MacKinnon’s OT Heroics Lead Avalanche to Dramatic 5-4 Win Over Stars

DALLAS — Nathan MacKinnon delivered in a clutch moment, scoring his second goal of the game in overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a thrilling 5-4 victory against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Thursday. MacKinnon, who was earlier named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, sealed the win on a 2-on-0 rush, capping off a spirited comeback by the Avalanche.

Mikko Rantanen’s crucial equalizer with 1:09 left in the third period set the stage for MacKinnon’s dramatic overtime winner. “I thought we played a really solid game, a couple of breakdowns. But overall, I thought, we’re going toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the league,” MacKinnon reflected on the team’s performance.

The Avalanche (25-11-3), now on a seven-game point streak, also benefited from Jonathan Drouin’s two goals and Jack Johnson’s two assists. Goalie Alexandar Georgiev contributed with 28 saves, helping Colorado extend their winning momentum.

For the Stars (22-10-5), Tyler Seguin scored twice, and Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment each tallied two assists. Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 29 saves, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the Avalanche’s late surge. The Stars faced a significant blow when defenseman Miro Heiskanen left the game with a lower-body injury, adding to the team’s challenges.

Colorado’s comeback began in earnest with Drouin’s two goals, including a power-play goal in the final seconds of the second period and a deflection off Johnson’s point shot. Seguin’s efforts had initially given Dallas a two-goal lead, but the Avalanche’s resilience shone through.

MacKinnon’s performance was historically significant as he became the second player in franchise history to score overtime goals in consecutive regular-season games, a feat last achieved by Greg De Vries in 2003. Additionally, MacKinnon’s 64th point surpassed Rantanen’s previous record for the most points by an Avalanche player before the 40-game mark since the team’s move to Colorado in 1995-96.

Despite the win, the Avalanche faced their own injury concerns, with defenseman Bowen Byram sustaining a lower-body injury during the game.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar praised his team’s response, saying, “I liked the way our guys responded. They just kept playing their game. Little bit more intensity as the game went on for our team, which led to some scoring chances.”

The Stars, despite a strong showing, will look to regroup and address the defensive lapses that allowed Colorado’s comeback. Dallas coach Peter DeBoer acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “Their best players and their best line had all five goals.”

This victory underlines the Avalanche’s tenacity and ability to fight back in challenging situations, cementing their status as one of the league’s top teams.

The victory, characterized by Severson as an “ugly win,” marked a significant turnaround for Columbus (13-19-8), who have been struggling recently with just two wins in their last seven games (2-2-3). Goaltender Daniil Tarasov played a pivotal role, making 39 saves in regulation and overtime, and stopping all three attempts in the shootout.

Travis Konecny was a standout for Philadelphia (19-13-6), scoring twice on the day he was named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game. Joel Farabee and Sean Couturier each notched two assists, while Samuel Ersson contributed with 26 saves. Despite these efforts, the Flyers suffered their sixth loss in their past seven games (1-3-3).

Severson’s goal early in the third period began the Blue Jackets’ resurgence, followed by Bean’s equalizer at 10:20, showcasing the team’s persistence. “You’ve just got to get one,” Severson remarked, emphasizing the momentum shift that began with their first goal.

For the Flyers, Konecny’s goals extended his point streak to six games, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win. Coach John Tortorella expressed the need to maintain leads longer and manage the game more effectively.

The Blue Jackets entered the game with a minus-31 goal differential, but their ability to claw back from deficits was on full display. “Teams have come back from not only one, two goals but a lot more than that,” Severson said, highlighting their resilience.

The Flyers had a significant opportunity to extend their lead with a two-minute 5-on-3 power play, but Tarasov’s exceptional goalkeeping kept Columbus in the game. Blue Jackets coach Pascal Vincent praised Tarasov, particularly for his performance during the 5-on-3.

Konecny’s performance was a bright spot for Philadelphia, with a career-high 26:18 ice time and seven shots on goal. The Flyers’ decision to play with 11 forwards and seven defensemen, including Rasmus Ristolainen’s milestone 700th NHL game, added to the game’s narrative.

This win for the Blue Jackets underscores their capacity to rally from behind and secure victories in challenging circumstances.

The Blackhawks (11-25-2), meanwhile, faced their fourth consecutive loss despite a goal from Colin Blackwell and 28 saves by Petr Mrazek. They continue to grapple with a spate of injuries, missing key players like Tyler Johnson, Andreas Athanasiou, Anthony Beauvillier, Taylor Raddysh, Seth Jones, and Taylor Hall.

Chicago’s coach Luke Richardson acknowledged the challenge of dealing with such extensive injuries, emphasizing the need for players to adapt to new roles and lineups.

The game saw the Rangers take control early, with Panarin’s first-period goal and Kreider’s second-period power-play goal setting the tone. Crosby’s performance, highlighted by his game-winning power-play goal at 11:19 in the third period, came right after his selection to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game. The goal put Pittsburgh ahead after Brad Marchand’s short-handed goal at 3:08 had leveled the score for Boston. The game saw several momentum shifts, with Pittsburgh initially leading 5-2 early in the second period, only for Boston to rally back.

“Weird start with five [goals] in the first eight minutes, but some games happen like that,” Crosby reflected on the game’s unpredictable nature.

Kris Letang’s three assists, along with notable contributions from Lars Eller and Drew O’Connor, who each had a goal and an assist, were crucial in Pittsburgh’s victory. The Penguins (19-14-4) have now won six of their last eight games. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic made 24 saves, contributing to the team’s resilience.

For the Bruins (23-8-6), despite losing their winning streak, David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie each provided a goal and two assists, with Marchand scoring twice. Goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman made 29 saves in a game where defensive tactics were overshadowed by offensive prowess.

Boston coach Jim Montgomery expressed concerns about the team’s ice management and decision-making, highlighting the need for better control, especially in high-pressure situations.

The match started at a frenetic pace, with five goals scored in the first 7:21, setting the record for the fastest five goals to start a game this season. Both teams showcased their offensive strengths, with Pittsburgh eventually sealing the deal in the closing minutes.

Evgeni Malkin, playing his 1,100th NHL game, had one shot on goal for Pittsburgh, contributing to his impressive career tally. Marchand’s short-handed goal, a record 34th for his career with the Bruins, was a highlight for Boston, despite the final outcome.

Looking forward, the Penguins will aim to carry their winning momentum, while the Bruins will seek to regroup and address their strategic gaps.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – In a sensational finish, Nikola Jokic’s 40-foot buzzer-beater clinched a remarkable comeback for the Denver Nuggets, who overcame an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors 130-127 on Thursday night.

Jokic, delivering a standout performance, amassed 34 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. His crucial short jumper tied the game at 127 with just 26 seconds remaining. The Warriors’ final possession crumbled with a turnover by Stephen Curry, paving the way for Jokic’s dramatic game-winning shot from near the right sideline.

The defending champion Nuggets, riding high on a wave of success, have won 11 of their last 13 games, including six consecutive road victories. This win sends the Warriors, who have been struggling to reach a .500 record and recently ended a three-game losing streak, into further uncertainty with a 1-3 record on their seven-game home stand.

Denver’s Aaron Gordon contributed significantly with 30 points, and Jamal Murray added 25 to the team’s tally. Curry, despite the loss, led the Warriors with 30 points, and Klay Thompson chipped in with 24.

The Warriors initially seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Nuggets 44-24 and overturning a double-digit deficit. Highlighted by Brandin Podziemski’s trio of corner 3-pointers, they entered the final quarter leading 107-94.

The Nuggets had earlier set a strong pace, taking a 70-63 lead into halftime, buoyed by a 62% shooting performance from the field.

Golden State’s lineup was missing Draymond Green, serving an indefinite suspension for the 11th straight game. Despite reports from ESPN about Green’s potential return to the team facility, Warriors coach Steve Kerr did not confirm these before the game.

Adding to Golden State’s challenges, Gary Payton II faces another extended absence due to a strained hamstring, with a re-evaluation scheduled in three weeks.

Every day I can play is great news,” he said. His next challenge is against another local favorite, World No. 55 Jordan Thompson, against whom Nadal boasts a strong record against Australian players.

Bumrah’s Brilliance Leads India to Historic Win in Cape Town Test

In an exhilarating display of cricket, Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling led India to a monumental seven-wicket victory against South Africa on the second day of the second Test in Cape Town. This win not only leveled the two-match series at 1-1 but also marked India’s first Test triumph at Newlands after six unsuccessful attempts.

The day began with South Africa resuming their innings at 62 for 3. However, they faced an immediate setback as David Bedingham, attempting an ambitious drive against Bumrah, edged the ball to the wicketkeeper. The South African batting lineup continued to crumble under pressure, with Kyle Verreynne and Keshav Maharaj falling prey to Bumrah’s bowling prowess, bringing the score to a worrying 111 for 7.

Amidst this collapse, Aiden Markram emerged as a beacon of resilience for South Africa. Exhibiting remarkable skill on a challenging pitch, Markram played a series of stunning shots, scoring 47 of his 106 runs in the arc between backward point and extra cover. His spectacular innings included two sixes and two fours off Prasidh Krishna in a single over. Markram’s century, a rare feat where no other teammate crossed 20 in either innings, was the highlight of South Africa’s batting. However, his effort ended in vain as Mohammed Siraj, who previously recorded an impressive 6 for 15 in the first innings, eventually dismissed him.

Following Markram’s dismissal, South Africa’s innings quickly concluded at 176, setting a modest target of 79 runs for India.

India’s chase was brisk and aggressive, with openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal putting up a quick 44 runs. Despite losing Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in quick succession, India comfortably reached the target, thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s winning boundary.

This match, lasting just 107 overs, became the shortest Test to yield a result, emphasizing the dominance of the bowlers, particularly Bumrah and Siraj. Siraj’s remarkable performance in the first innings earned him the Player of the Match award.

The Test also marked the end of Dean Elgar’s captaincy tenure, leaving him and his team to reflect on their performance. For India, this victory in Cape Town is not just a win but a statement of their growing prowess in international cricket.

Moritz Elias’ Overtime Goal Secures German Victory and Relegates Norway in World Juniors

In a dramatic encounter at the Scandinavium, Germany clinched a crucial 5-4 victory over Norway in overtime, ensuring their participation in next year’s IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa. Moritz Elias emerged as the hero, scoring just 58 seconds into the extra period, while Norway, recently promoted to the top level, faces relegation.

The high-stakes game reflected the immense importance of the one-game showdown for both national programs, echoing their last World Junior encounter in 2014. Norway displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming deficits of 1-0, 2-1, and 4-2 to tie the game each time.

German forward Frank Hordler acknowledged the mental challenge of maintaining their lead against a tenacious Norwegian team. He highlighted the importance of simple and confident play, underscoring the victory’s significance for Germany’s national hockey program.

Norwegian player Martin Johnsen expressed disappointment but remained hopeful about Norway’s future in the tournament, citing the potential of younger players to bring the team back to the top level.

Contributions from German players Veit Oswald and captain Phillip Sinn, who each had a goal and two assists, were crucial in the win. The game began at a slow pace, with Germany opening the scoring through a well-executed two-on-one play. Norway, however, demonstrated solid defense and managed to equalize with a skillful play by Noah Steen.

The second period saw Norway emerge as the more assertive team, but Germany regained the lead through Oswald’s effort. Norway’s persistence paid off, with Mats Bakke Olsen scoring to tie the game once again.

The third period featured a flurry of goals from both teams, with Germany briefly pulling ahead before Norway fought back to level the score, setting the stage for Elias’s dramatic overtime winner.

This victory for Germany not only secures their place in the next World Junior Championship but also highlights the competitive spirit and resilience in junior hockey. Norway’s relegation, despite their spirited performance, marks a challenging end to their campaign but opens the door for future opportunities to return to the top division.

Sandesh Jhingan: “ISL is the spark igniting our belief to play in the FIFA World Cup”

Sandesh Jhingan was perhaps the first, biggest product that had emerged out of the ISL ecosystem. Over the 10 years, he has seen impeccable success at the international level, winning the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship in 2023, emerging victorious in the Intercontinental Cup twice (2018, 2023), and also the Tri-Nation series on two occasions (2017, 2023).

Raised in Chandigarh, he debuted for the senior national team in 2015, on the back of his impressive outings in the league. From being at the forefront of the famous ‘Viking Clap’ of the Blue Tigers, to being the bona fide leader at the back, everyone looks up to him in a moment of difficulty. The Arjuna Award winner is confident that India will be a regular in the FIFA World Cups going forward, and he insists that the first chapter of that book will be dedicated to the ISL, for how instrumental the top-tier has been in revolutionising the sport in the country.

“ISL is so important. Every citizen of this country will be involved, and will be remembered, in 15-20 years, when India will be where we want us to be. Nobody believed in us when we were ranked 173, people used to ask whether India has a football team? We were supporting them at that point in time, and now people take notice of us,” said Jhingan, talking in the recent episode of ‘In The Stands’.

“I can’t sum up the role that the ISL has played in the recent performances of the national team. It’s massive. The impact of the ISL has been massive. You can’t sum it up in scale, in words, it’s just been so important for the growth of our country. When we will be regular at the FIFA World Cups, trust me, people should and will say that the ISL was one of the sparks that ignited that fire. People will remember this league,” he said.

For Jhingan, the ISL has helped create local inspirations, which have encouraged youngsters to take up football professionally. He believes that an entire generation of Indians grew up idolising European sportspeople, because the country lacked homegrown heroes. That issue has been addressed through the ISL according to him, with youngsters from Chandigarh relating to his story and striving to chart their own journey on similar lines.

“You need the local heroes. When I was a kid, my local heroes were Bhaichung (Bhutia) sir, (Sunil) Chhetri bhai, Renedy (Singh) bhai, I can say the whole team. Because, I was very involved in football. Many of my friends didn’t know anything about it. But, they know who plays for Manchester United, FC Barcelona, so when you have local heroes, you can connect more with them. For the next kid in Chandigarh who is from the same sector from where I am, they are just like me. So when you connect with local heroes, and realise they are normal human beings, it inspires you and gives you a more realistic idea that you can be there,” Jhingan explained.

Joining FC Goa

Jhingan has gradually evolved to become one of the most recognisable faces of the ISL. He was perhaps the first, biggest product that had emerged out of the ISL ecosystem. For the uninitiated, Jhingan was the first-ever recipient of the ISL Emerging Player of the Year award, back in 2014. He has represented Kerala Blasters FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and Bengaluru FC in the league, before turning a new chapter with his move to the Gaurs, who were seeking a comeback after a few disappointing seasons. From having started off as a breakout 20-year-old star in 2014 to becoming a family man 10 years down the line, Jhingan’s life has come full circle and the ISL has had a major role to play in it. In fact, his move to FC Goa was driven by familial factors more than anything else.

“Manolo was the major influence behind my move to FC Goa. To be honest, it was a lot because of my family, my daughter too. Of course, if I was just with my wife, you would change your decisions. When I was single, I had different viewpoints. When you get married, you have different viewpoints. When you become a father, you become the last person you think of. I just felt like this is a good place for her to grow,” Jhingan said in an interaction with the league, touching upon his desire for her daughter to grow in the quaint and scenic state of Goa.

Looking at lifting the trophy

Over the 10 years, he has seen impeccable success at the international level, winning the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship in 2023, emerging victorious in the Intercontinental Cup twice (2018, 2023), and also the Tri-Nation series on two occasions (2017, 2023). However, the ISL trophy has eluded him still, despite having finished runner-up four times (2014, 2016, 2020-21, 2022-23). However, the ISL trophy has eluded him still, despite having finished runner-up four times (2014, 2016, 2020-21, 2022-23). Asked if he believes he can break that streak with FC Goa this season, he replied, “I never lack confidence.” Needless to say, the team has started off on a bright note on that front.

FC Goa has had a picture perfect start to the 10th season of the Indian Super League (ISL), staying unbeaten as the campaign headed into its halfway break. The appointment of Manolo Marquez and his new acquisitions have turned things around pretty swiftly for the Gaurs, and the role of defender Sandesh Jhingan in the same has been exemplary. The India international has been a stalwart at the back, playing every minute of ISL 2023-24, helping the team keep six clean sheets in 10 games. He has recorded 5.6 clearances per game with a passing accuracy of 79%. Jhingan has scored once, and his defensive partnership with Odei Onaindia has ensured that his team has conceded the least (5) goals in the league so far.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a thrilling double-overtime game, the Sacramento Kings emerged victorious over the Orlando Magic, 138-135, on Wednesday night. Domantas Sabonis notched his seventh triple-double of the season, while Malik Monk delivered a sensational 37-point performance off the bench.

Sabonis finished with 22 points, 23 rebounds, and 12 assists, showcasing his all-around impact on the game. His triple-double was critical in helping Sacramento overcome a strong shooting performance from the Magic, who set a franchise record with 25 3-pointers.

The Magic’s Paolo Banchero had a career-high 43 points but missed a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired. Jalen Suggs contributed 24 points in a valiant effort for Orlando.

De’Aaron Fox played a pivotal role in the second overtime, scoring crucial field goals, including a key jumper to put the Kings ahead 137-135 in the final minute.

The game saw numerous lead changes, especially in the overtime periods. Sabonis’ dunk, off Monk’s assist, gave the Kings a 126-125 lead late in the first overtime. However, Banchero’s layup forced the game into a second overtime.

In the closing moments of regulation, Banchero’s clutch 3-pointer gave Orlando a brief lead, but Monk’s layup tied the game at 118, setting up the overtime drama.

Sabonis, known for his triple-doubles, achieved the feat early in the third quarter, marking his fifth in the last nine games. Keegan Murray also shined for Sacramento with 28 points.

The Kings bounced back from a previous home loss to the Charlotte Hornets, extending their winning streak over the Magic to five games.

Orlando, dealing with multiple injuries, saw Franz Wagner, Gary Harris, and Banchero suffer setbacks during the game, adding to their challenges.

Looking ahead, the Magic continue their West Coast trip against the Denver Nuggets, while the Kings host the Toronto Raptors, both games scheduled for Friday. Sacramento’s resilience in this high-scoring, closely contested match underscores their potential, while Orlando will aim to overcome their injury woes and recent setbacks.

Herro and Robinson Lead Heat to Victory Over Lakers

LOS ANGELES – The Miami Heat secured a solid 110-96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, propelled by Tyler Herro’s 21 points and Duncan Robinson’s crucial fourth-quarter contributions, where he scored 11 of his 13 points.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 16 points, while Nikola Jovic and Bam Adebayo each contributed 15 points in a balanced offensive effort. All eight Miami players who saw action scored in double figures, highlighting the team’s depth. Kevin Love made a significant impact with a season-high 14 rebounds and 10 points.

The Heat managed this victory despite missing Jimmy Butler due to foot irritation, showcasing their resilience and ability to adjust.

For the Lakers, Anthony Davis stood out with 29 points and 18 rebounds, and Austin Reaves added 24 points. However, the team struggled with efficiency, especially from beyond the arc, shooting just 4 of 30 on 3-pointers.

Miami’s shooting improved dramatically in the fourth quarter, hitting 14 of 24 from the field, including 6 of 11 on 3-pointers. This contrasted with their 39.1% field goal percentage in the first three quarters.

The Lakers’ performance was marred by turnovers, with 15 of their 22 turnovers occurring in the first half, contributing to their ninth loss in the last 12 games. LeBron James, usually a key player for the Lakers, was limited to 12 points on 6 of 18 shooting.

Love’s layup in the first half was a highlight for Miami, helping them to a 43-31 lead. Despite the Lakers narrowing the gap in the second half, Miami responded decisively with a 10-2 run featuring 3-pointers from Robinson and Jaquez.

The Heat then secured their victory with a 15-6 run in the fourth quarter, demonstrating their ability to close out games effectively.

Looking ahead, the Heat conclude their five-game trip against Phoenix, while the Lakers face off against Memphis, both games scheduled for Friday night. Miami’s win, especially without Butler, underscores their depth and collective effort, while the Lakers will look to address their shooting struggles and turnovers in their upcoming games.

Matthews’ Overtime Goal Seals Maple Leafs’ Win Against Ducks

ANAHEIM – Auston Matthews’ 30th goal of the season, scored in overtime, led the Toronto Maple Leafs to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday. Matthews’ decisive strike came off a one-timer, assisted by Mitchell Marner, marking his eighth consecutive season scoring at least 30 goals.

John Tavares tied the game with a power-play goal in the third period, helping to set the stage for Matthews’ overtime heroics. Martin Jones, starting for the second consecutive night, made 27 saves.

Despite the loss, the game was a showcase for Ducks goalie Lukas Dostal, who made an impressive 55 saves, setting a franchise record for a regular-season game. Dostal’s performance kept the Ducks competitive, particularly in the face of Toronto’s 22-7 shot advantage in the third period.

Frank Vatrano scored a short-handed goal for the Ducks (13-23-1), who are struggling through their eight-game homestand with a 1-4-1 record so far. Anaheim’s defense showed resilience, but the offensive output wasn’t enough to overcome the Maple Leafs.

Tavares’ goal in the third period broke Dostal’s shutout and was a crucial moment for Toronto, reflecting the team’s persistence and ability to capitalize on power-play opportunities. Anaheim coach Greg Cronin commended Dostal’s efforts, expressing disappointment that the goalie’s stellar performance didn’t result in a win.

Matthews’ goal in overtime, his 13th shot of the game, was a fitting climax to a closely contested match. His achievement of reaching the 30-goal mark in 35 games or fewer is a feat not seen in the Maple Leafs since Frank Mahovlich in 1960-61.

The Ducks faced additional challenges with injuries and illnesses affecting key players, including defenseman Radko Gudas and forward Ross Johnston, and the recent placement of forward Troy Terry on injured reserve.

Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs continue to rely on their star players like Matthews and Tavares, while the Ducks, facing a tough season, will look to rebound from this loss and capitalize on their upcoming games.

The Capitals, now with a record of 18-12-6, have lost five of their last six games (1-3-2). They were led by Evgeny Kuznetsov, who had a goal and an assist, and Alex Ovechkin, who contributed two assists. Goalkeeper Hunter Shepard made 22 saves for Washington.

Despite a strong start by the Capitals, with a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh previously, the Devils’ offense proved too potent. New Jersey scored the last three goals of the game, with McLeod’s spinning backhand goal late in the second period being particularly pivotal. Mercer’s third-period score further extended their lead, demonstrating the team’s depth and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Washington coach Spencer Carbery praised his team’s effort against top players like Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt but acknowledged the challenges posed by the Devils’ secondary scorers. The Capitals showed moments of potential, but ultimately, they couldn’t sustain momentum against a determined New Jersey side.

Hischier opened the scoring early in the first period and doubled the lead on a power play. Mercer and Kuznetsov traded goals, maintaining a close contest until the Devils pulled away in the latter stages of the game.

The game also marked Max Pacioretty’s debut for Washington, his first appearance since January 2023. Despite not registering a shot, his return from injury adds depth to the Capitals’ roster. Kuznetsov’s achievement of surpassing Mike Gartner for the fifth-most assists in Capitals history was another notable milestone.

The Devils continue to showcase their strengths, with Hischier leading by example as captain. Their ability to execute in crucial moments, combined with solid goaltending and depth in scoring, positions them as a formidable team in the league. The Capitals, despite the loss, have shown potential and will look to rebound in their upcoming games.

Norman Powell, coming off the bench, delivered a crucial 3-pointer to help the Clippers reestablish control, finishing with 13 points.

Devin Booker was the standout for the Suns, scoring 35 points on highly efficient shooting. The Suns felt the absence of Kevin Durant, who missed the game due to soreness in his right hamstring. Bradley Beal added 21 points for Phoenix but struggled with his shooting, particularly from beyond the arc.

The Clippers set the tone early, never trailing in the game and establishing a commanding 30-13 lead by the end of the first quarter. Their first-half performance was particularly dominant, shooting 58.5% from the field and 50% on 3-pointers, with George scoring 21 points and Leonard and Terance Mann each adding 12 before the break.

The Suns’ frustrations were evident, with both Booker and Beal receiving technical fouls in the first half, reflecting their struggles against the Clippers’ onslaught.

Clarkson and Markkanen Fuel Jazz’s Overtime Win Against Pistons

SALT LAKE CITY – Jordan Clarkson’s spectacular scoring, including 29 of his 36 points in the second half and overtime, combined with Lauri Markkanen’s 31 points, led the Utah Jazz to an exhilarating 154-148 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Clarkson, fresh off his first triple-double, was instrumental in the Jazz’s win, especially with a crucial 3-pointer late in overtime that extended their lead to 149-142. This game marks the Jazz’s ninth win in their last twelve outings, showcasing their best performance stretch this season.

The dramatic contest saw Markkanen and Alec Burks exchange 3-pointers in the final moments of regulation, pushing the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Jazz took control, continuing the Pistons’ unfortunate trend of losses, with Detroit now having lost 30 of their last 31 games.

Cade Cunningham contributed significantly for the Pistons with 31 points and 12 assists, but it wasn’t enough to end their extended 17-game road losing streak.

The game was a high-scoring affair, with both teams setting their season highs in points even before overtime. The last time Utah scored 150 points in a game was in 2021, and the last time they conceded 150 was back in 1986.

Utah’s comeback began in the third quarter, leveraging turnovers into quick points, which included a 3-pointer by Simone Fontecchio and Keyonte George’s fast-break dunk. Despite leading 95-92, the Jazz faced a resilient Pistons team, which surged ahead early in the fourth quarter led by Burks and Bogdanovic.

Collin Sexton also played a key role for the Jazz, scoring 25 points and contributing to their five consecutive home wins.

Detroit’s struggle with maintaining leads was evident again, as they squandered a 10-point lead established in the second quarter.

Looking ahead, the Pistons will face the Golden State Warriors on Friday night, while the Jazz are set to continue their momentum with a road game against the Boston Celtics on the same night. This victory for Utah not only highlights their offensive firepower but also their ability to perform under pressure, setting a positive tone for their upcoming challenging road trip.

Chicago initially held the lead, with Alex Caruso’s 3-pointer giving them a 54-44 advantage late in the first half. However, the Knicks closed the gap to 55-51 at halftime and then opened the second half with an 8-2 run to regain the lead.

Throughout the third quarter, the Knicks incrementally built their lead, entering the fourth quarter ahead 86-78. The Bulls briefly narrowed the deficit to just one point on DeRozan’s 3-pointer, but the Knicks responded with a 9-2 run to extend their lead again.

Doncic and Irving Lead Mavericks to Dominant Win Over Trail Blazers

DALLAS – Luka Doncic’s impressive 41-point performance, including 30 in the first half, alongside Kyrie Irving’s 29 points, powered the Dallas Mavericks to a commanding 126-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

The All-Star duo of Doncic and Irving showed remarkable efficiency, combining for 23 of 40 from the field, a significant improvement from their previous outing against Utah. Irving’s contribution was particularly notable as it marked his second game back from a 12-game absence due to a bruised right heel.

Dallas coach Jason Kidd praised the team’s response following the loss in Utah, highlighting both the improved ball movement and defensive efforts. Irving also matched his season-high with nine rebounds, and Tim Hardaway Jr. contributed 14 points.

The victory kickstarted the Mavericks’ longest homestand of the season, seven games, beginning with back-to-back matchups against Portland. This first win sets a positive tone for Dallas as they continue this crucial stretch at home.

For the Trail Blazers, Shaedon Sharpe led with 16 points, and Anfernee Simons added 15. However, the team struggled, marking their second loss in what will be a challenging seven-game road trip.

The Mavericks faced some concerns as two frontcourt players, rookie center Dereck Lively II and forward Grant Williams, sustained ankle injuries during the game. Coach Kidd reported both injuries as mild sprains, with further updates expected soon.

Doncic’s standout performance included making 10 of 12 free throws in the first half, contributing to Dallas’s season-high score for a half and a substantial 78-47 lead at the break. Portland struggled with fouls and turnovers in the first half, which Dallas capitalized on, scoring 21 points off turnovers.

Portland coach Chauncey Billups acknowledged the difficulty in containing Dallas, especially when compounded by turnovers leading to easy transition points for the Mavericks.

The game also saw some contentious moments, including the ejection of Portland rookie Duop Reath for a flagrant-2 foul after catching Josh Green with an elbow.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks continue their homestand with another game against Portland on Friday, followed by two consecutive games against the New Orleans Pelicans. The upcoming games present an opportunity for Dallas to build on this strong performance and solidify their position in the conference standings.

The Rockets’ 38-25 advantage in the quarter set the stage for their victory, with VanVleet’s defensive effort at the buzzer being a standout moment.

Looking ahead, the Nets will host Oklahoma City, hoping to break their losing streak, while the Rockets will continue their homestand against Minnesota, both games scheduled for Friday night. Toronto’s early lead proved to be just enough cushion to secure the win, despite Memphis’ late surge, characterized by improved shooting accuracy and a more aggressive approach.

Rajakovic acknowledged the Raptors’ loss of control in the fourth quarter, pointing to execution issues that nearly cost them the game.

Looking ahead, the Raptors continue their six-game road trip with a game against Sacramento, while the Grizzlies embark on a three-game road journey, starting with the Los Angeles Lakers. Both teams, currently below the playoff threshold in their respective conferences, will be keen to build on their recent performances as they push for a spot in the postseason.

Williamson Leads Pelicans to Victory Over Timberwolves

CJ McCollum contributed 24 points, while Brandon Ingram added 19, helping the Pelicans pull away in the second half. Fresh off a win against Brooklyn, where Williamson and Ingram played less than 30 minutes, the Pelicans maintained their momentum on the road, shooting an impressive 55.6% from the field. The duo of Williamson and Ingram was particularly effective, combining for an 18 of 26 shooting performance.

Williamson highlighted the team’s defensive focus, which he believes has been pivotal in enhancing their offense, providing more space for isolation plays. The Pelicans’ cohesive effort on both ends of the court was evident in their dominating performance.

The Timberwolves, led by Anthony Edwards with 35 points and Karl-Anthony Towns with 22, faced a tough challenge. This loss marked their first consecutive defeat of the season and only their second loss at home, moving their home record to 14-2. The Timberwolves struggled with efficiency, shooting just 38.7% through three quarters and committing 13 turnovers, which the Pelicans converted into 16 points.

Edwards emphasized the team’s responsibility to execute the game plan and the need for increased effort, underscoring the team’s self-awareness in addressing their shortcomings.

The Pelicans’ decisive run in the late first half, particularly credited to Ingram’s performance, set the tone for the game. Their lead expanded to 24 points in the third quarter, showcasing their dominance.

Despite a late push by OKC, including another basket from Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder fell short as Isaiah Joe’s last-second 3-pointer missed the mark.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged his team’s struggle against the Hawks’ play style, conceding that Atlanta outplayed them. Despite the loss, the Thunder remain strong contenders in the Western Conference.

For the Hawks, who have had a challenging home record of 5-9, this victory could be a significant turning point. With the majority of their January games at home, they aim to build momentum starting with this win.

Johnson’s impact was felt not just in scoring but also defensively, achieving a career-high four steals. His second-quarter performance, including a memorable dunk over 7-foot-1 Chet Holmgren, was a key factor in Atlanta’s dominant first half, where they led 76-59.

The Thunder’s schedule, including back-to-back games and travel fatigue, seemed to impact their start, as they missed their initial seven shots. Meanwhile, the Hawks capitalized on their fast-paced play, matching their season-high for fast-break points in a half.

Both teams are looking ahead to their next games, with the Thunder set to face the Brooklyn Nets and the Hawks visiting the Indiana Pacers on Friday. As the season progresses, this game will stand out as a testament to the Hawks’ offensive capabilities and resilience, and a reminder of the Thunder’s potential despite the setback.
