Indian Women’s Hockey Team goes down 1-3 to Germany in 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023

Valencia, 19th December 2023: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Germany on Tuesday in the 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023. Captain Nike Lorez (11’), Hanna Carina Granitzki (23’), and Charlotte Stapenhorst (52’) led the charge for Germany, scoring a goal each. Meanwhile, Nikki Pradhan (34′) was the lone goal-scorer for India.

Germany took the game by the scruff of the neck in the first quarter. Captain Nike Lorez slotted the ball past Bichu Devi Kharibam to put Germany in the driving seat early on.

Hanna Carina Granitzki doubled the lead for Germany in the second quarter through a penalty corner goal and presented India with a mountain to climb.

After the halftime break, a reinvigorated Indian side sought to threaten the German goal. As the pressure continued to mount on the Germans, it was Nikki Pradhan, who powered a shot into goal from a penalty corner and presented India with a foothold in the contest.

However, the momentum shifted back in Germany’s favour as Charlotte Stapenhorst’s goal in the last quarter restored their two-goal lead and sealed the victory for her team.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will face Ireland in their last match at 20:00 on 21st December.

PKL 10: Haryana Steelers earn gritty win over Gujarat Giants, extend unbeaten run to four games

PUNE, 19th December, 2023: Haryana Steelers put up a splendid all-around display to earn a gritty 31-29 victory over Gujarat Giants in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 match at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex on Tuesday. In the process, the Steelers became the first team in season 10 to register four successive wins.

The Steelers got off the blocks well and quickly climbed to a 5-1 lead as the Giants fought back through a Fazel Atrachali SUPER TACKLE and a clever toe touch from Rohit Gulia. The two teams remained neck and neck for most of the opening half and the Steelers took a sizable lead when Mohit Nandal pinned Parteek Dahiya and brought up his High 5.

There was more trouble in store for the Giants as Vinay got the all-important ALL OUT in the 19th minute and the Steelers went into the interval leading 17-10. The Giants managed only 5 raid points in the first half, while the Steelers’ right cover Mohit single-handedly picked up 5 tackle points.

Giants coach Ram Mehar Singh’s half-time chat seemed to have made the difference as his men came out all guns blazing in the second half. Rohit produced an incredible SUPER RAID to reduce the Giants’ deficit to 4 points at 15-19 and a superb tackle from Mohammad Nabibakhsh saw the men in orange bag the ALL OUT and inch closer. The Giants scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, compared to the Steelers’ 3.

Sonu Jaglan came off the bench and got the Giants on level terms with a massive back-kick to make it 24-24 with seven minutes left on the clock. It was still anybody’s game, but the Steelers handled the pressure situations better to grab the win.

Ashish, who had a quiet evening, got his first point when it mattered the most as he trapped Sonu in an ankle hold with exactly 60 seconds left on the clock and Vinay followed it up with a solid two-point raid to extend the Steelers’ unbeaten streak.

UP Yoddhas Assistant Coach Upendra Malik discloses why Surender, not Pardeep Narwal, was UP Yoddhas’ main raider

Pune, 19th December 2023: In a twist of the tale, the UP Yoddhas put their money on Surender Gill and not the ever-reliant Pardeep Narwal to seal a hard-fought draw against the Bengal Warriors on Monday. The raider bagged an impressive 18 points, including 13 touch points, as his side secured an important win to stay in the race for the playoffs.

Speaking to the media post the match, UP Yoddhas assistant coach Upendra Malik revealed the thought process behind fielding a confident Gill ahead of Narwal, who managed two points across nine raids for his team. “It depends on the match strategies because when we felt that Surender Gill could perform well, we gave him more raiding opportunities.

“In the initial raids by Pardeep, the opposing team had 4 or 5 players on the mat, but Pardeep does well against 6 or 7 players. Since Bengal’s left defence was strong today, we gave Gill more chances to face them,” he further added.

After losing momentum in the second half of the match, the Yoddhas fought back in the final few raids to take the match to a tie, a result that was favourable for the side who were looking to improve on their fourth-place finish from season 9. “We should have won this match, but it ended in a tie. If there had been 2 seconds more on the clock for the final raid, the match would have been unfavourable for us. Therefore, we are happy to draw the match and take 3 points.”

Preview for the match on Wednesday:

The Jaipur Pink Panthers narrowly beat out the Patna Pirates in their last match and will be hoping to secure a big win to improve their score difference of -2. All eyes will be on Arjun Deshwal, whose raid percentage of 63% will be key in ending their inconsistent form in PKL 10. Meanwhile, the Yoddhas will be riding high after their tie against the Bengal Warriors, and apart from Pardeep Narwal, the focus will increase of Surender Gill after his brilliant outing.

In the other game of the night, the home side Puneri Paltan will need to win to take a substantial lead at the top of the points table. Led ably by skipper Aslam Inamdar, he will be key against the Bengaluru Bulls, who finally ended their four-match losing streak with the victory over the Jaipur Pink Panthers in their last match. Currently in the bottom half of the points table, the onus will be on Vishal Kandola and Bharat to lift their team back up.

Please find below the schedule for PKL Season 10 matches on Wednesday

For CP quadriplegic Jeetu Kanwar why nothing is impossible

19th December New Delhi: Every athlete in the just-concluded Khelo India Para Games in Delhi was unique. Their ability to rise above physical and mental challenges exposed their God-gifted special qualities that able-bodied sportspersons can never fathom. Jeetu Kanwar is perhaps extra special. Her life story is simply surreal and just unbelievable.

“She has seen a very difficult phase early in life and that has made her a very strong woman today. She has faced all the challenges all by herself and today, she is a self-made woman and an inspiration to the society,” said Kavita Suresh, the general secretary of the Cerebral Palsy Sports Federation of India (CPSFI).
A spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy patient, Jeetu Kanwar, now 29, has been facing life’s odds ever since she was in her mother’s womb. Her form of spastic CP is the severest and it affects the movement of all four limbs, the trunk and the face.

Jeetu’s grit and determination was seen at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium last week when she sprinted to the 100m bronze medal in T-35 class. Now she wants to win a medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Jeetu Kanwar was born on June 26, 1994 in a humble family in Khudiyala dhani under Shergarh block of Jodhpur district. The first signs of cerebral palsy were discovered within three hours of Jeetu’s birth after she didn’t cry even once in the entire period.

Her father Ladu Singh, a senior nursing officer at Primary Health Centre, Nathrau, was as clueless as her mother Rukam Kanwar. Lack of adequate oxygen in Jeetu’s developing brain during her mother’s pregnancy resulted in problems with all her limb and muscle movements.

“My parents were not well educated. Moneywise also we weren’t very strong. My parents and grandparents visited hospitals in Jodhpur but there weren’t facilities to treat cerebral palsy. They also went to all sacred places in and around Rajasthan to seek divine intervention but nothing helped,” Jeetu said.

Being the first among five siblings, Jeetu took three years to start walking. When her younger sister Nenu walked in a year’s time, neighbours and the larger family started to look down upon her. The Kanwars were also discriminated because their first kids were both daughters!

Stunted growth and problems with all body part movements made her life miserable. However, Jeetu wasn’t the one to become depressed but resolved to fight back. When she was put in the local government school, kids tormented Jeetu. Life was a nightmare.

To be able to focus on studies, Jeetu changed many primary schools before she was sent to a school meant for persons with physical disabilities 20 kilometres outside Jodhpur. Jeetu excelled by emerging topper in each class from 6 to 12 at the Sucheta Kripalani Shiksha Niketan, established by then Rajya Sabha MP Narayan Singh Manaklao.

“It was a different world altogether. What is easy for a normal person, it was a huge struggle for me. Tying shoe laces, brushing one’s teeth, taking a bath, changing clothes and holding a pen or even writing down class notes or exams used to be very difficult. But the challenge only made me stronger. I resolved not to give up,” she explained.

Jeetu received the Indira Priyadarshini Award from Rajasthan Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari in 2010 for being the topper in the state among cerebral palsy kids. This came as a huge motivation and her interest in academics grew. A scholarship from a US-based NGO Polio Children followed only helping Jeetu pursue higher education.

Jeetu got admission in BA Pass course in Kamala Nehru College under Jai Narain Vyas University in Jodhpur. Since it was a college for general students, she had to face discrimination and humiliation at the hands of her classmates once again. Still, she graduated with flying colours in 2013.

“I used to struggle asking questions in the class and everyone used to make fun of me. Asking the professor to repeat something also became a big task. I did not have the money to afford speech therapy. I didn’t have any friends who could help me with notes or projects. So, I would get tired after studying, making notes till late nights at the hostel,” she said.

Jeetu secured a Master’s degree in Public Policy, Law & Governance from Central University of Rajasthan, Ajmer. It was altogether a new challenge to shift to a new city but her determination helped her earn a gold medal in the subject in 2015, which was awarded to her by former ISRO chairman and vice-chancellor K. Kasturirangan during the University’s convocation.

“It was the first time I invited my parents to come and witness my achievement. I had never called them for any prizes or awards I won before this. My parents were super happy, kept applauding me even after I got down from the stage. Tears of joy trickled down their cheeks as they shared their pride about their disabled daughter. That is the most cherished moment of my life,” Jeetu recalled.

Jeetu is now a research scholar at Jawahar Lal Nehru University in Delhi pursuing a PhD in Public Health at the Centre of Social Medicine & Community Health in JNU.

Repeated problems with her mobility forced Jeetu to consult doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). And thus began her sporting career in 2015-2016.

“I was unable to walk even 400 m from hostel to classroom at JNU. That’s when I consulted someone at AIIMS. The doctor told me to immediately start physiotherapy and get into physical activity for at least 2-3 hours daily. Semi-Automated Offside Technology to debut at AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023

Match officials at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ will be able to enhance their decision-making process with the Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) system, which will be implemented at all 51 matches of the tournament.

This marks the first time that SAOT will be in place at an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competition and makes the AFC the first Confederation in world football to apply the system at the Continental Men’s national team level, which further underscores the AFC’s commitment towards improving accuracy and integrity of decision-making by its match officials.

The introduction of SAOT at Asia’s crown jewel, to be played between 12 January and 10 February, 2024 in Qatar, complements the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which will make its full debut following its successful implementation from the Quarter-final stage during the 2019 edition in the United Arab Emirates.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “Our Asian match officials are established as among the best in the world and the landmark debut of the Semi-Automated Offside Technology will only serve to drive them to set higher standards.

“The AFC is determined to continue to be leaders in world refereeing and by embracing the latest technological innovations, along with the full implementation of the Video Assistant Referee system at Asia’s crown jewel, it reinforces the AFC’s Vision of providing the ultimate stage for our players, teams and record cast of match officials to shine.”

The SAOT system has undergone extensive testing, in line with protocols and guidelines issued by FIFA and approved by the IFAB, leading up to its implementation at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™.

It utilises 12 specialised cameras, which are strategically placed to track the exact position of the ball and players on the field of play. In particular, the position of the limbs, as well as all the other body parts that are relevant for offside decisions, can be established.

This technology facilitates accurate and rapid position checks, utilising artificial intelligence. When a player, who is perceived to be offside, receives the ball, an alert will be sent to the VAR, who is able to then check the position immediately from the offside lines drawn automatically by the technology. In every such instance, the final decision will require validation from the VAR before the on-field referee is informed. The final decision on the field of play will always be made by the referee.

Once the decision-making process has been completed, the same data points that were used to determine a player’s position will be generated into a 3D animation that will be shown on the giant screens at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ stadiums and will also be provided to TV broadcasters, which ensures transparent insight for fans.

NBA: Brunson Leads Knicks to 114-109 Win Over Lakers Despite LeBron’s Triple-Double

LOS ANGELES — The New York Knicks, spearheaded by Jalen Brunson’s late-game heroics, secured a 114-109 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. Brunson’s 29 points, including 11 crucial points in the fourth quarter, were key in overcoming LeBron James’ 109th career triple-double.

Julius Randle contributed significantly with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Immanuel Quickley added 20 points. The Knicks demonstrated resilience in the final quarter, holding off a Lakers rally led by James to notch their second road win over Los Angeles in 2023.

LeBron James, despite recording a triple-double with 25 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds, couldn’t steer the Lakers to victory. They have now lost three of their last four games, following their triumph in the inaugural In-Season Tournament. Anthony Davis added 32 points and 14 rebounds, but Los Angeles struggled to capitalize on key opportunities in the closing stages.

In the game’s critical moments, James scored consecutive baskets to cut the Knicks’ lead to four points. However, Randle’s timely three-pointer and a subsequent dunk following a missed three-pointer by James ensured the Knicks maintained their lead.

James’ achievement of his second triple-double of the season and being the only player with a triple-double in his 21st NBA season remains a highlight for the Lakers. Austin Reaves also stood out with 20 points, and the team welcomed back Davis, D’Angelo Russell, and Cam Reddish from injuries.

For the Knicks, Randle’s strong first-half performance and Brunson’s three 3-pointers underscored their determination to bounce back from a recent loss to the Clippers.

Before the game, the Lakers celebrated their In-Season Tournament victory with the unveiling of a banner at their arena. This modest black banner, recognizing their unbeaten run and victory over Indiana, was placed next to the Minneapolis Lakers championship banners in a less prominent position compared to Los Angeles’ gold title banners.

Looking ahead, the Knicks face a matchup against Brooklyn on Wednesday, while the Lakers will travel to play against Chicago on the same day.

NBA: Poole and Wizards Look to Rebound Against Kings After Loss in Phoenix

Jordan Poole and the Washington Wizards continue their West Coast trip, facing the Sacramento Kings in Sacramento on Monday night. This game marks the second stop for the Wizards, following a narrow 112-108 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Poole, returning to his old Pacific Division stomping grounds where he played with the Golden State Warriors, had a tough outing against Phoenix, contributing just 14 points. His shooting struggles were evident, with a 5-for-17 performance from the field and only 2-for-9 from beyond the arc. The Wizards, who had a strong first half and led by as much as 16 points, were ultimately undone by a 31-19 Suns surge in the fourth quarter.

Kings fans have vivid memories of Poole from his time with the Warriors, especially his performances in Golden State’s seven-game playoff series victory over Sacramento. Poole had notable contributions in that series, including a 22-point game that helped even the series at 2-2.

Aside from Poole, Kyle Kuzma of the Wizards also struggled with his shooting in Phoenix, managing only 17 points on a 7-for-22 shooting night. Washington’s overall three-point shooting was lackluster, hitting just 30.4 percent from distance.

Despite the loss, Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. saw positives in the team’s play and is looking to build on the momentum from their recent 137-123 victory over the Indiana Pacers. In that game, Poole and Kuzma had significantly better shooting performances.

The Kings, meanwhile, are coming off a day of rest following their impressive 125-104 win over the Utah Jazz. Sacramento’s Keegan Murray starred in that game, setting a franchise record with 12 three-pointers and notching a career-high 47 points.

Kings coach Mike Brown praised the team’s collective effort and assist count, emphasizing their strong bond and teamwork. The Kings have had a successful start to their six-game homestand with two victories.

De’Aaron Fox, who missed the last game due to an irritated right shoulder, might return for the matchup against the Wizards. His absence was not deemed serious.

The Kings have faced Golden State three times this season, with the Warriors holding a 2-1 advantage in those meetings.

Both the Wizards and Kings will look to capitalize on their recent experiences as they face off in what promises to be an intriguing contest.

UP NEXT

Wizards: Continue their West Coast trip against the Sacramento Kings.

Kings: Host the Washington Wizards in the third game of their six-game homestand.

NBA: Murray and Gordon Propel Nuggets to Commanding 130-104 Win Over Mavericks

DENVER — The Denver Nuggets, led by Jamal Murray’s 22 points and Aaron Gordon’s season-high tying 21 points, convincingly defeated the Dallas Mavericks 130-104 on Monday night. The Nuggets’ victory was a strong response to their recent home loss to Oklahoma City, showcasing their depth and offensive firepower.

Murray, who has been dealing with hamstring and ankle injuries this season, showed signs of regaining his shooting form, going a perfect 4 for 4 from the 3-point range. His performance was pivotal in Denver’s third-quarter surge, where he scored 10 points during a 21-10 run that helped the Nuggets pull away from the Mavericks.

Nikola Jokic contributed eight points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, allowing Denver’s starters to rest during the fourth quarter. A notable aspect of the game was the Nuggets’ bench outscoring the Mavericks’ reserves 62-34.

Luka Doncic tried to keep Dallas in the game, scoring 22 of his 38 points in the second quarter and finishing with 11 rebounds. However, his efforts were not enough to overcome the absence of key players like Kyrie Irving, Josh Green, Maxi Kleber, and Dereck Lively II due to injuries.

Tim Hardaway Jr. made a personal achievement, surpassing his father, Tim Hardaway Sr., on the league’s career 3-pointers list. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, returning from concussion protocol, contributed nine points and played a crucial role in cooling off Doncic in the second half.

An intriguing subplot of the game was the presence of Jokic and Markieff Morris on the court together for the first time since their altercation in November 2021. Their previous encounter had led to Jokic’s one-game suspension and Morris missing four months due to whiplash.

The win marks a positive momentum shift for the Nuggets as they look to maintain their form in upcoming games.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks will host the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, while the Nuggets start a three-game trip, beginning in Toronto on the same day.

NBA: Sexton and Horton-Tucker Lead Jazz to Decisive 125-108 Win Over Nets

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz, propelled by outstanding performances from Collin Sexton and Talen Horton-Tucker, triumphed over the Brooklyn Nets with a convincing 125-108 victory on Monday night. Both Sexton and Horton-Tucker scored 27 points each, guiding the Jazz to their third win in four games.

Sexton continued his scoring streak, posting his fifth consecutive 20-point game. Horton-Tucker, in addition to his scoring prowess, also contributed a team-high six assists. The Jazz were further bolstered by Lauri Markkanen’s double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Walker Kessler’s notable presence in the paint with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks.

For the Nets, Cam Thomas led the scoring with 32 points, while Spencer Dinwiddie added a well-rounded performance of 17 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds. This loss ended Brooklyn’s three-game winning streak against Utah.

The game remained closely contested throughout, with Brooklyn not trailing in the second quarter and maintaining a lead for much of the third. However, the Nets struggled to create a significant lead, never extending beyond a seven-point advantage.

Utah’s pivotal moment came late in the third quarter with a 15-2 run, which shifted the momentum in their favor, leading to an 88-80 advantage. This surge was fueled by Sexton, John Collins, and Markkanen, who hit crucial 3-pointers on successive possessions.

The Nets attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 108-101 following consecutive three-pointers by Thomas. Nevertheless, the Jazz’s resilience was evident as they scored on five straight possessions, effectively halting Brooklyn’s rally. Horton-Tucker played a key role, scoring consecutive baskets and assisting Kessler for an alley-oop dunk.

Kessler’s dunk initiated a decisive 12-0 run for Utah, extending their lead to 120-101 with just over two minutes remaining. The Jazz’s sharpshooting, especially in the second half where they shot 10-of-16 from beyond the arc, was a significant factor in their victory.

Looking forward, the Nets will face a challenge against the Knicks on Wednesday, while the Jazz are set to take on the Cavaliers the same day.

NBA: Gilgeous-Alexander’s 30 Points Lead Thunder Past Grizzlies 116-97, Morant Set for Return

OKLAHOMA CITY — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive 30-point performance guided the Oklahoma City Thunder to a dominant 116-97 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. The win came just before the Grizzlies anticipate the return of their star point guard, Ja Morant, from suspension.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who also grabbed nine rebounds, continued his stellar form, playing a significant role in keeping Oklahoma City in second place in the Western Conference standings. His effort came on the heels of a game-winner against Denver and included making 13 of 14 free throws.

For the Grizzlies, who suffered their fifth consecutive loss, there’s a ray of hope with Morant’s expected return. Suspended for the first 25 games following an incident involving a handgun during a livestream, Morant is slated to rejoin the team for their next game at New Orleans. Last season, Morant had impressive averages of 26.2 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds across 61 games.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins indicated that Morant is physically fit and ready to play significant minutes, although they plan to be mindful of his adjustment to NBA game shape.

The Thunder’s victory also highlighted the contributions of rookie Chet Holmgren, who tallied 17 points, seven blocks, and six rebounds. Holmgren’s defensive prowess was notable, with 15 blocks over the last two games. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised Holmgren’s fearlessness and competitive nature, particularly in challenging rim shots.

Josh Giddey’s double-double, featuring 16 points and 12 rebounds, further bolstered Oklahoma City’s performance. The team has won four of their last five games, demonstrating their growing cohesion and effectiveness.

The Grizzlies, facing challenges with several players out, including guards Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose, struggled to find their rhythm. Ziaire Williams led Memphis with 19 points, while Desmond Bane added 17. Jaren Jackson Jr., who had been on a scoring spree in recent games, was limited to 11 points. Memphis’ shooting woes were evident, as they managed only 35.3% from the field.

The Thunder established their dominance early, leading 68-53 at halftime, driven by Gilgeous-Alexander’s 17 points and Holmgren’s defensive presence. They further extended their lead in the third quarter, holding Memphis to a mere 2-for-19 shooting.

Looking ahead, the Grizzlies face a crucial game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday, while the Thunder host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

NBA: Trae Young’s Double-Double Leads Hawks to Victory Over Pistons, Extends Detroit’s Losing Streak

ATLANTA — Trae Young’s impressive performance, marked by 31 points and 15 assists, propelled the Atlanta Hawks to a 130-124 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. This loss extended Detroit’s losing streak to 24 consecutive games, inching them closer to the NBA record.

Young, determined not to let the Pistons break their streak against the Hawks, achieved his fourth consecutive game scoring at least 30 points with at least 10 assists. This performance marked his team-leading 16th double-double of the season.

Despite a career-high 43 points from Pistons’ Cade Cunningham, Detroit couldn’t snap its losing streak, which dates back to an Oct. 28 win against Chicago. Cunningham’s leadership was praised by Pistons coach Monty Williams, who recognized the growth and challenge faced by the young team during this difficult period.

Bojan Bogdanovic added 25 points for Detroit, but it was the Hawks’ early dominance that set the tone for the game. Atlanta’s sharpshooting was on display as they made 9-of-12 three-pointers in the first quarter, with Young sinking two of them. Overall, the Hawks hit 16-of-36 from beyond the arc.

The Pistons showed resilience with repeated comeback attempts, but the Hawks managed to maintain their lead. The NBA record for the longest losing streak within a single season, 26 games, is shared by the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers.

For Atlanta, Saddiq Bey scored 21 points, and Dejounte Murray contributed 20. De’Andre Hunter’s crucial 19 points, including two key three-pointers, helped stave off Detroit’s late surge. The Pistons again closed the gap to six points in the final minutes, but James Wiseman’s missed free throws hampered their comeback effort.

The game also saw significant contributions from Atlanta’s Clint Capela, who returned from injury to score 17 points and grab a game-high 15 rebounds. Hawks coach Quin Snyder expressed hope for the return of Jalen Johnson, whose absence has been felt by the team.

Detroit continues to grapple with injuries, with center Isaiah Stewart day-to-day and Jalen Duren unable to practice. For the Hawks, guard Bogdan Bogdanovic is recovering from right ankle inflammation but missed his second consecutive game.

The Pistons will look to end their losing streak as they host the Utah Jazz on Thursday, while the Hawks will visit the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, hoping to build on this victory.

NBA:Timberwolves Overcome Halftime Deficit to Beat Heat 112-108, Tie for NBA’s Best Record

MIAMI — In a remarkable turnaround, the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied from a significant halftime deficit to defeat the Miami Heat 112-108 on Monday night, tying them with Boston for the NBA’s best record at 20-5. This victory, marked by a strong defensive showing in the second half, highlights Minnesota’s resilience and defensive prowess.

The Timberwolves, facing their second-biggest midgame deficit of the season, were galvanized after halftime. Karl-Anthony Towns, who was in foul trouble in the first half, and coach Chris Finch, who received a technical foul, played key roles in the team’s comeback. Anthony Edwards led the scoring with 32 points, while Towns added 18. Minnesota’s defense was pivotal, allowing only 42 points after the break.

Rudy Gobert, Minnesota’s center, reflected on the team’s ability to respond to challenges, especially on the defensive end, which he believes is crucial for their success. Naz Reid contributed 15 points, and Mike Conley added 12, while Gobert himself secured 16 rebounds.

For the Heat, Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, returning from injuries, scored 47 points combined. Herro, out for 18 games with a sprained right ankle, contributed 25 points, and Adebayo, who missed seven games with a bruised left hip, added 22. Jimmy Butler, Duncan Robinson, and Josh Richardson also contributed significantly for Miami.

Despite the contributions from Herro and Adebayo, Minnesota’s comeback was notable. The team has consistently demonstrated an ability to overturn deficits, recording their seventh win after trailing by at least 10 points. Conversely, Miami suffered their seventh loss after leading by double figures.

This 20-5 start is a historic one for Minnesota, marking their best performance through 25 games in franchise history, surpassing the 17-8 start of the 2001-02 Timberwolves. Coach Finch praised his team’s willingness to adapt and make it work.

The game’s turning point came in the third quarter when Minnesota’s defense tightened, significantly reducing Miami’s scoring and setting up a fourth-quarter comeback. Miami’s coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged Minnesota’s status as the league’s top defensive team.

The Timberwolves will next face Philadelphia on Wednesday, while the Heat will take on Orlando the same night, as both teams look to build on their performances.

NBA: Siakam and Trent Jr. Power Raptors Past Depleted Hornets 114-99

TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors, led by Pascal Siakam’s 27 points and Gary Trent Jr.’s season-high 22 points and first career double-double, overcame the Charlotte Hornets 114-99 on Monday night. The Raptors’ fourth-quarter surge was instrumental in their victory over a Hornets team missing several key players, including Miles Bridges.

Bridges, who was unable to enter Canada due to past legal issues, was notably missed by the Hornets. Charlotte’s center Nick Richards acknowledged Bridges’ significant impact on the team’s scoring, rebounding, and defense. Hornets coach Steve Clifford, however, did not comment on Bridges’ absence.

The Hornets were already without starters LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward, and Mark Williams due to injuries, as well as key reserve Cody Martin. Despite these setbacks, Toronto’s Scottie Barnes made a substantial contribution with 22 points, matching his career-high with 17 rebounds. Dennis Schroder and Precious Achiuwa also added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Trent’s eight points in the final quarter were crucial as the Raptors outscored the Hornets 35-18. Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic praised Trent’s shooting and impact on the game. On the Hornets’ side, Terry Rozier led with 22 points, and P.J. Washington Jr. added 15. Despite efforts from Bryce McGowens and Brandon Miller, who each scored 14 points, the Hornets struggled to overcome the absence of key players, suffering their fifth straight loss.

Charlotte managed to score 23 points off 19 Toronto turnovers but couldn’t maintain their momentum. Washington and Rozier, who both returned after injuries, started the game but couldn’t steer the team to victory.

Miles Bridges’ absence was a significant talking point, given his ongoing legal issues and recent probation for a domestic violence case. Bridges has been impactful since returning from suspension, averaging 19.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in 12 starts.

The Raptors faced their own challenges with turnovers in the first quarter but managed to close the gap by the end of the third quarter, thanks to Siakam’s 10 points in the period.

Toronto also had a notable presence in former Raptors coach Dwane Casey, who attended the game. The Raptors’ resilience was on full display as they rallied in the second half to secure the win.

Looking ahead, the Hornets will face Indiana on Wednesday night, while the Raptors host Denver on the same evening.

NBA: Cavaliers Edge Rockets 135-130 in Overtime for 11th Straight OT Win

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers extended their remarkable run in overtime games, securing their 11th consecutive victory in extra periods by outlasting the Houston Rockets 135-130 on Monday night. Donovan Mitchell led the way with 37 points, while Sam Merrill emerged off the bench with a career-high 19 points, playing a pivotal role in the win.

Cleveland’s performance in overtime was crucial, outscoring Houston 13-8, which tied them for the second-longest OT winning streak in NBA history. The New Orleans franchise holds the record with 13 consecutive overtime victories from 2006-08. Mitchell praised Merrill’s contribution, acknowledging his hard work and seizing the opportunity when it mattered most.

The game was tightly contested, with Rockets’ Alperin Sengun tying the score with a free throw in the closing seconds of regulation. Caris LeVert missed a potential game-winner for the Cavaliers, and Sengun’s fadeaway at the buzzer narrowly missed, sending the game into overtime.

For the Rockets, Fred VanVleet had a standout performance with season-highs of 27 points and 17 assists, along with eight rebounds. Sengun himself added 24 points, contributing significantly despite acknowledging the team’s defensive shortcomings. The Rockets’ road struggles continued, with their record dropping to 2-10 away from home.

The Cavaliers had to navigate this game without starting power forward Evan Mobley and former All-Star point guard Darius Garland, both sidelined until February due to injuries. Despite these absences, the team has shown resilience and adaptability, with Mitchell highlighting the ‘by committee’ approach in their absence.

Max Strus scored 17 points, and LeVert added 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Merrill’s performance, including 5 of 10 from the 3-point line, was a significant factor in the Cavaliers’ success. He expressed gratitude for the trust shown by Coach J.B. Bickerstaff and acknowledged the team’s impressive overtime record.

On the Rockets’ side, VanVleet, in his first season with Houston, is averaging career-highs in assists and minutes. The first half saw a tightly contested game with multiple lead changes and ties.

An interesting subplot was the presence of Dillon Brooks, who scored 16 points in his first game back in Cleveland since a notable incident involving Mitchell when Brooks was with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The third quarter was particularly intense with a high number of fouls and free throws, leading to Cleveland scoring a season-high 42 points in the period and taking a slim lead into the fourth quarter.

Looking ahead, the Rockets will host Atlanta on Wednesday night, while the Cavaliers continue their homestand against Utah.

NBA: Chicago Bulls Halt 76ers’ Winning Streak with a 108-104 Victory

PHILADELPHIA — The Chicago Bulls, led by Coby White’s 24 points, snapped the Philadelphia 76ers’ six-game winning streak with a hard-fought 108-104 victory Monday night. White’s standout performance, coupled with significant contributions from Nikola Vucevic and DeMar DeRozan, was pivotal in the Bulls’ success.

Vucevic, a former Sixer, delivered an impressive 23-point performance, while DeRozan added 15 points to the Bulls’ tally. Vucevic, who also grabbed eight rebounds and shot an efficient 10 for 18 from the floor, spoke about the team’s growing chemistry and momentum, despite their 11-17 record. The Bulls have found a rhythm, winning six of their last nine games, even in the absence of All-Star Zach LaVine, who is out with left foot inflammation.

Bulls coach Billy Donovan emphasized the team’s competitive spirit against stronger teams and the need for consistency. This victory highlighted the Bulls’ ability to respond under pressure and maintain composure throughout the game.

Joel Embiid led the 76ers with a formidable 40 points and 13 rebounds, marking his 11th consecutive game with at least 30 points and 10 boards. Tyrese Maxey also shone brightly, contributing 29 points. However, the rest of the Sixers struggled to make a significant impact, with no other player reaching double figures in scoring.

76ers coach Nick Nurse noted the team’s slight lag in defensive execution and the lack of strong individual performances that had characterized their previous victories. The Sixers had been dominant against sub-.500 teams, boasting a 12-0 record before this matchup.

The Bulls overcame an early 12-point deficit, thanks largely to White’s explosive first half, where he scored 16 points, helping Chicago build a 55-44 lead by halftime. White has been in exceptional form, averaging 22.9 points over the last nine games.

The Bulls extended their lead to 12 after three quarters. The Sixers made a spirited comeback, briefly taking an 89-87 lead on a Maxey 3-pointer. However, the Bulls responded with a decisive 13-2 run, establishing an eight-point lead with just three minutes remaining. DeRozan’s crucial free throws in the final moments and a strong defensive stand against Embiid in the closing seconds sealed the win for Chicago.

Donovan stressed the importance of teamwork and collective effort in the Bulls’ recent success, highlighting the significance of shared responsibility on the court.

The Bulls now look forward to hosting the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, while the 76ers will face Minnesota at home on the same day.
