IWGA Media Officer Hermann Kewitz steps down after 15 years

Hermann Kewitz retired from his Media Officer duties at the IWGA in December 2023. Kewitz started his journey with The World Games at the 7th edition of The World Games in Duisburg (GER) in 2005, before joining the IWGA in 2009 to work alongside IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow.

The Journalism graduate from the University of Dortmund in Germany steps down after a highly fulfilling career with the IWGA. In addition to his media expertise, Kewitz was responsible for TWG’s archives and publications issued by the IWGA. The IWGA would like to express its deepest gratitude to Hermann Kewitz for his commitment and valuable contribution. The legacy of his work will benefit the IWGA in the long term and it will remain impossible to duplicate.

Joachim Gossow praised long-serving Kewitz for his accomplishments during his time with the IWGA: “Hermann’s leadership in all media matters has greatly improved our visibility globally. His expertise and relentless hard work have been instrumental in the success of our event. We sincerely thank Hermann and wish him all the best for the next chapter of his life.”

“It has been an honour and a pleasure to work for The World Games for so many years (and five editions). It is a great event because it really showcases the athletes on the centre stage. Giving them the attention they deserve for their outstanding performances has always motivated me. Even though I no longer work for the IWGA, I will always feel part of The World Games family. Because that’s the feeling The World Games has always given me: to be part of a big family in the world of sport,” said Kewitz.

“I would like to thank our President José Perurena, my CEO and friend Joachim Gossow and my colleagues in the small but smart IWGA team for giving me this feeling. I hope my successor Camille enjoys the challenge as much as I always have. But nothing can really go wrong with this: The World Games grabs everyone who gets in touch with it,” added Kewitz.

Camille Bastin has joined the IWGA in January 2024 as the new Media and Communication Manager. With an extensive background in Olympic sports, Camille will develop, implement and oversee communication and media relations activities within the IWGA. Her career path to date has led her to work for World Aquatics (formerly the International Swimming Federation) as well as the London based PR and Sport Communications consultancy Jon Tibbs Associates. Camille also has experience with sponsors, as she was based in the Omega Press Office during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Camille has participated in four Olympic Games and eight World Championships, including those in Aquatics and Volleyball. Her first edition of The World Games will be the 12th edition in 2025 in Chengdu (CHN).

‘The Pro Kabaddi League has changed many lives’: Kabaddi Legends Recount 1000-match PKL journey

JAIPUR, 15th January 2024: The Pro Kabaddi League felicitated five legends of the sport – Anup Kumar, Dharmaraj Cheralathan, Ajay Thakur, Manjeet Chhillar and Rishank Devadiga ahead of the historic 1000th Pro Kabaddi League match in Jaipur on Monday. The legends received a customised memento for their incredible contribution to the Pro Kabaddi League over the last 10 seasons.

When asked about the journey of PKL from Match 1 to Match 1000, Dharmaraj Cheralathan said, “The Pro Kabaddi League’s journey has been magnificent. Many lives have changed because of the Pro Kabaddi League and many lives will change in the future as well. I hope that the players become even more fitter in the future and have very long careers.”

Manjeet Chhillar expressed that he had plans to play in the tenth season as well, “Ajay had told me that we would play the tenth season, but he retired before me. Had he continued to play then we would have probably played in this season. I hope that we complete one lakh Pro Kabaddi League matches one day then I’ll be even happier. I wish that kabaddi becomes the number one sport in terms of viewership in the future.”

When asked about how much the game has changed since the first-ever PKL match in 2014, Anup Kumar said, “The game has become very fast now. And now the coaches have a lot of players to choose from in their teams. There’s a backup for each of the players in each of the teams in the Pro Kabaddi League. And the players get a lot of opportunities to show their mettle as well.”

Speaking on the innovative rules implemented in the Pro Kabaddi League over the years, Ajay Thakur said, “The 30-second raid rule has been a great innovation in the game. Kabaddi is an injury-prone game so it’s really good that that raids have a time limit of 30 seconds. If there was no time limit then the players wouldn’t be able to have long careers.”

Meanwhile, Rishank Devadiga expressed his excitement ahead of the 1000th PKL match, “I am really happy to see that the Pro Kabaddi League has reached its 1000th match. The game has grown leaps and bounds through PKL over the last 10 seasons. It’s been really nice to be on the journey with PKL right from Season 1.”

The Bengal Warriors are taking on the Bengaluru Bulls in the 1000th PKL match, while, the Jaipur Pink Panthers will face off against U Mumba in the next match of the day.

Mumbai City FC Confident Ahead Of Second Game Against Punjab FC in Kalinga Super Cup

Bhubaneshwar, 15th January, 2024: Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC kicked off their Kalinga Super Cup 2024 campaign with a 2-1 win against I-League side Gokulam Kerala and have Punjab FC in their sights in their second Group C game on 16th January.
The Islanders began their journey with a performance to remember, coming from behind to win 2-1 against a formidable Gokulam Kerala team. For the new head coach Peter Kratky, these are still early days and he is well aware of the challenges opposition teams can put forth.
“Punjab will be a little bit of a different opponent in comparison to Gokulam Kerala. However, we have a squad who can perform against any team. I believe in the players we have. Punjab is a very good team with experienced players on the park, and are well organised. We have to be respectful and ready for their quality, but we must also stick to the way we want to play. I am looking forward to the game, it will be an exciting game. We are not afraid of anyone, and we want to win this game,” Kratky said.
Due to the ongoing AFC Asian Cup in Qatar, Mumbai City FC, like most other clubs, do not have a full squad available to pick from. Nonetheless, Kratky and the team management aren’t very worried about it.
“I was very pleased with what I saw specially with Franklin (Nazareth), Nathan (Rodrigues), and Sanjeev (Stalin) and the others, basically all of the young players who came in, and Ayush (Chhikara) also, who scored a goal. There is a lot of room to improve but we will try to help them and make sure the performances are still going up. But again, I was very pleased with what I saw, and hopefully they keep working hard, and keep asking more questions for the future selections,” the coach added.
A win for the Mumbai City FC side will take them one step closer to the semifinal of the 2024 Kalinga Super Cup and defender Nathan Rodrigues, who made his first start for Mumbai City against Gokulam Kerala, is keen to help his side take that huge step forward. Nathan said, “It was a tough game. We were a goal down but we fought to win 2-1. The team worked very hard on the pitch and we deserved to win.”
“It is important for us to get a win on Tuesday against Punjab FC, and we hope we keep our momentum going as well. A win will take us closer to the qualification for the semi final,” Nathan added.

85th Cadet and Junior National TT-Preview

Indore, January 15: The boys from the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board Academy (PSPB-A) were nowhere in the picture in the last season. But just before the team draw for the Under-15 Boys in the 85th UTT Cadet and Sub-Junior National Table Tennis Championships, one finds PSPBA pitchforked to the top position of Group A.

The team events, beginning at the Abhay Prashal Indoor Stadium tomorrow, the PSPBA boys start as the favourites for the team title. But the top seed slot and the points they collected this season cannot alone be the reason for such a tag. PSPBA, ever since it relocated itself from Ajmer, has grown in stature, and their boys have shown improvements to hit the headlines. The onus is on Arya Sarthak, Rushikesh Jagtap, Sahil Rawat and Ronald Sarkar to justify the top billing.

However, West Bengal, the top team in the second group, is equally a tough nut to crack. Soham Mukherjee, Debraj Bhattacharjee, Rupam Sardar and Aditya Das will go all out to prove their mettle. Incidentally, they will have a tough time against another team, the National Centre of Excellence, Kolkata, whose boys did a fantastic job to be among the medals in the Junior and Youth Nationals team event in Kolkata.

And Karnataka has a good young crop of Dinesh Teshub, Naveen Aamav, Atharva Nawarange and Arya Jain. They can challenge the best attack on a given day. But what is surprising is that Tamil Nadu, who won the title in Alappuzha last season on the strength of P.B. Abhinand are relegated to the fifth group, based on the rankings of two of their top players. Maharashtra has a mix-match of newcomers, and they could also pose threats to the top contenders.

In other words, of the 31 teams vying for top honours and the coveted team trophy, a host of the squads in the fray will rely on the newest entrants who have graduated from Under-13 to make it to their respective squads.

With the boys who helped the team ascend the podium in the previous edition having moved to a higher age category, it is always foolhardy to predict the winners. But the individuals will have a say when the singles get underway, along with the Under-13 and Under-11 Boys. The next four days may spring up a surprise or two, making the nationals worthy for many.

Competition Manager N. Ganeshan said T.G. Upadhaya, as referee for the championships, will have support from his deputies, Mangesh Mopker and K.R. Manjunatha. But they all will rely on 50 other technical officials, including Blue Badge and International umpires.

Ganeshan also said Stag equipment, including flooring, tables, and balls, will be used during the two-leg championships, hosted by the Madhya Pradesh Table Tennis Association.

Akshay Kumar and Bengal Warriors Congratulate PKL Family on Achieving 1000th Match Milestone

Jaipur, 15th January, 2024: The Bengal Warriors, who are captained by the inimitable Maninder Singh, have been among the strongest pillars of the Pro Kabaddi League, who have had a storied journey over the last decade. Now, in their 10th season, the Pro Kabaddi League, has also reached the milestone of 1000 matches.

The 1000th match of the PKL will see the Bengaluru Bulls come up against an in-form Bengal Warriors. Both sides have been part of the decade long journey of the PKL so far, and are among the foremost pillars of strength for the sport.

While the Bengaluru Bulls won Season 6 of the PKL, the tournament’s title travelled to the Bengal Warriors camp in the next season. Meanwhile, the Patna Pirates and the Jaipur Pink Panthers are among the most decorated teams in the mix.

Bengal Warriors’ Captain Maninder Singh, who was part of the first-ever PKL match between U Mumba and Jaipur Pink Panthers said, “It feels really great that the 1000th PKL match will be played on Monday. I played for Jaipur in the first match and will play the 1000th match in Jaipur, so what could be better than that. Kabaddi is a very injury-prone sport so I feel really happy to be around the league for 1000 matches.”

The raider further added, “My journey has been really good and it feels great to have a long career. I am trying to maintain my fitness and keep playing for as long as I can. The game has become very fast now as compared to the first game. There were no Do or Die raids in the first season so if a team took a big lead then its opponents found it difficult to make comebacks in the matches. So innovative rules such as Do or Die raids have made the game very interesting.”

Speaking on the occasion, Bengal Warriors’ Co-Owner Akshay Kumar said, “Here’s congratulating the Bengal Warriors as they play the 1000th PKL match. It has been a remarkable journey so far. Wishing the best to my Warriors, and the league.”

“The journey of the past decade has been immense, and we at the Bengal Warriors could not be happier that we were there in the first year, and now in the 1000th game. It is a matter of immense pride for the Indian sporting fraternity, and for us at Capri Sports and Bengal Warriors, as we continue nurture the Warrior spirit. We would like to congratulate everyone involved, and wish the PKL and the other stakeholders and hope to see more than 10,000 games being played eventually,” said Jinisha Sharma, Director – Capri Sports.

“This is a moment that calls for a massive celebration for the sport of Kabaddi, and we hope to play our part in it,” she added.

Preview: Australia, Sri Lanka join upbeat African challengers in Group C

Three-time champions Australia are joined by Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Namibia to make up Group C of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024.

The first game in the group will take place between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe on 22 January. All the games will be played in Kimberley.

Here we take a look at the four teams, their make-up, and some of the future stars to look out for.

Australia

Australia are the second-most successful side in the U19 Men’s CWC after India. Their first success came in the inaugural edition of the tournament way back in 1988, when as hosts of the Youth World Cup, they beat Pakistan by five wickets.

Australia’s second triumph came in 2002  when Cameron White led them to a win in New Zealand. Their neighbouring country proved to be a happy hunting ground yet again in 2010 when Josh Hazlewood’s splendid 4/30 helped Mitchell Marsh’s team win the final against Pakistan by 25 runs.

The young Australians featured in a fully-fledged tour of England late in 2023. The tour was successful on all counts, with the side winning series in all three formats.

Squad

Lachlan Aitken, Charlie Anderson, Harkirat Bajwa, Mahli Beardman, Tom Campbell, Harry Dixon, Ryan Hicks, Sam Konstas, Rafael MacMillan, Aidan O’Connor, Harjas Singh, Tom Straker, Callum Vidler, Corey Wasley, Hugh Weibgen.

Fixtures

22 January: v Namibia, Kimberley
25 January: v Zimbabwe, Kimberley
28 January: v Sri Lanka, Kimberley

Watch out for

Harry Dixon

Harry Dixon, who has been likened to David Warner and already has a Big Bash League contract to his name, will be the player to watch out for from Australia. He was a prominent run-getter during Australia’s U19 tour of England, scoring a hundred in both the Youth Tests, finishing with 406 runs in two games.

The batter had his brush with senior cricket in December when he featured for Victoria XI against Pakistan. The aggressive southpaw can help give Australia some amazing starts with his fireworks.

What they said

Hugh Weiben, Australia captain: “We are quite a balanced side and all our different playing styles complement each other really well. Everyone also knows their role really well and we have the confidence in one another that any one one of us can get the job done with either the bat, ball or in the field.”

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka are yet to lift the U19 Men’s CWC trophy but have left their mark on the tournament over the years. They made the final once in 2000, where they lost to Mohammed Kaif’s India by six wickets. Their solitary success at this event has come in the previous format, winning the Plate Finals twice, in 2012 against Afghanistan and in 2018 against the West Indies.

Some of the prominent names to have played in the U19 World Cups before making their name at the international level include Sanath Jayasuriya, Angelo Mathews, Kusal Perera, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage.

The current Sri Lanka U19s have featured in a triangular series against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in 2023, have hosted West Indies, and toured Pakistan in the leadup to the World Cup. The side recently played in the U19 Asia Cup but failed to make it to the knockout stage. Still, with practice aplenty, the young Lankans will look to set the tournament alight.

Squad

Sineth Jayawardena (c), Pulindu Perera, Hirun Kapurubandara, Ravishan Nethsara, Rusanda Gamage, Sharujan Shanmuganathan, Dinura Kalupahana, Malsha Tharupathi, Vishva Lahiru, Garuka Sanketh, Duvindu Ranatunga, Ruvishan Perera, Supun Waduge, Vihas Thewmika, Vishen Halambage.

Travelling Reserves: Dinuka Tennakoon, Hiran Jayasundara.

Fixtures

21 January: v Zimbabwe, Kimberley
24 January: v Namibia, Kimberley
28 January: v Australia, Kimberley

Watch out for

Malsha Tharupathi

In a land known for its finger spinners, Malsha Tharupathi is a rising leg-break bowler with a knack for handy contributions with the willow. The bowling all-rounder has already made his mark in the Sri Lanka domestic circuit, with 10 List A wickets at an average of 21.9, and 18 T20 wickets for merely 11.27.

He played a crucial role in Sri Lanka U19’s ODI series win over Pakistan during their tour of the country in October, taking seven wickets at an average of 18.71. He also picked five wickets at an average of 20 in the U19 Asia Cup in December.

A leg-spinning all-rounder, Tharupathi seems to be following up in the footsteps of his Richmond College alum Wanindu Hasaranga. Sri Lanka U19s will hope that the youngster can emulate Hasaranga’s magical touch to lift their fortunes in the tournament.

What they said

Sineth Jayawardena, Sri Lanka captain: “As a unit, we are always together, and as the captain, I think that’s our main strength. Even though we have downfalls, we have always made comebacks.”

Zimbabwe

An advantage of the tournament being shifted to South Africa is that Zimbabwe will be playing in familiar conditions. Zimbabwe shone in the tournament in the 2000s, winning the Plate Final in 2002, and going beyond the group stage in 2004 and 2006. They’ve defeated the likes of Australia, New Zealand, and England in the past.

Individual performers have shone in the U19 World Cup for the African nation. The most prominent of these was Tatenda Taibu, who won the Player of the Tournament award for his 250 runs and 12 wickets in the 2002 edition.

Zimbabwe prepared for the upcoming U19 World Cup with a two-match series against Ireland which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Squad

Nathaniel Hlabangana, Panashe Taruvinga, Ronak Patel, Campbell MacMillan, Ryan Kamwemba, Brendon Sunguro, Calton Takawira, Matthew Schonken (c), Anesu Kamuriwo, Newman Nyamhuri, Mashford Shungu, Kohl Eksteen, Panashe Gwatiringa, Shaun Dzakatira, Munashe Chimusoro.

Fixtures

21 January: v Sri Lanka, Kimberley
25 January: v Australia, Kimberley
27 January: v Namibia, Kimberley

Watch out for

Panashe Taruvinga

Along with his skipper Matthew Schonken, Panashe Taruvinga will be one of the few players from the previous edition of the tournament to feature in the U19 Men’s CWC 2024 . In 2022, the 16-year-old Taruvinga had scored 39 runs in his two outings.

With age, the wicketkeeper-batter has gained experience and has shown his brilliance in the club circuits of Zimbabwe. He recently played two handy knocks against the Ireland U19s. In Andy Flower, Taibu, and Brendan Taylor, the Chevrons have produced some brilliant keeper-batters, and Taruvinga has a golden opportunity to put his name forward as a reliable option for the future.

What they said

Matthew Schonken, Zimbabwe captain: “This is a one-time experience for most of us and is a great start to everyone’s cricket career, we are hoping that we all get a good kick start into the start of our futures ahead of us.”

Namibia

This will be Namibia’s 10th appearance in the tournament. An up-and-coming side in the international circuit, Namibia made their first appearance in the competition way back in 1998.

To date, the 2016 edition has been the most successful one for the African side. They beat Scotland by a comfortable margin in the group stage, before stunning neighbours South Africa by two wickets to secure a place in the Quarter-Finals.

Though they lost to India by 197 runs, they finished seventh, thus ensuring their best-ever U19 World Cup outing.

Namibia qualified in the tournament on the back of a near-perfect run in the Africa Division- 1 Qualifier for the U19 World Cup. They won four games of the five games with the match against Uganda ending without a result.

Squad

Alex Volschenk (c), Gerhard Janse van Rensburg, Hansie de Villiers, JW Visagie, Ben Brassell, Jack Brassell, Henry van Wyk, Zacheo van Vuuren, Nico Pieters, Faf du Plessis, Woutie Niehaus, PD Blignaut, Hanro Badenhorst, Junior Kariata, Ryan Moffett.

Fixtures

22 January: v Australia, Kimberley
24 January: v Sri Lanka, Kimberley
27 January: v Zimbabwe, Kimberley

Watch out for

Gerhard Janse van Rensburg

Gerhard Janse van Rensburg is already sparring with the big boys and has featured in the senior side’s encounters against Uganda (albeit in games without official status) and the Karnataka domestic team from India.

Though a wicketkeeper-batter, Janse van Rensburg can also roll his arm over and pick crucial wickets for the side. So other than adding solidity to the middle-order of the Eagles, his presence guarantees a true all-round asset in the field.

What they said

Alexander Volschenk, Namibia captain: “During the qualifiers, our team bonded like a band of brothers, playing with each other, for each other. No one is bigger than the team.”

Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2024: Lakshya, Prannoy highlight crucial role of Super 750 status in race to Paris

A total of 247 players from 23 countries including international stars Vitidsarn, Axelsen, Intanon and Yamaguchi will headline the prestigious tournament; Japan has fielded the largest contingent of 37 shuttlers

New Delhi, January 15, 2024: Asian Games bronze medallist HS Prannoy and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen emphasised the significance of the Super 750 status of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2024 and how the additional points secured in the tournament will play a crucial role in the Paris Olympics qualification.

Elevated from the Super 500 to the Super 750 status last year, the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2024, organised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), is set to take place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from January 16-21, 2024.

“Over the last decade India has emerged as one of the powerhouses of the sport. Events like the Yonex-Sunrise India Open have had a key role in this phenomenon, as upcoming players and fans get inspired by watching the best players up close. This year there is added excitement as the clock ticks closer to Paris 2024. I wish all involved the best of luck in what will no doubt be a super week on the HSBC BWF World Tour,” said BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer.

The prestigious tournament will provide Indian players with the opportunity to accumulate significantly higher ranking points on their home turf, thereby enhancing their quest for qualification for the Paris Olympics.

“The Yonex-Sunrise India Open has long stood as a legacy tournament for Indian Badminton. Being a defining ground for milestone victories and career transformative moments resulting in dreams coming true, this championship has always played a strong platform and breeding ground for future champions. As we prepare to witness the biggest badminton show in India, the electrifying atmosphere and intense competition promise to make the event an unforgettable spectacle for fans from across the country who brave the weather to be there on all seven days,” remarked BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra.

The 2023 World Championships bronze medallist Prannoy, currently ranked 8th in the Race to Paris rankings, will be aiming to climb higher in the rankings as he kicks off his campaign against Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.

Highlighting the high stakes involved in the tournament, HS Prannoy commented, “The Yonex-Sunrise India Open holds immense significance for me but this year is extra special as it will be providing a pedestal to improve my ranking ahead of the summer Olympics. Playing on home soil will be an added boost, and the support of our fans adds an extra layer of motivation.”

As per the Paris Olympics qualification regulations, India can have two men’s singles players in the Top-16 by April 30, 2024.

Currently ranked 17th in the Race to Paris rankings, Sen who won the Yonex-Sunrise India Open in 2022, will commence his campaign against the emerging talent Priyanshu Rawat, with an eye on securing the coveted second spot.

“Winning the Yonex-Sunrise India Open in 2022 has been a cornerstone in shaping my career, and I anticipate a similar influential role of the tournament in the context of Paris qualifications. “I am thrilled to return to the Yonex-Sunrise India Open as the defending champion. The competition promises to be fierce this time but I am ready to showcase my best game and give my all on the court once again,” expressed Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

All the shuttlers inside the current top 10 of the men’s singles BWF World Rankings including top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, former World Champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, and Asian Games 2022 bronze medallist Kodai Naraoka of Japan, will take the stage.

In the women’s singles category, three-time champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and the Japanese duo of two-time World Champion Akane Yamaguchi and Rio Olympics bronze medallist Nozomi Okuhara, are set to compete.

World Curling launches brand refresh

Perth, Scotland – The launch of the World Curling rebrand and new website arrives as one of the cornerstone components of the six “Big Ideas” defined by the World Curling Board in January 2023.

“The new identity is a modern and dynamic brand for our sport,” said World Curling President, Beau Welling. “We are excited to be showcasing our sport and brand to increasingly younger and more diverse audiences by reaching them through our engaging digital platforms.

“The brand identity refresh is about more than just a new logo. It’s an opportunity to redefine our vision for the sport and share our values to the wider world as we continue to develop as a modern and inclusive community.

“The brand was developed, in collaboration with our partners, WePlay, to be flexible and allow us to consolidate the number of projects managed by World Curling under one unified brand umbrella. This refresh is a fundamental first step in the exciting journey our organisation and sport is undertaking.”

The new World Curling logo is the embodiment of the core aspects of the sport, crafted with the two fundamental elements of curling. The outer circle draws inspiration from the rotation of a stone, while the internal element is designed to emulate the sweeping motion on ice.

Together the two elements work to create a sense of forward movement, alluding to the future of World Curling as we continue to foster the development, values and community of our unique sport.

The new brand identity launches alongside a modern website and will continue to roll out over the coming months, with the changes to the digital assets and social media channels being updated as a priority.

Philip Chan scores 1000th goal of AFC Asian Cup

A significant milestone was reached in AFC Asian Cup™ history on Sunday evening when the showpiece tournament of Asia witnessed its 1000th goal at the Khalifa International Stadium.

The landmark strike was scored by Philip Chan for Hong Kong, China in the 49th minute to draw them level against the United Arab Emirates in the Group C encounter at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™, which ended 3-1 to the West Asians.

Serendipitously, Chan’s goal came over 67 years on from the first ever goal in tournament history – scored by compatriot Au Chi Yin, who etched his name into the annals of the AFC Asian Cup™ after 12 minutes in the opener by breaking the deadlock at Government Stadium on 1 September 1956 in front of 30,000 spectators. Au would add a second for the hosts, thereby scoring the first ever brace in the competition’s history as well, although they were eventually defeated 3-2.

Chan’s opportunistic finish was the 13th goal of the current edition and made him the ninth player from Hong Kong, China to score in the Continental flagship, with their fourth involvement ending a 56-year absence since their previous participation in 1968.

The overall goal tally at the AFC Asian Cup™ (excluding qualifiers) would reach triple digits for the first time at the 1972 edition. Korea Republic legend Lee Hoe-taik grabbed their second in the 59th minute against Cambodia (then Khmer Republic), which was the 100th goal, en-route to a 4-1 win in Group B at the National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on 10 May.

The turn of the millennium brought about the 500th goal in Asia’s crown jewel. Attacking midfielder Qi Hong drew China PR level at 1-1 against Japan in their Semi-final clash on 26 October at the Sports City Stadium in Beirut, with the Samurai Blue going on to prevail 3-2 to advance to the Final, where they defeated Saudi Arabia to lift the 2000 AFC Asian Cup™.

The magical 1000 figure moved into clearer view after the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019™, which finished with a remarkable 130 goals – the first time that any edition had broken the 100-goal mark – and saw the all-time total surge to 987.

Reigning champions Qatar made it 990 with their 3-0 victory over Lebanon on Friday evening, where Almoez Ali scored his 10th AFC Asian Cup™ goal to draw level with former Korea Republic forward Lee Dong-gook on the all-time scoring charts – second only to Islamic Republic of Iran icon Ali Daei’s 14.

With 44 matches left to play in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™, passionate fans of Asian football can certainly look forward to many more goals in the tournament.

Chicago Fire Sign Danish Center Back Tobias Salquist

Chicago Fire FC has announced the signing of Danish center back Tobias Salquist from Silkeborg IF. The 28-year-old defender is under contract with the Major League Soccer club through the 2025 season, with an option for 2026.

Georg Heitz, Fire FC’s sporting director, expressed confidence in Salquist’s abilities, stating, “We have been monitoring Tobias for almost 18 months and are impressed with many of his qualities. Not only do we feel that his technical ability will translate to play in MLS, but he has been a key player for a club that is well-organized and fighting for the top spots in a competitive league.”

Salquist has spent most of his professional career at Silkeborg, where he scored nine goals in 160 games. He has also played for clubs in Norway, Iceland, Belgium, and Denmark. With this move, Salquist joins a Chicago Fire center back group anchored by Rafael Czichos and Carlos Terán. This signing follows the offseason addition of left back Andrew Gutman, who joined from the Colorado Rapids.

The Chicago Fire retained head coach Frank Klopas for the 2024 season and are preparing for their regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Union on February 24. The team is looking to build momentum after last making the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2017. The addition of Salquist is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the team’s defense and overall competitiveness in the upcoming season.

Lions Break Playoff Drought with Dramatic Win Over Rams

The Detroit Lions, led by Jared Goff, broke their 32-year playoff drought with a thrilling 24-23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams at Ford Field. Goff, playing against his former team, threw for a touchdown and made a crucial pass for a first down in the game’s final moments, sealing the win for the Lions.

The Lions, now with a 13-5 record, ended the longest postseason losing streak in NFL history, dating back to a win over Dallas in 1992. This victory marks a significant moment for the franchise and the city, with Goff acknowledging the importance of the win and expressing optimism for the team’s future.

Detroit, the NFC’s No. 3 seed, will host either Tampa Bay or Philadelphia in the divisional round, marking the first time in franchise history they will have two home playoff games. The Rams, finishing the season 10-8, struggled to capitalize on late opportunities, including a failed fourth-down attempt by Matthew Stafford, who was playing against his former team.

Stafford, who led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory after being traded, played with a bandaged hand for most of the game but still managed to throw for 367 yards and two touchdowns. Despite his efforts, the Lions’ defense held strong, denying the Rams a late lead.

Rookie Puka Nacua had a standout performance for the Rams with nine receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown. The Lions’ offense was also powered by contributions from David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, who made key plays throughout the game.

The atmosphere at Ford Field was electric, with the crowd reaching deafening levels to support the Lions. Notable attendees included Detroit legends Eminem, Barry Sanders, and Calvin Johnson. The fans expressed their emotions throughout the game, booing Stafford upon his entrance but rallying behind Goff, who has become a symbol of the team’s resurgence.

The Lions’ victory was not just a win on the scoreboard but a significant emotional triumph for a city and fan base that has long awaited

success in the postseason. Coach Dan Campbell praised the team’s energy and the fans’ support, which played a crucial role in the game.

The Lions’ defense, a key factor in the win, managed to contain the Rams’ offensive threats in critical moments, particularly in the fourth quarter. The game came down to the wire, with Goff’s completion to St. Brown allowing Detroit to run out the clock and secure the historic win.

Injuries did play a part in the game, with the Rams losing key players like Kyren Williams, Tyler Higbee, and Jordan Fuller. The Lions, on the other hand, managed their lineup effectively despite missing some players due to injuries.

The Lions’ victory is a testament to their resilience and growth as a team, promising an exciting future for the franchise. As they prepare for their next playoff game, the team carries the momentum of this historic win and the support of a city that has long awaited a return to postseason glory.

Packers Stun Cowboys in Wild-Card Upset, Jones and Love Shine

The Green Bay Packers delivered a stunning upset against the Dallas Cowboys with a 48-32 victory in the wild-card round, ending Dallas’s 16-game home winning streak. Aaron Jones, a lifelong Cowboys fan, was instrumental in the victory, rushing for three touchdowns, while Jordan Love threw for three scores in his postseason debut. Darnell Savage’s 64-yard interception return for a touchdown further bolstered the Packers’ dominant performance.

Jones, who has now amassed 488 yards in four career games against the Cowboys, expressed his special connection to

Dallas, having grown up idolizing Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys. His performance in Arlington was a full-circle moment for him, especially poignant considering his late father’s support for the team.

The Packers, who entered the game with a 10-8 record, continued their strong form by securing a spot in the divisional round against the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers. Green Bay’s victory was remarkable, considering their late arrival at the stadium due to weather and mechanical issues, which did not deter their focus and execution.

The loss was a significant blow for the No. 2 seed Cowboys (12-6), especially for quarterback

Dak Prescott, who threw two interceptions and then three touchdown passes when the game was essentially out of reach. This defeat adds to Dallas’s playoff woes, as they have not reached an NFC championship game since their last Super Bowl win 28 years ago. The performance raises questions about the future of Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, who lost his playoff opener at home for the second time in three postseasons with the team.

Romeo Doubs had a standout game for the Packers with a career-high 151 receiving yards, contributing significantly to Green Bay’s offense. The Packers maintained their impressive record at AT&T Stadium, never having lost in six visits, including two playoff victories over the Cowboys.

The Packers’ offense was particularly effective, matching their 2010 Super Bowl-winning team for the most points in a playoff game. This was a collective effort, with contributions from various players, including those who stepped up in the absence of Aaron Rodgers. The game ended with the Packers showcasing their potential as a formidable postseason team, while the Cowboys face a period of reflection and potential changes after another disappointing playoff exit.

Squash: Asal and El Sherbini Kick Off New Year in Style with Titles at SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open

Mostafa Asal and Nour El Sherbini claimed the first PSA World Tour titles of 2024, winning their respective finals at the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open.

Asal – the men’s No.2 seed – beat compatriot Mazen Hesham 3-1 in the first final of the day, before El Sherbini saw off Hania El Hammamy 3-0 in another all-Egyptian final.

Both Asal and Hesham had come through tough, five-game matchups in the last four, and it was Asal who made the better start here, capitalising on some unforced errors in the early rallies to open up a 7-3 lead in the first.

He soon had six game balls but only needed one, converting his first opportunity with a hard backhand winner to the forehand side, but the tables were turned in game two, with Hesham giving himself three game balls at 10-7.

Asal saved the first two with some desperate retrievals, but he had no answer to Hesham’s winner at 10-9, with an overhead cross-court backhand volley hitting the nick and rolling.

The No.2 seed stood in disbelief for a few moments after that winner, but he regained his focus in what would prove to be an extremely quick third, needing just five minutes to take it 11-1 and move within one game of glory.

Hesham had requested a new ball to start game four, but it made little difference, with the younger of the two Egyptians flying out to a 5-1 lead in the blink of an eye.

He would not have to wait long for glory either, winning the next six points to wrap up victory, securing his first title of the season and his 13th overall.

Speaking moments after his win, Asal gave some honest thoughts about how he nearly walked away from the sport last year.

“It’s kind of a relief,” he said. “I’m super, super happy with that. Champions find a way, always find a way.

“Even in the ups and downs, there was lots of learning on the road. There were lots of downs, up a little bit and up again from the dead. I’m saying up from the dead because I was completely out, I was quitting when I knew I had the third ban.

“I actually didn’t want to play again and there were lots of things happening. No one knows what’s inside of you, even if I have a bad attitude or a good attitude, it was tough for me as well.

“It’s a learning process, and I learned a lot about finding the balance between everything in my life. I’m 22 years old and trying to improve myself and like I say, champions find a way.

“I have been wrong a lot, but I’m maturing. I’m still 22 so I’m finding the right balance with the right people. Thankfully, the third time when I was banned, I learned a lot of things and I went to the right people.”

Asal’s win was followed by glory for El Sherbini in the women’s final, capping a dominant week in which the World No.1 did not drop a game.

That was a stark contrast to her opponent El Hammamy, who had needed four games to beat Amina Orfi in the quarter-finals and then come through an epic 99-minute matchup with Nouran Gohar in the last four.

Given that difference in minutes on court, it was perhaps no surprise that it was El Sherbini who made the better start, controlling the early rallies before closing out game one when an El Hammamy lob went out.

Any thoughts of another comfortable game for the top seed were quickly dispelled in game two, as El Hammamy found herself 9-4 up inside 10 minutes, but El Sherbini proved her class, reeling off seven points on the bounce – the last two on stroke decisions – to snatch the game away from her opponent.

Determined not to give up without a fight, El Hammamy continued to throw everything at El Sherbini, even giving herself whiplash after a sprawling dive on the backhand side.

But her efforts would ultimately prove to be in vain, as El Sherbini made the most of her freshness to clinch game three 11-7 and secure the 38th title of her PSA career.

“I’m very pleased, very happy with my performance,” she said after victory.

“I’m really pleased with how I’m playing, how I’m attacking, and I think I’ve improved from the first round until the finals. I’m definitely playing good squash that I’m really happy with.

“Hania definitely wasn’t playing her best and she was feeling it from the past couple of matches, but I’ll just take the win keep going.”

Indian Women’s Hockey Team midfielder Beauty Dungdung enjoying return to international hockey

Ranchi, 15th January 2024: Indian Women’s Hockey Team midfielder Beauty Dungdung has returned in the national side in the ongoing FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024. The hosts India, which are placed in Pool B, earned an emphatic 3-1 win over New Zealand in their second game of the competition on Sunday, with Beauty Dungdung finding herself on the goalsheet along with Udita and Sangita Kumari. After a 0-1 loss to the United States in their first game on Saturday, the crucial win over the Black Sticks has given India a boost of confidence ahead of their final Pool game against Italy set to take place on 16th January.

Beauty, who last featured for India in the Test matches between South Africa and India in Cape Town in January 2023, said that she is enjoying her return to the team and is glad she was able to make contribution in India’s win on Sunday. “I am enjoying my return to the team. It had been a long time since I have been a part of the squad. So, it feels good that I was able to make my way back into the team after an injury and was able to contribute in the win over New Zealand,” she said.

The 21-year-old suffered a major injury early in February last year and had to undergo surgery in March. Beauty opened up on the tough rehabilitation period and explained how support from teammates and coaching staff kept her motivated.

“A week after the operation, I started the rehabilitation process. I was experiencing pain but I kept motivating myself. I was regularly doing the physiotherapy exercises that I was recommended by the medical staff. I realised it required a lot of focus. Until you have the mindset to return, it becomes even more difficult,” Beauty recalled.

“Everyone gave me a lot of support during this time. It was the first time I was injured, so I was quite upset. Our Chief Coach Janneke Schopman motivated me and told me that each player learns from the injury period about what more they can improve in their game and how they can become mentally strong. I realised that if you have a strong mind, it helps in increasing your focus on your game,” she further added.

Beauty, who hails from Simdega district, also expressed elation over having a chance to compete in the Olympic Qualifiers in front of the home crowd. The top three teams from the tournament will book a berth for the 2024 Paris Olympics and Beauty said that she hopes India would earn a spot for the prestigious event.

“I am elated that this is the Olympic Qualifiers and I am getting a chance to play in front of my home crowd and my state. I am used to playing here, so it has been comparatively easier for me to get used to the conditions here. I am excited because my friends and family members are also getting to watch my matches,” she said.

She further admitted that playing in the home state does add to the pressure and opened up on how the team prepares for the mental aspects of the game.

“There is always pressure because I am directly playing a major tournament after injury. But if we let this pressure take over our minds, it would increase our struggle. Our team does yoga and mindfulness exercises every day which relaxes us. Our motto is to not take any pressure before any match and always do our best,” she said.

On being asked about the team’s strategies ahead of the next game, Beauty said that her side will not take any teams lightly. “All the teams in the competition are equally tough. We do not take any competition lightly. Italy have performed well and have shown they will not make it easy for any opposition. We will study their games and try to stick to our strengths and hope we can achieve a positive result,” she signed off.

India will play against Italy on 16th July, 2024 at 1930 hrs IST.

Matches will be live on Sports18 / Jio Cinema in India.

Salah’s Late Penalty Clinches Draw for Egypt Against Mozambique in AFCON

In their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023, Egypt narrowly escaped a defeat against Mozambique, thanks to a late penalty converted by captain Mohamed Salah. The game, which ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw, saw the 7-time champions Egypt being pushed to the brink by a determined Mozambican side.

Egypt took an early lead, just two minutes into the game, with Mohamed Mostafa scoring with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner. Mostafa, later in the game, had another chance created by Salah, but his effort was saved by Mozambique’s goalkeeper Ernan Siluane.

Mozambique, undeterred by the early setback, mounted a strong comeback in the second half. Witness Quembo’s powerful header in the 55th minute marked Mozambique’s first goal in the competition in 14 years, leveling the score. Shortly after, Clesio Bauque’s breakaway goal gave Mozambique a surprising lead, sending shockwaves through the Egyptian team.

In the closing stages of the match, a pivotal moment occurred when Domingos Macandza brought down Mostafa Mohammed in the penalty area. After a VAR review, Egypt was awarded a penalty, which Salah confidently converted, salvaging a draw for the Pharaohs.

This result sets up an intriguing scenario in Group D, with Egypt slated to face Ghana next at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on January 18. The match highlighted not only the resilience and fighting spirit of the Mozambican team but also the pressure on the Egyptian side to live up to their status as one of the favorites in the tournament.

Spurs and Man Utd Share Spoils in a Thrilling 2-2 Draw at Old Trafford

In a gripping Premier League encounter, Tottenham Hotspur twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The match was a showcase of resilience and attacking prowess from both teams.

Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford scored for the home side, but Spurs responded each time with goals from Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur. The draw was a significant event for Man Utd, marking their first home league draw since March 2023. The game also unfolded in the presence of prospective shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. For Spurs, this result, combined with their previous win against United, brought them level with fourth-place Arsenal.

The match began dramatically with Hojlund’s early goal, a powerful left-footed strike, setting the pace. Spurs, however, quickly found their rhythm, and Richarlison’s 19th-minute goal, his seventh of the season, brought them level. This goal contributed to Spurs’ record of scoring in 33 consecutive Premier League matches, a new club milestone.

United regained the lead shortly before halftime through Rashford, only for Spurs to respond immediately after the break with Bentancur’s finely executed left-footed strike. Both sides continued to create chances, with Man Utd’s Scott McTominay and Spurs’ Cristian Romero coming close.

Timo Werner, on his Spurs debut, played a pivotal role in the second Spurs equalizer, showcasing the impact of new signings in crucial matches. United also saw the return of Lisandro Martinez, who received a warm reception from the Old Trafford crowd.

The match concluded with both teams pushing for a winner, but ultimately having to settle for a point each. Man Utd moved up to seventh place with 32 points, while Spurs maintained their position two places higher, now with 40 points.

This thrilling fixture not only highlighted the competitive nature of the Premier League but also underscored the depth and quality in both squads, setting an exciting tone for the remainder of the season.

U19CWC Warm-up Round-up – Plucky Afghanistan shock 2022 finalists

A commanding victory by Afghanistan was the highlight of day two of the warm-up matches at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 in South Africa.

The warm-up games had begun on Saturday with rain playing spoilsport in three of the four games. Nepal beat Scotland in the only result of day one, with matches between India and Australia, Pakistan and South Africa, and USA and Namibia ending in no result.

South Africa pace sensation Kwena Maphaka, Pakistan quick Naseem Shah’s brother Ubaid Shah, Indian skipper Uday Saharan, Australia’s Charlie Anderson, Nepal duo of Gulshan Jha and Tilak Bhandari and the centurion from USA Siddarth Kappa were the stars on the first day of the warm-up matches.

On day two, Afghanistan stunned England with a quality all-round performance while the likes of Zimbabwe and West Indies also registered important wins.

We round up all the action from day two below.

Ireland vs Zimbabwe

Toss: Zimbabwe opt to bowl
Result: Zimbabwe won by 27 runs (DLS Method)

Opting to bowl first, Mashford Shungu and Kohli Eksteen struck early for Zimbabwe, but Ireland recovered with Gavin Roulston and wicketkeeper Kian Hilton putting on a half-century stand. Skipper Matthew Schonken and fellow spinner Ryan Simbi triggered a middle-order collapse that saw Ireland slip to 154/7.

However, Harry Dyer made a fine 44 off just 58 balls with Carson McCullough giving him company as Ireland managed to cross the 200-run mark. They eventually finished on 217/9 in 50 overs.

Schonken was the pick of Zimbabwe’s bowlers, ending with figures of 3/36 in nine overs.

In reply, Ryan Kamwemba and Panashe Taruvinga started well for Zimbabwe, putting on a 91-run opening stand. Kamwemba fell for 52 with Eksteen and Taruvinga falling soon after, but any hopes of an Ireland comeback were quickly shut out by Campbell Macmillan and Ronak Patel, the duo putting on a 73-run stand before rain intervened.

Zimbabwe, well ahead on DLS at that point, registered a win by 27 runs as rain prevented any further play.

Afghanistan vs England

Toss: England opt to bowl
Result: Afghanistan win by 67 runs

Afghanistan toppled England at the Dlamini Oval in Johannesburg by 67 runs after a good all-round performance.

Put in to bat first, Afghanistan were reduced to 82/4, but Sohail Khan Zurmati and Numan Shah made half-centuries to propel Afghanistan to a total of 238. For England, Tazeem Ali shone with figures of 3/45 while Sebastian Morgan and Dominic Kelly took a couple of wickets each.

Skipper Ben McKinney started well for England, but Afghanistan’s trump card, 16-year-old Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar, who has been likened to Mujeeb ur Rahman, sent back three of the top four batters to dent England.

Kelly launched a fightback from No.7, with Eddie Jack making a useful 36, including three sixes, from No.10, but Ghazanfar took his wicket as England were bowled out for 171.

The star for Afghanistan was Ghazanfar, who finished with a five-wicket haul to spell a major warning for Group D teams. Bashir Ahmad and Khalil Ahmad also picked up two wickets apiece for Afghanistan as they notched up a confidence-boosting win.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka

Toss: Sri Lanka opt to bat
Result: Sri Lanka won by 112 runs (DLS Method)

A half-century from opener Pulindu Perera set the tone for Sri Lanka after they opted to bat first against Bangladesh at the Tshwane University of Technology Oval in Pretoria.

While several other middle-order batters got starts, three run-outs hurt Sri Lanka’s pursuit of a high total and they eventually ended up making 238/9 in 50 overs. Wasi Siddiquee picked up 2/26 in six overs for Bangladesh.

In reply, pacer Vishen Halambage led Sri Lanka’s charge as he picked up the wickets of the two openers and No.4 batter Chowdhury Rizwan. Reduced to 70/4, Perera struck through the middle overs with his off-breaks, taking 2 for 5 in 4.5 overs.

Bangladesh finished on 119/9 as Sri Lanka recorded a win by 112 runs on DLS method.

New Zealand vs West Indies

Toss: West Indies opt to bowl
Result: West Indies win by six wickets

A superb bowling performance saw West Indies beat New Zealand at the Braam Fisherville Sports Complex in Johannesburg.

Opting to bowl first, West Indies never let New Zealand off the hook, with wickets coming at regular intervals. Reduced to 75/5, the Kiwis never quite recovered and were bowled out for 131.

Vice-captain and left-arm spinner Nathan Sealy shone with figures of 4/21 with five other bowlers taking a wicket apiece.

Ryan Tsourgas and Matt Rowe took a wicket each early in the run-chase to give the young Blackcaps side some hope, but Joshua Dorne held the innings together from No.3 with some composed batting.

New Zealand skipper Oscar Jackson chipped in with two wickets through the middle overs, but Dorne and Jewel Andrew carried the team home with a stable partnership

Aston Villa Held to a Goalless Stalemate by Everton at Goodison Park

In a closely contested Premier League fixture, Aston Villa missed the chance to equal Liverpool at the top of the table, drawing 0-0 with Everton at Goodison Park. This result marked a crucial point for Everton, who moved one point clear of the relegation zone, ending their three-game losing streak.

The match was historic for Villa’s manager Unai Emery, as it was his first-ever goalless draw in the Premier League. It also stood out as only the sixth match this season in the top flight to end without a goal. Both teams paid tribute to former Everton chairman Peter Johnson, who passed away earlier this week, by wearing black armbands.

Everton’s lineup was strengthened by the return of Abdoulaye Doucoure, making his first appearance since December. Seamus Coleman also made history, surpassing Tim Howard to make a club record 355th Premier League appearance. Aston Villa, coming off an FA Cup win against Middlesbrough, saw the return of Diego Carlos, Douglas Luiz, Moussa Diaby, and Ollie Watkins, with Youri Tielemans on the bench.

The game was action-packed, with Villa initially believing they had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Alex Moreno, but VAR intervened, ruling Leon Bailey offside in the buildup. Everton responded with chances of their own, only to be thwarted by Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with key saves against Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Garner.

The second half saw continued intensity. Everton’s James Tarkowski made crucial interventions to keep the score level. Villa’s late push in the final minutes, including a vital challenge by Everton’s Vitaliy Mykolenko and a last-minute block by Seamus Coleman, ultimately did not break the deadlock.

The match ended with Aston Villa in third place with 43 points, level with Manchester City in second but trailing on goal difference. Everton’s hard-fought point keeps them just outside the relegation zone, one point ahead of Luton Town, who have a game in hand.

This match, though goalless, was a testament to the competitive nature of the Premier League, with both teams showcasing their defensive strengths and resilience.

Osimhen’s Heroic Header Salvages Point for Super Eagles Against Equatorial Guinea

In a gripping encounter at Ebimpe’s Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium, the Nigerian Super Eagles managed a 1-1 draw against a resilient Equatorial Guinea in their opening match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Group A.

Equatorial Guinea opened the scoring with a composed finish by Ivan Salvador in the 36th minute, momentarily stunning the Super Eagles. The Equatorial Guinean lead, however, was short-lived. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen responded with a crucial header, levelling the scoreline and saving his team from an early setback.

The first half was marked by Nigeria’s intense efforts to overturn the deficit, highlighted by Moses Simon’s shot striking the upright just before halftime. The second half saw a more balanced contest, with neither side significantly troubling the opposing goal. Both teams’ defenses remained disciplined, minimizing chances and maintaining the deadlock.

Looking ahead, Nigeria faces a highly anticipated clash against Cote d’Ivoire, who started their campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau. This upcoming match is set to capture the attention of the entire African football community.

Equatorial Guinea, buoyed by their performance and the vital point secured, will next face Guinea-Bissau, who are looking to rebound from their opening loss.

The results leave Group A intriguingly poised, with Cote d’Ivoire leading, while Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria are just a point above Guinea-Bissau. The Nigerian side, with its blend of experienced and emerging talents, will be keen to build on this performance and assert their status as one of the favorites in the tournament.
