The game saw a dramatic turnaround as Seattle trailed 3-2 in the second period before scoring four unanswered goals, showcasing their resilience and offensive prowess. Ivan Provorov scored twice for Columbus, and Kirill Marchenko added a goal and an assist, but it wasn’t enough to stop the surging Kraken.

Columbus goalie Daniil Tarasov faced challenges in net, making 29 saves but struggling to contain Seattle’s aggressive offense. The Blue Jackets, who have lost three in a row and eight of their last ten games, are looking to regroup and find consistency.

Seattle’s coach Dave Hakstol praised the team’s ability to stay composed and adapt their game plan. For the Kraken, the victory demonstrates their capacity to win high-scoring games and overcome deficits, a crucial trait for sustained success in the NHL.

The Kraken’s achievement sets a new franchise record, surpassing their previous eight-game winning streak from January 2023. Their ability to score seven goals in a game, tying with the Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs for the most in the NHL this season, underlines their offensive threat.

For the Blue Jackets, who matched Seattle’s intensity early in the game, the focus will be on improving their defensive play and goaltending to turn their fortunes around in upcoming games.

Pesce’s Overtime Heroics Lift Hurricanes Over Penguins in 3-2 Thriller

Raleigh, N.C. – Brett Pesce emerged as the hero for the Carolina Hurricanes, scoring twice including the game-winning goal in overtime, to secure a 3-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PNC Arena on Saturday. This win extends the Hurricanes’ point streak to eight games, with a record of 7-0-1 in this span.

Pesce’s decisive goal came at 1:41 of overtime, following a skillful backhand pass from Teuvo Teravainen. His earlier goal in the first period had given the Hurricanes an initial lead. Jordan Martinook also scored for Carolina, while goalie Antti Raanta made an impressive 38 saves, contributing significantly to the team’s success.

The Penguins, despite trailing 2-0, rallied in the third period with goals from Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust. Guentzel’s goal, assisted by Sidney Crosby, and Rust’s equalizer, coming late in the game, showcased Pittsburgh’s resilience. Goalie Tristan Jarry, with 32 saves, played a crucial role in keeping the Penguins in the game.

Carolina’s coach Rod Brind’Amour acknowledged the talent on the ice and the game’s high-scoring opportunities. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan expressed concern over the odd-man rushes allowed by his team, especially in the first period.

The Hurricanes took control early with Pesce’s initial goal and Martinook’s follow-up, capitalizing on Pittsburgh’s defenseman Chad Ruhwedel’s clearing attempt. The Penguins’ comeback in the third period set the stage for the dramatic finish in overtime.

Raanta’s performance, including a notable glove save on Crosby, was pivotal for the Hurricanes. His 38 saves marked his most in three seasons with the team.

This victory underscores the Hurricanes’ ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and maintain a lead. For the Penguins, the late-game rally and point earned show their competitive spirit, despite the loss.

The Hurricanes’ success in scoring from their defensemen, with 30 goals this season, was highlighted, second only to the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. The win also continued Carolina’s home winning streak against Pittsburgh, dating back to March 2019. The Penguins, on the other hand, will look to address their defensive issues in future games.

Elephants Triumph in AFCON Opener: Cote d’Ivoire 2, Guinea-Bissau 0

Cote d’Ivoire kicked off their TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau on Saturday night. The match, held in Abidjan, saw the Ivorian team, also known as the Elephants, assert their dominance early on and maintain control throughout the game.

The opening goal came just four minutes into the match, setting the tone for the rest of the evening. Seko Fofana, the Lens midfielder, seized an opportunity outside the box, unleashing a spectacular strike that left Guinea-Bissau’s goalkeeper Jonas Mendes with no chance. Fofana continued to be a significant threat throughout the first half, nearly doubling his tally but was denied by the crossbar at the 35-minute mark.

Despite occasional counter-attacks from Guinea-Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire remained the dominant force after halftime. Their efforts were rewarded just before the hour mark, when substitute Jean-Philippe Krasso executed an acrobatic finish. The goal came after excellent setup work from Jonathan Bamba, solidifying Cote d’Ivoire’s lead and essentially sealing the match’s outcome.

The Elephants’ next challenge in Group A will be a formidable one against three-time champions Nigeria. However, based on this composed and confident opening performance, Cote d’Ivoire appears well-prepared. They are poised to pursue continental glory on their home turf, especially with key players like Fofana and the in-form striker Sebastien Haller showcasing their talent.

Resilient Syria Holds Uzbekistan to Goalless Draw in AFC Asian Cup

Doha, Jan 13, 2024 – In their AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ Group B match at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Syria managed to hold a dominant Uzbekistan team to a 0-0 draw on Saturday. The result was somewhat of a disappointment for Uzbekistan, who were looking to make a strong start in a group led by Australia after their 2-0 win over India earlier in the day.

The draw demonstrates Syria’s resilience and tactical discipline, particularly in defense, against a side that was expected to take the full three points. Uzbekistan, despite creating several chances, couldn’t find the breakthrough, leaving them with a crucial point to start their campaign.

This result sets an intriguing tone for the rest of the matches in Group B, as teams jostle for position to advance to the next stage of the tournament. Both Uzbekistan and Syria will look to build on this performance in their upcoming fixtures, with Uzbekistan needing to enhance their attacking play and Syria looking to maintain their solid defensive setup.

The Panthers’ lone goal came from Sam Reinhart, who continued his impressive form by scoring for the sixth straight game. Despite the loss, Sergei Bobrovsky made 18 saves for Florida (27-13-2), which hadn’t experienced a defeat since late December.

Florida’s head coach, Paul Maurice, acknowledged the team’s effort during their winning streak but conceded that the Devils earned their victory. The Panthers’ winning streak was the third-longest in their history, reflecting their strong performance this season.

The Devils’ victory was marked by strong defensive play and efficient scoring. Daws, starting his fourth game in seven, showed growing confidence and was pivotal in keeping the Panthers at bay, especially with 16 saves in the third period.

New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff praised Daws for his timely saves, noting the team’s reliance on their goalie to make key stops. The Panthers had opportunities to close the gap, including a late shot by Reinhart that hit the post, but the Devils’ defense held firm.

John Marino’s empty-net goal in the final minutes sealed the win for New Jersey, highlighting their ability to close out games effectively.

This win signifies the Devils’ capacity to compete against top-tier teams and will boost their confidence as they continue their season. The Panthers, despite the end of their streak, remain one of the top teams in the league, with players like Bobrovsky and Reinhart in excellent form.

Tarasenko’s game-winning goal came off a rebound from an Artem Zub shot, capping off a night where he had both a goal and an assist. Tim Stützle contributed significantly with four assists, while Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, and Zub also had standout performances, each with a goal and an assist.

Senators coach Jacques Martin praised the team’s effort and emphasized the need to manage the puck better. Goalie Joonas Korpisalo made 14 saves, ending his personal four-game losing streak and securing his first win since late December.

The Sharks, led by Anthony Duclair and Mario Ferraro, put up a strong fight. Duclair had a goal and an assist, and Ferraro contributed with three assists. Mackenzie Blackwood, in goal for the Sharks, made 36 saves, but it wasn’t enough to stop the surging Senators.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with Claude Giroux and Thomas Chabot scoring for Ottawa, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Kevin Labanc responding for San Jose. The Sharks’ Filip Zadina tied the game late in the third period, setting the stage for Tarasenko’s dramatic game-winner.

San Jose coach David Quinn expressed disappointment in his team’s inability to match Ottawa’s tenacity, especially in the crucial final moments.

The victory was significant for Ottawa, showcasing their resilience and ability to win close games. With this win, the Senators hope to build momentum and climb up the standings. The Sharks, facing challenges this season, will look to regroup and address their defensive issues in upcoming games.

Demko Shines in Canucks’ Fifth Straight Win, Shutting Out Sabres 1-0

Buffalo – Thatcher Demko’s stellar goaltending, culminating in 26 saves, led the Vancouver Canucks to a narrow 1-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Saturday. This win marked the Canucks’ fifth consecutive victory and Demko’s fourth shutout of the season, solidifying his reputation as one of the NHL’s top goalies.

Demko’s performance was highlighted by a crucial save in the final seconds of the third period, ensuring the Canucks maintained their slender lead. His outstanding form also earned him a place in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game via the Fan Vote.

Canucks coach Rick Tocchet praised Demko’s imposing presence in the net, noting his calm and solid play throughout the game. Sam Lafferty scored the game’s only goal, his impactful play contributing to the Canucks’ impressive run of six wins in their last seven games.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 22 saves for the Sabres, who were coming off a strong run of three wins in their previous four games. Despite the loss, Buffalo coach Don Granato recognized the team’s effort, highlighting their competitive play against a strong Canucks side.

The game saw Demko make crucial stops, including a first-period save on Jordan Greenway and a second-period glove save on Casey Mittelstadt during a power play. His performance underlined the Canucks’ defensive strength, crucial in tight games like this.

With this win, the Canucks have demonstrated their ability to secure victories through various styles of play, an important trait as the season progresses. The Sabres, despite the loss, showcased their resilience and competitive spirit, indicating their potential for a strong performance in upcoming games.

Oshie, Dowd Rally Capitals Past Rangers for a 3-2 Win

Washington – The Washington Capitals mounted a remarkable comeback in the third period to clinch a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers at the Capital One Arena on Saturday. Key goals from T.J. Oshie and Nic Dowd, scored just 1:53 apart, were instrumental in reversing the game’s fortunes.

Dowd’s equalizer at 6:36, off a tip from an Evgeny Kuznetsov shot, set the stage for Oshie’s game-winning goal at 8:29, assisted by Dylan Strome. Oshie’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as he has now scored two goals in three games after a slower start to the season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksjMn2cTIL4

Anthony Mantha also contributed with a goal for the Capitals, and goalie Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves. The Capitals, who had been struggling with three losses in their last four games, managed this win without star forward Alex Ovechkin, sidelined due to a lower-body injury.

Adam Fox scored both goals for the Rangers, displaying his scoring prowess with his seventh goal this season and fourth in four games. However, Jonathan Quick’s 18 saves were not enough to secure a win for New York, which has now lost four straight games and five of six in January.

The Rangers initially led 1-0 in the first period, thanks to Fox’s goal. Mantha then tied the game for Washington, but Fox’s second goal in the second period put New York ahead again until the Capitals’ late rally.

Both teams will face each other again in a quick turnaround, playing at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday.

This game highlighted the Capitals’ resilience and ability to capitalize on opportunities, especially in the third period. The Rangers, meanwhile, will look to address their defensive issues and capitalize on their offensive chances in their upcoming rematch against Washington.

Mahomes Leads Chiefs to Commanding Win Over Dolphins in Frigid Conditions

Kansas City, Mo. – In one of the coldest games in NFL history, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs triumphed over the Miami Dolphins with a decisive 26-7 victory on Saturday night. Mahomes, the reigning league MVP, threw for 262 yards and a touchdown, showcasing resilience even after his helmet was shattered from a hit in the second half.

Rashee Rice was a standout receiver for the Chiefs, catching eight passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. Isiah Pacheco contributed significantly with 89 rushing yards and a touchdown, propelling the Chiefs (12-6) to their first postseason win against the Dolphins in four meetings. Kicker Harrison Butker added four field goals to secure the victory for the defending Super Bowl champions.

The Dolphins (11-7), hampered by injuries, couldn’t replicate their regular-season form, which saw them leading the league in yards. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa faced constant pressure from the Chiefs’ second-ranked defense. Tyreek Hill, returning to Kansas City, managed a 53-yard touchdown catch but was otherwise contained.

The game, played in minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit conditions, set a record for the coldest game at Arrowhead Stadium. The intense cold, accompanied by strong wind gusts, presented a challenging environment for players and fans alike. Even pop star Taylor Swift, present to support Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, watched the game from the relative comfort of an enclosed suite.

A notable moment came in the third quarter when Mahomes’ helmet was damaged due to the extreme cold, forcing him to switch to a backup. Despite these conditions, the Chiefs’ offense was efficient, scoring on four of their six first-half drives.

The Dolphins, facing an uphill battle, put together a late drive, but it was too late to change the outcome. Their loss continues a trend of struggles in cold weather, with this being their 11th consecutive defeat in games where the temperature is 40 degrees or less.

The Chiefs now look ahead to their next playoff game, which will be determined by the outcome of the Bills-Steelers match. If the Bills win, the Chiefs will travel to Buffalo; otherwise, they will host Houston at Arrowhead Stadium. The Dolphins, meanwhile, reflect on a season that promised much but ultimately ended in disappointment.

Stroud Leads Texans to Decisive Playoff Win Over Browns

Houston – Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud’s outstanding performance led the Houston Texans to a resounding 45-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns in Saturday’s wild-card matchup. Stroud, demonstrating his growing prowess, threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns, setting a new benchmark as the youngest quarterback to win a playoff game.

Coach DeMeco Ryans lauded Stroud’s impact, recognizing his crucial role in the Texans’ success this season. Stroud, the second overall pick in the last draft, has quickly emerged as a leading figure in the team, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure.

The Texans’ defense complemented Stroud’s offensive exploits, returning two interceptions by Browns’ quarterback Joe Flacco for touchdowns. Steven Nelson and Christian Harris were instrumental in these decisive plays, significantly extending Houston’s lead in the third quarter.

For the Browns, led by the veteran Flacco, it was a day of missed opportunities and costly mistakes. Flacco, who had helped steer the Browns into the playoffs, couldn’t replicate his regular-season form, with his errors proving too much to overcome against a dominant Texans side.

Houston’s victory marks a significant turnaround for the franchise, transforming from a struggling team to AFC South champions under Ryans’ guidance and Stroud’s leadership. This win also signifies their first playoff appearance since 2019.

Despite making their third playoff appearance since their 1999 expansion rebirth, the Browns faced their worst postseason loss since 1968. The absence of key players like Deshaun Watson, who had led the Texans in their last playoff run, was felt, with Watson watching from the sidelines.

Apart from showcasing Stroud’s talent, the game also highlighted Houston’s effective team strategy and the enthusiastic support of their home crowd. The Texans continue their remarkable season with this victory, looking ahead to their next playoff challenge.

Hawkins’ Career Night Leads Pelicans Past Mavericks

Dallas, Jan 13, 2024 – Rookie Jordan Hawkins delivered a spectacular performance with a season-high 34 points, guiding the New Orleans Pelicans to a 118-108 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. The Pelicans, who were without several of their regular starters, saw contributions from seven players scoring in double figures.

Herb Jones added 15 points for the Pelicans, and Jonas Valanciunas contributed 14 points along with a game-high 12 rebounds. This win allowed the Pelicans to bounce back after their previous night’s loss to Denver.

The Mavericks, led by Kyrie Irving’s 33 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr., both adding 24 points, were also missing key players. Luka Doncic was sidelined due to an ankle sprain, marking his second consecutive game missed this season. Additionally, Dante Exum and rookie Dereck Lively II were absent due to injuries.

Despite a slow start from the 3-point line, the Pelicans found their rhythm in the third quarter, hitting 7 of 9 from beyond the arc and outscoring the Mavericks 39-27 to take the lead.

The Pelicans were playing without Zion Williamson, who was rested, Brandon Ingram, suffering from an Achilles issue, and CJ McCollum with an ankle problem. This absence of key players meant the Pelicans were missing a significant portion of their season’s scoring output.

The game started with the Pelicans establishing an early lead, despite Irving and Hardaway’s struggles in shooting, particularly from the three-point line. The Mavericks managed a comeback in the second quarter, thanks to Hardaway and Jones, but the Pelicans’ strong third quarter was pivotal in securing their win.

The teams will have a quick turnaround as they are set to meet again in Dallas on Monday, providing another opportunity for both sides to adjust and respond.

Vucevic Leads Bulls to Victory Over Spurs Despite Jones’ Career High

San Antonio, Jan 13, 2024 – The Chicago Bulls, led by Nikola Vucevic’s strong double-double performance, rallied to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 122-116 on Saturday. Vucevic’s 24 points and 16 rebounds were pivotal in overcoming a standout game from San Antonio’s Tre Jones, who scored a career-high 30 points.

The Bulls’ victory was also bolstered by Ayo Dosunmu’s 21 points and DeMar DeRozan’s 20 points. Keldon Johnson put up a strong fight for the Spurs with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough to extend their two-game winning streak.

The Spurs were without their No. 1 pick, Victor Wembanyama, who sat out the second game of a back-to-back as a precautionary measure due to a sprained ankle he sustained in late December. Coach Gregg Popovich indicated that Wembanyama, who the team has cautiously managed, will be re-evaluated in two weeks and won’t play both games of their upcoming back-to-back set.

In Wembanyama’s absence, Tre Jones stepped up significantly, particularly with his 3-point shooting. Jones, who had struggled from beyond the arc earlier in the season, went 4 for 6 on 3s in this game, all in the first half.

The Spurs showed resilience with a 12-0 run in the third quarter, capped by a Blake Wesley dunk that brought them close to the Bulls’ lead. Johnson’s three-pointers in the quarter’s final minute tied the game at 94.

However, the Bulls had set the tone early, closing the first quarter with a significant lead. The Spurs’ struggle when trailing by double digits continued, as they dropped to 2-26 this season under such circumstances.

This game marked a rare third regular-season meeting between the Bulls of the Eastern Conference and the Spurs of the Western Conference, necessitated by the inaugural In-Season Tournament.

Looking ahead, the Bulls will travel to Houston for their next game, while the Spurs are set to face Cleveland on Sunday, continuing their respective campaigns in a challenging NBA season.

Randle and Knicks Overpower Injury-Plagued Grizzlies

Memphis, Tenn., Jan 13, 2024 – Julius Randle’s double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds guided the New York Knicks to a 106-94 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night. The win, marked by impressive performances from OG Anunoby and a career-high from Miles McBride, reflects the Knicks’ strong form, having won six of their last seven games.

The Grizzlies, severely impacted by injuries, struggled against the Knicks’ dominant play. GG Jackson led Memphis with 20 points and six rebounds, with Vince Williams Jr. adding 17 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Luke Kennard and David Roddy contributed 14 points each.

A critical advantage for the Knicks was their control of the boards, outrebounding Memphis 56-35. Isaiah Hartenstein played a significant role, matching his career-high with 20 rebounds. The Knicks particularly excelled in the third quarter, where they ramped up their defensive pressure, resulting in a 24-8 rally and outscoring the Grizzlies 30-15.

Memphis is currently grappling with a slew of injuries, including the loss of their leading scorer Ja Morant to season-ending shoulder surgery and Marcus Smart’s injury, which will sideline him for at least six weeks. Desmond Bane, another key player, was also absent due to a recent ankle sprain.

The Grizzlies were without eight players against the Knicks, including their top five scorers, with Jaren Jackson Jr. also sitting out due to a right knee contusion.

The Knicks, despite missing their leading scorer Jalen Brunson due to a calf contusion, showcased depth and resilience. Memphis had held a lead at halftime, capitalizing on Knicks’ turnovers, but couldn’t maintain their momentum in the second half.

Looking forward, the Knicks will host Orlando on Monday, aiming to continue their winning streak, while the Grizzlies face a challenging encounter against Golden State.

Antetokounmpo’s 33 Points Lead Bucks to Victory Over Warriors

Milwaukee, Jan 13, 2024 – The Milwaukee Bucks, powered by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 33 points, triumphed over a depleted Golden State Warriors squad with a 129-118 victory on Saturday night. The Bucks’ strong fourth-quarter performance was key to their win, as they outscored the Warriors 46-37 in the final period.

The Warriors, playing without Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, struggled to keep pace. Curry was rested following a back-to-back road game, and Green is expected to return from suspension in the Warriors’ upcoming games against Memphis or Utah.

Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard and Khris Middleton also made significant contributions. Lillard scored 27 points, while Middleton added 24, including a crucial 13 in the fourth quarter, and dished out 10 assists. The Bucks were remarkably efficient in the final quarter, shooting 70% from the field.

Jonathan Kuminga led the Warriors with 28 points, and rookie point guard Brandin Podziemski impressed with 23 points and 10 assists. Klay Thompson also added 21 points for Golden State.

Bucks rookie guard Andre Jackson Jr. marked a career milestone by recording his first professional double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. A highlight of the game was Jackson’s block on Warriors center Trayce Jackson-Davis, which led to a key 3-pointer by Lillard.

The game saw back-and-forth action, but key plays in the final minutes, including a rebound basket by Brook Lopez and an alley-oop from Middleton to Antetokounmpo, secured the Bucks’ victory.

The first quarter was dominated by the Bucks, with a strong 3-point shooting performance. However, the Warriors bounced back in the second quarter, briefly taking the lead before halftime.

Stephen Curry’s absence was felt by the Warriors, with coach Steve Kerr noting Curry’s fatigue after heavy reliance in recent games. Draymond Green, who missed 12 games following a suspension, is working his way back to game fitness.

Looking ahead, the Warriors will face Memphis on Monday, while the Bucks host Sacramento on Sunday, continuing their respective campaigns in a tightly contested NBA season.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s 37 Points Propel Thunder to Victory Over Magic

Oklahoma City, Jan 13, 2024 – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive 37-point performance led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 112-100 win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday night, tying them with Minnesota for the Western Conference lead. Gilgeous-Alexander achieved his high-scoring feat without a single 3-pointer, focusing instead on his efficiency inside the arc and at the free-throw line.

The Thunder’s victory was aided by Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, who scored 16 and 15 points respectively, bringing their season record to an impressive 27-11. Holmgren’s performance was particularly noteworthy in the first regular-season matchup between the top two picks of the 2022 draft, with Holmgren, the second overall pick, going head-to-head with last season’s Rookie of the Year and No. 1 pick, Paolo Banchero.

Banchero led the Magic with 20 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. However, Orlando’s lineup was significantly weakened due to injuries, missing key players like Franz Wagner, Wendell Carter Jr., Markelle Fultz, Gary Harris, and Joe Ingles.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s dominant first half, where he scored 22 points, was instrumental in giving the Thunder a 49-40 lead at the break. His performance included a notable moment where he stole the ball and then scored from an awkward angle while drawing a foul.

Jalen Williams also provided a highlight with a long-range shot just inside halfcourt at the end of the third quarter, extending Oklahoma City’s lead to 86-73. The Thunder maintained a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the game, never allowing the Magic to close the gap to less than six points.

Looking ahead, the Magic will face the New York Knicks on Monday night, while the Thunder are set to take on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kuzma Leads Wizards to Convincing Win Over Hawks

Atlanta, Jan 14, 2024 – The Washington Wizards, led by Kyle Kuzma’s 29 points, snapped a six-game losing streak and claimed a resounding 127-99 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. This win, their largest of the season, also improved their road record to 4-18.

Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. praised the team’s performance, highlighting their energy and creativity on both ends of the court. The Wizards’ defense was particularly effective, holding the Hawks to a season-low 34% shooting from the field and ending Atlanta’s streak of scoring at least 100 points in 94 consecutive games, the third-longest in NBA history.

Trae Young, the Hawks’ leading scorer, managed 21 points but struggled with his shooting, making only 6 of 19 attempts. The Hawks, who had previously dominated the Wizards in their season matchups and had a six-game winning streak against them, were visibly off their game, trailing by 28 points at the end of the third quarter. Their home record now stands at a disappointing 6-11.

Deni Avdija contributed significantly to the Wizards’ success with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists, while also playing a key role in defending Young. Jordan Poole added 20 points, bolstering the Wizards’ offensive efforts.

Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, playing through a strained hamstring, scored 11 points, ending his streak of six consecutive games with 20 or more points. His performance comes amid trade speculation as the NBA’s Feb. 8 trade deadline approaches.

On a cold night in Atlanta, the Hawks’ shooting was equally cold. The Wizards, despite ranking last in the NBA in points allowed per game, stifled the Hawks’ offense, which is usually among the league’s best. The first half was particularly challenging for the Hawks, who shot only 31% from the field and 28% from behind the 3-point line.

The Wizards capitalized on the Hawks’ struggles, extending their lead in the third quarter with a decisive 24-11 run. Coach Unseld emphasized the importance of maintaining aggression and not allowing the Hawks any chance of a comeback.

Both teams look ahead to their next games, with the Wizards hosting the Pistons and the Hawks set to play the Spurs on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tatum’s Ejection in Celtics’ Dominant Win Over Rockets Overshadows Udoka’s Return

Boston, Jan 14, 2024 – Jayson Tatum’s ejection following back-to-back technical fouls became a focal point in the Boston Celtics’ commanding 145-113 victory over the Houston Rockets on Saturday. Despite the incident, the Celtics continued their exceptional home form, improving to an unprecedented 19-0 start at the TD Garden this season.

Tatum, who had already tallied 27 points and eight rebounds, was ejected in the fourth quarter during a moment of frustration. His first technical came after voicing displeasure over a missed foul call during an attempted dunk. The situation escalated as he continued to protest, leading to his second technical and eventual ejection.

Coach Joe Mazzulla expressed understanding of Tatum’s stance, emphasizing the importance of self-defense in the league. Tatum himself acknowledged the situation’s timing, stating the need to stand up for oneself, especially when the game’s outcome is nearly decided.

Jaylen Brown led the scoring for the Celtics with 32 points, contributing to the team’s staggering 26-game regular-season home winning streak dating back to last March. The Celtics’ response was a stark contrast to their 33-point loss to Milwaukee in the previous game, showcasing their resilience and dominance on home turf.

The Rockets, led by Cam Whitmore with 22 points and Alperen Sengun’s double-double, showed early promise but couldn’t sustain their performance. They now stand at a 19-19 record, reflecting a struggle to find consistent form.

The game also marked former Celtics coach Ime Udoka’s return to Boston since his suspension and subsequent firing due to inappropriate workplace behavior. Udoka, now coaching the Rockets, received a mixed reaction from the crowd. Jaylen Brown acknowledged Udoka’s influence, wishing him luck in his future endeavors.

The Celtics will look to continue their impressive run as they travel to Toronto, while the Rockets hope to bounce back in their upcoming game against Philadelphia.

Squash: El Hammamy Beats Gohar in 99-Minute Epic at SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open

Hania El Hammamy and Nouran Gohar produced another classic on semi-finals day at the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open, with El Hammamy emerging victorious after 99 minutes of breathtaking action.

Almost seven months on from their record-breaking encounter at the CIB World Tour Finals – the longest PSA Tour women’s match ever – the Egyptian pair put on another show, this time with a spot in the Florida Open final on the line.

They split the opening two games before Gohar took command of game three, quickly moving to 5-0 up and then closing it out 11-5 following a video review.

Back came El Hammamy once more, though, with a new ball in play to start game four, and she ensured the match would go to a decider after winning the game on a stroke.

It looked as though that might’ve taken the wind out of Gohar’s sails, too, as El Hammamy was quickly 5-1 up in the fifth, with victory in her sights.

But this time it was Gohar who fought back, eventually forcing a tie break after some more brutal rallies.

El Hammamy had already squandered one match ball at 10-9 up when the tie break began, and missed another two at 11-10 and 12-11, with the tension inside the arena now palpable.

Gohar would then have a match ball of her own, saved by El Hammamy on a short backhand volley, but the drama would finally come to an end moments later.

After bringing up another match ball on a stroke decision, El Hammamy clinched victory in sensational fashion, diving for a forehand and then hitting a backhand from her knee, before Gohar hit the tin to bring an end to the match.

“It’s always physical against Nouran, it’s always long,” El Hammamy said after her win.

“I just heard it was 99 minutes, so yeah, it’s always tough. I think today was more about squash, so I’m definitely glad about my performance, I’m glad that I managed to fight.”

Discussing what she was thinking during the fifth-game tie break, El Hammamy added: “I knew how I was losing my match points, I made a lot of errors.

“I had two match balls that I think I lost with an error, so maybe on the third or fourth, I tried to play safe. Even if I wanted to go short, I tried to play safe, not hit a winner, and I think with that dive I saved myself from one of those winners that Nouran likes to play. I dug deep in that last rally and I’m very pleased and very proud of myself.”

El Hammamy also touched on the help of Laura Massaro, who she’s been working with remotely.

“We called twice this morning,” she said. “She tried to prepare me mentally as much as possible for this match.

“This matchup is not always about squash. For the last three meetings, it was more than squash, it was more about interactions with the ref, interactions between both of us, so she prepared me mentally for these scenarios, she prepared me well to know how to deal with them, so thanks to her, and thanks to my coach Omar AbdelAziz as well.”

That match capped a breathtaking semi-finals day in which two other matches also went the distance.

Mostafa Asal came back from 2-1 down to beat his idol, Mohamed Elshorbagy, 3-2, after Mazen Hesham had upset top seed and home favourite Diego Elias in the first match of the day.

Playing at his home club, Elias came into the match with an impressive record against the Egyptian, winning 12 of their last 15 meetings, including each of the last nine, but he was unable to add another win to that record, going down in 77 minutes on the glass court.

“I’m very, very pleased,” Hesham said after his win. “I haven’t beaten Diego in God knows how long.”

“It’s been a few years and he’s been at the top of the rankings for around the last two years. He’s improved so much, mentally and physically, and he’s such a nice guy outside of the court as well.

“Inside the court, I think both of us were a bit feisty but that happens with this sport. We respect each other so much, and I was really pleased with how both of us fought and kept our composure at the end, and I was really lucky that it went my way. Other times, it wouldn’t go my way, but it did today.”

Nour ElSherbini was the only player to record a straight-games win, beating Olivia Weaver 3-0 in the other women’s semi-final.

The finals of the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open take place from 15:00 (GMT-5) tomorrow, January 14. Watch the action live on SQUASHTV.

Pascal Wehrlein and Porsche Top the Podium – Round 1 – 2024 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix

MEXICO CITY, Mexico. Sat. 13 Jan. 2024 – Pascal Wehrlein of TAG Heuer Porsche displayed masterful driving to clinch the first win of the season in an electrifying start to Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Mexico City today.

Wehrlein further solidified his renowned prowess at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez by leading from the start and converting his now-fourth Julius Baer Pole Position in Mexico to a second race win in the country. Although briefly ceding the lead during an ATTACK MODE charge under Full Course Yellow conditions, the German-Mauritian driver showcased his skill and resilience before a well-timed overtake to take back his lead and cross the finish line first. Wehrlein’s win also solidifies the success of the Porsche powertrain as the third Porsche-powered winner in each of the last three Mexico City E-Prix events. Joining Wehrlein on the podium were Sébastien Buemi for Envision Racing in second and Nick Cassidy, Jaguar TCS Racing’s new signing, in third.

The race also saw strong performances from Maximilian Guenther (Maserati MSG Racing) and Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing), with the latter engaging in a fierce, defensive battle with Jean-Éric Vergne (DS PENSKE), who made an impressive climb from 10th to sixth. Jake Hughes (NEOM McLaren Formula E Team), Stoffel Vandoorne (DS PENSKE), championship-defender Jake Dennis and Norman Nato (both Andretti Formula E) also put in notable performances, navigating through the pack to round out the top ten and secure points.

A relatively clean race was only interrupted on lap 9, after Robin Frijns found the wall on the exit of the Foro Sol. A Full Course Yellow would be required for the car’s removal, forcing Wehrlein to delay his attack on the then-leader Buemi.

Pascal Wehrlein, No. 94, TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, said:

“It was a tough race because we were leading most of the race and that’s not so efficient for energy – but every lap was like a qualifying lap, trying to maximise speed. I saw a small mistake behind me which created a small gap, and from then I think it was pretty controlled. Thanks a lot to my team and thanks to all the fans here, it’s always a great to be here in Mexico; it’s a great atmosphere. I’m already looking forward to coming back next year.”

Sébastien Buemi, No. 16, Envision Racing Formula E Team, said:

“I’ve had four podiums here now. They’re now calling me the veteran. It was a smooth race. Qualifying was the key point really. I know it’s quite difficult to pass here, but we’ve had a clean race. Pascal was fast, but I heard he was under investigation, so I decided to stick to P2, and if it becomes something more, then I’ll be happy with that.”

Nick Cassidy, No. 37, Jaguar TCS Racing, said:

“It’s the start of a really nice new chapter. I had high expectations with FP1 and FP2, it’s not been an easy weekend, but the team have been really awesome with me throughout. Hopefully this is the start of something cool and that’s just getting started; it was a great race. I think the grid can definitely challenge Pascal moving forward.”

Palmer’s Penalty Clinches Narrow Victory for Chelsea Over Fulham

London, Jan 14, 2024 – Chelsea secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge, marking their third consecutive Premier League win for the first time in 15 months, with Cole Palmer emerging as the match-winner. The 21-year-old’s first-half stoppage-time penalty was the difference, lifting Chelsea to eighth in the table, edging above Manchester United on goal difference.

Palmer, who has been pivotal for Chelsea this season, notched his ninth goal, equalling Christian Pulisic’s record for most strikes in a Premier League campaign by a player aged 21 or younger, set in the 2019/20 season.

The match began with Chelsea controlling possession, though their early efforts, including attempts by Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja, didn’t seriously test Fulham’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The visitors, despite their less dominant position, managed to create a significant chance when Antonee Robinson set up Harry Wilson, whose effort was saved by Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic.

The game’s crucial moment came in first-half stoppage time. Palmer, demonstrating his growing influence, played a key role in winning the penalty. His pass found Raheem Sterling, who was fouled in the box by Fulham’s Issa Diop, setting up Palmer to coolly convert from the spot.

The second half mirrored the first, with Chelsea unable to extend their lead despite maintaining control. Fulham showed flashes of threat, particularly in moments from Robinson and Raul Jimenez, but Chelsea’s Petrovic was up to the task.

Chelsea nearly secured a more comfortable margin late in the game, as Gallagher’s striking effort hit the post. The match concluded with a tense finale, including a frantic sequence following a free-kick from former Chelsea player Willian. Fulham’s late efforts, however, were in vain, as Chelsea held on to secure the victory.

The defeat extends Fulham’s unfortunate record at Stamford Bridge, where they remain winless in 19 league visits since 1979. The Cottagers, now 13th in the standings with 24 points, continue their struggle in away matches, extending their winless streak to 10 games.

Chelsea’s victory, however, is a sign of resurgence under their current setup, potentially setting the stage for a stronger second half of the season.

FC Dallas Re-Signs Goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer for 2024 Season

January 13, 2024

FC Dallas has re-signed veteran goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer for the 2024 MLS season, as announced by the club. Along with his role on the field, Maurer will also take on responsibilities in the club’s front office as a Player Development Executive.

Jimmy Maurer, 35, has been with FC Dallas since joining on a one-week loan in 2017. Over the years, he has made 71 appearances for the club, including 14 clean sheets. Maurer’s experience and leadership have been invaluable, particularly in the 2021 season, where he played 24 MLS regular season matches and recorded three clean sheets.

In 2023, Maurer featured for FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and played in five MLS regular season matches. His most notable performance came in 2020 during the MLS Cup Playoffs, where he recorded seven saves in his debut against the Portland Timbers and helped advance the team to the Western Conference Semifinals.

The Player Professional Development role is a new initiative allowing MLS clubs to designate one player per year in this position. It enables the player to develop skills in different parts of the club’s business, including coaching, scouting, front office duties, and diversity liaison. Maurer’s dual role reflects his extensive experience and the trust FC Dallas places in his capabilities both on and off the field.

FC Dallas is preparing for the upcoming 2024 MLS regular season, which will kick off on February 24 when they host the San Jose Earthquakes. Maurer’s re-signing and his new role in player development indicate the club’s commitment to leveraging his skills and experience in various capacities.

Maurer’s continuation with FC Dallas promises to be an asset, providing stability and expertise as the club embarks on the new season.
