Connor McDavid Hits 900 Points Milestone

EDMONTON – In an electrifying display of skill and finesse, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid etched his name into the history books, becoming the fifth-fastest player in NHL history to reach 900 points. This remarkable feat was achieved during the Oilers’ commanding 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Rogers Place on Tuesday.

McDavid’s milestone moment came with an exceptional behind-the-back assist to Zach Hyman, marking the Oilers’ second goal of the game. The play began with Leon Draisaitl sweeping the puck to McDavid in the corner. Demonstrating his extraordinary vision and skill, McDavid, with his back to the play, executed a flawless backhand pass through two Flyers defenders, finding Hyman en route to the net. Hyman capitalized on this opportunity, deftly lifting a backhand shot past Flyers goaltender Carter Hart.

The assist was not just a highlight-reel moment but also a significant statistical achievement for McDavid, bringing him to 900 points in just 602 games. This accomplishment places him in the esteemed company of Hockey Hall of Famers: Wayne Gretzky (385 games), Mario Lemieux (463), Mike Bossy (582), and Peter Stastny (599).

Teammate Zach Hyman praised McDavid’s unparalleled playmaking ability, stating, “He just makes plays that nobody else can make. That’s why he is who he is.” McDavid’s impact on the game and his team is undeniable, as evidenced by his 10 five-point games, the most among active NHL players, and a career-best six-point game against the Colorado Avalanche in 2019.

The Oilers’ recent performance under the guidance of coach Kris Knoblauch and assistant Paul Coffey has been remarkable, with the team amassing a 16-6-0 record since November 12. The victory against the Flyers extended their winning streak to six games, bringing them within a point of the Arizona Coyotes for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.

McDavid’s journey to this milestone has been laden with accolades, including five Art Ross Trophies, three Hart Trophies, and four Ted Lindsey Awards. Despite an early-season upper-body injury, he has bounced back to dominate the scoring race, currently standing third with 53 points (20 goals, 41 assists) in 33 games.

Reflecting on his achievement, McDavid humbly noted, “It’s another nice milestone, one that’s kind of along the way.” The Oilers, rejuvenated and climbing the ranks, are set to extend their winning streak in their upcoming game against the Ottawa Senators.

This milestone for McDavid is not just a personal achievement but a testament to his extraordinary talent and influence in the NHL, further solidifying his status as one of the greatest players of his generation.

NHL Department of Player Safety to Review Jason Zucker’s Conduct in Coyotes-Panthers Game

Arizona Coyotes forward Jason Zucker is scheduled for a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety this Wednesday, following an incident involving Florida Panthers center Nick Cousins. The event in question, which has stirred up considerable attention, occurred at 19:09 of the second period during the Panthers’ dominant 4-1 victory at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, on Tuesday.

Zucker, who is now facing potential disciplinary action, was penalized during the game for boarding and fighting, alongside receiving a game misconduct. This sequence of events led to his ejection from the game, significantly impacting the Coyotes’ performance for the remainder of the match.

The Department of Player Safety is primarily focusing on the boarding/interference aspect of Zucker’s actions for supplemental discipline. Boarding, a term used in ice hockey to define a penalty against a player who dangerously checks an opponent into the boards of the rink, is a significant infraction, especially when it results in injury or displays potential to cause harm. The intervention by the Department of Player Safety underlines the NHL’s ongoing commitment to player safety and maintaining a standard of conduct within the game.

It’s important to note that while the hearing is set to review the boarding/interference charge, the Department of Player Safety maintains the authority to adjust the categorization of the infraction upon closer examination of the incident. This flexibility allows for a comprehensive review process, ensuring that the disciplinary action, if any, is appropriate to the nature and severity of the offense.

The outcome of this hearing could have implications not only for Zucker and the Coyotes but also for the overall enforcement of rules within the NHL. The decision made by the Department of Player Safety will be closely watched by players, coaches, and fans alike, as it could set a precedent for similar incidents in the future.

As the Arizona Coyotes navigate through their season, the potential absence of Zucker, depending on the hearing’s outcome, could pose a challenge for the team’s strategy and composition. On the Florida Panthers’ side, the focus remains on their impressive season performance, as they continue to solidify their standing in the league.

The NHL community awaits the decision from the Department of Player Safety, anticipating how it will shape the conversations around on-ice conduct and the enforcement of rules aimed at protecting the players.

Ryan Hartman of Minnesota Wild Fined for High-Sticking Incident Against Jets’ Cole Perfetti

In a recent development from the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety, Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman has been subjected to a fine of $4,427.08 for his high-sticking infraction against Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti. This fine is notable as it represents the maximum penalty permissible under the terms of the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The incident, which has garnered significant attention, took place during NHL Game No. 564 hosted in Minnesota on Sunday, December 31.

The contentious moment unfolded at 1:51 of the first period, marking an early shift in the game’s dynamics. Details of the incident indicate that Hartman’s stick made high contact with Perfetti, an action strictly regulated under NHL rules due to the potential for injury. The Department of Player Safety, after reviewing the incident, deemed the act serious enough to warrant the maximum fine.

Financial penalties in the NHL, such as the one levied on Hartman, are not merely symbolic. The amount fined is allocated to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund, a resource designed to offer support to players facing financial or personal hardships. This fund is an integral part of the NHL’s commitment to the welfare of its players, both current and retired.

The fine imposed on Hartman serves as a reminder of the NHL’s stringent enforcement of rules pertaining to player safety. High-sticking, known for its potential to cause serious injury, is a point of emphasis for league officials keen on maintaining the integrity of the game and the safety of its players.

As the Minnesota Wild continue their season, the impact of this incident and the subsequent fine on team dynamics and Hartman’s gameplay remains to be seen. For the Winnipeg Jets and Cole Perfetti, the focus shifts back to their ongoing campaign, navigating the challenges of a grueling NHL season.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety continues to monitor and address on-ice incidents, upholding the league’s standards and commitment to player safety. This recent ruling underscores the balance the NHL seeks to maintain between the competitive nature of the sport and the well-being of its players.

Jackson and Love Shine as NFL Week 17’s Top Performers

As the NFL regular season wrapped up its Week 17, standout performances across the league brought excitement and record-breaking plays. Leading the charge were quarterbacks Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers, both clinching the Offensive Player of the Week in their respective conferences.

AFC Highlights: Lamar Jackson’s Record-Tying Brilliance

The Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson not only led his team to victory but also tied an NFL record with his performance. Jackson passed for 321 yards and five touchdowns, boasting a perfect passer rating of 158.3. This feat positioned him as the second quarterback in NFL history with multiple career games of five or more touchdown passes and a perfect passer rating, sharing this accolade with Ben Roethlisberger.

On defense, cornerback Rasul Douglas of the Buffalo Bills made waves, defending three passes and securing two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. His efforts crowned him the Defensive Player of the Week in the AFC, marking a highlight in a season where multiple-game interceptions have been a rare spectacle.

NFC Standouts: Jordan Love’s Breakout Game

Jordan Love stepped into the limelight for the Green Bay Packers, delivering a stunning performance that earned him the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Love threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns, achieving a 125.3 passer rating. His accomplishment of five games with three or more touchdown passes and a rating over 100 ties him for the most in the NFL this season.

The defensive prowess in the NFC was represented by Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. He became the third player in the league this season to amass over five tackles, four pass deflections, and two interceptions in a single game, a testament to his growing impact on the Bears’ defense.

Special Teams Accolades

The special teams’ contributions were headlined by New York Giants’ Gunner Olszewski, who delivered a 94-yard punt return touchdown, the longest in the NFL this season. In the AFC, Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker scored all 19 of his team’s points through field goals, tying the record for most kicking points in a single game for the season.

As teams gear up for the postseason, these performances from Week 17 have set the stage for an electrifying playoff atmosphere. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if these players can continue their high-caliber play when it matters most.

Orlando City SC Secures Iván Angulo on Long-Term Deal, Bolstering Squad for Future Campaigns

Orlando City SC has made a decisive move to secure the future of one of their key players, Iván Angulo. The club announced on Wednesday that the Colombian winger has been signed through the 2025 MLS season, with an option to extend for an additional year.

Angulo, 24, originally joined Orlando City on loan from Brazilian Serie A club Palmeiras. During his tenure with the Lions, he has made a significant impact, tallying five goals and eleven assists across 43 appearances. His contribution was particularly notable in the team’s 2022 US Open Cup victory, where his skills and attacking prowess played a crucial role.

Luiz Muzzi, Orlando City’s Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations and General Manager, praised Angulo’s influence on the team. “Iván has been so impactful for us these last few years, not only with his creativity in the attacking phase of play but also with his defensive pressure from the wing,” Muzzi said. He highlighted how Angulo has seamlessly integrated into the team and become a vital part of their success.

Orlando City’s decision to sign Angulo on a long-term basis aligns with their broader strategy of building a strong, cohesive team for future seasons. This is evident in their recent activities, which include re-signing former loanee Wilder Cartegena and parting ways with midfielder Mauricio Pereyra, who has moved to Nacional in Uruguay. Additionally, the team has transferred center back Antônio Carlos to Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense and reportedly signed Seattle Sounders legend Nicolás Lodeiro to fill the No. 10 role.

The club is coming off a historic 2023 season, achieving a club-record 63 points and finishing with the second-best record (18W-7L-9D) in MLS. This outstanding performance has secured them a spot in next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup. Fans eagerly anticipate the team’s next campaign, which kicks off on February 24th against CF Montréal.

Orlando City SC’s commitment to strengthening its roster and retaining key players like Angulo demonstrates its ambition to continue being a formidable force in MLS. The club’s actions in the transfer market suggest a clear vision for the future, aiming to build on recent successes and achieve greater heights in the coming seasons.

UKK: Defensive masterclass sees Odisha Juggernauts down Rajasthan Warriors in Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2

Cuttack, January 3, 2024: Defending champions Odisha Juggernauts notched up a 32-21 victory over Rajasthan Warriors, in Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack on Wednesday.

The victory was built on the back of a stellar defensive performance by Odisha Juggernauts that saw them score 10 dream run points.

Ultimate Kho Kho, promoted by Amit Burman in collaboration with the Kho Kho Federation of India, became the first Indian sports league to secure Series A funding, courtesy the UK-based BNP Group.

Odisha Juggernauts defenders seized the initiative in Turn 1 with perhaps the greatest defensive performance in Ultimate Kho Kho history. The first batch of Vishal, Gowtham MK and Dilip Khandavi stayed on the mat for a whopping six minutes and 22 seconds, scoring seven dream run points. Dilip, in particular, ran rings around the Rajasthan Warriors attackers. With all three players of Odisha Juggernauts’ second batch remaining unconquered, they took a 7-6 lead into Turn 2. It was the first time in Ultimate Kho Kho history that a defending team had taken the lead in a turn.

Rajasthan Warriors set about limiting the damage in Turn 2, with their first batch of Vijay Hajare, Sushant Hajare and Vrushab Wagh notching up three dream run points. With only one member of the second batch getting out, Odisha Juggernauts’ lead, going into the second innings, was limited to six points.

Rajasthan Warriors made a strong start to Turn 3, sending back Odisha Juggernauts’s first batch early. However, they were frustrated by the second batch of Dipesh More, Nikhil B and Omkar Sonawane, with the latter staying on the mat for three dream run points. That left Rajasthan Warriors with a slender 21-18 lead going into the final turn. The Odisha Juggernauts attackers had no problems overturning that in Turn 4.

In an earlier game, Telugu Yoddhas stamped their dominance over an off-colour Mumbai Khiladis, notching up a 40-22 victory. This was the biggest margin of victory this season as Telugu Yoddhas leapfrogged Gujarat Giants into second place.

It was Telugu Yoddhas who attacked first and they made the most of it, scoring 16 points in Turn 1 while only allowing their opponents a single dream run point. It was a team effort from the Telugu Yoddhas attackers, with six different players contributing to their team’s tally.

They consolidated that advantage with a stunning defensive display in Turn 2. Their first batch of Pratik Waikar, Avdhut Patil and Aditya Ganpule stayed on the mat for five minutes and 17 seconds, garnering five dream run points. All three members of their second batch managed to remain unconquered as the first innings finished with Telugu Yoddhas leading 21-7. It was the lowest attacking turn of Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2.

It was always going to be a long road back from there for the Mumbai Khiladis and their fortunes did not change for the better in Turn 3. Their first batch lasted a mere minute and 33 seconds. Their third batch, consisting of Hrushikesh Murchavade, Sibin M and Pratik Devare, did fare better, scoring a dream run point. But that made little difference to the overall picture as Telugu Yoddhas went into the final turn with a mammoth 29-point lead.

Thursday will see Telugu Yoddhas take on leaders Chennai Quick Guns while Gujarat Giants will take on Rajasthan Warriors.

The exciting action of Ultimate Kho Kho will be telecast on Sony Sports Network’s channels and SonyLiv with live coverage of two matches daily starting at 7.30pm IST.

PKL 10: Puneri Paltan demolish U.P. Yoddhas to record sixth win on the trot

NOIDA, 3rd January 2024: Puneri Paltan recorded their sixth victory in a row beating the U.P. Yoddhas 40-31 in front of their home crowd at the last home game for U.P. Yoddhas at the Noida Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. Mohammadreza Chiyaneh’s brilliant defensive nous saw him log 7 points as captain Aslam Inamdar took 11 to keep his team at the top of the table.

In an electric, high scoring first half, it was the Paltans who started off quicker, not just logging quick raid points but also ensuring the U.P. Yoddhas record breaking raider Pardeep Narwal did not log any for the first 10 minutes of the game. It was high energy and high-risk play, initiated by Mohammadreza Chiyaneh and Aslam Inamdar which paid dividends. The Paltan inflicted the first ALL OUT in the first five minutes to take a 10-4 lead.

The setback woke the U.P. Yoddhas out of their slumber and despite Narwal’s inability to log points, they crawled back into the game. AS it was, it was just the lift Narwal needed, as he logged his first two points of the game in quick succession in the last five minutes of the half, before displaying a remarkable bit of strength to single handedly inflict an ALL OUT on the Paltan and drag the score to 20-18.

The Paltan did not let that setback hurry them into changing strategy, and they kept up their game plan and the lead through the second half. In a back and forth period though the U.P. Yoddhas kept them on their toes, and despite going down in numbers stayed within two points.

A SUPER TACKLE with five minutes left turned the game into a nailbiter, but almost immediately the Paltan killed the game off. They inflicted a second ALL OUT with barely two minutes left to take a seven-point lead, and then Akash Shinde applied the cherry, picking up a SUPER RAID to seal the game 40-31.

Cincinnati Reds Bolster Pitching Staff with Signing of Frankie Montas to One-Year Deal

CINCINNATI – In a significant move to strengthen their pitching rotation, the Cincinnati Reds have announced the acquisition of free agent right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas. The signing, confirmed by Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall, sees Montas joining the team on a one-year contract valued at $14 million for the 2024 season. The deal also includes a $20 million mutual option for 2025, alongside a $2 million team buyout.

Montas, who celebrated his 31st birthday on March 21, has been a notable figure in Major League Baseball (MLB), particularly remembered for his impressive 2021 season with the Oakland Athletics. That year, he finished sixth in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s (BBWAA) Cy Young Award voting, compiling a 13-9 record with a 3.37 ERA across 32 starts. His consistency was remarkable, as he allowed three earned runs or fewer in 29 of those 32 starts and pitched six or more innings in 21 games.

From 2018 to 2022, Montas boasted a 3.70 ERA, the fifth-lowest in the American League among pitchers with a minimum of 500.0 innings pitched. This impressive statistic places him in the company of elite pitchers like Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, Shane Bieber, and Framber Valdez.

However, Montas’ recent career has been marred by injury. The Dominican Republic native missed the first 160 games of the 2023 season with the New York Yankees due to a right shoulder surgery in February. His return was gradual, starting with two rehab outings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, followed by a single scoreless relief appearance for the Yankees on September 30 against Kansas City.

Montas, who began his MLB career with the Chicago White Sox in 2015, spent six seasons with the Athletics before being traded to the Yankees in a six-player deal on August 1, 2022. His postseason experience includes appearances in three games with the Athletics in 2020 and the Yankees in 2022.

Nick Krall expressed confidence in Montas’ abilities, stating, “We are excited to add a pitcher of Frankie’s caliber to our staff. We are confident he will return to the form that made him one of baseball’s best pitchers before he suffered the shoulder injury.”

To accommodate Montas on the Reds’ roster, catcher Austin Wynns has been designated for assignment. The Reds’ decision to bring in Montas reflects their commitment to enhancing their pitching staff and their belief in his ability to regain his top form. This acquisition could prove pivotal for the Reds as they prepare for the 2024 season, adding depth and experience to their pitching rotation.

Charlie McNeill Returns to Manchester United After Productive Loan Spell at Stevenage

Manchester United has welcomed back young striker Charlie McNeill following a successful loan stint with League One side Stevenage. The 20-year-old’s return to Old Trafford comes after an impactful period in the third tier of English football, showcasing his potential and scoring prowess.

McNeill initially joined Stevenage on a temporary transfer on September 1, fresh off an impressive performance in Manchester United’s EFL Trophy clash against Stockport County, where he notably scored during the penalty shootout. His impact at Stevenage was immediate, as he scored on his debut in a convincing 3-0 victory against Leyton Orient, signalling his scoring intent from the outset.

During his time with Stevenage, McNeill featured in two additional games and was on the bench as an unused substitute on four occasions. His contributions, although limited in number, were impactful, showcasing his skills and adaptation to the competitive nature of League One football.

Stevenage, under the guidance of manager Steve Evans, have been performing admirably in League One, currently positioned seventh in the table. They are in close contention for a play-off spot, with only goal difference separating them from Barnsley in the final play-off position. McNeill’s stint at the club coincided with this period of strong performance, contributing to the team’s positive momentum.

McNeill’s return to Manchester United marks another chapter in his evolving career. Having rejoined the Red Devils from Manchester City in the summer of 2020, he has been a part of United’s youth setup, gradually making his way up through the ranks. His loan spell at Newport County in the latter half of last season further added to his experience.

Highlighting his progression, McNeill made his senior debut for Manchester United in the Europa League tie against Real Sociedad in September 2022, an indication of the club’s faith in his abilities and potential.

Manchester United’s decision to recall McNeill is a clear indication of their plans to further integrate him into the senior setup, leveraging his recent experiences and growth. His return to Old Trafford is eagerly anticipated, with fans and the coaching staff keen to see how he fits into the team’s dynamic and contributes to their forward line.

Charlie McNeill’s journey, marked by a blend of youth development, loan experiences, and a senior team debut, mirrors the pathway many young talents follow in modern football, highlighting the importance of strategic loan moves in player development. His return to Manchester United is not just a homecoming but a step forward in his promising career.

Liverpool Recalls Defender Rhys Williams from Aberdeen Loan Spell

In a significant move for both the player and the club, Liverpool has recalled 22-year-old defender Rhys Williams from his loan spell at Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen. The decision marks a new phase in Williams’ career trajectory, as he returns to Anfield after gaining valuable experience in Scotland.

Rhys Williams, a product of Liverpool’s esteemed Academy, joined the Reds’ youth ranks at the tender age of ten. Over the years, he has progressed through the system, showcasing his defensive capabilities and potential. Williams’ journey at Liverpool has been marked by gradual development, culminating in 19 appearances for the first team under manager Jürgen Klopp.

Before his stint with Aberdeen, Williams had spells on loan at various clubs, including Kidderminster Harriers, Swansea City, and Blackpool. Each of these experiences has contributed to his growth as a player, offering him diverse challenges and opportunities to sharpen his skills.

At Aberdeen, Williams added to his resume, participating actively in the Scottish Premiership and gaining further first-team experience. His performances in Scotland have been closely monitored by Liverpool, leading to the decision to recall him midway through the season.

Williams’ return to Liverpool is seen as a strategic move by the club, possibly indicating Klopp’s plans to bolster the team’s defensive options. Given Liverpool’s rigorous playing style and the demands of competing on multiple fronts, including domestic and European competitions, Williams’ versatility and development could prove beneficial.

The young defender’s recall to Liverpool is a testament to his progress and the faith the club has in his abilities. It also aligns with Liverpool’s broader strategy of nurturing young talent, providing them with external opportunities for growth, and integrating them back into the team when deemed ready.

As Williams rejoins the Liverpool squad, all eyes will be on how Klopp plans to utilize his skills and whether this recall will translate into more first-team appearances for the young defender. His return adds depth to Liverpool’s defensive line and provides an exciting prospect for the team’s future defensive strategies.

Aston Villa Secures Future of Promising Defender Kerr Smith with New Contract, Loans Him to St Johnstone

Aston Villa has officially confirmed the signing of a new professional contract with their talented centre-back, Kerr Smith, further solidifying their commitment to nurturing young talent. In a strategic move to aid his development, Smith will join Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone on loan for the remainder of the season, a decision that has garnered much attention in football circles.

Kerr Smith, a rising star in Scotland’s youth international scene, made his move to Aston Villa in January 2022. Since his arrival, Smith has shown remarkable progress and has been a consistent performer for Aston Villa’s Under-21 squad. His contributions have been notably influential in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, where he has demonstrated a blend of robust defense and tactical acumen.

This new contract marks a significant milestone in Smith’s budding career, signaling Aston Villa’s faith in his potential and their investment in his future growth as a professional footballer. The decision to send him on loan to St Johnstone, currently positioned 10th in the Scottish Premiership, is a tactical one aimed at providing Smith with more first-team experience and exposure to top-level football.

At St Johnstone, Smith is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering their defense, bringing his unique skills and fresh perspective to the team. This move is not just a step forward for Smith but also for St Johnstone, who are keen on climbing up the league standings.

However, the loan deal is contingent upon receiving international clearance. Once cleared, Smith will be eligible to represent St Johnstone, offering him an invaluable opportunity to further hone his skills and make a significant impact in the Scottish Premiership.

Aston Villa’s strategy of developing young talents like Smith and providing them with practical experience through loan deals reflects a broader trend in football. It underscores the importance of balancing player development with competitive exposure, a philosophy that is increasingly shaping the future of football talent management.

Kerr Smith’s journey at St Johnstone will be closely watched by both Aston Villa and Scotland’s football enthusiasts, as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his career.

PKL 10: Arjun and Reza shine as Jaipur Pink Panthers ease past Haryana Steelers

NOIDA, 3rd January: Defending champions Jaipur Pink Panthers rode on Arjun Deshwal’s raiding brilliance as they beat Haryana Steelers 45-34 in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 match at the Noida Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

Arjun (14 raid points), Reza Mirbagheri (7 tackle points) and Ankush (5 tackle points) were the top performers for Jaipur Pink Panthers, while Chandran Ranjit (11 raid points) and Mohit Nandal (5 tackle points) were Haryana Steelers’ best players on the night.

There was a surprise in both teams’ starting 7 as Haryana Steelers raider Chandran got his first game of the season, while Rahul Chaudhari was named in the Jaipur Pink Panthers squad. The two veteran raiders began the proceedings for their teams and Chandran was off to a good start as he struck in each of his initial raids. It was only a matter of time before Arjun Deshwal joined the party, and when he did, he quickly swung the momentum in Jaipur Pink Panthers’ favour.

Arjun played an instrumental role in the first ALL OUT as he escaped Mohit’s ankle hold and then landed a back-kick on Mohit Nandal and then Rahul tagged Rahul Sethpal soon after to put his side ahead 17-13 with a little over 4 minutes to go. He then completed his Super 10 within the 1st half as his men went into the break with a healthy lead.

Haryana Steelers got off to a superb start in the 2nd half and some solid work from Mohit and Chandran got the side within the cusp of an ALL OUT, but SUPER TACKLES from Lucky Sharma and Reza helped the Jaipur Pink Panthers stay afloat. However, Chandran produced a multi-point raid in the 29th minute to finally grab the ALL OUT. The Haryana Steelers trailed only by 1 point at 28-29 at this point and were within touching distance of a comeback, but Arjun dashed their hopes.

Arjun, who was the most successful raider last season, got Mohit and Rahul first and then came back to oust Jaideep Dahiya and Vinay to lead his side to another ALL OUT. Jaipur Pink Panthers led by 9 points with 4 minutes to go and had the game in the bag. The match ended with Bhavani Rajput escaping Jaideep’s grasp as the Jaipur Pink Panthers notched up their 4th win in 5 games.

Kohli back in top 10 of MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings

Former India captain Virat Kohli has returned to the top 10 of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings while South Africa opener Dean Elgar has made a huge jump after his Player of the Match effort in the first Test of the two-match ICC World Test Championship series in Centurion, which the home side won by an innings and 32 runs to take a 1-0 lead.

Kohli, a formerly top-ranked batter who dropped out of the top 10 in mid-2022, has advanced four slots to ninth position after scores of 38 and 76 but is 103 ratings points adrift of top-ranked Kane Williamson of New Zealand (864 points). Joe Root is a close second in the list at 859 while Steve Smith is third with 820 rating points.

Left-hander Elgar’s knock of 185 has lifted him 19 places to 17th position as he leads the team in the second Test in Cape Town, which will be his last international match as he has announced his retirement after the series.

Others to gain after their performances in the first Test are first innings centurion KL Rahul (up 11 places to 51st) of India and Marco Jansen of South Africa, who has advanced in all three lists. Jansen, who scored 84 not out and finished with four wickets in the match, has progressed 13 places to 72nd among batters, is up three places to 22nd among bowlers and jumped from 13th to fifth in the list of all-rounders.

In the latest weekly update that also considers performances in the second Test between Australia and Pakistan, Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne has inched up one slot to seventh after notching a half-century in the first innings while Alex Carey (up four places to 41st) and Mitchel Marsh (up 16 places to 52nd) have also gained.

Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel (up one place to 13th), Abdullah Shafique (up three places to 21st) and Mohammed Rizwan (up four places to 27th) are the Pakistan batters to advance after the Melbourne Test, which Australia won by 79 runs to go 2-0 up in the three-Test series.

New England Revolution Secures Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng for 2024 Season

FOXBOROUGH, MA — The New England Revolution have officially re-signed midfielder/winger Emmanuel Boateng for the 2024 MLS season, with an option extending into 2025. This announcement comes as a significant move for the club, as it prepares for the upcoming competitive season.

Emmanuel “Ema” Boateng, 29, will continue his tenure with the Revolution, despite his contract option being declined at the end of the 2023 season. Last year, Boateng made a notable contribution to the team with two goals and three assists in 27 appearances, 16 of which were starts. His journey with the Revolution has been highlighted by being part of the 2021 Supporters’ Shield-winning team. Boateng’s MLS career also includes previous stints with LA Galaxy, D.C. United, and Columbus Crew, showcasing his extensive experience in the league.

Curt Onalfo, the Revolution’s sporting director, emphasized Boateng’s value in a recent statement. “Ema Boateng has been an important contributor to our attack and has been a productive player in our league throughout his entire career,” Onalfo said. “We are pleased to have Ema return to the club and look forward to seeing him on the field with the rest of the team as we get preseason training underway this month.”

Boateng’s return is particularly significant under the guidance of incoming manager Caleb Porter, who previously coached Boateng at Columbus during the 2020 season. His veteran presence and offensive versatility are expected to be key assets for the Revolution’s strategy.

In addition to retaining Boateng, the Revolution have been active in the offseason, completing the permanent transfer of Tomás Chancalay and acquiring fullback Nick Lima through a trade. These moves indicate a clear intent to bolster the squad’s strength and depth.

The Revolution are poised to make their first official appearance of the 2024 season in the Concacaf Champions Cup. They will face Club Atlético Independiente of Panama on February 21 in the away leg of their two-legged series. Following this, their MLS regular season kicks off on February 24 with an away game against D.C. United, scheduled for 7:30 pm ET and available on MLS Season Pass.

These developments signal an exciting and promising season ahead for the New England Revolution, as they aim to build on their previous successes and navigate the challenges of both domestic and international competitions.

The team is looking to rebound from a challenging 2023 season, where they finished last in the Western Conference with just 27 points, marked by a record of 5 wins, 17 losses, and 12 draws.

The Rapids are set to begin their 2024 campaign with a match against the Portland Timbers on February 24. This game, scheduled for 10:30 pm ET and available on MLS Season Pass, marks the start of a new era for the club under Armas’ leadership. From being a milkman, to the Adani Sportsline Owned Gujarat Giants – Deepak Madhav Aims for Glory

Cuttack, 3rd January 2023: Gujarat Giants’ ace defender Deepak Madhav has been a mainstay in the sport of Kho Kho for almost a decade. Having been signed on by the Adani Sportsline-owned team for the second season of the Ultimate Kho Kho League, which began on December 24, the 27-year-old defender is ready to take his game a notch up, but the road to stardom has not been easy for the Maharashtrian Kho Kho star.

Just as he was making his career, winning laurels and on the way to fame, his father suffered a serious health illness which forced him to work as a newspaper vendor as well as a milkman. Talking about his initial struggles, and why Kho Kho was the sport for him, Deepak said, “Kho Kho is a sport which does not need more than a shorts and sandal and a ground to play. Most of the other sports needed a lot of efforts which, at that moment, was not possible because my father had a heart surgery then. So, the burden was mostly on my brother so pursing any other sport was not a big possibility.

Despite this, his aim was fixed — playing for the Railways. He worked hard towards that goal, and did not let setbacks stop him from achieving his dreams. “When I started playing Kho Kho, I was always selected for the state but was never able to break into the nationals. Always in the stand-bys. During one such U18s State Championship, I performed very well through the knockouts and won a prize as well. This led to my selections in the nationals. This paved the way to the Maharashtra team and then the Senior Nationals and eventually the Railways side, which was my eventual dream.”

“It took me four attempts to break into the Railways team. In the first three tries the more senior members of the team got through so when I got selected for the Railways team, it was my breakthrough moment in the sport,” an emotional Deepak said.

His hard work has paid dividends. Deepak is now a regular India international, and a gold medal winner at the South Asian Games in 2018, even missing his sister’s wedding for the same. “I have sacrificed attending my sister’s wedding in 2018, and my brother’s wedding in 2019, for Kho Kho. In 2018, I was representing India at the South Asian Games in Nepal. We won the Gold for the country at the South Asian Games and this, I considered as one of my biggest achievements in the sport. The perfect return gift for my sister, and a very proud moment for my family,” recalled the defender.

And having missed out on the title in the season 1 of the Ultimate Kho Kho League, Deepak is ready to go the distance with the Giants, a team that he loves for a variety of reasons.

“I missed out on the trophy last time around by 5 seconds. This time, with the Gujarat Giants, I want to fulfil what I could not and secure the title for my team. We have received great support from the Adani Sportsline team, they’ve made us feel at home, kept us motivated to go for the win at all times,” he noted.

With season 2 of the Ultimate Kho Kho League turning towards the business end, the Gujarat Giants are well on their way to the final four. “I have played in a few teams over my career so far, and not just me, everyone will agree that this is one of the best team managements we could have found. They back us to the hilt and the overall feeling in the camp is also very good, and you can see it when we are playing,” the defender signed off.

IQOO partnering with Team Soul is another example of a top mobile device brand deepening their immersion in the gaming world. Additionally, artificial intelligence enhancements and Metaverse Gaming trends will open doors to a future where virtual worlds seamlessly blend with gaming narratives. Merging these technological trends with the surge of Esports tournaments with higher prize pools promises a year full of exciting opportunities for gamers and creators alike.”

According to the recently published “Leveling up: State of India Gaming FY’23” report by Lumikai in collaboration with Google, India’s gaming market hit $3.1 Bn in FY23 and is projected to reach $7.5 Bn by FY28, growing at a CAGR of 20%.

The Indian esports sector is set to experience significant growth in the upcoming year.

Perron’s Late Heroics Lift Red Wings to 5-3 Comeback Win Over Sharks

SAN JOSE, CA – David Perron was the catalyst for the Detroit Red Wings in a thrilling 5-3 victory against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Tuesday. Scoring twice in the third period, including the decisive goal with just 1:30 remaining, Perron turned the tide in favor of the Red Wings in a closely contested match.

Perron’s equalizer came on a power play at 10:55 of the third period with a precise one-timer. He then put Detroit ahead with a centering pass that deflected in off Sharks’ Kyle Burroughs’ skate. Michael Rasmussen sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, concluding the game at a 5-3 scoreline.

Daniel Sprong and J.T. Compher also contributed with a goal and an assist each, while Lucas Raymond had a standout performance with three assists. Detroit goalie Alex Lyon made 24 saves, playing a key role in the Red Wings’ (18-16-4) resilience and eventual triumph. The win marks a positive turn for Detroit, who have now won two of their last three games.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but praised their ability to hang in and secure a hard-fought win on the road.

For the Sharks (9-26-3), the game added to a string of disappointments, extending their losing streak to nine games. Despite goals from Fabian Zetterlund, Justin Bailey, and Alexander Barabanov, and two assists from Mario Ferraro, the Sharks fell short. Goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen, who made 26 saves, expressed frustration at the team’s inability to clinch games despite being in competitive positions.

San Jose coach David Quinn recognized improvements in the team’s play but emphasized the importance of turning those improvements into wins.

The Red Wings’ comeback, their sixth third-period rally of the season, ties them for most in the NHL, showcasing their determination and ability to overturn deficits. Lucas Raymond’s contribution, with his eighth multipoint game of the season, was a key factor in Detroit’s offensive success.

The Sharks, facing their second nine-game losing streak of the season, are confronted with challenges reminiscent of their early-season slump. This marks the first time since the 1993-94 season that they’ve experienced such prolonged periods of difficulty.

For Detroit, this victory not only boosts their confidence but also demonstrates their capacity to persevere and succeed in tight situations. The Sharks, on the other hand, will be looking to break their losing streak and translate their efforts into positive results in upcoming games.

Jones’ Shutout and Nylander’s Milestone Propel Maple Leafs to 3-0 Victory Over Kings

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Toronto Maple Leafs snapped their losing streak in impressive fashion with a 3-0 shutout win against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday. Goaltender Martin Jones was pivotal in the victory, making 31 saves to secure his second shutout of the season.

William Nylander led the offensive charge, scoring twice to reach the 50-point milestone this season, a feat that places him among the fastest in Maple Leafs history to do so. Tyler Bertuzzi also played a key role, contributing two assists in a game that saw the Maple Leafs (18-10-7) demonstrate both resilience and tactical acumen.

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe praised his team’s determined effort from the start, highlighting the sense of mission that drove them to victory. The win comes as a much-needed boost for the Maple Leafs, who had been experiencing a rough patch with three consecutive losses.

Cam Talbot, in net for the Kings (20-9-5), made 26 saves but couldn’t prevent the Maple Leafs from finding the back of the net. The Kings, who were shut out for the first time this season, saw their own three-game losing streak extended.

Nylander’s opening goal in the second period set the momentum for Toronto. His one-timer, set up by a combination of Bertuzzi’s forecheck and John Tavares’s feed, showcased the Maple Leafs’ offensive capabilities. Calle Jarnkrok’s goal, also assisted by Bertuzzi, further solidified Toronto’s lead.

Jones’ performance was a standout, with the goalie emphasizing his focus on simplicity and positioning. His effort was crucial in denying the Kings any opportunity to score, including making key saves in the second and third periods.

Nylander’s empty-net goal in the closing moments of the game not only sealed the win but also marked his 50th point of the season in just 35 games. This achievement places him alongside Maple Leafs legends Lorne Carr, Doug Gilmour, and Darryl Sittler in terms of reaching the 50-point mark in fewest games.

The Kings, faced with the challenge of jump-starting their offense, saw coach Todd McLellan reshuffle the top three lines after falling behind. However, the changes were not enough to overcome Toronto’s stronghold on the game.

Notable mentions from the game include Max Domi extending his assist streak to three games and Drew Doughty of the Kings tying Brian Leetch for 10th among defensemen with one franchise in career games played.

This win for the Maple Leafs not only ends their losing streak but also demonstrates their capacity to rebound strongly. For the Kings, the search for answers continues as they aim to snap their own losing skid and regain their earlier season form.

Canucks’ Explosive First Period Fuels 6-3 Win Over Senators

VANCOUVER, BC – The Vancouver Canucks unleashed an offensive barrage in the first period, leading them to a convincing 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Rogers Arena on Tuesday. Elias Pettersson’s two goals, part of a five-goal first period, were instrumental in setting the tone for the Canucks’ win.

Pius Suter also played a significant role, scoring twice and adding an assist, while J.T. Miller contributed with a goal and an assist. Goaltender Thatcher Demko backed up the offensive effort with 35 saves, helping the Canucks (24-10-3) bounce back from a recent loss and continue their strong form of 8-1-2 in their last 11 games.

Vancouver’s head coach Rick Tocchet praised the team’s first-period performance as one of their best in recent times, highlighting the synergy and energy the team displayed.

The Senators (14-19-0), starting a five-game road trip, struggled to match the Canucks’ intensity. Vladimir Tarasenko led Ottawa’s fightback with two goals, and Claude Giroux added a goal and an assist, but their efforts weren’t enough to overturn the early deficit. Goalie Anton Forsberg was replaced by Joonas Korpisalo in the first period after conceding four goals on 13 shots.

Vancouver’s first-period dominance began with Ian Cole’s goal just over two minutes into the game. Suter’s quick thinking and Pettersson’s sharp-angle shot and power-play goal further extended the Canucks’ lead. Miller’s goal, which deflected off Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson, exemplified the fortunate bounces Vancouver capitalized on.

Ottawa’s interim coach Jacques Martin emphasized the need for the team to compete harder and learn from the experience, underlining the importance of consistency and mental toughness in the NHL.

The Senators did attempt a comeback, with Giroux and Tarasenko scoring in the second and third periods, respectively, but the deficit proved too large to overcome. Giroux acknowledged the team’s potential but stressed the need for consistent effort and execution throughout the game.

Suter’s second goal of the night, a long-range chip, closed the game with a 6-3 score, marking a frustrating yet motivating night for the Senators, while bolstering the Canucks’ confidence.

Injuries and streaks were also part of the narrative, with Canucks forward Phillip Di Giuseppe leaving the game early due to a lower-body injury and defenseman Quinn Hughes extending his point streak to five games. Teddy Blueger’s seven-game point streak, however, came to an end.

This victory for the Canucks underlines their offensive capabilities and resilience, while the Senators are left to reflect on their performance and prepare for the remainder of their road trip, with the belief in their potential to turn things around still intact.
