Men Volleyball Club World Championship: Ahmedabad Defenders hold head high in loss against Itambe Minas

Bengaluru, Dec 6: Prime Volleyball League champions Ahmedabad Defenders put up a spirited performance in their Men’s Club World Championship debut against the formidable Itambe Minas from Brazil before going down 0-3 in their Pool A clash.

The home team, who also became the first Indian club to play in the prestigious competition, took the fight to Minas but the experience in the rank of Minas made the difference in the final analysis as the Brazilian opened their account with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 win.

Outside hitter Amit Balwan Singh was the highest scorer for the home team with a total of 13 points and was well supported by A Ramaswamy (7), LM Manoj (7) and Ashwal Rai (5) but their effort wasn’t enough to help the team to win at least one set in what was an historic occasion for Indian volleyball.

On Wednesday, Bengaluru became only the second Asian city after Doha, Qatar, to host the prestigious Men’s Volleyball Club World Championships and the home side rode on a strong support in the Koramangala Indoor stadium to punch above their weight.

Michael Sanchez top scored for Minas with 20 points, that included 17 spikes and two quality blocks. Paulo Silva and Marcus Coelho chipped in with 10 and 9 points respectively.

Ahmedabad Defenders, newcomers to the world stage, got a glimpse of the challenge ahead of them when the Minas attackers went for their booming spikes to clinch the first three points. The Indian club found a place on the scoreboard thanks to a service error.

A clever spike preceded by a block from Ashwal Rai saw the home team close the gap and the service errors from the Brazilians only gave the Defenders more confidence as they kept pace with their opponents till 10-12.

But the experience of Minas team, playing in the competition for the third time, came to the fore thereafter as B Michael Sanchez and Paulo da Silva came in from the wide to score points with cross court spikes. The eventual winners preferred to attack from the back court to create angles to find the winners.

The reversal in the opening set only made the Defenders more determined to punch above their weight with Manoj and Amit keeping up the pressure on their opponents by killing the short sets executed by captain A Muthusamy.
The home team stayed neck-and-neck with Minas till 20-20, raising hope of winning a set. But Brazilian international Isac Santos came up with a spike and big serve to open up a two-point advantage for Minas and they maintained that advantage to double their set score.

The Defenders had their best passage of play in the match at the start of the third set when they clinched three of the first four points with quality blocks. But this is when Santos proved why he is the star of this Brazilian outfit as he helped the team win seven straight points with quality serves to give his team a 5-11 lead.

The home side needed a miracle to force a comeback from this setback. To their credit, they did not throw in the towel and kept fighting. But the likes of Santos, Sanchez and Marcus Cohelo were just too powerful with their spikes from the front and back of the court as they wrapped up the match in three sets and earn three full points.

The tournament will go on till 10th of December at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru. Ahmedabad Defenders will find themselves in Pool A, facing the defending champions, Sir Sicoma Perugia from Italy, and Brazil’s Minas Tênis Clube (Itambé Minas). In Pool B, Halkbank Spor Kulübü from Turkey, Sada Cruzeiro Volei from Brazil, and Japan’s Suntory Sunbirds are grouped.

The match tickets can be purchased at BookMyShow.

The Men’s Volleyball Club World Championships 2023 will be telecast live in India on Sony Sports Network across Sony Ten 1 & Sony Ten 3 channels and the broadcast will be shown globally on Volleyball World. Fans in India can also stream the tournament online on FanCode.

Pro Kabaddi: U.P. Yoddhas Register Thirty-Point Win Over Haryana Steelers

Ahmedabad, 06th December 2023: The U.P. Yoddhas put up an all-round masterclass to overpower the Haryana Steelers 57-27 at the EKA Arena by TransStadia on Wednesday. A complete team performance was highlighted by the brilliance of raiders Surender Gill (13 points) & Pardeep Narwal (12 points) and defender Sumit (8 points).

LIVE MATCH CENTREThe initial minutes of the game were marked by the two sides exchanging points at regular intervals, albeit the Yoddhas doing it via touch points and the Steelers reliant on bonus points. With their numbers dwindling quickly, the Steelers’ Ashish carried out a SUPER TACKLE on Pardeep Narwal to help his team stay in the contest.

Despite that brief resistance, the Yoddhas were too good on the attacking front, and within minutes, they inflicted the first ALL OUT of the game on the Steelers to take a commanding 12-6 lead.

Despite a brief regrouping by the Steelers, the game followed a similar pattern, with the Yoddhas, and Surender Gill in particular, being completely dominant. Almost single-handedly, Gill inflicted a second ALL OUT on the Steelers with four minutes of the first half to go, to give them a 29-14 lead at the break.

A third and fourth ALL OUT followed within the first 8 minutes of the second half. With a massive 25-point lead, the Yoddhas seemed to be cruising to an easy win. Gill’s raiding brilliance was perfectly complemented by Sumit and Nitesh Kumar’s brilliant tackling and there seemed to be nothing the Steelers could do to curb the wave.

The Yoddhas continued to put pressure on their opponents relentlessly and eventually wrapped up a massive 30-point victory.

Pro Kabaddi: Sachin Scores 14 Points As Patna Pirates Register Massive Victory

Ahmedabad, 06th December 2023: The Patna Pirates produced a scintillating performance to record a 50-28 victory over Telugu Titans in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 on Wednesday. Raider Sachin led the charge for the Pirates with 14 touch points in the match, meanwhile, Pawan Sehrawat was the lone warrior for the Titans with 11 points at the EKA Arena by TransStadia.

Pawan Sehrawat picked up a raid point early in the game as the Titans took the lead at 3-1 in the second minute. However, Sachin pulled off a SUPER RAID soon after and helped the Pirates level the scores at 3-3. But Sehrawat also effected a SUPER RAID in the next minute as the Titans inched ahead at 6-3. Ankit tackled Sehrawat in the 7th minute, but the Titans still held the lead at 8-7. However, Sachin effected another magnificent raid in the 10th minute to help the Pirates take the lead at 11-10.

Sachin continued to lead the charge for the Pirates and reduced the Titans to just one member on the mat. But Omkar Patil carried out a brilliant raid as the Titans stayed in the contest at 13-13. However, the Telugu Titans couldn’t hold on for too long and were eventually ALL OUT in the 13th minute. The raiders and defenders kept picking up points as the Patna side earned a healthy lead at 19-13. The Pirates inflicted another ALL OUT just before half-time to take a massive lead at 28-16.

The Titans tackled Sachin in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Pirates still held a big lead at 31-19. The Patna side continued to showcase brilliant form and extended their lead further at 34-22 in the 27th minute. Sehrawat tried fighting for the Titans, but he didn’t receive much support from his team members as the Pirates kept forging ahead and eventually walked off the mat with a colossal victory.

MLB: Veteran Reliever Craig Kimbrel Nears Free-Agent Deal with Orioles to Strengthen Bullpen

Craig Kimbrel, a seasoned reliever in Major League Baseball (MLB), is reportedly nearing a free-agent deal with the Baltimore Orioles, as per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Although the Orioles have yet to officially confirm this development, Kimbrel’s potential addition comes at a critical time. The Orioles are looking to bolster their bullpen, especially in light of AL Reliever of the Year Félix Bautista’s absence for the 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. Kimbrel’s presence alongside All-Star Yennier Cano would significantly strengthen the Orioles’ bullpen.

At 35, Kimbrel is among the most accomplished relievers in MLB history. He achieved a milestone on May 26, becoming the eighth pitcher to record 400 saves, a feat he accomplished in his 730th career game. This achievement places him behind only Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman in terms of the fewest appearances to reach 400 saves. Kimbrel was also selected for his ninth All-Star Game approximately six weeks later, a testament to his enduring skill and reputation in the league.

During his one-year contract with the Phillies, valued at $10 million, Kimbrel was named the National League Reliever of the Month for June. He concluded the 2023 regular season with an impressive performance, allowing just two earned runs through 12 innings in September. However, Kimbrel experienced a downturn during the NLCS against the D-backs in October, leading to his removal from the closer’s role. This was reminiscent of his time with the Dodgers in 2022, where a similar slump resulted in his exclusion from the NLDS roster.

Kimbrel’s career statistics are notable. He has the second-best strikeouts per nine innings (K/9) rate (14.2) among pitchers with at least 500 innings pitched and maintains high strikeout and whiff rates. Conversely, his walk rate has been above 10 percent in five of the past six seasons, and he often allows significant contact when hitters connect with his pitches. As he enters his 15th MLB season, Kimbrel holds a 2.40 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over 757 1/3 innings, having played for teams like the Braves, Padres, Red Sox, Cubs, White Sox, Dodgers, and Phillies. While his postseason performance isn’t as stellar, highlighted by a 4.50 ERA and 5.16 FIP, he did secure a World Series ring with Boston in 2018.

Men’s Volleyball Club world championship: Japan’s Suntory Sunbirds begin campaign with dominating 3-0 win over Turkey’s Halkbank Spor Kulubu

Bangalore, December 6: Japan’s Suntory Sunbirds came up with a strong overall performance to beat Turkey’s Halkbank Spor Kulubu in straight sets in the opening Pool B encounter of the Men’s Volleyball Club World Championship 2023 at the Koramangala Indoor stadium here on Wednesday.

Sunbirds, the first Japanese club to participate in the Club World Championship, took time to find their feet against their Turkish opponents but were able to turn the tables midway through the opening set and went on to win 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 in just over an hour to clinch three full points.

This is the first time that an international volleyball tournament of this stature is being held in India with some of the world’s best players in action over a period of five days. Six teams have been divided into two groups, making every match a must-win encounter to reach the knock-out stage.

And Sunbirds put themselves in pole position for one of the semi-final spots from Pool B on Wednesday, bagging all three points. According to the tournament format, the winning team gets three points only if they drop one or no sets.

Such a result for Sunbirds didn’t look possible during the initial exchanges of the opening set with the Turkish side boasting of the likes of Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth and Nimir Abdel-Aziz of Netherlands going on the offensive.

Despite a couple of service errors, Halkbank looked in control with a four-point advantage at 18-14 before Sunbirds turned the tables with their strong blocking and smart attack from Russian Opposite Dmitriy Muserskiy and outside hitter De Armas Berrio Alain Junior of Cuba.

Muserskiy, a 2012 Olympic gold medallist, went for the big spikes from the right while Alain Junior came up with smart angles to deceive the opposition blockers.

With the momentum completely in their favour, Sunbirds began the second game with a lot more confidence and whatever pressure Halkbank would build on them was released thanks to their service errors.

Overall, the Turkish outfit was guilty of 17 service errors with the captain Nimir making five mistakes in his 13 attempts across three sets.

In contrast, Sunbirds raised their levels as the match progressed and Alain Junior was definitely the stand out player, scoring a total of 15 points, nine from attack, three from blocks and three on serve including an ace. Muserskiy, one of the tallest player in the volleyball circuit, supported him by clinching a total of 14 points.

The duo took turns to leave the Turkish defence flummoxed in the third set as Sunbirds clinched seven straight points from 10-10 and left their opponents an uphill task to make a comeback.

Sunbirds came up with eight block points and three aces in the third set to earn nine match points. Halkbank saved the first but it was not to be there day and a service error Matic Mert meant that the team has very little to show for their day’s effort.

Golf’s Longest Drives to be Curtailed: New Ball Specifications Announced by R&A and USGA

In a landmark decision set to reshape the face of professional golf, the R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA) have announced a significant change in golf ball specifications, aimed at reducing the distance of tee shots by approximately 15 yards for the sport’s biggest hitters.

This move, effective from January 2028 for elite players and 2030 for recreational golfers, is a response to the increasing distances achieved in the modern game, largely facilitated by advancements in golf ball technology and club design. The changes are expected to have a minimal impact on recreational players, reducing their longest shots by less than five yards.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions. While some, including R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers, view it as a necessary step to preserve the integrity and balance of the sport, others, particularly golf manufacturers and leading tours, have expressed strong opposition. One manufacturer even criticized the move as “a solution seeking a problem.”

Slumbers emphasized the responsibility of the sport in maintaining golf course integrity and environmental sustainability. The growing trend of extending golf courses to accommodate longer drives is not only impractical but also environmentally irresponsible, according to Slumbers.

Statistics lend weight to the R&A and USGA’s concerns. The PGA Tour’s top player, Rory McIlroy, along with several others, averages drives of over 320 yards, a stark contrast to the figures from 2002 where only John Daly surpassed the 300-yard mark.

The new regulations will alter the ‘Overall Distance Standard’ for golf balls. Currently, a ball hit by a robotic club at 120 mph is allowed to travel 317 yards. Under the new rules, this standard will apply to balls hit at a higher speed of 125 mph, mirroring the upper echelons of professional swing speeds.

The decision follows extensive consultation with manufacturers and professional tours under the “Vancouver Protocol”, a set of guidelines agreed upon by the golf industry. Slumbers acknowledged the diverse feedback received during this five-year process but maintained that the final decision was made with the long-term future of the game in mind.

Despite the anticipated reduction in distance for elite players, the R&A and USGA have decided against a bifurcated approach, which would have seen different rules for professionals and amateurs. This approach was initially proposed but received little support, with golfers expressing a strong preference for uniformity in the rules.

Former American Ryder Cup player Keegan Bradley, speaking at the Hero World Challenge, labeled the rollback as “stupid”, particularly for amateur players, echoing a sentiment of opposition among some professionals.

With this decision, the R&A and USGA reaffirm their commitment to preserving the traditional challenges of golf and ensuring its sustainable future. As the sport continues to evolve, these governing bodies stand firm in their responsibility to maintain the essence and integrity of golf.

Yonex Sunrise Guwahati Masters: Sameer Verma upsets third seed Kiran George

December 6, Guwahati: Experienced campaigner Sameer Verma proved that he was getting closer to his best as he upset men’s singles third seed Kiran George in straight games while women’s singles fifth seed Aakarshi Kashyap saved a match point to beat Denmark’s Amalie Schulz to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the Yonex Sunrise Guwahati Masters Super 100 badminton tournament here on Wednesday.

Verma, who has been struggling with injuries for the last few months, dominated the proceedings against the third seed Kiran through-out the 32-minute second round encounter, winning 21-13, 21-13.

While Kiran could not find a way past Verma, Kashyap kept her nerves after losing the opening game to beat Schulz 15-21, 21-17, 22-20 in a match that saw the Indian play catch-up in the business end of the third game after her opponent clinched four straight points from 13-16 to take a one-point lead.

Kashyap saved a match point at 19-20 and then bagged two consecutive points to set up a second round clash against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Sih yun.

Also advancing to the next round were women’s singles players Ira Sharma and Tanya Hemanth, who defeated their more illustrious Malaysian opponents. Ira came from a game down to beat Wong Ling Ching, ranked 63 placed above the Indian, 17-21, 21-17, 21-12 while Tanya got the better of top Malaysian star Kisona Selvaduray 21-16, 15-21, 21-16 to reach the Round of 16.

Ira will now face another Malaysian Karupathevan Letshanaa while Tanya takes on compatriot Malvika Bansod for a place in the quarterfinals. Malvika had earlier defeated Uganda’s Fadilah Rafi 21-10, 21-10 in the earlier round.

Men’s National champion Mithun Manjunath and junior world championships bronze medallist Ayush Shetty registered contrasting wins to advance to the next round. Mithun, seeded 7th, defeated compatriot Hemanth Gowda 21-14, 21-10 in the second round while Shetty got the better of Indonesia’s Jason Alexander 21-12, 14-21, 21-17.

Later in the day, women’s singles national champion Anupama Upadhyaya advanced to the pre-quarters with a 21-11, 21-16 win over Bilqis Prasista of Indonesia.

But the marquee match of the day was the clash was a face-off between two players from different generations and different style. And it was the 29-year-old Verma, who came on top with flying colours.

The former world no. 11, who has now slipped to 91 and is playing in only his ninth event in the last 12 months, was slow to get of the blocks and trailed Kiran 1-5 in the opening game. But he clawed his way back to level the score at 10-10 and won eight of the nine points players from 13-12 to draw first blood.

He was much more clinical in the second game, racing to an 8-3 lead. Though Kiran tried to fight back and won five consecutive points at one stage to close the gap at 15-11 but it was too little too late.

Pro Kabaddi: I Can’T Believe I Hold Several Records In Pkl,’ Says Fazel Atrachali After His 100Th Match As Captain

Ahmedabad, 06th December 2023: The Gujarat Giants registered their third consecutive victory in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 after defeating U Mumba 39-37 at the  EKA Arena by TransStadia on Tuesday. Sonu led the charge for the Giants once again with 11 points in the game.

Speaking about his performance, Giants’ Head Coach Ram Mehar Singh said, “Sonu gives it his all in every raid. He uses his height brilliantly. We have told him to play his game and decide his own strategies. He has played very well in all three games. And when he does well, the rest of the team also gets motivated to put up good performances.”

The Gujarat Giants’ Captain Fazel Atrachali also lauded Sonu’s performance, “He has been the hero for the Gujarat Giants this season. He’s our game-changer. Rakesh also played well for us against U Mumba. We have a lot of good players and our team is well-balanced.”

Furthermore, Atrachali, who plays as a specialist defender in the side, tried his hand at raiding in his team’s match against U Mumba. When asked about the same, he said,

“I used to be a raider about ten years ago. I played as a raider for Iran in 2013. I was happy about how I effected my raid and I didn’t know that it was a Do-or-Die raid. I went in to carry out an empty raid, but I managed to clinch a raid point.”

The Iranian, who holds the records for the most tackle points (432) and most successful tackles (406) in the history of PKL, spoke about his journey in the world’s biggest kabaddi league, “My journey in the Pro Kabaddi League has not been easy. I was just looking for one chance when I entered PKL for the first time in Season 2. And now I am the most successful defender in PKL. It’s difficult for an Indian to become a star in PKL, so imagine how difficult it would be for a foreign player. Sometimes, I can’t believe I hold so many records in this competition.”

Mushfiqur Rahim First Bangladesh Batter Dismissed for Obstructing the Field in Test Cricket History

In a recent cricket match, Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim experienced an unusual dismissal against New Zealand. In the 41st over, Rahim was given out for obstructing the field. He had defended a ball and instinctively extended his right hand to keep the ball away, although it was far from the stumps. This action led to his dismissal, making him the first Bangladesh Men’s batter to be dismissed in this manner.

The decision was reviewed by the third umpire after New Zealand’s appeal, who confirmed that Rahim had deliberately stopped the ball. This falls under the “obstructing the field” rule in cricket. Since 2017, the handling of the ball has been considered part of this rule. Specifically, a batter is out for obstructing the field if they wilfully attempt to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action, or if the striker wilfully strikes the ball with a hand not holding the bat while the ball is in play. Rahim’s action of pushing the ball away led to his dismissal after he scored 35 off 83 balls. This was also the first instance of a batter being dismissed for obstructing the field in Tests since the rule update in 2017.
