Correia again sprang into action, deftly receiving a lateral delivery in the centre of the box from Cy Goddard, but shot it off target on the right side despite being in close distance from the goal.

It took a fantastic free-kick from Cleiton Silva in the 64th minute to create the move that broke the deadlock in this match. Dimitrios Diamantakos won a foul and Silva stepped up on the ball and discharged an impressive delivery that smashed the crossbar, only to find Jeakson Singh pounce upon the rebound and bundle it into the centre of the net to get the visitors ahead, arguably against the run of momentum.

Hyderabad FC dug deep in the game though, making some compelling moves to find the equaliser. Eventually, it required some quick thinking from Correia as late as in the 90th minute mark to drag his side back after the setback they received from Jeakson’s goal.

Hyderabad FC had the duo of Lenny Rodrigues and Devendra Murgaonkar coming in as substitutes in the 85th minute and fresh legs certainly swayed the game in their favour, with Murgaonkar making an instant impact through an outside-of-the-box shot that was set up for him by Abdul Rabeeh. It didn’t land on target, but showed that the home side was getting on the offensive, before Correia trusted Manoj by passing the ball to him on the left side of the box when he had an opportunity to bury the goal to cap off a quick attacking move. Manoj repaid the faith by holding his composure and dispatching the ball into the bottom right corner to rescue a point for his side from this game.

Key Performer of the Match

Manoj Mohammed (Hyderabad FC)

The defender completed 38 out of his 44 attempted passes, making one interception, three clearances, and demonstrating tremendous command under pressure to score his side’s only goal of the game.

What’s next for both teams?

Hyderabad FC will play their next game against Mohun Bagan Super Giant on January 2. East Bengal FC are set to clash against Mumbai City FC on January 6.

Brief Scores

Hyderabad FC 1 (Manoj Mohammed 90’) – 1 East Bengal FC (Jeakson Singh 64’)

PKL Melbourne Raid Lights Up John Cain Arena as Pro Kabaddi All Stars triumph over Aussie Raiders

Melbourne, December 28, 2024: The John Cain Arena played host to a historic PKL Melbourne Raid, featuring a spectacular double-header that showcased kabaddi’s finest talent from the PKL as well as from Australia. The evening witnessed two contrasting matches: a nail-biting encounter between the PKL All Star Masters and PKL Mavericks that ended in a thrilling 41-39 victory for the Mavericks. Meanwhile, the showpiece international clash between the Pro Kabaddi All Stars and the host nation’s Aussie Raiders saw the All Stars emerge victorious with a commanding 46-28 scoreline.

The PKL Melbourne Raid’s opening match began with strong defensive displays before Saurabh Nandal’s Super Raid gave the PKL All Star Masters an early lead. However, the PKL Mavericks responded with an ALL OUT, powered by two-point raids from Ajay Thakur and Pardeep Narwal. Despite this, the momentum shifted when Maninder Singh’s Super Raid inflicted an ALL OUT on the Mavericks, giving the Masters a 22-19 lead at half-time.

The second half saw Pardeep Narwal showcase his prowess with a Super Raid, helping the Mavericks close the gap. Though the Masters briefly regained the lead through Jai Bhagwan’s Super Raid, Pardeep Narwal’s Super 10 performance proved decisive. Despite late drama threatening to swing the match, the Mavericks held on to secure a thrilling 41-39 victory, keeping the fans at the John Cain Arena on the edge of their seats.

In the second match, it took the Pro Kabaddi All Stars just three and a half minutes to inflict an ALL OUT on the Aussie Raiders, but Benny Gowers tackled Pardeep Narwal, getting the Australian team to four points on the board. The fifth point for the Aussie Raiders was won by Brett Deledio, with a running hand touch on Saurabh Nandal. By then, the score read 9-24 at the end of the first half.

In a bid to get their match back on track, the Aussie Raiders inflicted an ALL OUT on the Pro Kabaddi All Stars after Heppel managed to get touches on Jeeva Kumar and Anup Kumar. This move reduced the deficit to 12 points.

Soon after, Maninder Singh and Sukesh Hegde contributed crucial points, whilst Rakesh Kumar and Ran Singh provided solid defensive support, helping the Pro Kabaddi All Stars maintain control throughout most of the match. Despite some impressive moments from the Aussies, including a successful ALL OUT led by Heppel and Billy Gowers’ heroic struggle against Ran Singh, the home team’s lack of experience showed in crucial moments.

The Pro Kabaddi All Stars’ superior tactical awareness and raid efficiency ultimately proved decisive as they closed out a commanding 46-28 victory at John Cain Arena, with the final raid seeing Joshua Kennedy brought down on the left flank as the Pro Kabaddi All Stars went on to win by 17 points.

NFL: Seahawks Edge Bears in Defensive Standoff: Myers and Woolen Lead the Way in 6-3 Victory

The Seattle Seahawks edged past the Chicago Bears 6-3 in a tightly contested game at Soldier Field on December 26, 2024. The low-scoring affair, played under mostly cloudy skies at 47°F, was a showcase of defensive dominance and special teams efficiency. Both teams failed to find the end zone, relying solely on field goals to put points on the board. Jason Myers’ two successful kicks from 27 and 50 yards proved decisive for the Seahawks, while Cairo Santos managed a single 42-yard field goal for the Bears.

Seattle started the game strongly, with quarterback Geno Smith orchestrating an efficient opening drive that spanned 11 plays and 71 yards. Key contributions came from running back Zach Charbonnet, who rushed for 24 yards, and tight end Noah Fant, who added a crucial 15-yard reception. Myers capped the drive with a 27-yard field goal, giving the Seahawks an early 3-0 lead. The Bears responded in the second quarter with a sustained 13-play drive led by quarterback Caleb Williams and running back D’Andre Swift. A 24-yard pass to Swift was the highlight of the series, setting up Santos’ 42-yard field goal to level the score. However, Seattle reclaimed the lead late in the half when Myers drilled a 50-yarder after a methodical 8-play, 38-yard drive.

The second half turned into a defensive struggle, with neither team able to generate consistent offensive momentum. The Seahawks’ defensive line, led by Uchenna Nwosu and Dre’Mont Jones, applied relentless pressure on Caleb Williams, sacking him multiple times and forcing hurried throws. On the other side, the Bears’ defense, featuring standout performances from Montez Sweat and Kyler Gordon, managed to disrupt Seattle’s rhythm but couldn’t capitalize offensively. Both teams punted frequently as drives fizzled out due to sacks, penalties, and tight coverage.

The game’s defining moment came in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. Trailing 6-3, the Bears mounted a last-ditch drive, but Tariq Woolen intercepted Williams’ deep pass intended for D.J. Moore, sealing the Seahawks’ victory. Despite a valiant effort, Chicago’s offensive inefficiency, including a 33% third-down conversion rate and seven sacks allowed, proved costly.

Statistically, Seattle’s Geno Smith completed 17 of 23 passes for 160 yards, while Charbonnet led the ground game with 57 yards on 15 carries. Noah Fant and DK Metcalf combined for 85 receiving yards. For Chicago, Williams threw for 122 yards but struggled with accuracy and protection. Swift added 53 rushing yards, and Moore was the leading receiver with 54 yards.

This game underscored the Seahawks’ ability to win in tough conditions, relying on disciplined defense and special teams. For the Bears, it was a missed opportunity, with their offensive line and execution under pressure falling short. Myers’ clutch field goals and Woolen’s game-sealing interception were the highlights of a gritty battle that kept fans on edge until the final whistle.

Defender Rodriguez’s brace powers Mohun Bagan Super Giant past 10-man Punjab FC to consolidate standing at top of the table

New Delhi, December 26: Mohun Bagan Super Giant returned to winning ways with a 3-1 – after falling behind, triumph over Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season tonight.

Punjab FC struck first, courtesy of a great strike from Ricky Shabong whereas the Mariners retaliated with a strong second-half performance which saw Alberto Rodriguez score a brace while Jamie Maclaren converted from the spot.

It was a swift start for the hosts as Nikhil Prabhu tried his luck from long range and struck the crossbar, handing the Mohun Bagan Super Giant defenders and Vishal Kaith a wake-up call early on. In the 12th minute of the match, the visitors were again caught ball-watching and this time Punjab FC made them pay, courtesy of a brilliant solo effort from Ricky Shabong. The young midfielder found a pocket of space on the left flank and drove forward. He eventually nestled the ball into the net past Kaith as the defenders failed to close down the space in the penalty area.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant almost came up with the equaliser when Asish Rai found himself in space and made a great volley on target. But Punjab FC custodian Ravi Kumar was alert to the danger as he parried it away. While the Mariners were clearly lacking a creative outlet on the field, Punjab FC’s all-Indian backline also made life difficult for Jason Cummings and Maclaren upfront. The most impressive of the lot was Pramveer Singh, who became the youngest player to start an ISL match at the age of 17 years and 189 days.

The second half started strongly for the visitors as Rodriguez rose highest from a corner delivered by Cummings to turn in the equaliser in the 48th minute. It was an excellent delivery as the Spaniard reacted before Ravi Kumar to head it home. This was Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s seventh goal from a corner this season, the highest in the competition.

Three minutes later, things turned from bad to worse for Punjab FC as Ezequiel Vidal was penalised for a challenge on Liston Colaco. He was initially booked for the foul and was later sent off for dissent, reducing the hosts to 10 men.

Jose Molina’s men were rewarded for their persistent pressure as the referee pointed to the spot after Anirudh Thapa was brought down in the penalty area. Maclaren stood up to the spot and hammered it home, handing Mohun Bagan Super Giant the lead in the 63rd minute. Eventually, they scored the third goal in the 69th minute when Thapa turned creator following a corner and found Rodriguez in space in the penalty area. The Spaniard made no mistake in completing his brace.

Molina turned to Sahal Abdul Samad in the 78th minute replacing Maclaren and he almost increased the lead but his effort was parried away by Ravi Kumar. Eventually, the visitors did enough to secure all three points as they ended their year five points clear atop, with 29 points as compared to the second-placed Bengaluru FC’s 24.

Key Player of the Match

Alberto Rodriguez (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)

The Spanish defender scored two crucial headers to bring the visitors back into the game in the second half. Rodriguez also held his lines brilliantly after conceding early on. He clocked three interceptions and two clearances while completing 43 out of 49 attempted passes.

What next for both teams?

Both teams will now play in the new year, with Mohun Bagan Super Giant returning home to host Hyderabad FC next on January 2 whereas Punjab FC will lock horns against Kerala Blasters FC on January 5.

Patna Pirates Complete PKL 11 Semi-final Lineup with Commanding 31-23 Victory Over U Mumba

Pune, December 26, 2024: In the decisive eliminator 2 clash at the Pro Kabaddi League Season 11, Patna Pirates demonstrated their championship pedigree with a convincing 31-23 win over U Mumba at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex on Thursday night. Securing the last remaining spot in the semi-finals, they were led by the exceptional performance of Ayan Lohchab and his 10 points (8 raid points), while Gurdeep scored a High 5, keeping their opponents quiet throughout the whole game. The win set up an exciting clash in Semi-final 2, against the in-form Dabang Delhi K.C.

An ALL OUT inflicted upon U Mumba eight and a half minutes into the match gave the Patna Pirates a very strong start as the three-time PKL Champions. This came after Devank Dalal was off the mat at the start of the match, but Ayan Lohchab stepped to the fore. He was well supported by his defenders, as the likes of Ajit Chouhan and Rohit Raghav were kept quiet throughout the first phase of the clash.

U Mumba upped the ante in the second phase of the game in a bid to equal the score but to no avail. Ajit Chouhan was kept in check by the likes of Gurdeep and Ankit, while Ayan carried the Patna Pirates’ attacking unit. A second ALL OUT was forced upon U Mumba, hampering their hard work with two minutes left to the end of the first half. The score eventually read 17-11 at the half-time stage.

As the second half commenced, Ayan continued his attacking forays. But this was not Ayan’s only contribution for Patna Pirates, as he executed a crucial Super Tackle with a perfectly timed knee hold that pinned Ajit Chouhan to the mat. While Amirmohammad Zafardanesh managed to claw back a point for U Mumba with a swift hand touch on the left corner, the match remained finely balanced as the teams headed into the second timeout.

In a crucial do-or-die raid, Devank, despite his limited involvement throughout the match, proved his mettle by successfully evading Rinku’s challenge against a three-man U Mumba defence. Although substitute raider M Dhanasekar managed to secure two points for U Mumba, the Patna Pirates’ tactical decision to run down the clock proved effective, leaving U Mumba struggling to accumulate points at the necessary pace to mount a comeback, as the three-time champions confirmed their place in semi-final 2, where they will face Dabang Delhi K.C.

Brilliant Bhavani Rajput Breaks Jaipur Pink Panthers’ Hearts as UP Yoddhas Storm into Semi-Final of PKL Season 11

Pune, 26 December, 2024: It was a one-sided affair to kick start the PKL Season 11 Playoffs, as the UP Yoddhas produced a scintillating display of kabaddi, to confirm their Semi-Final berth, at the expense of the Jaipur Pink Panthers, in Eliminator 1, at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, in Balewadi, Pune. The UP Yoddhas won the contest 46-18, with Bhavani Rajput (12 points) and Hitesh with High-5 playing starring roles. The UP Yoddhas will now face the Haryana Steelers in Semi-Final 1 on Friday.

It was a cautious start to the Playoff stages, with both the Jaipur Pink Panthers and UP Yoddhas taking their time to get going. While all eyes were on Jaipur Pink Panthers’ Arjun Deshwal in the early exchanges, the duo of Bhavani Rajput and Bharat put the UP Yoddhas out in front. It took the UP Yoddhas just 7 minutes to land their first ALL OUT of the contest, which propelled them into a 6-point lead.

The UP Yoddhas’ superb start saw them pick up a 9-point lead within the first 10 minutes, which left the Jaipur Pink Panthers on the backfoot. The dominance continued as the half wore on. Bhavani Rajput was leading the way in attack while the defenders were giving him a solid platform. The UP Yoddhas defence seemed impregnable with Hitesh, Sumit and Mahender Singh holding fort. And with just over a minute to go in the first half, the UP Yoddhas’ defence landed a second ALL OUT. At the half-time break, the UP Yoddhas led 23-8.

The UP Yoddhas held onto the momentum in the early phases of the second half as well, as they built on their lead, making it tougher for the Jaipur Pink Panthers. Within the first few minutes, Bhavani Rajput completed his Super 10, whilst Hitesh, Sumit and Gagan Gowda too were raking in the points. Jaipur Pink Panthers looked deflated, as their raiders weren’t able to get going, and the defenders were under quite a bit of pressure. At the half hour mark, the Jaipur Pink Panthers were 26 points behind.

A third ALL OUT from the UP Yoddhas piled on the misery on the Jaipur Pink Panthers. The Season 9 champions had a few good moments after that, but the UP Yoddhas were too strong on the day, and romped over the line, and into the Semi-Finals, where they will face the Haryana Steelers.

Manchester City and Everton Share the Spoils in Premier League Stalemate

Manchester City 1 – 1 Everton | Premier League 2024-25

The Premier League’s high-stakes fixture between Manchester City and Everton at the Etihad Stadium lived up to its billing as a fiercely contested encounter. Pep Guardiola’s side, aiming to cement their dominance, were held to a one-all draw by a resilient Everton outfit led by Sean Dyche. With goals from Bernardo Silva and Iliman Ndiaye, the match unfolded as a gripping spectacle of missed opportunities, defensive heroics, and tactical intrigue.

First Half:

The game began under floodlights with both teams feeling the pressure of delivering a result. Manchester City started assertively, their intricate passing probing for openings against Everton’s compact defensive setup. Josko Gvardiol came close to giving the home side an early lead in the third minute when his header ricocheted off the post. Moments later, Bernardo Silva whipped in a dangerous cross, but Erling Haaland’s effort was blocked by Everton’s defense.

City’s persistence paid off in the fourteenth minute when Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock. Receiving a perfectly weighted pass from Jérémy Doku, Silva unleashed a clinical left-footed strike that nestled into the bottom right corner. The Etihad roared as City looked poised to dominate.

However, Everton’s response was swift. Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucouré orchestrated counterattacks, unsettling City’s defense. In the thirty-sixth minute, Iliman Ndiaye capitalized on a defensive lapse to equalize. A slick move saw Ndiaye place a powerful shot into the top right corner, leaving Ederson with no chance. The half ended evenly poised at one goal apiece.

Second Half:

Manchester City resumed with intent, pressing high and creating several chances. Early in the half, Savinho’s curling effort forced a sharp save from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The turning point came in the fifty-third minute when City were awarded a penalty after Savinho was fouled in the box by Vitalii Mykolenko. Erling Haaland stepped up, but Pickford guessed correctly, diving to his left to deny the Norwegian striker.

City introduced Kevin De Bruyne in the seventy-fifth minute to inject creativity, but Everton held firm. Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic saw their efforts blocked as Everton’s defenders, led by James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, remained resolute. Despite relentless pressure, City’s attempts to find a late winner were thwarted.

Everton, meanwhile, relied on counterattacks, with Ndiaye and substitute Armando Broja threatening in transition. In the eighty-third minute, Branthwaite’s header from a Jack Harrison cross required a stunning save from Ederson to preserve parity.

Key Moments and Tactical Analysis:

  1. Bernardo Silva’s Goal (Fourteenth Minute): JĂŠrĂŠmy Doku’s incisive run and Silva’s precision showcased City’s attacking prowess. The interplay between City’s midfield and forward line demonstrated their ability to exploit tight spaces.
  2. Iliman Ndiaye’s Equalizer (Thirty-sixth Minute): Everton’s goal was a masterclass in counterattacking football. Ndiaye’s composure in front of goal highlighted his growing importance in Everton’s attacking setup.
  3. Haaland’s Missed Penalty (Fifty-third Minute): A rare lapse from City’s talisman underscored the fine margins in football. Pickford’s save was a testament to his reflexes and ability to perform under pressure.
  4. Defensive Masterclass by Everton: Tarkowski and Branthwaite were instrumental in shutting down City’s attacking waves, making crucial interceptions and blocks.

Player Performances:

  • Manchester City: Bernardo Silva was City’s standout performer, dictating play and scoring a superb goal. JĂŠrĂŠmy Doku’s pace troubled Everton throughout, while Kevin De Bruyne’s cameo added dynamism. Haaland, despite his missed penalty, was a constant aerial threat.
  • Everton: Iliman Ndiaye’s equalizer epitomized his clinical finishing. Jordan Pickford’s penalty save and multiple stops were crucial. Tarkowski and Branthwaite’s defensive partnership provided stability, while Gueye controlled the midfield.

Final Whistle and Summary:

The draw leaves Manchester City frustrated as they drop valuable points in their title pursuit. For Everton, the result is a morale-boosting point against formidable opposition. Pep Guardiola’s side dominated possession but lacked the cutting edge, while Sean Dyche’s men showed grit and determination to withstand City’s onslaught.

As the Premier League unfolds, this match serves as a reminder of the league’s unpredictability. Both teams will reflect on what could have been, but for now, the points are shared.

‘HIL propelled us to greater heights, same can be expected for the Women’s Team,’ says Soorma Hockey Club Harmanpreet Singh

Rourkela, December 26, 2024: Indian men’s hockey team captain and star drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh has expressed his excitement as he prepares to lead Soorma Hockey Club in the upcoming Hero Hockey India League (HIL) season, set to commence on December 28, 2024.

Harmanpreet Singh became the most expensive player in HIL history after being acquired by Soorma Hockey Club for ₹78 lakh during the recent auction and is eager to bring his experience and drag flicking prowess to the franchise.

“I’m thrilled to begin this new chapter of Indian Hockey as a Soorma Hockey Club player and compete in the Hero Hockey India League. The league provides a fantastic platform for players to showcase their skills, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s success this season,” he commented.

The Hero Hockey India League, returning after a hiatus, promises to deliver high-octane action and showcase top-tier talent from around the world. While the Hero Hockey India League is restarting after a seven-year hiatus, the return of the league is accompanied by the commencement of a Women’s League, the very first of its kind in India.

“The impact of the HIL can be seen to this day in the Indian Men’s Hockey Team. The Team’s success in the Olympics is due to the exposure the League provided us, at a young age. Rubbing shoulders with players you look up to and competing with and against them on a daily basis improved us more than we could imagine. With the Women’s HIL also commencing this time I am certain that it will propel the Indian Women’s Hockey Team to greater heights as well in the future,” he added.

The Soorma Hockey Club is coached by Jeroen Baart, with Indian hockey legend Sardar Singh serving as a mentor. Harmanpreet’s impressive track record includes scoring 205 goals in 234 appearances for the national senior side and he will aim to replicate the same in the HIL along with world class teammates like Vivek Sagar Prasad, Gurjant Singh, Victor Wegnez, and Jeremy Hayward.

“The HIL is going to be a great experience for us all. It is poised to be an exciting competition that will pitch us against our international teammates and challenge us to bring our A-game. Playing in front of passionate fans and representing Soorma Hockey Club is a tremendous honour, and I am eager to give my best to achieve success for the team,” Harmanpreet concluded.

‘HIL will take Indian Hockey to the top and help us stay there,’ says UP Rudras’ forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay

Rourkela, 25 December 2024: As the excitement builds for the return of the Hero Hockey India League (HIL), Lalit Kumar Upadhyay of the UP Rudras is gearing up in Rourkela, training with his new team to face the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers in less than a week. A seasoned forward for the Indian Men’s Hockey Team and a two-time Olympic Bronze medallist, Lalit credits the HIL for shaping his early career and providing the opportunity to fight for his place on the national team.

“When the league was introduced, it was a huge platform for Indian players. It offered us a chance to showcase our talent and directly make it to the squad,” Lalit remarked. He highlighted the financial and professional support the league has provided, noting its instrumental role in elevating the sport’s profile. “It gave us the experience of playing with legends we had only seen on TV. Sharing the field with such icons boosted our confidence and made us more comfortable in competitive scenarios. India’s performance graph went up after the first HIL, and with the league returning now, I am sure it will take us to the top and help us stay there.”

Lalit’s journey with the Kalinga Lancers began in 2013 during the previous edition of the HIL. This platform allowed him to showcase his skills on an international stage and carve a path to the Indian Men’s Hockey Team. Reflecting on his time in the league, Lalit shared his three most cherished HIL moments:

“I was out of the Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team for the Junior World Cup in 2013, but as a Kalinga Lancer, I scored one of my best goals against the UP team. It was one of the best goals of the season and a key reason why I was selected for the Indian team at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014,” he said.

“My second-best memory is from the 2017 season. Again, as part of the Kalinga Lancers, I scored notable goals and helped the team win the title. We had several close games, many going down to penalty shootouts. In the semi-final match against the UP Wizards, I bypassed the Great Wall of Indian Hockey, PR Sreejesh, to score a crucial goal.”

“But my best moment was when the Kalinga Lancers decided to retain me and showed faith in me to lead the line as a young forward. That trust was reassuring and built the confidence I carry to this day,” the 31-year-old added.

As the Hero HIL returns, Lalit is joined by fellow Olympic Bronze medallists Hardik Singh and Simranjeet Singh, along with international stars like Lars Balk, Floris Wortelboer, and Sam Ward in the UP Rudras. Together, they aim to guide and nurture the next generation of Indian hockey players while putting on a spectacular show for spectators in Rourkela, Odisha.

Looking ahead to the season, Lalit expressed optimism about team dynamics and the role of franchise support. “With a new team, it takes time to adjust, but as tournaments progress, bonding improves naturally. The franchise has been incredibly supportive, and the coaching staff’s expertise is invaluable in guiding us to perform at our best,” he concluded.

Inter Secure a Hard-Fought Victory Over Como in Serie A Clash

Under the iconic floodlights of Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, Inter hosted Como in an eagerly anticipated Match Day seventeen clash of the Serie A 2024-25 season. The atmosphere was electric, with fans from both sides filling the stadium with chants and energy that underscored the importance of the game. Inter, with their sights firmly set on closing the gap at the top of the table, faced a Como side determined to extend their recent run of positive results and avoid being dragged into the relegation battle. Ultimately, Inter claimed a two-nil victory, thanks to second-half goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram. The match highlighted the importance of tactical discipline, moments of individual brilliance, and the fine margins that define top-tier football.

First Half: Grit and Defense Take Center Stage

The match kicked off to a deafening roar from the passionate Inter faithful, who had packed the stands in support of their team. Como, under the guidance of manager Cesc Fabregas, began the game with an aggressive and structured approach, pressing Inter’s backline with high intensity and forcing early errors. The tactical organization of Como was evident from the outset, with Nico Paz and Gabriel Strefezza driving their offensive efforts, while Andrea Belotti’s physical presence created challenges for Inter’s defense.

Inter, led by Simone Inzaghi, faced early challenges in breaking down Como’s compact and disciplined defense. The home side’s first real opportunity came in the twelfth minute when Henrikh Mkhitaryan unleashed a curling effort from the edge of the area, narrowly missing the far post. Despite controlling possession, Inter struggled to convert their dominance into clear chances as Como’s counterattacks continued to threaten. In the seventeenth minute, Fadera’s precise cross found Van Der Brempt, whose header, though well-timed, lacked the power and direction to trouble goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

As the half progressed, Inter began to find their rhythm, with Nicolò Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu attempting to dictate the tempo in midfield. However, Como’s disciplined midfield trio, led by Sergi Roberto, effectively disrupted Inter’s buildup play. In the thirty-third minute, Denzel Dumfries squandered the best chance of the half for Inter, sending a close-range effort over the crossbar after a pinpoint low cross from Mkhitaryan. The frustration was palpable as Inter’s fans urged their team forward.

Late in the half, Federico Dimarco managed a shot on target, but it was easily saved by Como’s veteran goalkeeper, Pepe Reina. The halftime whistle blew with the scoreline still level at nil-nil. Como’s resolute defending and tactical discipline had successfully stifled Inter’s attacking prowess, setting the stage for a tense second half.

Second Half: Inter Break the Deadlock

The halftime break seemed to energize Inter, as they emerged from the tunnel with a renewed sense of urgency. Inzaghi’s tactical adjustments were immediately evident, with Inter adopting a higher tempo and utilizing their width more effectively. The breakthrough came in the forty-eighth minute when Hakan Calhanoglu delivered a superb outswinging corner. Carlos Augusto, timing his run perfectly, rose above the defense and powered a header into the back of the net. The Giuseppe Meazza erupted in celebration as the ex-Monza defender’s goal ended Como’s stubborn resistance.

The goal shifted the dynamics of the match. Como, now trailing, were forced to abandon their deep defensive setup and push higher up the pitch in search of an equalizer. This created spaces for Inter to exploit, and the home side nearly doubled their lead in the fifty-ninth minute. Denzel Dumfries delivered a dangerous cross that narrowly missed Lautaro Martinez’s outstretched boot, with Reina making a crucial intervention to keep his side in contention. Moments later, Carlos Augusto showcased his defensive prowess with a vital clearance to deny Belotti a golden opportunity at the other end.

Key Substitutions and Tactical Changes

Both managers turned to their benches as the game entered its final third. Fabregas introduced Patrick Cutrone and Luca Mazzitelli to inject energy and creativity into Como’s attack, while Inzaghi brought on Piotr Zielinski and Davide Frattesi to strengthen Inter’s midfield and maintain control of the game. Tensions began to rise, with Lucas Da Cunha and Cesc Fabregas both receiving yellow cards for dissent and fouls.

The seventy-fourth minute brought a moment of drama as Lautaro Martinez found the back of the net with a deflected shot. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, much to the disappointment of the Inter faithful. Despite the setback, the Nerazzurri remained composed and continued to apply pressure, probing Como’s defense for a decisive second goal.

Late Drama and Thuram’s Decisive Strike

As the match entered injury time, Inter delivered the final blow to secure the victory. In the ninety-second minute, substitute Piotr Zielinski played a perfectly weighted through ball to Marcus Thuram. The French forward demonstrated his composure and clinical finishing, slotting the ball past Reina with precision. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the Inter players and fans, as the result was now beyond doubt.

Thuram’s late strike highlighted his growing influence in Inter’s attack and underscored the importance of depth in Simone Inzaghi’s squad. The final whistle soon followed, confirming Inter’s hard-fought two-nil victory and sending the home crowd into rapturous applause.

Standout Performances and Tactical Mastery

Carlos Augusto’s all-around performance was a key factor in Inter’s success. Combining defensive solidity with his crucial opening goal, the versatile defender earned the Man of the Match accolade. Marcus Thuram’s late goal and dynamic presence in the final third further emphasized his importance to Inter’s attacking setup. For Como, Pepe Reina’s shot-stopping ability and Fadera’s tireless work rate stood out, showcasing the team’s resilience despite the loss.

Simone Inzaghi’s tactical adjustments proved decisive. Recognizing Como’s defensive organization in the first half, he emphasized the use of width and set pieces, which ultimately broke the deadlock. Conversely, Cesc Fabregas’s defensive game plan was effective early on but lacked the offensive threat needed to trouble Inter consistently in the second half.

Final Whistle and Implications

Inter’s two-nil victory propels them closer to the summit of Serie A, keeping the pressure on title rivals Napoli and Atalanta. With this win, they extend their league unbeaten streak and reinforce their credentials as serious title contenders. The result also underscores the depth and quality of Inzaghi’s squad, as they continue to navigate a demanding schedule.

For Como, the defeat leaves them perilously close to the relegation zone, highlighting the urgency of securing points in their upcoming fixtures. Despite the loss, their disciplined performance in the first half provides a platform to build upon as they aim to climb the standings.

The match encapsulated the essence of Serie A football—a captivating blend of tactical acumen, individual brilliance, and passionate support. As the season progresses, both teams will look to draw lessons from this encounter in pursuit of their respective goals.

However, Dabang Delhi K.C. mounted a strong comeback in the latter stages of the half. The turning point came through Ashu Malik’s Super Raid, where he scored four crucial points. Despite Gujarat’s unsuccessful review challenging a boundary line decision, Delhi’s momentum continued to build.

Ashu Malik proved particularly effective, securing multiple points through running hand touches and kicks. The Gujarat Giants’ defence, despite some strong moments, struggled to contain Dabang Delhi K.C.’s raiders in the closing minutes, who inflicted an ALL OUT on the Gujarat Giants as well. The half ended dramatically with Dabang Delhi K.C. holding a narrow 20-17 lead at the break.

NorthEast United FC score 5, come back from 2 goals down, make a statement of triumph over Hyderabad FC

Hyderabad, December 23: NorthEast United FC wrapped up their two-game-long losing streak and put in a display of confidence, by coming from two goals behind to secure a 5-2 victory against Hyderabad FC at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 tonight. Hyderabad FC, who had conceded six goals post the 60th minute mark this season prior to this match, added three more to that tally as NorthEast United FC struck thrice in the final 30-odd minutes to move two places up at the sixth spot in the points table. This was Hyderabad FC’s first loss after a nine-game-long unbeaten streak against NorthEast United FC.

Hyderabad FC pressed on the offensive from the beginning, as Edmilson Correia took the onus with a solo effort in the fifth minute. He dazzled into the box from the left flank and beat challenges from Dinesh Singh and Asheer Akhtar with some quick footwork to drill the ball into the bottom left corner to get an early lead. HFC 1 – 0 NEUFC

Seven minutes later, Cy Goddard controlled the ball impeccably in a pocket of space down the middle outside of the 18-yard box. He played a pass for Sourav K on the right flank, who’s perfectly weighted cross was met on a bounce by Correia before he dispatched it into the bottom right corner to notch his brace. HFC 2 – 0 NEUFC

However, NorthEast United FC were not overawed by the early passage of play and soon began dissecting the Hyderabad FC defence with ease. In the 18th minute, Jithin M.S. took a shot from inside the box, but the ball’s pace was cut down by a crowded box, before Guillermo Fernández lapped upon a loose ball and hammered it into the centre of the goal to cut the deficit. HFC 2 – 1 NEUFC

While the home side managed to see off the rest of the half without any major threats to goal, NorthEast United FC’s attacking onslaught picked up intensity in the second essay.

In the 54th minute, Macarton Nickson brought out a creative shot from distance, which was intended to hit the right side of the goal. The shot, however, took a deflection off Lenny Rodrigues and landed nearly in the middle of the net to equalise the scores. It was eventually awarded as an own goal by the Hyderabad FC midfielder. HFC 2 – 2 NEUFC

Seven minutes later, Guillermo got the visitors the lead, after a link-up play with Alaaeddine Ajaraie. The Hyderabad FC defence wore a slightly disoriented look when Ajaraie attempted a powerful shot from the edge of the box. The effort lacked precision, but the deflection was ably pounced upon and slotted into the bottom right corner by Guillermo. HFC 2 – 3 NEUFC

NorthEast United FC began exploring an array of chances to break down the Hyderabad FC backline thereafter. Mohammed Bemammer undertook a direct approach when he hauled in a long ball from the centre of the field, and it was met perfectly by Ajaraie, who nodded it beyond goalkeeper Karanjit Singh to secure a safe advantage for his team in the 73rd minute. HFC 2 – 4 NEUFC

Five minutes later, Alex Saji committed an error resulting in another own goal for the home team. Parthib Gogoi, who had come off the bench, received a long pass inside the box and tried to net it from an acute angle on the left flank. The effort didn’t have enough vigour behind it but Saji ended up directing it inside the net after the ball diverted off his lumping challenge, capping off a five-goal outing for the Highlanders. HFC 2 – 5 NEUFC

Key Performer of the Match

Guillermo FernĂĄndez (NorthEast United FC)

The attacking midfielder completed 16 out of his 22 attempted passes, making a solitary tackle, and scoring two important goals too.

Olympic Esports Games and Made-In-India games to drive Indian video gaming and esports in 2025

National, December 23, 2024: The Indian video gaming and esports industry experienced unprecedented growth in 2024, and this momentum is expected to continue into 2025. According to the India Market Model Report by Niko Partners, the Indian video games market is set to surpass $1 billion in 2025, with a forecasted value of $1.4 billion by 2028, growing at a five-year CAGR of 11.1%.

Arguably, the biggest highlight of the upcoming year will be the Olympic Esports Games, set to take place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Following India’s impressive performance at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where the nation secured six medals, Indian gamers now have an exciting opportunity to add to the country’s medal tally in the rapidly growing esports arena. This landmark event will not only boost the recognition of esports in India but also position the nation as an emerging powerhouse in global competitive gaming.

Recently, chess was announced as one of the titles at the Esports World Cup, boasting a substantial USD 1.5 million prize pool. India has been making waves in chess on the global stage, with grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju making history as the youngest World Champion. Now, the nation’s chess players have the opportunity to make even more history at the Esports World Cup which will be taking place in Saudi Arabia from July 31 to August 3, 2025.

Parallel to the Olympic Esports Games and Esports World Cup, the WAVES Esports Championships (WESC), officially supported by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, will be another key event to watch in 2025. The finals for three titles including Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), World Cricket Championship (WCC), and eFootball will take place at the inaugural WAVES Summit in February 2025. This event promises to kick off the year on a high note, setting the tone for an exciting year ahead, as more government-backed tournaments and initiatives are expected to further shape the Indian esports landscape.

While cricket and football continue to merge with esports through virtual titles like WCC and eFootball, 2024 also saw cricket outfits like Mumbai Indians partnering with BGMI, Gujarat Titans organizing an esports tournament, and Kolkata Knight Riders collaborating with India’s leading esports and gaming content organization, S8UL Esports. The connection between cricket and esports is likely to grow even stronger, further expanding the appeal of gaming in India.

Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and MD, NODWIN Gaming says, â€œIn 2025, we anticipate a growing overlap between mainstream sports and esports. Cricket will become more involved with the esports industry, whether through cricket esports titles or collaborations with IPL teams and cricketers. Similarly, Bollywood stars and musicians are expected to engage more actively with gaming and esports to connect with younger audiences, creating a fusion of entertainment and competitive gaming. Gaming will continue to be a strong pillar of youth entertainment with even deeper collaborations between gaming and elements like music, anime, and other youth-focused interests. NODWIN Gaming’s successful hosting of DreamHack India alongside Hyderabad Comic Con this year is a testament to this trend, and this fusion of gaming with pop culture, including music and sports, will continue to thrive.”

The rise of gamification will continue to reshape various sectors, as social media platforms, streaming services, and e-commerce giants increasingly adopt gaming features to engage users. Facebook led the charge, and now platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and even LinkedIn are embracing gamification. This trend is expected to intensify in 2025.

“The rise of gamification across sectors, will bring gaming elements into everyday life, further embedding gaming into our cultural fabric. It won’t be surprising if dating apps follow suit in the near future, incorporating gaming elements to create more engaging and interactive experiences,” further adds Akshat Rathee.

This year, there was a surge in high-profile brand collaborations within India’s gaming and esports ecosystem, with non-endemic brands taking note of the sector’s growing influence. A standout example was 8Bit Creatives, the nation’s premier esports & gaming talent management agency which secured the largest naming rights sponsorship deal in Indian gaming history with leading smartphone brand iQOO. This partnership, where 8Bit Creatives represented three teams including 8bit Esports, Reckoning Esports, and Revenant Xspark, highlights the increasing interest from mainstream brands in India’s esports scene.

Looking ahead, Animesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO, 8Bit Creatives states, â€œIn 2025, esports will continue expanding into more titles, creating opportunities for a broader range of players and audiences. As new games gain traction, regions like South Asia and MENA are expected to emerge as significant contributors to the global esports ecosystem. Content creators will play a central role in shaping fan engagement, while brands will increasingly view esports and gaming content as primary channels to connect with the ever-growing gaming-centric audience.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for India to become a global leader in video games during his Independence Day address earlier this year has further fueled optimism in the industry. In 2024, several Made-in-India games were launched, with many more in the pipeline. These games are well-positioned to represent India on the global stage, showcasing the country’s growing capabilities as a game development hub. Among these, 88 Games, the newly launched game development division of 88 Pictures, is preparing to launch three major titles, reinforcing India’s increasing influence in the global gaming landscape.

“In 2025, we expect deeper integration of cutting-edge technologies like generative AI and extended reality (XR) into game development. These technologies will reshape how games are developed and consumed, enhancing storytelling and interactivity. For 88 Games, 2025 will be pivotal as we gear up for the launch of our first PC and console game. As gaming continues to gain cultural and economic significance, we’re thrilled to contribute to this journey and help shape its future,” notes Milind D. Shinde, Founder and CEO, 88 Games.

Insights from the ‘Indian Gamer Behaviour and Market Insights’ report by Niko Partners reveal that 77.3% of PC gamers in India spent more on games in Q1 2024 compared to the previous year, surpassing mobile and console gaming growth. Steam also reported a 150% increase in new users in India from 2019 to 2024, underscoring the surge in PC gaming interest. This trend is expected to continue into 2025, with PC gaming expected to grow further in the Indian market.

“The focus will increasingly shift toward sustainability and personalization in gaming technology. Cloud gaming and AI-driven performance optimizations will also drive innovation, making gaming accessible to an even broader audience. CyberPowerPC is excited about further expanding its footprint in India, especially in emerging markets. Our goal is to empower gamers and creators with tools that elevate their experiences, from immersive gaming setups to workhorse systems for content creation,” explains Vishal Parekh, Chief Operating Officer, CyberPowerPC India.

With all these exciting developments, 2025 promises to be an even bigger and better year for India’s gaming and esports industry.
