LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Clippers extended their winning streak to four games with a 132-127 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night. Led by Kawhi Leonard’s 34 points, the Clippers continued their strong form, improving to 9-3 since breaking a season-worst six-game losing streak.
Paul George and James Harden were also key contributors for the Clippers. George finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, while Harden added 20 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Ivica Zubac’s 18 points further bolstered the Clippers’ offense.
Coach Tyronn Lue praised Leonard’s performance, particularly noting his improved health and developing rhythm with teammates George and Harden.
The Trail Blazers, hampered by the absence of Deandre Ayton and Malcolm Brogdon due to right knee soreness, struggled to contain the Clippers. Anfernee Simons led Portland with a season-high 38 points, and rookie Shaedon Sharpe added 27 points. Despite their efforts, the Blazers fell to an 0-8 road record against Western Conference teams.
Simons, who recently returned from an 18-game absence due to injury, was flawless from the free-throw line and made a career-high 13 free throws. The Blazers also excelled from the three-point line, making a season-high 19 three-pointers.
Despite the loss, Blazers coach Chauncey Billups commended his team’s fighting spirit, saying, “We played good, man. We just keep scrapping no matter what.”
The game saw multiple lead changes in the fourth quarter, with the Blazers briefly taking the lead. However, clutch free throws by Terance Mann and Leonard, along with key baskets by George, helped the Clippers secure the win. Leonard remained focused on the team’s overall performance, expressing satisfaction with the Clippers’ current rhythm.
The high-scoring third quarter was pivotal, with the Clippers ending on a 12-5 run to take a 105-99 lead. Despite the Blazers’ impressive three-point shooting in the quarter, the Clippers managed to regain control, thanks in part to Russell Westbrook’s seven straight points.
Portland managed to erase a double-digit deficit in the second quarter and briefly took the lead, but George’s basket gave the Clippers a narrow lead at halftime. The Clippers had started strong, shooting 79% in the first quarter.
Harden’s one-handed dunk in the third, his first since joining the Clippers, was a highlight, with the veteran guard reminding everyone, “I can still dunk.”
Billups reflected on the team-building process, acknowledging the challenges but maintaining a focus on winning.
Looking ahead, the Trail Blazers return home to host the Utah Jazz in a five-game homestand, while the Clippers host the Sacramento Kings in a back-to-back matchup.
This victory for the Clippers showcased their offensive depth and resilience, while the Trail Blazers, despite the setback, displayed promising individual performances and a fighting spirit.
