Japan breaks India’s Paris dreams; beat hosts 1-0

Ranchi, 19th January 2024: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team lost 0-1 to Japan in a hard-fought 3rd/4th place play-off game at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024. With this loss, India finished in fourth place and missed out on qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. 

Japan set the ground running early in the game and were awarded two penalty corners within the first few minutes. Although the first one wasn’t converted, Karan Urata (6’) made sure that the second one didn’t go wasted as Japan took the lead in the first quarter. 

India was awarded a couple of penalty corners and made a few circle entries in the second quarter but were unable to convert any of the opportunities into goals as the teams left the pitch at half-time with India trailing 0-1. 

India came close to equalizing by means of a penalty corner early in the third quarter but Japan goal-keeper Akio Tanaka ensured the ball didn’t find the back of the net. The Indians kept coming at Japan but the Japanese defenders didn’t budge as they held on to their slender lead going into the final quarter. 

With the clock ticking and an Olympic qualification on the line, the Indian team found a new gear and were awarded one penalty corner after another. India came close to equalizing repeatedly but a relentless Japanese defense ensured that they would hold onto their single goal lead and win the game 1-0 to finish in third place and qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

85th Sub-Junior and Cadet TT-Day 4 

Indore, January 19: Soham Mukherjee of West Bengal defeated Teshub Dinesh of Karnataka 3-1 to win the Under-15 Boys title in the 85th UTT Sub-Junior and Cadet National Table Tennis Championships and hoist the trophy at the Abhay Prashal Indoor Stadium today.

Soham was quick, precise and finished well, which ultimately hastened his win in the final. Teshub played well in parts, but several unforced errors contributed to his downfall as he lacked consistency.

The Karnataka boy was not his usual self, while Soham was more focused. Though he dropped the second game to Teshub, the West Bengal paddler picked up steam in the third and continued with it to complete the task.

In the first semifinal, Soham emerged as the best and beat Arya 3-1. Though the two shared a game each, Soham outplayed his teammate Arya in the third and fourth to enter the final.

In the second, Karnataka’s Teshub kept cool and a calm head to overcome Debraj Bhattacharjee in a tense match, the first three games finishing on extended points. The lanky left-hander showed maturity to win the fourth and fifth to earn his spot in the final.

Aditya Das, who played match after match, was at ease in the Under-13 Boys’ final when he beat Akash Rajavelu of Tamil Nadu 3-0. There was hardly any challenge from the latter as a determined Aditya added to the doubles title he had won earlier in the day. His ball sense and presence of mind in placements surpassed his age, and it was visible time and again in the final.

In the semifinals, Aditya found a resilient Aarav and the match got dragged on to the last game. Aditya won 3-2, especially in the fifth game on extended points. On the other hand, Akash had it easy against Veer Balmiki, despite dropping a game in the second semi-final.

Ashwajit wins crown

M. Ashwajith of Tamil Nadu showed consistency throughout, including in the final, to become the Under-11 Boys National champion. His encounter with Delhi’s Dhrityaman Pandey proved easy, as he defeated his rival in straight games. 

But Arav Dutta of NCOE stretched him in the semifinal. The players won their alternate games and kept themselves until the decider, which Ashwajith won. Even Talasila Sai Manavith of Andhra Pradesh gave anxious moments to Dhrityaman, but the Delhi boy with steady nerves overcame him in the last two games.

Double for Bengal

In the all-Bengal final of the U-15 Boys’ doubles, Soham Mukherjee and Rupam Sardar defeated Aditya Das and Debraj Bhattacharjee 3-1 for the title. In the Under-13 Boys’ doubles final, West Bengal’s Aditya combined with Himon Mondal to ensure they won the title. In the process, they beat Vatsal Duklan and Viren Patil 3-2. Unfortunately, the PSPBA duo failed to cash in on the 2-0 lead and went down to their rivals.

1) Hugo Calderano (World No. 6, Brazil):
The World No. 6 Hugo Calderano is one of the biggest attractions of the upcoming WTT Star Contender Goa 2024. The 27-year-old paddler from Brazil is known for his explosive play style and remarkable agility. With the career-best ranking of three in January 2022, Calderano became the first-ever Pan American player to earn a place in the Top-5 of the world rankings and was also the first Brazilian and Latin American to reach the quarter-finals of table tennis in the Olympic Games. Calderano had a good 2023, winning WTT Contender Durban and WTT Contender Doha along with becoming the first three-time consecutive table tennis champion at the Pan American Games. Calderano promises to be a force to reckon with in India’s biggest international table tennis tournament. His consistent performances on the global stage make him a top contender for the men’s singles title.

2) Yubin Shin (World No. 9, Korea Republic):
Known as the prodigy back in Korea, the 19-year-old Yubin Shin enters the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024 after an exceptional 2023 wherein she won four medals, including one gold and three bronze, at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Besides Asian Games heroics, she also won the titles at the WTT Contender Lagosand and WTT Contender Lima in the same year. A rising star in the women’s table tennis, Shin has the ability to adapt quickly and deliver under pressure which makes her a strong contender in the women’s singles category. She will also be competing in the women’s doubles with Jihee Jeon and in mixed doubles with Jonghoon Lim. Having finished her campaign in the round-of-32 in the last edition, Shin will look to turn things around and grab the title when she steps onto the arena in Goa.

3) Felix Lebrun (World No. 8, France):
The rising star Felix Lebrun is one to watch out for in the tournament. Hailing from a new generation of talented players, the 17-year-old Felix’s dynamic playing style and tactical prowess have gained attention. Felix won the bronze medal in doubles at the World Tour Finals 2023 and a bronze medal in the team event of the European Championships 2023. Felix’s brother World No. 23 Alexis will also compete in this prestigious tournament. The French youngster Felix, who reached semi-finals in the last edition, will be aiming for a better finish during his return at the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024. He will also compete in the mixed doubles event along with Prithika Pavade.

4) Dimitrij Ovtcharov (World No. 13, Germany):
The former World No. 1 Dimitrij Ovtcharov is one the most experienced paddlers to appear in the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024. A legend of the game from Germany, Ovtcharov has won six Olympics medals, including two singles bronze medals in 2012 and 2020. He has also won the World Tour title, Men’s World Cup, European championships, German National Championships. Currently ranked 13 in the world, Ovtcharov is known for his trademark backhand and iconic serve that enables him to take down the best in the business. The 35-year-old seasoned campaigner will be making his debut at the WTT Star Contender Goa and is expected to present a strong challenge in the men’s singles.

5) Cheng I-Ching (World No. 18, Chinese Taipei):
The last edition’s runner up, Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching will return to Goa with an aim to get her hands on the title this time around. Cheng will not only compete in the women’s singles event but will also try her hands in the women’s doubles category along with Ye Jhun Li. Currently ranked 18 in the world, Cheng is one of the most celebrated players, having played an important role in Chinese Taipei’s significant growth in table tennis. Cheng won the mixed doubles bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and was the integral part in Chinese Taipei’s bronze medal finish at the World Championships in 2016 and 2022. She also secured a singles silver medal in the 2016 World Cup.

The qualifying rounds will be played on January 23 and 24 whereas the semi-finals and finals are scheduled on January 27 and 28 respectively.

Reliance Foundation’s young athletes look to impress at Khelo India Youth Games 2024

Reliance Foundation’s young athletes will be looking to make their mark at the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games, which will be held in the state of Tamil Nadu across four cities from January 19 to 31. A total of six athletes – Sandeep Gond, Rajendra Sidhu, Nitish Kullu, Reyan Basha, Sunita Sant, and Ommkar Prasad Nanda – will be in action at the Games.

This will be the first major event that RF athletes will be competing in 2024. The athletes will look to set the tone for the rest of the year by starting confidently in their first competition of the year.

The trio of Sandeep Gond, Rajendra Sidhu and Nitish Kullu will be competing in the men’s 100m hurdles event, Reyan Basha will take part in the men’s 100m event, Sunita Santa will take to the track in the women’s 2000m steeplechase category. Ommkar Prasad Nanda will be in action in the men’s shot put and hammer throw events. Rajendra and Nitish were a part of the Odisha team which won Gold in the previous edition in the men’s 4x100m relay with a new Khelo India Youth Games record.

Speaking before the competition, Martin Owens, Head Coach, Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High-Performance Centre, said, “Of our athletes, Reyan is ranked no 2 among the entrants in his category, so he is among the strongest medal contenders for us. In the hurdles, Rajendra and Nitish both medaled at the National Junior and Youth Championships respectively, so both of them will be among the top contenders here. This will also be Sandeep’s last event in the U18 category before he makes the step up to the U20 category, so he will be looking to finish on a high.”

“Ommkar also medaled at the National Juniors, where he was among the youngest athletes, so he will derive confidence from that. This will be his first U18 competition, so it will be interesting to see how he steps up. Sunita was an absolute surprise package as she won bronze at the Junior Nationals in just her second race after taking up the steeplechase event. Our athletes have had the best kind of preparations and we are confident of them doing their best at the Khelo India Youth Games.”

‘We’ll try to win as many games as possible in front of our home fans,’ says Telugu Titans’ Defender Parvesh Bhainswal

HYDERABAD, 19th January 2024: The Telugu Titans will be looking to turn their fortunes during their home leg from 19-24 January 2024. The Telugu Titans’ Defender Parvesh Bhainswal expressed that the team will certainly receive a boost from its home fans in Hyderabad, “The Telugu Titans fans will support us even if we win or lose. The fans will certainly turn up in large numbers in Hyderabad and cheer for us this week. We will receive confidence from our fans during our home leg.”

The Defender further added, “We are very happy to be here in Hyderabad and we’ll try to win as many games as possible in front of our home fans.”

Bhainswal also said that the Titans will have to improve their all-round game in order to pick up a few victories. They have won just one game in Season 10 so far. “We are trying to improve our game in the raiding and defence departments then only we can win games. We have to get better in all aspects as a team,” said the Defender.

Pawan Sehrawat has been the lone warrior for the Titans with 107 points in 11 matches this season. When asked about playing with him, Bhainswal said, “Pawan is a great raider and he finished as the best raider in Season Six, Seven and Eight. I have played a lot of games with him as we play together in the Railways team in Senior Nationals. It’s been really nice to play with him this season.”

The Telugu Titans will be up against Bengaluru Bulls, U.P. Yoddhas, Haryana Steelers and Tamil Thalaivas during the Hyderabad leg.

Sreeja wins WTT US Feeder title

Indore, January 19: Two-time National champion Sreeja Akula claimed her first international title when she defeated world No. 46 Lily Zhang of the USA 3-0 (11-6, 18-16, 11-5) in the women’s singles final of the WTT Feeder Corpus Christi 2024 last night, marking a bright beginning to the new calendar year.

On her way to the final, the woman from Hyderabad beat French women Stephanie Loeuillette 3-1 and upstaged top-seed Amy Wang 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 11-1, 6-11, 11-9) in the see-saw quarterfinals.

Ranked No. 94 in the world, the 25-year-old Indian led 2-1. But she let the world No. 37 claw her way back to level the score. However, Sreeja grabbed the last points in the decider to outsmart her.

In the semifinals, she ran into Jiangshan Gao, another US paddler of Chinese origin, and led 2-1. Precariously placed at 1-2, the US player staged a fine recovery to level the score in the fourth extended game at 12-10. After that, she finished the close fifth game to win 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9 and enter the final.

But the final turned out as a one-sided affair. After winning the stretched second game on the sixth game point against Lily, Sreeja wrapped it up for the top-of-podium finish. 

“I am immensely pleased, and my efforts got me where I wanted to be. It’s my maiden international title, and I have earned it after two close calls in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the tournament. Both (Amy and Lily) were higher-ranked players and played well against them,” said the Hyderabad woman.

Ghana and Egypt Draw 2-2 in CAF Africa Cup of Nations Group C Match

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – In a thrilling Group C encounter of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023, Ghana and Egypt played out a 2-2 draw at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Mohammed Kudus starred for Ghana with a brace, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.

Ghana took the lead through West Ham United attacker Mohammed Kudu, who capitalized on Abdul Salis Samed’s assist with a long-range effort. Egypt responded with Omar Marmoush equalizing in the 69th minute after capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Inaki Williams and beating goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

Kudus restored Ghana’s lead just two minutes later, curling a shot from the edge of the penalty box into the far post, aided by a deflection that left goalkeeper Mohammed El Shenawy with no chance. However, Egypt showed resilience, with Trezeguet Mostafa Mohammed securing an equalizer in the 73rd minute to level the score at 2-2.

The draw leaves Ghana with just one point from two games, setting up a crucial final group match against Mozambique on January 22. For Egypt, the comeback demonstrated their tenacity and ability to respond under pressure.

The match showcased both teams’ attacking flair and resilience, making it a memorable clash in the Africa Cup of Nations. As the group stage continues, both Ghana and Egypt will look to build on this performance in their quest for advancement in the tournament.

Road to Chengdu 2025: contest opens globally to select best logo, mascot and slogan

On 28 December 2024, the Chengdu 2025 Organising Committee (OC) initiated a national contest to create the logo, mascot and slogan of The World Games 2025.  

Despite already receiving a great number of national submissions, the OC is opening the contest internationally on 20 January 2024, to appeal to the world’s creativity to develop the visual identity of the landmark event next year.  

Ideas and designs are expected to be submitted by art & design students, professionals from design companies or independent graphic designers.  

Submissions from both China and overseas will be welcome to participate individually or as part of a team, until the tender deadline on 28 February 2024.  

The guidelines provided by the OC say that the logo, mascot and slogan of the upcoming TWG 2025 should embody the spirit of sport and Chinese cultural values and reflect the history and culture of Chengdu as the host city.  

The logo needs to be innovative and aesthetically pleasing, elegant, creative, and easily recognisable. 

Furthermore, the new visual identity elements should be adaptable, and versatile, allowing for extended design options to suit different branding and marketing needs. 

The mascot’s requirements included criteria such as being “lively, adorable, amiable, and able to get universal recognition from diverse audiences”, and all designs should comply with IWGA’s marketing guidelines.  Take a look at the requirements  document here.

All elements will be available both in English and Chinese and remain as a sustainable legacy for The World Games.

Squash: Egyptian Trio Score Big Wins On Day Two of J.P Morgan Tournament of Champions

Egyptian trio Salma Hany, Malak Khafagy and Yahya Elnawasany claimed impressive wins on day two of the 2024 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions as they claimed places in round three of the PSA World Tour Platinum event.

Khafagy was first to secure her place in round three, a first appearance in the last sixteen for the 19-year-old. She defeated Hong Kong’s Tomato Ho in straight games at the Nicol Squash Club, avenging her 3-2 loss from the New Zealand Open. 

Khafagy now faces top seed and idol Nour ElSherbini on Saturday and can’t wait to step onto court with the World No.1.

“Last time I played her [Tomato Ho] I was 2-0 up and I lost so I was devastated with the way I dealt with the match,” she said.

“Now I won in three, I’m so proud with how solid I was and I’m excited. Coming here I wasn’t expecting anything and I wanted to play my best and I wanted to enjoy it. Now I’ve beaten them both, it means everything to me and I super overwhelmed and I don’t know how to process everything right now!

“Nour [El Sherbini] is my role model and we grew up watching her at the same club. We train together, I see her every day, she’s like an older sister to me and I’m super excited to play with her. It’s a pleasure to be on court with her.”

Compatriot Salma Hany was up against No.5 seed Georgina Kennedy in her opening match of the tournament. A tough match on paper for both players, which proved to be the case on the all-glass court in Grand Central Station.

Hany battled back from 2-1 down to down World No.6 Kennedy and reach the last sixteen of a Platinum event for the fifth time this season.

After overcoming Switzerland’s Nicolas Mueller in round one, Yahya Elnawasany scored another big win on day two as he defeated compatriot Aly Abou Eleinen to book his place in the third round. Three tight games went the way of the younger Egyptian, who will now face No.3 seed Paul Coll.

Day three will see the remaining round two matches take place with selected action taking place on the iconic all-glass court inside Grand Central Terminal. Glass court action will be available to watch live on SQUASHTV .

For India, the remaining group match becomes crucial, as they will aim to bounce back and secure a victory against Syria. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, will look to build on their momentum as they continue their campaign in the AFC Asian Cup.

Australia Clinches 1-0 Victory Over Syria in AFC Asian Cup, Advances to Knockout Stage

Doha: Australia secured their place in the knockout rounds of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Syria in Group B. The match, held at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on Thursday, saw Jackson Irvine scoring the only goal in the 59th minute, his second of the tournament.

The win, which followed Australia’s opening victory over India, places them at the top of the Group B standings with one round remaining. Their advancement to the Round of 16 was confirmed after Uzbekistan defeated India 3-0 in the group’s second match on the same day.

The top two teams from each group, along with the four third-placed sides with the best records, progress in the tournament. Australia’s solid performance in the group stage, backed by Irvine’s timely goal, demonstrates their readiness for the challenges ahead in the knockout phase.

For Syria, the loss means they will have to regroup and focus on their remaining group match to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. The game against Australia was a tight contest, with both teams displaying determination and skill.

Australia’s success in this match highlights their status as a strong contender in the AFC Asian Cup, building on their history of competitive performances in the tournament. As they prepare for the knockout stages, the team will look to maintain their winning momentum and aim for a deep run in the competition.

USA, Spain, Germany and Belgium women book tickets to Paris at Olympic qualifiers

Lausanne, Switzerland: It was mission accomplished for four women’s teams as the USA, Spain, Germany and Belgium successfully secured their places in Paris by winning their respective semi-finals at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Ranchi, India and Valencia, Spain on Thursday.

Losing semi-finalists Japan, Ireland, India and Great Britain will still have a chance to qualify if they can win their respective bronze-medal playoffs.

And while they may have already booked their Olympic tickets, there is still work to be done as the USA will take on Germany in the final of the tournament in Ranchi on Friday and Spain will play Belgium in Valencia on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in the men’s FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Muscat, Oman, Germany, New Zealand, Great Britain and Pakistan took one step closer to Paris by booking their places in the semifinals with victories on Thursday.

Ranchi (W)

It was crunch day in Ranchi as two Olympic places were up for grabs for the winning semi-finalists as the USA took on Japan and India faced Germany.

The USA and Japan produced an enthralling match where neither team was able to assert full control. Japan breached the American defence for the first time in the tournament, opening the scoring with a scrappy penalty corner rebound in the third quarter. The USA then fought back in a thrilling final quarter, scoring two penalty corner goals to advance to the final and book their spot at the Paris Olympic Games. Japan can still qualify for Paris by finishing third and will be looking for better accuracy from their penalty corners in their bronze medal match against India.

USA captain Ashley Hoffman said afterwards: “I am without words… It still doesn’t feel real that we’re going to Paris. After not qualifying last time in India, we came and honestly I think we put that to bed… We were just so present this whole tournament and I’m so proud of this group.”

Germany prevailed in a riveting high-paced encounter against the Indian home team. The Germans couldn’t find a goal despite dominating the opening encounters and India struck first with a penalty corner at the end of the first quarter. India carried some momentum into the second period and Germany had to scramble repeatedly before equalising on the stroke of halftime. It looked as though the Germans were safe when Charlotte Stapenhorst bagged her second goal on 57 minutes but India came back with a penalty corner goal two minutes later. The drama continued in the shootout with the teams still level after five attempts, and it took an audacious finish by Lisa Nolte to give Germany the 4-3 win, sending them on to the final and the Paris Olympics.

An elated Nolte said afterwards: “I’m very happy, I’m so proud of the team, it’s difficult to find the right words. The match wasn’t as good as we expected, it was a tough game, India was a strong opponent and our defence was good but we didn’t use our chances. But in the end, we are the winner, that’s the main thing and I’m so, so proud.”

In the day’s other 5th to 8th place playoff matches in Ranchi, Italy and Chile both enjoyed periods of dominance in an entertaining encounter. Chili scored first but Italy drew level thanks to an Antonella Bruni field goal. The Italians then took the lead through a brilliant individual goal from Federica Carta but Paula Valdivia found the equaliser for Chile to take the match to a shootout where Italy prevailed.

New Zealand did all the playing against Czechia and could easily have notched up a big win, but they failed to convert from 10 penalty corners and the Czechs defended bravely. New Zealand eventually secured the win with two field goals in the final three minutes to advance to the 5th place playoff.

Valencia (W)

Over in Valencia, the home side, Spain, took on Ireland and Belgium faced off against Great Britain in the all-important semi-final showdowns.

Spain and Ireland put on a defensive masterclass in a thrilling match where neither team was able to score in regulation time. Spain were flawless in winning the ensuing shootout 3-0 and advanced to the final, so booking their place in Paris. Ireland are left to rue their missed penalty corners as they head into the third-place playoff with their Olympic dream at stake.

Player of the match Lucia Jimenez said afterwards: “First of all I want to congratulate and wish good luck to the Ireland team – they were incredible, they play really good hockey and they deserve a spot as well. It was a fight. These games are like this… we are really happy.” 

Belgium’s dominance in the third quarter proved to be the difference as they prevailed 3-2 in a tightly contested match with Great Britain in the other semi-final in Valencia. That sent Belgium through to the final and the Paris Olympics, while Great Britain’s Olympic hopes rest on a third-place encounter against Ireland.

“I’m super, super-happy and super-proud of how my team played super-good,” said player of the match Barbara Nelen whose side will be returning to the Olympic Games for the first time in 12 years. “Finally, after 12 years, it’s better late than never,” she added.

In the 5th to 8th place playoff matches, Juliani Din enjoyed an energetic 200th cap for a highly motivated Malaysian side against a Korean team that struggled to find a spark and failed to convert any of their numerous opportunities in the first half. Hyejin Cho eventually broke the deadlock with a field goal for Korea, and they added two penalty corners for a difficult 3-0 win.

In the final match of the day, Canada had to work hard for their 2-0 victory over Ukraine, with their first goal coming just before the end of the third quarter. The Canadians will now take on Korea for 5th place while Ukraine will play Malaysia for 7th. 

Muscat (M)

It was an action-packed final day of men’s pool matches at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Oman’s capital, Muscat.

Germany were in control throughout in their 3-0 win against Chile. Two penalty corner goals saw them 2-0 up by halftime and Justus Weigand added the third in the final quarter to secure top spot in Group B and a place in the semi-finals. 

New Zealand went into their match with Canada assured of advancing to the semi-finals after the result earlier in the day had ended Chile’s hopes. The Black Sticks controlled the match for a comfortable 4-0 win – all their goals coming from open play – to advance to the final four.

Also sealing their spot in the semi-finals were Great Britain who romped home 6-0 in their match against China. Sam Ward celebrated his 100th cap for Great Britain by scoring a brace, with Zachary Wallace also scoring two of the six goals. The result sees the British finishing top of Pool A to keep their Olympic dream alive.

Malaysia came out firing in their must-win encounter against Pakistan. It was a fitting way for Malaysia’s captain Marhan Jalil to mark his 300th cap for the side – in a match that had it all: end-to-end action, moments of genius, sensational strikes, a missed penalty stroke and plenty of late goal-mouth drama. Each time the Malaysians edged in front, Pakistan came back at them – coming from behind three times and eventually securing the 3-3 draw which was enough to see them through to the semi-finals after finishing second in Pool A.

Pakistan will come up against world champions Germany in their semi-final encounter on Saturday while Great Britain will take on New Zealand.
