Pistons Overcome Grant’s Career-High 49 Points, Beat Trail Blazers in Overtime

PORTLAND, Ore. — In a thrilling overtime victory, the Detroit Pistons defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 128-122 on Thursday night, marking their first consecutive wins since October. Despite a career-high 49 points from Portland’s Jerami Grant, the Pistons showcased resilience and teamwork to secure the win.

Jalen Duren led the Pistons with an impressive double-double, scoring 27 points and grabbing 21 rebounds, while Jaden Ivey and Cade Cunningham added 26 and 23 points, respectively. This victory, following a win against Sacramento the previous night, highlighted Detroit’s determination to improve its record, now standing at 8-43.

The Trail Blazers, significantly short-handed due to illnesses and injuries, struggled to maintain their lead. Anfernee Simons contributed 29 points, but the absence of key players, including Malcolm Brogdon and Deandre Ayton, was felt deeply. Simons also faced a setback with an ankle sprain in the second half, further depleting Portland’s lineup.

Detroit’s comeback in the fourth quarter set the stage for a dramatic finish, with the Pistons tying the game in the final moments and pushing it to overtime. In the extra period, Detroit capitalized on their momentum to clinch the victory, showcasing their potential and growth as a team.

The game occurred amidst significant roster changes for Detroit, with the team trading away Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic and waiving Joe Harris and Killian Hayes to complete the deals. The absence of these rotation players did not deter the Pistons from achieving a much-needed victory.

This win marks a significant moment for Detroit, mirroring their early-season success with back-to-back wins against Charlotte and Chicago. The Pistons, who had previously tied the NBA record with 28 consecutive losses, demonstrated their capacity for growth and resilience.

Looking ahead, the Pistons will face the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, while the Trail Blazers will host the New Orleans Pelicans, with both teams eager to build on their performances and navigate through the challenges of the ongoing NBA season.

Nuggets Overcome Lakers 114-106, Murray and Porter Shine

LOS ANGELES — The Denver Nuggets extended their winning streak to three games by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 114-106 on Thursday night, disrupting the Lakers’ three-game winning spree. Jamal Murray led the charge with 29 points, followed closely by Michael Porter Jr., who contributed 27 points. Nikola Jokic also made a significant impact with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists.

The defending NBA champions embarked on their three-game road trip with this victory, marking their eighth win in the last 10 games. Despite relinquishing a 15-point lead in the second half, the Nuggets managed to maintain their lead throughout the game, culminating in a decisive 10-2 run to secure their victory at the arena where they previously defeated the Lakers in the Western Conference finals last May.

The game was played under the shadow of a newly unveiled 19-foot-tall bronze statue of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant outside their downtown arena, adding an emotional layer to the evening. The Lakers donned their Black Mamba alternate uniforms in tribute to Bryant, with the crowd chanting his name in the final minutes of the game.

For the Lakers, Anthony Davis led with 32 points, while LeBron James added 25 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Austin Reaves also had a notable performance with 15 points and 10 assists. The Lakers faced challenges with their guard lineup due to D’Angelo Russell’s absence due to left knee soreness and Max Christie’s injury before halftime.

The Nuggets showcased their championship-winning core’s strength, while the Lakers, despite not making moves at the trade deadline, looked to maintain their roster’s chemistry and potential. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka expressed his strategy of not risking the team’s current dynamics for marginal improvements, focusing instead on potential significant moves in the summer.

The game highlighted the Nuggets’ cohesive play and the Lakers’ resilience, despite the absence of key players. As both teams look ahead, the Nuggets will face Sacramento next, while the Lakers will host New Orleans, continuing their quest for success in the ongoing NBA season.

A-Leagues Launches 2024 Pride Celebration

February 9, 2024 – In a celebration of diversity and inclusivity, the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) is proud to announce the continuation of its Pride Celebrations, signifying the code’s ongoing commitment to making football accessible and inclusive for everyone.

Set to take place from March 8-10 in Australia and March 30 in New Zealand, across both the Liberty A-League Women and Isuzu UTE A-League Men, the 2024 celebration builds on the success of last year as the A-Leagues became the first league in the world to hold simultaneous men’s and women’s Pride Celebrations grounded in education.

Over the last two-and-a-half-years, the APL has developed and delivered a series of initiatives, including a comprehensive training program for players, staff, executives and partners, and the roll out of GoBubble technology to help moderate online hate.

In 2024, the A-Leagues are once again providing LGBTIQ+ inclusion training to all players and key stakeholders. The training content is being uniquely designed for players by players by partnering with the PFA and our delivery partner, Pride Cup.

The March celebrations will be headlined by the annual Pride Cup double-header between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory. Across the weekends, a number of men’s and women’s teams will also celebrate Pride in their own way including engaging community groups, rainbow corner flags, rainbow armbands, while some clubs will play in a special Pride kit and rainbow socks.

A-Leagues Commissioner Nick Garcia said: “The Pride celebration is another example of how welcoming and inclusive football is as a sport for everyone in Australia and New Zealand.

“We began this journey with Pride Cup and the PFA in 2021 and are looking forward to continuing what is an extremely important initiative within our game. We are proud of the efforts that football in Australia and New Zealand has made to make football more inclusive for fans, players and staff and we look forward to continuing to play our part in 2024.

“The Pride Celebration is grounded in education and training with the ambition of seeing every person involved within our game in Australia and New Zealand feeling safe and included.”

Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) Player Representative and Central Coast Mariners’ Liberty A-League Women captain Taren King said: “I’m really excited for Pride round this season. Last year we saw a number of clubs make a big effort to show their support for the LGBTQI+ community and I’m looking forward to seeing more clubs get around the initiative this season.

“I think it’s so important that both clubs and players use their platforms to show our fans that everyone has a place in our game and all individuals are accepted for who they are.”

Pride Cup, Chief Executive Officer, Hayley Conway said: ”The A-Leagues Pride Celebration is the first of its kind in the world, bringing together inclusion training and iconic rainbow-themed matches across both men’s and women’s professional leagues.

“Every club, every player, and every fan can play a part in bringing pride to every pitch and learning to every locker room. With just 6% of LGBTIQ+ young people feeling safe to play sports, Pride Cup initiatives are critical to making sure that everyone can play.”.

Squash: Resurgent Wilhelmi Downs Salazar To Reach First World Tour Quarter-Final In Day Two Of Pittsburgh Open

Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi survived match balls in the fourth and fifth games to beat Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in a 70-minute classic at The Pittsburgh Open and progress to his maiden quarter-final on the PSA World Tour.

The first game saw dominance from Salazar as he took an early 9-5 lead, controlling the tempo of match as the inexperienced Wilhelmi struggled to keep up, finally sealing the first game 11-6 as the Swiss player’s back-court boast hit the tin.

Wilhelmi earned his first game ball of the match at 10-9, but a mis-judged straight drive came back to him, earning the Mexican a stroke and two quick points moved Salazar within a game of victory.

The Swiss player’s fightback began by catching Salazar out with a thin backhand cross-court as he came out of the break in play looking sharper. Salazar battled to 5-5, but the 23-year-old ran away with the game from there to give himself four chances to halve the deficit, taking the game on fourth time of asking.

Wilhelmi claimed the vital fourth game with a reverse angle shot, punctuating the momentum shift in the match with a celebratory fist-pump towards the crowd as he left the court.

The final game saw Salazar take a seemingly decisive 7-1 early lead, but Wilhelmi rallied, and soon the game looked as close as the end of the fourth, and the two players found themselves level at 9-9. Wilhelmi earned his first match ball of the encounter at 10-9, however Salazar found an important kill shot off of his opponent’s serve to prolong the match.

Wilhelmi finally put an end to the dramatic final game, stretching his opponent with a drive after a front court boast to force the mistake and earn his first quarter-final place on the World Tour, surviving three match balls in the process.

“I had a bit of a bad start, he played well, I struggled a bit with his game in the beginning, but the ball got colder and I think that was a bit better for me and I’m just happy I fought through all the games, especially the fourth and fifth tie breaks,” said Wilhelmi after the match.

“I just kept on going point-for-point. Like my dad always says, ‘it’s not over until it’s over’, so I just kept on fighting and it was good.

In the other seedings upset of the day, India’s Velavan Senthilkumar won out in a thrilling 3-1 encounter against home favourite and No.8 seed Faraz Khan.

Senthilkumar took an impressive early lead over the American, and cruised to an 11-6 first-game win. Khan regrouped, showing the World No.63 his strength as he levelled the match at 1-1.

The Indian reacted, storming to a 10-5 lead and Khan struck the tin on his return to put the 25-year-old within a game of his maiden Silver-event quarter-final.

The American pulled ahead in the fourth game as he took a 6-1 lead, but Senthilkumar upped his game, playing quick and accurate squash to level the game at 8-8. The Indian continued his late resurgence and won the fourth game 11-8 to secure the match, ending with a mistake from Khan on match ball.

“It was really good. First of all, Faraz is a really good player. I’ve seen him play recently and he’s been having some really good results so going into the match I was a bit nervous, but at the same time really excited to be here competing. I was just there, enjoying my squash and enjoying myself,” said Senthilkumar after the match.

On achieving his maiden Silver-event quarter-final, he said, “I’m really happy, it’s something that I’ve always pushed for, and I’m always going to keep pushing for it as much as I can.”

The quarter-finals of the Pittsburgh Open commence at 17:00 (GMT-5) on Friday, 9th February, with action from court two live on SQUASHTV.

Squash: Naughton Battles Past Abbas To Set Up Weaver Semi-Final At DAC Pro Squash Classic

Canada’s Hollie Naughton fought past No.4 seed Nada Abbas in four games to reach the DAC Pro Squash Classic semi-finals and set up a third meeting of the season with World No.6 Olivia Weaver.

No.6 seed Naughton displayed her battling qualities to come from behind in three separate games – notably 10-6 down in the opener – to book her spot in the last four of the PSA World Tour Silver event.

After Naughton claimed six consecutive points to steal the first game in a 12-10 tie-break, Abbas sharpened up her game in the front two corners and brought the scoreline level in what was a back-and-forth encounter at the Detroit Athletic Club.

Despite Abbas having another game ball to move clear at 11-10 in the third, Naughton once again saved her best squash for the pressure moments, clinching two consecutive points to re-take the lead in the match.

The fourth followed a similar pattern of play, with Egypt’s Abbas edging the middle phase of the game to move 10-8 up but Naughton reeling off three straight points to earn a match ball, and claiming victory at the first time of asking.

The Canadian No.1 will play No.2 seed Weaver for the third time in her last four events on the PSA World Tour, with their last two meetings having both gone to five games, and each player winning a match a piece.

After the match, Naughton said: “I’m relieved to get through that to be honest. I think every game I won I was down in and had to fight back in. I’m really happy with my mental strength to push on through in those key moments.

“I just tried to tell myself to stick to the game plan. I just needed to make it tough and trust my short game. I felt hesitant to put the ball in short and then Nada can then start to do things, so I just tried to tell myself to swing through and get that ball into the back corners.

“I’m just trying to enjoy getting back on court. I took a bit of time off over Christmas and told myself I wouldn’t come back on court until I wanted to, and I’m starting to enjoy it now.”

Naughton’s opponent in the semi-finals, Olivia Weaver, was in sublime form to record her sixth straight win on the PSA World Tour, defeating No.7 seed Melissa Alves in straight games.

The USA No.2 found an immaculate length early on in her encounter, moving into a 9-2 lead in the first and never looking back throughout the match. Weaver’s impressive movement forced Alves to search for winners in the front two corners, but with this came the risk of unforced errors. The No.2 seed dropped just nine points on her way to victory, walking off court after 27 minutes of action.

“I’m really pleased,” Weaver reflected after her match. “Melissa is not only an amazing player, extremely dangerous, but she’s also one of my best friends on tour which is always tricky. I just tried to get that out of my head today and focus on hitting my targets, my movement and finding my game.

“I think the consistency of my hitting, the consistency of my length and then just my decision-making is just continuing to get better and better. I’m finding that balance of being patient but also aggressive and starting to trust myself more and more.”

World No.3 Nouran Gohar looked in ominous form during her quarter-final victory against England’s Jasmine Hutton, needing just 19 minutes to book her spot in the last four.

The ‘Terminator’ flew out of the blocks in an 11-2 first game that lasted just four minutes, hitting powerfully into the back two corners before cutting the ball in short. Hutton grew into the game in the second, using more height on the front wall and asserting herself in the middle of the court, but Gohar always held a significant buffer, doubling her advantage through an 11-8 scoreline.

Gohar looked ever more confident as the match progressed, freeing her arm and taking on winners from all areas of the court in the third. The top seed sealed victory with a thumping forehand winner to move one step closer to claiming her second title at the Detroit-based event.

After progressing to the last four, Gohar said: “Jasmine is a very tricky player because she has really good hands and has some really good results, so obviously I was very well prepared for this match and wanted to give it a good performance today.

“I’m known for being a good starter, so it’s something that I do well. Obviously, against a tricky player you try to do this even more, and then having a 1-0 lead makes you much more comfortable on court.”

The final match of the night saw No.3 seed Rowan Elaraby end the impressive run of Egyptian compatriot Hana Moataz in three games of entertaining action. Despite powering through the opening two games by dominant 11-4 and 11-3 scorelines, Elaraby was made to fight right until the end for victory, with Moataz saving five match balls in a tight third game.

The World No.10 was dragged into a lengthy third-game tie-break by Moataz, but eventually sealed victory at the sixth time of asking when a stroke was awarded in her favour.

After the match, Elaraby said: “I’m glad with my performance today. I started really strongly and I think I was glad with my game plan and how I played. It is always tough playing a good friend. I think in the end, I was dragged into her game plan, and I almost forgot what I was doing. Once I remembered, I started playing well again and I’m glad I’m through in three.

On her upcoming semi-final against top seed Gohar, she added: “I’m really excited for this one, we just played recently and I have a good game plan for tomorrow. I just want to play my best squash and see how it goes.”

Day four of action from the DAC Pro Squash Classic 2024 commences at 17:00 (GMT-5) on Friday, 9th February, with every second of action available to watch live on SQUASHTV.

Golden Knights Secure 300th Franchise Victory, Defeat Coyotes 3-2

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Vegas Golden Knights continued their impressive run, defeating the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 at Mullett Arena on Thursday, marking the 300th win in franchise history. The Golden Knights, who have now won seven of their past nine games, relied on a strong first-period performance and solid goaltending from Adin Hill to secure the victory.

Jonathan Marchessault and Nicolas Hague set the tone early, scoring 58 seconds apart in the first period, with Chandler Stephenson also contributing a goal. Hill, winning his sixth consecutive start, showcased his reliability in net by making 20 saves and holding the Coyotes to just two goals.

The Coyotes, who have been struggling recently with their fourth consecutive loss, saw goals from Clayton Keller and Jason Zucker. Despite a valiant effort to rally back, Arizona couldn’t overcome Vegas’ early lead. Karel Vejmelka’s performance in relief was a bright spot, as he stopped all 28 shots he faced after replacing Connor Ingram in the first period.

Vegas forward Ivan Barbashev highlighted the team’s quick start as a key factor in the win. The Golden Knights’ ability to capitalize on opportunities early in the game set the pace for their eventual victory.

Arizona’s coach Andre Tourigny acknowledged the team’s slow start but praised their effort as the game progressed. The return of Barrett Hayton, after missing 32 games due to a hand injury, was a notable addition for the Coyotes, although it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

Marchessault’s goal just 19 seconds into the game exemplified Vegas’ aggressive approach, while Hague’s goal ended a lengthy scoring drought. The Golden Knights’ commitment to playing consistent, winning hockey was evident, with coach Bruce Cassidy noting the team’s focus on managing the puck well and minimizing risks.

Keller’s third-period goal brought the Coyotes within one, but Hill and the Golden Knights’ defense held strong to secure the win. Cassidy praised Hill’s calm demeanor and ability to perform in big games, noting the team’s comfort level with him in net.

The victory not only marks a significant milestone for the Vegas Golden Knights but also demonstrates their readiness to compete deep into the season. As they look to maintain their winning ways, the Golden Knights’ balanced attack and defensive solidity will be key factors. The Coyotes, meanwhile, will aim to regroup and find a way to snap their losing streak as they continue to navigate through the season.

Islanders Dominate Lightning 6-2, Horvat and Barzal Shine

ELMONT, N.Y. — The New York Islanders delivered a commanding performance, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 at UBS Arena on Thursday, with Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal leading the charge. Horvat and Barzal each contributed a goal and an assist, helping the Islanders (22-17-12) secure their second consecutive victory in a game where team effort and willpower were on full display.

Islanders coach Patrick Roy praised the team’s commitment, particularly highlighting the backchecking, tracking, and shot blocking that propelled New York to victory. The Islanders’ ability to move the puck quickly and effectively counter the Lightning’s one-on-one play was crucial in securing the win.

Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel scored for the Lightning (27-20-5), who faced their second consecutive loss amidst a challenging period. Kucherov, leading the NHL with 87 points, continued his impressive form, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Islanders’ onslaught. Jonas Johansson, in goal for Tampa Bay, made 18 saves in a night where the Lightning struggled to find their rhythm.

The game began with Noah Dobson giving the Islanders an early lead, capitalizing on an offensive chance that saw the puck deflect off Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak. Despite Kucherov’s tying goal, the Islanders quickly regained control, with Barzal and Kyle Palmieri extending the lead. Ryan Pulock and Casey Cizikas further solidified the Islanders’ advantage, showcasing the depth of scoring talent within the team.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, acknowledging the need for consistency and resilience. Despite brief moments of pressure on the Islanders, the Lightning were unable to sustain their momentum, ultimately falling short in their comeback efforts.

The Islanders’ power play contributions from Pulock and Horvat underscored the team’s multi-dimensional threat, while Ilya Sorokin’s goaltending, with 18 saves, kept the Lightning at bay. The win reflects the Islanders’ ability to execute their game plan effectively, emphasizing team play and individual skill.

As both teams look ahead, the Islanders aim to build on their recent success, leveraging their balanced attack and strong defensive play. The Lightning, faced with the task of breaking their losing streak, must regroup and rediscover the form that has made them one of the league’s top contenders.

Necas’ Hat Trick Powers Hurricanes Past Avalanche 5-2

RALEIGH, N.C. — Martin Necas led the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche with his first NHL hat trick, energizing the team and fans at PNC Arena on Thursday. The win extended the Hurricanes’ positive momentum, showcasing their strength and depth as they improved their record to 29-16-5.

Necas, who has played 330 NHL games, expressed his relief and excitement about achieving the milestone, emphasizing the significance of contributing to the team’s success. His three goals in the first period set the pace for the Hurricanes, who have been on a strong run, winning four of their last five games.

Teuvo Teravainen played a crucial role in facilitating the offense, recording a career-high four assists. His chemistry with Necas was evident, particularly on the third goal where his precise passing enabled Necas to score easily. Michael Bunting also contributed with a goal, benefiting from Teravainen’s playmaking on the power play.

The Avalanche, facing their third consecutive loss, saw goals from Samuel Girard and Zach Parise, who scored his first goal since joining Colorado. Despite their efforts and a brief rally in the first period, the Avalanche struggled to overcome the Hurricanes’ early lead and special teams’ performance. Goaltender Alexandar Georgiev made 22 saves, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for Colorado, now 0-2-1 in their last three games.

Pyotr Kochetkov started in net for Carolina, making key saves before being replaced by Antti Raanta due to a lower-body injury. Kochetkov returned for the third period, bolstering the Hurricanes’ defense and finishing with 18 saves.

The Avalanche’s power play woes continued, failing to convert on six opportunities. This aspect of their game has been a challenge during their recent road trip, with the team going 0-for-12 on the power play in three games.

Carolina’s win was a testament to their resilience and the contributions from various players. Necas’ performance, in particular, highlighted his potential and the offensive firepower the Hurricanes possess. As the Avalanche look to regroup and address their power play issues, the Hurricanes aim to build on their recent success and solidify their position in the standings.

Flyers Overpower Jets 4-1, Extending Winnipeg’s Losing Streak to Five Games

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Flyers secured a commanding 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday, further aggravating Winnipeg’s struggles with their fifth consecutive loss. Travis Konecny was instrumental in the win, contributing a goal and an assist, demonstrating the depth and resilience of the Flyers (27-19-6) who have now won back-to-back games after a challenging five-game losing streak.

Tyson Foerster opened the scoring early in the first period, followed by Konecny and Morgan Frost, who helped establish a 3-0 lead by the end of the first. Ryan Poehling’s short-handed goal in the second period underscored Philadelphia’s dominance, bringing the score to 4-0. Samuel Ersson, continuing his role as a cornerstone for the Flyers, made 28 saves, reinforcing the team’s defensive prowess.

The Jets (30-14-5), facing an uphill battle to find their form, struggled to penetrate Philadelphia’s defense. Kyle Connor managed to score a late goal for Winnipeg, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback. Laurent Brossoit, in net for the Jets, made 17 saves, facing a relentless Flyers offense that capitalized on their opportunities.

Jets coach Rick Bowness emphasized the team’s commitment to their identity and work ethic, despite the current goal-scoring drought and defensive lapses. The team’s determination to stay true to their style of play remains unwavering as they aim to overcome this rough patch.

The Flyers showcased their capability for balanced scoring and solid goaltending, with contributions from across the lineup. Their ability to execute on special teams, particularly with the league-leading 11th short-handed goal, was a highlight of the night.

Winnipeg’s recent performances contrast sharply with their strong start to the season, and as they look to break out of this slump, the team’s focus on consistency and execution becomes paramount. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s recent victories provide a blueprint for success as they continue to climb the standings.

The game also marked notable streaks and milestones, including the end of the Flyers’ shutout streak against the Jets and Winnipeg’s longest losing streak since January 2022. Both teams are at crucial junctures in their seasons, with the Flyers aiming to build on their momentum and the Jets seeking to rediscover their early-season form.

Flames Top Devils 5-3, Markstrom’s Stellar Performance Spoils Hughes’ Return

NEWARK, N.J. — The Calgary Flames continued their winning ways, defeating the New Jersey Devils 5-3 at the Prudential Center on Thursday, with goalie Jacob Markstrom’s 37 saves playing a crucial role in their victory. The Flames’ win put a damper on Jack Hughes’ return for the Devils, marking his first game since January 5 after missing 11 games due to an upper-body injury.

Calgary’s head coach, Ryan Huska, lauded Markstrom’s performance, noting it as one of his best since joining the Flames. Hughes, despite his return, couldn’t make the impact the Devils hoped for, recording four shots on goal but finishing minus-3 in over 20 minutes of play. New Jersey’s coach Lindy Ruff acknowledged that Hughes’ lack of practice time might have affected his game.

Connor Zary and Andrew Mangiapane each had a goal and an assist, with Andrei Kuzmenko also finding the net in his second consecutive game. Noah Hanifin added two assists for Calgary (24-22-5), who secured their third straight win. Zary’s second-period goal, which gave the Flames a 2-1 lead, was particularly noteworthy for its opportunism.

For the Devils (25-21-3), Ondrej Palat scored twice, and Nico Hischier added a goal and an assist, but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome Calgary’s momentum. Jesper Bratt also contributed with three assists. Despite taking an early lead and a second-period advantage, the Devils couldn’t sustain their performance, adding to their recent struggles with four losses in their past six games.

The Flames’ win was bolstered by their third-period surge, where they extended their lead with goals from Kevin Rooney and Kuzmenko. Calgary’s aggressive play and ability to capitalize on opportunities were key factors in their success. Mangiapane’s late empty-net goal sealed the 5-3 victory for the Flames.

In a notable moment, Calgary forward Jonathan Huberdeau played his 800th NHL game, reaching a significant career milestone. The game also featured a tribute to Yegor Sharangovich, who returned to Prudential Center with the Flames after spending the first three seasons of his NHL career with the Devils.

As the Flames continue their four-game road trip, they carry with them the confidence and cohesion demonstrated in recent games. For the Devils, the challenge remains to find consistency and capitalize on their talent, as they navigate a crucial phase of the season.

Panthers Overcome Capitals 4-2, Lomberg Ends Goal Drought

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers extended their winning form by defeating the Washington Capitals 4-2 at Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday, dealing the Capitals their sixth consecutive loss. Ryan Lomberg emerged as an unlikely hero for the Panthers, scoring his first goal in 35 games to break a tie in the third period, contributing significantly to Florida’s victory.

Matthew Tkachuk played a pivotal role, adding a goal and two assists, as the Panthers (32-15-4) secured their fifth win in six games. Sergei Bobrovsky’s goaltending was crucial, as he stopped 21 shots to win his third straight start, underscoring the team’s robust defensive performance.

The Capitals (22-20-7) opened the scoring with Alex Ovechkin finding the back of the net in his signature style with a power-play slap shot from the left circle. Despite leading twice in the game, Washington couldn’t maintain their advantage, with Capitals coach Spencer Carbery emphasizing the need for consistency throughout the match.

Lomberg’s tie-breaking goal came off a perfect pass from Dmitry Kulikov, showcasing the depth and versatility of the Panthers’ roster. Eetu Luostarinen later sealed the win with an empty-net goal, ensuring the Panthers maintained their strong standing in the NHL.

The Capitals’ struggle was evident, with Darcy Kuemper facing a barrage of 37 shots, highlighting the offensive pressure applied by the Panthers throughout the game. Despite efforts from Anthony Mantha and the return of key players, Washington couldn’t halt their losing streak, now standing at 0-5-1.

Sam Reinhart’s power-play goal tied the game in the second period, continuing his impressive scoring streak, with Tkachuk assisting. Tkachuk’s performance emphasized the importance of the Panthers’ power play, which has been a consistent source of success this season.

The game also had moments of individual brilliance, with Bobrovsky denying a penalty shot from Washington’s Beck Malenstyn, and Tkachuk and Ovechkin continuing their impressive runs of form against each other.

As the Panthers look to build on their recent success, the Capitals face the challenge of regrouping and ending their skid. The Panthers’ ability to leverage contributions from across their lineup, coupled with strategic coaching, has them poised for further success. Meanwhile, the Capitals will need to find answers quickly to regain their early-season form and climb back into playoff contention.

Bruins End Canucks’ Point Streak with a Convincing 4-0 Victory

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins delivered a stellar performance to halt the Vancouver Canucks’ impressive 12-game point streak, securing a 4-0 win at TD Garden on Thursday night. Linus Ullmark’s goaltending was impeccable, achieving his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his NHL career with 17 saves, propelling the Bruins to a dominant victory.

The game was marked by the Bruins’ aggressive defensive strategy and efficient scoring, with Brad Marchand, Danton Heinen, Morgan Geekie, and Pavel Zacha all finding the back of the net. Marchand and Heinen notably scored short-handed goals, highlighting Boston’s prowess in special teams play. The Bruins’ offense was further bolstered by David Pastrnak and Charlie Coyle, who each tallied two assists, contributing to Boston tying Vancouver atop the NHL standings with 73 points.

Despite the absence of All-Star Devin Booker due to a sore left hip, the Suns showcased their depth and offensive capabilities. Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal led the charge, scoring 31 and 30 points respectively, as Phoenix maintained control throughout the game, displaying a nearly 60% shooting accuracy from the field and accumulating 37 assists.

Lauri Markkanen was the top scorer for the Jazz with 22 points, supported by John Collins with 21 and Collin Sexton with 19. Despite their efforts, Utah struggled to contain Phoenix’s offensive onslaught, particularly in the critical moments of the game, as noted by Jazz coach Will Hardy.

Phoenix’s victory was a collective effort, with significant contributions from Eric Gordon, Jusuf Nurkic, and Grayson Allen. Gordon’s efficient shooting and Nurkic’s presence in the paint complemented Allen’s career-high 14 assists, showcasing his versatility and playmaking abilities in Booker’s absence.

The Suns and Jazz both made moves at the trade deadline, acquiring new players to bolster their rosters. However, the newcomers were not available for Thursday’s game, leaving both teams to rely on their existing lineups.

Looking ahead, the Jazz aim to regroup as they host Golden State on Monday, while the Suns carry their momentum into a matchup against Golden State on Saturday.

Thursday’s victory not only highlights Phoenix’s offensive depth and resilience in the face of key absences but also positions them as formidable contenders as the season progresses.

Suns’ Dynamic Duo of Durant and Beal Lead Charge in Victory Over Jazz

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns, even without their All-Star Devin Booker due to a sore left hip, demonstrated their offensive prowess in a convincing 129-115 win against the Utah Jazz on Thursday night. Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal spearheaded the attack, scoring 31 and 30 points respectively, as the Suns maintained their lead from start to finish, capturing their third consecutive win and marking their 12th victory in the last 15 games.

This win also completed a season sweep for the Suns over the Jazz, highlighting Phoenix’s dominance in their head-to-head matchups. The Suns’ offense was on full display, shooting nearly 60% from the field, dishing out 37 assists against a mere 12 turnovers, and racking up 30 fast-break points. Such a performance underscored the team’s commitment to a cohesive, team-first approach as emphasized by Suns coach Frank Vogel.

Lauri Markkanen led the Jazz with 22 points, supported by John Collins and Collin Sexton, who contributed 21 and 19 points, respectively. Despite their efforts, Utah struggled to contain Phoenix’s offensive onslaught, especially in the critical moments of the game.

Phoenix set the tone early, establishing a 40-28 lead by the end of the first quarter, courtesy of Durant’s sharpshooting. While Utah managed to narrow the gap to three points early in the third quarter, Phoenix quickly countered with a decisive 13-0 run, bolstered by key three-pointers from Gordon and Beal, to firmly regain control of the game. The Suns entered the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead and maintained their advantage till the final buzzer.

Eric Gordon and Jusuf Nurkic also made significant contributions for the Suns, with Gordon shooting an efficient 7-of-8 from the field for 19 points, and Nurkic adding 16 points and eight rebounds. Grayson Allen, stepping up in Booker’s absence, recorded a career-high 14 assists, showcasing his versatility and playmaking abilities.

The game also followed a flurry of trade deadline activity for both teams, with the Suns acquiring Royce O’Neale and David Roddy, and the Jazz bringing in Kevin Knox II, Kira Lewis Jr., and Otto Porter Jr., though the new additions did not feature in Thursday’s contest.

As the Suns look ahead to their next challenge against Golden State on Saturday, they carry with them the momentum of a strong team performance and the flexibility demonstrated in adjusting to lineup changes. The Jazz, on the other hand, aim to regroup and capitalize on their new acquisitions as they prepare to host Golden State on Monday.

Thursday’s victory for Phoenix not only highlights their offensive depth and resilience in the face of key absences but also positions them as formidable contenders as the season progresses.

Bulls Rally Past Grizzlies for a 118-110 Victory, DeRozan Leads with 30 Points

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Chicago Bulls mounted a spirited fourth-quarter rally to overcome the Memphis Grizzlies 118-110 on Thursday night, showcasing their depth and resilience. DeMar DeRozan spearheaded the Bulls’ offense with a game-high 30 points, leading his team to its second consecutive win and third in their last four outings.

Andre Drummond’s impactful double-double, consisting of 21 points and 13 rebounds, alongside his impressive 10 of 11 shooting from the field, was instrumental in the victory. Nikola Vucevic and Coby White each contributed significantly, adding 20 points apiece, with Vucevic also securing 10 rebounds.

The strategic decision by Bulls coach Billy Donovan to deploy centers Drummond and Vucevic together on the court paid dividends, as the duo dominated the paint and led Chicago to a commanding 46-34 rebounding advantage over Memphis. This unconventional lineup posed a unique challenge for the Grizzlies, with Drummond expressing enthusiasm about the potential of this partnership.

Memphis, despite a strong performance from Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 28 points before fouling out, and an impressive showing from GG Jackson with 27 points, could not stave off the Bulls’ late surge. The Grizzlies, who have been plagued by injuries, suffered their seventh consecutive loss, struggling to maintain their lead in the fourth quarter.

GG Jackson, a two-way player and a notable pick from last year’s draft, provided a silver lining for Memphis with his scoring versatility, earning praise from Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. However, the team’s reliance on a makeshift lineup in critical moments of the game, particularly in the closing quarters, has been a recurring challenge this season.

The game was tightly contested, with neither team able to establish a double-digit lead. Entering the fourth quarter with a slight edge, Memphis extended their lead to six points, only for Chicago to respond with a decisive 19-6 run, claiming a 104-97 advantage and ultimately securing the win.

This matchup further highlighted the Grizzlies’ struggle to find consistency with their ever-changing starting lineups, exacerbated by recent trades and ongoing injury woes. The return of Jaren Jackson Jr. after a brief absence due to hip soreness was a notable moment, with the forward making an immediate impact.

As the Bulls look ahead to continuing their four-game road trip in Orlando, the Grizzlies aim to halt their losing streak in Charlotte. Both teams face the challenge of adjusting to recent roster changes and finding a winning formula as they navigate through the remainder of the season.

Timberwolves Dominate Bucks 129-105, Spoil Doc Rivers’ Home Debut

MILWAUKEE — The Minnesota Timberwolves showcased their sharpshooting prowess, hitting 21 of 41 from beyond the arc, to secure a comprehensive 129-105 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night. This win came at the expense of the Bucks’ new head coach, Doc Rivers, who was making his home debut after a challenging five-game road trip that saw Milwaukee go 1-4.

Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 26 points and nine assists, while Karl-Anthony Towns, Mike Conley, Naz Reid, and Rudy Gobert contributed significantly to the scoring effort. Edwards emphasized the joy in seeing his team take and make confident shots, underscoring a night where the Timberwolves’ offense clicked on all cylinders.

The game also marked a less-than-ideal scenario for the Bucks, who were without key players Damian Lillard and Khris Middleton due to sprained ankles. Brook Lopez’s return, following a brief hiatus for the birth of his child, was a silver lining, but it was not enough to counteract the Timberwolves’ offensive barrage.

Both teams entered the game with depleted rosters following trade deadline moves. The Bucks acquired Patrick Beverley in exchange for Cam Payne and a second-round pick, while the Timberwolves traded for Monte Morris, sending Troy Brown, Shake Milton, and a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons. The absence of Beverley and Morris, along with Lillard and Payne, left the Bucks without a pure point guard, complicating their game plan against a surging Timberwolves team.

As the game slipped away in the third quarter, Rivers made the decision to rest Giannis Antetokounmpo, prioritizing his health ahead of a busy schedule. The Timberwolves capitalized, extending their lead to as much as 28 points and never looking back.

Despite the loss, A.J. Green provided a bright spot for the Bucks, scoring a career-high 27 points, including an impressive 7 of 8 from three-point range. Jae Crowder also had a standout performance, hitting season highs in points, rebounds, and assists.

The Timberwolves’ victory was a testament to their collective effort and communication, particularly on defense, which allowed them to disrupt the Bucks’ offense effectively. Conley highlighted the importance of this communication and the impact it had on their defensive performance.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves will take their momentum to Los Angeles, where they face the Clippers on Monday. The Bucks, meanwhile, will seek to bounce back quickly as they host the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, hoping for the return of their sidelined stars to bolster their lineup.

This matchup underscored the Timberwolves’ potential when their offense is firing on all cylinders, while the Bucks are reminded of the challenges ahead as they navigate injuries and integrate new players into their system.

Cavaliers Cruise Past Short-Handed Nets for Eighth Straight Win

NEW YORK — The Cleveland Cavaliers extended their impressive winning streak to eight games, showcasing their dominance in a 118-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night. This win, marking Cleveland’s 16th in the last 17 games, highlighted their cohesive play and emerging status as a powerhouse in the league.

Donovan Mitchell led the charge with 27 points, setting the tone early and maintaining his aggressive play throughout the game. The Cavaliers also benefited from a strong performance by Evan Mobley, who contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds, along with Jarrett Allen’s double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Darius Garland added another layer of scoring with 14 points, underlining Cleveland’s balanced offensive attack.

Shooting 53% from the field, the Cavaliers dominated the boards with a 45-33 rebounding advantage and displayed excellent teamwork, assisting on 25 of their 41 made baskets. The victory was particularly satisfying as it came on the back end of a back-to-back set, following a win at Washington the previous night.

Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff emphasized the joy and unity within the team, attributing their success to the collective effort and the enjoyment derived from competition and support for one another.

The Nets, on the other hand, struggled in the absence of key players, with Mikal Bridges leading their scoring efforts with 26 points in their third consecutive loss. Cam Thomas contributed 17 points, but the team’s efforts were not enough to challenge the surging Cavaliers. The defeat also marked the Nets’ third loss to Cleveland this season, including a previous encounter in France.

Brooklyn underwent significant changes at the trade deadline, trading away Spencer Dinwiddie and Royce O’Neale while acquiring Dennis Schroder, Thaddeus Young, Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin, and the rights to Vanja Marinkovic in various deals. These roster adjustments indicate a period of transition for the Nets as they look to regroup and build chemistry with their new additions.

A notable moment in the game occurred in the second half when Ben Simmons and Jarrett Allen were both issued technical fouls following a scuffle. This incident sparked a 21-0 run by the Cavaliers, effectively sealing the victory with their relentless defensive pressure and efficient scoring.

As the Cavaliers look ahead to their next game against Toronto, they carry the momentum of their winning streak and the depth of their roster as key factors in their continued success. The Nets, facing a matchup against San Antonio, will aim to bounce back and integrate their newly acquired players into the fold, hoping to reverse their recent fortunes.

This game not only reinforced the Cavaliers’ status as contenders but also highlighted the challenges and potential for the Nets as they navigate through the remainder of the season with their revamped lineup.

Doncic Shines as Mavericks Triumph Over Knicks in Injury-Stricken Matchup

NEW YORK — Luka Doncic delivered a stellar performance, scoring 39 points, dishing out 11 assists, and grabbing eight rebounds, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 122-108 victory against the New York Knicks on Thursday night. The Knicks, plagued by injuries and recent trades, were left with only seven available players in the second half, challenging their depth and resilience.

Tim Hardaway Jr., facing his former team, contributed 19 points, while Derrick Jones Jr. added 18, bolstering the Mavericks’ offense. Kyrie Irving, in a supportive role, finished with 16 points. The victory marked a successful end to the Mavericks’ 3-0 road trip, a streak that coincided with the team making significant trades to acquire big men P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford.

Doncic’s performance, particularly in the second half where he scored 27 points, was a spectacle of skill and leadership. Among his highlights was a remarkable behind-the-back pass to Dwight Powell, showcasing his vision and creativity on the court. The Mavericks’ new acquisitions, Washington and Gafford, are anticipated to integrate seamlessly, benefiting from Doncic’s ability to create opportunities for his teammates.

Donte DiVincenzo stepped up for the Knicks with a game-high 36 points, while Josh Hart recorded a season-high 23 points, along with 12 assists and 10 rebounds, achieving his second career triple-double. The Knicks, however, were severely handicapped without All-Star Jalen Brunson and other key players due to injuries and trades, including a significant deal earlier that day for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks, which further depleted their lineup.

The Knicks’ situation was exacerbated by the absence of Julius Randle, OG Anunoby, and Mitchell Robinson, with Anunoby undergoing surgery to remove a loose bone fragment from his elbow, sidelining him for further evaluation. Isaiah Hartenstein’s second-half absence due to a sore Achilles tendon left the Knicks with even fewer options, challenging Coach Tom Thibodeau’s strategy and depth.

Despite the adversity, Thibodeau commended his team’s effort and resilience, especially from players who have seen limited action this season. The Knicks’ depleted roster saw contributions from Charlie Brown Jr. and rookie Jacob Toppin, highlighting the need for adaptability and the importance of every player on the roster.

The Mavericks look forward to integrating their new additions as they prepare to host Oklahoma City on Saturday, while the Knicks aim to rebound against Indiana on the same day, hoping for healthier days ahead post-All-Star break.

This matchup between the Mavericks and Knicks underscored the impact of trades, injuries, and individual brilliance in the NBA, with Doncic’s masterclass steering Dallas to victory amidst New York’s battle against adversity.

Curry’s Scorching Performance Ignites Warriors to Victory Over Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS – Stephen Curry’s sensational shooting display led the Golden State Warriors to a commanding 131-109 win against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, signaling a strong momentum build within the team’s ranks. Despite the Warriors making no significant moves at the trade deadline, Curry’s performance alone was a statement of intent, as he scored 42 points, with 29 coming in a spectacular first half.

Curry, the Warriors’ talisman, was in sublime form, converting his first seven 3-point attempts and finishing the game with a season-high 11 three-pointers on 16 attempts. His 15 of 22 shooting from the field and fifth 40-point game of the season captivated the Indiana crowd, earning applause for what was described as a masterpiece performance.

The win, marking the Warriors’ third consecutive victory and a successful 4-1 finish to a five-game road trip, comes at a crucial time. The team, which started the night 11th in the Western Conference, showcased the potential to climb the standings, especially with Curry at his best.

Indiana’s Pacers, on the other hand, struggled to contain Curry’s onslaught and to match the Warriors’ intensity across the board. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle attributed the defeat to his team’s lack of hard play compared to the relentless effort shown by the Warriors. Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner led the scoring for the Pacers, with 16 and 15 points, respectively, but it was not enough to challenge the Warriors, especially with All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton having an off night offensively.

Golden State’s depth also shone through, with Jonathan Kuminga adding 18 points off the bench, contributing to a well-rounded team performance that highlighted their potential when firing on all cylinders.

The game also saw an unusual situation with guard Cory Joseph, who was involved in trade deadline day movements, ending up waived by the Pacers after being traded from the Warriors.

As both teams look ahead to their next fixtures, with the Warriors hosting Phoenix and the Pacers visiting New York on Saturday night, the implications of this game will be felt. For the Warriors, Curry’s exceptional form is a beacon of hope for the remainder of the season. For the Pacers, adjustments and a response will be necessary to bounce back from this defeat.

Stephen Curry’s display against the Pacers not only reinforces his status as one of the game’s greatest shooters but also serves as a reminder of the Warriors’ potential threat in the Western Conference, especially with the playoffs on the horizon.

Magic Overcome Vassell’s Explosive Second Half to Secure Win Against Spurs

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Magic demonstrated their offensive prowess and resilience, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 127-111 on Thursday night, despite a remarkable 30-point second-half performance by Spurs’ Devin Vassell. Franz Wagner led the Magic with an impressive 34 points, steering his team to victory in a game that showcased talent and determination from both squads.

Vassell, who had a quiet first half without scoring, erupted for 23 points in the third quarter alone, converting all nine of his attempts. This scoring spree brought the Spurs within striking distance after they had fallen behind by as much as 23 points. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich humorously reflected on a halftime conversation with Vassell, nudging him towards a more aggressive stance that paid dividends in the second half.

However, the Magic, undeterred by the Spurs’ resurgence, orchestrated an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter, spearheaded by Jonathan Isaac, to firmly take control of the game. Additional contributions came from Jalen Suggs with 17 points and Paolo Banchero, who added 16 points alongside five rebounds and six assists, playing pivotal roles in the Magic’s win.

Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ rookie sensation, posted 15 points, three blocks, and one rebound over 23 minutes, showing flashes of his potential despite the team’s overall struggles. The 7-foot-4 newcomer is navigating the challenges of a rigorous NBA schedule, with Popovich noting the learning curve and physical demands faced by the young star. Vassell echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the collective effort needed to ease Wembanyama’s transition and maximize his impact on the court.

The Magic’s sharpshooting was a key factor in their victory, hitting 16 out of 27 attempts from beyond the arc (59.3%), a significant improvement over their season averages. Wagner’s efficiency, going 13 for 17 from the field including 3 of 4 from three-point range, underscored his evolving game and commitment to making smart plays.

Orlando’s overall shooting performance was stellar, with a 59.8% success rate from the field, complemented by a dominating rebounding effort and a high level of teamwork, as evidenced by their 34 assists on 49 field goals.

As the Spurs look ahead to their next game against Brooklyn on Saturday, they will aim to snap their six-game losing streak and build on the positives from this encounter. Meanwhile, the Magic, buoyed by this win, will prepare to host the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, hoping to maintain their momentum and continue refining their cohesive team play.

Australia set up senior World Cup final repeat with dramatic one-wicket win over Pakistan

The ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 final will see Australia facing off against India after the former edged Pakistan in a thrilling contest in Benoni.

If India’s narrow win over South Africa in the first semi-final was not enough, Benoni bore witness to another nail-biter as Australia beat Pakistan by one wicket to join India in the tournament final.

Reduced to nine wickets with 16 runs still required in a run-chase of 180, Pakistan had one foot in the final. However, Australia’s last-wicket pair held their nerve, defying the odds to clinch the match with just five balls remaining, leaving the spectators on the edge of their seats.

The win means that we will have a repeat of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final with U19 World Cup defending champions India  going head to head against Australia.

Australia beat Pakistan by one wicket in Benoni

Pakistan 179 (48.5 overs) beat Australia 181/9 (49.1 overs)

Australia’s captain, Hugh Weibgen, won the toss and opted to put Pakistan in to bat in the crucial semi-final match of the 2024 edition of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, unleashing his pace bowlers on a fresh wicket.

Pakistan’s openers, Shamyl Hussain and Shahzaib Khan, started cautiously against the new ball from Mahli Beardman and Callum Vidler. However, the introduction of Tom Straker as the first change bowler brought immediate success for Australia.

In just his second over, Straker claimed the important wicket of Shamyl Hussain, who attempted an ambitious pull shot only to top-edge it to Oliver Peake, taking a fine catch at mid-on. Shortly after, Shahzaib’s watchful innings came to an end as he miscued a drive off Vidler to Hugh Weibgen at backward point, who held onto a splendid low catch.

With both openers dismissed within the Powerplay, Australia gained a strong foothold in the semi-final. Saad Baig and Azan Awais looked to rebuild for Pakistan and the former was saved by a dropped chance from Harry Dixon at first slip off Straker.

Baig’s luck didn’t last long, though, as Straker had the last laugh in the next over. The seamer found the left-hander’s edge again and this time Dixon hung on to the catch at slip to reduce Pakistan to 43 for three.

After 16 overs dominated by pace, Weibgen introduced spin into the attack. Raf MacMillan responded to his captain’s call by dismissing Ahmad Hassan with a well-pitched delivery that trapped him in front of the stumps.

MacMillan came close to claiming another wicket when Haroon Arshad narrowly survived a stumping chance. However, Beardman’s return to the attack proved fruitful as he dismissed Arshad with a delivery that skidded off the pitch and disturbed the off-stump.

Arafat Minhas joined Azan Awais, and together they revived Pakistan’s innings with a steady partnership. Awais reached his half-century off 83 balls, as the pair steadily increased the scoring rate between overs 31 to 40.

However, Straker ended their partnership by dismissing Awais for 52, caught behind by the wicketkeeper. With Awais departing, Pakistan found themselves in a precarious position at 133 for six, requiring a significant contribution from the lower order.

Minhas carried on unflustered, thumping Vidler off the back foot with a strong pull and bringing out the square cut against the spinner. He reached his half-century off 60 balls, cutting Tom Campbell in front of square for a boundary, but fell next ball when he attempted a loft over cover and sliced it to the deep fielder.

The tailenders couldn’t add too much to the total as Straker ran through them, cleaning up the last two off successive deliveries, to finish with six wickets, as many as he had managed in the entire tournament until today.

Pakistan finished on 179, needing their bowlers to step up big-time to put them in the finals of the tournament.

While Harry Dixon and Sam Konstas got Australia off to a slow, steady start, Pakistan made a roaring comeback after the Powerplay overs.

Fifteen-year-old Ali Raza cleaned up Konstas with a delivery that nipped back in sharply to hit the stumps. Weibgen smashed a full toss straight to short cover off Naveed Khan to depart for four and a massive mix-up between Harjas Singh and Dixon saw the end of the former.

With three wickets falling quickly, Baig turned to strike bowler Ubaid Shah and the move worked. The dangerous Ryan Hicks was bowled off an inside edge for a golden duck as Australia slipped to a tense 59 for four.

Dixon was joined by the left-handed Ollie Peake, who has had to bat only two times in the competition before this. The two left-handers went about rebuilding the innings as Pakistan looked to attack further.

Dixon completed his half-century in the 24th over as Peake settled in at the other end. Minhas’ entry into the attack saw the back of Dixon. The left-arm spinner had the well-set Dixon cleaned up for 50 with a delivery that turned massively back into the batter.

Runs dried up as Minhas and Naveed Khan kept things pretty tight. Raza returned to the attack after Naveed was bowled out and almost instantly found a wicket. Tom Campbell’s edge was found but the ball raced over the keeper for a boundary, the first for Australia in nine overs.

Minhas, meanwhile, continued to bowl unchanged from his end and in his eighth over, the left-arm spinner struck again. Campbell was undone by an arm ball that skidded on with the angle and hit the stumps.

With another threatening stand broken, Pakistan were back into the contest. Australia were still 34 runs away with four wickets left in the bank. Raza found MacMillan’s edge the very next over with the slip fielder diving to take a catch close to the ground. But confirmation for a clean catch wasn’t needed as the ball was over waist height and hence a no-ball.

Peake continued to build, unflustered by the chaos around him, but while on 49, he nicked a harmless Raza delivery, going down the leg-side, through to the wicketkeeper to leave Australia in a tricky position. They were still 25 runs away and Pakistan sensed a way back to win the contest.

Raza added two more in his final over to put Pakistan on the brink of a sensational win, sending back Staker and Beardman to reduce Australia to nine down.

MacMillan continued to fight though and got a lucky top edge over the keeper’s head for four in the 48th over with Australia needing less than 10 runs.

Ubaid Shah almost trapped the lower-order batsman in front in the following over, but the umpire dismissed the appeal, judging the ball to be sliding down the leg-side. Vidler then played out the remaining deliveries, reducing the equation to just three runs needed off the last over.

In a nerve-wracking climax, on the first ball of the final over, MacMillan, who looked to punch off his back foot, got an inside edge and the ball raced through fine leg, securing Australia’s thrilling victory.

Australia now have the opportunity to replicate the success of their senior team from three months ago when they face India in the final on Sunday, 11 February.

Australia skipper Hugh Weibgen stated that he had full confidence in Vidler and MacMillan to successfully finish the run-chase.

“Never in doubt [win]. We had full faith in Vids [Vidler] and Raf [MacMillan] to get the job done. There was quite a bit of emotion in the dressing room. I was quite tense and excited too. I still don’t know what really happened, but it was awesome.”

Pakistan skipper Saad Baig commended Ali Raza for his splendid spell, but remained composed despite the heartbreaking loss.

“It is difficult to be the losing team, but I felt we were 20-30 runs short. The boys played really well. Ali Raza was brilliant. Our bowling was pretty good throughout the tournament. Anyway, one team has to win, one has to lose, that’s the game.”
