HOUSTON — The Houston Texans, led by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, are on the cusp of a playoff berth following a commanding 26-3 win over the Tennessee Titans. This victory brings Houston one step closer to the postseason, a remarkable turnaround from their three-win season last year.

Selected with the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft, Stroud has exceeded expectations, propelling the Texans to a 9-7 record. His performance in Sunday’s game, throwing for 213 yards and a touchdown, marked his return from a concussion and kept the Texans in contention for the AFC South title.

Coach DeMeco Ryans praised Stroud’s impact, noting that the quarterback elevates the entire team’s confidence. Stroud’s 21st touchdown pass of the season contributed to a 17-point lead at halftime, aided by a defensive touchdown from Sheldon Rankins.

The Titans (5-11), with rookie quarterback Will Levis starting, struggled to gain momentum. Levis sustained a foot injury during the game, leading to Ryan Tannehill taking over. Despite Tannehill’s efforts, the Titans couldn’t find the end zone against a robust Texans defense.

Tennessee’s coach Mike Vrabel expressed the need for improvement across all aspects of the team’s play. The Titans’ loss to Houston marked their second defeat to the Texans in three weeks.

The Texans extended their lead in the third quarter and effectively shut down the Titans’ offense, highlighted by Houston’s defensive prowess. The Texans’ Will Anderson, another standout rookie, made a significant impact with sacks on consecutive plays, showcasing the team’s defensive strength.

The game also saw a reunion with former Texans star DeAndre Hopkins, now with the Titans, who made seven receptions for 72 yards. However, Derrick Henry, a key player for Tennessee, was limited to 42 yards on 12 carries.

Injuries were a concern for both teams, with key players on each side leaving the game due to various ailments.

Looking ahead, the Texans face a crucial matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, where a victory would secure their playoff spot. The Titans will conclude their season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
