ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Magic demonstrated resilience and tactical brilliance in their 104-94 triumph over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night. Rookie sensation Paolo Banchero led the charge with an impressive double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Franz Wagner contributed 19 points in a well-rounded team effort.
The Cavaliers, despite a stellar 36-point performance from Darius Garland, faltered notably in the third quarter, managing only 15 points as they struggled to find the basket. This quarter proved decisive, as the Magic capitalized on Cleveland’s offensive woes. Donovan Mitchell’s 22 points were not enough to salvage the game for the Cavaliers, who had previously enjoyed a four-game winning streak on the road.
Orlando’s Goga Bitadze added 15 points, highlighting the depth in the Magic’s roster. The victory was a statement for Orlando, particularly after a recent defeat against Cleveland, where their three-point shooting was lackluster. This time, although shooting 7-for-26 from beyond the arc, they outperformed the Cavaliers, who had a dismal 9 of 40 three-point attempts and an overall field goal percentage of 35.3%.
Jalen Suggs, with 12 points, played a critical role in defensively containing Garland and Mitchell, while Banchero showed resilience by returning to the court after spraining his ankle in the third quarter.
The first half was closely contested, with Cleveland leading 54-51, thanks in large part to Garland’s 19 points. However, the Magic took control in the third quarter, with Banchero, Wagner, and Bitadze spearheading a crucial 12-0 run that gave them a 76-65 lead. The Cavaliers’ woes were compounded when Jarrett Allen, filling in for the injured Evan Mobley, fouled out early in the fourth quarter, leaving them vulnerable in the front court.
Cleveland attempted a late comeback in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 99-94, but the Magic held firm. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff of the Cavaliers acknowledged the shortfall in shot-making as a key factor in their defeat.
The Magic’s Joe Ingles, who scored 12 points in the first half, also showed determination by returning to the game after spraining his ankle in the third quarter.
Looking ahead, the Cavaliers face a quick turnaround as they visit Boston on Tuesday night, while the Magic will also play the Celtics in Boston on Friday.
