Rybakina Conquers Brisbane International with Commanding Victory

Elena Rybakina, the world No. 4 from Kazakhstan, showcased her exceptional skills at the Brisbane International 2024, claiming her sixth career title in a dominant fashion. In the final, Rybakina faced Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning Australian Open champion, delivering a resounding 6-0, 6-3 victory. This win not only marks Rybakina’s third title on a hard court but also her second in Australia, following her success at the Hobart trophy in 2020.

Rybakina’s performance in Brisbane was nothing short of remarkable, as she ended Sabalenka’s impressive 15-match winning streak in Australia. Despite entering the final with a head-to-head record of 2-5 against Sabalenka, Rybakina turned the tables, showcasing her growth and resilience on the court.

This victory at the Brisbane International adds another illustrious chapter to Rybakina’s career, underscoring her status as a formidable force in women’s tennis. Her ability to triumph over a top-tier opponent like Sabalenka not only reflects her skill but also her mental fortitude in high-pressure situations.

Dimitrov Clinches Second Brisbane Title in Emotion-Filled Victory

Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian tennis sensation, has once again left his mark at the Brisbane International, securing his second title at the prestigious event. Dimitrov, known for his tenacity and skill, outplayed world No. 8 Holger Rune in a gripping final at Pat Rafter Arena, culminating in a hard-earned 7-6(5), 6-4 triumph.

The match, which spanned over two hours, showcased Dimitrov’s exceptional form as he executed 33 winners against a mere 14 unforced errors, without losing a single service game. This remarkable performance earned Dimitrov his ninth ATP singles title and marked his first tournament win since November 2017.

Reflecting on his journey, an emotional Dimitrov reminisced about his long-standing connection with the Brisbane tournament, which dates back 11 years. His victory at the Queensland Tennis Centre not only echoes his previous success in 2017 but also aligns him with British tennis star Andy Murray as the only two-time men’s singles champions in the event’s history.

Dimitrov’s path to the title was no cakewalk, with a notable match against Andy Murray in the opening round, a rekindling of their 2013 final face-off. The win against Murray, the only player to take a set off Dimitrov in the tournament, highlights the high caliber of competition he faced and overcame.

Off the back of a strong performance streak, winning 19 of his last 24 matches, including seven against top-20 players, Dimitrov has demonstrated his ability to compete with the best in the sport, undeterred by age or ranking. This latest victory at Brisbane is a testament to his enduring talent and a promising indicator for his future on the tour.

In his post-match reflections, Dimitrov shared his pride in competing against top-ranked, younger players, viewing it as a measure of his current form and potential for growth. His success in Brisbane, he believes, is a result of his dedicated efforts on and off the court in recent months.

As Dimitrov savors this triumphant moment, he remains grounded, acknowledging areas for improvement and the potential for further achievements. His focus now shifts to enjoying the victory, reassessing his game, and preparing for the challenges ahead.

Rublev Triumphs in Hong Kong, Clinching 15th Career Title

In an impressive display of skill and determination, Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev clinched his 15th tour-level title on Sunday at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open. Demonstrating his prowess on hard courts, Rublev overpowered Finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori in a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-4, at the ATP 250 event.

The 26-year-old Rublev, who entered the tournament as the top seed, exhibited remarkable form throughout the competition, culminating in a commanding performance in the final that lasted just 78 minutes. This victory not only marks a stellar start to his season but also brings his record to 3-1 against Ruusuvuori in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series. The win was particularly sweet for Rublev as it avenged his previous loss to Ruusuvuori in Cincinnati last August.

Rublev expressed his elation post-match, noting both his fondness for Hong Kong and the tournament’s atmosphere. “It is a great feeling,” he said, reflecting on his successful week and the joy of beginning his season with a title.

His path to the title wasn’t without its challenges. Rublev had to navigate through tough matches, notably against rising #NextGenATP stars Shang Juncheng and Arthur Fils, both of which went to deciding sets. However, his final performance against Ruusuvuori was a masterclass in precision and control. Rublev executed 13 winners, limited himself to just six unforced errors, and saved the sole break point he faced.

Rublev’s victory in Hong Kong extends his impressive record against players outside the Top 50 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. His last defeat in this bracket came against Ruusuvuori, making this triumph a significant turnaround.

For Ruusuvuori, the 24-year-old Finn who was contesting his second tour-level final, the tournament marked a significant rise in his career. Despite his loss in the final, he climbed 19 spots to No. 50 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, a testament to his growing prowess on the tour.

The Hong Kong Tennis Open, hosting the ATP Tour for the first time since 2002, witnessed a high level of competition, with Rublev emerging as a deserving champion. His victory in Hong Kong not only adds another title to his already impressive resume but also positions him as a formidable contender for the upcoming Australian Open. Rublev concluded, “I think I played a high level in the final. It will give me more confidence for the Australian Open,” signaling his readiness for the challenges ahead in the tennis season.

Germany Stuns Poland to Win United Cup Trophy in Sydney

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – In a dramatic final, Germany clinched the United Cup trophy with a remarkable comeback victory over Poland, concluding in the early hours of Monday morning. The decisive moment came when Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund secured a mixed doubles win against Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek, the world No. 1, at Ken Rosewall Arena.

The match, which ended at 12:45 a.m., saw the German duo triumph with a scoreline of 6-4, 5-7, 10-4. This victory marked Germany’s persistent resilience throughout the tournament, having finished second in Group D and narrowly advancing to the quarter-finals based on the percentage of games won. Remarkably, Siegemund and Zverev won critical mixed doubles matches consecutively on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, culminating in lifting the trophy.

Zverev played a pivotal role in Germany’s success, especially in the championship match against Poland. Despite trailing Hurkacz and facing championship points, he rallied to win his singles match 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-4. This forced the deciding mixed doubles against Poland, where Swiatek had earlier defeated Angelique Kerber.

Zverev, reflecting on the win, praised the Polish team’s performance and expressed his joy at sharing the trophy with his teammates. He specifically commended Swiatek for her impressive play, likening her presence in a team to having a “cheat code in a video game.”

Poland demonstrated resilience, particularly in the second set when Hurkacz was broken while serving but bounced back to break and win the set. However, Germany took an early lead in the match tie-break, and Poland, despite their strong performance throughout the United Cup, could not recover.

Swiatek, despite the loss, remained optimistic about Poland’s progression in the tournament, noting their improvement from the semi-finals last year to the final this year.

The United Cup final was a testament to the high level of competition and the thin margins that often decide the outcomes in tennis. Germany’s triumph underlines the importance of teamwork and resilience in the sport.

Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Australian Open

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA — Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Australian Open. Nadal shared the news on social media, citing a recent muscle injury as the reason for his decision.

Nadal, who recently made his much-anticipated return to tennis in Brisbane, experienced a minor muscle issue during his last match in the tournament. Despite the injury being in a different location from his previous one, it has raised concerns about his ability to compete in the high-intensity, five-set matches typical of Grand Slam events.

In his statement, Nadal said, “Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in 5 sets matches.” He plans to return to Spain for further medical consultation and rest.

Despite this setback, Nadal remains optimistic about his recovery and future performance. He has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in Brisbane, where he achieved victories over Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler before losing to Jordan Thompson.

This withdrawal follows Nadal’s early exit from last year’s Australian Open and a subsequent hiatus from the sport due to injury. His comeback had been eagerly anticipated by fans worldwide.

Nadal’s absence from the Australian Open is a significant loss for the tournament, but he maintains a positive outlook on his recovery and the season ahead. His focus now shifts to getting back to full fitness and returning to the highest level of competition.

Emma Ekoluoma Stars Again as Finland Defeats Germany 6-0 in U18 Women’s World Championship

In a commanding display at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, Finland secured a 6-0 victory over Germany, largely thanks to the exceptional performance of Emma Ekoluoma. The 17-year-old forward from Karpat Oulu scored her second hat-trick in as many games, marking an impressive debut in the tournament.

Ekoluoma’s achievement puts her on the cusp of equalling a record set by Haley Skarupa of the USA in 2012, who scored hat-tricks in her first three games. However, Ekoluoma faces a formidable challenge in her next game against defending champions Canada.

Despite the lopsided score, Germany showed commendable resilience, especially following their 11-0 loss to Canada. Goalie Hannah Loist was a standout performer, making several significant saves to keep the Finnish team at bay for extended periods.

Finland took an early lead with Erika Kannkkunen setting up Senja Siivonen for the opening goal. While Finland dominated possession and shots, Germany’s defense, led by Loist’s efforts, managed to hold off further scoring for much of the game. Loist’s agility was particularly notable in a save against Eerika Siekkinen.

Ekoluoma’s first goal came late in the first period, followed by her completing the hat-trick in the third period, capitalizing on Finland’s power plays. Abigail Byskata also contributed significantly with two goals, one assisted by Ekoluoma.

Finland’s victory sets them up for a crucial matchup against Canada to determine the top spot in Group A. For Germany, the loss means they must win against Czechia to avoid finishing fourth in the group.

Ekoluoma’s standout performance underscores her potential as a rising star in women’s hockey. As the tournament progresses, Finland will look to leverage her scoring prowess, particularly in their upcoming game against Canada. Germany, on the other hand, will aim to bounce back against Czechia, showcasing the competitive spirit they have demonstrated despite their losses.

Angels Sign RHP Zach Plesac to One-Year Contract

ANAHEIM, CA — The Los Angeles Angels have secured right-handed pitcher Zach Plesac on a one-year deal worth $1 million, adding depth to their pitching staff for the upcoming season. As part of the roster management, left-handed pitcher Adam Kolarek has been outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake to maintain the 40-man roster.

Plesac, 28, began his major league career with a strong debut against the Boston Red Sox in May 2019. He quickly established himself, finishing his rookie season with a 3.81 ERA, ranking him second among American League rookies with at least 100 innings pitched. Plesac continued to impress in the shortened 2020 season, posting a 2.28 ERA, the third-best in the American League for pitchers with a minimum of 50 innings.

The Indiana native, drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the 12th round in 2016 from Ball State University, has recorded a 26-27 record and 4.20 ERA with 359 strikeouts in his five seasons with the Guardians. In 2023, he played five games for the major league team and 19 games for Triple-A Columbus, where he showcased his abilities with a complete game victory in May.

The Angels anticipate Plesac’s addition will bolster their rotation, providing both starting and long-relief pitching options. His proven track record in the major leagues offers a promising outlook for the Angels’ pitching corps in the next MLB season.

Haryana Steelers produce defensive masterclass to outsmart Bengal Warriors in PKL Season 10

7th January, MUMBAI: The Haryana Steelers produced a defensive masterclass to beat the Bengal Warriors 41-35 at the DOME by NSCI in Mumbai. Mohit Nandal, Jaideep Dahiya and Mohit combined for 12 tackle points, which proved to be the difference between the sides on the day.

The game truly kicked off with a SUPER RAID by Maninder in the third minute of the game, as the Warriors took a slender early lead. For the better part of the next 15 minutes though, the Steelers kept the Warriors’ lead man quiet, not allowing him a single raid point. At the same time, their own raiders kept picking away the points to take them up on points.

The Warriors defence stepped up in the dying minutes, chipping away at their opponents’ numbers, and soon enough Maninder went in to clean up and inflict the first ALL OUT of the game. The Warriors went into halftime with a 17-13 lead.

It didn’t take the Steelers long to hit back in the second half, a blitz of raiding by Vinay helping them inflict an ALL OUT of their own and take a two points lead. The game was end-to-end, neither side willing to back down, or able to race ahead. The sides were level on points entering the final quarter of the game.

In the final period though the Warriors raiders put the pressure on the Steelers to reduce their numbers. It took a series of SUPER TACKLES for them to not just stave off the ALL OUT but also hold a valuable one-point lead. It made a huge difference, and having just come on as a substitute, Siddharth Desai racked up a SUPER RAID with his first of the evening, to extend that lead.

It set up a brilliant end to the game, where the Steelers battled hard defensively to keep their lead, despite losing numbers, and the Warriors trying to get an all out to put them in control. That never arrived, the Steelers defence holding firm, initiating SUPER TACKLES and keeping their lead. In the final minute, Shivam Patare’s SUPER RAID gave them a seven point lead with three men on the mat. They held out to take the win.

UKK: Odisha Juggernauts rise to top of Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 table with victory over Telugu Yoddhas

Cuttack, January 7, 2024: Defending champions Odisha Juggernauts rose to the top of the table in front of a passionate home crowd, downing Telugu Yoddhas 35-27 in Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday.

Dilip Khandavi, Omkar Sonawane and Avinash Desai all scored six attack points each as Odisha Juggernauts dominated throughout.

Ultimate Kho Kho, promoted by Amit Burman in collaboration with the Kho Kho Federation of India, became the first Indian sports league to secure Series A funding, courtesy the UK-based BNP Group. Monday’s matches featured a number of special guests, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who flipped the coin during the toss, and Indian Super League club Odisha FC’s players Lalliansanga Renthlei, Pungte Lapung, Paogoumang Singson and Niraj Kumar, who were in the stands to cheer on the home team.

Odisha Juggernauts got Turn 1 off to a great start with their first batch of Dilip Khandavi, Gowtham MK and Nikhil Sodaye lasting three minutes and 32 seconds on the pitch and getting a couple of three dream run points. Then Rohan Singade frustrated the Telugu Yoddhas attackers, staying unconquered and earning a dream run point. The lead for Telugu Yoddhas, at the end of Turn 1, was just seven points.

Odisha Juggernauts consolidated that advantage with a brilliant attacking turn. They sent back Telugu Yoddhas first batch in a minute and 37 seconds. Their second batch only fared marginally better, staying on the mat for a minute and 48 seconds. Batch 3 did come within fifteen seconds of a dream run point but that did little to reverse the momentum. Odisha Juggernauts headed into the second innings with a strong 23-10 lead.

Things did not get any better for Telugu Yoddhas in Turn 3. Odisha Juggernauts’ first batch of Omkar Sonwane, Dipesh More and Nikhil B lasted three minutes and 57 seconds on the mat, earning two dream run points. Their second batch did not last long but two members of their third batch remained unbeaten as Odisha Juggernauts took a 25-24 lead into the final turn. Their attackers had no problems closing the match off.

Earlier, Mumbai Khiladis recorded their second win of Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2, downing Rajasthan Warriors 29-27.

Rajasthan Warriors got their match off to a brilliant start. Their first batch of Satej Patil, Vrushab Wagh and Vijay Hajare scored three dream run points. Hajare, in particular, frustrated the Mumbai Khiladis attackers, spending a minute and 45 seconds on the mat. Mumbai Khiladis only managed to send back two more players in the turn, which meant that they only carried a 10-3 advantage into Turn 2.

That advantage was easily subverted by Rajasthan Warriors in Turn 2 as their attackers sent back two Mumbai Khiladis batches and a player from the third. Mumbai Khiladis did manage two dream run points, but trailed 12-17, going into the second innings.

Rajasthan Warriors’ first batch of Turn 3 missed out on a dream run point by just seven seconds. Their second batch did not manage a dream run point either, and with a player from their third batch getting sent back, Mumbai Khiladis had a route back into the match. Sreejesh S added four attacking points to the four he had in the first innings.

Mumbai Khiladis’ defenders took full advantage of the glimmer of hope that their attackers gave them. Rajasthan Warriors sent back Mumbai Khiladis’ first batch early to come within a couple of dismissals of winning the match. But the second batch of Gajanan Shengal, Sreejesh S and P Siva Reddy put on a brilliant defensive display, bagging three dream run points. Siva Reddy managed to stay unbeaten, giving his team the win.

On Monday, Telugu Yoddhas will take on Gujarat Giants while Chennai Quick Guns will take on Rajasthan Warriors.

The exciting action of Ultimate Kho Kho will be telecast on Sony Sports Network’s channels and SonyLiv with live coverage of two matches daily starting at 7.30pm IST.

Shadloui, Gaurav steer Puneri Paltan to nail-biting 29-26 win over Tamil Thalaivas

7th January, MUMBAI: Puneri Paltan edged past Tamil Thalaivas in a thrilling contest to win 29-26 in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 match at the DOME by NSCI in Mumbai on Sunday. Mohammadreza Chiyaneh Shadloui (5 tackle points and 3 raid points) and Gaurav Khatri (6 tackle points) were Puneri Paltan’s best players, while Tamil Thalaivas’ skipper Sagar (7 tackle points) was their star performer.

The opening 20 minutes witnessed a see-saw battle between the two teams. Narender gave Tamil Thalaivas a dream start as he scalped a SUPER RAID to begin the match and Puneri Paltan were immediately forced onto the back foot. As the half wore on, both teams traded the lead and neither was able to take control of the proceedings as they both adopted a defensive approach.

A strategic 1st half ended with Puneri Paltan leading 12-11. It was the lowest number of points the side had scored all season.

Tamil Thalaivas began the half with a SUPER TACKLE as Sagar and Himanshu trapped Mohit Goyat. However, that did not stop Puneri Paltan from cruising ahead as Aslam Inamdar got the better of Sagar to inflict the 1st ALL OUT of the game. The table toppers held a narrow lead at 17-16 in the 24th minute.

The very next raid saw Shadloui escape with a SUPER RAID as he tagged two defenders and grabbed a bonus point. With Narender unable to score the big points, Tamil Thalaivas banked on their defence for points and a fine tackle from skipper Sagar on Pankaj Mohite saw him complete a High 5. It was then Shadloui’s turn to do the same as he stopped Narender with a rock-solid hold to claim his 5th tackle point in the 28th minute.

Tamil Thalaivas produced a mind-blowing comeback in the dying stages of the game. Two SUPER TACKLES – from M. Abishek and Sagar – saw Tamil Thalaivas trail by just 3 points in the 36th minute. And then a 3rd SUPER TACKLE from Nitesh Kumar in the 38th minute reduced the deficit to just 1 point.

It all boiled down to the last raid, where the Tamil Thalaivas were playing with 3 men and Puneri Paltan had a do-or-die raid. Aslam went on a pursuit raid and claimed a touch on Nitesh, but the on-field umpires ruled in Tamil Thalaivas’ favour and awarded them 2 points. That meant the scores were tied at 28-28. However, Puneri Paltan reviewed the decision and the TV umpire overturned the decision as Aslam and team wrapped up a nail-biting match by picking up their 7th win on the trot.

85th Youth and Junior National TT-Day 2

Kolkata, January 7: Maharashtra and Haryana, the top two seeds, are in good health and form for a possible showdown in the final of the Under-19 Girls team championships in the 85th edition of the UTT Inter-State Youth and Junior National Table Tennis Championships at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, as they pooh-poohed their respective opponents, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, in the quarterfinals with an identical 3-0 wins today.

Later tonight, Maharashtra will take on Delhi, who ousted hosts West Bengal 3-0, while Haryana will clash with Gujarat, who beat Rajasthan (TTFI 1) 3-1 in the semifinals.

The combination of Sayali Wani, Pritha Vartikar and Taneesha Kotecha proved too good for Tamil Nadu’s Shriya Anand, Kavyashree Baskar and Ananya Muralidharan. In the case of Haryana, Suhana won her singles, including the reverse, after Saanvi Dargan lost the third rubber to Sahana Murthy 1-3, and Prithoki Chakraborti accounted for Trupti Purohit.

But it was a disappointing end for the hosts as the West Bengal girls went down without a fight. After Lakshita Narang gave Delhi the lead when she beat Saanvi Roy 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5, Vanshika Mudgal won the crucial second rubber against Syndrela Das 3-2.

Vanshika countered well against the tricky Syndrela, who matched the Delhi girl stroke for stroke and kept her hopes alive until the fourth game when she tied 2-2. But in the decider, Syndrala had her chance after deuce, but Vanshika claimed the last two crucial points to put Delhi 2-0 up. Riddhima Kapoor, with a nice cushion, ran through the third rubber so quickly to beat Nandini Saha 11-3, 11-8, 11-9, ensuring themselves at least a bronze medal.

After Rajasthan beat Telangana, their girls must have nursed the ambition of reaching the medal round. But Gujarat did not waste time and pushed their opponents to the ropes.

All the seeded teams, except for third-seeded Telangana, survived the knockout heat and moved into the quarterfinals. However, third seed Telangana bowed out 1-3 in the pre-quarterfinals to Rajasthan (TTFI 1), giving the team from the south a rude shock even as the latter celebrated their calculated triumph to live in the moment. After all, the girls knew they were clashing with Gujarat, a hard nut to crack, in the quarterfinals.

Samaira Sharma was the star performer for Rajasthan, who wrote both the opening and ending script. The free-flowing Samaira first defeated Shreshta Kontham Reddy 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5. But Sunidhi Dewan failed to consolidate their position and lost the second rubber to Satya Aspathi 6-11, 7-11, 13-15.

However, Anushka Acharya made amends in the third rubber, winning it 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5 against Nikhita Hardandhi. When the Telangana paddler equalled the score, it was anybody’s tie, but Anushka kept a cool head and beat her opponent comfortably in the decider.

Samaira, playing her reverse singles, dropped a game to Satya after beginning aggressively. But she steadied and outsmarted the Telangana girl to win 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6.

In the other matches, top-seed Maharashtra and second-seed Haryana sharpened their knives with clinical (3-0) performances against their rivals, Chandigarh and Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu, Delhi, West Bengal and Karnataka. But Gujarat, with the help of their import Oishiki Joardar, put it across Odisha 3-1 in their pre-quarterfinal tie.

If Opponents Stop Arjun Deshwal, Others Will Step Up, Says Jaipur Pink Panthers’ Captain Sunil Malik

Mumbai, 7th January, 2024: The Jaipur Pink Panthers, who are the defending champions, have been on a six-match unbeaten streak, and closed out the first week of the new year, with a resounding win against U Mumba, in the presence of the Bachchan family, in Mumbai during Pro Kabaddi League Season 10. The Jaipur Pink Panthers defeated U Mumba 41-31, in another instalment of one of the most storied rivalries in the Pro Kabaddi League.

A ten-point win against the mighty U Mumba, in their own backyard meant that the Jaipur Pink Panthers’ leadership group was mighty pleased. Skipper Sunil Malik was all praise for Arjun Deshwal after the match, saying, “Arjun was in fine form against U Mumba, scoring important raid points for us. Along with him, the likes of V Ajith and Bhavani Rajput also put in a fine performance in the raiding department. We played as a complete team.”

For the Jaipur Pink Panthers, Arjun Deshwal stood out yet again, scoring a total of 17 points, of which 16 were raid points. He had 15 successful raids out of 20. However, the Sunil Malik is not perturbed about the fact that other teams might target him. He said, “If the opposition teams try to slow down Arjun in any game, we have the likes of Ajith, Bhavani, Rahul Chaudhari, along with some young talented players in the squad, who can step up when needed. We have enough time before our next game to sort out such things.”

The Jaipur Pink Panthers were aware that they would not have it easy against U Mumba, and had made plans accordingly. Opening up further on how they worked out their plans, the captain said, “We had made our plans for the opposition players and were keen to execute them properly. The U Mumba raiders are good, but we were clear on not allowing the likes of Guman Singh any bonus points during the game. Amirmohammad Zafardanesh was also someone we didn’t want to concede bonus points too, as those points can be difficult to cover up at times.”

Up next for the Jaipur Pink Panthers will be a very important phase, as they play their home leg in Jaipur (12-17 January). The Season 9 champions will face the Telugu Titans in their opening game in Jaipur and aren’t taking them lightly. “We can’t take any team lightly during the Pro Kabaddi League. All the 12 teams involved are good squads and we will go in with solid preparations and hope to do well on the mat.”

From Yuva Kabaddi to the big leagues: The rise of young Bengal Warriors’ raider Nitin Kumar

Mumbai, 7th January 2023: With 67 raid points in eight matches, young right-raider Nitin Kumar Dhankad has been a revelation for the Bengal Warriors in Season 10 of the Pro Kabaddi League. At 22, he has the second-highest raid points in his team, behind the mighty Maninder Singh who is second on the charts in the opening stages of the season with 89 Raid Points to his name. And it is no surprise that the young star is so good, given where he started his career as a raider.

“I started my career at the Pardeep Narwal Academy in Sonipat under coach Naresh Narwal. I have always had the support of my family. My family has never had a problem with me playing Kabaddi, right from when I started, till now that I am a kabaddi player with the Bengal Warriors,” said the young raider speaking ahead of their next match against the Haryana Steelers on January 7.

His talent in the sport of Kabaddi was quite evident, and eventually, he began proving himself in the Yuva Kabaddi Series with the Hampi Heroes in 2022. Nitin showed his class as a raider, with his team finishing third in the tournament. The Haryana-based youngster is proud of his performance and that helped him seal a contract with the Capri Sport-owned side.

“Participating in the Yuva Kabaddi league was a very good experience for me. After that, we had a trial for the Pro Kabaddi League, Where I performed to the best of my abilities. After that, I played a couple of tournaments in Mumbai where I performed well.

“I am very grateful to Capri Sports who have given me a chance to pursue a career in Kabaddi, and playing for the Bengal Warriors in the Pro Kabaddi League is now a dream come true. The rise of a league like the PKL has been a grace for Kabaddi players and now with the Yuva Kabaddi Series developing players like me has given us a lot of hope for the future, both economically and as a fan of Kabaddi,” said an emotional Nitin.

The Bengal Warriors and their form in season 10 of the PKL makes for a bright future, believes the right raider. “Winning and losing is a part of this game. Here and there we can make mistakes, but we need to learn how to work on those mistakes. We need to talk to each other and work with each other so that we can improve the team together as a group.

“We have almost half a season left and a lot more to offer the team. When we leave here at the end of the season, we will learn a lot more than we did at the start of the season. We have 2 matches in Mumbai for this leg of the pro kabaddi league. We are going to give everything that we can as a team and win both matches,” concluded Nitin.

After the formation of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu, the sports department has seen a new dawn. Like all other industries, the sports industry has also progressed and have numerous achievements to show. Our model of governance is a guide for the Indian Union in the field of sports as well and now we are going to host the 6th Khelo India Youth Games from January 19- 31, 2024.

In the past, we successfully conducted the 44th Chess Olympiad and our efforts were appreciated across the world. Similarly, we are making all arrangements to successfully conduct the Khelo India Games as per the instructions of the Hon’ble Chief Minister. We are constantly conducting various programs to take this national level competition across Tamil Nadu and the whole country.

Khelo India Games will be held in 4 cities in Tamil Nadu namely Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai. Promotion vehicles have been launched today to convey the importance of this. Representing the pride of Tamil Nadu, Velunachiyar’s figure and flame will travel across Tamil Nadu with this vehicle.

These vehicles will go to schools, colleges and tourist spots in every district. During the visit of this vehicle, a program will be held in which ministers, members of the legislature, district collectors, students and general public will participate in every district. Also, mini-marathon and vehicle rally will be held at the places where vehicles are going.

In order to attract the attention of the students, various competition like Khelo India logo drawing competition and an essay competition on Velunachiyar figure and torch will be held in these districts. Every day is like a festival where these vehicles go.

Due to the steps taken by the government for sports development, many recognitions are also coming our way.

Recently Tamil Nadu was conferred the Best State promoting sports award by the Confederation of Indian Industries. The Chennai Open Chess Series was held last month and it once again underlined that Chennai means Chess and chess means Chennai. We also conducted various competitions including CM Trophy Sports Tournament, Asian Champions Trophy, Squash World Cup, World Surfing League, HCL Cyclothon and Junior Hockey.

The government has also been instrumental in helping Tamil Nadu sportsmen and women in succeed in these competitions. The Chief Minister started the Tamil Nadu Champions Foundation so that finances should not be a barrier for sportspersons. Through this foundation, we provided financial assistance of Rs. 4 crores to sportspersons.

Also, 48 players from Tamil Nadu have bagged 28 medals in the 19th Asian Games in China. These medallists have been given a higher incentive of Rs.9.40 crores. An incentive of Rs 5 crore has been distributed among sportsmen and women who have achieved success at the national and international level in Boxing, Fencing and Roller Skating.

The Tamil Nadu team which won gold in the National Senior Women’s Football Tournament was given an incentive of Rs. 60 lakh.

R Praggnanandhaa, who won the silver medal in the World Cup Chess Tournament, was awarded Rs 30 lakh. Incentives are also being given to differently abled sportspersons who are performing at the national and international stage.

An MoU has been signed with Odisha state for their players to train in Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu players to train in Odisha. Also, an agreement has been signed with Jwala Gutta Academy to train badminton players. As part of the agreement, 28 players are undergoing training in Hyderabad.

The state government has also appointed 76 coaches after a gap of 12 years while the likes of Vaishali, Harinder pal Singh, Ramesh and Kavita Selvaraj from Tamil Nadu have received the highest sporting awards given by the Union Government.

We are now looking forward to setting similar standards during the conduct of the Khelo India Games.

The Nehru Stadium in Chennai has been renovated at a cost of Rs.10 crore for these Games. Around 6000 players from all over India are expected to participate in Khelo India Games.

Leandro González Pírez Completes Transfer to River Plate from Inter Miami

MIAMI, FL – Inter Miami CF has finalized the transfer of center back Leandro González Pírez to River Plate, confirming the Argentine defender’s permanent return to his native country’s prestigious club.

González Pírez, 31, originally made the move to River Plate on loan from Inter Miami nearly two years ago, a loan which included an option to buy. Having made a notable impact during his time in MLS, he leaves the league with a record of 5 goals and 11 assists in 141 regular-season appearances.

His MLS journey included a successful stint with Atlanta United from 2017 to 2019, during which time he contributed to the team’s MLS Cup victory in 2018 and received an All-Star selection in 2019. González Pírez also had a brief period at Liga MX’s Club Tijuana before joining Inter Miami for their inaugural season in 2020.

Known for his defensive prowess and leadership, González Pírez’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in his career as he joins one of Argentina’s most storied football clubs. Inter Miami and MLS fans will remember his contributions to the league as he embarks on this new venture with River Plate.

New England Revolution Welcomes Goalkeeper Henrich Ravas

FOXBOROUGH, MA — The New England Revolution has announced the signing of goalkeeper Henrich Ravas from Widzew Łódź, a Polish top-flight team. Ravas has committed to the Revolution through the 2026 MLS season, with an option for 2027.

Sporting director Curt Onalfo praised Ravas’ progress and abilities, noting, “His physical traits and top-flight European experience should allow for a seamless transition to MLS.”

Ravas, 26, has accumulated 161 professional appearances, including his time at Derby County and Slovakian club FK Senica. While he has yet to debut for Slovakia’s senior team, he served as the third-string goalkeeper during the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Head coach Caleb Porter expressed optimism about Ravas’ potential, citing his consistent growth and experience as indicators of his readiness to contribute to the Revolution’s success.

Ravas’ acquisition comes after the Revolution transferred Djordje Petrovic to Chelsea FC and faced subsequent goalkeeping changes. Ravas is expected to bring stability to the position as the team prepares for the upcoming MLS season and their Concacaf Champions Cup campaign.

The Revolution, under the new leadership of Caleb Porter, will start their 2024 league season against D.C. United on February 24 and face CA Independiente de La Chorrera in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round One prior to their MLS kickoff.

Cardinals Bolster Bullpen with Acquisition of Andrew Kittredge

ST. LOUIS, MO. — The St. Louis Cardinals have strengthened their pitching staff by trading for right-handed reliever Andrew Kittredge from the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, the Rays will receive outfielder Richie Palacios.

Kittredge, 33, brings a wealth of experience to the Cardinals, including a standout All-Star season in 2021 with an impressive 1.88 ERA across 57 games. The Washington native has been a dependable pitcher throughout his seven-season tenure with Tampa Bay, compiling an 18-7 record and a 3.65 ERA.

Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak expressed confidence in the new addition: “We are excited to add Andrew’s experience and proven abilities to our bullpen. Andrew was an All-Star reliever, and we think his addition will benefit us greatly now that he is back to full health.”

Having overcome Tommy John surgery, Kittredge returned to form in the 2023 season, helping the Rays to a Wild Card berth with a 2-0 record and 3.09 ERA in 14 games. He boasts one of the best career winning percentages among pitchers with at least 180 appearances since 2017.

The Cardinals have acquired a pitcher known for his resilience and effectiveness, particularly during his All-Star season when he recorded a 0.96 WHIP, ranking seventh among American League relief pitchers.

Kittredge was initially drafted by Seattle in 2008 and later joined them as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He moved to Tampa Bay in a trade in 2016 that also involved Taylor Motter going to the Mariners.

Palacios, who joined the Cardinals mid-season last year, will now take his talents to Tampa Bay, hoping to make an impact with the Rays as Kittredge aims to fortify the Cardinals’ bullpen for the upcoming season.

Rays Trade Andrew Kittredge for Cardinals’ Richie Palacios

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have announced a new trade, acquiring outfielder Richie Palacios from the St. Louis Cardinals in return for right-handed pitcher Andrew Kittredge.

Palacios, 26, joined the Cardinals midway through the last season and made an immediate impact. In 32 games, he hit .258 with a solid .516 slugging percentage, contributing six doubles and six home runs. He spent the earlier part of the season with Triple-A Memphis following a trade from Cleveland.

Since his selection by Cleveland in the 2018 draft, Palacios made his major league debut in 2022 and has demonstrated his batting capabilities across both major and minor league levels.

Andrew Kittredge, 33, has been a reliable arm for the Rays, posting a 3.09 ERA across 14 appearances in 2023. Since being acquired from Seattle in 2016, Kittredge has played a versatile role for Tampa Bay, recording 15 saves and a 3.65 ERA in his tenure with the team.

This trade reflects the Rays’ strategy to inject more power into their batting lineup with the addition of Palacios while the Cardinals bolster their bullpen with Kittredge’s experience and proven track record.

White Sox Sign Veteran Catcher Martín Maldonado to One-Year Deal

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have reinforced their roster by signing veteran catcher Martín Maldonado to a one-year contract worth $4.25 million, which includes an option for the 2025 season. To accommodate this new addition, infielder Zach Remillard has been designated for assignment.

Maldonado is set to earn $4 million in 2024, with the possibility of an extension for 2025 at the same salary or a $250,000 buyout. The 37-year-old catcher brings significant experience to the White Sox, coming off a season with the Houston Astros where he tied a career-high with 15 home runs and maintained a strong presence behind the plate with 116 starts at catcher.

Known for his defensive prowess, Maldonado’s catcher’s ERA ranked sixth in the major leagues last year. His contributions to the Astros include catching a no-hitter in August 2023 against Cleveland. The Puerto Rican native has a notable history of accolades, including a Gold Glove Award in 2017 and several finalist nominations for the honor.

Throughout his career, Maldonado has caught an impressive roster of pitchers, including Cy Young Award winners and All-Stars. He has a wealth of postseason experience, making him third in baseball history for the most starts at catcher in the playoffs, surpassing Yogi Berra.

Offensively, Maldonado holds a career batting average of .207 with 111 home runs across 13 major league seasons with several teams. His relationship with Pedro Grifol, the White Sox’s current bench coach, dates back to their time together with the Kansas City Royals.

The 29-year-old Remillard batted .252 with the White Sox last season but has been moved off the 40-man roster following the acquisition of Maldonado. The White Sox maintain a full 40-man roster as they prepare for the upcoming season with Maldonado expected to play a key role in their 2024 campaign.

Rays Trade for Infielder José Caballero, Send Luke Raley to Mariners

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have strengthened their infield options by acquiring José Caballero from the Seattle Mariners, sending outfielder Luke Raley in return.

Caballero, 27, showcased his speed on the bases with 26 stolen bases during the 2023 season, a figure that not only ranked him second among American League rookies but also as the third-highest in Mariners rookie history. His impressive success rate of 89.7 percent on steal attempts was one of the best in the league.

The Panama City native, originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017, joined the Mariners in 2019 through a trade. Over the past season, he achieved a .221 batting average, contributing nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 26 RBI over 104 games.

Raley, 29, brought power to the Rays’ lineup last season with 19 home runs, 23 doubles, and 49 RBI. His 2023 campaign marked his first Opening Day roster inclusion, although it was cut short due to a cervical strain injury in late September.

The exchange reflects the Rays’ strategy to bolster infield depth and speed on the bases, while the Mariners gain a power-hitting outfielder in Raley, who will look to bounce back from last season’s injury. Both players are set to bring new dynamics to their respective teams in the upcoming season.
