Heat Edge Magic in Low-Scoring Affair

MIAMI – In an NBA rarity, the Miami Heat secured a win without reaching the 100-point mark, defeating the Orlando Magic 99-96 on Friday night. This feat, uncommon in today’s high-scoring league, marked the first such victory since the Houston Rockets beat San Antonio on December 11.

Duncan Robinson led the Heat with 23 points, while Bam Adebayo delivered the crucial go-ahead jumper with just 18.5 seconds left. Adebayo’s performance was key, contributing 21 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Jaime Jaquez Jr. also played a significant role, adding 19 points for Miami.

For Orlando, Paolo Banchero finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists but missed three crucial attempts in the game’s final moments. Moe Wagner scored 19 points, with Chuma Okeke and Joe Ingles contributing 16 and 14 points, respectively. However, Orlando’s struggles at the free-throw line, going 12 for 20, played a part in their defeat.

The game’s low-scoring nature was an anomaly in the current season, with NBA teams having a 7-107 record when scoring under 100 points. Both teams had contrasting records in sub-100-point games prior to this matchup.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and Magic coach Jamahl Mosley reflected on the nature of the game, with Spoelstra acknowledging the fan enjoyment of such a contest and Mosley emphasizing the learning experience for his young team.

The Heat were without several key players, including Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, and Tyler Herro due to injuries. Orlando also faced absences, with Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. sidelined, and Jalen Suggs limited due to illness.

This win sees Miami continue its dominance against Southeast Division opponents, maintaining an unbeaten record in division games. The Heat look forward to their next game against Charlotte on Sunday, which will include a ceremony for Dwyane Wade’s Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement.

The Magic, facing a challenging road trip, will next visit Oklahoma City on Saturday, aiming to bounce back from this close loss. The game highlighted the Heat’s resilience and ability to secure wins despite scoring challenges and key player absences.

Warriors Rally Past Bulls with Strong Second Half

CHICAGO – The Golden State Warriors, led by Klay Thompson’s 30 points and Stephen Curry’s crucial 27 points, overcame a slow start to secure a 140-131 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday night. Curry’s 15 points in the fourth quarter were pivotal in the Warriors’ impressive second-half performance.

Despite early struggles, with Thompson and Curry initially missing 10 of their first 11 shots, the Warriors made a significant turnaround after halftime. Thompson’s five 3-pointers and 17 points in the third quarter shifted the momentum in Golden State’s favor, leading to a 16-point advantage entering the final period.

Curry, who finished 8 of 24 from the field, contributed nine assists, emphasizing the collective effort behind the Warriors’ victory. Andrew Wiggins added 17 points and eight assists, and Jonathan Kuminga provided a spark off the bench with 24 points.

This win was particularly important for the Warriors, who had lost their last two home games and are facing an upcoming road trip. Thompson highlighted the importance of maintaining a positive team spirit.

The Bulls, led by DeMar DeRozan’s 39 points, shot an impressive 58.1% from the field but couldn’t maintain their lead. Zach LaVine contributed 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, marking the Bulls’ first loss since his return from injury. Coby White’s 25 points, including 21 in the first half, were not enough to stave off the Warriors’ comeback.

Golden State effectively managed turnovers, winning the battle 12-3 against a Bulls team that typically protects the ball well. The Bulls’ halftime lead, fueled by White’s performance, was ultimately overcome by the Warriors’ offensive surge.

The game was marked by a halftime ceremony honoring the Bulls’ 1995-96 championship team and other franchise luminaries. However, the celebration was dampened by fans booing former general manager Jerry Krause, affecting his widow, Thelma.

The Warriors played without several key players due to injuries, including Moses Moody, Chris Paul, Gary Payton II, and Draymond Green. Thompson expressed eagerness for Green’s return, emphasizing his defensive impact.

Looking ahead, the Warriors continue their road trip against Milwaukee on Saturday night, while the Bulls face the Spurs in San Antonio. Golden State’s comeback win highlights their resilience and ability to adjust mid-game, while the Bulls will look to rebound from this high-scoring affair.

Paul George’s Stellar Performance Leads Clippers to Victory Over Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Paul George’s exceptional performance, scoring a season-high 37 points, propelled the Los Angeles Clippers to a 128-119 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. George’s efficiency, connecting on 12 of 18 shots and hitting 7 of 10 from 3-point range, was crucial in his sixth game this season scoring at least 30 points.

Kawhi Leonard, fresh off signing a three-year contract extension, added 22 points, shooting 10 of 16 from the field. Clippers coach Tyronn Lue praised George’s rhythm and expressed a desire for him to take even more shots, given his current form.

Amir Coffey also contributed significantly with 13 points, perfect from the field, as the Clippers shot an impressive 55% overall. Despite the win, Leonard noted areas for improvement and the need for more consistent play.

Memphis was led by Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 21 points, while Xavier Tillman matched his career high with 20 points and nine rebounds. David Roddy added 17 points for the Grizzlies. However, Desmond Bane, scoring 15 points, left the game in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle, adding to Memphis’ injury concerns.

Coach Taylor Jenkins of the Grizzlies, already dealing with multiple injuries, acknowledged the challenging situation but remained optimistic about the team’s future prospects. The severity of Bane’s injury was not immediately clear.

Memphis’ injury woes were compounded by the absence of leading scorer Ja Morant, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, and backup point guard Marcus Smart, out for six weeks with a finger injury.

The Clippers capitalized on the Grizzlies’ depleted lineup, particularly in the second quarter, where they outscored Memphis 42-27. Their shooting performance in the period was exceptional, contributing to a 65-53 lead at halftime.

Lue attributed the victory to the team’s ability to win in different ways, highlighting George’s scoring and James Harden’s playmaking with 11 points and nine assists.

The Clippers, now fourth in the Western Conference, have won eight of their last nine games. The Grizzlies, facing a tough injury situation, continue to navigate a challenging season.

Looking ahead, the Clippers will face Minnesota on Sunday, while the Grizzlies host the New York Knicks on Saturday. The Clippers’ recent form and depth have been key to their success, while the Grizzlies will aim to overcome their injury struggles and maintain competitiveness in the league.

Gobert and Towns Power Timberwolves Past Trail Blazers

MINNEAPOLIS – Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns led the Minnesota Timberwolves to a commanding 116-93 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night. Gobert, returning from a game missed due to left hip soreness, notched 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Towns contributed 23 points, shooting a perfect 3 of 3 from beyond the arc.

The Timberwolves took full advantage of an undermanned and fatigued Portland team, which was reeling from a historic 139-77 defeat to Oklahoma City the previous night. The duo of Gobert and Towns was particularly effective, combining for a remarkable 16 of 19 shooting from the field.

Gobert emphasized the unique dynamic between him and Towns, focusing on their shared goal of winning and setting aside individual egos. The Timberwolves shot an impressive 55% as a team and limited the Trail Blazers to just 39% shooting.

Minnesota also welcomed back Mike Conley, who had nine points and 10 assists after resting a game. Anthony Edwards added nine points for the Timberwolves, who improved their strong home record to 14-3 this season. The efficiency of Gobert, Edwards, and Conley allowed them to rest during the fourth quarter.

Karl-Anthony Towns spoke about maintaining professionalism and upholding the team’s standards, regardless of the opponent’s form. Duop Reath led the scoring for Portland with 14 points, while Jerami Grant added 13 points. The Trail Blazers ended a challenging seven-game road trip, losing six of the seven games.

Portland coach Chauncey Billups acknowledged the difficulty of the road trip, exacerbated by injuries. The Trail Blazers were without DeAndre Ayton, missing his tenth game with right knee tendinitis, and Shaedon Sharpe due to adductor soreness. Malcolm Brogdon returned off the bench but couldn’t offset the team’s struggles, and leading scorer Anfernee Simons had a tough night with just five points.

The victory was crucial for Minnesota, regaining the top spot in the Western Conference amid recent offensive struggles and a high turnover rate. Despite committing 16 turnovers against Portland, the Timberwolves’ overall performance was too strong for the Trail Blazers to challenge.

Minnesota’s fast start, leading by 22 in the first quarter, set the tone for the game. The Trail Blazers briefly narrowed the gap in the second quarter, but the Timberwolves extended their lead to 36 in the fourth.

Portland’s road woes were evident throughout their trip, with six losses by at least 21 points. Their only win came in an overtime game against Brooklyn.

Looking ahead, the Trail Blazers will face Phoenix at home on Sunday, while the Timberwolves host the Los Angeles Clippers. The Timberwolves’ win highlights their potential when firing on all cylinders, particularly with the impactful performances of Gobert and Towns.

Wembanyama’s Stellar Performance Leads Spurs to Victory Over Hornets

SAN ANTONIO – Victor Wembanyama’s remarkable night with 26 points and 11 rebounds propelled the San Antonio Spurs to a dominant 135-99 win against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday. His efficiency from the field, including 2 of 3 from the 3-point line, and his defensive presence with two blocks in just 20 minutes, were pivotal in the Spurs’ convincing victory.

The game also marked the return of Hornets star LaMelo Ball after a 20-game absence due to an ankle injury. Despite Ball’s impressive stats of 28 points, five assists, and five steals, it wasn’t enough to counter the Spurs’ overall team performance.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich praised his team’s growing understanding and chemistry, which was evident in their 31 assists and consecutive wins for only the second time this season. The Spurs’ starters were able to rest in the final quarter, indicating their control over the game.

Wembanyama, however, will not be playing against the Bulls in the Spurs’ next game as the team continues to manage his minutes following a sprained ankle in late December. His cautious approach to recovery reflects the team’s long-term vision for his contribution.

The Hornets, still missing key players like Gordon Hayward, P.J. Washington, and Mark Williams due to injuries, struggled to find their footing against the Spurs’ offense. Ball’s return also drew attention to his “LF” tattoo, which he played without covering for the first time since the rule prohibiting commercial logos on players’ bodies.

For the Spurs, Doug McDermott, Jeremy Sochan, and Devin Vassell made significant contributions to the team’s scoring. Popovich noted the solid performances on both ends of the floor.

The game was expected to be a showdown between top draft picks Wembanyama and Brandon Miller, but an injury to Miller early in the second quarter dampened the anticipation. Wembanyama responded to criticism about not getting the ball enough, emphasizing his unconventional playing style and the team’s adjustment to it.

The Spurs’ victory highlighted their potential when firing on all cylinders, while the Hornets continue to navigate challenges with their roster. The Hornets will next face Miami on Sunday night, and the Spurs host Chicago on Saturday night.

Harris’ Career Night Leads 76ers Past Kings Without Embiid

PHILADELPHIA – Tobias Harris led the Philadelphia 76ers to a 112-93 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night, scoring a season-high 37 points. His explosive first period set the tone for the 76ers, who snapped their three-game losing streak without key players, including Joel Embiid.

Harris’ performance was his best scoring output in six seasons with Philadelphia, marking his highest total since a career-high game with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2018. In the absence of reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, who missed his third consecutive game due to left knee soreness, and other rotation forwards, the 76ers found strength in depth.

Nicolas Batum stepped up with 14 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Paul Reed and Mo Bamba filled in effectively at the center position, contributing eight and 11 points, respectively, with Bamba also recording four blocks.

De’Aaron Fox led the way for the Kings with 21 points, while Malik Monk and Keegan Murray each added 15 points. The Kings struggled to find their rhythm, particularly in the first quarter, shooting under 40%.

The decisive moment for the 76ers came in the second quarter with a 29-12 run, highlighted by Batum’s eight points in a minute, including back-to-back 3-pointers. This surge gave Philadelphia a 22-point lead, a margin the Kings couldn’t overcome.

Sacramento missed Kevin Heurter due to a right ankle sprain, impacting their performance. The Kings will look to bounce back when they visit the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday night, while the 76ers will host the Houston Rockets on Monday afternoon.

This victory for the 76ers demonstrates their ability to rally and produce a strong team performance, even in the absence of key players like Embiid. Harris’ standout game underscores his importance to the team, especially when stepping up in critical moments.

Pacers Overpower Hawks with Team Effort, Despite Haliburton’s Absence

ATLANTA – The Indiana Pacers showcased their depth and offensive prowess, defeating the Atlanta Hawks 126-108 on Friday night. This victory marked Indiana’s third consecutive win over Atlanta this season, including their earlier high-scoring matchups.

Despite the absence of star player Tyrese Haliburton, who leads the NBA in assists, the Pacers demonstrated balanced scoring and impressive teamwork. Haliburton missed the game due to a strained left hamstring, but his teammates stepped up to fill the void.

Buddy Hield and Obi Toppin led the Pacers with 18 points each, while Bennedict Mathurin contributed 15 points. Indiana’s collective effort was evident, with eight players scoring in double figures. The Pacers also excelled in shooting, hitting a season-high 67.1% from the field, and dominated in rebounds.

T.J. McConnell’s season-high 14 assists were a significant part of Indiana’s 41 total assists, reflecting the team’s effective ball movement and offensive strategy. Andrew Nembhard, who scored 10 points and added seven assists, emphasized the team’s identity of having multiple players contribute to the scoring.

The Pacers’ ability to score in the paint was a key factor in their win, as they outscored the Hawks 76-48 in that area. Atlanta coach Quin Snyder acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, particularly in guarding the basket.

Dejounte Murray led the Hawks with 29 points, amidst NBA trade deadline rumors. Saddiq Bey and Jalen Johnson added 17 and 16 points, respectively. However, the Hawks’ star Trae Young, who is second in the All-Star voting among Eastern Conference guards, had a tough night with only 13 points on 4 of 17 shooting.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle praised his team’s collective spirit and understanding, noting the positive vibe among the group. He also recognized the defensive effort against Young, acknowledging the challenge of containing such a talented player.

In a unique occurrence, Young and Bogdan Bogdanovic both reached their 1,000th career 3-pointer in the same game, a first for NBA teammates.

After a closely contested first half, the Pacers pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 31-19 to create a significant lead.

The Pacers look forward to facing Denver on Sunday, while the Hawks will host Washington on Saturday night. The victory for Indiana highlights their resilience and depth, proving they can win big games even without key players like Haliburton.

Rockets Edge Out Pistons, VanVleet’s Second-Half Surge Key to Victory

DETROIT – Fred VanVleet’s standout performance in the second half, including crucial points in the fourth quarter, led the Houston Rockets to a narrow 112-110 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night. This loss extended Detroit’s losing streak to seven games, emphasizing their ongoing struggles this season.

The Pistons, now with a record of 1-35 after a promising 2-1 start, are facing a challenging period marked by an NBA-record matching 28-game losing streak. The streak began with a loss to the Rockets on New Year’s Day.

Jaden Ivey’s missed opportunity for a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds was a heartbreaker for Detroit. Rockets coach Ime Udoka acknowledged the stroke of luck in their win.

Alec Burks and Kevin Knox II led the Pistons’ scoring with 19 points each. The team felt the absence of their leading scorers, Cunningham and Bogdanovic, due to injuries. Pistons coach Monty Williams reflected on the tough loss, underlining the harsh realities of competitive sports.

For Houston, Alperen Sengun scored 29 points, and Jalen Green added 28, playing pivotal roles in the team’s success. VanVleet, who finished with 20 points and 12 assists, was instrumental in the Rockets’ comeback, particularly with his performance in the closing minutes.

Isaiah Stewart, returning to the Pistons’ lineup after a break, contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. Despite his efforts, Detroit struggled to contain Houston in the crucial moments of the game.

The Pistons had taken the lead with Burks’ 3-pointer, but the Rockets, behind VanVleet’s stellar play, regained control. VanVleet’s key baskets and assists, especially in setting up Sengun’s dunk, shifted the momentum towards Houston.

Stewart’s late 3-pointer brought the Pistons close, but VanVleet’s miss in the final seconds maintained the narrow margin for Houston’s win. The game was evenly matched in the first half, but Detroit’s strong start in the third quarter wasn’t enough to secure the victory as Houston rallied back.

Injuries impacted the game, with Jeff Green leaving due to a knee collision. The Rockets now look forward to facing Boston, while the Pistons aim to regroup against Washington on Monday.

Lightning Bolt Electrifies in World Record-breaking Formula E Race Car

MEXICO CITY, Mexico. Sat. 13 Jan. 2024 – The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, experienced a breath-taking new level of speed and acceleration behind the wheel of Formula E’s world record-breaking GENBETA race car in Mexico City on Friday.

Ahead of the first race of the season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the multi-Olympic gold medallist drove the revolutionary Formula E GENBETA electric race car on a full lap of the track where the 2024 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix will be held later today (Saturday, 13 January).

The fastest man ever over 100m and 200m could not resist trying out the sprint capabilities of the Formula E GENBETA, which earlier last year smashed the official indoor land speed world record by more than 50 km/h reaching 218.71km/h inside the ExCeL London.

Bolt accelerated from the start line on the track at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit, achieving 0-60mph in 2.89 seconds and powering through 100m in 4.36 seconds – 5.22 seconds faster than his world record 100m time of 9.58 seconds.

With current Formula E World Champion driver, Jake Dennis (Andretti Formula E Team) and former F1 star and new Formula E TV presenter, David Coulthard, on hand to provide coaching advice, Bolt was able to experience the 400kW power of the GENBETA at full effect from the start line and along the straight.

The GENBETA features a range of modifications to effectively ‘unlock’ the specifications of Formula E’s GEN3 race car.

Introduced last season, the GEN3 is the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built. With a top speed of more than 322 km/h (200 mph), the GEN3 is used by the 11 teams and 22 drivers in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Usain Bolt, 100m, 200m and 4x100m world record holder, said:

“The GENBETA race car is like a rocket ship on wheels. Getting the chance to drive it was a mind-blowing experience. The power from the start was such a surprise and the adrenaline you got is on a different level, easily. Driving the GENBETA was like nothing I’ve experienced before. I was told that as soon as you drive, you don’t want to stop or get out and they were right. I would do it every day if I could. If I get more time, I will definitely go faster.”

Jeff Dodds, CEO, Formula E, said:

“Usain Bolt is electric. What could be more Formula E than bringing together two world record holders – Usain Bolt and our GENBETA race car – just to see what happens? Usain broke the world record 15 years ago, and nobody has come close to beating it since. He came to our race event today with that same determination and confidence to step out of his comfort zone, get in our incredible race car, and see what he could do. He’s also asking me if he can come back tomorrow and see if he can go even quicker.”

David Coulthard, former F1 driver and Formula E TV presenter, said:

“I was very impressed with Usain’s focus and desire to put in a strong performance. Put the world’s fastest man in this incredible race car and he was always going to push it to the limit. Once a champion, always a champion.”

ABOUT THE WORLD-RECORD BREAKING FORMULA E GENBETA RACE CAR:

On 25 July 2023, days before the final race weekend in Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the revolutionary Formula E electric race car, the GENBETA, smashed the indoor land speed world record by more than 50 km/h reaching a top speed of 218.71 km/h (135.9 mph) inside a building in London.

  • The official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title was achieved by driver Jake Hughes of NEOM McLaren Formula E Team who competed with Mahindra Racing team driver, Lucas di Grassi, to set the world record for the fastest speed achieved by a vehicle indoors.
  • The pair went head-to-head in the ‘Duels’ format used in qualifying for Formula E races to see who could set the fastest speed indoors on just 346 metres of straight racetrack, using the same GENBETA car.
  • Neither driver had ever been behind the wheel of the GENBETA before, but both beat the previous world record of 165.2km/h (102.65 mph) set in February 2021 on all three of their practice and their official world record attempts.
  • The GENBETA car driven by both drivers to set the new world record featured a range of modifications to effectively ‘unlock’ the specifications of the GEN3 race car.
  • Introduced last season in Formula E, the GEN3 is the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built, with a top speed of more than 322 km/h (200 mph) and used by the 11 teams and 22 drivers in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

The modifications to the GEN3 as part of the GENBETA project include:

  • Enhanced battery power output of 400kW, up from 350kW in the GEN3, through the activation of the front powertrain kit in traction, delivering all-wheel drive for the first time in a Formula E car. The battery was charged by ABB, the title partner and official charging partner of the Championship.
  • New, softer iON Race tyre compound allowing faster warm-up and better peak grip, developed by Hankook Tire, official tyre supplier of Formula E.
  • 3D printed front wing endplates, wheel fins and a wind deflector to optimise aerodynamics for enhanced straight line speed of the GENBETA.
  • In addition to technology innovations on the GENBETA car, Google Cloud provided generative artificial intelligence (AI) for analysis of the drivers’ runs. Using their leading platform, Vertex AI, Hughes and Di Grassi were able to interpret real-time telemetry data to generate speed, power and grip recommendations. This gave them the ability to interact and converse with an interface to help fine tune their approach across their three attempts.
  • Experts from McKinsey & Company, led by its AI arm, QuantumBlack, built data and analytics components to create the driver interface that analysed and queried data in real time through generative AI for the record attempt.
  • An adjudicator from Guinness World Records monitored the attempts to ensure the drivers met strict criteria. To set the official indoor landspeed record, the GENBETA car had to set off from a static start and come to a complete halt inside one continuous building structure.
  • The drivers started from a standstill inside the ExCeL London events arena and navigated a 130-degree turn at around 40 km/h before quickly accelerating along the 346m straight of the racetrack.
  • The indoor straight is part of the 2.09km track which is unique in world motorsport for extending inside and outside the 100,000 sq/m ExCeL London events arena in the Docklands area of east London which hosted the final two races in Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
  • Their speed was measured by a sophisticated speed trap system at a fixed point just five metres before the drivers entered the braking zone – the length of track needed to come to a complete stop and remain inside the building.

Squash: Elshorbagy Celebrates 700th Match with Win at SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open

Mohamed Elshorbagy celebrated his 700th PSA Tour match with a win, beating Gregoire Marche to reach the semi-finals of the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open.

The Englishman became the youngest player to hit that milestone since records began on what was also his 33rd birthday, and made sure it would be a day to remember with a 3-1 win.

After opening up a sizeable lead early in game one, Elshorbagy was pegged back to 6-6 by the Frenchman, but he closed out the game nonetheless when Marche attempted an ambitious back-court boast that found the tin on game ball.

Game two was more straightforward for Elshorbagy, who kept Marche at arm’s length throughout before hitting a crisp, cross-court forehand which found the nick on game ball, but Marche responded well to keep his hopes alive by winning game three.

Looking to regain control, Elshorbagy dominated the opening rallies of game four to give himself a 6-2 lead, but Marche would not go down without a fight.

He hit a brilliant forehand smash into the nick at 7-4 down then closed the gap to a single point after winning a breathless rally in which he had to recover from his knees, but ultimately it would prove to be too little too late, with another tin on match ball handing Elshorbagy victory.

Speaking about his achievement of reaching 700 matches, Elshorbagy revealed his pride, while setting his sights on more milestones in the future.

“I’m really proud,” he said. “I’m not sure how many players get to 700 – I know Greg [Gaultier] and James [Willstrop] were in the 700s – and I’m really, really proud of the achievement of being the youngest ever to do it.

“But hopefully I have a few more years left in me, hopefully I can think about 800, and why not think about the 1,000th match one day, as long as I can keep myself healthy.”

Speaking on the performance today, Elshorbagy added: “I’m really, really pleased. I think I played much better than yesterday, focus-wise, and performance-wise I felt much more comfortable with the court.

“Greg obviously had a tough match yesterday and sometimes than can make you a little bit slow at the start and you get sharper as the match goes on, so after I lost that third game, I had to take the pace up to another level in the fourth, especially at the start.”

Elshorbagy will take on Egypt’s Mostafa Asal in the semi-finals, after the ‘Raging Bull’ dominated Sebastien Bonmalais, dropping only 10 points in a 3-0 win, while Diego Elias and Mazen Hesham will contest the other match.

The women’s semi-finals will also be contested by the top four seeds, after Hania El Hammamy came through an intense quarter-final clash with Amina Orfi in the day’s final match.

The two young Egyptians put on a show for the watching Florida crowd, going toe-to-toe across more than an hour, with El Hammamy eventually running out a 3-1 winner.

“It was a very tough match to be honest,” El Hammamy said after the win.

“Amina is a very good player, she’s still 16 but the maturity and the level she’s playing at is definitely not 16, and I needed to be prepared very well.

“But I’m definitely pleased with that performance. There’s probably a couple of areas in the second game that made me play a fourth, but overall I’m happy with that performance.”

El Hammamy will play the returning Nouran Gohar, who beat Farida Mohamed 3-0, with the winner set to play either Nour ElSherbini or Olivia Weaver.

The semi-finals of the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open take place from 13:00 (GMT-5) tomorrow, January 13. Watch the action live on SQUASHTV.

Late Morris Header Secures Dramatic Draw for Luton at Burnley

Burnley, Jan 14, 2024 – In a pivotal relegation battle at Turf Moor, Carlton Morris’ stoppage-time header salvaged a crucial point for Luton Town as they drew 1-1 with Burnley. The late equalizer not only denied Burnley a vital win but also brought Luton level on points with 17th-place Everton in the Premier League relegation fight.

The match began with high intensity, as Burnley’s Johann Gudmundsson missed an early chance, which was promptly followed by a Luton counter-attack. The game’s first significant save came from Burnley’s James Trafford, who denied Ross Barkley’s long-range effort.

Luton dominated the next phase of the game, applying pressure and pinning Burnley back. However, their inability to capitalize was punished in the 36th minute when Zeki Amdouni struck for Burnley. Wilson Odobert’s assist from the left wing set up Amdouni for a first-time finish that beat Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

Burnley’s Vitinho had opportunities to extend the lead after the break, but Kaminski kept Luton in the game with crucial saves, including a deflected shot from Odobert and a volley from Lyle Foster.

Despite Luton’s struggles to create clear-cut chances in the second half, the game took a dramatic turn in stoppage time. Morris rose to meet Alfie Doughty’s cross, heading home the equalizer. Burnley’s protests over an alleged foul on Trafford were dismissed following a VAR review, allowing the goal to stand.

This dramatic equalizer highlights Luton’s resilience, marking their tenth late goal in the final 10 minutes of Premier League games this season, a record surpassed only by Liverpool.

The result leaves Luton still in the relegation zone but tied on points with Everton, just above them. Burnley, sitting in 19th place with 12 points, now find themselves four points adrift of safety. The draw represents a missed opportunity for Burnley to create distance from their relegation rivals and adds intensity to the battle at the bottom of the table.

Broadway Joe’s Bold Guarantee Echoes Through NFL Lore

January 12, 1969, Miami Orange Bowl: Namath Delivers on Super Bowl Promise

In a historic moment that still resonates with the reverence of legend, Joe Namath’s guarantee of victory before Super Bowl III remains one of the most iconic events in NFL history. On January 12, 1969, the New York Jets quarterback, already known as “Broadway Joe” for his confidence and charisma, assured a Jets’ win against the Baltimore Colts at the Miami Orange Bowl — a promise he fulfilled against all odds.

The Jets, representing the AFL, were underdogs facing the NFL’s Colts, who had dominated the league with their formidable defense. Namath’s guarantee wasn’t just a boast; it was a defining moment for the AFL-NFL rivalry, symbolizing the competitive spirit that would eventually lead to the full merger of the two leagues.

Namath’s remarkable assurance came at a banquet three days before the championship game. When he stated unequivocally, “We’re gonna win the game. I guarantee it,” it was more than bravado; it was a pivotal moment that captured the imagination of fans and players alike.

On the field, Namath’s performance was a testament to his leadership and skill. He meticulously orchestrated the Jets’ offense, making crucial plays and avoiding turnovers. His strategy and composure under pressure were instrumental in the Jets’ 16-7 victory over the Colts. Namath’s pre-game confidence was mirrored in his gameplay, as he completed key passes and navigated the Jets through the Colts’ defense.

Reflecting on the game, Namath highlighted the methodical preparation and the tactical advantages they believed they had. The Jets had studied the Colts meticulously, understanding their strategies and anticipating their moves. Namath’s knowledge of the Colts’ defense was so thorough that it was likened to having the answers before a test.

As we commemorate this historic event, it is not only the victory that is remembered but the spirit with which it was achieved. Namath’s guarantee and the subsequent victory of the Jets marked a new era for the AFL and the NFL, one where confidence could be as strategic as the plays on the field.

Today, nearly six decades later, the story of Broadway Joe’s guarantee remains an enduring part of NFL folklore, reminding us that sometimes, the audacity of conviction is the most powerful play in the game.

Atlanta United Signs Defender Derrick Williams Through 2025 Season

January 12, 2024

Atlanta United FC has officially signed center back Derrick Williams through the 2025 MLS season, with an option for 2026. This move comes after the club selected the rights to Williams in the 2023 MLS Re-Entry Draft last month.

Derrick Williams, aged 30, brings a wealth of experience to Atlanta United. He began his professional career in the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2012, before moving to Bristol City in League One the following year. Williams played a pivotal role in helping Bristol City earn promotion to the Championship during the 2014-15 season.

In 2016, he joined Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, where he made 152 total appearances. His extensive career in England includes more than 250 combined appearances in League One and the EFL Championship.

Williams entered MLS in 2021, initially signing with LA Galaxy. In two seasons with Galaxy, he made 44 starts in 47 appearances. In the 2023 season, Williams joined D.C. United, making 21 starts in 24 appearances and scoring his first MLS goal against FC Cincinnati.

Internationally, Williams has represented Ireland’s national team. He made his senior debut in 2018 in a friendly against France and scored a goal in a friendly against New Zealand in November 2019. He holds dual citizenship in Ireland and the United States, which means he will not occupy an International Roster spot at Atlanta United.

Atlanta United’s Vice President and Technical Director, Carlos Bocanegra, praised Williams for his tough, no-nonsense defending style, and his extensive experience in England and MLS. Bocanegra emphasized Williams’ understanding of the league and physicality, which will provide additional options in the club’s back line.

Williams joins Atlanta United as they prepare for their 2024 campaign, starting on February 24 against the defending MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew. With the addition of Williams, Atlanta United strengthens their defense as they navigate multiple competitions this season.

January 12, 2024

The Toronto Blue Jays have officially unveiled their coaching staff for the 2024 Major League season, featuring several new appointments and returning staff under the leadership of Manager John Schneider.

Key Coaching Staff Appointments

  • John Schneider: Continues as the Manager.
  • Don Mattingly: Appointed as Bench Coach and Offensive Coordinator.
  • DeMarlo Hale: Will serve as Associate Manager.
  • Pete Walker: Retains his role as Pitching Coach.
  • Guillermo Martinez: Continues as Hitting Coach.
  • Mark Budzinski: Appointed as First Base Coach.
  • Carlos Febles: Joins as the new Third Base Coach.
  • Jeff Ware and David Howell: Assistant Pitching Coaches, focusing on the bullpen and strategy, respectively.
  • Hunter Mense and Matt Hague: Assistant Hitting Coaches, with Hague newly promoted from his role as a Minor League hitting coach.
  • Gil Kim: Will serve as Field Coordinator.
  • John Lannan: Appointed as Major League Mental Performance Coach, a role he previously held at Single-A and Triple-A levels.

Overview of the New Appointments

Matt Hague, joining as an Assistant Hitting Coach, has been with the Blue Jays organization since 2020, serving in various coaching roles across the Minor League levels. His promotion to the Major League level follows the Blue Jays’ suboptimal offensive performance last season, and the front office has high regard for his contributions.

Carlos Febles, the new Third Base Coach, replaces Luis Rivera, who retired at the end of last year. John Lannan, the Major League Mental Performance Coach, has a history with the Blue Jays, having worked in a similar capacity in the lower levels of the organization.

Focus on Improving Offensive Strategy

The Blue Jays’ front office, particularly General Manager Ross Atkins, has emphasized the need to improve the team’s offensive strategy and process. The appointment of Hague and the continuation of Martinez and Mattingly in their roles are seen as steps toward reimagining and enhancing the team’s offensive capabilities.

Conclusion

The 2024 coaching staff of the Toronto Blue Jays marks a blend of continuity and new insights. The appointments and promotions reflect the organization’s strategic approach to improving team performance, particularly in the offensive department, and maintaining a competitive edge in the upcoming Major League season.

Imperious Puneri Paltan blow past Gujarat Giants 37-17 in PKL Season 10

13th January, Jaipur: Puneri Paltan put the Gujarat Giants to the sword registering a 37-17 victory at the SMS Indoor Stadium on Friday. Brilliant performances by Aslam Inamdar (10 points,) Gaurav Khatri (6 points) Mohamadreza Chiyaneh (5 points) sealed a dominant win for the table toppers.

MATCH CENTRE

Paltan got off to an electric start and raced into a five point lead, almost immediately. Key to that lead though was in how their brilliant defence kept the Giants quiet, to a degree where they only managed their first point once five minutes had ticked by. The Paltan defence was imperious in the first half, logging an incredible 8 tackle points.

The Giants kept trying to close in on the form team of the season but to no avail. One SUPER TACKLE by Sonu warded off the inevitable but with three minutes of the half left, the Paltan inflicted an ALL OUT to take a 16-7 lead. They extended that even further, going into the break leading by an incredible 11 points.

Pune continued their dominance into the second half and within the first four minutes of the restart inflicted a second ALL OUT to take a 28-10 lead. By this time the Giants were more concerned about saving face than the game itself.

A misfiring Giants offence couldn’t do much to slow the rampage though. The Giants pulled off a series of SUPER TACKLES at the tail end of the game to avoid the ignominy of another all out, but the result remained in no doubt as the Paltan took a massive victory.

NFL Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On and Off Field Throughout Wild Card Weekend

NEW YORK — Jan 12, 2024 — Today the NFL unveiled three new ways that the league will deepens its commitment to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy throughout the entirety of Wild Card Weekend and beyond.

To kick off the weekend, the league announced a five-year commitment to Realizing the Dream (RTD), a platform created by Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King and Yolanda Renee King that aims to unite more than 7 million young people, 200,000 educators, and millions of employees around the globe through a series of service initiatives focused on the tenets of social change and community impact. Over the next five years, the NFL and additional corporations will work with the King Family and Legacy+ to help fulfill Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for an equitable and united America.

“The NFL’s partnership with Realizing the Dream aligns with our dedication to serving communities, the values that underpin our Inspire Change efforts and our desire to further Dr. King’s legacy,” said Anna Isaacson, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility. “As we build upon an existing movement, we’re excited to answer Realizing the Dream’s call to action through facilitating and celebrating acts of service and social change around the country.”

“Arndrea, Yolanda, and I are excited to join hands with the NFL in commemorating my father’s vision of a beloved community. The Realizing the Dream initiative underscores the importance of service, collective responsibility, and how service empowers individuals and strengthens communities,” said Martin Luther King III. “The NFL’s commitment to social justice resonates with the principles my father held dear. Together, we amplify the message of justice and equity for all.”

The league also has an ongoing partnership with The King Center, led by CEO, Dr. Bernice A. King. As part of their work together, the league is working with the King Center and EVERFI from Blackbaud to introduce the Students with King curriculum to schools nationwide. Students with King is The King Center’s flagship engagement platform for elementary, middle, and high school students. Offering a series of dynamic and inspirational programming, this initiative aims to empower teachers to bring the King Legacy into the classrooms while providing student-centered programming that supports literacy development, character-building, and social-emotional learning objectives. Through their core learning programs, students are introduced to the philosophy of Kingian nonviolence and gain important lessons about how to apply nonviolence in their immediate environments.

“We thank the NFL for its continuing support of The King Center as we call for a shift in the cultural climate through the study and practice of Kingian nonviolence,” said Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center. “That cultural shift starts with each of us individually adopting nonviolence as a way of life to create a more just, humane, equitable and peaceful world.”

Expanded Wild Card Weekend game integration will include Be Love helmet phrase decals to be worn by all players during all six games, circular MLK decals to be worn by all players during all six games and Be Love end zone stencils for one end zone while the other will continue to read It Takes All Of Us. The King Family has also provided two PSAs to NFL teams in the playoffs for integration into their in-stadium game programming and amplification on media platforms. The first video features Yolanda Renee King, the only grandchild of Dr. King, and the second video features Martin Luther King III.

Italian Amedeo Bagnis with skeleton World Cup victory for the history books Olympic Champion Grotheer

St. Moritz (RWH) The BMW IBSF World Cup in St. Moritz (SUI) has come to an end with a  skeleton victory for the sporting history books. Amedeo Bagnis was the first athlete from  Italy to win a World Cup race in the men’s skeleton. At the World Championships or  Olympics, Italy has only ever won skeleton gold once: in 1948, Nino Bibbia became  Olympic Champion on the neighbouring Cresta Run, with the Winter Games also taking  place in St. Moritz at the time.

On the Olympia Bobrun St. Moritz Celerina, World Championships silver medallist Amedeo  Bagnis won the fourth World Cup of the winter with a 0.52 second lead over Olympic  Champion Christopher Grotheer from Germany. Third place went to World Championships  bronze medallist Seunggi Jung (KOR, 0.89 seconds back).

World Champion Matt Weston from Great Britain narrowly missed out on the podium at the  BWM IBSF World Cup, finishing fourth ahead of push world champion Yin Zheng from  China. Mattia Gaspari completed the Italian team’s excellent result in St. Moritz in sixth  place with his best World Cup result to date.

The best Swiss athlete at the BMW IBSF World Cup in St. Moritz was Vinzenz Buff. The  bronze medallist at the 2024 IBSF Junior World Championships achieved his best World  Cup result to date in 18th place on his home track.

Seunggi Jung (KOR, 827 points) continues to lead the overall standings in the BMW IBSF  World Cup after four of the season’s eight races, ahead of Christopher Grotheer (GER,  819) and Matt Weston (GBR, 771).

Jaipur Pink Panthers ride on Arjun Deshwal’s Super 10 to beat Telugu Titans and extend unbeaten run to 7 games

12th January, JAIPUR: Jaipur Pink Panthers began their home leg in style with a tightly-contested 38-35 win against Telugu Titans in the Pro Kabaddi League match at the SMS Indoor Stadium in Jaipur on Friday. Arjun Deshwal grabbed his 4th Super 10 in as many games as he finished with 14 raid points, while Telugu Titans captain Pawan Sehrawat bagged 12 points.

Arjun, this season’s top raider, needed no time to settle in as he struck from his very first raid. He was ably supported by Ankush and Reza Mirbagheri in defence as the home team raced to a 9-5 lead. A moment of brilliance from Arjun, where he got past the duo of Hamid Nader and Nitin – inflicted the first ALL OUT on Telugu Titans and they trailed 6-14 in the 13th minute.

Jaipur Pink Panthers needed just 5 minutes to inflict a second ALL OUT. That phase of play belonged completely to Arjun as he completed his Super 10, while Ankush produced a ferocious dash to push Pawan Sehrawat off the mat. Pawan was kept off the mat for over 7 minutes as Jaipur Pink Panthers led 27-8 at the interval.

Telugu Titans showed a lot more character in the second half as the defence stepped up. Led by Sandeep Dhull, they produced a series of sharp tackles to reduce the number of pink jerseys on the mat and Pawan completed the clean-up act to grab the ALL OUT. With 10 minutes to go, the scoreline read 33-21.

Pawan switched gears thereon as he picked up points off successive raids before stopping V Ajith with a superb back hold. Jaipur Pink Panthers were down to 2 men at this point and in a spot of bother. Lucky Sharma stepped out of bounds and then Bhavani Rajput was flattened on the mat as Telugu Titans inflicted another ALL OUT. It marked a sensational comeback from them, as they fought their way back from a 19-point deficit to now trail by just 5. Jaipur Pink Panthers held on to a narrow lead at 36-31 with 4 minutes to go.

Their lead was reduced to a mere 3 points, but Jaipur Pink Panthers determinedly held on to ensure they began their home leg on a victorious note and extended their unbeaten run to 7 games.

Kalinga Super Cup: Ten-man Bengaluru go down to Odisha in opener

Bhubaneswar: A ten-man Bengaluru FC began their Super Cup campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Odisha at the Kalinga Stadium, on Friday. A fortuitous Ahmed Jahouh goal (21’) gave Sergio Lobera’s side all points in a Group D clash, the second half of which the Blues played with a man short after Ryan Williams was sent off at the stroke of half-time.

The absence of the national team players owing to the Asian Cup in Qatar, saw Zaragoza hand young goalkeeper Sahil Poonia his Bengaluru debut, while another youngster in Lalremtluanga Fanai, started in the middle of the pitch alongside captain Keziah Veendorp.

The Blues had the first big chance of the game early on, when Amey Ranawade could clear a cross from Naorem Roshan only as far as Sivasakthi Narayanan. The striker hit the ball on the go, only to see Mawia Ralte thwart the attempt.

However, it was Odisha who grabbed the lead against the run of play when Poonia failed to judge the bounce on Ahmed Jahouh’s harmless-looking freekick before watching it bobble in for a lead that shouldn’t have been. Things went from bad to worse for Bengaluru who were reduced to ten men just after the whistle for half-time was blown, with Ryan Williams being shown a red card for a verbal tirade directed at the fourth official.

Despite being pegged back by a goal and short on a man, Bengaluru took complete control of the game, and even came close to an equaliser just shy of the hour mark. Exchanging a smart one-two with Sivasakthi, Javi found himself through on goal, but delayed his shot and allowed Ranawade that extra second he needed to nick the ball off the Spaniard.

The Bengaluru No.10 came close minutes later, with an audacious overhead kick that Ralte managed to palm away for a corner. Zaragoza’s men threw everything at Odisha who, despite looking shaky at the back, managed to keep Bengaluru at bay.

The Blues have four days to regroup before they take on FC Goa who were 2-1 winners over Inter Kashi in Friday’s early kick-off.
