Jets Set Franchise Record with Eighth Straight Win Against Blackhawks

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets achieved a franchise-record eighth consecutive win, extending their point streak to 14 games with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre on Thursday. This significant achievement underlines the team’s resilience and consistent performance in recent games.

Coach Rick Bowness acknowledged the challenging nature of the game, praising the team’s ability to bounce back in the third period and secure the two points. Nikolaj Ehlers scored the decisive go-ahead goal late in the third period, capping off a strong team effort in the final frame.

The Jets (28-9-4) were supported by Adam Lowry’s two assists and Laurent Brossoit’s 20 saves in goal, maintaining their impressive form without a regulation loss since December 12. Despite the record-setting streak, defenseman Josh Morrissey emphasized the focus on the team’s overall performance and structure rather than just the winning streak.

The Blackhawks (12-28-2) faced another tough loss, extending their road losing streak to 15 games. Connor Murphy’s goal initially gave Chicago the lead, but they couldn’t sustain their advantage. Goalie Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in a valiant effort.

Chicago coach Luke Richardson reflected on the team’s tendency to back off when holding a lead, ultimately leading to their downfall in the third period. The Blackhawks’ frustration was evident, with Murphy lamenting the team’s inability to protect their lead in the game’s crucial moments.

Gabriel Vilardi’s equalizing goal for the Jets set the stage for Ehlers’ winner, showcasing Winnipeg’s depth and ability to find scoring from various sources. Mark Scheifele’s injury in the second period is a concern, with further evaluation expected.

In team notes, the Blackhawks haven’t won a road game since early November, highlighting their ongoing struggles. The Jets’ win surpasses their previous seven-game streak from 2017 and places them alongside other teams like the Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, and Seattle Kraken in setting records for consecutive wins this season.

Ehlers’ point streak and Lowry’s contributions over the past few games demonstrate the balanced attack that has been a key factor in the Jets’ success. The team’s resilience and character, especially in tight games, have been significant in their climb up the standings.

Kyrou’s Hat Trick Powers Blues to Victory Over Rangers

ST. LOUIS — Jordan Kyrou’s impressive hat trick led the St. Louis Blues to a 5-2 victory against the New York Rangers at Enterprise Center on Thursday. Kyrou’s performance, complemented by key contributions from teammates, propelled the Blues to their third win in four games.

Kyrou expressed his joy in playing at home and the energy he receives from the fans, evident in his outstanding play. Pavel Buchnevich, with a goal and two assists, and Robert Thomas, with two assists, significantly contributed to the Blues’ offense. Jordan Binnington’s 40 saves were crucial in net for St. Louis (21-18-1), keeping the Rangers at bay.

Blues coach Drew Bannister, while pleased with the win, expressed concerns about the team’s 5-on-5 play, crediting Binnington and the power play for securing the crucial points against a strong Rangers team.

The Rangers (26-12-2), despite goals from Adam Fox and Vincent Trocheck, couldn’t extend their winning streak, marking their first three-game losing streak (0-2-1) of the season. Fox’s early goal set the tone, but the Blues quickly responded. Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin made 15 saves in the loss.

New York’s frustration was evident, with Fox commenting on the team’s inability to capitalize on numerous shooting opportunities. The Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad was a late scratch due to illness, impacting their lineup.

Kyrou’s goals showcased his skill and timing, with his second goal highlighting a smooth tic-tac-toe passing play. Brandon Saad’s power-play goal in the second period further extended the Blues’ lead, and Kyrou completed his hat trick in the third period on a breakaway.

Trocheck’s response for the Rangers cut the lead, but Buchnevich’s empty-net goal sealed the win for St. Louis. Binnington described the game as a clean and enjoyable challenge against a formidable offensive team.

In team notes, Kyrou’s hat trick marks his third in the NHL and his eight points in five games against the Rangers. Panarin of the Rangers continued his impressive streak against St. Louis, although his goal streak ended in this game. Trocheck extends his point streak with his performance.

The Blues’ victory demonstrates their ability to capitalize on power plays and the importance of strong goaltending, while the Rangers will look to rebound from this loss and address their recent challenges.

Barzal’s Overtime Heroics Lift Islanders Over Maple Leafs

ELMONT, N.Y. — Mathew Barzal’s quick overtime goal, just 21 seconds in, secured a dramatic 4-3 win for the New York Islanders against the Toronto Maple Leafs at UBS Arena on Thursday. Barzal, who also contributed three assists, was the night’s standout player, tapping in a crucial pass from Noah Dobson after a face-off win by Bo Horvat.

This victory was a significant turnaround for the Islanders (19-12-10), who had faced two consecutive losses, including a disappointing 5-2 defeat to the Vancouver Canucks. Coach Lane Lambert praised the team’s character and resilience, particularly after trailing 3-1 in the game.

The game began with Kyle Palmieri’s early power-play goal, giving the Islanders a quick lead. Alexander Romanov and Bo Horvat also found the net, with Dobson assisting four times. Goalie Ilya Sorokin’s 32 saves were vital in keeping the Islanders competitive throughout the match.

The Maple Leafs (21-10-8), who had been on a four-game winning streak, saw Auston Matthews scoring twice. However, Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe was critical of the team’s special teams performance, particularly on power plays and penalty kills. Goalie Martin Jones made 26 saves for Toronto.

Matthews’ goals initially gave Toronto a promising lead, but the Islanders’ determined comeback changed the game’s dynamics. Romanov’s goal was particularly noteworthy, finding an opening in the Leafs’ defense and executing a perfect shot.

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams displaying strong offensive and defensive plays. Matthews acknowledged the game’s competitive nature and the Islanders’ effective play on both sides of the puck.

Barzal’s impact was significant, extending his point streak to five games with two goals and seven assists. Dobson’s four assists marked a career-high in the NHL. For Matthews, this game was his 70th multigoal game, inching closer to Darryl Sittler’s record for the most in Maple Leafs history.

This win for the Islanders not only breaks their losing streak but also demonstrates their ability to rally and win against formidable opponents, showcasing their resilience and team spirit.

Kraken Extend Winning Streak with Victory Over Capitals

WASHINGTON — The Seattle Kraken continued their remarkable form, winning their eighth consecutive game and extending their point streak to 12 games with a 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Thursday. This winning streak ties the longest in the Kraken’s three NHL seasons and sets a new team record for their point streak.

Seattle’s goalie Joey Daccord was instrumental in the win, making 25 saves and winning his seventh straight start. He remains undefeated in regulation since December 10, showcasing his consistency and skill in the net.

Adam Larsson, contributing a goal and an assist, played a pivotal role in the Kraken’s success. Daccord, with a 9-0-2 record in his last 11 games, emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent mindset and not getting too focused on results.

The Capitals, who fell to a 2-6-1 record in their past nine games, saw Max Pacioretty scoring his first goal with the team. Goalie Darcy Kuemper made 19 saves in the effort. Despite the loss, Washington coach Spencer Carbery recognized the team’s need to stick with their game plan and acknowledged the few breakdowns that led to Seattle’s scoring chances.

One of the game’s highlights was Daccord’s scorpion save in the first period, denying Connor McMichael in a critical moment. Tye Kartye and Alex Wennberg also scored for Seattle, with Kartye highlighting the importance of contributions from the entire team.

Pacioretty’s goal marked his return to scoring in the NHL since January 2023. He has been recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, which limited his play last season and this season.

Justin Schultz extended Seattle’s lead with a goal in the second period, and Larsson’s third-period goal solidified the Kraken’s dominance in the game. Carbery expressed disappointment with the Capitals’ lack of intensity and pushback in the third period.

In team notes, Capitals forward T.J. Oshie returned after missing 11 games with an upper-body injury, while All-Star forward Tom Wilson was out with a broken nose. The Kraken joined the Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets as the fourth team with an active winning streak of at least eight games, marking a first in NHL history.

Seattle’s continued success, particularly on the road against a team like Washington, underscores their growing confidence and cohesion as a team.

Lightning Clinch Overtime Win Against Devils

TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Lightning secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Amalie Arena on Thursday, with Darren Raddysh scoring the winning goal in overtime. Raddysh’s well-placed snap shot from the right circle showcased his skill and helped the Lightning continue their recent success.

Raddysh’s goal, reflecting his ability to capitalize on opportunities, underlined the importance of this win for the Lightning (21-17-5) in their pursuit of better standings. Luke Glendening scored twice, and Brayden Point added another goal, while Nikita Kucherov and Nick Perbix each had two assists. Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves, contributing significantly to the team’s win.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper acknowledged the team’s awareness of their standings and the need for points, praising their newfound ability to clinch tight games. The Lightning have won two in a row and three of their last four games.

For the Devils (21-15-3), Dawson Mercer, Jesper Bratt, and Nathan Bastian scored, with goalie Vitek Vanecek making 16 saves. Despite the loss, Devils coach Lindy Ruff appreciated his team’s performance, particularly in creating opportunities and moving the puck effectively.

The game was competitive from the start, with Mercer giving the Devils an early lead. Glendening’s two goals, including a short-handed one, shifted the momentum in favor of Tampa Bay. Point’s goal further extended their lead, but the Devils fought back with goals from Bratt and Bastian.

The Devils thought they had taken the lead in the third period with a goal from Michael McLeod, but it was overturned after a successful coach’s challenge by the Lightning for offside.

New Jersey’s Bastian, playing his 200th NHL game, highlighted the team’s collective effort and the importance of everyone stepping up. The Devils’ determination and resilience were evident, despite falling short in overtime.

In team notes, Tampa Bay’s Point has achieved at least 20 goals for seven consecutive seasons. Kucherov leads the NHL with 69 points and has matched Victor Hedman for the second-most 40-assist seasons in Lightning history.

The game also saw Tampa Bay defenseman Erik Cernak leave in the first period due to a check from Bastian and did not return. This win for the Lightning demonstrates their capability to secure crucial points as they aim to improve their position in the standings.

Pettersson Leads Canucks to Victory Over Penguins in Overtime

PITTSBURGH — The Vancouver Canucks emerged victorious with a 4-3 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday, thanks to a standout performance by Elias Pettersson. Pettersson’s two goals and two assists, including the game-winner in overtime, were pivotal in the Canucks’ recovery.

Pettersson’s breakaway goal in overtime, assisted by Filip Hronek, marked his seventh goal in a four-game streak, highlighting his significant contribution to the Canucks’ success. Brock Boeser also played a crucial role, scoring twice, while J.T. Miller provided three assists for the Canucks (28-11-3), who now boast four consecutive wins. Goalie Thatcher Demko made 32 saves, helping secure the team’s victory.

Sidney Crosby was a key player for the Penguins (20-15-5), scoring twice, including a late tying goal in the third period. Marcus Pettersson also contributed with a goal and an assist. Tristan Jarry, who replaced Alex Nedeljkovic after the first period, made 19 saves but couldn’t prevent the Canucks’ overtime win.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan switched goalies to inject energy into the team, noting the lack of intensity in the first period. The strategy partially paid off, with the Penguins showing improved performance in the latter stages of the game.

The Canucks had a strong start, with Boeser scoring two quick goals in the first period. Marcus Pettersson and Sidney Crosby’s goals brought the Penguins back into contention, but Elias Pettersson’s deflection gave Vancouver the edge again.

Despite the Penguins’ efforts to rally back, including outshooting the Canucks 14-5 in the third period, it was Vancouver’s night, with Elias Pettersson sealing the win in overtime.

Coach Rick Tocchet of the Canucks praised the team’s resilience and ability to handle pressure, acknowledging areas for improvement. The Penguins’ Marcus Pettersson commended his team’s hard-fought effort in tying the game, highlighting the increased competition in the final periods.

In team milestones, the Canucks have maintained a perfect record when leading after two periods this season. Elias Pettersson’s recent performance ties him with Daniel Alfredsson for the second-longest streak in NHL history for game-winning goals in consecutive games.

Penguins forward Reilly Smith suffered an upper-body injury after a hit from Canucks defenseman Nikita Zadorov and is currently being evaluated. Sidney Crosby’s 573rd career goal ties him with Mike Bossy for the eighth-most goals with a single franchise in NHL history.

Sharks Snap 12-Game Losing Streak with Win Over Canadiens

MONTREAL — The San Jose Sharks finally ended their 12-game losing streak with a hard-fought 3-2 victory against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday. This win brings a sigh of relief to the team that has been struggling to find form in recent games.

Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro expressed his relief and satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging the need for improvement but appreciating the weight lifted by this victory. Goalie Mackenzie Blackwood was pivotal in the win, making 33 saves for his first road win of the season.

San Jose’s victory ends the longest losing streak in the NHL since the Buffalo Sabres’ 14-game slide in the 2014-15 season. Sharks coach David Quinn praised the character and resilience of his players, acknowledging the challenges they have faced and overcome with this significant win.

For the Canadiens (17-18-6), Mike Matheson provided two assists, and Sam Montembeault made 32 saves. However, their effort wasn’t enough to secure a win following their 3-2 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

The game saw Luke Kunin, Fabian Zetterlund, and Nikita Okhotiuk scoring for the Sharks (10-29-3). Kunin capitalized on a Canadiens defensive error to open the scoring, and Zetterlund’s one-timer doubled the lead for San Jose. Okhotiuk’s goal, his first of the season, further extended the Sharks’ advantage.

Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson scored for Montreal, with Anderson’s goal coming late in the third period. Despite a push in the final minutes, including a barrage of shots with Montembeault pulled for an extra attacker, the Canadiens couldn’t find the equalizer.

Coach Quinn reflected on the team’s gradual improvement throughout the game, emphasizing the need to build confidence shift by shift. The win is seen as a significant step in overcoming their recent struggles.

San Jose has enjoyed success in Montreal, winning eight straight games there since a loss in March 2015. Matheson commented on the need for the Canadiens to improve, irrespective of the opponent.

In a historical context, the Sharks have experienced longer losing streaks, including a 17-game streak in the 1992-93 season. For Matheson, the assist on Gallagher’s goal marked his 200th NHL point, a milestone in his career spanning 504 games with Montreal, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Florida Panthers.

Panthers Clinch Dramatic Overtime Win Against Kings

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers continued their remarkable winning streak, securing a ninth consecutive victory with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday. Sam Reinhart’s last-second overtime goal was the highlight of the night, extending the Panthers’ impressive run.

Reinhart, scoring his 30th goal of the season, demonstrated exceptional skill by converting a backhand from the right side in the dying moments of overtime. His goal extended his scoring streak to five games, underlining his critical role in the Panthers’ success.

Matthew Tkachuk played a pivotal role in taking the game to overtime, tipping in a shot from Carter Verhaeghe to equalize with 2:18 left in the third period. Tkachuk’s goal was also his fifth in consecutive games, contributing significantly to the Panthers’ (27-12-2) resilience.

Sam Bennett added to the scoreline, and Sergei Bobrovsky’s 31 saves were crucial in keeping the Panthers competitive. Florida’s focus is now on extending their winning streak to ten games in their next match against the New Jersey Devils.

The Kings (20-10-8), despite a strong showing, succumbed to their seventh straight loss (0-3-4). Goals from Trevor Moore and Drew Doughty weren’t enough to secure a win, with goalie Cam Talbot making 38 saves in a hard-fought contest.

Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan praised the high intensity and physicality of the game, acknowledging the tough loss despite a commendable performance from his team.

The Panthers’ power play in overtime, resulting from a cross-checking penalty against Adrian Kempe, set the stage for Reinhart’s dramatic game-winner. Bobrovsky, preparing for a shootout, was relieved to see Reinhart’s decisive goal.

Florida coach Paul Maurice lauded Reinhart’s skill and hard work, emphasizing his unique talent. The Panthers’ ability to turn the game around in the latter stages reflects their determination and skill.

In team milestones, Reinhart’s overtime goal marked the latest in Florida’s history, surpassing Dave Lowry’s record from 1993. He also became the second-fastest Panther to reach 30 goals in a season, trailing only Pavel Bure’s record from 1999-00.

Tkachuk and Verhaeghe continued their point streaks, contributing significantly to the team’s offense. Bobrovsky’s assist on Reinhart’s goal added to his season tally. Florida’s winning streak is the third-longest in the team’s history, highlighting their current dominance in the league.

The Kings, on the other hand, are looking to reverse their fortunes, with Phillip Danault emphasizing the need to capitalize on opportunities and continue pushing forward. Despite the loss, Los Angeles remains close to turning their near-misses into wins.

Oilers Tie Franchise Record with Ninth Straight Win, Overcoming Red Wings in Overtime

DETROIT — The Edmonton Oilers clinched a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday, tying their franchise record with a ninth consecutive win. Darnell Nurse’s goal in overtime was the decisive moment in this closely contested match.

Nurse scored his sixth goal of the season by seizing a loose puck and firing it past Alex Lyon. This win places the Oilers (22-15-1) alongside their previous nine-game winning streaks, a significant achievement given the franchise’s historic success.

Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch reflected on the team’s accomplishment, considering the Oilers’ illustrious past. Goalie Calvin Pickard made 15 saves, contributing to the team’s victory.

Despite Lyon’s impressive 44 saves, the Red Wings (20-16-5) couldn’t extend their three-game winning streak. Olli Maatta tied the game late in the third period, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for Detroit.

Andrew Copp opened the scoring for Detroit in the third period, ending his 26-game goal drought. However, Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman responded for the Oilers, with McDavid demonstrating his exceptional skill and Hyman notching his 26th goal of the season.

Detroit coach Derek Lalonde highlighted his team’s missed opportunities, noting several shots that hit the post or crossbar. McDavid’s equalizing goal was particularly praised for both his skill and intelligence on the play.

The Oilers’ Evander Kane had a goal disallowed in the final seconds of regulation, leading to the overtime where Nurse sealed the win. Edmonton’s remarkable turnaround this season, going from a 5-12-1 start to their current streak, underscores their resilience and determination.

In player milestones, McDavid tied Glenn Anderson for fourth in Oilers history with his 906th point. McDavid, who turns 27 on Saturday, ranks fourth on the NHL scoring list for players 26 and younger. He and Hyman combined for 13 shots on goal, a testament to their offensive impact.

Leon Draisaitl’s face-off efficiency (winning 80 percent) and Lyon’s solid performance since his return from injury also stood out in the game. This victory for the Oilers marks a significant moment in their season, demonstrating their ability to maintain consistency and perform under pressure.

Hurricanes Continue Point Streak with Victory Over Ducks

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes extended their impressive point streak to seven games following a decisive 6-3 win against the Anaheim Ducks at PNC Arena on Thursday. Seth Jarvis led the way with a goal and two assists, showcasing the Hurricanes’ depth and resilience.

The Hurricanes (23-13-5), currently 6-0-1 in their streak, saw contributions from Stefan Noesen and Jordan Martinook, each with a goal and an assist. Their goaltender, Pyotr Kochetkov, allowed three goals on 10 shots before leaving in the second period due to an upper-body injury. Antti Raanta provided solid relief, stopping all three shots he faced.

Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour praised the team’s strong start but acknowledged a brief lapse early in the second period. Despite this, the team’s overall performance was solid.

The Ducks (14-26-1), coming off a win but struggling in recent games, couldn’t match the Hurricanes’ intensity. Their coach, Greg Cronin, expressed disappointment with the team’s sluggish start. John Gibson, the Ducks’ goalie, allowed five goals before exiting with an upper-body injury, leaving Lukas Dostal to close out the game.

Carolina’s Brady Skjei opened the scoring in the first period, followed swiftly by Andrei Svechnikov, who doubled the lead. The Hurricanes dominated the first period, outshooting the Ducks 16-1.

The Ducks’ response came early in the second period with goals from Isac Lundestrom, Ryan Strome, and Frank Vatrano, momentarily tying the game. However, Noesen and Jack Drury’s goals, along with Jarvis’ third-period effort, secured the Hurricanes’ victory.

Jarvis highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum, especially after Drury’s critical power-play goal at the end of the second period. The Hurricanes’ power play has been a key factor in their recent success, scoring in eight consecutive games.

Injury updates include further evaluation for Kochetkov on Friday, while there was no immediate update on Gibson. The Ducks also announced significant injuries to forward Trevor Zegras and defenseman Pavel Mintyukov, each sidelined for at least six weeks.

Jordan Martinook celebrated his 600th NHL game, contributing significantly to the team’s victory. The Hurricanes’ continued success on the power play and overall team performance underlines their status as formidable contenders this season.

Sabres Overcome Senators in Spirited Encounter

BUFFALO — The Buffalo Sabres, led by a stellar performance from Tage Thompson, defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-3 at KeyBank Center on Thursday. Thompson’s two-goal effort was pivotal in extending the Senators’ losing streak to five games.

Buffalo coach Don Granato acknowledged Thompson’s determination to improve from their previous 5-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken. Rasmus Dahlin and Dylan Cozens also made significant contributions, with Dahlin assisting twice and Cozens scoring a goal and an assist. Goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 25 saves, helping the Sabres (18-20-4) secure their fourth win in six games.

Forward Peyton Krebs emphasized the team’s focus and resilience, particularly in the third period, where they managed to maintain their lead despite conceding a couple of goals.

The Senators, struggling to find form, saw Claude Giroux scoring twice. They faced a setback when goalie Anton Forsberg left the game with a right groin injury, replaced by Joonas Korpisalo.

JJ Peterka gave the Sabres an early lead, breaking his 12-game drought with a goal at 9:14 of the first period. Vladimir Tarasenko tied the game for the Senators, but Thompson’s end-to-end play and a power-play wrist shot put Buffalo ahead.

Krebs extended Buffalo’s lead in the second period, while Giroux’s efforts in the third brought the Senators close but not enough to overturn the deficit. Cozens sealed the win with an empty-net goal, concluding the game at 5-3.

Ottawa coach Jacques Martin acknowledged the team’s strong third period but emphasized the need for consistent performance throughout the game. Despite the loss, Martin saw positives in the team’s resilience and ability to create scoring opportunities.

In player milestones, Tarasenko’s goal marked his 600th NHL point. Thompson, who briefly left the game in the third period, is expected to be okay, according to Granato. Dahlin is nearing a record for multiassist games by a Sabres defenseman.

The Sabres played without forward Jeff Skinner, sidelined with an upper-body injury. This win for Buffalo signifies their growing confidence and ability to compete against challenging opponents.

Irving and Hardaway Lead Mavericks to Narrow Victory Over Knicks

DALLAS – The Dallas Mavericks, led by Kyrie Irving’s season-high 44 points and Tim Hardaway Jr.’s 32 points, edged out the New York Knicks 128-124 on Thursday night. Despite playing without Luka Doncic and two other starters, the Mavericks successfully held off a late Knicks rally.

Irving, who scored 20 points in the third quarter, helped Dallas build a comfortable 115-96 lead. However, the Knicks, fueled by Donte DiVincenzo’s 3-pointer, closed the gap to 121-120 with just over a minute remaining. Josh Green’s crucial 3-pointer and subsequent free throws from Irving and Hardaway ensured the Mavericks’ victory.

Dallas native Julius Randle led the Knicks with 32 points, while Jalen Brunson, returning to Dallas for the first time since his free agency move, added 30 points. DiVincenzo contributed 19 points, but the Knicks experienced their first loss in six games since acquiring OG Anunoby.

Anunoby, who scored 10 points with a significant contribution in the fourth quarter, couldn’t prevent the Knicks’ loss. Irving and Hardaway’s combined 12 of 23 on 3-pointers were pivotal for the Mavericks, who exceeded their average of 15.1 three-pointers per game.

The Knicks, coming off a strong defensive performance against Portland, struggled early, allowing 44 points in the first quarter and trailing by 20 points at one stage. Randle emphasized the team’s need for better preparation and lamented their inability to secure crucial rebounds.

The Mavericks, missing key players including Doncic, center Dereck Lively II, and guard Dante Exum, showcased their depth and resilience. Anunoby, who had shone in the Knicks’ previous game, struggled to find his rhythm initially.

Brunson’s return was marked by a mixed performance, including a technical foul in the first half. The Mavericks’ win adds another chapter to the teams’ rivalry, recalling their dramatic overtime victory in December 2022 when Doncic delivered a career-high performance.

Looking ahead, the Knicks will face Memphis on Saturday, while the Mavericks are set for back-to-back games against New Orleans, starting Saturday.

Thunder Decimate Trail Blazers in Historic Rout

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Thunder, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 31 points and Josh Giddey’s triple-double, demolished the Portland Trail Blazers 139-77 on Thursday night. This staggering 62-point victory ties the fifth-largest margin in NBA history.

The Thunder eclipsed their previous record for the largest win, a 45-point margin set in the 2012-13 season. This triumph elevates them to tie with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the best record in the Western Conference at 26-11.

Reflecting on the Thunder’s historic loss by 73 points to Memphis in 2021, Gilgeous-Alexander spoke about using that defeat as motivation to avoid such embarrassment again. The win over the Blazers marks a significant turnaround for the team.

Portland, enduring their second-worst loss in history, struggled throughout the game. Coach Chauncey Billups admitted the night was a complete failure for the Trail Blazers, who shot a dismal 27.7% from the field.

For the Thunder, Jalen Williams contributed 21 points, while Chet Holmgren added 19. Giddey, with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists, achieved his ninth career triple-double. The team’s remarkable 57% shooting accuracy and 41 assists on 53 field goals underscored their dominance.

The Thunder’s start was particularly impressive, given they had returned home at 3 a.m. on Thursday after a win in Miami the previous night. Coach Mark Daigneault praised the team’s readiness and ability to maintain the lead effectively.

Portland’s Anfernee Simons managed 14 points, and Scoot Henderson scored 13, but it was not enough to counter the Thunder’s onslaught. A notable moment was Holmgren’s unconventional basket during a 22-2 Thunder run early in the game.

The Trail Blazers’ frustration became evident as both Shaedon Sharpe and Coach Billups received technical fouls before halftime. The Thunder continued to extend their lead in the second half, going into the fourth quarter with a massive 118-56 advantage.

Looking forward, the Trail Blazers will face Minnesota on Friday, while the Thunder are set to host Orlando on Saturday.

Bucks Crush Celtics in Resounding Victory

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Bucks, motivated by facing the NBA-leading Boston Celtics, snapped out of their recent slump with a resounding 135-102 victory on Thursday. This win, only their second in six games, was marked by an impressive display of urgency and intensity.

Giannis Antetokounmpo emphasized the importance of maintaining this high level of performance against all teams, regardless of their standing. The Bucks showcased a remarkable 25-0 run in the first half, with Bobby Portis and Antetokounmpo scoring 20 consecutive points. Their halftime lead of 75-38 was the franchise’s fourth-largest.

After a disappointing 132-116 loss to the Utah Jazz, where they trailed by 31 at halftime, the Bucks’ response was emphatic. In contrast, the Celtics were playing their second game in as many days, having beaten the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-120 in overtime.

The Bucks focused on increasing their effort and physicality, as highlighted by guard Malik Beasley. This approach paid dividends, with Portis scoring 28 points and Antetokounmpo adding 24, both securing 12 rebounds each. Damian Lillard contributed 21 points, returning to the Bucks’ lineup after missing the previous game.

Bucks coach Adrian Griffin praised the team’s championship-level response. On the other hand, the Celtics, conceding their highest point total of the season, rested their starters for the second half. Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser led the Celtics with 21 and 15 points, respectively, but their struggle from the 3-point line was evident.

The Bucks, shooting an impressive 56.5% overall, dominated the game, sidelining their starters in the fourth quarter. Jrue Holiday, in his first game back in Milwaukee since being traded, scored six points and received a warm ovation from the fans.

Looking ahead, the Celtics will host the Houston Rockets, while the Bucks face the Golden State Warriors, both games scheduled for Saturday.

Mitchell Ignites Cavaliers to Victory in Paris

PARIS – Donovan Mitchell dazzled with a season-high 45 points, propelling the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 111-102 triumph over the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA’s Paris showcase on Thursday. Mitchell, marking his 16th 40-point feat with the Cavaliers, complemented his scoring prowess with 12 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. He now shares a record with LeBron James, being the only Cavaliers to achieve at least 45 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a single game.

Mitchell expressed his eagerness to return to Paris for the Olympics, aiming to add a gold medal to his accolades. The Cavaliers held the lead throughout, thanks to Mitchell’s explosive 21-point performance in the final quarter, including a spree of four 3-pointers.

Cavaliers’ Caris LeVert contributed 21 points, while Jarrett Allen recorded his eighth consecutive double-double. The Cavaliers, now 9-3 since December 16, celebrated their first regular-season game outside North America with this victory.

The Nets, led by Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas with 26 points each, struggled in the first half and have now lost 12 of their last 15 games. Despite spirited efforts from Lonnie Walker IV, the Nets couldn’t overcome the Cavaliers’ dominance.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver anticipates a robust U.S. team for the Paris Olympics and confirmed the NBA’s return to France next season. French NBA presence is notable, with Victor Wembanyama leading the charge and France ranking high in NBA merchandise sales in Europe and the Middle East.

Mitchell’s six-point opening set the tone for the Cavaliers, who led 54-34 at halftime and extended the lead to 26 points early in the third quarter. Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff lauded Mitchell’s readiness and impact on this international stage.

The game also saw Cleveland’s Tristan Thompson ejected for a flagrant foul on Nets’ Nic Claxton. The Cavaliers, missing key players due to injuries, played without starting guard Max Strus for the last three quarters.

Next, the Nets will host Miami on Monday, while the Cavaliers welcome Chicago the same day.

Squash: Gohar Wins in Style on Return to Action at SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open

Nouran Gohar made an emphatic return to action following a lengthy injury layoff, beating fellow Egyptian Zeina Mickawy 3-0 in round two of the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open.

Gohar last played on the PSA World Tour at the QTerminals Qatar Classic in September, but she dominated proceedings here as if she’d never been away, taking just 27 minutes to book her spot in the last eight.

Games one and two were comfortable for the World No.2, but it was her performance in game three that will have put her competitors on notice, with Gohar recording a bagel to complete the victory.

“It feels great,” she said moments after victory.

“Obviously, it takes you a while to get used to the court and the movements, even if you’re training, it’s completely different to a tournament and it has been almost six months, so it’s been quite a long time, but I’m glad to be back for sure.”

Speaking about the process she went through to get back to playing again, Gohar added: “It’s funny, I was literally learning how to walk again, it felt so weird to not be able to walk for a while.

“I was tying my shoes and not able to take two steps in a row and I was in so much pain for so long as well, so to be pain free is an absolute pleasure. And I just think it can get better, that’s the good part, that’s the positive about it, I can see myself improving every single day.”

Discussing the 11-0 scoreline in game three, the Egyptian revealed that she was solely focused on playing good squash.

“I was just trying to find my range again, find my weight of shots and feeling comfortable on court,” she said.

“I was just in the zone, not really thinking about the score to be honest, I was just thinking about where I’m hitting the ball.”

Gohar was joined in the quarter-finals by Hania El Hammamy and Amina Orfi, who both won in the evening session to set up a mouthwatering rematch of their encounter at last season’s PSA World Championships, which El Hammamy won 3-2.

In the men’s draw, French duo Sebastien Bonmalais and Gregoire Marche both knocked out seeded players, beating Miguel Rodriguez and Mohamed ElSherbini respectively.

Speaking after his win, Bonmalais said: “I think it’s the best match I’ve had in my career.

“I’m happy to win, Miguel is very strong and very dangerous. I usually struggle to play him because he’s fast and I don’t like people who are fast like me, but I managed to slow down the pace and focus on my shots being very tight.”

Farida Mohamed, Mohamed Elshorbagy and Mostafa Asal were the other winners on day three.

The quarter-finals of the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open take place from 12:00 (GMT-5) tomorrow, January 12. Watch the action live on SQUASHTV.

World Skate Executive Board resolve to settle remaining National Federation recognition issues

World Skate, the international governing body for Skateboarding and Roller Sports recognized by the IOC, has concluded an Executive Board meeting on January 10, 2024, with statements issued by the Executive Board. These statements finalize the pathway towards the implementation of the policy for a Single Governing Body per Country.

Following the adoption of statutory provisions voted on by the World Skate Congress in 2019, in scenarios where individual countries had multiple governing bodies, World Skate offered the time and space in which the organizations concerned could cooperate in order to resolve this issue while finding solutions particular to the realities and needs of their national scenes. World Skate has never been prescriptive about what that arrangement looked like for the countries involved, allowing all possible solutions including the creation of a representative organisation composed of separate entities with financial and decision-making autonomy.

As the deadline for the establishment of a single governing body per country has passed, the World Skate Executive Board has carefully reviewed the solutions presented by the relevant member organizations involved, and enacted resolutions accordingly.

The Executive Board has been invited to decide upon matters regarding 12 countries out of 136 affiliated to World Skate: Finland, Brazil, Canada, Turkey, Georgia, Latvia, Netherlands, Slovenia , Sweden, Belarus, Russia and USA.

The decisions of the Executive Board are as follows:

In the USA, the joint effort of the existing organizations and the NOC will result in the establishment of Skate USA, within which the various sports will have complete technical, managerial, and financial autonomy; the USOPC will manage skateboarding until the end of the Paris 2024 Olympics. In Sweden this means the creation of Skate Sweden within which the Swedish Skateboard Federation will continue its activities under the auspices of a sole National Governing Body. In Turkey, the Turkish Skateboarding Federation will become Skate Turkey; in Slovenia, the new National Governing body will be Skate Slovenia; in the Netherlands, agreement between all relevant parties will form Skate Netherlands; in Latvia the Latvian Skateboard Federation will become Skate Latvia; in Georgia the Georgian National Skateboard Federation will become Skate Georgia; in Finland, Skate Finland will be created by agreement between the Finnish Skateboarding Association and the Finnish Speed Skating Association; in Canada, National Federation Canada Skateboard will become the sole National Governing Body under a new name as yet to be agreed; in Brazil where no compromise could be found Skate Brasil will be established by CBHP, while the Brazilian Olympic Committee will be in charge of  the technical, sports, and financial management of Skateboarding in all its forms and disciplines including Brazilian athletes’ participation in Olympic qualifying events until the end of the 2024 Paris Olympics. In the case of both Russia and Belarus, the process leading to the establishment of one single Federation in these two countries is currently on hold due to the ban imposed by the IOC on their relevant NOCs.

The individual resolutions can be found by following the link below.

During the meeting, an amendment to a By-Law pertaining to event sanctioning adherence and promotion by National Federations was also passed, more about which can be found here, and which will also be communicated to all our recognised National Federations directly. The criteria for admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to World Skate events was also determined and is accordingly outlined here.

The Executive Board furthermore ratified the update of WSK Technical Rulebooks for Speed, Marathon and Downhill Skateboarding

Real Salt Lake Welcomes Fidel Barajas from Charleston Battery

SALT LAKE CITY, UT., January 11, 2024 — Real Salt Lake has made a significant investment in its future with the acquisition of Mexican youth international winger Fidel Barajas from the USL Championship team, Charleston Battery. The club announced the signing of the 17-year-old, who has committed through the 2026 MLS season with an option for 2027-28.

Real Salt Lake obtained the top spot in the MLS waiver order from Toronto FC to secure Barajas’s signature. The deal included an exchange of $50,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM) and the No. 17 overall waiver position.

Barajas, formerly part of the San Jose Earthquakes youth system, has established himself as one of the most promising talents in the country. His technical abilities and adeptness with both feet allow him to be a threat from either flank. Sporting director Kurt Schmid highlighted Barajas’s vision and awareness on the field, which have earned him high regard in youth soccer circles.

During his time with Charleston, Barajas was named the 2023 USL Championship Young Player of the Year. He recorded five goals and 13 assists across 37 games in all competitions, showcasing his impact on the pitch. He also played a crucial role for Mexico at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which followed their triumph at the 2023 Concacaf U-17 Championship. His accolades also include being named to The Guardian’s “Next Generation” list of top rising talents born in 2006.

Barajas expressed excitement about his transition to MLS and joining Real Salt Lake, known for nurturing young talents and offering them significant playing time. He looks forward to following the pathway laid out by the club, which he believes provides the perfect opportunity for his development and potential future moves to Europe.

Head coach Pablo Mastroeni will have additional options on the wing with Barajas joining the ranks alongside Diego Luna and Andrés Gómez. The move comes as Jefferson Savarino reportedly sets to join Brazil’s Botafogo.

Real Salt Lake’s 2024 season is set to kick off on February 21 against Inter Miami CF, with Barajas expected to be an integral part of the squad’s fresh and youthful dynamic. The signing underlines RSL’s continued commitment to integrating promising young players into its first-team setup, aiming to blend homegrown talent with experienced heads to make a strong showing in the league.

Atlanta United Secures Norwegian Defender Stian Gregersen from Bordeaux

ATLANTA, GA., January 11, 2024 — Atlanta United has strengthened its defensive ranks by signing Norwegian international center back Stian Gregersen. The 28-year-old joins from French second-division side Bordeaux, under a contract that extends through the 2027 MLS season, with an option for 2028.

Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra expressed his confidence in Gregersen’s abilities, noting his consistent performances across different leagues and his adeptness in various defensive scenarios. Bocanegra emphasized Gregersen’s game-reading skills, commanding presence, and leadership qualities that are anticipated to bring organization and resilience to Atlanta United’s backline.

Gregersen brings a wealth of experience to the MLS, having tallied eight goals and four assists over 229 career professional appearances. His tenure at Bordeaux, which began in 2021 after a significant period at Molde FK in Norway, has honed his talents at an international level. With eight caps for Norway, including appearances in World Cup qualifiers and friendlies, Gregersen has proven his mettle on the international stage as well.

The Norwegian defender is expected to form a robust defensive partnership with Peru international Luis Abram, following the departure of Miles Robinson, who was a pivotal figure for Atlanta United from 2019 to 2023, and has now joined FC Cincinnati in free agency.

Atlanta United, led by head coach Gonzalo Pineda, is set to commence their 2024 campaign with a challenging match against the defending MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew, on February 24. The acquisition of Stian Gregersen is a clear indication of Atlanta United’s intent to shore up their defense as they seek to make an impactful run in the upcoming MLS season.

Oakland A’s Finalize Contracts with Blackburn and Brown for the 2024 Season

OAKLAND, Calif., January 11, 2024 — The Oakland Athletics have reached one-year contract agreements with two of their arbitration-eligible players, right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn and outfielder Seth Brown, for the 2024 season. This marks a significant step for the A’s, as they have now secured deals with all players eligible for arbitration on their 40-man roster.

Paul Blackburn, who has spent seven seasons with the Athletics, looks to build upon his 2023 performance, which saw him achieve a 4-7 record with a 4.43 ERA and a career-high 104 strikeouts over 21 games, including 20 starts. Despite starting the season on the injured list due to a right middle fingernail avulsion, Blackburn made a strong return in late May. Over the past two seasons, Blackburn has compiled an 11-13 record with a 4.35 ERA, showing a marked improvement from his initial five-season stint with the team.

Seth Brown faced challenges during the 2023 season, with his performance hindered by a stint on the injured list due to a strained left oblique. Yet, he managed to compile a .222 batting average with 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 91 games. His versatility was on display as he started in four different positions, predominantly against right-handed pitchers, where he hit all 14 of his homers. Over his five-season tenure with the Athletics, Brown has a batting average of .227 with 59 home runs and 186 RBI across 406 Major League games.

The agreements with Blackburn and Brown demonstrate the Athletics’ commitment to solidifying their roster with reliable and versatile players as they aim to make a competitive run in the 2024 season. With all arbitration-eligible players now under contract, the team can focus on spring training and the development of their squad for the challenges ahead in the Major League.

Dodgers Bolster Minor League Roster by Acquiring Ferris and Hope

LOS ANGELES, CA., January 11, 2024 — The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced the acquisition of two promising minor league talents, pitcher Jackson Ferris and outfielder Zyhir Hope, from the Chicago Cubs. In return, the Dodgers have traded away right-handed pitcher Yency Almonte and infielder Michael Busch.

Jackson Ferris, a 19-year-old left-hander, has demonstrated significant potential in his 18 appearances for Myrtle Beach last season, securing a 2-3 record with a commendable 3.38 ERA. His impressive performance included 77 strikeouts over 56.0 innings, showing promise of a high-caliber pitcher in development. Ferris, an alumnus of IMG Academy in Florida, also boasts an impeccable junior year record and experience pitching for Team USA in the summer of 2021.

Zyhir Hope, an 18-year-old outfielder, also joins the Dodgers with a solid background. During his stint with the AZL Cubs, he boasted a .286 batting average and demonstrated power with three home runs and nine RBIs in just 11 games. His high school career was stellar, featuring a .538 batting average with nine homers and 38 RBIs.

The Dodgers parted with Yency Almonte, a 29-year-old pitcher who, despite a challenging last season, showed brilliance in 2022 with a 1.02 ERA. Michael Busch, a 26-year-old infielder, leaves after contributing two home runs and seven RBIs in 27 games for the Dodgers last season. Busch had been recognized as Triple-A Player of the Year, ending his season with a .323 batting average, 27 homers, and 90 RBIs for Oklahoma City.

This strategic move signifies the Dodgers’ intention to invest in future stars while balancing their current roster’s depth. With Ferris and Hope’s addition, the Dodgers are poised to enhance their minor league system and secure the franchise’s long-term success.

St. Louis Cardinals Secure One-Year Agreements with Five Players

LOUIS, MO., January 11, 2024 — The St. Louis Cardinals have successfully negotiated one-year contracts with five key players, thereby sidestepping the salary arbitration process for the upcoming 2024 season. These agreements are indicative of the team’s commitment to stability and continuity as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

Outfielder Dylan Carlson is among those who have agreed to terms with the Cardinals. Carlson, known for his defensive prowess and burgeoning offensive capabilities, is expected to be a vital component of the Cardinals’ strategy moving forward.

The pitching staff sees a significant bolstering with relievers Ryan Helsley, John King, and Andrew Kittredge, as well as JoJo Romero, all securing deals. Helsley’s electric arm has been a crucial element of the bullpen, while King, Kittredge, and Romero will aim to solidify the depth and versatility of the pitching rotation.

Details regarding the financial terms of the contracts have not been made public, maintaining a focus on the players’ prospective contributions to the Cardinals’ ambitions rather than the monetary aspects of their agreements.

Infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman, another vital player for the Cardinals, is set to exchange salary arbitration figures with the team. Edman’s versatility on the field and at-bat has made him a valuable asset, and his ongoing negotiations will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.

These strategic moves by the Cardinals are a clear signal of their intentions to build a strong, cohesive team capable of contending for the top spot in the upcoming season.
