MILAN, ITALY – In a landmark transfer, Canadian international Tajon Buchanan has made a significant leap in his professional soccer career by joining Serie A leaders Inter Milan from Belgian side Club Brugge.

The 24-year-old winger/wingback’s move to one of Italy’s most illustrious teams was confirmed on Friday, with the transfer fee reported to be around $7.6 million, plus additional add-ons. This transfer follows Buchanan’s earlier move from the New England Revolution to Club Brugge for $7 million, along with a 10% sell-on fee, ensuring a financial return for the Revolution.

Buchanan’s journey began in the MLS with the New England Revolution, who selected him ninth overall in the first round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft from Syracuse University. He quickly developed into a key player for the Revolution, contributing significantly to their Supporters’ Shield-winning campaign in 2021 and earning a spot in the MLS Best XI. His tenure with the Revolution ended with an impressive 12 goals and 11 assists in 67 games across all competitions.

At Club Brugge, Buchanan continued his upward trajectory, scoring 5 goals and providing 12 assists in 67 games across all competitions. Internationally, Buchanan has been a regular for Canada since his debut in June 2021, recording 4 goals and 7 assists in 35 appearances. He played a crucial role in Canada’s historic Qatar 2022 World Cup squad.

Buchanan’s move to Inter Milan is significant not only for his career but also for Canadian soccer, as he becomes the first Canadian player to join a Serie A club. He is expected to vie for a starting position at Inter, particularly in light of Juan Cuadrado’s long-term injury, which has left a gap in manager Simone Inzaghi’s squad.

Inter Milan, currently leading the Serie A race and preparing for a UEFA Champions League Round of 16 series against Atlético Madrid, will undoubtedly benefit from Buchanan’s versatility and talent. Last season, the club won the Coppa Italia and was the runner-up in the Champions League final against Manchester City. Buchanan’s addition is a strategic move for Inter, aiming to bolster their squad for continued success in both domestic and European competitions.
