Sue Redfern is first ICC-appointed female neutral umpire for a bilateral series

Sue Redfern will become the first International Cricket Council-appointed female neutral umpire to stand in a bilateral series as she has been named for the upcoming ICC Women’s Championship and T20I fixtures between Australia and South Africa.

Redfern’s appointment follows the ICC’s decision to appoint one neutral umpire for all ICC Women’s Championship series as well as any T20I matches scheduled with them, ensuring some neutrality in running matches while also keeping in mind the long-term development of female umpires.

ICC’s General Manager of Cricket, Wasim Khan, sees this as a huge development as more opportunities open for women umpires.

“This is a watershed moment for women’s cricket as we look to both implement a female match officials’ pathway programme and accelerate officiating opportunities for our very best performers. Neutral appointments will give female umpires more exposure to different conditions and will support the learning and development of local female umpires who officiate alongside them.

“Last year we had the first all-female match officials’ panel at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa and so it is important that we build on that momentum through a combination of development and high-quality opportunities.”

The ICC will prioritise female officials for the neutral umpires’ role in ICC Women’s Championship series. The ICC-appointed female umpires will get match-day pay parity with their male counterparts on the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Umpires and receive comparable perks.

The female neutral umpires will be selected on merit and more of them will find themselves in the Emirates ICC International Panel of Umpires in the coming years, as part of ICC’s strategic ambition to advance the involvement and visibility of women both on and off field within the game.

Redfern is confident her appointment will help build momentum and boost the growth of female match officials.

“It’s an honour to be named by the ICC as its first official female neutral umpire and I’m very excited about the upcoming series between Australia and South Africa.

“This is a defining moment for both women’s cricket and female cricket officials, who have worked hard and been given development opportunities in recent years.

“I’ve seen the landscape evolve for female officials and how many are now being recognised and supported across many countries. I am sure this appointment can help build momentum and visibility to help further develop female officials across the world in the future.

“Personally, I would like to thank the ICC and the ECB for their support over the years and I look forward to more such appointments.”

Redfern, who played in six Tests and 15 ODIs for England between 1995 and 1999 including four in the 1997 World Cup in India, has been on the ICC Development Panel of Umpires since 2016. She has officiated in two ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups (2017 and 2022) and three ICC Women’s T20 World Cups (2018, 2022 and 2024).

The Australia vs South Africa matches that Redfern will be officiating in are:

1st T20I, Manuka Oval, Canberra, 27 January
2nd T20I, Manuka Oval, Canberra, 28 January
3rd T20I, Bellerive Oval, Hobart, 30 January

Preview: India ready for German challenge in Semi-Finals of FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024

Ranchi, 17th January 2024: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team is all set to face Germany in the Semi-Final of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 in Ranchi following their 5-1 victory over Italy in their final Pool B match. A win in the Semi-Finals will ensure the Indian team qualification for the Paris Olympics 2024.

The Indian Team started off on the backfoot with a 0-1 loss to USA in their first game in the group stage but came back strongly to beat New Zealand 3-1 in their second game which was a must-win match. They carried their good form into their final group stage game against Italy, whom they comfortably beat 5-1. They will go into the Semi-Finals with their confidence riding high following back-to-back wins after having their backs to the wall after the loss in the first match.

Ahead of the all-important Semi-Final Captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team Savita said, “We’ve already played Germany a few times and have done well. We’re confident in our abilities as a team and have the game to put up a solid performance. Our attacking game is quite good. Germany is a good team so we will have to be on top of our defense and try to convert any chances we get.”

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team which is ranked sixth in the world will take on fifth ranked Germany in the Semi-Final and hope to confirm a place in the Olympics with a win. Despite Germany being the highest ranked team in the tournament and India’s head-to-head record with the Germans not being too favorable, the Indian team will look to draw inspiration from their hard-fought win over their counterparts in the 2021-22 FIH Hockey Pro League played in Bhubaneswar in March 2022.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team Chief Coach Janneke Schopman said, “Germany has a lot of good players but we have a quality side that has shown they can do well under pressure. We are one game away from a spot in the Olympics. We will treat the Semi-Finals like a Final and give it our all.”

India will face Germany in the Semi-Final on 18th January at 1930 hrs IST.

Matches will be live on Sports18 / Jio Cinema.

San Jose Earthquakes Sign Goalkeeper William Yarbrough Through 2024 Season with Option for 2025

January 16, 2024 – The San Jose Earthquakes have strengthened their goalkeeping options by signing veteran goalkeeper William Yarbrough for the 2024 MLS season, with an option for 2025. The signing was announced by the club on Tuesday, following the acquisition of Yarbrough’s rights from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a natural third-round selection in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft.

Yarbrough, 34 years old and a former U.S. international, brings extensive experience to the Earthquakes. He joined the Rapids from Liga MX side Club León in 2020 and has since recorded 33 clean sheets in 101 league appearances. His tenure with Colorado saw him become the first-choice goalkeeper over the past four seasons.

San Jose General Manager Chris Leitch expressed his enthusiasm for Yarbrough’s arrival, highlighting the goalkeeper’s seasoned experience and championship pedigree. Yarbrough’s addition is expected to bring leadership and stability to the Earthquakes’ defense.

The move comes as the Earthquakes look to bolster their squad following a ninth-place finish in the Western Conference last season. With Brazilian goalkeeper Daniel likely to secure the No. 1 spot and JT Marcinkowski out long-term due to a knee injury, Yarbrough’s presence provides much-needed depth and competition in the goalkeeping department.

Yarbrough’s arrival at San Jose marks a new chapter in his career as the Earthquakes, under second-year manager Luchi Gonzalez, aim to improve their standings in the upcoming MLS season. The team is set to begin their 2024 campaign on February 24th against FC Dallas.

LA Galaxy Sign Forward Miguel Berry Through 2025 Season with Option for 2026

January 16, 2024 – The LA Galaxy have completed the signing of forward Miguel Berry for the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with an option for the 2026 season. This move comes after the Galaxy acquired Berry’s player rights from Atlanta United in exchange for LA’s natural second-round pick (No. 33) in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft.

Miguel Berry, 26 years old, has a promising record in MLS, having scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 75 career regular-season matches. His playing career spans across four MLS seasons with teams like the Columbus Crew (2021-22), D.C. United (2022), and most recently, Atlanta United (2023).

The signing of Berry is a strategic move by the Galaxy, following the trade of Preston Judd to the San Jose Earthquakes. Berry is expected to add depth to the Galaxy’s attack, complementing Serbian international and U22 Initiative signing Dejan Joveljić. The Galaxy are also reportedly seeking a Designated Player No. 9 after parting ways with Chicharito.

LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz expressed excitement about working with Berry and is looking forward to adding his attacking experience to the roster. The Galaxy, aiming for a return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, will count on Berry’s contributions to improve upon their last season’s performance, where they finished 13th in the Western Conference.

Berry’s arrival is part of LA Galaxy’s broader strategy to bolster their squad as they seek to make a significant impact in the upcoming MLS season. His experience and potential goal-scoring ability will be key assets as the Galaxy strive to climb back up the Western Conference standings.

Toronto Blue Jays Claim Catcher Brian Serven Off Waivers from Chicago Cubs

January 16, 2024 – The Toronto Blue Jays have bolstered their catching depth by claiming Brian Serven off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Serven, a 28-year-old right-handed hitter, brings both Major League and Minor League experience to the Blue Jays’ roster.

In the previous season, Serven appeared in 11 games for the Colorado Rockies and played 38 games with their Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 207 pounds, Serven is known for his skills behind the plate and his potential with the bat.

Originally drafted by Colorado in the 5th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, Serven made his Major League debut with the Rockies in 2022. Over his career, he has played in 73 big-league games, bringing a mix of experience and potential to the Blue Jays. Additionally, his 377 Minor League games have provided him with valuable playing time and development opportunities.

The Toronto Blue Jays’ acquisition of Serven from the Cubs comes after he was claimed off waivers by Chicago earlier this month. His move to Toronto signifies the Blue Jays’ intent to strengthen their squad, particularly in the catching position, as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Serven’s arrival in Toronto will be watched closely by Blue Jays fans and baseball analysts, as the team looks to enhance its lineup and depth chart heading into the 2024 season. With his background and potential, Serven could prove to be a valuable asset for the Blue Jays both on and off the field.

Road to Paris reaches crunch time as teams race into semi-finals – while some see campaigns in the balance

Lausanne, Switzerland: A whole host of sides booked their place in the semi-finals as the pool stages came to a close for many teams. In Ranchi, Germany and Japan took the top 2 spots in Pool A, and continue their qualifying journey. Pool B was also decided with the USA and India making it through. Over in Valencia Spain and Great Britain advanced to the next stage in Pool B and in Pool A it was Belgium and Ireland that progressed. Action in Oman saw the men’s qualifying campaigns left on a cliffhanger. In both Pool’s 3 out of the 4 sides can still make the semi-finals.

Ranchi (W)

German stalwart Anne Schröder celebrated her 200th cap with a 10-0 victory over Czechia and qualification to the semi-finals in the first action of the day. Despite stern Czech defence in the first quarter the Germans found their scoring boots from the second period onward, scoring freely throughout, with 5 field goals, 2 penalty strokes and 3 penalty corner strikes. In the other match from Pool A Japan secured a semi-final berth with a 2-0 victory over Chile. Strikes in the first and second quarters did the damage for the Cherry Blossoms who put on a professional display in the final pool game.

Germany top Pool A in Ranchi with 7 points, with a plus 13 goal difference. Japan follow them into the semi-finals, also finishing on 7 points. Chile finished in 3rd place with 3 points while Czechia finished in 4th without registering a point.

The USA completed a perfect pool stage with 3 wins from 3 thanks to a 1-0 win over New Zealand. Elizabeth Yeager’s strike from a penalty corner was enough to seal the 3 points for the US – who progress to the semi-finals. In her 100th appearance for India Udita scored twice as the hosts brushed aside Italy – registering a 5-1 victory to bring the Pool stage in Ranchi to a close. India established control early in the tie – scoring inside the first minute. 2 more strikes were added in the third and fourth quarters – with Italy grabbing a consolation in the fourth period.

These results mean the USA finish top of Pool B thanks to their 9 point haul. India qualify for the semi-finals in second on 6 points, with New Zealand missing out in third, on 3 points. Italy finish rock bottom of the Pool with 0 points.

Muscat (M)

Qualifying action got underway in Muscat with a thrilling contest just edged by Chile – who beat Canada 3-2. The win hands La Roja their first 3 points of the tournament and keeps their hopes of the semi-finals very much alive. In Pool B’s other encounter New Zealand and Germany shared the points in a topsy-turvy clash, ending 2-2. New Zealand took the lead inside the first minute of the game but the Germans rallied back to take a 2-1 lead into half-time. The Black Sticks secured a point through Hayden Phillips’ 43rd minute strike.

The day’s results mean Pool B  is on a knife-edge, with 3 out of the 4 sides still in with a chance of semi-final qualification. Germany lead the way on goal difference with New Zealand in second – both sides have 4 points. Chile sit in 3rd with their destiny in their own hands – taking on Germany in the final pool game.

Pakistan kicked off the day’s Pool A action with a testing 2-0 win over China. In what was a tightly contested match up it took until the third quarter for the deadlock to be broken – via a 42nd minute penalty corner strike. The win was secured for Pakistan by an Abdul Rehman strike with 9 minutes to go. In the final game of the day in Oman Great Britain overcame a stubborn Malaysia to make it 2 wins from 2 and sit top of the Pool and all but secure their place in the semi-finals. The sides scrapped away in the first half – and went into the break level at 1-1. However, 2 goals from GB in the third period set the tone and once one more was added in the final quarter the game ended in a 4-1 win for the Brits.

There’s still plenty of chances in Pool A – with 3 sides gunning for the second qualification spot.Great Britain sit top of the pool with 6 points and a far superior goal difference to their rivals of plus 5. China currently occupy second with 3 points and a minus 1 goal difference. Waiting to pounce in third are Pakistan with 3 points while Malaysia sit in fourth on 0 points, but their dreams of the semi-finals are still just alive.

Valencia (W)

Hosts Spain turned a 1-0 final quarter deficit into a rampant 5-1 victory over Canada in Valencia’s opening game of the day. The Canadians took the lead in the first quarter and held firm until the final period when the home fans were treated to a clinical display in front of goal by the Spanish. The result sees Spain top Pool B and qualify for the semi-finals. Giselle Ansley celebrated her 100th Great Britain cap with 2 strikes – as a second quarter blitz from her side blew away Malaysia 8-1. A goalless first quarter was followed up by a 6 goal second, all scored by GB. To their credit Malaysia tightened up at the back for the rest of the clash, with Great Britain struggling to find the back of the net with the fluency of the crazy second quarter. One more score was added in the third period and Malaysia struck first in the final 15 minutes – before one final goal from GB’s Hannah French rounded out an 8-1 victory.

With Spain securing their third straight victory it means they finish top of Pool B in Valencia with 9 points. They are followed into the semi-finals by Great Britain who finished on 6 points – Canada miss out in third with 3 points while Malaysia finish bottom of the group with 0 points.

5 goals from Ambre Ballenghien helped Belgium to a dominant 12-0 win over Ukraine in Pool A. The Red Panthers took the lead inside the first quarter and never looked back. They scored multiple goals in the following periods – culminating in a big win for a side that had already secured their place in the semi-finals. On the other side of Pool A Ireland secured the points against a stern Korea. A goalless first half showed how cagey this one was going to be with qualification for the semi-final on the line. Sarah Hawkshaw eventually broke the deficit for the Irish just after halftime – with the lead doubled heading into the final quarter. Korea did threaten a comeback when they opened the scoring in the final 15, but a Roisin Upton penalty stroke settled the nerves and secured 3 points and a spot in the semi-finals.

The results mean Pool A finished with Belgium atop the group on 7 points and a massive plus 22 goal difference. Ireland follow them through to the semi-finals also finishing on 7 points but behind the Belgians on goal difference. Korea finish third with 3 points from their sole win while Ukraine end the stage bottom without a point.

Namibia Secures Historic 1-0 Victory Over Tunisia in AFCON Group E Opener

Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire: Namibia pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations history, defeating 2004 champions Tunisia 1-0 in a dramatic Group E opener on Tuesday. The victory, sealed by a late goal from Deon Hotto in the 89th minute, marked a momentous occasion for the southern African nation, giving them an excellent start in the tournament.

The match was a tightly contested affair, with both sides displaying defensive resilience. In a first half that saw few clear-cut chances, Namibia and Tunisia battled for dominance, but neither side could break the deadlock. The Carthage Eagles, despite controlling possession, struggled to find a way through Namibia’s well-organized defense led by Ivan Kamberipa.

Tunisian captain Youssef Msakni tested Namibian goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua with a curled shot, but the Brave Warriors’ disciplined approach kept the Tunisian attacks at bay. As the game progressed, Tunisia’s frustration grew, while Namibia maintained their focus and tactical discipline.

The breakthrough for Namibia came in the dying moments of the match. Hotto capitalized on a long ball over the defense, showing great pace and composure to slot the ball past Tunisian goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said. His second goal was disallowed for offside, but the single goal was enough to secure a historic win.

Namibia’s victory, their first in Africa Cup of Nations history, came in their tenth game in the competition (D2 L7). The win places them at the top of Group E with three points, as South Africa prepares to play Mali in the group’s other match.

For Tunisia, the defeat is a significant setback, continuing their trend of failing to win their opening games in the last five AFCONs. The Carthage Eagles will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming match against Mali on January 20, while Namibia faces regional rivals South Africa on January 21.

This shock victory over one of Africa’s football giants not only gives Namibia a good chance of progressing from Group E but also sends a strong message to other teams in the tournament about their capabilities and determination.

Mali Dominates South Africa with a Convincing 2-0 Win in AFCON Opener

Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire: Mali made a strong statement in their opening game of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023, with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa in Tuesday’s Group E match. The win was marked by goals from Sekou Koita and Lassine Sinayoko, showcasing Mali’s offensive prowess and defensive solidity.

The match began with both teams trading opportunities, demonstrating an open and attacking style of play. Mali had an early chance to take the lead, but Sinayoko’s attempt was thwarted by a reflex save from South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. At the other end, Percy Tau created a promising chance for South Africa but was denied by Mali’s goalkeeper Djigui Diarra.

A pivotal moment came in the 19th minute when Tau missed a penalty awarded by VAR, sending his shot over the bar. This missed opportunity proved costly for South Africa as Mali increased their pressure in the second half.

Mali’s breakthrough came an hour into the game when Hamari Traore capitalized on a chance to score the opening goal. Five minutes later, Sinayoko doubled Mali’s lead with a low shot, securing a comfortable margin for his team.

South Africa attempted a late rally, with Themba Zwane’s free-kick striking the woodwork, but they were unable to find the back of the net, ultimately falling to defeat.

The victory places Mali at the top of Group E on goal difference, sharing the lead with Namibia, who earlier secured a surprising win over Tunisia. Mali’s performance, highlighted by quality players like Yves Bissouma, Amadou Haidara, and Koita, positions them as a team with the potential to make a deep run in the tournament.

This result sets the tone for an exciting and competitive Africa Cup of Nations, with teams like Mali demonstrating their capability to deliver high-quality football and challenge for the title.

The victory was marked by late goals from Abdulrahman Ghareeb and Ali Al Bulayhi, overturning Oman’s lead that lasted for over an hour.

The match was a testament to Saudi Arabia’s resilience, as they secured their first three points in the group stage. Despite Oman’s strong performance for the majority of the game, the Saudis’ late resurgence proved decisive.

Abdulrahman Ghareeb played a pivotal role in the comeback, his goal leveling the score and setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Ali Al Bulayhi then delivered the winning strike, ensuring a hard-fought victory for the Saudi team.

The match was characterized by intense competition and strategic gameplay, with both teams showcasing their strengths. Oman’s initial lead put pressure on Saudi Arabia, but the Saudi team’s persistence and tactical adjustments in the latter stages of the game paid off.

The victory is crucial for Saudi Arabia’s campaign in the AFC Asian Cup, providing a boost of confidence and momentum as they continue in the tournament. The team demonstrated their capability to handle pressure and perform in critical moments, qualities essential for success in high-stakes competitions.

For Oman, despite the defeat, there were positive aspects to their performance, particularly in how they managed to control the game for significant periods. They will look to build on these strengths in their upcoming matches.

McLeod’s Late Goal Secures Oilers’ 11th Straight Win in 4-2 Victory Over Maple Leafs

EDMONTON, AB – Ryan McLeod played the hero for the Edmonton Oilers, scoring the decisive goal with just over three minutes remaining in the third period, as the Oilers rallied to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 at Rogers Place on Tuesday. This win marked Edmonton’s 11th consecutive victory, underscoring their remarkable run of form.

McLeod’s goal, which saw him collect a rebound behind the net and then fire a wrist shot past Martin Jones, was a critical moment in a tightly contested game. McLeod, who also had an assist, returned to the lineup after missing a game due to illness and made an immediate impact.

The Oilers’ comeback was also fueled by goals from Derek Ryan, Leon Draisaitl, and an empty-netter by Evan Bouchard. Goalie Stuart Skinner contributed to the win with 25 saves. Draisaitl praised the team’s composure and maturity, attributing their late-game successes to a growing confidence and trust within the squad.

The Maple Leafs, despite a strong start that included Auston Matthews scoring just 27 seconds into the first period, couldn’t hold onto their lead. Matthews’ goal, his NHL-leading 34th of the season, and a second-period goal from Morgan Rielly gave Toronto a 2-0 lead before the Oilers’ comeback.

Mitchell Marner and Pontus Holmberg provided assists for the Maple Leafs, with Marner highlighting the team’s solid play but acknowledging the need to maintain leads and execute better in crucial moments. Goalie Martin Jones made 28 saves in a valiant effort for Toronto.

The Oilers demonstrated resilience, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second period. Draisaitl’s goal late in the second period began the turnaround, followed by Ryan’s tying goal early in the third, set up brilliantly by McLeod.

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe expressed frustration at the inability to secure wins despite leading, especially against a high-caliber team like Edmonton. The Maple Leafs have faced challenges in closing out games, an area they aim to improve as the season progresses.

For the Oilers, the win continues their impressive streak, showcasing their ability to come from behind and win games in dramatic fashion. Key contributions came from McDavid, who extended his point streak, and Draisaitl, who was effective in face-offs and scoring.

As the Oilers look to extend their winning streak, the Maple Leafs will focus on capitalizing on their strong starts and maintaining leads in future games.

Sharangovich’s OT Winner Propels Flames Past Coyotes 3-2

CALGARY, AB – Yegor Sharangovich’s dramatic power-play goal in the final seconds of overtime lifted the Calgary Flames to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over the Arizona Coyotes at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday. Sharangovich’s precise shot over Connor Ingram’s shoulder clinched the win for the Flames, who have now won four straight games for the first time this season.

The overtime period was tense, with Dan Vladar making a crucial glove save on Logan Cooley’s breakaway attempt, setting the stage for Sharangovich’s heroics. Blake Coleman praised Sharangovich’s shot and Vladar’s key save, highlighting the importance of seizing such moments in tight games.

Nazem Kadri, with a goal and an assist, continued his impressive form for the Flames, contributing significantly to the team’s recent success. Vladar, stepping in for the injured Jacob Markstrom, made 23 saves in a solid performance.

The Coyotes, despite a strong showing from Sean Durzi with a goal and an assist, and 27 saves by Ingram, couldn’t hold onto their lead. Durzi emphasized the importance of points at this stage of the season, especially in tight playoff races, and the need to move on quickly from such losses.

Calgary’s comeback began in the third period when Coleman slid a shot past Ingram, followed by Kadri’s equalizer off a splendid cross-crease pass from Martin P

ospisil. Kadri’s goal, his tenth point in a seven-game streak, underscored the Flames’ resilience and determination to fight back into the game.

Arizona initially took the lead in the second period through Durzi’s slap shot, and Cooley extended the lead early in the third, tapping in a pass from Durzi. However, the Flames’ relentless pressure and offensive prowess in the latter stages of the game turned the tide in their favor.

The match was not without its challenges for both teams. The Flames had to adjust to Vladar in goal due to Markstrom’s injury, while the Coyotes suffered a setback when Nick Schmaltz left the game with an undisclosed injury. Additionally, the Flames were without forward Jonathan Huberdeau, sidelined due to illness.

The victory is significant for the Flames as they continue to push for a playoff spot, demonstrating their ability to rally from behind and win crucial games. For the Coyotes, despite the loss, there were positive takeaways, including Durzi’s performance and Clayton Keller extending his point streak.

As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on their respective strengths and address areas of improvement, with the Flames aiming to extend their winning streak and the Coyotes seeking to bounce back in their upcoming games.

Mrazek Shines in Blackhawks’ 2-1 Shootout Win Over Sharks

CHICAGO, IL – Petr Mrazek delivered a stellar performance with 37 saves, including eight in the shootout, leading the Chicago Blackhawks to a narrow 2-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks at the United Center on Tuesday. Mrazek’s heroics in goal were crucial for the Blackhawks, who have been seeking a spark in their challenging season.

Chicago’s Cole Guttman scored the only regulation goal for the Blackhawks, while Rem Pitlick and Boris Katchouk secured the win in the tiebreaker. The Sharks, enduring a tough stretch with 15 losses in their last 16 games, saw Mackenzie Blackwood make 24 saves in a valiant effort.

Mrazek, starting his fifth consecutive game, expressed his enjoyment of shootouts and his confidence in playing consistently. His impactful return has been a positive development for the Blackhawks.

The game saw Guttman giving the Blackhawks an early lead with a power-play goal in the first period, capitalizing on a fortunate deflection off a Sharks defenseman. Despite the Sharks’ efforts, including a notable performance from Fabian Zetterlund with eight shots on goal, they couldn’t find the back of the net in regulation time.

The Sharks tied the game in the third period through Ryan Carpenter, set up by Justin Bailey’s excellent work behind the net. Carpenter praised Bailey’s speed and work ethic, highlighting the importance of winning puck battles.

Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson commended Mrazek for his leadership and energy, not just in goal but also in his interactions with the team, especially during the shootout.

The Sharks completed their five-game road trip with a 1-3-1 record, including a win against the Montreal Canadiens to snap a 12-game losing streak. Coach David Quinn emphasized the need for emotion and passion in the team’s play, acknowledging the challenges of a losing streak but praising the team’s effort against the Blackhawks.

The game also saw injuries to key players from both teams. Sharks center Mikael Granlund left the game after a hard check, and Blackhawks defenseman Nikita Zaitsev did not return for the third period due to an undisclosed injury.

Guttman’s goal highlights the contribution of Chicago’s rookies this season, tying them with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the most rookie goals in the NHL.

The Blackhawks, with this win, will aim to build momentum and continue their development, particularly from their younger players. The Sharks, facing a tough season, will look to regroup and find ways to turn their fortunes around, starting with their upcoming fixtures.

Connor’s Return Sparks Jets to 4-2 Victory Over Islanders

WINNIPEG, MB – Kyle Connor marked his return with a crucial empty-net goal, securing the Winnipeg Jets a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders at the Canada Life Centre on Tuesday. Connor, who had been sidelined for 16 games due to a knee injury, demonstrated his impact immediately, capping the Jets’ victory in the final minutes.

The game was also highlighted by the contributions of Gabriel Vilardi, Neal Pionk, and Mason Appleton, each netting a goal for the Jets. Their collective effort helped Winnipeg bounce back from a 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, which had snapped their impressive eight-game winning streak and 14-game point streak. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s 35 saves were crucial in maintaining the Jets’ lead throughout the game.

Appleton emphasized the importance of returning to winning ways after a loss, praising the team’s resilience and determination against a disciplined Islanders squad. The victory reinforced the Jets’ strong home record and their ability to avoid consecutive defeats.

The Islanders, despite a solid performance from captain Anders Lee, who scored twice, and goalie Ilya Sorokin’s 40 saves, couldn’t break their losing streak, now extended to three games. New York coach Lane Lambert acknowledged the team’s competitiveness against a top-tier Jets team but lamented the unfortunate circumstances, including a broken skate blade that led to one of the Jets’ goals.

Vilardi’s opening goal for the Jets set the tone for the game, a fortunate deflection giving Winnipeg the early lead. The Islanders responded with Lee’s power-play goal, showcasing their ability to capitalize on opportunities.

The game’s pivotal moment came in the second period when Pionk scored on a power play after Sorokin lost his skate blade, preventing him from getting back into position. This stroke of bad luck for the Islanders was a turning point, with Appleton later extending the Jets’ lead with a goal characterized by his persistence around the net.

Lee’s early goal in the third period brought the Islanders within one, but Connor’s late empty-netter sealed the win for Winnipeg.

The match saw several individual milestones, with Adam Lowry continuing his scoring run for the Jets and Lee maintaining his impressive record against Winnipeg. The Islanders, missing forward Pierre Engvall due to injury, will look to regroup and address their recent challenges.

The Jets’ victory, fueled by Connor’s successful return and the team’s overall depth, keeps them on track as one of the top contenders in their division. As they continue to build on this performance, the Islanders will seek to find solutions to turn their fortunes around in upcoming games.

Stars Dominate Kings 5-1 with Strong Third Period Performance

DALLAS, TX – The Dallas Stars showcased their offensive prowess in a commanding 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at the American Airlines Center on Tuesday. The Stars’ balanced attack was led by Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston, and Evgenii Dadonov, each contributing a goal and an assist, propelling Dallas to their fourth win in the last five games.

Jason Dickinson’s two assists and Jake Oettinger’s impressive 31-save performance were pivotal in the Stars’ dominant display, pushing their season record to 26-12-5. Dallas coach Peter DeBoer emphasized the team’s execution of their game plan, taking advantage of a Kings team at the end of a grueling six-game road trip.

Despite Drew Doughty scoring for the Kings and Cam Talbot’s 23 saves, Los Angeles struggled to find their rhythm, extending their challenging streak to only one win in their last 10 games. The Kings’ Trevor Lewis acknowledged the team’s current difficulties, emphasizing the need to persevere and learn from this tough phase.

Dallas’ new top line, comprising Hintz, Robertson, and Johnston, made an immediate impact, with Hintz scoring off Robertson’s feed in the first period. Johnston praised Hintz’s ability to find and create space, highlighting his impact on the game.

Dadonov’s goal, albeit fortuitous with the puck deflecting off Kings defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov’s skate, gave the Stars a crucial two-goal lead. The Kings’ response came from Doughty on a power play early in the second period, but it wasn’t enough to swing the momentum.

Johnston’s third-period wrist shot, set up by Hintz and Robertson, further extended the Stars’ lead. Coach DeBoer’s strategy to place Johnston on the top line paid dividends, providing the young forward with more offensive opportunities.

Joe Pavelski and Sam Steel added to the Stars’ tally, with Pavelski scoring off a rebound and Steel netting a short-handed goal on a 2-on-1 break. Radek Faksa, assisting on Steel’s goal, reflected on the importance of patience and capitalizing on opportunities, even against power plays.

The Stars have proven their strength in third periods, scoring a league-best 64 goals in the final frame this season. Their ability to wear down opponents, especially in back-to-back scenarios, was evident against the Kings.

Notable achievements in the game included Robertson reaching 30 assists for the third consecutive season, Faksa’s plus-3 performance in his 600th NHL game, and Pavelski’s continued point streak. Additionally, Doughty’s goal marked a significant milestone, placing him as the second Kings defenseman in history to score 150 goals.

The Stars’ comprehensive victory over the Kings underlines their ability to execute game plans effectively and capitalize on their scoring opportunities, particularly in critical periods of the game. As Dallas continues to build momentum, the Kings will look to regroup and address their recent struggles to get back on track.

Kuemper’s Shutout Leads Capitals to 2-0 Win Over Ducks

WASHINGTON, DC – The Washington Capitals clinched a convincing 2-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Capital One Arena on Tuesday, with standout performances from goaltender Darcy Kuemper and defenseman Ethan Bear. Kuemper’s shutout, his first of the season, included 12 crucial saves in the third period, playing a pivotal role in the Capitals’ win.

Bear, who recently signed a two-year contract with the Capitals, opened the scoring with his first goal of the season during 4-on-4 play late in the first period. His goal, a culmination of an opportunistic play following a deflection off T.J. Oshie, showcased his ability to contribute offensively from the blue line.

Washington’s Tom Wilson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, emphasizing the Capitals’ tactical strength in closing out games. Despite missing star forward Alex Ovechkin due to a lower-body injury, the team demonstrated their depth, with players like Evgeny Kuznetsov stepping up in his absence.

John Gibson, the Ducks’ goaltender, made 26 saves in a commendable effort, keeping the game within reach despite the Ducks playing the second of a back-to-back set. Anaheim’s defensive performance was noted by coach Greg Cronin, who acknowledged the team’s solid defensive play but lamented their inability to convert opportunities into goals.

Kuemper’s performance was particularly highlighted by a key save against Alex Killorn late in the third period, showcasing his reflexes and athleticism. His contribution was a critical factor in the Capitals’ ability to maintain their lead and secure the shutout.

The Ducks, struggling with consistency, played without defenseman Radko Gudas due to injury and saw forward Frank Vatrano’s point streak come to an end. Meanwhile, the Capitals’ penalty kill was effective, going 2-for-2 on the night and extending their streak of not allowing a power-play goal to four games.

This win reinforces the Capitals’ strong record when scoring two or more goals, now standing at 20-2-5 for the season. As they prepare to host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, the Capitals will look to build on this performance, particularly their defensive solidity and opportunistic scoring. The Ducks, on the other hand, will aim to find greater offensive consistency and capitalize on their chances in upcoming games.

Rantanen’s Brace Spurs Avalanche’s 7-4 Comeback Win Over Senators

OTTAWA, ON – Mikko Rantanen’s two-goal performance was central to the Colorado Avalanche’s exhilarating 7-4 comeback victory against the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday. This win highlights the Avalanche’s resilience, marking their fourth in the past five games and bouncing back from a narrow 4-3 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens the previous day.

Nathan MacKinnon extended his impressive point streak to nine games with two assists, contributing to the team’s offensive surge. Defenseman Samuel Girard also played a crucial role, providing three assists in a game where the Avalanche demonstrated their depth and scoring ability.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3_phe8MMjU

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar acknowledged the team’s initial struggle in the match, citing a lack of energy and defensive lapses. However, he praised the team’s effort in ramping up their intensity, leading to a series of timely goals that turned the game in their favor.

The Avalanche showcased their resilience and scoring prowess with five unanswered goals after trailing 4-2 midway through the second period. This remarkable turnaround mirrors a similar comeback pattern against the Senators in their previous encounter in December.

For Colorado, Jason Polin celebrated his first NHL goal, and goalie Justus Annunen made 36 saves in his season debut. Annunen’s growing confidence throughout the game and his adaptation to the NHL’s pace were crucial for the Avalanche’s defensive efforts.

The Senators, led by captain Brady Tkachuk and veteran Claude Giroux, each with three assists, initially held a promising lead. Ridly Greig’s two goals and Jake Sanderson’s goal and assist underscored their offensive capabilities. However, the Senators’ inability to maintain their momentum and intensity for the full 60 minutes was a significant factor in their loss, as noted by Tkachuk.

Ottawa’s Mads Sogaard, making his season debut, faced a challenging night with 27 saves against a relentless Avalanche offense. Senators coach Jacques Martin pointed out the mental aspects of the game, emphasizing the need for building resistance and performing under pressure.

Rantanen’s crucial goals, including a snap shot off

a cross-ice pass from MacKinnon, were pivotal in reducing the deficit and igniting the Avalanche’s comeback. His consistency and impact were evident, maintaining his own nine-game point streak.

The Avalanche’s third-period surge was marked by goals from Miles Wood, Sam Malinski, and Logan O’Connor, demonstrating their ability to capitalize on opportunities and shift the game’s momentum. Wood’s goal, particularly noteworthy for its individual effort, and Malinski’s power-play strike exemplified Colorado’s multi-faceted attack.

Ottawa’s Drake Batherson initially gave the Senators an early lead with a power-play goal, showcasing their potential to challenge top teams. However, Colorado’s resilient response and offensive firepower ultimately overwhelmed the Senators.

The game was a display of several individual milestones and team strengths. MacKinnon’s continued scoring prowess tied him for the NHL scoring lead, highlighting his status as one of the league’s premier players. The Avalanche’s spread of scoring, with eleven players recording at least one point, and Devon Toews’ late empty-netter underscored their depth and collaborative effort.

For the Senators, Greig’s first multi-goal NHL game was a bright spot, indicating his growing confidence and skill at the professional level.

In a season marked by dramatic comebacks, Colorado’s latest win reinforces their status as a formidable contender, capable of overturning deficits and showcasing their depth and resilience. The Senators, despite the loss, demonstrated flashes of brilliance and will look to build on those positive aspects in their upcoming fixtures.

Kakko Scores in Rangers’ 5-2 Win Over Kraken

NEW YORK, NY – The New York Rangers secured a solid 5-2 victory against the Seattle Kraken at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, bolstered by Kaapo Kakko’s first goal since November and a stellar performance from goalie Igor Shesterkin.

Kakko, returning from a 21-game absence due to a lower-body injury, found the back of the net in his second game back, contributing to the Rangers’ offensive prowess. His return and subsequent goal provide a much-needed boost for the team, as he aims to regain his form from before the injury.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja2R2ggSSS8

Shesterkin, continuing his impressive form, made 29 saves, contributing significantly to the Rangers’ success. This performance marks his second consecutive win, demonstrating his resilience after a brief slump. His ability to effectively read and intercept shots played a crucial role in the Rangers’ defensive strategy.

Blake Wheeler’s two goals and Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox’s dual assists were pivotal in securing the win for the Rangers, who now stand at 28-13-2. Their collective effort highlighted the team’s depth and versatility.

The Kraken, despite their recent successful streak, couldn’t sustain their momentum, suffering their second consecutive loss. Standout performances from Jalen Williams, who scored 25 points, and Lu Dort and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, each adding 19, weren’t enough to overcome the Rangers’ robust defense and strategic play.

A key moment came when the Rangers responded swiftly to a Kraken goal, with Erik Gustafsson scoring shortly after to regain the lead. This ability to quickly counter the opposition’s momentum shifts was a testament to the Rangers’ mental toughness and game management.

Despite missing key players like Vince Dunn, Matty Beniers, and

Andre Burakovsky, all day-to-day with various injuries, and battling illness within the team, the Kraken showed resilience. However, their failure to capitalize on critical opportunities, as noted by coach Dave Hakstol, proved costly in the face of the Rangers’ efficiency.

The Rangers showcased their offensive depth and strategic play throughout the game. Vincent Trocheck’s early power-play goal set the tone, despite a brief equalizer from the Kraken’s Jordan Eberle. The Rangers’ ability to consistently respond to the Kraken’s challenges, notably Wheeler’s netfront deflection and Kakko’s one-timer from a well-executed play involving Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, underlined their tactical acumen.

Kakko’s goal, a result of excellent team play and his positioning in the slot, was a highlight. His optimism about regaining form and confidence after scoring is a positive sign for the Rangers moving forward.

The Kraken’s Jared McCann did manage to narrow the gap with a power-play goal in the third period, but Wheeler’s empty-net goal sealed the 5-2 victory for the Rangers.

The game also saw significant milestones, with Artemi Panarin matching his previous season’s scoring pace and Adam Fox reaching a notable mark as a defenseman in his first five seasons with the team.

With this win, the Rangers continue to build momentum, while the Kraken, still performing admirably on their longest road trip of the season, look ahead to their next challenge against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. The Rangers’ effective combination of offensive firepower and solid goaltending makes them a formidable force as the season progresses.

Paul George Powers Clippers to 128-117 Victory Over Thunder

LOS ANGELES, CA – Paul George’s stellar fourth-quarter performance, where he scored 18 of his season-high 38 points, propelled the Los Angeles Clippers to a 128-117 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night. This victory marks the Clippers’ ninth in their last 11 games, a testament to their rising form in the league.

The Clippers, buoyed by contributions from Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, who added 16 points each, had more reasons to celebrate as Commissioner Adam Silver announced the hosting of the 2026 All-Star Game at their new arena in Inglewood, where they will begin play next season.

The Thunder, currently the West’s No. 2 team, faced a setback with this loss, their second in a row after a strong run of nine wins in 12 games prior to their LA visit. Jalen Williams led the Thunder’s scoring with 25 points, while Lu Dort and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander each chipped in with 19 points.

The game saw a dramatic shift in the third quarter when the Thunder, overcoming a 13-point deficit, surged ahead 115-114 on Williams’ 3-pointer. However, Paul George’s commanding presence in the final stretch was pivotal for the Clippers. George’s 11 points in the closing moments, highlighted by two 3-pointers and a stunning steal-and-dunk sequence, underscored his impact as a game-changer.

The Thunder had briefly narrowed the gap to 79-77 in the third quarter, fueled by a 9-0 run featuring Isaiah Joe’s 3-pointers. Nonetheless, the Clippers responded assertively with a 20-12 run, capped off by Daniel Theis and Norman Powell’s consecutive 3s, to enter the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead.

In the absence of center Ivica Zubac, sidelined with a right calf strain, Mason Plumlee stepped up in his first start of the season, contributing 14 points in place of Zubac, who is set to be re-evaluated in a month.

Looking ahead, the Thunder aim to bounce back as they face the Utah Jazz on Thursday, while the Clippers gear up for a significant matchup against the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday.

Durant Seals Suns’ Stunning Comeback Over Kings 119-117

PHOENIX, AZ – In a remarkable display of resilience, the Phoenix Suns, led by Kevin Durant’s crucial free throws, overcame a significant deficit to defeat the Sacramento Kings 119-117 on Tuesday night. The Suns, trailing by 17 points late in the game, engineered a remarkable 23-4 run to clinch the victory.

Durant, who contributed 27 points, played a pivotal role in the Suns’ comeback, including sinking two free throws with just 1.8 seconds left on the clock. His performance, coupled with Grayson Allen’s exceptional showing, where he tied a franchise record with nine 3-pointers and scored 29 points, was central to the Suns’ success.

The game, which Durant described as a “blur,” saw the Suns shift gears dramatically in the final quarter. Their strategic adjustments, especially in pressuring Kings’ Domantas Sabonis and forcing Sacramento to shift to a more individualistic playstyle, were crucial in turning the tide.

Devin Booker’s contribution was notable, with 16 points and 11 assists, alongside Bradley Beal’s 13 points and Jusuf Nurkic’s double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds. The Suns’ collective effort was epitomized in the critical moments of the fourth quarter, highlighting their depth and resilience.

The Kings, despite leading by 22 points with just over eight minutes to play, could not stave off the Suns’ intense comeback. Durant’s pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter ignited the rally, further fueled by Eric Gordon’s back-to-back 3-pointers, tying the game at 115. Gordon’s clutch performance off the bench, scoring 13 points, was a testament to the Suns’ depth.

Suns coach Frank Vogel praised his team’s mental fortitude, acknowledging the modern NBA’s unpredictability and the capability of teams to overturn substantial deficits. Durant’s late free throws, which gave the Suns their first lead since the opening minutes, were decisive, despite De’Aaron Fox’s attempt to keep the Kings in contention with a game-high 33 points.

The Kings’ Domantas Sabonis marked another milestone with his 11th triple-double of the season, while Keegan Murray, Sasha Vezenkov, and Malik Monk made significant contributions. However, their efforts were overshadowed by the Suns’ astonishing comeback.

Kings coach Mike Brown reflected on the loss, highlighting the need for his team to maintain their offensive fluidity and learn from their mistakes in the game’s crucial stages.

Looking ahead, the Kings face a quick turnaround as they host Indiana on Thursday, while the Suns take their winning momentum on the road to face New Orleans on Friday.

Embiid Triumphs in MVP Duel as 76ers Edge Nuggets 126-121

PHILADELPHIA, PA – In a gripping clash of basketball titans, Joel Embiid led the Philadelphia 76ers to a thrilling 126-121 victory over Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. Embiid, showcasing his elite talent, racked up 41 points and 10 assists in a dazzling display of skill and determination.

The match, billed as a showdown between the last two NBA MVPs, lived up to its hype with Embiid and Jokic delivering performances befitting their reputations. Jokic, not to be outdone, put up a resilient fight with 25 points and a remarkable 19 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass.

Embiid’s respect for his counterpart was evident post-game, as he hailed Jokic as “the best player in the league”, acknowledging his NBA Finals MVP status and championship pedigree. However, Embiid’s confidence in his abilities was unwavering, as he continued his pursuit to reach the pinnacle of NBA success.

The 76ers’ supporting cast played a crucial role in securing the win. Tyrese Maxey contributed significantly with 25 points, while Tobias Harris added 24, ensuring the team’s offensive firepower was on full display. Embiid’s late-game heroics, including a pivotal three-point play and a triumphant 3-pointer, extended the Sixers’ lead and underscored their potential as a championship contender when their star player is in prime form.

The game had its tense moments, notably when Embiid fouled Michael Porter Jr. on a three-point attempt late in the game. Porter’s successful free throws brought the Nuggets within striking distance, but the 76ers managed to hold on as time ran out, quashing any hopes of a Denver comeback.

Jokic, ever the competitor, stressed the team aspect of the matchup, focusing on playing against the 76ers rather than an individual duel with Embiid. His leadership and performance continue to solidify his status as a premier player in the league.

This high-octane encounter was a spectacle from start to finish, with both teams locked in a 78-all tie at halftime and displaying an intense, fast-paced style of play. The star power of Embiid and Jokic, coupled with significant contributions from players like Maxey, Murray, and Harris, made for an unforgettable night of basketball.

76ers coach Nick Nurse’s pre-game anticipation of a memorable game proved prophetic, as the teams delivered a scintillating performance that captivated the audience and viewers alike. With Embiid tying Elgin Baylor’s record for the sixth-longest streak of 30-point games in NBA history, his MVP-caliber season continues to impress.

Looking ahead, the Nuggets face a challenging trip to Boston for their Friday game, hoping for smoother travel than their prolonged journey to Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the 76ers set their sights on a visit to Orlando, riding high from their significant win.

Union Budget allocation for sports sector ahead of Paris 2024 set to bolster India’s future Olympics bid

New Delhi, January 17, 2024: With the Paris Olympics looming on the horizon, the spotlight is extensively focused on the sports sector ahead of the Union Budget 2024. In 2023, the industry received an allocation of INR 3397.32 Cr, marking its highest-ever budget allocation in history with a jump of over INR 300 Crores.

Out of this, Khelo India got the maximum budget allocation of INR 1045 crores and has played a pivotal part in shaping the industry’s growth. Given the significance of last year’s budget, the nation’s sports industry stakeholders are united in their vision for the upcoming Union Budget as a critical player in shaping India’s future on the global stage, not just in Paris but also for India’s future Olympics bid.

Punit Balan, Chairman & Managing Director of the Punit Balan Group, expressed his optimism, stating, “Last year’s significant boost in the sports budget showcased the government’s commitment to supporting athletic talent. Considering the Paris Olympics 2024 this year, I hope to see a continued emphasis on encouraging and building future stars. The combination of grassroots initiatives like Khelo India and the professional leagues is essential for nurturing talent and ensuring a sustainable ecosystem for Indian sports.”

Looking beyond the Paris Olympics, India also aspires to host the 2036 Olympics.

Tenzing Niyogi, CEO and League Commissioner of Ultimate Kho Kho emphasized the need for strategic allocations, noting, “Aligning with the nation’s vision to host the 2036 Olympics under the leadership of our honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, we expect a strategic allocation for non-cricketing sports for infrastructure and talent development across diverse sporting disciplines. Furthermore, the allocation of funds from NSF is also of utmost importance as it will serve as a catalyst for nurturing grassroots programs and identifying as well as developing raw talent. An increase in the National Skill Development Fund is also imperative. This is not only in line with making India a multisport-playing nation but also with the creation of more opportunities through the PPP model to engage and entice additional corporate participation in the Sports Movement.”

As the sporting landscape in India evolves, Suhail Chandhok, U Mumba’s CEO, emphasized the importance of channeling resources into the development of indigenous sports leagues, the identification of talent, and the nurturing of grassroots initiatives.

“With the rapid development of emerging homegrown sports leagues, we anticipate an allocation of funds to elevate their prominence in the country. We also hope for a strategic focus on talent identification and grassroots development which to me are crucial pillars for creating a vibrant sports ecosystem. Investing in these areas will not only promote but also contribute to the sustainable development of diverse sporting disciplines,” he said.

Addressing the crucial aspect of international-level coaching, facilities, and sports sciences, Vikas K Gautam, CEO of Yuva Kabaddi Series, commented, “The allocation of funds towards the training of coaches is crucial, given the current lack of infrastructure and the absence of internationally standardized coaching facilities. It is imperative to recognize that only well-trained coaches can cultivate athletes to compete at the international level. Emphasis on holistic development programs, focusing on talent identification and nurturing, nutrition, and sports science, to create a well-rounded ecosystem for aspiring athletes.”

Aditya Reddy, Co-Founder & CEO of Gamepoint, brought attention to the fiscal aspects of the sports sector, emphasizing that reducing GST could play a pivotal role in its transformation by remarking, “In order to transform the sports sector in India, it is imperative to encourage and incentivize private sports organizations. This can be made possible by reducing the GST on sports services from 18% to 12%, incentivizing the establishment of sports goods manufacturing in India through a PLI scheme for sports equipment, and facilitating access to government, railways, and PSU sports facilities for the general public. If necessary, involving private organizations in managing these facilities under a PPP model can enhance both management and maintenance efficiency.”

Strategic allocations and funding play an instrumental role in the roadmap to transforming India into a true sporting nation. A well-supported sporting ecosystem by the government will not only contribute to success in events like the Paris Olympics but will also lay the foundation for a sustainable and thriving industry.

U19 Men’s CWC Warm-up Round-up – Rain plays spoilsport, but youngsters put up another eye-catching display

A rain-affected day three of the warm-up matches at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 in South Africa saw three out of the four matches washed out.

The first two days of the warm-up games have thrown up some standout performers – South Africa’s Kwena Maphaka and Pakistan’s Ubaid Shah produced impressive performances, spinners Nathan Sealy and Mohammad Ghazanfar also shone, while India’s Uday Saharan and USA centurion Siddharth Kappa excelled with the bat.

More youngsters stood out on the third day of warm-up action. We round it up all up here.

Ireland vs Namibia

Toss: Ireland elect to bat

Result: No result

Ireland and Namibia were affected by another rain-hit game in their build-up to the U19 Men’s CWC.

Namibia had their first game against USA washed out, while Ireland lost to Zimbabwe by the DLS method on Sunday.

Today, Ireland opted to bat first against Namibia and the openers got off to a watchful start, putting up 22 in 5.2 overs, before rain interrupted proceedings. It never relented, and play was abandoned.

Nepal v West Indies

Toss: Nepal opt to bowl

Result: No result

Another rain-marred game at the Dlamini Oval had Nepal opting to bowl after winning the toss, with the impressive Gulshan Jha striking early with the ball early on.

However, with less than 10 overs bowled and the score at 33/1, rain interrupted proceedings and no further play was possible.

USA v Zimbabwe

Toss: USA opt to bowl

Result: Zimbabwe won by 12 runs (DLS Method)

USA were impressive after opting to bowl against Zimbabwe at the Tshwane University of Technology Oval in Pretoria.

Aaryan Batra and Arya Garg took out the openers early. Panashe Taruvinga, who had played a handy knock against Ireland on Sunday, stood firm at No.3 for a while, but USA kept striking at regular intervals.

Batra and Garg were the pick of the bowlers sharing five wickets between them. Skipper Matthew Schonken, who was impressive with the ball in the match against Ireland, contributed a valuable 29 from the lower order.

Zimbabwe made 136/9. In reply, USA put on a 34-run stand for the opening wicket and a further 26 for the next, but wickets fell in quick succession thereafter.

60/1 turned into 61/5 as Anesu Kamuriwo and Ryan Simbi, a late replacement in the squad, ran through the middle-order.

At 112/9, USA were going nowhere and despite a cameo from Siddarth Kappa, Zimbabwe won by 12 runs on the DLS method.

South Africa v Afghanistan

Toss: South Africa opt to bat

Result: No result

Opting to bat first at the Braam Fisherville Sports Complex in Johannesburg, South Africa were jolted by a spirited bowling performance from Afghanistan.

Familiar foes after their tussles in the recent tri-nations series in South Africa, Afghanistan’s bowlers proved too hot for the hosts.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Steve Stolk got to double digits, but couldn’t carry on. David Teeger played the anchor role from No.3 but the others fell around him as Afghanistan reduced the Proteas U19 side to 125/7 before rain interrupted play.

Leg-break bowler Khalil Ahmad was the pick of the Afghanistan bowlers, picking up three wickets.

Rain prevented further play at the venue, but Afghanistan, fresh off a significant win over England, once again showcased the threat they pose at the U19 Men’s CWC.

New York City FC Welcomes Austrian Winger Hannes Wolf

New York City FC (NYCFC) has officially signed Austrian winger Hannes Wolf from Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach, bolstering their attack ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

The 24-year-old Wolf, who has amassed impressive experience in Europe’s top leagues, is set to join NYCFC on a deal running through the 2027 campaign, with an option for 2028. His arrival in New York is contingent upon the receipt of his ITC and P-1 Visa. The Austrian national brings a wealth of experience from playing in the Bundesliga, Champions League, and Europa League.

David Lee, NYCFC’s sporting director, expressed excitement about Wolf’s addition, highlighting his creativity, versatility, and strong defensive work rate. Wolf’s ability to play across several attacking positions is expected to be a significant asset for the team.

Wolf’s journey to NYCFC has been marked by notable achievements. He emerged as a standout player at Red Bull Salzburg, scoring 22 goals and providing 22 assists in 89 appearances, including impressive performances in the UEFA Europa League. After his time at Salzburg, Wolf moved to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and had a loan spell at Swansea City in the English Championship. His time at Mönchengladbach, however, was less impactful, partly due to injuries, including a meniscus tear that required surgery in October 2023.

At NYCFC, Wolf joins a team seeking to improve upon their 11th-place finish in the Eastern Conference last season. The club’s goal is to return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and compete for championships. Wolf is expected to contribute significantly to this ambition with his experience and talent.

Wolf’s signing is particularly timely given the uncertainty surrounding Talles Magno, a key player in NYCFC’s attack, who is reportedly seeking a transfer. Wolf’s presence adds depth and quality to the team’s attacking options, making him a potential key player for the upcoming season.

As NYCFC prepares for the new season, starting on February 24 at Charlotte FC, fans and the club alike will be eager to see how Wolf integrates into the team and contributes to their quest for silverware.
