IWGA Interview of the Month: José Perurena, IWGA President

“We have started many important projects”

José Perurena, President of the International World Games Association, looks back over 2023. In the IWGA Interview of the Month, he asserts that the IWGA is emerging from the year stronger than before, with 600 days to go to The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China.

How do you look back on 2023?

José Perurena: Let me put it this way: it was a year of sowing. We will reap the harvest in the future, especially at TWG 2025 in Chengdu. We have started many important projects and assignments this year. It is crucial that we now ‘nurture’ the seed and ‘fertilise’ it regularly in 2024.

What projects do you mean, specifically?

José Perurena: Where should I start? The list is quite long. Perhaps I should go through the projects chronologically. In January, we founded our Athletes’ Committee with Sandra Sanchez as Chair and our ExCo Member Jan Fransoo as her counterpart. In May, our members elected a new Executive Committee; for me, I am very pleased to be able to lead the IWGA through to 2026.

The Sports Programme for the 2025 Games has now been finalized, and we met with the National Olympic Committees and National Olympic Sports Organisations in the autumn. We want to intensify our collaboration in the future, and make them a more important part of The World Games family. In October, we started the hot phase of preparations for the Games with the first Competition Managers’ Meeting.

Okay, that does indeed sound like a very dense programme …

José Perurena: Another thing that should not be underestimated is that we have started strategic partnerships and want to continue them. Sword Venue supports us in planning the competition venues, and Shankai Sports becomes our partner for global sponsorship and marketing for our Games in China. Swiss Timing will once more be our timekeeper. ISB will take over the TV production for the Games in Chengdu and will market the world signal again. At the same time, we are working with ISB on a new streaming platform; we want to bring the Games closer to the fans. Quantum will be responsible for our TWG survey again: this will allow all involved parties, and others who are interested, to follow the independent analysis of the 2025 Games. And I don’t want to forget my friends from FICS; the chiropractors have been with us since 2005 and will offer their service in Chengdu again.

Is there any news about the host for the 2029 Games?

José Perurena: Yes, there is. The city of Karlsruhe in Germany has announced that it will apply for hosting The World Games in 2029. Karlsruhe is a well-known city in the history of the event; back in 1989, the third edition of The World Games took place there. We have learned during our conversations with our counterparts in Karlsruhe that a lot of people still have pleasant memories of the Games held there more than 30 years ago.

You were re-elected as President unopposed. Don’t you see this as a kind of reward for your work in the past?

José Perurena: Quite the opposite. In my application for re-election, I wrote: “Since the Games in 2017, the IWGA has been undergoing a transition period. I’m convinced that we will finish this process with the Games in Chengdu in 2025. I took the responsibility of initiating this transition period when first elected as IWGA President, and consequently I want to finalise this process while still IWGA President.” So there is still a lot to do. What motivates me is that I know I will achieve these goals, with the very strong and capable team that we have.

How do you see the position of The World Games at the end of 2023?

José Perurena: I think we are emerging stronger from the year after the Games in Birmingham 2022, and with just 600 days until the Games in Chengdu. This has to do with our good work and our member federations. But not only that. The IOC and Los Angeles have announced the programme for the 2028 Olympic Games. Four sports that featured in the Birmingham 2022 edition of The World Games will be performing at the Los Angeles Games: Baseball/Softball, Lacrosse, Squash and Flag Football. There is no clear red line between Olympic and non-Olympic sports any more. In Tokyo 2021, four sports from the World Games family made their debut. In Paris 2024, DanceSport will be represented for the first time with Breaking. The World Games have become ‘the’ springboard to the Olympic Games. The reason for this is that we are presenting many new and trendy sports. And not only for this reason, we are now being noticed more and more by the National Olympic Committees and the National Sports Organisations.

That sounds a bit more like harvesting than sowing!

José Perurena: Yes and no. We have worked hard to achieve this position. Our member federations have benefited from this, because participation in The World Games has opened doors for them. We are the showcase for their sports and subsequently for the Olympics too. What is perhaps even more important to me is that our athletes are the winners in this development. They are receiving more and more of the attention they deserve. The recognition and support from the NOCs/NSOs plays a decisive role in this. We owe this positive development to the high quality of the competitions at The World Games. Our event represents the whole diversity of sport, and is thus this kind of showcase. This is both a challenge and a commitment for the Games in Chengdu. Expectations are high.

How high are those expectations?

José Perurena: We all saw during the FISU World University Games this summer how Chengdu can organise a perfect event. Can The World Games be even better? If you talk to the people in Chengdu, then yes. During my visit to the FISU Games, I heard this said again and again.

I think our expectations are rightly high. The Chinese NOC has pledged its support. The Samaranch Foundation is also one of our driving partners. My discussions with the leadership of Sichuan Province and high-ranking officials in Chengdu also confirm my opinion that The World Games 2025 will exceed all expectations.

Another important matter for us is gender equality when it comes to The World Games sports programme. Here, too, we have reached a great result fort he Games in Chengdu. And after we had para sport as part of the competition programme for the first time in 2022, we have been able to expand this area significantly for the Games in Chengdu. What is important for us is that the para competitions are not a separate event. They are included in The World Games edition like any other sport or discipline. This highlights one of our core values: Inclusiveness.

What do you expect in the coming year?

José Perurena: It will hardly be any less challenging. We will make decisive progress on the important tasks that we started this year. We want to sign the Organiser Agreement with the host for TWG 2029 at our AGM. We will anchor the Athletes’ Committee in our constitution.

It is particularly important to me that we establish The World Games Series, as a milestone on the Road to Chengdu. Our federations will continue the qualification process for the upcoming Games, so that by the end of the year, around 90 per cent of participants will have booked their ticket for Chengdu.

The second Competition Managers’ Meeting and a meeting with the NOCs and NSOs in Chengdu are also planned. There are already many dates in my diary.

What else is important to you, looking back through 2023?

José Perurena: It is a good custom to say thank you at the end of the year. My thanks go to my entire Executive Board team: it is fun to discuss and then tackle all tasks constructively and purposefully. A big thank you goes also to our staff team, led by our CEO Joachim Gossow. Our employees are all passionate about their work and are fully committed to The World Games. This does not make life easy for us as a Board and for me as President, but it makes our work much easier. Then I would like to express my appreciation to our member federations. They too are facing challenges in preparing for the Games in Chengdu. They are tackling them with great energy. Everyone knows that we can’t allow ourselves a break, because of the shortened preparation time. At the same time, everyone is convinced that we will manage it.

I am also grateful for the commitment of our existing and new partners. What I realize is that this is more than just business, this is full commitment to an event that they feel a real part of. And finally, I would like to thank our partners in China. Following tradition and observing the cultural rules, I will formulate this in great detail on 10th February 2024. That’s when the new year begins in China. Together, we will make it a very successful Year of the Dragon.

Your wish for 2024?

José Perurena: My strongest wish for the new year is a little less orientated towards sport. I would like to see peace in Ukraine, in Israel and the Gaza Area, and around the world. I am convinced that sport can contribute to peace, but it can only ever be one contribution. The decisive steps towards ending these wars must be taken by those responsible. I very much hope they will.

“Want to replicate Azam Khan’s style in my game,” says Desert Vipers all-rounder Aryan Lakra

Dubai, 22 December 2023: Making an impactful international debut is not a privilege too many cricketers can boast of but Aryan Lakra made his presence felt when he scored 84 on his ODI debut against USA in August, 2022.

The Desert Vipers have acquired the services of all-rounder Aryan Lakra for season 2 of the DP World International League T20 after finishing as runners-up in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The left-arm-spinner-cum-left-hand-batsman who made a humble beginning playing school cricket went on to captain the UAE U16 and U19 squads including the one that participated in the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup, where he played a crucial role in their qualification.

Just as he was to transition into the senior national team, he suffered a setback. “I was supposed to make my debut for the senior team against Ireland in early 2021 but I tested positive for. This delayed my debut by about 16 months but I eventually had the opportunity to make my ODI debut against USA where I did well and 11 days later, I made my T20I debut against Singapore. I also went on to play for UAE in the ICC Men’s T2o World Cup in Australia later that year,” said the 22-year-old Aryan Lakra who has his roots in Haryana, India.

Aryan believes the DP World ILT20 provides a massive platform for young players like him. “Season 1 was a great success and going forward the tournament is only going to get a lot bigger with more superstars coming in. Getting a chance to play alongside them is an opportunity everyone looks for.”

“I think if players like us do well in this tournament and show the world that we are as good as any of the players coming in, it could help us get a chance to be a part of any of the franchise-based leagues that take place around the world,” he said.

Speaking about the upcoming season, Aryan said, “The Desert Vipers were the runners-up last season so this team definitely knows how to go about winning games. I’m really excited and extremely grateful to be a part of the squad this year. It’ll be great to contribute to the team in a way that’ll hopefully help us lift the cup.”

Aryan also looks forward to interacting with all the big names that’ll be a part of the 2024 edition of the tournament scheduled to begin in January. “Our team has the likes of Alex Hales, Colin Munro and Azam Khan so I look forward to sharing the field with them. David Warner, a modern-day legend, is also a part of this tournament and I would love to be able to interact with him,” he said.

“Azam Khan is one of the cleanest strikers of the cricket ball you’ll see and we bat in similar situations so I’d definitely pick his brain on a thing or two and try to replicate his style in my game,” he concluded.

The DP World ILT20 Season 2 will feature Australia’s World Cup hero David Warner, Andre Russell, David Willey, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Alex Hales, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Jordan, Trent Boult, Nicholas Pooran, Chris Woakes and Maheesh Theekshana. More than 100 international and 24 UAE players will feature in the tournament.
The DP World ILT20 will begin on 19th January in Sharjah while the tournament final will be staged at the iconic ‘Ring of Fire’ Dubai International Stadium on Saturday, 17 February.

Historic India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup Clash Set for New York in 2024

New York, USA – The cricket world is abuzz with excitement as the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is set to host an electrifying match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan. This much-anticipated clash will take place in a newly-built stadium on the outskirts of New York, marking a significant milestone in cricket’s expansion to new territories.

The venue for this high-profile match, scheduled for June next year, is a pop-up stadium located in New York, designed to tap into the large cricket-loving expatriate communities in the United States. With an expatriate Indian population of over 711,000 and Pakistani residents up to 100,000 in New York, this venue promises an electric atmosphere for one of cricket’s most intense rivalries.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be hosted jointly by the West Indies and the USA, with the event scheduled to commence in June. This edition is unique as it will be the first time the USA hosts an ICC tournament, which is part of a larger initiative to promote cricket in America ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The tournament will feature 20 teams, divided into four groups of five teams each, making it larger than any previous edition. England will enter the tournament as the defending champions.

The likely dates for the India-Pakistan match are June 8 or 9, 2024, with a preference for June 9 due to the time zone differences between the US and the Indian subcontinent. This timing consideration is crucial for broadcasting the match at a convenient time for viewers in the subcontinent. If the match is scheduled as a night game in New York, it will be broadcast early in the morning in India and Pakistan. The ICC is mindful of this and is likely to schedule India’s matches for morning starts in the USA to cater to the Indian television market.

Hosting the India vs Pakistan match in New York is not just a significant event for cricket fans; it is a strategic move by the ICC to promote the sport in the USA. With three venues in operation for the tournament, including Central Broward Park in Florida and Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas, the addition of the temporary stadium in New York City, with a capacity of 34,000, is a testament to cricket’s growing global appeal.

The upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, especially the India vs Pakistan match in New York, is poised to be a historic event, bringing the excitement of cricket to new audiences and showcasing the sport’s potential for further global expansion. Fans around the world can look forward to a tournament that promises not only high-quality cricket but also a unique experience in the world of sports.

Reigning Champions highlight 2024 World Rowing Versa Challenge participants

Elizabeth Gilmore of the USA and Joel Naukkarinen of Finland will defend their respective titles as Versa Champions, at the 2024 World Rowing Indoor Championships, presented by Concept 2, in Prague, Czechia.

The first-ever winners of the Versa Challenge, the multi-challenge competition format introduced by World Rowing last year in Canada, will look to retain their position as top overall indoor rowers.

Ten men and ten women have qualified in advance to compete in the Versa Challenge in Prague on 23-24 February 2024, at the O2 Universum Hall. Both Naukkarinen and Gilmore finished as top men and women qualifiers for the Versa.

On the men’s side, the competition promises to be fierce with top indoor rowers joining the party this year. Cameron Buchan of Great Britain qualified right behind Naukkarinen and is a force on the erg – so is Andrew Tomlinson of New Zealand, who already won multiple world medals in the discipline. Maciej Zawojski (POL) is a regular among all three rowing disciplines (indoor, classic and coastal) at the elite level, and he and Zach Fowle (USA) will be competing at their second Versa Challenge after finishing respectively third and fourth last year.

On the women’s side, last year’s competition was incredibly close, with Gilmore winning the Versa Challenge by one point ahead of Anna Muehle (GER) and Charlotte Dixon (GBR). Dixon, Muehle, but also Morgan McGrath (USA), Nicola Goss (NZL) and Sarah Pidgen (CAN) will all be looking to avenge last year’s defeat. There will be four newcomers on the Versa stage – and watch out for Lina Bélanger of Canada, who qualified second behind Gilmore.

The Versa was created to offer competitors a unique competition opportunity which cannot be replicated at home, and allows for several race opportunities during one event. Additionally, it features an element of uncertainty and variability which is exciting for both spectators and competitors, and allows indoor rowing competitions to expand beyond more traditional formats.

The Versa will test all the skills and strengths required of indoor rowers, exposing them to new and unfamiliar race formats. Competitors may or may not be informed about the race formats in advance of the WRICH, and should train to be prepared for any challenge. The five events of the Versa Challenge will be interspersed with all the other events over the weekend.

Women’s National Boxing C’ships: RSPB’s Sonia Lather, Tamil Nadu’s S Kalaivani make winning start

Greater Noida, December 22, 2023: The 2016 World Championships silver medallist Sonia Lather of Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) and Tamil Nadu’s S Kalaivani started their campaigns with dominating victories on the opening day of the 7th Elite Women’s National Boxing Championships in Greater Noida.
Sonia started the bout aggressively against Mahi Lama of Madhya Pradesh in the 57kg opening round match before securing a comfortable 5-0 win.
Kalaivani, last edition’s silver medallist, also proved too strong for Milano Mj of Kerala in the 48kg match. Kalaivani’s relentless attack forced the referee to stop the contest in the third round and declare her the winner.
Kalaivani will now square off against Haryana’s Gitika in the next round, who beat Meraj Begum of Telangana by referee stopping the contest in round 1 (RSC) win.
Rinku (52kg) and Tannu (57kg) were the other boxers from Haryana to register victories and progress into the round of 16.
Meanwhile, the 2021 Asian Youth Championships silver medallist Nivedita Karki (48kg) of Uttarakhand dominated Veronica Sohshang of Meghalaya to secure Referee Stopping the Contest (RSC) win in round 2.
The reigning world champion Saweety Boora (81kg), 2022 World Championships bronze medallist Manisha (60kg) and Tokyo Olympian Pooja Rani (75kg) will begin their campaigns on the second day of the prestigious tournament which is organised by the Boxing Federation of India.
The ongoing tournament has been witnessing over 300 boxers competing across 12 weight categories for top honours. The finals will be played on December 27.

NHL: Coyotes Extend Winning Streak with 5-2 Triumph Over Sharks

SAN JOSE – The Arizona Coyotes continued their impressive run with a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center on Thursday, marking their fourth consecutive win. Key performances from Clayton Keller and Alex Kerfoot, who each contributed a goal and two assists, played a pivotal role in the Coyotes’ success.

Nick Schmaltz also had a notable impact with a goal and an assist, while goalie Karel Vejmelka’s 29 saves were crucial for Arizona (17-13-2). The Coyotes have shown remarkable form since their 1-0 win against the Sharks on December 15, with Sean Durzi returning from injury to add two assists. “Winning on the road is essential for our team’s success,” said Arizona coach Andre Tourigny.

The Sharks (9-21-3), despite efforts from Anthony Duclair and Filip Zadina, who both scored, couldn’t halt their losing streak, which has now extended to four games. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves.

San Jose coach David Quinn expressed concern about the team’s approach. “We need to balance our play better, especially when trying to create offensive opportunities,” Quinn said.

The Coyotes took the lead in the second period with Michael Kesselring’s wrist shot, assisted by Keller. Duclair quickly responded for the Sharks, tying the game with a breakaway goal. Keller then restored Arizona’s lead with a skillful backhand shot, and Kerfoot widened the gap with a deflected shot.

“Kerfoot is incredibly versatile and a key part of our team,” Tourigny said, highlighting Kerfoot’s adaptability and contribution.

Zadina’s goal early in the third period brought the Sharks within one, but Schmaltz’s power-play goal and Lawson Crouse’s wrist shot in the final minutes sealed the win for Arizona.

Schmaltz emphasized the importance of capitalizing on power plays. “We’ve practiced and executed our power-play strategy effectively,” he said.

Jan Rutta of the Sharks remained optimistic despite the loss. “We need to focus on our strengths and keep working hard,” Rutta said.

The game was marred by an injury to Sharks forward Givani Smith, who left in the second period with a lower-body injury. Quinn did not provide an update on his condition.

Keller’s performance was a highlight, as he recorded his 22nd career three-point game, surpassing Brian Mullen in franchise history.

For the Coyotes, this victory signifies their growing confidence and cohesion as a team. The Sharks, facing a challenging phase, will look to regroup and address their gameplay to return to winning ways.

NHL: Markstrom Records 200th NHL Win as Flames Blank Ducks 3-0

ANAHEIM – Goalie Jacob Markstrom celebrated his 200th NHL career win with a shutout, leading the Calgary Flames to a 3-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center on Thursday. This achievement marked his 19th NHL shutout and first since March, playing a pivotal role in extending the Flames’ winning streak to three games.

Elias Lindholm was a standout for Calgary (14-14-5), contributing a goal and two assists. Nick DeSimone scored his first NHL goal, helping the team end a four-game road skid. “It was a complete team effort tonight,” Markstrom said, praising his team’s penalty kill and defensive plays.

Lukas Dostal made 41 saves for the Ducks (12-20-0), who couldn’t sustain the momentum from their previous two wins. Anaheim coach Greg Cronin criticized the team’s performance, citing poor execution and mistakes. “We struggled with basic plays, which cost us the game,” Cronin said.

The Ducks faced a setback when rookie forward Leo Carlsson, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, was injured after a collision with Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. The extent of Carlsson’s injury was a concern for the team.

Calgary opened the scoring early in the first period with DeSimone’s one-timer, assisted by Connor Zary. “I just needed to be ready for Zary’s pass, and it worked out perfectly,” DeSimone said.

Lindholm’s second-period power-play goal extended the Flames’ lead, showcasing their control over the game. “We managed to dictate the pace after the first period,” Lindholm noted.

A.J. Greer’s empty-net goal in the third period sealed the win for Calgary, underscoring the Ducks’ challenges in puck battles and defense.

The game also saw notable achievements and records. DeSimone became the fourth-oldest Flames player to score his first NHL goal and the oldest since Pavel Torgayev in 1995. Lindholm became the first Calgary player with multiple power-play goals this season.

The Flames’ recent dominance over the Ducks was evident, with a 9-1-1 record in their last 11 meetings. Markstrom, drafted in 2008, joined an elite group of Swedish goalies with 200 NHL wins and is the second goalie from his draft class to reach this milestone.

For the Ducks, the game added to their struggles, as they were penalized for too many men on the ice, reflecting ongoing issues with bench minors this season. Dostal’s performance, despite the loss, was notable as he faced seven Calgary power plays.

For Calgary, the win is a boost to their confidence and momentum as they aim to climb higher in the standings. The Ducks, meanwhile, will look to regroup and address their execution issues in upcoming games.

NBA: Kuzma’s 32 Points Propel Wizards to Thrilling 118-117 Win Over Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Washington Wizards edged out a nail-biting 118-117 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night, marking their fifth win of the season. Kyle Kuzma’s stellar performance, scoring 32 points, was pivotal in securing the win for Washington, now standing at 5-22.

Tyus Jones contributed significantly with 16 points, while Daniel Gafford added 14 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Poole and Deni Advija each chipped in with 11 points. Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. praised the team’s mental and physical resilience, underscoring the importance of the win regardless of the circumstances.

Portland’s Anfernee Simons was outstanding, particularly in the fourth quarter, where he scored 22 of his total 41 points. Deandre Ayton had a strong double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Jerami Grant added 20 points. However, Grant’s potential game-winning driving layup missed at the buzzer, resulting in the Trail Blazers’ record dropping to 7-20.

The game began with the Wizards establishing an early lead, opening with an 8-0 run and forcing Portland into three turnovers within the first 90 seconds. Portland struggled with ball control throughout the game, resulting in 15 turnovers that led to 21 points for Washington.

Portland coach Chauncey Billups expressed disappointment with the team’s start, acknowledging the difficulty in matching up with Washington’s fast-paced style.

The Wizards managed to build an 18-point lead in the second half, but a determined rally led by Simons brought Portland back into the game, tying the score. Washington, however, regained the lead and managed to hold onto it in the tense final moments. The Trail Blazers had a chance to snatch the victory in the closing seconds following a successful challenge that overturned a foul on Matisse Thybulle, but Grant’s layup attempt at the buzzer failed to connect.

Looking ahead, the Wizards will face a tough challenge against Golden State on Friday night, while the Trail Blazers have a chance to redeem themselves in their matchup with Golden State on Saturday night.

NBA: Wolves Overpower Lakers 118-111, Edwards Leads Charge in High-Stakes Matchup

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Timberwolves, spearheaded by Anthony Edwards’ 27 points, clinched a hard-fought 118-111 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday. The win was especially notable as it handed the LeBron James-less Lakers their fourth consecutive loss and tied the Wolves with Boston for the NBA’s best record at 21-6.

Despite playing on consecutive nights, the Timberwolves showcased resilience and depth. Coach Chris Finch praised his team’s effort, acknowledging the challenges of back-to-back games and the close nature of the contest.

Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 21 points for Minnesota before exiting with a lower-leg injury. His condition remains uncertain, with Finch mentioning Towns took a “bang” but had no further updates. Despite a sluggish third quarter, the Wolves managed to regain momentum, largely thanks to the efforts of Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert. Conley finished with 16 points and eight assists, while Gobert added a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, along with three blocks.

The Lakers, missing LeBron James due to tendinitis in his ankle, struggled to find their rhythm. Anthony Davis led Los Angeles with 31 points and eight rebounds, battling against Minnesota’s formidable frontcourt. Rui Hachimura, starting in James’ absence, scored 18 points. The loss further deepens the Lakers’ slump, dropping them to 15-14 overall and 5-11 on the road.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham expressed optimism about the team’s future, emphasizing the need for players to return to full health and find their rhythm.

Austin Reaves provided a significant boost off the bench for the Lakers with 18 points, and Taurean Prince, a former Timberwolf, was perfect from beyond the arc, hitting all four of his three-point attempts. D’Angelo Russell, facing his old team, scored 17 points and had eight assists but was critical of the Lakers’ lack of continuity.

The Timberwolves’ defense, the best in the league in terms of points allowed per game, was a crucial factor in their victory. Conley highlighted the importance of their defensive prowess, describing it as the team’s hallmark.

Looking ahead, the Lakers face a challenging matchup against Oklahoma City on Saturday, while the Timberwolves will travel to Sacramento for their next game.

Hockey: Three weeks to go: Final touches underway for the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024

New Delhi, 22nd December 2023: With only three weeks until the FIH Hockey Olympics Qualifiers Ranchi 2024, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is preparing to compete in Ranchi, aiming to secure a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“We have some high-calibre teams coming to Ranchi to battle for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics, but we have a great group of players and an outstanding support staff. So, we are certain that we can finish on the podium and qualify for the Olympics. The aim will be to play each match on our terms, take more responsibility for our actions in-game, be solid at the back, and capitalize on the chances we create,” commented Indian Women’s Hockey Team Chief Coach Janneke Schopman on India’s chances in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024.

India will begin the campaign against the United States on 13th January and go on to face New Zealand on 14th January, before their last Pool B clash against Italy on 16th January. The Pool A comprises Germany, Japan, Chile, Czech Republic.

The team is entering this tournament after playing preparatory matches in Spain. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team won the Gold medal at the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023 and the Bronze medal at the 19th Asian Games, both times defeating Japan. The team is optimistic about the upcoming tour, buoyed by the enthusiastic support of home fans. The team’s main goal is to finish in the top three and secure a spot in the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Elaborating on the preparations, Janneke Schopman said, “The last few months were crucial, and I am happy with the way the team has responded after missing out on direct qualification from the Asian Games. Our performance in the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023 is an example of the team’s potential. The next step is to tap into this potential and become a consistently high-performing team. The 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023 was important in this regard, as it helped us fine-tune our game and maintain match sharpness before entering a critical juncture in our journey to the Paris 2024 Olympics.”

FIFA: USD 2.8 billion made available to fund football development worldwide

FIFA made approximatively USD 2.8 billion available to the 211 FIFA Member Associations (MAs), the six confederations, and the various zonal or regional associations, and funded more than 1,600 specific projects with a long-term impact on football development during the first seven years of FIFA Forward, according to the global report into the programme.

Established in 2016 after Gianni Infantino took office as FIFA President, and with the express aim of giving everyone around the world the chance to play football, the FIFA Forward programme has made a significant contribution to football development activities since its launch.

“We pledged that revenues generated by football would be used for the benefit of our sport all around the world, for girls and boys, women and men, and we were as good as our word,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “Investment in football is both our responsibility and our obligation, and through FIFA Forward we have the structure to do that in a viable and transparent way. The outcome has been a sevenfold increase in investment since 2016 – during a spell in which FIFA’s revenues have not even doubled. This shows that funding is not only being delivered correctly, but it is being monitored and implemented to ensure the sustainable development of football for the long term.”

The report outlines that 80% of the investment across FIFA Forward 1.0 and 2.0 from 2016 to 2022 – more than USD 2.24 billion – was made directly to MAs both to make an essential contribution to the operations of football development activities and to enable investment in specific projects with a long-term impact on football development.

It breaks down the investments between 2016 to 2022 into eight categories. Administration and Governance used USD 448.8 million as the biggest investment area across the 211 MAs, closely followed by Infrastructure (USD 415.2 million). National Teams (USD 357.5 million), Competitions (USD 186.1 million), and Equipment and Others (USD 181.1 million) saw significant funds dedicated to them, as did Women’s Football (USD 110.9 million) and Capacity Development (USD 86.8 million). Football operating expenses and unused funds (USD 135.6 million) accounted for the remainder of the global sum.

The funds invested resulted in no fewer than 577 new pitches being laid and 208 new competitions established, directly providing more than 300,000 women and men around the world with new opportunities to play the game they love.

“Through the Forward Programme, FIFA works every day with every single member association to develop football and this continuous activity at every level is what underpins the success of our sport and the impact that we are seeing through Forward will help to safeguard this success for future generations,” added FIFA Secretary General ad interim Mattias Grafström.

From 2023, FIFA Forward 3.0 promises to deliver more improvements than ever before with each MA eligible to receive up to USD 8 million per four-year cycle, with additional funding available for confederations and zonal or regional associations. As per previous iterations of the programme, FIFA also provides specialised, locally based know-how, and ensures compliance with its enhanced oversight controls to maximise the benefit of all funding.

NBA: Bulls Dominate Spurs 114-95, Wembanyama’s Struggles Overshadowed by NHL-NBA Crossover

CHICAGO — The Chicago Bulls secured a comfortable 114-95 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night, overshadowing Victor Wembanyama’s difficult night for the Spurs. Wembanyama, the NBA’s No. 1 draft pick, had a memorable pre-game experience meeting NHL’s top pick Connor Bedard, but his on-court performance left something to be desired.

Coby White was the star for the Bulls, scoring 22 points, including a crucial 12 in the fourth quarter to help Chicago pull away. The Bulls’ win, their eighth in 11 games, came despite the absence of Zach LaVine due to a foot injury.

Wembanyama, a 7-foot-3 French prodigy, had a challenging game, finishing with a season-low seven points and five rebounds. This performance ended his record-setting streak of eight consecutive double-doubles for a teenager. He struggled from the field, making only 3 of 8 shots and failing to score in the first half. Wembanyama, who missed the previous game due to a sore ankle, insisted postgame that his ankle was fine.

The Bulls’ victory was a team effort, with DeMar DeRozan contributing 21 points, Patrick Williams adding 18, and Nikola Vucevic chipping in with 16. Chicago’s resilience and team spirit were key factors in their victory, as noted by White.

San Antonio’s Devin Vassell led his team with 21 points, but the Spurs couldn’t halt their losing skid, dropping their third consecutive game since breaking an 18-game losing streak. The Spurs struggled to find rhythm, which was evident in their overall performance.

The Bulls’ 3-point shooting was a mixed bag, hitting just 7 of 28 attempts. However, they found their range in the crucial fourth quarter, sinking 5 of 6 from deep. White’s two 3-pointers in the quarter, including one that stretched the lead to 15, were pivotal in sealing the game.

Off the court, Bulls coach Billy Donovan provided an update on LaVine’s injury status, indicating that he will increase his activities next week. The team is optimistic about his recovery and will monitor how he responds to more strenuous exercises.

Additionally, Bulls forward Torrey Craig expressed hope of returning sooner than the initially projected two-month recovery period from his right foot injury, citing positive progress in his rehabilitation.

Looking ahead, the Spurs will try to regroup as they face Dallas on Saturday night, while the Bulls host Cleveland in their next matchup.

NBA: Morant Powers Grizzlies to 116-103 Win Over Pacers in Triumphant Home Return

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Ja Morant marked his return to the FedExForum with an impressive 20 points and eight assists, leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a convincing 116-103 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night. This game marked Morant’s first home appearance after a 25-game suspension and he did not disappoint the home crowd.

Desmond Bane was the top scorer for Memphis, pouring in 31 points along with seven assists. Jaren Jackson Jr. contributed significantly with 21 points and seven rebounds. Bane’s shooting was particularly effective, making 11 of 26 field goals and hitting 5 out of 12 from beyond the arc. Morant, on his part, shot a solid 7 of 15 from the field. This game marked the second consecutive victory where all three players scored at least 20 points.

Morant acknowledged the strength that Bane and Jackson bring to the team, highlighting their scoring ability and how it enhances the Grizzlies’ offense. Coach Taylor Jenkins echoed this sentiment, pointing out the team’s strong record when these players hit the 20-point mark.

The Grizzlies were still buoyed by Morant’s performance in New Orleans on Tuesday, where he scored 34 points, including a game-winning layup. His return to the team after the suspension – issued for his actions on social media – has been a significant boost.

Indiana’s effort was led by Obi Toppin with 22 points. Tyrese Haliburton added 17 points and 14 assists, while Buddy Hield and Myles Turner each contributed 15 points. Despite the loss, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle praised his team’s continuous competition and poise.

Memphis, which had led 86-77 entering the third quarter, expanded their lead to 17 points midway through the fourth and comfortably secured their second straight win. Notably, it was only the Grizzlies’ second home win of the season, contrasting their excellent home record last season.

The Pacers, coming off a high-scoring win in Charlotte, found the game against Memphis challenging, with Carlisle attributing the loss partly to missed shots and miscues.

Memphis showcased a rejuvenated spirit with Morant’s return, evident in their first-half performance where they shot 60% from the field and 50% from three-point range, at one point leading by 22 points. However, Indiana mounted a significant comeback, cutting the deficit to just two points by halftime.

The Pacers momentarily erased the Grizzlies’ lead early in the third quarter, but Memphis responded decisively to reclaim control of the game. The Grizzlies’ improved ball movement, resulting in 27 assists, was a key factor in their victory.

Coach Jenkins emphasized the importance of maintaining their style of play, which he described as “Grizzlies basketball,” for the entire game.

Looking ahead, the Pacers will host Orlando on Friday night, while the Grizzlies travel to face Atlanta in their next matchup.

NBA: Bucks Extend Home Streak with 118-114 Win Over Magic, Antetokounmpo Shines

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Bucks, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s dominant performance, secured their sixth straight win by defeating the Orlando Magic 118-114 on Thursday night at the Fiserv Forum. This victory marked their longest single-season home winning streak since the 1991-92 season, highlighting a remarkable period of success on their home court.

Antetokounmpo, the cornerstone of the Bucks’ success, tallied an impressive 37 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Damian Lillard complemented Antetokounmpo’s efforts with 24 points and eight assists, acknowledging the team’s upward trend and their improving defense and offense.

As the Bucks prepare to embark on a four-game road trip, starting in New York on Saturday, Antetokounmpo reflected on the team’s enjoyment of their time at home, emphasizing how winning has positively impacted their practices and time spent together.

Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez each added 14 points, contributing to Milwaukee’s balanced attack.

The Magic, despite a strong effort, fell short, extending their losing streak to four games. Franz Wagner led Orlando with 29 points, followed by Paolo Banchero with 23 and Moe Wagner with 21. Cole Anthony added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Magic coach Jamahl Mosley praised his team’s hard play and poise, acknowledging the challenge of facing the Bucks’ star players in crucial moments.

Orlando dominated in the paint with a 60-40 edge but struggled from beyond the arc, continuing a slump in their long-range shooting. This weakness was evident as they only converted 8 of their 33 three-point attempts.

The Bucks initially surged ahead with Antetokounmpo’s early onslaught, building an 11-2 lead. Orlando, however, rallied back, cutting Milwaukee’s lead to just two points in the final quarter on a three-pointer by Franz Wagner.

Following Orlando’s comeback, the Bucks responded with a critical 9-2 run, initiated by Lopez off an assist from Malik Beasley. Despite the Magic reducing the deficit to five in the last two minutes, they couldn’t bridge the gap, with Gary Harris hitting a late three-pointer to bring the final score closer.

Orlando was handicapped by the absence of Jalen Suggs and Joe Ingles due to injuries.

Looking forward, the Magic will face Indiana on Saturday night, while the Bucks take their winning momentum to New York.
