DETROIT: The Indiana Pacers emerged victorious in a high-scoring affair against the Detroit Pistons, winning 131-123 on Monday night. Rookie Bennedict Mathurin spearheaded the Pacers’ offense with a remarkable 30-point performance, marking the Pistons’ 20th consecutive loss, a distressing franchise record.

Tyrese Haliburton, another key contributor for Indiana, showcased his playmaking abilities with 14 points and 16 assists. The Pacers, rebounding from their 123-109 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA In-Season Tournament final, displayed a commendable level of focus and determination. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle lauded his team’s composure and aggression, especially considering the emotional and physical toll of the recent tournament.

The Pistons’ unprecedented losing streak, the longest in their history within a single season, equaled the NBA’s longest streak since the Houston Rockets’ similar run in the 2020-21 season. Despite this, Pistons coach Monty Williams saw positive growth and development in the team’s performance, emphasizing the need to build upon these aspects.

Miles Turner added significant firepower to the Pacers’ offense with 23 points, while Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 23 points, and Ausar Thompson contributed 20. Indiana had established a 98-93 lead by the start of the fourth quarter. The quarter saw both teams effectively attacking the basket, with Aaron Nesmith’s 3-pointer aiding the Pacers in extending their lead.

Turner’s three-point play and Haliburton’s six consecutive points in the latter part of the quarter solidified Indiana’s control, pushing the lead to 129-114 with just over three minutes left. Detroit’s offensive struggles were evident as they missed all their three-point attempts and failed to secure offensive rebounds in the quarter.

Coach Carlisle attributed Indiana’s success to their ability to maintain possession, especially in crucial moments of the game. Mathurin’s 18 first-half points, including a pivotal role in a 9-0 run, were instrumental in giving the Pacers an edge. Coach Williams of the Pistons acknowledged the impact of the Pacers’ late first-half surge, noting it as a learning experience for his team.

Looking ahead, the Pacers face a challenging encounter against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, while the Pistons, seeking to break their losing streak, will host the Philadelphia 76ers on the same day.

This match serves as a stark reminder of the highs and lows of professional basketball, with the Pacers finding a path to recovery after a recent setback and the Pistons grappling with a historically significant losing streak.
