Daccord Anchors Kraken’s Sixth Straight Win, 4-1 Over Senators

SEATTLE – Goalie Joey Daccord’s stellar performance with 32 saves led the Seattle Kraken to their sixth consecutive victory, defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-1 at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday. The Kraken (16-14-9) extended their team-record point streak to 10 games (8-0-2), showcasing their rising form in the league.

Vince Dunn contributed a goal and an assist, and Jordan Eberle assisted on two goals, playing a key role in the Kraken’s offensive success. Daccord, who recently achieved the first shutout in Winter Classic history, continued his impressive form. His shutout streak ended at 158:34 in the third period, marking the longest in Seattle’s three NHL seasons.

Reflecting on his performance, Daccord said, “It would have been nicer if I got another shutout. No, the win’s great, and I’m happy to just keep this train rolling. We’re playing great. We’re sticking to our game plan, we’re executing it well, and it’s nice to see the results go our way.”

The Senators (14-20-0), who have now lost two straight and three of their last four games, struggled to match the Kraken’s intensity. Parker Kelly scored their lone goal, and Joonas Korpisalo made 24 saves.

Ottawa’s defense faltered in the last five minutes of the second period, conceding two goals and falling behind 3-0. “I thought our minds slipped a little bit,” said Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson. “And it’s a long game, but you’ve got to stay sharp the whole time, and we paid for it.”

Yanni Gourde and Tomas Tatar also scored for the Kraken, with Tatar’s goal coming from a partial breakaway pass by Eberle. Andre Burakovsky, returning from injury, scored his first goal of the season, highlighting his significant return to the lineup.

Senators coach Jacques Martin expressed disappointment, particularly with the five minutes that cost his team the game. “We just lost our composure. We had a couple of good chances to score, their goalie makes some saves, and then we don’t stay with the course,” Martin said.

Daccord’s recent form has been outstanding, leading all NHL goalies with a .958 save percentage and 1.31 goals-against average in his last nine games. His performance has been a cornerstone of the Kraken’s success.

Both Senators captain Brady Tkachuk and Kraken forward Oliver Bjorkstrand were named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, with Tkachuk becoming the first Senators player to be named to four consecutive All-Star Games.

The Kraken’s win is a testament to their strong team play and Daccord’s exceptional goaltending, while the Senators will look to regroup and address their recent shortcomings.

The Kraken aim to maintain their winning streak and impressive form, while the Senators will seek to bounce back and return to their earlier winning ways in their upcoming games.

Defending Champions Ethiopians Hayle Lemi Berhanu and Anchialem Haymanot headline at the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2024

Mumbai, 5 Jan 2024: Defending champions and event record holders Ethiopians Hayle Lemi Berhanu and Anchialem Haymanot will headline the 19th edition of the Tata Mumbai Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race, scheduled on Sunday, the 21st of January 2024.

Earlier this year, Berhanu clocked 2:07:32 and Haymanot logged an incredible 2:24:15 on her debut, to win in Mumbai with new event records.   Later, Haymanot improved her timing to 2:22:23 in Amsterdam while finishing sixth where Berhanu posted a season-best 2:05:48 to finish at fifth.

Speaking about returning to the Tata Mumbai Marathon, Hayle Said “I won the 2023 edition of the Mumbai marathon under perfect conditions.  It was indeed a surprise and unexpected win at that time.  But I want to make sure that I replicate my victory in January as I’m confident of finishing on top in 2024”.

However, it will not be an easy task for both runners to wrest their titles again in 2024.  As many as six other men and two other women runners who had personal bests superior to the current Mumbai course records have entered the fray to challenge the reigning champions.

The US $405,000 prize money event will witness some of the finest athletes take centre-stage at the Tata Mumbai Marathon.  With equal prize money for men and women winners, the first three in each race stand to win US $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000.  The USD 15,000 bonus also awaits those who break the existing event records.

Ethiopian Kinde Atanw (30), who is credited with a PB of 2:03:51–that he achieved while winning the Valencia Marathon in 2019–will be the leading name among the men.  Incidentally, Atanaw finished third during the World 10K in Bengaluru way back in 2014 on his previous appearance in India.

Lelisa Desisa, the 2019 World Champion, together with four fellow Ethiopian runners and Eritrean Merhawi Kesete will give Hayle Lemi a run for his money this time.  Kesete finished ninth in Mumbai in 2020.

Desisa, who had his earlier appearances in India through the TCS World 10K Bengaluru, where he finished third in 2011, and Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon in three consecutive years (2010-2012, including a victory in 2010) is credited with the second-fastest time (2:04:45) among those men who entered for the 2024 race.  On his numerous international ventures, Desisa also captured two Boston marathon wins besides a title victory in New York among the big ones.

The women’s line-up includes two Ethiopians and one Kenyan runner to make it tough for Anchialem in the upcoming race in Mumbai.  Country-mates Tadelech Bekele, the 2018 London Marathon podium finisher, and Sofia Assefa–the 2012 London Olympics steeplechase silver medalist who clocked an impressive 2:23:33 on her marathon debut in Amsterdam this October will be the main challenge to the defending champion.

Speaking about returning to the Tata Mumbai Marathon, Anchialem Said “I ran my maiden marathon in Mumbai and was lucky to win the race.  I am eager to repeat the feat once again in 2024”

Commenting on this year’s field, Vivek Singh, Jt. MD. Procam International said, “The Tata Mumbai Marathon continues to attract some of the finest athletes in the world. It is also a matter of great pride to have our defending champions back and this year, with Kinde Atanaw & Tadelech Bekele we have one of the fastest fields we have ever had at the event. We are sure to have some scintillating action on the course.”

The Tata Mumbai Marathon is one of the designated marathon races to qualify for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.

This is a do-or-die outing for us and we are ready for the challenge.”

Adding to Savita’s views, Vice Captain Nikki Pradhan who belongs to Jharkhand said, “Every member of the team wants to participate in the Olympic Games. That is the ultimate dream and after arriving in Ranchi earlier this week, we have got some good training sessions in the ground. There is a lot of excitement not just among the team members but among the hockey fans in Jharkhand who I am sure will turn up in large numbers to show their support for us.”

The Indian Team will take on United States in their opening match on 13th January, followed by a match against New Zealand on 14th January. After a day’s rest, India will play Italy on 16th January while the Semi Finals will be held on 18th and the Final on 19th January. Matches will be live on Sports18 / Jio Cinema.

Horvat Leads Islanders to Commanding 5-1 Victory Over Coyotes

TEMPE, Ariz. — Bo Horvat’s outstanding performance, featuring two goals and an assist, propelled the New York Islanders to a decisive 5-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena on Thursday. The Islanders (18-10-10) responded strongly after losing two straight games, displaying a cohesive team effort in this victory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STzYstkUnwg

Anders Lee and Julien Gauthier added to the scoreline with goals 53 seconds apart in the third period, contributing to a three-goal burst that solidified the Islanders’ dominance. Ilya Sorokin was formidable in goal, making 25 saves and playing a key role in New York’s win.

Islanders coach Lane Lambert praised Horvat and Mathew Barzal for their “determined” and “solid” play, which helped create numerous scoring opportunities. “As a result, they had some opportunities and created some chances and got some numbers,” Lambert said.

The Coyotes (19-16-2), who had been enjoying a successful run with six wins out of seven games, couldn’t match the Islanders’ intensity. Nick Schmaltz scored their only goal, while Connor Ingram made 26 saves.

Arizona coach Andre Tourigny pointed out the team’s struggles with puck play and execution, noting that many of the issues were self-inflicted. “Our puck play was difficult, even the simple play was difficult. Our execution hurt us a lot,” he said.

The Islanders’ ability to maintain their lead in the third period was a crucial improvement from their previous game, a 5-4 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche. “I think we kind of learned from our mistakes and played really well in the third period, something that we haven’t done in the past,” Horvat noted.

Lee’s and Gauthier’s goals early in the third period were pivotal moments, with Gauthier’s end-to-end rush highlighting the Islanders’ aggressive play. New York outshot Arizona 14-4 in the final period, emphasizing their control over the game.

Sorokin’s performance was also noteworthy, as he has consistently performed well against the Coyotes throughout his career. “He really made some key saves tonight at the right times,” Lambert said.

Horvat’s first-period goal, 11 seconds into a power play, set the tone for the Islanders. Mike Reilly’s goal, assisted by Barzal, further extended their lead.

Barzal and Coyotes forward Clayton Keller were named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game prior to the game, with Barzal reaching a personal milestone of 400 career points.

The Islanders’ win, marked by efficient scoring and solid defense, demonstrates their ability to rebound from setbacks, while the Coyotes will look to address their execution issues in upcoming games.

UP NEXT

The Islanders aim to build on this win and continue their positive momentum, while the Coyotes seek to regroup and return to their winning ways in their upcoming fixtures.

Thomas Leads Blues to 2-1 Victory Over Canucks

ST. LOUIS — Robert Thomas continued his hot streak, scoring a goal and providing an assist to lead the St. Louis Blues to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at the Enterprise Center on Thursday. This marked Thomas’s third consecutive game with a goal, a performance that came just after he was named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euKJqDkczMM

Thomas’s critical goal at 8:03 in the third period broke the tie, giving the Blues (19-17-1) a much-needed lead. His strike from the right circle was the result of a well-orchestrated play involving multiple teammates, including a cross-ice pass from Scott Perunovich. “A lot of guys did a lot of good things for that goal,” Thomas acknowledged.

Colton Parayko also scored for St. Louis, and goalie Jordan Binnington made 25 saves, helping the team snap a two-game losing streak. “I think we played really solid game defensively,” said Pavel Buchnevich, emphasizing the team’s collective effort.

The Canucks (24-11-3), who entered the game with an impressive 8-1-2 record in their last 11 games, fell short despite a strong performance. Conor Garland provided their only goal, and Thatcher Demko was solid in net with 30 saves.

Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet expressed frustration with missed opportunities, especially in the third period. “We have four or five missed nets. We’ve got to hit the net on those shots,” he said, highlighting the need for improved execution.

Garland’s goal early in the first period initially gave the Canucks the lead, but Parayko’s equalizer in the second period set the stage for Thomas’s eventual game-winner.

The game also had several high-danger chances from Canucks players like Brock Boeser, Nils Hoglander, and Elias Pettersson, but they couldn’t capitalize on these opportunities. “Obviously disappointed,” said Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, reflecting on the close nature of the contest.

Thomas’s performance, earning his first NHL All-Star selection, was a standout aspect of the game. He has accumulated nine points over his past six games, showcasing his rising form. Hughes, despite earning his second All-Star selection, saw his five-game point streak come to an end.

Parayko’s goal was not only significant for the game but also marked a personal milestone, tying him with Barclay Plager for fourth place among Blues defensemen for games played in their history.

The win for the Blues demonstrates their ability to compete against in-form teams, while the Canucks will look to refine their finishing skills to convert chances into wins in future games.

Both teams move forward with their respective campaigns, with the Blues looking to build on their win and the Canucks aiming to bounce back from this narrow defeat.

Flames Torch Predators with Early Onslaught, Secure 6-3 Win

NASHVILLE — The Calgary Flames displayed an explosive first period, netting four goals on their way to a commanding 6-3 victory over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Thursday. The win marks Calgary’s third consecutive victory and signifies their strong form, having won six of their last nine games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzTyMqatFAU

Connor Zary and Blake Coleman each had a goal and an assist, setting a rapid pace for the Flames (17-16-5). Rasmus Andersson and Yegor Sharangovich mirrored their teammates’ performance with a goal and an assist each. Goalkeeper Dan Vladar played a crucial role, making 29 saves.

“We came out pretty hard and took control of the game,” Zary said, emphasizing the team’s solid start and the advantage of playing with an early lead.

The Predators (21-17-1), despite coming off two straight wins, struggled to match the Flames’ intensity. Juuse Saros, who had recently shut out the Chicago Blackhawks, conceded four goals in the first period and was replaced by Kevin Lankinen in the third, after making 20 saves on 25 shots. Lankinen made 13 saves in relief.

Nashville coach Andrew Brunette expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, stressing the missed opportunity to capitalize on home ice and establish their game.

The Flames’ early dominance began with Zary’s power-play goal, followed quickly by Coleman’s goal just 27 seconds later. Filip Forsberg briefly reduced the deficit for Nashville, but Nazem Kadri restored the two-goal lead for Calgary. The Flames’ first-period barrage was capped off by Andersson’s goal, showcasing their offensive prowess.

In the second period, Noah Hanifin extended Calgary’s lead, while Michael McCarron’s goal for the Predators early in the third offered a glimmer of hope. However, Sharangovich’s goal for the Flames sealed the 6-3 final score.

Flames coach Ryan Huska acknowledged the team’s struggle in the third period but was pleased with how they weathered the storm.

A concerning moment came late in the game when Flames defenseman Dennis Gilbert was injured following a hit by Predators forward Philip Tomasino. Tomasino was penalized for slew-footing, and Gilbert’s status remains to be assessed.

Among the notable performances, Predators forward Gustav Nyquist extended his point streak to seven games, and Flames forward Elias Lindholm excelled in face-offs.

Both Lindholm and Forsberg were selected to play in the upcoming 2024 NHL All-Star Game.

The Flames’ convincing win demonstrates their ability to take early control of games and maintain pressure, while the Predators will look to regroup after this setback.

UP NEXT

The Flames aim to continue their winning streak, while the Predators seek to bounce back in their upcoming games, hoping to recapture their form and climb higher in the standings.

Raddysh Leads Lightning to 4-1 Victory Over Wild with Two Goals

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Darren Raddysh emerged as an unexpected hero for the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring twice in their convincing 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Thursday. The 27-year-old defenseman, who had scored just once in his previous 60 career games, played a crucial role in Tampa Bay’s triumph.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5TABii3Ero

Raddysh’s performance was a welcome boost for the Lightning (19-16-5), who have been seeking more offensive contributions from their defensemen. “We’ve been kind of struggling to get goals on the back end, and to get two tonight, that was awesome,” Raddysh said. Tampa Bay’s coach Jon Cooper echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team’s need to generate more offense from the defense.

Victor Hedman and Brandon Hagel also found the net for the Lightning, and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 22 saves, securing the team’s second win in three games.

For the Wild (16-17-4), Zach Bogosian scored their lone goal. Goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury, one win away from tying Patrick Roy for second in NHL history, made 26 saves. The loss extends Minnesota’s losing streak to four games.

Wild coach John Hynes pinpointed the team’s execution, particularly in transitioning from defense to offense, as a key area of concern. “That’s really when you can beat that initial part of the forecheck,” Hynes said, stressing the need for improved execution to facilitate a faster and more attacking style of play.

Raddysh’s goals, including a wraparound, set the tone for the Lightning. Hedman then added a power-play goal early in the third period, extending the lead to 3-0. Despite Bogosian’s effort to spark a comeback for the Wild, Hagel’s empty-netter sealed the 4-1 final score for Tampa Bay.

Reflecting on the game, Bogosian acknowledged the challenge of facing a seasoned team like the Lightning, “They’re obviously a good veteran team that is good at controlling leads.”

In other notes, Lightning defenseman Declan Carlile made his NHL debut, and forward Nikita Kucherov, recently named to the All-Star Game, added an assist to his impressive season tally. Injured Wild forward Kirill Kaprizov was also named to the All-Star Game.

The win for Tampa Bay underscores their depth and resilience, while Minnesota will look to regroup and snap their losing streak in upcoming games.

UP NEXT

The Lightning look to build on this victory, while the Wild aim to address their issues and return to winning ways. The Wild’s next challenge comes against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

MacKinnon’s OT Heroics Lead Avalanche to Dramatic 5-4 Win Over Stars

DALLAS — Nathan MacKinnon delivered in a clutch moment, scoring his second goal of the game in overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a thrilling 5-4 victory against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Thursday. MacKinnon, who was earlier named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, sealed the win on a 2-on-0 rush, capping off a spirited comeback by the Avalanche.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdAe_pLJQ7E

Mikko Rantanen’s crucial equalizer with 1:09 left in the third period set the stage for MacKinnon’s dramatic overtime winner. “I thought we played a really solid game, a couple of breakdowns. But overall, I thought, we’re going toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the league,” MacKinnon reflected on the team’s performance.

The Avalanche (25-11-3), now on a seven-game point streak, also benefited from Jonathan Drouin’s two goals and Jack Johnson’s two assists. Goalie Alexandar Georgiev contributed with 28 saves, helping Colorado extend their winning momentum.

For the Stars (22-10-5), Tyler Seguin scored twice, and Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment each tallied two assists. Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 29 saves, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the Avalanche’s late surge. The Stars faced a significant blow when defenseman Miro Heiskanen left the game with a lower-body injury, adding to the team’s challenges.

Colorado’s comeback began in earnest with Drouin’s two goals, including a power-play goal in the final seconds of the second period and a deflection off Johnson’s point shot. Seguin’s efforts had initially given Dallas a two-goal lead, but the Avalanche’s resilience shone through.

MacKinnon’s performance was historically significant as he became the second player in franchise history to score overtime goals in consecutive regular-season games, a feat last achieved by Greg De Vries in 2003. Additionally, MacKinnon’s 64th point surpassed Rantanen’s previous record for the most points by an Avalanche player before the 40-game mark since the team’s move to Colorado in 1995-96.

Despite the win, the Avalanche faced their own injury concerns, with defenseman Bowen Byram sustaining a lower-body injury during the game.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar praised his team’s response, saying, “I liked the way our guys responded. They just kept playing their game. Little bit more intensity as the game went on for our team, which led to some scoring chances.”

The Stars, despite a strong showing, will look to regroup and address the defensive lapses that allowed Colorado’s comeback. Dallas coach Peter DeBoer acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “Their best players and their best line had all five goals.”

This victory underlines the Avalanche’s tenacity and ability to fight back in challenging situations, cementing their status as one of the league’s top teams.

UP NEXT

Both teams will aim to build on their experiences from this intense matchup in their upcoming games, with the Avalanche looking to maintain their winning form and the Stars seeking to bounce back.

Blue Jackets Rally for Shootout Victory Over Flyers

PHILADELPHIA — The Columbus Blue Jackets staged a remarkable third-period comeback to secure a 3-2 shootout win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Thursday. Damon Severson and Jake Bean’s goals in the third period were crucial in erasing a two-goal deficit, setting the stage for Johnny Gaudreau’s decisive goal in the shootout.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtyAgumEJXo

The victory, characterized by Severson as an “ugly win,” marked a significant turnaround for Columbus (13-19-8), who have been struggling recently with just two wins in their last seven games (2-2-3). Goaltender Daniil Tarasov played a pivotal role, making 39 saves in regulation and overtime, and stopping all three attempts in the shootout.

Travis Konecny was a standout for Philadelphia (19-13-6), scoring twice on the day he was named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game. Joel Farabee and Sean Couturier each notched two assists, while Samuel Ersson contributed with 26 saves. Despite these efforts, the Flyers suffered their sixth loss in their past seven games (1-3-3).

Severson’s goal early in the third period began the Blue Jackets’ resurgence, followed by Bean’s equalizer at 10:20, showcasing the team’s persistence. “You’ve just got to get one,” Severson remarked, emphasizing the momentum shift that began with their first goal.

For the Flyers, Konecny’s goals extended his point streak to six games, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win. Coach John Tortorella expressed the need to maintain leads longer and manage the game more effectively.

The Blue Jackets entered the game with a minus-31 goal differential, but their ability to claw back from deficits was on full display. “Teams have come back from not only one, two goals but a lot more than that,” Severson said, highlighting their resilience.

The Flyers had a significant opportunity to extend their lead with a two-minute 5-on-3 power play, but Tarasov’s exceptional goalkeeping kept Columbus in the game. Blue Jackets coach Pascal Vincent praised Tarasov, particularly for his performance during the 5-on-3.

Konecny’s performance was a bright spot for Philadelphia, with a career-high 26:18 ice time and seven shots on goal. The Flyers’ decision to play with 11 forwards and seven defensemen, including Rasmus Ristolainen’s milestone 700th NHL game, added to the game’s narrative.

This win for the Blue Jackets underscores their capacity to rally from behind and secure victories in challenging circumstances.

UP NEXT

Both teams look ahead to their next games, with the Blue Jackets aiming to build on this momentum and the Flyers seeking to reverse their recent form.

Trocheck and Rangers Rebound with Decisive 4-1 Win Over Blackhawks

NEW YORK — Vincent Trocheck’s exceptional playmaking skills were on full display as he recorded three assists to lead the New York Rangers to a solid 4-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks at Madison Square Garden on Thursday. This marked Trocheck’s second three-assist performance in three games, underscoring his pivotal role in the Rangers’ offense.

Trocheck’s recent form has been remarkable, with three assists four times this season and three or more points in six games. His contributions were instrumental in the Rangers’ recovery following a disappointing 6-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h55qu9KMlg

Artemi Panarin, with a goal and an assist, and Chris Kreider, who scored his 20th goal of the season, were also key to the Rangers’ success. Goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves, bouncing back strongly after conceding six goals in the previous game. His efforts earned him a selection for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, slated for February 3 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

The Rangers (26-10-1) have demonstrated resilience this season, boasting a 10-1-0 record in games following a loss. Trocheck highlighted the team’s ability to make adjustments and respond positively after defeats.

The Blackhawks (11-25-2), meanwhile, faced their fourth consecutive loss despite a goal from Colin Blackwell and 28 saves by Petr Mrazek. They continue to grapple with a spate of injuries, missing key players like Tyler Johnson, Andreas Athanasiou, Anthony Beauvillier, Taylor Raddysh, Seth Jones, and Taylor Hall.

Chicago’s coach Luke Richardson acknowledged the challenge of dealing with such extensive injuries, emphasizing the need for players to adapt to new roles and lineups.

The game saw the Rangers take control early, with Panarin’s first-period goal and Kreider’s second-period power-play goal setting the tone. While Blackwell managed to narrow the gap for Chicago, the Rangers’ solid play in the third period, marked by goals from Jacob Trouba and Jimmy Vesey, secured their convincing victory.

Skinner Shines in Sabres’ Dominant 6-1 Win Over Canadiens

MONTREAL — Jeff Skinner delivered an exceptional performance for the Buffalo Sabres, contributing a goal and three assists in their commanding 6-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.

Skinner’s efforts were pivotal in Buffalo’s offensive dominance (16-19-4), particularly on the power play, where the team went 2-for-4. Tage Thompson also had an impressive night with two goals and an assist. Other contributors included Casey Mittelstadt, Jack Quinn, and Rasmus Dahlin, each adding a goal and an assist, while Alex Tuch provided two assists.

Reflecting on the win, Skinner emphasized the collective effort, noting, “When your line plays well, the individuals are going to have success.”

In the net for Buffalo, Devon Levi made 32 saves. His performance was especially meaningful as the game marked his first NHL game in Montreal, his hometown, earning him the First Star of the game. Levi cherished the special moment, crediting his team for a solid defensive display and an outstanding power play.

For Montreal (16-17-5), which has lost four of its last five games, Joel Armia managed to score, and Jake Allen made 32 saves. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, particularly in penalty killing and overall gameplay.

The game’s key moments included Mittelstadt’s opening power-play goal at 5:33 of the second period, followed by Skinner’s snap shot to double the lead. Armia briefly narrowed the gap for Montreal with a short-handed goal, but Buffalo’s relentless offense, led by Quinn, Thompson, and Dahlin, continued to pile on the goals, eventually securing a comfortable 6-1 victory.

Dahlin’s unique empty-net goal from his own goal line and Thompson’s final score on a 2-on-1 rush with Skinner capped off a night where the Sabres displayed their scoring prowess.

Both Dahlin and Suzuki received nods for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game on the same day, highlighting their individual talents amidst the team dynamics.

Skinner, with a commendable record of 46 points in 41 games against Montreal for Buffalo and the Carolina Hurricanes, continues to be a significant threat to the Canadiens, tying with Auston Matthews for the second-most goals against them by an active player.

The Sabres’ comprehensive win showcased their offensive capabilities and resilience, setting a high bar for their upcoming games.

Crosby’s Late Heroics Propel Penguins to Thrilling 6-5 Win Over Bruins

BOSTON — In a high-scoring and intensely competitive match, Sidney Crosby’s late-game brilliance guided the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-5 victory against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Thursday. Crosby, who notched the go-ahead goal and added two assists, was pivotal in Pittsburgh’s recovery from an early deficit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrD0EMCTabc

Crosby’s performance, highlighted by his game-winning power-play goal at 11:19 in the third period, came right after his selection to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game. The goal put Pittsburgh ahead after Brad Marchand’s short-handed goal at 3:08 had leveled the score for Boston. The game saw several momentum shifts, with Pittsburgh initially leading 5-2 early in the second period, only for Boston to rally back.

“Weird start with five [goals] in the first eight minutes, but some games happen like that,” Crosby reflected on the game’s unpredictable nature.

Kris Letang’s three assists, along with notable contributions from Lars Eller and Drew O’Connor, who each had a goal and an assist, were crucial in Pittsburgh’s victory. The Penguins (19-14-4) have now won six of their last eight games. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic made 24 saves, contributing to the team’s resilience.

For the Bruins (23-8-6), despite losing their winning streak, David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie each provided a goal and two assists, with Marchand scoring twice. Goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman made 29 saves in a game where defensive tactics were overshadowed by offensive prowess.

Boston coach Jim Montgomery expressed concerns about the team’s ice management and decision-making, highlighting the need for better control, especially in high-pressure situations.

The match started at a frenetic pace, with five goals scored in the first 7:21, setting the record for the fastest five goals to start a game this season. Both teams showcased their offensive strengths, with Pittsburgh eventually sealing the deal in the closing minutes.

Evgeni Malkin, playing his 1,100th NHL game, had one shot on goal for Pittsburgh, contributing to his impressive career tally. Marchand’s short-handed goal, a record 34th for his career with the Bruins, was a highlight for Boston, despite the final outcome.

Looking forward, the Penguins will aim to carry their winning momentum, while the Bruins will seek to regroup and address their strategic gaps.

Jokic’s Buzzer-Beater Seals Dramatic Comeback for Nuggets Against Warriors

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – In a sensational finish, Nikola Jokic’s 40-foot buzzer-beater clinched a remarkable comeback for the Denver Nuggets, who overcame an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors 130-127 on Thursday night.

Jokic, delivering a standout performance, amassed 34 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. His crucial short jumper tied the game at 127 with just 26 seconds remaining. The Warriors’ final possession crumbled with a turnover by Stephen Curry, paving the way for Jokic’s dramatic game-winning shot from near the right sideline.

The defending champion Nuggets, riding high on a wave of success, have won 11 of their last 13 games, including six consecutive road victories. This win sends the Warriors, who have been struggling to reach a .500 record and recently ended a three-game losing streak, into further uncertainty with a 1-3 record on their seven-game home stand.

Denver’s Aaron Gordon contributed significantly with 30 points, and Jamal Murray added 25 to the team’s tally. Curry, despite the loss, led the Warriors with 30 points, and Klay Thompson chipped in with 24.

The Warriors initially seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Nuggets 44-24 and overturning a double-digit deficit. Highlighted by Brandin Podziemski’s trio of corner 3-pointers, they entered the final quarter leading 107-94.

The Nuggets had earlier set a strong pace, taking a 70-63 lead into halftime, buoyed by a 62% shooting performance from the field.

Golden State’s lineup was missing Draymond Green, serving an indefinite suspension for the 11th straight game. Despite reports from ESPN about Green’s potential return to the team facility, Warriors coach Steve Kerr did not confirm these before the game.

Adding to Golden State’s challenges, Gary Payton II faces another extended absence due to a strained hamstring, with a re-evaluation scheduled in three weeks.

Looking ahead, the Nuggets are set to host the Orlando Magic on Friday night, while the Warriors will face the Detroit Pistons in their continued home stand.

Giannis and Wembanyama Deliver Thrilling Showdown in Milwaukee’s Narrow Victory

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – In an eagerly anticipated matchup, the Milwaukee Bucks narrowly edged the San Antonio Spurs 125-121 in a thrilling game that showcased a face-off between Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and Spurs’ rookie Victor Wembanyama.

Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with a stunning 44 points and 14 rebounds, while Wembanyama, celebrating his 20th birthday, shone brightly with 27 points. Spurs’ Devin Vassell topped the scoring for his team with 34 points.

The encounter, marked by high energy and skillful plays, was a treat for fans and coaches alike. “That was a fun game to coach, a fun game to watch,” said Milwaukee coach Adrian Griffin, admiring the versatility of both big men.

The long-awaited duel between Antetokounmpo and Wembanyama lived up to its billing, with both 7-footers displaying their prowess in the game’s final moments. They traded clutch 3-pointers and defensive plays, with Antetokounmpo drawing a crucial charge on Wembanyama and then hitting a decisive 3-pointer to push Milwaukee ahead.

Wembanyama, not to be outdone, blocked Damian Lillard’s layup and tied the game with a 3-pointer, exhibiting his fearlessness in crunch time. “You can tell that he’s not scared of the moment,” praised Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton.

In a nail-biting finish, Wembanyama blocked an Antetokounmpo dunk attempt, setting up a potential game-tying shot. However, Spurs’ Tre Jones missed a critical 3-pointer, allowing the Bucks to clinch the victory.

Lillard also made a significant contribution with 25 points and 10 assists. Wembanyama, reflecting on his performance, acknowledged studying Antetokounmpo’s aggressive style, striving to be a formidable opponent on the court.

The rookie’s impact was palpable, with 9 rebounds, 5 blocks, and an efficient 10-of-18 shooting. His electrifying play included a self-assisted two-handed dunk and a one-handed dunk over Brook Lopez, igniting the Spurs, who are striving for better results in a challenging season.

The Bucks next face Houston on Saturday night, while the Spurs take on Cleveland on Sunday, carrying the momentum of a promising performance against a championship-level team.

Gauthier’s Late Goal Sends USA to Gold-Medal Game Against Sweden

HOCKEY NEWS – In a thrilling semifinal, the United States staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Finland 3-2, securing their spot in the gold-medal game against host nation Sweden. Cutter Gauthier emerged as the hero for the U.S. team, scoring a decisive power-play goal with just over three minutes left in regulation.

The game began with Finland displaying a simplistic but effective style, emphasizing chipping the puck and creating turnovers. This strategy paid off early, with Tommi Mannisto capitalizing on a U.S. mistake to open the scoring. Finland continued to press, leading to Rasmus Kumpulainen’s tip-in goal, giving the Finns a 2-0 lead in the first period.

The U.S. team, known for their speed and puck movement, struggled initially against Finland’s tight defense. Goalie Niklas Kokko kept the Americans at bay, including a crucial save against Gavin Brindley. However, as the game progressed, the U.S. found their rhythm, beginning to dominate the play.

In the second period, the U.S. team’s efforts intensified. Despite several missed opportunities, Jimmy Snuggerud’s power-play goal reduced the deficit, followed by a quick equalizer from Will Smith, capitalizing on a Finnish defensive lapse.

Heading into the third period, the game was evenly poised at 2-2. The U.S. continued their aggressive play, culminating in Gauthier’s stunning late goal, securing a well-deserved victory.

The U.S. team’s ability to overcome a two-goal deficit showcases their resilience and skill, setting up an exciting gold-medal clash with Sweden. The turnaround was a testament to their strategic adjustments and relentless pressure, which eventually wore down the Finnish defense.

The gold-medal game promises to be a thrilling encounter, with the U.S. looking to carry forward their momentum against a strong Swedish side on home ice.

Rosters Announced For 2024 Pro Bowl Games Presented by Verizon

Player selections were determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches, with each group’s vote counting as one-third toward determining the all-star players who will be selected to this year’s Pro Bowl Games. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. NFL players and coaches voted on Dec. 29.

For the first time in three years, the National Football League will return to Orlando to celebrate the league’s best players at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon. As in past years, the Pro Bowl Games provides fans with an unmatched opportunity to vote for their favorite players to compete in a multi-day AFC versus NFC competition, featuring Pro Bowl Skills and culminating in an action-packed flag football game, led by head coaches Peyton and Eli Manning.

The 2024 Pro Bowl Games, hosted in partnership with Florida Citrus Sports, Orange County and the City of Orlando, will be a multi-day AFC versus NFC competition culminating on Sunday, Feb. 4, at Camping World Stadium. Fans can visit ProBowl.com/tickets to buy tickets, which start as low as $45, for Sunday’s event, which will also be televised from 3-6 p.m. ET on ESPN, ABC, Disney XD, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes.

In addition to Sunday’s event, ESPN will air the Pro Bowl Skills Show live from 7-8:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 1 in the Nicholson Fieldhouse at the University of Central Florida. A made-for-TV event, the Pro Bowl Skills Show will feature the NFL’s top players participating in unique competitions that showcase their on-field and off-field skills. Announced in December, the 2024 Pro Bowl Games will feature new and fan-favorite skills, with cumulative scoring leading up to flag football on Sunday.

On Location, the official hospitality partner of the NFL, will offer guests elevated hospitality packages for a one-of-a-kind experience at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, including field access throughout the game, access to closed practice sessions, player introductions and premium seating to the game.

Twenty-eight teams had at least one player selected to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games roster and 21 clubs had multiple players chosen as all-stars. The SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS led all teams with nine Pro Bowl selections while the BALTIMORE RAVENS and DALLAS COWBOYS each had seven players chosen. Five additional teams – the CLEVELAND BROWNS (five), DETROIT LIONS (five), KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (five), MIAMI DOLPHINS (six) and PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (six) – each placed at least five players on the Pro Bowl roster.

Representing the AFC quarterbacks are former NFL Most Valuable Players LAMAR JACKSON of the Baltimore Ravens (third Pro Bowl selection) and PATRICK MAHOMES of the Kansas City Chiefs (sixth-consecutive selection) as well as first-time selection TUA TAGOVAILOA of the Miami Dolphins. In the NFC, the league’s top-two leaders in touchdown passes entering Week 18 – DAK PRESCOTT of the Dallas Cowboys (third selection) and BROCK PURDY of the San Francisco 49ers (first selection) – are joined by 15-year NFL veteran MATTHEW STAFFORD of the Los Angeles Rams (third selection).

Purdy and Tagovailoa are both designated as the starting quarterbacks on the initial roster, marking the first time that both starting quarterbacks on the initial Pro Bowl roster were first-time selections since the 2000 Pro Bowl following the 1999 season (Pro Football Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner).

San Francisco’s TRENT WILLIAMS was selected to his 11th Pro Bowl, the most among players chosen for the initial roster, becoming the eighth offensive lineman ever with at least 11 career Pro Bowl selections.

Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman AARON DONALD was selected to his 10th career Pro Bowl and is the only defensive lineman since 1970 to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons. He also joins Pro Football Hall of Famers Reggie White (13) and Bruce Smith (11) as the only defensive linemen since 1970 with 10 Pro Bowl selections.

Miami’s TYREEK HILL was selected to his eighth Pro Bowl, becoming the first wide receiver ever to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first eight career seasons.

Indianapolis guard QUENTON NELSON became the fourth offensive lineman to be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first six career seasons, joining Zack Martin (who was selected to his ninth Pro Bowl this year), Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Thomas and Richmond Webb.

Cincinnati’s JA’MARR CHASE and Dallas’ MICAH PARSONS each earned their third-consecutive Pro Bowl selections since entering the NFL in 2021 while the New York Jets’ SAUCE GARDNER was selected to his second-straight Pro Bowl since being chosen No. 4 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Baltimore’s JUSTIN TUCKER was selected to his seventh career Pro Bowl, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen for the most Pro Bowl selections by a kicker.

Kansas City’s TRAVIS KELCE was chosen to his ninth Pro Bowl, trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez (14) and Jason Witten (11) for the most Pro Bowl selections among tight ends all-time.

San Francisco’s KYLE JUSZCZYK was selected to his eighth Pro Bowl, the most ever by a fullback.

Twenty-eight of the players selected to the Pro Bowl today are first-time all-stars, including rookies SAM LAPORTA (Detroit), MARVIN MIMS (Denver), PUKA NACUA (Los Angeles Rams) and DEVON WITHERSPOON (Seattle).

NFL Announces Nominees for 2023 Don Shula High School Coach of the Year Award

NEW YORK — Jan. 4, 2024 — The NFL announced today the high school football coaches nominated by the 32 NFL teams for the 2023 Don Shula High School Coach of the Year Award, representing the best in coaching at the high school level.

These coaches were recognized by their local NFL clubs for the prestigious award – named after Pro Football Hall of Famer Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history. The coaches were judged based on areas in which Coach Shula excelled most during his career – character, integrity, leadership, dedication to the community, commitment to player health and safety and on-field success.

“It is exciting to celebrate the nominees from each NFL club; all 32 represent the integrity, commitment and character of Coach Don Shula,” said Roman Oben, vice president of football development. “High school football coaches help mold the lives of young high school players both on and off the field. They serve as leaders and role models, and this group represents the very best every year.”

The NFL will recognize one winner from the region near an NFL Club in each conference, AFC and NFC. These two winners will be invited to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 4 and will be recognized in special ways during the NFL’s week-long celebration of football. Throughout the week, coaches will receive VIP access and accommodations to attend the Pro Bowl Games practices for both conferences, on-field access on Sunday for the culmination of the Pro Bowl Games, and a chance to interact and engage with various members of the football community.

The NFL Foundation and Nike have teamed up to provide the two winners a $15,000 award for their high school football programs and a $10,000 cash award. The other 30 club nominees will all receive a $1,000 cash award. The two winners will also attend Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas as special guests of the NFL. The Don Shula Award winners will be announced in the week prior to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, televised on Sunday, Feb. 4, from 3-6 p.m. ET on ESPN, ABC, Disney XD, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes. The winners will also be recognized and walk the red carpet at NFL Honors, a two-hour primetime awards special to air nationally on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

Colorado Rapids Acquire Goalkeeper Zack Steffen from Manchester City

DENVER, CO – The Colorado Rapids have made a major addition to their squad by acquiring US men’s national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen from Premier League club Manchester City. The Rapids announced on Thursday that Steffen is contracted through the 2026 MLS season, with an option for 2027.

To facilitate this significant move, Colorado sent $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to the New England Revolution to obtain the discovery priority rights for Steffen.

Club president Pádraig Smith highlighted Steffen’s credentials: “Zack is an elite-level goalkeeper with a wealth of experience internationally and in MLS. His exceptional skills, experience, and proven track record make him a valuable addition to our roster.”

Steffen, 28, is well-recognized in the MLS, having previously shone for the Columbus Crew between 2017 and 2019. His remarkable performance during this period, especially in 2018 when he was named the Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, paved the way for his move to Manchester City for a reported fee of up to $10 million – a record for an MLS goalkeeper.

During his tenure with Manchester City, Steffen appeared in 21 games across all competitions, primarily in the FA Cup and EFL Cup. He also had loan spells at Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga during the 2019-20 season and at Championship side Middlesbrough FC in the 2022-23 season.

On the international stage, Steffen has earned 29 caps with the USMNT, last playing in a World Cup qualifier in March 2022.

Head coach Chris Armas expressed excitement about Steffen’s arrival: “He is a top player with big experiences and we know he will add so much to our group. His quality, leadership, and winning mentality will help us for years to come.”

Prior to Steffen’s signing, William Yarbrough was the Rapids’ starting goalkeeper from 2020 to 2023. The team also includes Serbian international goalkeeper Marko Ilić.

With the addition of Steffen, the Rapids, under new leadership from Armas, are poised to start their 2024 regular season with enhanced defensive strength. They will face off against the Portland Timbers on Feb. 24, marking an exciting beginning to their campaign.

San Jose Earthquakes Sign Midfielder Alfredo Morales Through 2024

SAN JOSE, CA – The San Jose Earthquakes have bolstered their midfield by signing former US international Alfredo Morales. The club confirmed on Thursday that Morales joins them through the 2024 MLS season, with an option for 2025.

To secure Morales, San Jose acquired his rights from New York City FC in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 SuperDraft. Morales, who played for NYCFC from 2021-23, became available after NYCFC declined his contract option last fall.

Chris Leitch, Earthquakes General Manager, expressed confidence in Morales’ abilities: “Alfredo brings playoff experience and knows how to win in this league. I’m looking forward to having him as a veteran presence in our talented midfielder group for the 2024 season.”

Morales, an MLS Cup 2021 champion, contributed 0 goals and 7 assists in 73 regular-season games for NYCFC. Prior to his MLS stint, he spent nearly a dozen years in Germany’s top two divisions with clubs such as Hertha BSC, FC Ingolstadt, and Fortuna Düsseldorf. Additionally, Morales has 16 caps for the USMNT and was eligible to represent both Peru and Germany internationally.

In joining the Earthquakes, Morales becomes part of a strong midfield lineup, featuring Carlos Gruezo and Jackson Yueill. He is expected to fill the vacancy left by Judson’s departure and bring added depth and experience to the team.

San Jose, under head coach Luchi Gonzalez, narrowly made it into the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs as the Western Conference’s No. 9 seed. The Earthquakes are looking to build on this momentum as they begin their 2024 campaign on Feb. 24 against FC Dallas.

Morales’ signing is a strategic move for the Earthquakes, aiming to strengthen their midfield with his experience and knowledge of winning in the MLS. Fans and the team alike will be eager to see the impact Morales can make in the upcoming season.

Orlando City SC Signs Nicolás Lodeiro Through 2024

ORLANDO, FL – Orlando City SC has made a significant move in the MLS free agency market by signing experienced attacking midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro. The club announced on Thursday that the Uruguayan playmaker, a Seattle Sounders FC legend, joins them through 2024 with an option for 2025.

Lodeiro, 34, concluded an impressive eight-season tenure with Seattle, where he tallied 41 goals and 80 assists over 191 matches. His time at Seattle was marked by considerable success, including two MLS Cup victories (2016 and 2019) and a historic Concacaf Champions League title in 2022.

With 60 caps for the Uruguayan national team, including appearances in two World Cups and four Copa Américas, Lodeiro brings a wealth of international experience. He has also featured for renowned clubs such as Boca Juniors in Argentina and Ajax in the Netherlands.

Luiz Muzzi, Orlando’s EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager, expressed excitement about Lodeiro’s addition: “We are thrilled to have Nico join us here in Orlando. He is a proven winner in this league… He knows what it takes.”

Lodeiro arrives in Orlando as a likely replacement for fellow Uruguayan Mauricio Pereyra, with his contract not occupying a Designated Player spot. This strategic move provides Orlando with additional flexibility in the Primary Transfer Window, potentially to sign a third DP alongside Facundo Torres and Martín Ojeda.

“We know he’ll provide valuable experience and leadership to our locker room as we look to build upon our club’s successes this season,” Muzzi added.

Orlando City SC, coming off a year where they were the Supporters’ Shield runners-up, is set to kick off their 2024 campaign on Feb. 21 against Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round One series. Their MLS season begins on Feb. 24 at home against CF Montréal.

Lodeiro’s signing is seen as a major boost for Orlando, offering experience, leadership, and proven skill in the midfield as they aim for success in the upcoming season.

Portland Timbers Acquire Kamal Miller from Inter Miami in Major Trade

PORTLAND, OR – The Portland Timbers have made a significant addition to their defensive lineup by acquiring Canadian international center back Kamal Miller from Inter Miami CF, as announced on Thursday.

In a strategic exchange, the Timbers have sent $625,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) across the next two seasons to Inter Miami, along with a 2024 international roster spot. Additionally, Inter Miami stands to gain an extra $150,000 in performance-based GAM and will retain a sell-on percentage for Miller in transactions outside of MLS.

Portland Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy expressed enthusiasm about Miller’s arrival: “Strengthening our defensive group this offseason was a priority. Kamal provides us with a great player, competitor, and flexibility along our backline. We look forward to him joining our group as our preseason work gets underway.”

Miller, 26, has had a notable journey in the MLS, starting with the 2019 SuperDraft. He has accumulated 3 goals and 6 assists in 110 regular-season appearances playing for Orlando City SC, CF Montréal, and Inter Miami. A veteran of the 2022 World Cup, Miller has also been capped 41 times for the Canadian Men’s National Team (CanMNT).

This trade reunites Miller with former Inter Miami manager and now Portland head coach Phil Neville. Miller’s addition gives the Timbers a robust central defense, joining the likes of Canadian international Zac McGraw, Peru international Miguel Araujo, and veterans Larrys Mabiala and Dario Zuparic.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami, with the departure of Miller, will rely on Argentine youth international Tomás Avilés and Ukrainian international Sergii Kryvtsov as their primary center-backs. The acquisition of GAM provides them with increased flexibility for future signings, aimed at bolstering their squad.

Chris Henderson, Inter Miami’s CSO and sporting director, acknowledged Miller’s contributions, stating, “This trade allows us to continue positioning ourselves positively as we aim to further strengthen our squad with our sights set on more titles next season.”

Both Portland and Inter Miami, having struggled defensively last season and missing the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, are looking to revamp their squads as the 2024 regular season approaches. Inter Miami kicks off the MLS is Back festivities on Feb. 21 against Real Salt Lake, while Portland opens its season on Feb. 24 against the Colorado Rapids.

Houston Astros Claim Pitcher Declan Cronin, Designate Joel Kuhnel

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have announced the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Declan Cronin off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, as confirmed by Astros General Manager Dana Brown. In a corresponding move, the team has designated right-handed pitcher Joel Kuhnel for assignment to make space for Cronin on the 40-man roster.

Cronin, 26, brings fresh talent to the Astros’ bullpen, having made his Major League debut with the White Sox last season. In his nine-game stint in the majors, he showcased his potential. At the Triple-A level with Charlotte, Cronin delivered a solid performance, recording a 3-0 record with two saves and a respectable 3.83 ERA in 47 relief appearances, spanning 51.2 innings pitched. Over his four-season minor league career, Cronin has achieved a 12-6 record with a 3.81 ERA and four saves in 151 appearances, including one start.

On the other hand, Joel Kuhnel, aged 28, part ways with the Astros after a brief tenure. Last season, Kuhnel posted a 4.66 ERA over 9.2 innings in seven relief appearances with Houston. Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in June, he also featured in 17 games for Triple-A Sugar Land, where he had a 5.03 ERA over 19.2 innings, marking a challenging phase in his career.

The Astros’ roster remains at full capacity with this latest transaction. Cronin’s addition to the team indicates the Astros’ ongoing efforts to strengthen their pitching depth. His previous performances suggest he could be a valuable asset in Houston’s quest for bullpen stability and effectiveness.

Astros fans and team management alike will be keen to see how Cronin adapts to his new environment and whether he can translate his minor league success to Major League performance.

Minnesota Twins Claim Pitcher Ryan Jensen from Marlins

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins have bolstered their pitching lineup by claiming right-handed pitcher Ryan Jensen off waivers from the Miami Marlins, the team announced today.

Jensen, 26, brings a mixed record from the 2023 season, where he played for three minor league teams. His combined performance included a 2-8 record with a 5.32 ERA over 64.1 innings pitched, amounting to 38 earned runs. Notably, Jensen recorded 54 walks and 78 strikeouts, achieving an impressive rate of 10.9 strikeouts-per-9.0 innings. His 2023 journey spanned Double-A Tennessee (Chicago-NL), Triple-A Iowa (Chicago-NL), and Triple-A Tacoma (Seattle).

Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 190 pounds, Jensen has accumulated experience over four seasons within the Cubs and Mariners organizations. His career stats include a 7-19 record with a 4.42 ERA across 215.2 innings pitched, totaling 106 earned runs. He also tallied 138 walks and 247 strikeouts, maintaining a solid average of 10.3 strikeouts-per-9.0 innings in his 86 games (49 starts).

Originally from Monterey, California, Jensen was a first-round pick (27th overall) by the Chicago Cubs in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, coming out of California State University, Fresno.

With this acquisition, the Twins’ 40-man roster now stands at 38 players. The roster includes 19 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders, and eight outfielders. Jensen’s addition is expected to provide depth and flexibility to the Twins’ pitching staff, particularly in the bullpen.

The Twins organization and their fans will be looking forward to seeing how Jensen’s skills translate at the major league level and how he can contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
