Yankees Acquire Outfielder Bubba Thompson from Reds

NEW YORK, NY – The New York Yankees announced today that they have claimed outfielder Bubba Thompson off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds, adding a versatile player to their roster.

Thompson, 25, has shown promise in his brief Major League career with the Texas Rangers. In the 2023 season, he recorded a batting average of .170 (9-for-53), including 10 runs, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4 RBIs, and 4 stolen bases over 37 games. His performance demonstrated his potential as a dynamic player on the field.

In addition to his Major League appearances, Thompson’s 2023 season also saw him play for Triple-A Round Rock in the Texas Rangers’ system and for the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A team in Omaha. During these stints, he combined to hit .259 (69-for-266) with 49 runs, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 34 RBIs, 27 walks, and an impressive 27 stolen bases across 65 games.

Over his two seasons in the majors with Texas (2022-23), Thompson has compiled a batting average of .242 (54-for-223) with 28 runs, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 13 RBIs, 11 walks, and 22 stolen bases in 92 career games. Defensively, he has shown his flexibility by playing at all three outfield positions – left field, right field, and centerfield.

Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Thompson was a first-round pick (26th overall) by the Texas Rangers in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. His journey through the MLB has included waiver claims by Kansas City from Texas on August 13, 2023, and by Cincinnati from Kansas City on October 26, 2023, before landing with the Yankees.

The Yankees’ acquisition of Bubba Thompson signals their intent to bolster their outfield options with a young, athletic player capable of contributing both offensively and defensively. The team and its fans will be eagerly anticipating Thompson’s impact in the upcoming season.

Brooklyn Nets Fined $100,000 for Player Participation Policy Violation

NEW YORK, NY – In a significant ruling today, the NBA imposed a $100,000 fine on the Brooklyn Nets for breaching the league’s Player Participation Policy during their game against the Milwaukee Bucks on December 27 at the Barclays Center.

The fine comes after a thorough investigation, including an assessment by an independent physician. The NBA’s probe revealed that four key rotation players for the Nets, who were sidelined for the matchup, were medically cleared to play, contradicting the team’s decision to hold them out. This finding puts the Nets in direct violation of the Player Participation Policy, a set of guidelines established before the current season designed to ensure players’ active involvement in the league’s comprehensive 82-game schedule.

The Player Participation Policy, a relatively new addition to the NBA’s regulatory framework, mandates that players who are medically capable must participate in games. This policy is a critical component of the league’s efforts to maintain competitive integrity and to provide fans with the opportunity to see their favorite players in action.

The Brooklyn Nets’ failure to adhere to this policy, as determined by the league’s investigation, has led to this punitive measure. The NBA’s decision underscores the importance of transparency and adherence to league rules concerning player health and game participation.

Ricky Rubio Announces Retirement from NBA, Citing Personal Challenges

In a heartfelt statement released today, Ricky Rubio, the esteemed point guard who has graced the NBA with his presence for over a decade, announced his retirement from professional basketball. Rubio’s career, which began with high expectations on draft night in June 2009, has seen a series of ebbs and flows that have now culminated in a personal decision to step away from the limelight of the hardwood.

Rubio’s journey through the league took him to various franchises, including stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Throughout his career, he has been praised for his visionary passing and quick hands on defense, leaving a legacy of highlight reels that feature no-look passes and crafty steals.

The announcement comes after a challenging period for Rubio, who expressed a desire to share his full experience when the time is right, hinting at struggles that have impacted his mental health. While details remain private out of respect for his family and personal well-being, Rubio’s openness about his mental health battles serves as a reminder of the pressures faced by professional athletes.

Rubio’s final season with the Cavaliers was especially poignant, with the player extending a special mention to the team and its leadership, including Koby Altman and J.B. Bickerstaff, for their support and understanding. His message conveyed deep gratitude for the relationships forged and the support received throughout his illustrious career.

As the basketball community digests this news, fans and fellow players alike are sending waves of support to Rubio, honoring his contributions to the sport and his courage in facing personal adversities. Rubio’s commitment to improving his mental health and his intention to help others facing similar challenges is a testament to his character both on and off the court.

The NBA bids farewell to a player who not only dazzled with his skill but also inspired with his humanity. Ricky Rubio’s legacy will undoubtedly be remembered for his magical assists, but perhaps more importantly, for the strength he demonstrated in his most vulnerable moments.

Erik ten Hag Discusses INEOS Investment and Squad Updates Ahead of FA Cup Tie

In a recent press conference, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag discussed various topics ranging from the team’s upcoming FA Cup third-round tie against Wigan Athletic to the recent investment in the club by INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ten Hag described his meeting with Ratcliffe as “very positive,” noting that they spent many hours discussing various issues and found common ground on numerous points. He expressed optimism about the future collaboration following the INEOS investment, subject to regulatory approvals.

Regarding player availability, ten Hag is in talks with the Cameroon Federation about Andre Onana’s participation in the upcoming matches, given the proximity to Cameroon’s first game at the Africa Cup of Nations. He confirmed that Onana would be available for the game against Wigan but was uncertain about the Tottenham match.

The manager also provided updates on contract extensions. Manchester United has triggered the extensions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Hannibal, while discussions are ongoing with Rapha Varane and Anthony Martial. He declined to elaborate further, citing these as internal discussions.

When asked about Jadon Sancho’s potential loan move to Borussia Dortmund, ten Hag stated that there was no news to share at the moment and preferred to wait until there were concrete developments.

In terms of changes following the INEOS investment, ten Hag believes it’s too early to speculate, as the new investors are still settling in. He mentioned that they have shared ideas and strategies, and there will be further collaboration to integrate these into the club’s operations.

Finally, on the injury front, ten Hag doesn’t expect any new additions to the squad for the game against Wigan, indicating that the team would be similar to the one that played against Nottingham Forest.

Sweden Triumphs Over Czechia 5-2, Advances to Finals in World Juniors

Sweden clinched a spot in the gold-medal game of the World Junior Championship with a commanding 5-2 victory over Czechia. This marks Sweden’s first appearance in the final since 2018, and it comes as a measure of redemption after their semi-final loss to Czechia last year.

Jonathan Lekkerimaki emerged as a key player for Sweden, scoring twice, including the decisive third-period goal that broke the 2-2 tie. His performance in the tournament has been exceptional, tying him for the lead in goals and placing him near the top in points.

Swedish assistant captain Oskar Pettersson reflected on the team’s turnaround after a sluggish start, attributing their victory to increased determination and a strategic push in the third period. Czechia’s Matyas Sapovaliv acknowledged Sweden’s superiority, but remained optimistic about Czechia’s chances to win back-to-back medals for the first time in over two decades.

The game began with Czechia taking an early lead, thanks to Matyas Melovsky’s goal. Sweden, however, responded quickly with goals from David Edstrom and Axel Sandin Pellikka, showcasing their resilience and offensive capabilities.

The second period was evenly matched, with both teams exchanging goals. Czechia managed to tie the game on a power-play goal by Tomas Cibulka, but Sweden’s consistent pressure eventually paid off. Lekkerimaki’s pivotal power-play goal early in the third period gave Sweden the lead, followed by goals from Noah Ostlund and Lekkerimaki again, sealing the victory.

The win for Sweden not only sets them up for a chance at gold but also demonstrates their growth and ability to perform under pressure. Czechia, despite the loss, still has an opportunity to make history with a potential medal in the upcoming bronze-medal game.

Tonight’s result showcases the high level of competition and skill in the World Junior Championship, with teams like Sweden and Czechia exemplifying the spirit and talent of junior hockey on the international stage.

World Records for Albertson, Ingebrigtsen and Sorokin Ratified

Men’s world 50km record
2:38:43 CJ Albertson (USA) San Francisco 8 October 2022

Men’s world 100km record
6:05:35 Aleksandr Sorokin (LTU) Vilnius 14 May 2023

Men’s world 2000m record
4:43.13 Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR) Brussels 8 September 2023

World records set by CJ Albertson, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Aleksandr Sorokin have been ratified.

Albertson’s was the first of the three marks to be set, as he clocked 2:38:43 to break the world 50km record at the Ruth Anderson Memorial Endurance Run in San Francisco on 8 October 2022.

Despite his training being marathon focused, USA’s Albertson decided to test himself over the longer distance and took 90 seconds off the previous 50km record of 2:40:13 achieved by South Africa’s Stephen Mokoka in Gqeberha on 6 March 2022.

Albertson ran at an average pace of 5:05 per mile on the 4.5-mile loop course around Lake Merced to achieve his feat.

Another ultra-running record was set seven months later, when Lithuania’s Sorokin clocked 6:05:35 for 100km at the Nord Security World’s Fastest Run in Vilnius on 14 May 2023.

That performance was an improvement of three minutes and 39 seconds on the previous official world 100km record of 6:09:14, set by Japan’s Nao Kazami on 24 June 2018.

Competing on a 1.644km circuit in the Lithuanian capital, Sorokin covered the marathon distance in about 2:32:30 and maintained that rhythm as he reached half way in just under 3:02, putting him well on course to break Kazami’s record.

On the track, Norway’s Ingebrigtsen set his first outdoor world record, running 4:43.13 for 2000m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Brussels on 8 September 2023.

Following the two miles world best of 7:54.10 he set in Paris and world indoor 1500m record of 3:30.60 he achieved in Lievin, Ingebrigtsen this time improved the world 2000m record of 4:44.79 that had been set by Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj in Berlin on 7 September 1999.

The pace target for the halfway mark was 2:21, but the time had drifted out at that point to 2:22.28. After the last pacemaker moved aside with just over 600 metres remaining, Ingebrigtsen was off on his solo mission and he managed to beat the clock.

Ingebrigtsen will target more success in the Diamond League in 2024 as he works towards the defence of his 1500m title in the No.1 Olympic sport at the Games in Paris in August.

India Tops WTC25 Standings After Historic Win in Cape Town

India’s cricket team has soared to the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC25) standings, following a remarkable seven-wicket victory against South Africa in Cape Town. This win, not only crucial in terms of points but also historic in its nature, has propelled India to the forefront in the ongoing WTC cycle.

The series between India and South Africa, which ended in a 1-1 draw, saw a dramatic shift in the WTC25 standings. South Africa, initially leading after their opening match win, saw their win percentage dip to 50% post the loss in Cape Town, aligning them with New Zealand, Australia, and Bangladesh.

India’s resurgence in the series was nothing short of spectacular. Trailing 1-0, they staged a stunning comeback on the first day of the second Test, dismissing South Africa for a meager 55 runs. However, India’s own batting lineup suffered a collapse, ending at 153 all out from a promising 153/4.

Despite the batting falter, India’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul, shone in the second innings, restricting South Africa to 176. Aiden Markram’s exceptional century stood out for the hosts, preventing a complete debacle.

The current ICC World Test Championship standings, powered by MRF Tyres, are as follows:

India’s final chase of 79 runs in the Cape Town Test was brisk, completing it in just 12 overs, albeit losing three wickets. This Test also set a record for being the shortest completed Test in terms of balls bowled, a mere 642, surpassing a 92-year-old record.

With the WTC25 cycle still in its early stages, India looks forward to accumulating more points in their upcoming home Test series against England, comprising five matches beginning January 25. This series represents a significant opportunity for India to solidify its position at the top of the WTC25 standings.

Yan Couto Clinches LaLiga EA SPORTS Under-23 Player of the Month Award for December

Girona FC’s Brazilian defender Yan Couto has been named the LaLiga EA SPORTS Under-23 Player of the Month for December. This prestigious accolade, a partnership between LaLiga and Sorare, recognizes the outstanding performances of young talents in the league. At just 21 years old, Couto has emerged as a key player in Michel’s Girona squad, contributing significantly to the team’s successful run in the month.

Couto’s impact on the field was particularly notable in December. In the match against Valencia CF, he played a pivotal role by assisting Cristhian Stuani’s equalizing goal, which brought the score to 1-1. His contributions were even more remarkable in Girona’s crucial victory over Deportivo Alaves. That win propelled Girona to the top of the table, and Couto’s performance was a highlight. He not only provided the assist for Portu’s goal to extend their lead to 2-0 but also won a penalty, subsequently converted by Artem Dovbyk, sealing a commanding 3-0 victory.

Wearing the number 20 jersey, Couto’s achievements in December earned him the LaLiga EA SPORTS Under-23 Player of the Month award, triumphing in the final voting round over other notable contenders. These included Jude Bellingham from Real Madrid, Nico Williams of Athletic Club, Julian Araujo from UD Las Palmas, and Take Kubo of Real Sociedad.

This award marks a significant milestone in Couto’s burgeoning career, highlighting his skills and potential as one of LaLiga’s most promising young talents. His contributions have not only been pivotal for Girona FC but also serve as an inspiration for other young players in the league. As Couto continues to develop and refine his abilities, he is undoubtedly a player to watch in the future of LaLiga and international football.

Braves Secure Chris Sale with a Lucrative Two-Year Deal

The Atlanta Braves have made a significant addition to their pitching roster by signing left-handed pitcher Chris Sale to a two-year contract valued at $38 million, with an additional $18 million club option for 2026. This deal follows Sale’s recent acquisition from his previous team, along with cash considerations, in exchange for infielder Vaughn Grissom.

At 34 years old, Sale’s career has been marked by impressive achievements and challenges. He was a consistent contender for the American League Cy Young Award from 2012 to 2018, finishing within the top six for seven consecutive seasons. However, his career trajectory faced setbacks due to injuries. Sale underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020 and dealt with a rib fracture and a right wrist fracture during the 2022 season, limiting him to only 11 starts over the past three years.

Despite these challenges, the Braves see potential in Sale’s recovery and performance. Last season, he faced a stress reaction to his left scapula, culminating in a 4.30 ERA over 20 starts. However, his post-injury list return in August showed promise, where he recorded a 3.92 ERA in nine starts.

The trade for Sale, at the expense of Grissom, indicates the Braves’ confidence in Sale’s ability to rebound and contribute significantly to the team’s success. Alex Anthopoulos, the Braves’ president of baseball operations, expressed optimism about Sale’s upcoming season. “This is the first normal offseason [Sale] will have had in a long time,” Anthopoulos noted. He acknowledged Sale’s limited innings last year but affirmed the team’s flexible approach in managing his workload.

The Braves’ decision to invest in Sale reflects their strategic approach to enhancing their pitching lineup and their belief in his potential to regain his top form. As Sale prepares for the upcoming season with the Braves, both the team and its fans will eagerly anticipate his contribution to their pursuit of success in Major League Baseball.

New England Revolution Bolsters Defense with Jonathan Mensah Signing

The New England Revolution have significantly strengthened their defensive lineup by signing veteran center back Jonathan Mensah through the 2024 MLS season, with an option for 2025. The club announced this key addition on Thursday, marking a strategic move in their roster development.

Mensah, a 33-year-old Ghana international, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in Major League Soccer (MLS) and international football. His reunion with new Revs head coach Caleb Porter, under whom he played at Columbus Crew, is particularly noteworthy. During his tenure with Porter, Mensah achieved remarkable success, including being named in the 2020 MLS Best XI and winning the MLS Cup in 2020 and the Campeones Cup in 2021.

Curt Onalfo, the Revolution’s Sporting Director, expressed his enthusiasm about Mensah’s addition to the team. “Jonathan Mensah is an experienced defender with a long history of success in our league and at the international level,” Onalfo stated. He highlighted Mensah’s deep understanding of what it takes to win an MLS Cup, a crucial attribute for the team’s ambitions.

Mensah’s arrival in New England follows seven seasons in the MLS, where he amassed a record of 7 goals and 3 assists in 185 regular-season matches, most recently playing for the San Jose Earthquakes. His international experience is equally impressive, featuring one goal in 70 appearances for Ghana and participation in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

At the Revolution, Mensah joins a strong central defense unit including Dave Romney, Henry Kessler, and Andrew Farrell. His signing follows the offseason acquisition of fullback Nick Lima from Austin FC, further bolstering the Revs’ backline.

Coach Porter praised Mensah’s character and leadership qualities. “He is someone my staff and I could depend on each and every week, bringing professionalism and passion to the pitch,” Porter said. He emphasized Mensah’s championship-winning experience and his positive impact on the locker room.

Mensah’s addition is timely as the Revolution prepares for their upcoming Concacaf Champions Cup match against CAI de La Chorrera in Panama on February 21. This will be followed by their regular-season opener against D.C. United on February 24.

The Revolution’s strategic signings, particularly Mensah’s, signal a robust effort to enhance their defensive capabilities and overall team strength as they embark on the Porter era and the upcoming MLS season.

Nadal’s Commanding Return Continues at Brisbane International

Rafael Nadal’s remarkable comeback on the ATP Tour progressed with another convincing win at the Brisbane International presented by Evie. The Spaniard, making a return to competitive tennis after nearly a year due to injury, showcased his signature prowess by defeating Australia’s Jason Kubler 6-1, 6-2, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Nadal’s performance against Kubler, ranked 102nd in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, was a masterclass in precision and power. Starting strong, he won 12 of the first 13 points in this first-ever Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Kubler. His exceptional form was evident in a stunning backhand smash, highlighting his agility and impeccable timing.

In his post-match interview, Nadal reflected on his strategy. “I watched videos of Jason and knew he was solid from the baseline. So, I focused on being aggressive with my shots,” he shared. This strategy evidently paid off, as Nadal dominated the match in just 83 minutes.

The victory holds special significance for Nadal, hinting that 2024 might be his final professional season. “Two victories after a long absence mean a lot. Every day I can play is great news,” he said. His next challenge is against another local favorite, World No. 55 Jordan Thompson, against whom Nadal boasts a strong record against Australian players.

The match wasn’t without challenges for Kubler, who seemed troubled by a right arm issue, requiring physiotherapy during and after the first set. Despite facing a 0/40 deficit while serving at 5-1, Nadal rallied to clinch the first set, dropping just five points on his serve. He continued his dominance with a heavy lefty forehand, breaking Kubler early in the second set and cruising to victory with 20 winners, including four aces.

In other tournament news, Grigor Dimitrov also secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a swift 6-1, 6-2 win over Daniel Altmaier. Dimitrov, the second seed, has now achieved the most wins in the history of the Brisbane event. He will face Australian wild card Rinky Hijikata in his seventh quarter-final appearance in Brisbane.

As the Brisbane International progresses, Nadal’s form and fitness will be closely watched, with fans and experts keenly anticipating how far the 92-time tour-level titlist can go in this tournament and beyond.

Bumrah’s Brilliance Leads India to Historic Win in Cape Town Test

In an exhilarating display of cricket, Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling led India to a monumental seven-wicket victory against South Africa on the second day of the second Test in Cape Town. This win not only leveled the two-match series at 1-1 but also marked India’s first Test triumph at Newlands after six unsuccessful attempts.

The day began with South Africa resuming their innings at 62 for 3. However, they faced an immediate setback as David Bedingham, attempting an ambitious drive against Bumrah, edged the ball to the wicketkeeper. The South African batting lineup continued to crumble under pressure, with Kyle Verreynne and Keshav Maharaj falling prey to Bumrah’s bowling prowess, bringing the score to a worrying 111 for 7.

Amidst this collapse, Aiden Markram emerged as a beacon of resilience for South Africa. Exhibiting remarkable skill on a challenging pitch, Markram played a series of stunning shots, scoring 47 of his 106 runs in the arc between backward point and extra cover. His spectacular innings included two sixes and two fours off Prasidh Krishna in a single over. Markram’s century, a rare feat where no other teammate crossed 20 in either innings, was the highlight of South Africa’s batting. However, his effort ended in vain as Mohammed Siraj, who previously recorded an impressive 6 for 15 in the first innings, eventually dismissed him.

Following Markram’s dismissal, South Africa’s innings quickly concluded at 176, setting a modest target of 79 runs for India.

India’s chase was brisk and aggressive, with openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal putting up a quick 44 runs. Despite losing Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in quick succession, India comfortably reached the target, thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s winning boundary.

This match, lasting just 107 overs, became the shortest Test to yield a result, emphasizing the dominance of the bowlers, particularly Bumrah and Siraj. Siraj’s remarkable performance in the first innings earned him the Player of the Match award.

The Test also marked the end of Dean Elgar’s captaincy tenure, leaving him and his team to reflect on their performance. For India, this victory in Cape Town is not just a win but a statement of their growing prowess in international cricket.

Moritz Elias’ Overtime Goal Secures German Victory and Relegates Norway in World Juniors

In a dramatic encounter at the Scandinavium, Germany clinched a crucial 5-4 victory over Norway in overtime, ensuring their participation in next year’s IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa. Moritz Elias emerged as the hero, scoring just 58 seconds into the extra period, while Norway, recently promoted to the top level, faces relegation.

The high-stakes game reflected the immense importance of the one-game showdown for both national programs, echoing their last World Junior encounter in 2014. Norway displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming deficits of 1-0, 2-1, and 4-2 to tie the game each time.

German forward Frank Hordler acknowledged the mental challenge of maintaining their lead against a tenacious Norwegian team. He highlighted the importance of simple and confident play, underscoring the victory’s significance for Germany’s national hockey program.

Norwegian player Martin Johnsen expressed disappointment but remained hopeful about Norway’s future in the tournament, citing the potential of younger players to bring the team back to the top level.

Contributions from German players Veit Oswald and captain Phillip Sinn, who each had a goal and two assists, were crucial in the win. The game began at a slow pace, with Germany opening the scoring through a well-executed two-on-one play. Norway, however, demonstrated solid defense and managed to equalize with a skillful play by Noah Steen.

The second period saw Norway emerge as the more assertive team, but Germany regained the lead through Oswald’s effort. Norway’s persistence paid off, with Mats Bakke Olsen scoring to tie the game once again.

The third period featured a flurry of goals from both teams, with Germany briefly pulling ahead before Norway fought back to level the score, setting the stage for Elias’s dramatic overtime winner.

This victory for Germany not only secures their place in the next World Junior Championship but also highlights the competitive spirit and resilience in junior hockey. Norway’s relegation, despite their spirited performance, marks a challenging end to their campaign but opens the door for future opportunities to return to the top division.

To me every game whether home or away is equally important but we hope to make use of the home advantage with our fans cheering us on during the Mumbai leg. If you analyse the seven matches we have played, the one we could not win went down to the wire and the last few games has seen tremendous improvement in terms of strategy under pressure,” coach Mazandarani said.

Adani-owned Gujarat Giants’ Kho Kho star Subramani keen to prove himself at UKK

Cuttack, 4th January 2023: Not many Kho Kho players have their brother as their mentor but the same cannot be said for young V Subramani, who has his elder sibling Saravanan to thank for his entry into the sport. Now representing the Adani Sportsline-owned Gujarat Giants in the second season of the Ultimate Kho Kho League, the 20-year-old has come a long way in Kho Kho because of the support that he actively received from his family.

“In class 12, there is the TNKKPL (Tamil Nadu Kho Kho Premier League) is the first time that I got onto the mat for the first time. It was the first time I got to develop as a player. From there, I developed into the player I am now. I did my Under Graduation at PSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore. My then Kho Kho coach was very impressed with me and got me a free seat in college so that I could study and play the sport at the same time,” recalled the young attacker.

With his brother as his mentor, a young and aspiring sportsperson Subramani got all the help he needed, especially with his brother as the captain of the school team. Under his tutelage, and the push from his grandmother, Subramani is blossoming into one of India’s brightest future stars of Kho Kho.

“He (Saravanan) played with me in the same Kho Kho team. Infact, he was my captain in the school team. Right now, he is an IT professional. But he is my mentor because he is the main reason I am able to stand high in this sport. Other than him, my grandmother was also a very supportive factor in my life. She used to say ‘You play, I will take care of you. You play well, you keep going on as you are,’ she used to motivate me,”

With the support at home, the next important thing that Subramani needed was the infrastructure, and that came in the form of the TNGR Sports Club in Coimbatore, where he honed his skills. He credits his childhood coach and the head of the TNGR Sports Club for their continued encouragement in promoting Kho Kho, and now, with the help of the Tamil Nadu Kho Kho Association, who Subramani praised as well, the young star wants to see better and brighter players of the sport from his home state.

“Nelson sir is the secretary of the Tamil Nadu Kho Kho Association Secretary and the Joint Secretary of the Kho Kho Federation of India. He has been very helpful with my development. But it was at the TNGR Sports Club in Coimbatore, led by Padhmanaban Anna, and Ashok sir, who coached me when I was 6 years old, that I got the confidence to pursue the sport and become the player I am now. Now there should be more players like me in the sport from Tamil Nadu, that is my wish.”

Recently, life turned a corner for Subramani as he joined hands with the Adani Sportsline owned Gujarat Giants. “We have assembled a strong squad in season 2, and it is showing with our results. The team management has given us a free hand to work the way we need to, and that clarity is very essential in a big tournament like that.”

“It is a very exciting time at the Adani Sportsline-owned Gujarat Giants. The team is doing well in the second season of the Ultimate Kho Kho League and we are hungry for more. I am grateful to be sharing the dressing room with such experienced and talented players. The goal is set — to win the trophy, and we have the support of the management and we will always do everything to be the best version of ourselves,” he concluded.

Sandesh Jhingan: “ISL is the spark igniting our belief to play in the FIFA World Cup”

Sandesh Jhingan was perhaps the first, biggest product that had emerged out of the ISL ecosystem. Over the 10 years, he has seen impeccable success at the international level, winning the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship in 2023, emerging victorious in the Intercontinental Cup twice (2018, 2023), and also the Tri-Nation series on two occasions (2017, 2023).

Raised in Chandigarh, he debuted for the senior national team in 2015, on the back of his impressive outings in the league. From being at the forefront of the famous ‘Viking Clap’ of the Blue Tigers, to being the bona fide leader at the back, everyone looks up to him in a moment of difficulty. The Arjuna Award winner is confident that India will be a regular in the FIFA World Cups going forward, and he insists that the first chapter of that book will be dedicated to the ISL, for how instrumental the top-tier has been in revolutionising the sport in the country.

“ISL is so important. Every citizen of this country will be involved, and will be remembered, in 15-20 years, when India will be where we want us to be. Nobody believed in us when we were ranked 173, people used to ask whether India has a football team? We were supporting them at that point in time, and now people take notice of us,” said Jhingan, talking in the recent episode of ‘In The Stands’.

“I can’t sum up the role that the ISL has played in the recent performances of the national team. It’s massive. The impact of the ISL has been massive. You can’t sum it up in scale, in words, it’s just been so important for the growth of our country. When we will be regular at the FIFA World Cups, trust me, people should and will say that the ISL was one of the sparks that ignited that fire. People will remember this league,” he said.

For Jhingan, the ISL has helped create local inspirations, which have encouraged youngsters to take up football professionally. He believes that an entire generation of Indians grew up idolising European sportspeople, because the country lacked homegrown heroes. That issue has been addressed through the ISL according to him, with youngsters from Chandigarh relating to his story and striving to chart their own journey on similar lines.

“You need the local heroes. When I was a kid, my local heroes were Bhaichung (Bhutia) sir, (Sunil) Chhetri bhai, Renedy (Singh) bhai, I can say the whole team. Because, I was very involved in football. Many of my friends didn’t know anything about it. But, they know who plays for Manchester United, FC Barcelona, so when you have local heroes, you can connect more with them. For the next kid in Chandigarh who is from the same sector from where I am, they are just like me. So when you connect with local heroes, and realise they are normal human beings, it inspires you and gives you a more realistic idea that you can be there,” Jhingan explained.

Joining FC Goa

Jhingan has gradually evolved to become one of the most recognisable faces of the ISL. He was perhaps the first, biggest product that had emerged out of the ISL ecosystem. For the uninitiated, Jhingan was the first-ever recipient of the ISL Emerging Player of the Year award, back in 2014. He has represented Kerala Blasters FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and Bengaluru FC in the league, before turning a new chapter with his move to the Gaurs, who were seeking a comeback after a few disappointing seasons. From having started off as a breakout 20-year-old star in 2014 to becoming a family man 10 years down the line, Jhingan’s life has come full circle and the ISL has had a major role to play in it. In fact, his move to FC Goa was driven by familial factors more than anything else.

“Manolo was the major influence behind my move to FC Goa. To be honest, it was a lot because of my family, my daughter too. Of course, if I was just with my wife, you would change your decisions. When I was single, I had different viewpoints. When you get married, you have different viewpoints. When you become a father, you become the last person you think of. I just felt like this is a good place for her to grow,” Jhingan said in an interaction with the league, touching upon his desire for her daughter to grow in the quaint and scenic state of Goa.

Looking at lifting the trophy

Over the 10 years, he has seen impeccable success at the international level, winning the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship in 2023, emerging victorious in the Intercontinental Cup twice (2018, 2023), and also the Tri-Nation series on two occasions (2017, 2023). However, the ISL trophy has eluded him still, despite having finished runner-up four times (2014, 2016, 2020-21, 2022-23). However, the ISL trophy has eluded him still, despite having finished runner-up four times (2014, 2016, 2020-21, 2022-23). Asked if he believes he can break that streak with FC Goa this season, he replied, “I never lack confidence.” Needless to say, the team has started off on a bright note on that front.

FC Goa has had a picture perfect start to the 10th season of the Indian Super League (ISL), staying unbeaten as the campaign headed into its halfway break. The appointment of Manolo Marquez and his new acquisitions have turned things around pretty swiftly for the Gaurs, and the role of defender Sandesh Jhingan in the same has been exemplary. The India international has been a stalwart at the back, playing every minute of ISL 2023-24, helping the team keep six clean sheets in 10 games. He has recorded 5.6 clearances per game with a passing accuracy of 79%. Jhingan has scored once, and his defensive partnership with Odei Onaindia has ensured that his team has conceded the least (5) goals in the league so far.

Sabonis’ Triple-Double Leads Kings to Double-Overtime Victory Against Magic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a thrilling double-overtime game, the Sacramento Kings emerged victorious over the Orlando Magic, 138-135, on Wednesday night. Domantas Sabonis notched his seventh triple-double of the season, while Malik Monk delivered a sensational 37-point performance off the bench.

Sabonis finished with 22 points, 23 rebounds, and 12 assists, showcasing his all-around impact on the game. His triple-double was critical in helping Sacramento overcome a strong shooting performance from the Magic, who set a franchise record with 25 3-pointers.

The Magic’s Paolo Banchero had a career-high 43 points but missed a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired. Jalen Suggs contributed 24 points in a valiant effort for Orlando.

De’Aaron Fox played a pivotal role in the second overtime, scoring crucial field goals, including a key jumper to put the Kings ahead 137-135 in the final minute.

The game saw numerous lead changes, especially in the overtime periods. Sabonis’ dunk, off Monk’s assist, gave the Kings a 126-125 lead late in the first overtime. However, Banchero’s layup forced the game into a second overtime.

In the closing moments of regulation, Banchero’s clutch 3-pointer gave Orlando a brief lead, but Monk’s layup tied the game at 118, setting up the overtime drama.

Sabonis, known for his triple-doubles, achieved the feat early in the third quarter, marking his fifth in the last nine games. Keegan Murray also shined for Sacramento with 28 points.

The Kings bounced back from a previous home loss to the Charlotte Hornets, extending their winning streak over the Magic to five games.

Orlando, dealing with multiple injuries, saw Franz Wagner, Gary Harris, and Banchero suffer setbacks during the game, adding to their challenges.

Looking ahead, the Magic continue their West Coast trip against the Denver Nuggets, while the Kings host the Toronto Raptors, both games scheduled for Friday. Sacramento’s resilience in this high-scoring, closely contested match underscores their potential, while Orlando will aim to overcome their injury woes and recent setbacks.
